Tuning the Electronic and Steric Interaction at the Atomic Interface for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

Enriched Oxygen Coverage Localized within Ir Atomic Grids for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Inefficient active site utilization of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts have limited the energy efficiency of proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Here, an atomic grid structure is demonstrated composed of high-density Ir sites (≈10 atoms per nm2) on reactive MnO2-x support which mediates oxygen coverage-enhanced OER process. Experimental characterizations verify the low-valent Mn species with decreased oxygen coordination in MnO2-x exert a pivotal impact in the enriched oxygen coverage on the surface during OER process, and the distributed Ir atomic grids, where highly electrophilic Ir─O(II-δ)- bonds proceed rapidly, render intense nucleophilic attack of oxygen radicals. Thereby, this metal-support cooperation achieves ultra-low overpotentials of 166 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 283 mV at 500 mA cm-2, together with a striking mass activity which is 380 times higher than commercial IrO2 at 1.53 V. Moreover, its high OER performance also markedly surpasses the commercial Ir black catalyst in PEM electrolyzers with long-term stability.

Advances in Noble Metal Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Construction of Under-Coordinated Active Sites

Renewable energy-driven proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) attracts widespread attention as a zero-emission and sustainable technology. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with sluggish OER kinetics and rapid deactivation are major obstacles to the widespread commercialization of PEMWE. To date, although various advanced electrocatalysts have been reported to enhance acidic OER performance, Ru/Ir-based nanomaterials remain the most promising catalysts for PEMWE applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, and cost-effective Ru/Ir catalysts. Since the structure-performance relationship is one of the most important tools for studying the reaction mechanism and constructing the optimal catalytic system. In this review, the recent research progress from the construction of unsaturated sites to gain a deeper understanding of the reaction and deactivation mechanism of catalysts is summarized. First, a general understanding of OER reaction mechanism, catalyst dissolution mechanism, and active site structure is provided. Then, advances in the design and synthesis of advanced acidic OER catalysts are reviewed in terms of the classification of unsaturated active site design, i.e., alloy, core-shell, single-atom, and framework structures. Finally, challenges and perspectives are presented for the future development of OER catalysts and renewable energy technologies for hydrogen production.

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such NiFe LDH with EA effect results in only 262 mV overpotential to reach 50 mA cm-2, which is 51 mV-lower compared with pristine NiFe LDH (313 mV), and reduced Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 than NiFe LDH (107.5 mV dec-1). Spectroscopy characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the EA near concomitant Vo can induce a narrower energy gap and lower thermodynamic barrier to enhance OER performance. This study clarifies the mechanism of the EA effect on OER activity, providing a direct electronic structure modulation guideline for effective electrocatalyst design.

Transfer learning guided discovery of efficient perovskite oxide for alkaline water oxidation

Perovskite oxides show promise for the oxygen evolution reaction. However, numerical chemical compositions remain unexplored due to inefficient trial-and-error methods for material discovery. Here, we develop a transfer learning paradigm incorporating a pre-trained model, ensemble learning, and active learning, enabling the prediction of undiscovered perovskite oxides with enhanced generalizability for this reaction. Screening 16,050 compositions leads to the identification and synthesis of 36 new perovskite oxides, including 13 pure perovskite structures. Pr0.1Sr0.9Co0.5Fe0.5O3 and Pr0.1Sr0.9Co0.5Fe0.3Mn0.2O3 exhibit low overpotentials of 327 mV and 315 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Electrochemical measurements reveal coexistence of absorbate evolution and lattice oxygen mechanisms for O-O coupling in both materials. Pr0.1Sr0.9Co0.5Fe0.3Mn0.2O3 demonstrates enhanced OH- affinity compared to Pr0.1Sr0.9Co0.5Fe0.5O3, with the emergence of oxo-bridged Mn-Co conjugate facilitating charge redistribution and dynamic reversibility of Olattice/VO, thereby slowing down Co dissolution. This work paves the way for accelerated discovery and development of high-performance perovskite oxide electrocatalysts for this reaction.

Lattice-Confined Single-Atom Catalyst: Preparation, Application and Electron Regulation Mechanism

Lattice-confined single-atom catalyst (LC SAC), featuring exceptional activity, intriguing stability and prominent selectivity, has attracted extensive attention in the fields of various reactions (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), etc.). To design a "smart" LC SAC for catalytic applications, one must systematically comprehend updated advances in the preparation, the application, and especially the peculiar electron regulation mechanism of LC SAC. In this review, the specific preparation methods of LC SAC based on general coordination strategy are updated, and its applications in HER, OER, ORR, N2 reduction reaction (NRR), advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and so forth are summarized to display outstanding activity, stability and selectivity. Uniquely, the electron regulation mechanisms are first and deeply discussed and can be primarily categorized as electron transfer bridge with monometallic active sites, novel catalytic centers with polymetallic active sites, and positive influence by surrounding environments. In the end, the existing issues and future development directions are put forward with a view to further optimize the performance of LC SAC. This review is expected to contribute to the in-depth understanding and practical application of highly efficient LC SAC.

Interfacial Electronic Interactions Between Ultrathin NiFe-MOF Nanosheets and Ir Nanoparticles Heterojunctions Leading to Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Creating specific noble metal/metal-organic framework (MOF) heterojunction nanostructures represents an effective strategy to promote water electrolysis but remains rather challenging. Herein, a heterojunction electrocatalyst is developed by growing Ir nanoparticles on ultrathin NiFe-MOF nanosheets supported by nickel foam (NF) via a readily accessible solvothermal approach and subsequent redox strategy. Because of the electronic interactions between Ir nanoparticles and NiFe-MOF nanosheets, the optimized Ir@NiFe-MOF/NF catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (η10 = 15 mV, η denotes the overpotential) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (η10 = 213 mV) in 1.0 m KOH solution, superior to commercial and recently reported electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations are used to further investigate the electronic interactions between Ir nanoparticles and NiFe-MOF nanosheets, shedding light on the mechanisms behind the enhanced HER and OER performance. This work details a promising approach for the design and development of efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Reversing the Interfacial Electric Field in Metal Phosphide Heterojunction by Fe-Doping for Large-Current Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Developing non-precious-metal electrocatalysts that can operate with a low overpotential at a high current density for industrial application is challenging. Heterogeneous bimetallic phosphides have attracted much interest. Despite high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, the ordinary oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance hinders their practical use. Herein, it is shown that Fe-doping reverses and enlarges the interfacial electrical field at the heterojunction, turning the H intermediate favorable binding sites for HER into O intermediate favorable sites for OER. Specifically, the self-supported heterojunction catalysts on nickel foam (CoP@Ni2P/NF and Fe-CoP@Fe-Ni2P/NF) are readily synthesized. They only require the overpotentials of 266 and 274 mV to drive a large current density of 1000 mA cm-2 (j1000) for HER and OER, respectively. Furthermore, a water splitting cell equipped with these electrodes only requires a voltage of 1.724 V to drive j1000 with excellent durability, demonstrating the potential of industrial application. This work offers new insights on interfacial engineering for heterojunction catalysts.

Spontaneous Formation of Ultrasmall Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Cobalt-Based Layered Double Hydroxide for Electrochemical and Environmental Catalysis

Supported noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are appealing for energy and environment catalysis. To facilitate the loading of NMNPs, in situ reduction of Mn+ on the support with extra reductants/surfactants is adopted, but typically results in aggregated NMNPs with uneven size distributions or blocked active sites of the NMNPs. Herein, the use of cobalt layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is proposed as both support and reductant for the preparation of supported NMNPs with ultrasmall sizes and even distributions. The resultant Co-LDH-supported NMNPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance and stability. For example, Ir/Co-LDH displays a low overpotential of 188 mV (10 mA cm-2) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction and a long-term stability over 100 h (100 mA cm-2) in overall water splitting. Ru/Co-LDH can achieve a 4-nitrophenol reduction with high rate of 0.36 min-1 and S2- detection with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 µm. Overall, this work provides a green and effective strategy to fabricate supported NMNPs with greatly improved catalytic performances.

Controllable Electronic Transfer Tailoring d-band Center via Cobalt-Oxygen-Bridged Ru/Fe Dual-sites for Boosted Oxygen Evolution

Rational tailoring of the electronic structure at the defined active center of reconstructed metal (oxy)hydroxides (MOOH) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge. With the guidance of density functional theory (DFT), herein a dual-site regulatory strategy is reported to tailor the d-band center of the Co site in CoOOH via the controlled electronic transfer at the Ru─O─Co─O─Fe bonding structure. Through the bridged O2- site, electrons are vastly flowed from the t2g-orbital of the Ru site to the low-spin orbital of the Co site in the Ru-O-Co coordination and further transfer from the strong electron-electron repulsion of the Co site to the Fe site by the Co-O-Fe coordination, which balancing the electronic configuration of Co sites to weaken the over-strong adsorption energy barrier of OH* and O*, respectively. Benefiting from the highly active of the Co site, the constructed (Ru2Fe2Co6)OOH provide an extremely low overpotential of 248 mV and a Tafel slope of 32.5 mV dec-1 at 10 mA cm-2 accompanied by long durability in alkaline OER, far superior over the pristine and Co-O-Fe bridged CoOOH catalysts. This work provides guidance for the rational design and in-depth analysis of the optimized role of metal dual-sites.

Stabilizing Lattice Oxygen through Mn Doping in NiCo2O4-δ Spinel Electrocatalysts for Efficient and Durable Acid Oxygen Evolution

Design the electrocatalysts without noble metal is still a challenge for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid media. Herein, we reported the manganese (Mn) doping method to decrease the concentration of oxygen vacancy (VO) and form the Mn-O structure adjacent octahedral sites in spinel NiCo2O4-δ (NiMn1.5Co3O4-δ), which highly enhanced the activity and stability of spinel NiCo2O4-δ with a low overpotential (η) of 280 mV at j=10 mA cm-2 and long-term stability of 80 h in acid media. The isotopic labelling experiment based on differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) clearly demonstrated the lattice oxygen in NiMn1.5Co3O4-δ is more stable due to strong Mn-O bond and shows synergetic adsorbate evolution mechanism (SAEM) for acid OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal highly increased oxygen vacancy formation energy (EVO) of NiCo2O4-δ after Mn doping. More importantly, the highly hydrogen bonding between Mn-O and *OOH adsorbed on adjacent Co octahedral sites promote the formation of *OO from *OOH due to the greatly enhanced charge density of O in Mn substituted sites.

Anion Structure Regulation of Cobalt Silicate Hydroxide Endowing Boosted Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal silicates (TMSs) are attempted for the electrocatalyst of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their special layered structure in recent years. However, defects such as low theoretical activity and conductivity limit their application. Researchers always prefer to composite TMSs with other functional materials to make up for their deficiency, but rarely focus on the effect of intrinsic structure adjustment on their catalytic activity, especially anion structure regulation. Herein, applying the method of interference hydrolysis and vacancy reserve, new silicate vacancies (anionic regulation) are introduced in cobalt silicate hydroxide (CoSi), named SV-CoSi, to enlarge the number and enhance the activity of catalytic sites. The overpotential of SV-CoSi declines to 301 mV at 10 mA cm-2 compared to 438 mV of CoSi. Source of such improvement is verified to be not only the increase of active sites, but also the positive effect on the intrinsic activity due to the enhancement of cobalt-oxygen covalence with the variation of anion structure by density functional theory (DFT) method. This work demonstrates that the feasible intrinsic anion structure regulation can improve OER performance of TMSs and provides an effective idea for the development of non-noble metal catalyst for OER.

In Situ Electrochemical Restructuring B-Doped Metal-Organic Frameworks as Efficient OER Electrocatalysts for Stable Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising as effective electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the origin of OER activity for MOF-based electrocatalysts is still unclear because of their structure reconstruction during electrocatalysis process. Here, a novel MOF (B-MOF-Zn-Co) with spherical superstructure is developed by hydrothermal treatment of zeolitic imidazolate framework-Zn, Co (ZIF-Zn-Co) using boric acid. The resultant B-MOF-Zn-Co shows high OER activity with a low overpotential of 362 mV at 100 mA cm-2. Remarkably, B-MOF-Zn-Co displays excellent stability with only 3.6% voltage delay over 300 h at 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. Surprisingly, B-MOF-Zn-Co thoroughly transforms into B-doped CoOOH (B-CoOOH) during electrolysis process, which is served as actual active material for high OER electrocatalytic performance. The newly-formed B-CoOOH possesses lower energy barrier of potential-determining step (PDS) for OOH* formation compared with CoOOH, benefiting for high OER activity. More importantly, B-MOF-Zn-Co based anion exchange membrane water electrolytic cell (AEMWE) demonstrates continuously durable operation with stable current density of 200 mA cm-2 over 300 h, illustrating its potential application in practice water electrolysis. This work offers an in situ electrochemical reconstruction strategy for the development of stable and effective OER electrocatalysts toward practice AEMWE.

Highly Reversible Zn-Air Batteries Enabled by Tuned Valence Electron and Steric Hindrance on Atomic Fe-N4-C Sites

The bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst is the Achilles' heel of achieving robust reversible Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis in alkaline media is realized on atomic Fe-N4-C sites reinforced by NixCo3-xO4 (NixCo3-xO4@Fe1/NC). Compared with that of pristine Fe1/NC, the stability of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is increased 10 times and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance is also improved. The steric hindrance alters the valence electron at the Fe-N4-C sites, resulting in a shorter Fe-N bond and enhanced stability of the Fe-N4-C sites. The corresponding solid-state ZABs exhibit an ultralong lifespan (>460 h at 5 mA cm-2) and high rate performance (from 2 to 50 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the structural evolution of NixCo3-xO4@Fe1/NC before and after the OER and ORR as well as charge-discharge cycling is explored. This work develops an efficient strategy for improving bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis and possibly other processes.

Superior Electrochemical Water Splitting and Energy-Storage Performances of In Situ Fabricated Charge-Separated Metal Organophosphonate Single Crystals

The design and exploration of advanced materials as a durable multifunctional electrocatalyst toward sustainable energy generation and storage development is the most perdurable challenge in the domain of renewable energy research. Herein, a facile in situ solvothermal approach has been adopted to prepare a methylviologen-regulated crystalline metal phosphonate compound, [C12H14N2][Ni(C11H11N2)(H2hedp)2]2•6H2O (NIT1), (H4hedp = 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid) and well characterized by several techniques. The as-prepared NIT1 displays excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity with dynamic stability toward oxygen evolution reaction (η10 = 288 mV) and hydrogen evolution reaction (η10 = 228 mV) in alkaline (1.0 M KOH) and acidic mediums (0.5 M H2SO4), respectively. Such a low overpotential and Tafel slope (68 mV/dec for OER; 56 mV/dec for HER) along with long-term durability up to 20 h of NIT1 make it superior to benchmark the electrocatalyst and various nonprecious metal-based catalysts under similar experimental condition. Further, the electrochemical supercapacitor measurements (in three-electrode system) reveal that the NIT1 electrode possesses much higher specific capacity of 187.6 C g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1 (272 C g-1 at 5 mV s-1) with capacitance retention of 75.2% over 10,000 cycles at 14 A g-1 (Coulombic efficiency > 99%) in 6 M KOH electrolyte medium. Finally for a practical application, an asymmetric supercapacitor device (coin cell) is assembled by NIT1 material. The as-fabricated device delivers the maximum energy density of 39.4 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 450 W kg-1 and achieves a wide voltage window of 1.80 V. Notably, the device endures a remarkable cycle performance with cyclic retention of 92% (Coulombic efficiency > 99%) even after 14,000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g-1. Nevertheless, the extraordinary electrochemical activities toward OER and HER as well as the high-performance device fabrication for LED illumination of such a noble metal-free lower-dimensional charge-transfer compound are truly path breaking and would be promising for the development of advanced multifunctional materials.

Spatially and Temporally Resolved Dynamic Response of Co-Based Composite Interface during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Interfacial interaction dictates the overall catalytic performance and catalytic behavior rules of the composite catalyst. However, understanding of interfacial active sites at the microscopic scale is still limited. Importantly, identifying the dynamic action mechanism of the "real" active site at the interface necessitates nanoscale, high spatial-time-resolved complementary-operando techniques. In this work, a Co3O4 homojunction with a well-defined interface effect is developed as a model system to explore the spatial-correlation dynamic response of the interface toward oxygen evolution reaction. Quasi in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy-loss spectroscopy with high spatial resolution visually confirms the size characteristics of the interface effect in the spatial dimension, showing that the activation of active sites originates from strong interfacial electron interactions at a scale of 3 nm. Multiple time-resolved operando spectroscopy techniques explicitly capture dynamic changes in the adsorption behavior for key reaction intermediates. Combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the dynamic adjustment of multiple adsorption configurations of intermediates by highly activated active sites at the interface facilitates the O-O coupling and *OOH deprotonation processes. The dual dynamic regulation mechanism accelerates the kinetics of oxygen evolution and serves as a pivotal factor in promoting the oxygen evolution activity of the composite structure. The resulting composite catalyst (Co-B@Co3O4/Co3O4 NSs) exhibits an approximately 70-fold turnover frequency and 20-fold mass activity than the monomer structure (Co3O4 NSs) and leads to significant activity (η10 ∼257 mV). The visual complementary analysis of multimodal operando/in situ techniques provides us with a powerful platform to advance our fundamental understanding of interfacial structure-activity relationships in composite structured catalysts.

Distance effect of single atoms on stability of cobalt oxide catalysts for acidic oxygen evolution

Developing efficient and economical electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). Cobalt oxides are considered promising non-precious OER catalysts due to their high activities. However, the severe dissolution of Co atoms in acid media leads to the collapse of crystal structure, which impedes their application in PEMWE. Here, we report that introducing acid-resistant Ir single atoms into the lattice of spinel cobalt oxides can significantly suppress the Co dissolution and keep them highly stable during the acidic OER process. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, we reveal that the stabilizing effect induced by Ir heteroatoms exhibits a strong dependence on the distance of adjacent Ir single atoms, where the OER stability of cobalt oxides continuously improves with decreasing the distance. When the distance reduces to about 0.6 nm, the spinel cobalt oxides present no obvious degradation over a 60-h stability test for acidic OER, suggesting potential for practical applications.

Regulating the Electronic Structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks by Introducing Mn for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Activity

The construction of low-cost and highly efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is paramount for clean and sustainable hydrogen energy. In recent years, metal-organic framework (MOF) OER electrocatalysts have attracted tremendous research attention. Herein, we report a simple and facile strategy to construct bimetallic MOFs (named CoMn0.01) for enhancing OER catalytic performance. Significantly, CoMn0.01 exhibited remarkable OER activity (255 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a low Tafel slope of 66 mV dec-1, superior to those of commercial benchmark electrocatalysts (RuO2, 352 mV, 178 mV dec-1). Besides, the catalyst demonstrated outstanding longevity for 144 h at a current density of 100 mA cm -2. Mn doping can regulate the electronic structure of Co MOFs, which optimizes charge transfer capability and improves conductivity.

Spatial configuration of Fe-Co dual-sites boosting catalytic intermediates coupling toward oxygen evolution reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the pivotal obstacle of water splitting for hydrogen production. Dual-sites catalysts (DSCs) are considered exceeding single-site catalysts due to the preternatural synergetic effects of two metals in OER. However, appointing the specific spatial configuration of dual-sites toward more efficient catalysis still remains a challenge. Herein, we constructed two configurations of Fe-Co dual-sites: stereo Fe-Co sites (stereo-Fe-Co DSC) and planar Fe-Co sites (planar-Fe-Co DSC). Remarkably, the planar-Fe-Co DSC has excellent OER performance superior to stereo-Fe-Co DSC. DFT calculations and experiments including isotope differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and in situ Raman reveal the *O intermediates can be directly coupled to form *O-O* rather than *OOH by both the DSCs, which could overcome the limitation of four electron transfer steps in OER. Especially, the proper Fe-Co distance and steric direction of the planar-Fe-Co benefit the cooperation of dual sites to dehydrogenate intermediates into *O-O* than stereo-Fe-Co in the rate-determining step. This work provides valuable insights and support for further research and development of OER dual-site catalysts.

Bridging Together Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives in Single-Atom Alloys for Electrochemical Ammonia Production

Ammonia is an essential commodity in the food and chemical industry. Despite the energy-intensive nature, the Haber-Bosch process is the only player in ammonia production at large scales. Developing other strategies is highly desirable, as sustainable and decentralized ammonia production is crucial. Electrochemical ammonia production by directly reducing nitrogen and nitrogen-based moieties powered by renewable energy sources holds great potential. However, low ammonia production and selectivity rates hamper its utilization as a large-scale ammonia production process. Creating effective and selective catalysts for the electrochemical generation of ammonia is critical for long-term nitrogen fixation. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) have become a new class of materials with distinctive features that may be able to solve some of the problems with conventional heterogeneous catalysts. The design and optimization of SAAs for electrochemical ammonia generation have recently been significantly advanced. This comprehensive review discusses these advancements from theoretical and experimental research perspectives, offering a fundamental understanding of the development of SAAs for ammonia production.

Distortion-Induced Interfacial Charge Transfer at Single Cobalt Atom Secured on Ordered Intermetallic Surface Enhances Pure Oxygen Production

In this work, atomic cobalt (Co) incorporation into the Pd2Ge intermetallic lattice facilitates operando generation of a thin layer of CoO over Co-substituted Pd2Ge, with Co in the CoO surface layer functioning as single metal sites. Hence the catalyst has been titled Co1-CoO-Pd2Ge. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the existence of CoO, with some of the Co bonded to Ge by substitution of Pd sites in the Pd2Ge lattice. The role of the CoO layer in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been verified by its selective removal using argon sputtering and conducting the OER on the etched catalyst. In situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrate that CoO gets transformed to CoOOH (Co3+) in operando condition with faster charge transfer through Pd atoms in the core Pd2Ge lattice. In situ Raman spectroscopy depicts the emergence of a CoOOH phase on applying potential and shows that the phase is stable with increasing potential and time without getting converted to CoO2. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pd2Ge lattice induces distortion in the CoO phase and generates unpaired spins in a nonmagnetic CoOOH system resulting in an increase in the OER activity and durability. The existence of spin density even after electrocatalysis is verified from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. We have thus successfully synthesized intermetallic supported CoO during synthesis and rigorously verified the role played by an intermetallic Pd2Ge core in enhancing charge transfer, generating spin density, improving electrochemical durability, and imparting mechanical stability to a thin CoOOH overlayer. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry has been explored to visualize the instantaneous generation of oxygen gas during the onset of the reaction.

Photo-Activating Biomimetic Polyoxomolybdate for Boosting Oxygen Evolution in Neutral Electrolytes

Inspired by the metal-oxo cluster structural feature and charge separation behaviour of the oxygen evolving center (OEC) in photosystem II (PS-II) under photoirradiation, a new crystalline photochromic polyoxomolybdate, MV2 [β-Mo8 O26 ] (1, MV=methyl viologen cation), is designed as a biomimetic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst in neutral electrolytes. After photoinduced electron transfer (PIET) with colour change from colourless to grey, it remains in an ultra-stable charge-separated state over a year under ambient conditions. The observed overpotential at 10 mA ⋅ cm-2 and Tafel slope decrease by 49 mV and 62.8 mV ⋅ dec-1 after coloration, respectively. The outstanding OER performance of the coloured state in neutral electrolytes even outperforms the commercial RuO2 benchmark. Experimental and theoretical studies show that oxygen holes within polyanions after irradiation serve as sites for enhancing direct O-O coupling, thus effectively promoting OER. This is the first successful application of electron-transfer photochromism to realize OER activity gain.

Pd Loaded NiCo Hydroxides for Biomass Electrooxidation: Understanding the Synergistic Effect of Proton Deintercalation and Adsorption Kinetics

The key issue in the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) is to understand the synergistic mechanism involving the protons deintercalation of catalyst and the adsorption of the substrate. In this study, a Pd/NiCo catalyst was fabricated by modifying Pd clusters onto a Co-doped Ni(OH)2 support, in which the introduction of Co induced lattice distortion and optimized the energy band structure of Ni sites, while the Pd clusters with an average size of 1.96 nm exhibited electronic interactions with NiCo support, resulting in electron transfer from Pd to Ni sites. The resulting Pd/NiCo exhibited low onset potential of 1.32 V and achieved a current density of 50 mA/cm2 at only 1.38 V. Compared to unmodified Ni(OH)2 , the Pd/NiCo achieved an 8.3-fold increase in peak current density. DFT calculations and in situ XAFS revealed that the Co sites affected the conformation and band structure of neighboring Ni sites through CoO6 octahedral distortion, reducing the proton deintercalation potential of Pd/NiCo and promoting the production of Ni3+ -O active species accordingly. The involvement of Pd decreased the electronic transfer impedance, and thereby accelerated Ni3+ -O formation. Moreover, the Pd clusters enhanced the adsorption of HMF through orbital hybridization, kinetically promoting the contact and reaction of HMF with Ni3+ -O.

Boosting the Electrochemical 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation by Balancing the Competitive Adsorption of Organic and OH- over Controllable Reconstructed Ni3 S2 /NiOx

The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising method for the efficient production of biomass-derived high-value-added chemicals. However, its practical application is limited by: 1) the low activity and selectivity caused by the competitive adsorption of HMF and OH- and 2) the low operational stability caused by the uncontrollable reconstruction of the catalyst. To overcome these limitations, a series of Ni3 S2 /NiOx -n catalysts with controllable compositions and well-defined structures are synthesized using a novel in situ controlled surface reconstruction strategy. The adsorption behavior of HMF and OH- can be continuously adjusted by varying the ratio of NiOx to Ni3 S2 on the catalysts surface, as indicated by in situ characterizations, contact angle analysis, and theoretical simulations. Owing to the balanced competitive adsorption of HMF and OH- , the optimized Ni3 S2 /NiOx -15 catalyst exhibited remarkable HMF electrocatalytic oxidation performance, with the current density reaching 366 mA cm-2 at 1.5 VRHE and the Faradaic efficiency of the product, 2,5-furanedicarboxylic acid, reaching 98%. Moreover, Ni3 S2 /NiOx -15 exhibits excellent durability, with its activity and structure remaining stable for over 100 h of operation. This study provides a new route for the design and construction of catalysts for value-added biomass conversion and offers new insights into enhancing catalytic performance by balancing competitive adsorption.

Switching the Oxygen Evolution Mechanism on Atomically Dispersed Ru for Enhanced Acidic Reaction Kinetics

Designing stable single-atom electrocatalysts with lower energy barriers is urgent for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction. In particular, the atomic catalysts are highly dependent on the kinetically sluggish acid-base mechanism, limiting the reaction paths of intermediates. Herein, we successfully manipulate the steric localization of Ru single atoms at the Co3O4 surface to improve acidic oxygen evolution by precise control of the anchor sites. The delicate structure design can switch the reaction mechanism from the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) to the optimized adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). In particular, Ru atoms embedded into cation vacancies reveal an optimized mechanism that activates the proton donor-acceptor function (PDAM), demonstrating a new single-atom catalytic pathway to circumvent the classic scaling relationship. Steric interactions with intermediates at the anchored Ru-O-Co interface played a primary role in optimizing the intermediates' conformation and reducing the energy barrier. As a comparison, Ru atoms confined to the surface sites exhibit a lattice oxygen mechanism for the oxygen evolution process. As a result, the delicate atom control of the spatial position presents a 100-fold increase in mass activity from 36.96 A gRu(ads)-1 to 4012.11 A gRu(anc)-1 at 1.50 V. These findings offer new insights into the precise control of single-atom catalytic behavior.

Improved Electrocatalytic Activity and Stability by Single Iridium Atoms on Iron-based Layered Double Hydroxides for Oxygen Evolution

Full understanding to the origin of the catalytic performance of a supported nanocatalyst from the points of view of both the active component and support is significant for the achievement of high performance. Herein, based on a model electrocatalyst of single-iridium-atom-doped iron (Fe)-based layered double hydroxides (LDH) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), we reveal the first completed origin of the catalytic performance of such supported nanocatalysts. Specially, besides the activity enhancement of Ir sites by LDH support, the stability of surface Fe sites is enhanced by doped Ir sites: DFT calculation shows that the Ir sites can reduce the activity and enhance the stability of the nearby Fe sites; while further finite element simulations indicate, the stability enhancement of distant Fe sites could be attributed to the much low concentration of OER reactant (hydroxyl ions, OH- ) around them induced by the much fast consumption of OH- on highly active Ir sites. These new findings about the interaction between the main active components and supports are applicable in principle to other heterogeneous nanocatalysts and provide a completed understanding to the catalytic performance of heterogeneous nanocatalysts.

Reversely Trapping Isolated Atoms in High Oxidation State for Accelerating the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount to the energy conversion and storage devices. However, the structural complexity of heterogeneous electrocatalysts makes it a great challenge to elucidate the dynamic structural evolution and OER mechanisms. Here, we develop a controllable atom-trapping strategy to extract isolated Mo atom from the amorphous MoOx -decorated CoSe2 (a-MoOx @CoSe2 ) pre-catalyst into Co-based oxyhydroxide (Mo-CoOOH) through an ultra-fast self-reconstruction process during the OER process. This conceptual advance has been validated by operando characterizations, which reveals that the initially rapid Mo leaching can expedite the dynamic reconstruction of pre-catalyst, and simultaneously trap Mo species in high oxidation state into the lattice of in situ generated CoOOH support. Impressively, the OER kinetics of CoOOH has been greatly accelerated after the reverse decoration of Mo species, in which the Mo-CoOOH affords a markedly decreased overpotential of 297 mV at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the Co species have been greatly activated via the effective electron coupling with Mo species in high oxidation state. These findings open new avenues toward directly synthesizing atomically dispersed electrocatalysts for high-efficiency water splitting.

Universal Sub-Nanoreactor Strategy for Synthesis of Yolk-Shell MoS2 Supported Single Atom Electrocatalysts toward Robust Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The coordination structure determines the electrocatalytic performances of single atom catalysts (SACs), while it remains a challenge to precisely regulate their spatial location and coordination environment. Herein, we report a universal sub-nanoreactor strategy for synthesis of yolk-shell MoS2 supported single atom electrocatalysts with dual-anchored microenvironment of vacancy-enriched MoS2 and intercalation carbon toward robust hydrogen-evolution reaction. Theoretical calculations reveal that the "E-Lock" and "E-Channel" are conducive to stabilize and activate metal single atoms. A group of SACs is subsequently produced with the assistance of sulfur vacancy and intercalation carbon in the yolk-shell sub-nanoreactor. The optimized C-Co-MoS2 yields the lowest overpotential (η10 =17 mV) compared with previously reported MoS2 -based electrocatalysts to date, and also affords a 5-9 fold improvement in activity even comparing with those as-prepared single-anchored analogues. Theoretical results and in situ characterizations unveil its active center and durability. This work provides a universal pathway to design efficient catalysts for electro-refinery.

Dynamically Stabilized Electronic Regulation and Electrochemical Reconstruction in Co and S Atomic Pair Doped Fe3 O4 for Water Oxidation

The electronic regulation and surface reconstruction of earth-abundant electrocatalysts are essential to efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an inverse-spinel Co,S atomic pair codoped Fe3 O4 grown on iron foam (Co,S-Fe3 O4 /IF) is fabricated as a cost-effective electrocatalyst for OER. This strategy of Co and S atomic pair directional codoping features accelerates surface reconstruction and dynamically stabilizes electronic regulation. CoS atomic pairs doped in the Fe3 O4 crystal favor controllable surface reconstruction via sulfur leaching, forming oxygen vacancies and Co doping on the surface of reconstructed FeOOH (Co-FeOOH-Ov /IF). Before and after surface reconstruction via in situ electrochemical process, the Fe sites with octahedral field dynamically maintains an appropriate electronic structure for OER intermediates, thus exhibiting consistently excellent OER performance. The electrochemically tuned Fe-based electrodes exhibit a low overpotential of 349 mV at a current density of 1000 mA cm-2 , a slight Tafel slope of 43.3 mV dec-1 , and exceptional long-term electrolysis stability of 200 h in an alkaline medium. Density functional theory calculations illustrate the electronic regulation of Fe sites, changes in Gibbs free energies, and the breaking of the restrictive scaling relation between OER intermediates. This work provides a promising directional codoping strategy for developing precatalysts for large-scale water-splitting systems.

Performance Regulation of Single-Atom Catalyst by Modulating the Microenvironment of Metal Sites

Metal-based catalysts, encompassing both homogeneous and heterogeneous types, play a vital role in the modern chemical industry. Heterogeneous metal-based catalysts usually possess more varied catalytically active centers than homogeneous catalysts, making it challenging to regulate their catalytic performance. In contrast, homogeneous catalysts have defined active-site structures, and their performance can be easily adjusted by modifying the ligand. These characteristics lead to remarkable conceptual and technical differences between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. As a recently emerging class of catalytic material, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have become one of the most active new frontiers in the catalysis field and show great potential to bridge homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes. This review documents a brief introduction to SACs and their role in a range of reactions involving single-atom catalysis. To fully understand process-structure-property relationships of single-atom catalysis in chemical reactions, active sites or coordination structure and performance regulation strategies (e.g., tuning chemical and physical environment of single atoms) of SACs are comprehensively summarized. Furthermore, we discuss the application limitations, development trends and future challenges of single-atom catalysis and present a perspective on further constructing a highly efficient (e.g., activity, selectivity and stability), single-atom catalytic system for a broader scope of reactions.

Regulating the Coordination Geometry and Oxidation State of Single-Atom Fe Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

FeNC catalysts demonstrate remarkable activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and Zn-air batteries (ZABs). The local coordination of Fe single atoms in FeNC catalysts strongly impacts ORR activity. Herein, FeNC catalysts containing Fe single atoms sites with FeN₃ , FeN₄ , and FeN₅ coordinations are synthesized by carbonization of Fe-rich polypyrrole precursors. The FeN₅ sites possess a higher Fe oxidation state (+2.62) than the FeN₃ (+2.23) and FeN₄ (+2.47) sites, and higher ORR activity. Density functional theory calculations verify that the FeN₅ coordination optimizes the adsorption and desorption of ORR intermediates, dramatically lowering the energy barrier for OH^- desorption in the rate-limiting ORR step. A primary ZAB constructed using the FeNC catalyst with FeN₅ sites demonstrates state-of-the-art performance (an open circuit potential of 1.629 V, power density of 159 mW cm^-2 ). Results confirm an intimate structure-activity relationship between Fe coordination, Fe oxidation state, and ORR activity in FeNC catalysts.

Oxidation State Engineering in Octahedral Ni by Anchored Sulfate to Boost Intrinsic Oxygen Evolution Activity

Promoting the electron occupancy of active sites to unity is an effective method to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of spinel oxides, but it remains a great challenge. Here, an in situ approach is developed to modify the valence state of octahedral Ni cations in NiFe₂O₄ inverse spinel via surface sulfates (SO₄^2-). Different from previous studies, SO₄^2- is directly anchored on the spinel surface instead of forming from uncontrolled conversion or surface reconstruction. Experiment and theoretical calculations reveal the precise adsorption sites and spatial arrangement for SO₄^2- species. As a main promoting factor, surface SO₄^2- effectively converts the crystal field stable Ni state (t_2g⁶e_g²) to the near-unity e_g electron state (t_2g⁶e_g¹). Moreover, the inevitable oxygen vacancies (V_o) further optimize the energy barrier of the potential-determining step (from OH* to O*). This co-modification strategy enhances turnover frequency-based electrocatalytic activity about two orders higher than the control sample without surface sulfates. This work may provide insight into the OER activity enhancement mechanism by the oxyanion groups.

Spinel-Derived Formation and Amorphization of Bimetallic Oxyhydroxides for Efficient Electrocatalytic Biomass Oxidation

Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with water-assisted oxidation of organic molecules represents a promising approach for achieving sustainable electrochemical biomass utilization. Among numerous OER catalysts, spinels have received substantial attention due to their manifold compositions and valence states, yet their application in biomass conversions remains rare. Herein, a series of spinels were investigated for the selective electrooxidation of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, two model substrates for versatile value-added chemical products. Spinel sulfides universally exhibit superior catalytic performance compared to that of spinel oxides, and further investigations show that the replacement of oxygen with sulfur led to the complete phase transition of spinel sulfides into amorphous bimetallic oxyhydroxides during electrochemical activation, serving as the active species. Excellent values of conversion rate (100%), selectivity (100%), faradaic efficiency (>95%), and stability were achieved via sulfide-derived amorphous CuCo-oxyhydroxide. Furthermore, a volcano-like correlation was established between their BEOR and OER activities based on an OER-assisted organic oxidation mechanism.

Ir Nanoparticles Anchored on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Overall Water Splitting under pH-Universal Conditions

The construction of high-activity and low-cost electrocatalysts is critical for efficient hydrogen production by water electrolysis. Herein, we developed an advanced electrocatalyst by anchoring well-dispersed Ir nanoparticles on nickel metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni-NDC (NDC: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic) nanosheets. Benefiting from the strong synergy between Ir and MOF through interfacial Ni-O-Ir bonds, the synthesized Ir@Ni-NDC showed exceptional electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in a wide pH range, superior to commercial benchmarks and most reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the charge redistribution of Ni-O-Ir bridge induced the optimization of H₂ O, OH* and H* adsorption, thus leading to the accelerated electrochemical kinetics for HER and OER. This work provides a new clue to exploit bifunctional electrocatalysts for pH-universal overall water splitting.

Metal-Free Carbon Nitride Nanosheet Supported the Pentacoordinated Silicon Intermediates for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a promising approach to overcome the environmental and energy crisis. However, developing effective photocatalysts with well activity, light absorption, and photogenerated carrier lifetime is still a challenge. Herein, combining extensive first-principles and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics calculations, we find that microporous carbon-nitride nanosheets with a pyridinic nitrogen, such as C₂N and C₆N₆, possess the pentacoordinated silicon intermediates' bonding environment. The pentacoordinated silicon as intermediates exhibits good photocatalytic performance for the difficult four-electronic oxygen evolution reaction. The overpotential is only 0.55 V for C₂N, which is significantly lower than that of the tetracoordinated silicon intermediates (2.00 V). Simultaneously, the decoration of the silicon group not only widens the absorption range of visible light but also maintains the lifetime of photogenerated carriers on the nanosecond scale, which enhances the application efficiency of solar energy. Our work paves a new route for advancing photocatalytic overall water splitting.

Molecule-Enhanced Electrocatalysis of Sustainable Oxygen Evolution Using Organoselenium Functionalized Metal-Organic Nanosheets

Remolding the reactivity of metal active sites is critical to facilitate renewable electricity-powered water electrolysis. Doping heteroatoms, such as Se, into a metal crystal lattice has been considered an effective approach, yet usually suffers from loss of functional heteroatoms during harsh electrocatalytic conditions, thus leading to the gradual inactivation of the catalysts. Here, we report a new heteroatom-containing molecule-enhanced strategy toward sustainable oxygen evolution improvement. An organoselenium ligand, bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)selenide containing robust C-Se-C covalent bonds equipped in the precatalyst of ultrathin metal-organic nanosheets Co-SeMON, is revealed to significantly enhance the catalytic mass activity of the cobalt site by 25 times, as well as extend the catalyst operation time in alkaline conditions by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude compared with these reported metal selenides. A combination of various in situ/ex situ spectroscopic techniques, ab initio molecular dynamics, and density functional theory calculations unveiled the organoselenium intensified mechanism, in which the nonclassical bonding of Se to O-containing intermediates endows adsorption-energy regulation beyond the conventional scaling relationship. Our results showcase the great potential of molecule-enhanced catalysts for highly efficient and economical water oxidation.

Modulation of IrO6 Chemical Environment for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution in Acid

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits the commercialization of oxygen electrochemistry, which plays a key role in renewable energy technologies such as fuel cells and electrolyzers. Herein, a facile and practical strategy is developed to successfully incorporate Ir single atoms into the lattice of transition metal oxides (TMOs). The chemical environment of Ir and its neighboring lattice oxygen is modulated, and the lattice oxygen provides lone-pair electrons and charge balance to stabilize Ir single atoms, resulting in the enhancement of both OER activity and durability. In particular, Ir_0.08 Co_2.92 O₄ NWs exhibit an excellent mass activity of 1343.1 A g^-1 and turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.04 s^-1 at overpotentials of 300 mV. And this catalyst also displays significant stability in acid at 10 mA cm^-2 over 100 h. Overall water splitting using Pt/C as the hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst and Ir_0.08 Co_2.92 O₄ NWs as the OER catalyst takes only a cell voltage of 1.494 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 with a perfect stability. This work demonstrates a simple approach to produce highly active and acid-stable transition metal oxides electrocatalysts with trace Ir.
