Near-Infrared-Absorbing B-N Lewis Pair-Functionalized Anthracenes: Electronic Structure Tuning, Conformational Isomerism, and Applications in Photothermal Cancer Therapy

QR-code enabled additive manufactured multiplex-immunosensor to detect DENV serotypes in dengue patient validate with indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT)

The current work shows the advancement of an additive manufactured multiplex immunosensor for the detection of dengue serotypes 1&2 in dengue patients on a single device with the LOD of 12.5 ng/ml. In this work, we created a QR-Code enabled additive manufactured case comprised of a paper-based electrode coated with ZnO NPs, which helps to enhance the detection signal and make it more selective, both serotype antibodies (DENV1-Ab & DENV2-Ab) were employed against DENV serotypes (DENV1-Ag & DENV2-Ag. QR-code technology was also integrated with the established platform to deliver sensor supporting information so that anybody may quickly obtain supporting sensing result details by scanning with a smartphone. The proposed highly advanced platform successfully detected DENV serotypes in dengue patients and showing a wide range of detection from 12.5 to 200 ng/ml with a LOD of 12.5 ng/ml.The results were also validated with conventional testing, i.e., Indirect Fluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT), so the developed multiplex-sensor became more applicable for the detection of DENV serotypes on a single tool having high sensitivity and selectivity, with a potential of commercialization.

Green stabilization of silver nanoparticles over the surface of biocompatible Fe3O4@CMC for bactericidal applications

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, especially in agents associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), has initiated an exciting effort to develop biocompatible nanoparticles to confront their threat. Designing simple, cheap, biocompatible, and efficient nanomaterials as bactericidal agents seems to be a judicious response to this problem. Here, a solvothermal method was hired for the one-pot preparation of the cellulose gum (carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) magnetic composite to prepare a cost-effective, efficient, and biocompatible support for the plant-based stabilization of the silver NPs. The green stabilization of the Ag NPs is performed using Euphorbia plant extract with high efficiency. Various characterization methods, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, and VSM were used to study the composition and properties of Fe3O4@CMC/AgNPs. The composite shows well integrity and monodispersity with a mean diameter of <300 nm, indicating its potential for bio-related application. The CMC functionalities of the proposed material facilitated the stabilization of the Ag NPs, resulting in their monodispersity and enhanced performance. The manufactured composite was used as an antibacterial agent for the removal of UTIs agents, collected from 200 hospitalized patients with acute coronary syndrome, which showed promising results. This study showed that the concentration of the Ag NPs has a direct relationship with the antibacterial properties of the composite.

Green synthesis and cytotoxic activity of functionalized naphthyridine

A multicomponent synthesis of 1,8-naphthyridine with high yields utilizing benzaldehydes, malononitrile, phenol, and acetylenic esters in aqueous solution at room temperature in the presence of SiO2/Fe3O4 as a reusable catalyst is reported. Using the MTT test, the cytotoxic properties of all the produced compounds were assessed in vitro against cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and A549) and normal cell lines (BEAS-2B). It was discovered that the most effective cytotoxic agent, doxorubicin-like in its lack of selectivity, was the derivative 5h. On the other hand, the compound 5c might be regarded as an equipotent molecule with greater selectivity in relation to doxorubicin. Also, this study investigates the antioxidant effects of 1,8-naphthyridine carboxylates, along with other studies conducted in this study.

Removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotic and sulfonated dye by functionalized Persea americana seed powder: Appraisal on phase transfer kinetics, equilibrium, economics, and applications in rural settings

The study focuses on reactive orange 16 (RO16), a sulfonated dye, and ciprofloxacin (CiP), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic treatment from aquatic surface by adsorption. The functionalized Persea americana seed powder (PASP) was developed by acid hydrolysis technique and investigated for RO16 and CiP removal in batch scale at different concentrations for CiP and RO16, pH (2-8), contact duration and temperature (303-318K). Utilizing a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), the generated native PASP were assessed for their morphological characteristics. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was applied to examine the performing characteristics of PASP. Experimental findings with four kinetic mathematical models allowed the estimation of the process involved in the biosorption. The most effective agreement was explained by the pseudo-second-order model and Sips isotherm (Cip = 34.603 mg/g and RO16 = 30.357 mg/g) at 303K temperature. For Cip Process economics of the biosorbent was done, and it was observed that it was less than the readily market-available activated carbon.

High-Performance Metabolic Profiling of High-Risk Thyroid Nodules by ZrMOF Hybrids

Thyroid nodules (TNs) have emerged as the most prevalent endocrine disorder in China. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) remains the standard diagnostic method for assessing TN malignancy, although a majority of FNA results indicate benign conditions. Balancing diagnostic accuracy while mitigating overdiagnosis in patients with benign nodules poses a significant clinical challenge. Precise, noninvasive, and high-throughput screening methods for high-risk TN diagnosis are highly desired but remain less explored. Developing such approaches can improve the accuracy of noninvasive methods like ultrasound imaging and reduce overdiagnosis of benign nodule patients caused by invasive procedures. Herein, we investigate the application of gold-doped zirconium-based metal-organic framework (ZrMOF/Au) nanostructures for metabolic profiling of thyroid diseases. This approach enables the efficient extraction of urine metabolite fingerprints with high throughput, low background noise, and reproducibility. Utilizing partial least-squares discriminant analysis and four machine learning models, including neural network (NN), random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), and support vector machine (SVM), we achieved an enhanced diagnostic accuracy (98.6%) for discriminating thyroid cancer (TC) from low-risk TNs by using a diagnostic panel. Through the analysis of metabolic differences, potential pathway changes between benign nodule and malignancy are identified. This work explores the potential of rapid thyroid disease screening using the ZrMOF/Au-assisted LDI-MS platform, providing a potential method for noninvasive screening of thyroid malignant tumors. Integrating this approach with imaging technologies such as ultrasound can enhance the reliability of noninvasive diagnostic methods for malignant tumor screening, helping to prevent unnecessary invasive procedures and reducing the risk of overdiagnosis and overtreatment in patients with benign nodules.

Designing and Synthesis of Novel Fexofenadine-Derived Hydrazone-Schiff Bases as Potential Urease Inhibitors: In-Vitro, Molecular Docking and DFT Investigations

Thirteen novel hydrazone-Schiff bases (3-15) of fexofenadine were succesfully synthesized, structurally deduced and finally assessed their capability to inhibit urease enzyme (in vitro). In the series, six compounds 12 (IC50=10.19±0.16 μM), 11 (IC50=15.05±1.11 μM), 10 (IC50=17.01±1.23 μM), 9 (IC50=17.22±0.81 μM), 13 (IC50=19.31±0.18 μM), and 14 (IC50=19.62±0.21 μM) displayed strong inhibitory action better than the standard thiourea (IC50=21.14±0.24 μM), while the remaining compounds displayed significant to less inhibition. LUMO and HOMO showed the transferring of charges from molecules to biological transfer and MEP map showed the chemically reactive zone appropriate for drug action are calculated using DFT. AIM charges, non-bonding orbitals, and ELF are also computed. The urease protein binding analysis benefited from the docking studies.

From diagnosis to therapy: The critical role of lncRNAs in hepatoblastoma

According to findings, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serves an integral part in growth and development of a variety of human malignancies, including Hepatoblastoma (HB). HB is a rare kind of carcinoma of the liver that mostly affects kids and babies under the age of three. Its manifestations include digestive swelling, abdominal discomfort, and losing weight. This thorough investigation digs into the many roles that lncRNAs serve in HB, giving views into their varied activities as well as possible therapeutic consequences. The function of lncRNAs in HB cell proliferation, apoptosis, migratory and penetrating capacities, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and therapy tolerance is discussed. Various lncRNA regulatory roles are investigated in depth, yielding information on their effect on essential cell processes such as angiogenesis, apoptosis, immunity, and growth. Circulating lncRNAs are currently acknowledged as potential indications for the initial stages of identification of cancer, with the ability to diagnose as well as forecast. 2D Materials in Advanced Electronic Biosensors for Point-of-Care Devices

Since two-dimensionalal (2D) materials have distinct chemical and physical properties, they are widely used in various sectors of modern technologies. In the domain of diagnostic biodevices, particularly for point-of-care (PoC) biomedical diagnostics, 2D-based field-effect transistor biosensors (bio-FETs) demonstrate substantial potential. Here, in this review article, the operational mechanisms and detection capabilities of biosensing devices utilizing graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), black phosphorus, and other 2D materials are addressed in detail. The incorporation of these materials into FET-based biosensors offers significant advantages, including low detection limits (LOD), real-time monitoring, label-free diagnosis, and exceptional selectivity. The review also highlights the diverse applications of these biosensors, ranging from conventional to wearable devices, underscoring the versatility of 2D material-based FET devices. Additionally, the review provides a comprehensive assessment of the limitations and challenges faced by these devices, along with insights into future prospects and advancements. Notably, a detailed comparison of FET-based biosensors is tabulated along with various other biosensing platforms and their working mechanisms. Ultimately, this review aims to stimulate further research and innovation in this field while educating the scientific community about the latest advancements in 2D materials-based biosensors.

Harnessing pyroptosis for lung cancer therapy: The impact of NLRP3 inflammasome activation

Lung cancer is still a global health challenge in terms of high incidence, morbidity, and mortality. Recent scientific studies have determined that pyroptosis, a highly inflammatory form of programmed cell death, can be identified as a potential lung cancer therapeutic target. The NLRP3 inflammasome acts as a critical mediator in this process and, upon activation, activates multiprotein complex formation as well as caspase-1 activation. This process, triggered by a release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, results in pyroptotic cell death. Also, the relationship between the NLRP3 inflammasome and lung cancer was justified by its influence on tumour growth or metastasis. The molecular pathways produce progenitive mediators and remake the tissue. Finally, targeting NLRP3 inflammasome for pyroptosis induction and inhibition of its activation appears to be a promising lung cancer treatment approach. This technique makes cancer treatment more promising and personalized. This review explores the role of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and its possibilities in lung cancer treatment.

Circular RNAs and the JAK/STAT pathway: New frontiers in cancer therapeutics

Circular RNAs, known as circRNAs, have drawn more attention to cancer biology in the last few years. Novel functions of circRNAs in cancer therapy open promising prospects for personalized medicine. This review focuses on the molecular properties and potential of circRNAs as biomarkers or therapeutic targets in cancer treatment. Unique properties of circular RNAs associated with a circular form provide stability and resilience to RNA exonuclease degradation. Circular RNAs' most important characteristic is that they are involved in the JAK/STAT pathway associated with oncogenesis. Notably, their deregulation has been reported in multiple carcinomas due to involvement in JAK/STAT signaling cascade modulation. Increased knowledge about circRNAs' interaction with the JAK/STAT pathway leads to the emergence of new possibilities for targeted cancer therapy. In addition, since circRNAs demonstrate tissue-relatedness of expression, they may be a reliable biomarker for predicting and diagnosing cancer. With the development of new technologies for targeting circRNAs, novel therapeutics can be produced that offer more personalized cancer treatment options based on the nature of the patient. The present review explores the exciting prospects of circRNAs for transforming cancer treatment into personalized medicine. It describes the current understanding of circRNA biology, its relationship to tumorigenesis, and possible targeting methods.

Targeting ferroptosis regulators in lung cancer: Exploring natural products

Lung cancer remains a formidable global health challenge, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies for improved efficacy. This review explores the untapped potential of natural products and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in lung cancer therapy, focusing on targeting ferroptosis regulators. Natural compounds, such as curcumin and resveratrol, exhibit diverse anti-cancer mechanisms, complemented by TCM's holistic approach rooted in a 3500-year history. Emphasizing the induction of cell death, particularly ferroptosis, the review highlights its significance in overcoming challenges like resistance to conventional therapies. Key ferroptosis regulators are explored in the context of natural products and TCM. The impact of these treatments on crucial pathways, such as antioxidant mechanisms (GPX4, SLC7A11, and NRF2), iron metabolism regulators, and lipid and mitochondria pathways, is examined. The findings provide a comprehensive overview of how natural products and TCM modulate ferroptosis in lung cancer, offering valuable insights for the development of innovative, side-effect-reduced therapeutic strategies. This work holds promise for transforming the landscape of lung cancer treatment by integrating the rich resources of nature into conventional therapeutic paradigms.

Electrochemical Determination of Cyclobenzaprine Hydrochloride Muscle Relaxant Using Novel S-GCN/TiO2-Based Carbon Electrode

We have successfully prepared the titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) and sulfur-incorporated graphitic carbon nitride (S-GCN)-modified carbon paste electrode (CPE). The CPEs modified with TiO2 NPs and S-GCN were employed for detecting and quantifying the skeletal muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride (CBP) using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry (SWV) techniques. Optimal electrochemical conditions were indicated by the pH study results, with the highest peak current observed at a physiological pH of 7.4. The electrochemical process was determined to involve an equivalent number of protons (H+) and electrons (e-). The concentration variation of CBP (ranging from 0.06 to 10 × 10-7 mol L-1) was explored using SWV. The limits of detection and quantification were determined as 6.4 × 10-9 and 2.1 × 10-8 M, respectively. The proposed electrode configuration was applied to analyze real samples, including water, biomedical, and pharmaceutical specimens.

AUNP-12 Near-Infrared Fluorescence Probes across NIR-I to NIR-II Enable In Vivo Detection of PD-1/PD-L1 Axis in the Tumor Microenvironment

The innovative PD-1/PD-L1 pathway strategy is gaining significant traction in cancer therapeutics. However, fluctuating response rates of 20-40% to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, coupled with the risk of hyperprogression after immunotherapy, underscore the need for accurate patient selection and the identification of more beneficiaries. Molecular imaging, specifically near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging, is a valuable alternative for real-time, noninvasive visualization of dynamic PD-L1 expression in vivo. This research introduces AUNP-12, a novel PD-L1-targeting peptide antagonist conjugated with Cy5.5 and CH1055 for first (NIR-I) and second near-infrared (NIR-II) imaging. These probes have proven to be effective in mapping PD-L1 expression across various mouse tumor models, offering insights into tumor-immune interactions. This study highlights the potential of AUNP-12-Cy5.5 and AUNP-12-CH1055 for guiding clinical immunotherapy through precise patient stratification and dynamic monitoring, supporting the shift toward molecular imaging for personalized cancer care.

Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antipyretic potential of ethanolic extract of Aristida depressa Retz through in vitro, in vivo, and in silico models

Uncontrolled inflammation is a crucial factor in the development of many diseases. Anti-inflammatory molecules based on natural sources are being actively studied, among which Aristida depressa Retz (Ar.dp) has been traditionally used as a paste to heal inflammation. The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic potential of an ethanolic extract of A. depressa through a battery of in vivo and in vitro models. The ethanolic extract of A. depressa was prepared by maceration and chemically characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography, which revealed the presence of quercetin, vanillic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, m-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, and sinapic acid; its antioxidant capacity was then screened with the DPPH in vitro assay, which indicated moderate scavenging capacity. A protein denaturation assay was next performed to evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory potential of Ar.dp, which showed significant inhibition (44.44%) compared to the standard drug (diclofenac sodium), with 89.19% inhibition at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The in vivo safety profile of Ar.dp was evaluated in accordance with the OECD-425 acute toxicity guidelines and found to be safe up to 5 g/kg. The in vivo anti-inflammatory potentials of Ar.dp were evaluated at three different doses (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg) in acute (carrageenan-induced edema: 84.60%, histamine-induced paw edema: 84%), sub-chronic (cotton-pellet-induced granuloma: 57.54%), and chronic (complete-Freund's-adjuvant-induced arthritis: 82.2%) models. Our results showed that Ar.dp had significant (p < 0.05) anti-inflammatory effects over diclofenac sodium in the acute and chronic models. Histopathology studies indicated reduced infiltration of paw tissues with inflammatory cells in Ar.dp-treated animals. Similarly, Ar.dp showed significant (p < 0.05) analgesic (yeast-induced-pyrexia model: 23.53%) and antipyretic (acetic-acid-induced writhing model: 51%) effects in a time-dependent manner. In silico studies on the interactions of COX-1 and COX-2 with the eight ligands mentioned earlier confirmed the inhibition of enzymes responsible for inflammation and fever. Based on the findings of the present study, it is concluded that Ar.dp has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties that are likely linked to its pharmacologically active phenolic bioactive molecules.

Investigating the potential of monocyclic B9N9 and C18 rings for the electrochemical sensing, and adsorption of carbazole-based anti-cancer drug derivatives: DFT-based first-principle study

CONTEXT

For the first time, the use of monocyclic rings C18 and B9N9 as sensors for the sensing of carbazole-based anti-cancer drugs, such as tetrahydrocarbazole (THC), mukonal (MKN), murrayanine (MRY), and ellipticine (EPT), is described using DFT simulations and computational characterization. The geometries, electronic properties, stability studies, sensitivity, and adsorption capabilities of C18 and B9N9 counterparts towards the selected compounds confirm that the analytes interact through active cavities of the C18 and B9N9 rings of the complexes.

METHODS

Based on the interaction energies, the sensitivity of surfaces towards EPT, MKN, MRY, and THC analytes is observed. The interaction energy of EPT@B9N9, MKN@B9N9, MRY@B9N9, and THC@B9N9 complexes are observed - 20.40, - 19.49, - 20.07, and - 18.27 kcal/mol respectively which is more exothermic than EPT@C18, MKN@C18, MRY@C18, and THC@C18 complexes are - 16.37, - 13.97, - 13.96, and - 11.39 kcal/mol respectively. According to findings from the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and the reduced density gradient (RDG), dispersion forces play a significant role in maintaining the stability of these complexes. The electronic properties including FMOs, density of states (DOS), natural bond orbitals (NBO), charge transfer, and absorption studies are carried out. In comparison of B9N9 and C18, the analyte recovery time for C18 is much shorter (9.91 × 10-11 for THC@C18) than that for B9N9 shorter recovery time value of 3.75 × 10-9 for EPT@B9N9. These results suggest that our reported sensors B9N9 and C18 make it faster to detect adsorbed molecules at room temperature. The sensor response is more prominent in B9N9 due to its fine energy gap and high adsorption energy. Consequently, it is possible to think of these monocyclic systems as a potential material for sensor applications.

Novel thymohydroquinone gallate derivative loaded ligand modified quantum dots as pH-sensitive multi-modal theragnostic agent for cancer treatment

BACKGROUND

Nanomedicine, as the combination of radiopharmaceutical and nanocarrier (QDs), is developed for treating cancer. Gallic acid is antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic. Typical retention time of gallic acid is approximately 4 to 8 h. To increase the retention time gallic acid is converted to prodrug by adding lipophilic moieties, encapsulating in lipophilic nanoparticles, or liposome formation. Similarly, thymoquinone is powerful antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effect, with reduced DNA damage.

METHODS

In this study, a hydrophilic drug (gallic acid) is chemically linked to the hydrophobic drug (thymohydroquinone) to overcome the limitations of co-delivery of drugs. Thymohydroquinone (THQG) as the combination of gallic acid (GA) and thymoquinone (THQ) is loaded onto the PEI functionalized antimonene quantum dots (AM-QDs) and characterized by FTIR, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Zeta sizer, SEM and AFM, in-vitro and in-vivo assay, and hemolysis.

RESULTS

The calculated drug loading efficiency is 90 %. Drug release study suggests the drug combination is pH sensitive and it can encounters acidic pH, releasing the drug from the nanocarrier. The drug and drug-loaded nanocarrier possesses low cytotoxicity and cell viability on MCF-7 and Cal-27 cell lines. The proposed drug delivery system is radiolabeled with Iodine-131 (131I) and Technetium (99mTc) and its deposition in various organs of rats' bodies is examined by SPECT-CT and gamma camera. Hemolytic activity of 2, 4, 6, and 8 μg/mL is 1.78, 4.16, 9.77, and 15.79 %, respectively, reflecting low levels of hemolysis. The system also sustains oxidative stress in cells and environment, decreasing ROS production to shield cells and keep them healthy.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study suggest that the proposed drug carrier system can be used as a multi-modal theragnostic agent in cancer treatment.

Targeting the Wnt/β-catenin cascade in osteosarcoma: The potential of ncRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutics

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a bone cancer which stems from several sources and presents with diverse clinical features, making evaluation and treatment difficult. Chemotherapy tolerance and restricted treatment regimens hinder progress in survival rates, requiring new and creative therapeutic strategies. The Wnt/β-catenin system has been recognised as an essential driver of OS development, providing potential avenues for therapy. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), such as circular RNAs (circRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and microRNAs (miRNAs), are essential in modulating the Wnt/β-catenin cascade in OS. MiRNAs control the system by targeting vital elements, while lncRNAs and circRNAs interact with system genes, impacting OS growth and advancement. This paper thoroughly analyses the intricate interplay between ncRNAs and the Wnt/β-catenin cascade in OS. We examine how uncontrolled levels of miRNAs, lncRNAs, and circRNAs lead to an abnormal Wnt/β-catenin network, which elevates the development, spread, and susceptibility to the treatment of OS. We emphasise the potential of ncRNAs as diagnostic indicators and avenues for treatment in OS care. The review offers valuable insights for academics and clinicians studying OS aetiology and creating new treatment techniques for the ncRNA-Wnt/β-catenin cascade. Utilising the oversight roles of ncRNAs in the Wnt/β-catenin system shows potential for enhancing the outcomes of patients and progressing precision medicine in OS therapy.

Unveiling the potential of FOXO3 in lung cancer: From molecular insights to therapeutic prospects

Lung cancer poses a significant challenge regarding molecular heterogeneity, as it encompasses a wide range of molecular alterations and cancer-related pathways. Recent discoveries made it feasible to thoroughly investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying lung cancer, giving rise to the possibility of novel therapeutic strategies relying on molecularly targeted drugs. In this context, forkhead box O3 (FOXO3), a member of forkhead transcription factors, has emerged as a crucial protein commonly dysregulated in cancer cells. The regulation of the FOXO3 in reacting to external stimuli plays a key role in maintaining cellular homeostasis as a component of the molecular machinery that determines whether cells will survive or dies. Indeed, various extrinsic cues regulate FOXO3, affecting its subcellular location and transcriptional activity. These regulations are mediated by diverse signaling pathways, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), and protein interactions that eventually drive post-transcriptional modification of FOXO3. Nevertheless, while it is no doubt that FOXO3 is implicated in numerous aspects of lung cancer, it is unclear whether they act as tumor suppressors, promotors, or both based on the situation. However, FOXO3 serves as an intriguing possible target in lung cancer therapeutics while widely used anti-cancer chemo drugs can regulate it. In this review, we describe a summary of recent findings on molecular mechanisms of FOXO3 to clarify that targeting its activity might hold promise in lung cancer treatment.

Empowering Photovoltaic Panel Anti-Icing: Superhydrophobic Organic Composite Coating with In Situ Photothermal and Transparency

Solar energy is widely used in photovoltaic power generation as a kind of clean energy. However, the liquid film, frosting, and icing on the photovoltaic module seriously limit the efficiency of photovoltaic power generation. We developed a composite coating (Y6-NanoSH) by combining an in situ photothermal and transparent Y6 organic film with a nanosuperhydrophobic material. The Y6-NanoSH coated glass exhibited excellent optical clarity both indoors and outdoors, indicating that the coating holds great promise in anti-icing applications for photovoltaic panels. The Y6-NanoSH coating absorbs very little visible light but instead absorbs in the near-infrared region, thereby emitting heat. When exposed to sunlight, the Y6-NanoSH coated photovoltaic panel raises its surface temperature, inhibiting the growth and accumulation of ice and frost on its surface. This is achieved through a combination of photothermal emission and superhydrophobic repellency, which promotes the evaporation and rolling away of water droplets. This validates our success in developing a photothermal, transparent, and superhydrophobic coating with excellent anti-icing capabilities, suitable for use on photovoltaic panels, as well as potential applications in car windscreens, transmission lines, curtain walls, and weather radomes.

Stealth Nanocarriers in Cancer Therapy: a Comprehensive Review of Design, Functionality, and Clinical Applications

Nanotechnology has significantly transformed cancer treatment by introducing innovative methods for delivering drugs effectively. This literature review provided an in-depth analysis of the role of nanocarriers in cancer therapy, with a particular focus on the critical concept of the 'stealth effect.' The stealth effect refers to the ability of nanocarriers to evade the immune system and overcome physiological barriers. The review investigated the design and composition of various nanocarriers, such as liposomes, micelles, and inorganic nanoparticles, highlighting the importance of surface modifications and functionalization. The complex interaction between the immune system, opsonization, phagocytosis, and the protein corona was examined to understand the stealth effect. The review carefully evaluated strategies to enhance the stealth effect, including surface coating with polymers, biomimetic camouflage, and targeting ligands. The in vivo behavior of stealth nanocarriers and their impact on pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and toxicity were also systematically examined. Additionally, the review presented clinical applications, case studies of approved nanocarrier-based cancer therapies, and emerging formulations in clinical trials. Future directions and obstacles in the field, such as advancements in nanocarrier engineering, personalized nanomedicine, regulatory considerations, and ethical implications, were discussed in detail. The review concluded by summarizing key findings and emphasizing the transformative potential of stealth nanocarriers in revolutionizing cancer therapy. This review enhanced the comprehension of nanocarrier-based cancer therapies and their potential impact by providing insights into advanced studies, clinical applications, and regulatory considerations.

Study of some graph theoretical parameters for the structures of anticancer drugs

Eigenvalues have great importance in the field of mathematics, and their relevance extends beyond this area to include several other disciplines such as economics, chemistry, and numerous fields. According to our study, eigenvalues are utilized in chemistry to express a chemical compound's numerous physical properties as well as its energy form. It is important to get a comprehensive understanding of the interrelationship underlying mathematics and chemistry. The anti-bonding phase is correlated with positive eigenvalues, whereas the bonding level is connected with negative eigenvalues. Additionally, the non-bonded level corresponds to eigenvalues of zero. This study focuses on the analysis of various structures of anticancer drugs, specifically examining their characteristic polynomials, eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix, matching number and nullity. Consequently, the selected structures of the aforementioned anticancer drugs exhibit stability since they are composed of closed-shell molecules, characterized by a nullity value of zero.

Exploring the Potential of Halotolerant Actinomycetes from Rann of Kutch, India: A Study on the Synthesis, Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Silver Nanoparticles

A tremendous increase in the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has been noticed in the last decades, which is due to their unique properties at the nano dimension. The present research work deals with synthesis mediated by the actinomycete Streptomyces tendae of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), isolated from Little and Greater Rann of Kutch, India. The confirmation of the formation of AgNPs by the actinomycetes was carried out by using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer where an absorbance peak was obtained at 420 nm. The X-ray diffraction pattern demonstrated five characteristic diffraction peaks indexed at the lattice plane (111), (200), (231), (222), and (220). Fourier transform infrared showed typical bands at 531 to 1635, 2111, and 3328 cm-1. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the spherical-shaped AgNPs particles have diameters in the range of 40 to 90 nm. The particle size analysis displayed the mean particle size of AgNPs in aqueous medium, which was about 55 nm (±27 nm), bearing a negative charge on their surfaces. The potential of the S. tendae-mediated synthesized AgNPs was evaluated for their antimicrobial, anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), anti-biofilm, and anti-oxidant activity. The maximum inhibitory effect was observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa at (8 µg/mL), followed by Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger at (32 µg/mL), and against Candida albicans (64 µg/mL), whereas Bacillus subtilis (128 µg/mL) and Staphylococcus aureus (256 µg/mL) were much less sensitive to AgNPs. The biosynthesized AgNPs displayed activity against MRSA, and the free radical scavenging activity was observed with an increase in the dosage of AgNPs from 25 to 200 µg/mL. AgNPs in combination with ampicillin displayed inhibition of the development of biofilm in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae at 98% and 83%, respectively. AgNPs were also successfully coated on the surface of cotton to prepare antimicrobial surgical cotton, which demonstrated inhibitory action against Bacillus subtilis (15 mm) and Escherichia coli (12 mm). The present research integrates microbiology, nanotechnology, and biomedical science to formulate environmentally friendly antimicrobial materials using halotolerant actinomycetes, evolving green nanotechnology in the biomedical field. Moreover, this study broadens the understanding of halotolerant actinomycetes and their potential and opens possibilities for formulating new antimicrobial products and therapies.

Fabrication of a novel polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan-Schiff base/Fe2O3 nanocomposite for efficient adsorption of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions from aqueous solution

A novel magnetic polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan-Schiff base/Fe2O3 (PVP/CS-SB/Fe2O3) adsorbent was prepared by one-pot facile co-precipitation route for adsorption of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions from aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared-spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were used to characterize the synthesized PVP/CS-SB/Fe2O3. The results predicted that the successfully synthesis of magnetic CSSB-PVP@Fe2O3. The effects of important factors such as pH solution, contact time, concentration of metal ions, adsorbent dose and co-existing ions on Pb(II) and Hg(II) adsorption were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions at optimal conditions were 120 mg/g and 102.5 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic studies predicted that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model as chemisorption using the coordination of active sites of PVP/CS-SB/Fe2O3 with the metal ions and also n-π interactions. Reproducibility results predicted that the excellent regeneration ability after 6 adsorption cycles. According to the results of this work, the PVP/CS-SB/Fe2O3 nanocomposite is promising for Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions adsorption and can be potential as a simple, low-cost, high-efficient adsorbent for decontamination of other heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.

Green and efficient synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals from Hamelia patens leftover via hydrolysis of microwave assisted-ionic liquid (MWAIL) pretreated microcrystalline cellulose

The efficient bioconversion of the lignocellulosic agro-waste has immense importance in biorefinery processing in extracting the cellulose and saccharide fractions. To achieve this, a series of chemical pretreatments is employed, thus concerning environmental threats limit its use. Therefore, an ionic liquid is employed for pretreatment before sustainable extractions owing to its safe manipulation, recycling, and reusability. Specifically, microwave-assisted ionic liquid (MWAIL) pretreatment has significant importance in extracting high cellulose yield at less thermal power consumption. In this study, the leftover stalks of Hamelia patens were subjected to MWAIL pretreatment at 60, 70, 80, and 90 °C to extract microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Subsequently, the MCC was fabricated into cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) through hydrolytic treatment using acidic and ionic liquids and denoted as CNC-AH and CNC-ILH. Thus obtained CNC was characterized by FTIR, FESEM, XRD, and TGA to investigate the influence of solvent on its morphology, crystallinity, and thermal stability of CNC. The results support that the CNC-ILH has comparatively more thermal and dispersal stability with a reduced crystallinity index than CNC-AH. The surprising results of CNC-ILH signify its utilization in diverse applications in the food and industrial sectors.

Boosting antitumor efficacy using docetaxel-loaded nanoplatforms: from cancer therapy to regenerative medicine approaches

The intersection of nanotechnology and pharmacology has revolutionized the delivery and efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents, notably docetaxel, a key drug in cancer treatment. Traditionally limited by poor solubility and significant side effects, docetaxel's therapeutic potential has been significantly enhanced through its incorporation into nanoplatforms, such as nanofibers and nanoparticles. This advancement offers targeted delivery, controlled release, and improved bioavailability, dramatically reducing systemic toxicity and enhancing patient outcomes. Nanofibers provide a versatile scaffold for the controlled release of docetaxel, utilizing techniques like electrospinning to tailor drug release profiles. Nanoparticles, on the other hand, enable precise drug delivery to tumor cells, minimizing damage to healthy tissues through sophisticated encapsulation methods such as nanoprecipitation and emulsion. These nanotechnologies not only improve the pharmacokinetic properties of docetaxel but also open new avenues in regenerative medicine by facilitating targeted therapy and cellular regeneration. This narrative review highlights the transformative impact of docetaxel-loaded nanoplatforms in oncology and beyond, showcasing the potential of nanotechnology to overcome the limitations of traditional chemotherapy and pave the way for future innovations in drug delivery and regenerative therapies. Through these advancements, nanotechnology promises a new era of precision medicine, enhancing the efficacy of cancer treatments while minimizing adverse effects.

Carborane-arene fused boracyclic analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accessed by intramolecular borylation

Arenes are 2D aromatics while dicarbadodecaborane clusters are branded as 3D aromatic molecules. In this work we prepare molecules that feature fused 2D/3D aromatic systems that represent boron-doped analogues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-carborane substituent enables swift arene borylation on boron bromide or hydride precursors to furnish five- and six-membered boracycles in conjugation with the arene. The mechanism was modeled by DFT computations implying a concerted transition state and analyzing the photophysical properties revealed high quantum yields in the six-membered systems.

Novel carbazolyl-thiazolyl-chromone and carbazolyl-thiazolyl-pyrazole hybrids: synthesis, cytotoxicity evaluation and molecular docking studies

A simple synthetic method was performed to design a novel series of polycyclic systems consisting of carbazole-thiazolidinone-chromone hybrids 4a-e and carbazole-thiazolidinone-pyrazole hybrids 5a-e in excellent yields. The methodology depended on the one-pot four-component reaction of 3-amino-9-ethylcarbazole, substituted isothiocyanates, ethyl bromoacetate and 6-methyl-3-formylchromone in ethanol under ultrasound waves at 50 °C to give the carbazole-thiazolidinone-chromone hybrids 4a-e. The latter isolated products were treated with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol under ultrasound waves at 50 °C affording the corresponding carbazole-thiazolidinone-pyrazole hybrids 5a-e. Spectral and analytical data confirmed the structures of all the synthesized compounds. The target compounds were screened for their in vitro anticancer activities against HCT116, PC3 and HepG2 cancer cell lines using the standard SRB method. Fortunately, both compounds 5dand5e were the most active against all cancer cell lines compared with doxorubicin and can be promising anticancer agents. Both bioactive products 5band5e were studied by the molecular docking to see how they bind with VEGFR-2 receptor. The results indicated that those compounds exhibited high affinities towards VEGFR-2 and established remarkably similar interactions to those of the powerful VEGFR-2-KDR.

Targeting the autophagy-miRNA axis in prostate cancer: toward novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies

Since prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death, a better understanding of the molecular pathways guiding its development is imperative. A key factor in prostate cancer is autophagy, a cellular mechanism that affects both cell survival and death. Autophagy is essential in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Autophagy is a physiological mechanism wherein redundant or malfunctioning cellular constituents are broken down and recycled. It is essential for preserving cellular homeostasis and is implicated in several physiological and pathological conditions, including cancer. Autophagy has been linked to metastasis, tumor development, and treatment resistance in prostate cancer. The deregulation of miRNAs related to autophagy appears to be a crucial element in the etiology of prostate cancer. These miRNAs influence the destiny of cancer cells by finely regulating autophagic mechanisms. Numerous investigations have emphasized the dual function of specific miRNAs in prostate cancer, which alter autophagy-related pathways to function as either tumor suppressors or oncogenes. Notably, miRNAs have been linked to the control of autophagy and the proliferation, apoptosis, and migration of prostate cancer cells. To create customized therapy approaches, it is imperative to comprehend the dynamic interplay between autophagy and miRNAs in prostate cancer. The identification of key miRNAs provides potential diagnostic and prognostic markers. Unraveling the complex network of lncRNAs, like PCA3, also expands the repertoire of molecular targets for therapeutic interventions. This review explores the intricate interplay between autophagy and miRNAs in prostate cancer, focusing on their regulatory roles in cellular processes ranging from survival to programmed cell death.

The Synergistic Mechanisms of AIE, ESIPT and ICT in the α-cyanostilbene-based Derivative: A Red-fluorescence Probe With a Large Stokes' Shift for Copper (II) Ion Determination and Reversible Response to Amine/acid Vapor

Herein, α-cyanostilbene-based luminogen with an electron donor-π-electron acceptor (D-π-A) architecture was formylated into the salicylaldehyde-analogue luminogen, followed by the Schiff base reaction with phenylamine, a red-emitting luminogen was elaborately designed and successfully synthesized in a high yield of 89%. Its well-defined structure was confirmed by FT-IR, MALDI-TOF-MS, HR-MS and 1H/13C NMR technologies. Based on the synergistic mechanisms of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), it enjoyed a red-fluorescence emission at 627 nm in THF/water mixtures (fw = 95%) and was used as a probe. Moreover, the TLC-based test strips loaded with the probe not only exhibited the reversible fluorescence response to amine/acid vapor but also showed sensitive and selective fluorescence response towards Cu2+. Furthermore, the fluorescence titration experiment between the probe and Cu2+ in THF/water mixtures (fw = 95%, pH = 7.4) revealed that the detection limit was 1.18 × 10-7 M and the binding constant was 1.59 × 105. Job's plot experiment and HR-MS analysis revealed the 2:1 binding stoichiometry of the probe with Cu2+. The method enabled real-time assessment for Cu2+ in real water samples. This study could offer insightful opinions on the development of long-wavelength emissive luminogens based on α-cyanostilbene.

A Nanographene-Porphyrin Hybrid for Near-Infrared-Ii Phototheranostics

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI)-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) window has been attracting attention as a promising cancer theranostic platform. Here, it is reported that the π-extended porphyrins fused with one or two nanographene units (NGP-1 and NGP-2) can serve as a new class of NIR-responsive organic agents, displaying absorption extending to ≈1000 and ≈1400 nm in the NIR-I and NIR-II windows, respectively. NGP-1 and NGP-2 are dispersed in water through encapsulation into self-assembled nanoparticles (NPs), achieving high photothermal conversion efficiency of 60% and 69%, respectively, under 808 and 1064 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, the NIR-II-active NGP-2-NPs demonstrated promising photoacoustic responses, along with high photostability and biocompatibility, enabling PAI and efficient NIR-II PTT of cancer in vivo.

Direct C-H electrophilic borylation with (C6F5)2B-NTf2 to generate B-N dibenzo[a,h]pyrenes

The borylation of aryl substituted pyridines is an effective way of preparing B-N doped conjugated organic frameworks. Trihaloborane Lewis acids are often employed for this protocol, and may require further functionalization to replace the remaining halides on boron. We report a new, fully characterized, electrophilic borylating agent, (C6F5)2B(κ2-NTf2), that smoothly incorporates a -B(C6F5)2 unit into the model substrate 2-phenylpyridine. To demonstrate its utility in preparing more complex B-N doped structures, we use it to prepare seven examples of the 6a,13a-diaza-7,14-dibora-dibenzo[a,h]pyrene framework, with substituents of varying donor properties. The structural, redox, and photophysical properties of this new family of B-N doped polycyclic hydrocarbon compounds were probed experimentally and computationally.

BN-Isosteres of Nonacene with Antiaromatic B2 C4 and N2 C4 Heterocycles: Synthesis and Strong Luminescence

Embedding both boron and nitrogen into the backbone of acenes to generate their isoelectronic structures has significantly enriched the acene chemistry to offer appealing properties. However, only small BN-heteroacenes have been extensively investigated, with BN-heptacenes as the hitherto longest homologue. Herein, we report the synthesis of three new nonacene BN-isosteres via incorporating a pair of antiaromatic B2 C4 and N2 C4 heterocycles, representing a new length record for BN-heteroacenes. The distance between the B2 C4 and N2 C4 rings affects the contribution of the charge-separated resonance forms, leading to tunable antiaromaticity of the two heterocycles. The adjusted local antiaromaticity manifests substantial influence on the molecular orbital arrangement, and consequently, the radiative transition rate of BN-3 is greatly enhanced compared with BN-1 and BN-2, realizing a high fluorescence quantum yield of 92 %. This work provides a novel design concept of large acene BN-isosteres and reveals the importance of BN/CC isosterism on their luminescent properties.

Novel small molecule-based organic nanoparticles for second near-infrared photothermal tumor ablation

Second near-infrared (NIR-II,1000 ∼ 1700 nm) therapeutic window presents an increased tissue penetration and elevated maximal permissible exposure in the application of photothermal therapy (PTT). However, the lack of NIR-II photothermal conversion agents (PCAs) limit their further development. In this work, we rationally designed and successfully developed three novel indolium-like heptamethine cyanine dyes (NFs) by installing N,N-diethylamino on the terminal ends of a conjugated polyene backbone and replacing the middle chlorine atom with o-mercapto benzoic acid and p-mercapto benzoic acid. Notably, NF2 with stronger rotating group encapsulated in organic nanoparticles (NF2 NPs) exhibited high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE), which could come up to (61.3 %). Then we conducted serial experiments to further investigate PTT capability of NF2 NPs 4 T1 cell line and nude mice bearing 4 T1 tumor. As expected, the resulting NF2 NPs presented the excellent photothermal conversion ability and superb PTT effect both in vivo and in vitro. This study will inspire more work for future design and clinical applications of NIR-II therapeutic agents.

Multifunctional siRNA/ferrocene/cyclodextrin nanoparticles for enhanced chemodynamic cancer therapy

The therapeutic outcome of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is greatly hindered by the presence of oxidative damage repair proteins (MTH1) inside cancer cells. These oxidative damage repair proteins detoxify the action of radicals generated by Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. Hence, it is extremely important to develop a simple strategy for the downregulation of MTH1 protein inside cancer cells along with the delivery of metal ions into cancer cells. A one-pot host-guest supramolecular approach for the codelivery of MTH1 siRNA and metal ions into a cancer cell is reported. Our approach involves the fabrication of an inclusion complex between cationic β-cyclodextrin and a ferrocene prodrug, which spontaneously undergoes amphiphilicity-driven self-assembly to form spherical nanoparticles (NPs) having a positively charged surface. The cationic surface of the NPs was then explored for the loading of MTH1 siRNA through electrostatic interactions. Using HeLa cells as a representative example, efficient uptake of the NPs, delivery of MTH1 siRNA and the enhanced CDT of the nanoformulation are demonstrated. This work highlights the potential of the supramolecular approach as a simple yet efficient method for the delivery of siRNA across the cell membrane for enhanced chemodynamic therapy.

Photoactivation Inducing Multifunctional Coupling of Fluorophore for Efficient Tumor Therapy In Situ

Photoactivatable molecules, with high-precision spatialtemporal control, have largely promoted bioimaging and phototherapy applications of fluorescent dyes. Here, the first photoactivatable sensor (BI) is described that can be triggered by broad excitation light (405-660 nm), which further undergoes intersystem crossing and H-atom transfer processes to forming superoxide anion radicals (O2 -• ) and carbon radicals. Particularly, the photoinduced gain of carbon-centered radicals (BI•) allows for radical-radical coupling to afford the combined crosslink product (BI─BI), which would be oxidized in the presence of O2 -• to produce an extended conjugate system with near infrared emission (820 nm). Besides, the photochemically generated product (Cy─BI) possesses ultra-high photothermal conversion efficiency up to 90.9%, which optimized phototherapy potential. What's more, Western Blot assay reveals that both BI and the photoproduct Cy─BI can efficiently inhibit the expression of CHK1, and the irradiation of BI and Cy─BI further induces apoptosis and ultimately enhances the phototherapeutic effects. Thus, the combination of cell cycle block inducing apoptosis, photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy treatments significantly suppress solid tumor in vivo antitumor efficacy explorations. This is a novel finding in developing photoactivatable molecules, as well as the broad applicability of photoimaging and phototherapy in tumor-related areas.

Triple B←N Lewis Pair-Functionalized Triazatruxenes with Large Stokes Shifts

A novel class of multiple B←N Lewis pair-functionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with different BR2 groups (R = Cl or Et) directly attached at positions 1, 6, and 11 of triazatruxene was synthesized. The triazatruxene backbone of 4 displays a bowl shape, and its molecular skeleton shows a highly twisted propeller-like structure with C3 symmetry. The introduction of B←N Lewis pairs not only results in a large decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap but also lowers the LUMO to -3.00 eV. Both compounds show excellent stability with large Stokes shifts of ≤8234 cm-1 and solvatochromic emission in solvents of different polarities.

Impact of Truncation on Optoelectronic Properties of Azaborole Helicenes

Herein, we report configurationally stable singly-truncated (ST) and structurally flexible doubly-truncated (DT) helically chiral compounds derived from azabora[7]helicenes by a hypothetical removal of a single or two C=C double bonds. The singly-truncated constitutional isomers were synthesized from either benzoisoquinoline (BIQ) or phenantherene building blocks and the corresponding biaryls in excellent yields to give azabora[5]helicenes with a pendant phenyl ring at a sterically hindered position. These systems highlight the electronic impact of the nitrogen donor substitution position. The compounds with a disrupted BIQ moiety (STN) possess remarkable photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.53 in the solid state and a blue emission in solution with dissymmetry factors of up to ca. 3×10-3 . Upon cooling to 79 K all compounds exhibit phosphorescence with lifetimes of up to ca. 0.5 s. A methyl complex of azabora[7]helicene showing excellent configurational stability was used as a chiral inducer embedded in an emissive polymer (F8BT) to produce circularly polarized organic light emitting diodes with an electroluminescence dissymmetry factor gEL of up to 0.54.

Diagonal and Vertical B ← N Lewis Pair Functionalized Perylenes

Two novel multiple B ← N Lewis pair functionalized perylenes are reported. While OBN-Pery shows a centrosymmetric and planar architecture, PBN-Pery displays an axisymmetric and twist structure. B ← N functionalization in both of them results in a large decrease in the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. PBN-Pery in particular has a low LUMO energy level (-3.00 eV) and red emission at the NIR I region with high fluorescence quantum yield.

Effect of Chalcogenophenes on Chiroptical Activity of Twisted Tetracenes: Computational Analysis, Synthesis and Crystal Structure Thereof

The synthesis of multiply substituted acenes is still a relevant research problem, considering their applications and future potential. Here we present an elegant synthetic protocol to afford tetra-peri-substituted naphthalene and tetracene from their tetrahalo derivatives by a Pd(0)-catalyzed C-C cross-coupling method in a single step. The newly synthesized tetracenes were characterized by NMR, HRMS, UV-vis spectrophotometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). In addition, the first systematic computational study of the effect of chalcogenophenyl substitutions on the chiroptical properties of twistacenes was reported here. The gas phase computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) on a series of chalcogenophene-substituted tetracenes revealed that their chiroptical activity could be systematically increased via the atomistic tuning of peripheral substituents.

Photothermal Nanomaterials: A Powerful Light-to-Heat Converter

All forms of energy follow the law of conservation of energy, by which they can be neither created nor destroyed. Light-to-heat conversion as a traditional yet constantly evolving means of converting light into thermal energy has been of enduring appeal to researchers and the public. With the continuous development of advanced nanotechnologies, a variety of photothermal nanomaterials have been endowed with excellent light harvesting and photothermal conversion capabilities for exploring fascinating and prospective applications. Herein we review the latest progresses on photothermal nanomaterials, with a focus on their underlying mechanisms as powerful light-to-heat converters. We present an extensive catalogue of nanostructured photothermal materials, including metallic/semiconductor structures, carbon materials, organic polymers, and two-dimensional materials. The proper material selection and rational structural design for improving the photothermal performance are then discussed. We also provide a representative overview of the latest techniques for probing photothermally generated heat at the nanoscale. We finally review the recent significant developments of photothermal applications and give a brief outlook on the current challenges and future directions of photothermal nanomaterials.

Amides as modifiable directing groups in electrophilic borylation

Amide directed C-H borylation using ≥two equiv. of BBr3 forms borenium cations containing a R2N(R')C[double bond, length as m-dash]O→B(Ar)Br unit which has significant Lewis acidity at the carbonyl carbon. This enables reduction of the amide unit to an amine using hydrosilanes. This approach can be applied sequentially in a one-pot electrophilic borylation-reduction process, which for phenyl-acetylamides generates ortho borylated compounds that can be directly oxidised to the 2-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol. Other substrates amenable to the C-H borylation-reduction sequence include mono and diamino-arenes and carbazoles. This represents a simple method to make borylated molecules that would be convoluted to access otherwise (e.g. N-octyl-1-BPin-carbazole). Substituent variation is tolerated at boron as well as in the amide unit, with diarylborenium cations also amenable to reduction. This enables a double C-H borylation-reduction-hydrolysis sequence to access B,N-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including an example where both the boron and nitrogen centres contain functionalisable handles (N-H and B-OH). This method is therefore a useful addition to the metal-free borylation toolbox for accessing useful intermediates (ArylBPin) and novel B,N-PAHs.

Manipulating Host-Guest Charge Transfer of a Water-Soluble Double-Cavity Cyclophane for NIR-II Photothermal Therapy

Water-soluble small organic photothermal agents (PTAs) over NIR-II biowindow (1000-1350 nm) are highly desirable, but the rarity greatly limits their applications. Based on a water-soluble double-cavity cyclophane GBox-4⁴⁺ , we report a class of host-guest charge transfer (CT) complexes as structurally uniform PTAs for NIR-II photothermal therapy. As a result of its high electron-deficiency, GBox-4⁴⁺ can bind different electron-rich planar guests with a 1 : 2 host/guest stoichiometry to readily tune the CT absorption band that extends to the NIR-II region. When using a diaminofluorene guest substituted with an oligoethylene glycol chain, the host-guest system realized both good biocompatibility and enhanced photothermal conversion at 1064 nm, and was then exploited as a high-efficiency NIR-II PTA for cancer cell and bacterial ablation. This work broadens the potential applications of host-guest cyclophane systems and provides a new access to bio-friendly NIR-II photoabsorbers with well-defined structures.

Zigzag-Edged Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Benzo[m]tetraphene Precursors

A series of zigzag-edged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (Z1-Z3) were synthesized from 2,12-dibromo-7,14-diphenyl-benzo[m]tetraphene (9) as a versatile building block. Their structures were unambiguously confirmed by laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ¹ H NMR, Raman, and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies as well as scanning tunneling microscopy. The fingerprint vibrational modes were elucidated with theoretical support. The edge- and size-dependent optical properties were characterized by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Moreover, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy revealed distinct modulation of the photophysical properties upon π-extension from Z1 to Z2, the latter having a gulf edge.
