Achieving High-Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol via Functional Reformation of Titanium-Oxo Clusters

Extended MOF-74-Type Variant with an Azine Linkage: Efficient Direct Air Capture and One-Pot Synthesis

Direct air capture (DAC) shows considerable promise for the effective removal of CO2; however, materials applicable to DAC are lacking. Among metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents, diamine-Mg2(dobpdc) (dobpdc4- = 4,4-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate) effectively removes low-pressure CO2, but the synthesis of the organic ligand requires high temperature, high pressure, and a toxic solvent. Besides, it is necessary to isolate the ligand for utilization in the synthesis of the framework. In this study, we synthesized a new variant of extended MOF-74-type frameworks, M2(hob) (M = Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+; hob4- = 5,5'-(hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(methanylylidene))bis(2-oxidobenzoate)), constructed from an azine-bonded organic ligand obtained through a facile condensation reaction at room temperature. Functionalization of Mg2(hob) with N-methylethylenediamine, N-ethylethylenediamine, and N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine (mmen) enables strong interactions with low-pressure CO2, resulting in top-tier adsorption capacities of 2.60, 2.49, and 2.91 mmol g-1 at 400 ppm of CO2, respectively. Under humid conditions, the CO2 capacity was higher than under dry conditions due to the presence of water molecules that aid in the formation of bicarbonate species. A composite material combining mmen-Mg2(hob) and polyvinylidene fluoride, a hydrophobic polymer, retained its excellent adsorption performance even after 7 days of exposure to 40% relative humidity. In addition, the one-pot synthesis of Mg2(hob) from a mixture of the corresponding monomers is achieved without separate ligand synthesis steps; thus, this framework is suitable for facile large-scale production. This work underscores that the newly synthesized Mg2(hob) and its composites demonstrate significant potential for DAC applications.

Modulating crystal facets of photoanodes for photoelectrocatalytic scalable degradation of fluorinated pharmaceuticals in wastewater

Fluorinated pharmaceuticals pollution has become an ever-increasing environmental concern due to its negative impacts. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation system is a desirable approach to tackle the pollution problems. However, photogenerated charge separation and interfacial mass transfer are the main bottlenecks for improving the PEC degradation performance. Herein, we report a TiO2 photoanode with tuned (101)/(110) facets in situ grown on a Ti mesh substrate for PEC degradation of fluorinated pharmaceuticals. The exposure of (101) facets facilitates efficient photogenerated charge separation and the desorption of generated •OH radical. Besides, the three-dimensional (3D) architecture of photoanode promotes macroscopic mass transfer. This system performed complete defluorination of 5-fluorouracil and more than 75 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency. The apparent reaction rate constant of high (101) facet-exposed TiO2 grown on Ti mesh is up to 6.96 h-1, 6‒fold faster than that of photoanode with low (101) facet-exposed TiO2 grown on Ti foil. It is demonstrated that a large-sized PEC system of 1200 cm2 can degrade 100 L of synthetic fluorinated pharmaceutical wastewater with more than 80 % elimination efficiency. This work showcases the facet and substrate modulated strategy of fabricating high-performed photoanode for PEC wastewater purification.

Oxygen-Centered Organic Radicals-Involved Unified Heterogeneous Self-Fenton Process for Stable Mineralization of Micropollutants in Water

Removing organic micropollutants from water through photocatalysis is hindered by catalyst instability and substantial residuals from incomplete mineralization. Here, a novel water treatment paradigm, the unified heterogeneous self-Fenton process (UHSFP), which achieved an impressive 32% photon utilization efficiency at 470 nm, and a significant 94% mineralization of organic micropollutants-all without the continual addition of oxidants and iron ions is presented. In UHSFP, the active species differs fundamentally from traditional photocatalytic processes. One electron acceptor unit of photocatalyst acquires only one photogenerated electron to convert into oxygen-centered organic radical (OCOR), then spontaneously completing subsequent processes, including pollutant degradation, hydrogen peroxide generation, activation, and mineralization of organic micropollutants. By bolstering electron-transfer capabilities and diminishing catalyst affinity for oxygen in the photocatalytic process, the generation of superoxide radicals is effectively suppressed, preventing detrimental attacks on the catalyst. This study introduces an innovative and cost-effective strategy for the efficient and stable mineralization of organic micropollutants, eliminating the necessity for continuous chemical inputs, providing a new perspective on water treatment technologies.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanozyme-mediated portable paper-based analytical device for dichlorophen assay

The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanozyme-mediated paper-based analytical devices (PADs) have shown great potential in portable visual determination of phenolic compounds in the environment. However, most MOF nanozymes suffer from poor dispersibility and block-like structure, which often prompts deposition and results in diminished enzymatic activity, severely hindering their environmental applications. Here, we proposed colorimetric PADs for the visual detection of dichlorophen (Dcp) based on its significant inhibitory effect on the two-dimensional (2D) MOF nanozyme activity. Specifically, we synthesized a 2D Cu TCPP (Fe) (defined as 2D-CTF) MOF nanozyme exhibiting excellent dispersibility and remarkable peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity, which could catalyze the oxidation and subsequent color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine even under neutral conditions. Notably, the POD-like activity of 2D-CTF demonstrated a unique response to Dcp because of the occupation of Fe-N4 active sites on the 2D-CTF. This property enables the use of 2D-CTF as a highly efficient catalyst to develop colorimetric PADs for naked-eye and portable detection of Dcp. We believe that the proposed colorimetric PADs offer an efficient method for Dcp assay and open fresh avenues for the advancement of colorimetric sensors for analyzing of phenolic toxic substances in real samples.

Photoinitiated Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Redox Transformations of Titanium-Oxo Clusters

Titanium-oxo clusters can undergo photochemical reactions under UV light, resulting in the reduction of the titanium-oxo core and oxidation of surface ligands. This is an important step in photocatalytic processes in light-absorbing Ti/O-based clusters, metal-organic frameworks, and (nano)material surfaces; however, studying the direct outcome of this photochemical process is challenging due to the fragility of the immediate photoproducts. In this report, titanium-oxo clusters [TiO(OiPr)(L)]n (n = 4, L = O2PPh2, or n = 6, L = O2CCH2tBu) undergo a two-electron photoredox reaction in the single-crystal state via an irreversible single-crystal to single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation initiated by a UV laser. The process is monitored by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealing the photoreduction of the cluster with coproduction of an (oxidized) acetone ligand, which is retained in the structure as a ligand to Ti(3+). The results demonstrate that photochemistry of inorganic molecules can be studied in the single crystal phase, allowing characterization of photoproducts which are unstable in the solution phase.

Recent advances of piezo-catalysis and photocatalysis for efficient environmental remediation

The efficient degradation of organic pollutants in diverse environmental matrices can be achieved through the synergistic application of piezo-catalysis and photocatalysis. The focus of this study is on understanding the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern the collaborative action of piezoelectric and photocatalytic materials. Piezoelectric nanomaterials, under mechanical stress, generate piezo-potential, which, when coupled with photocatalysts, enhances the generation and separation of charge carriers. The resulting cascade of redox reactions promotes the degradation of a wide spectrum of organic pollutants. The comprehensive investigation involves a variety of experimental techniques, including advanced spectroscopy and microscopy, to elucidate the intricate interplay between mechanical and photoinduced processes. The influence of key parameters, such as material composition, morphology, and external stimuli on the catalytic performance, is systematically explored. This study contributes to the increasing knowledge of environmental remediation and lays the foundation for the development of advanced technologies using piezo and photocatalysis for sustainable pollutant removal.

Enhanced efficiency of AgAlO2/g-C3N4 binary composite to degrade organic pollutants for environmental remediation under visible light irradiation

This study explores the utilization of semiconductor-based photocatalysts for environmental remediation through photocatalytic degradation, harnessing solar energy for effective treatment. The primary focus is on the application of photocatalytic technology for the degradation of 2-chlorophenol and methylene blue, critical pollutants requiring remediation. The research involves the synthesis of binary AgAlO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites through an exchange ion method, subsequent calcination, and sonication. This process enhances the transfer of photogenerated electrons from AgAlO2 to g-C3N4, resulting in a significantly increased reductive electron charge on the surface of g-C3N4. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized composites is comprehensively examined in the degradation of 2-chlorophenol and methylene blue through detailed crystallographic, electron-microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy, electrochemical, and spectroscopic characterizations. Among the various composites, AgAlO2/20% g-C3N4 emerges as the most active photocatalyst, achieving an impressive 98% degradation of methylene blue and 97% degradation of 2-chlorophenol under visible light. Notably, AgAlO2/20% g-C3N4 surpasses bare AgAlO2 and bare g-C3N4, exhibiting 1.66 times greater methylene blue degradation and constant rate (k) values of 20.17 × 10-3 min-1, 4.18 × 10-3 min-1 and 3.48 × 10-3 min-1, respectively. The heightened photocatalytic activity is attributed to the diminished recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Scavenging evaluations confirm that O2•- and h+ are the primary photoactive species steering methylene blue photodegradation over AgAlO2/g-C3N4 in the visible region. These findings present new possibilities for the development of efficient binary photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Ferrocene-functionalized zirconium-oxo clusters for achieving high-performance thermocatalytic redox reactions

The Zr(IV) ions are easily hydrolyzed to form oxides, which severely limits the discovery of new structures and applications of Zr-based compounds. In this work, three ferrocene (Fc)-functionalized Zr-oxo clusters (ZrOCs), Zr9Fc6, Zr10Fc6 and Zr12Fc8 were synthesized through inhibiting the hydrolysis of Zr(IV) ions, which show increased nuclearity and regular structural variation. More importantly, these Fc-functionalized ZrOCs were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) and phenol oxidation reactions for the first time, and displayed outstanding catalytic activity. In particular, Zr12Fc8 with the largest number of Zr active sites and Fc groups can achieve > 95% yield for LA-to-γ-valerolactone within 4 h (130 °C) and > 98% yield for 2,3,6-trimethylphenol-to-2,3,5-trimethyl-p-benzoquinone within 30 min (80 °C), showing the best catalytic performance. Catalytic characterization combined with theory calculations reveal that in the Fc-functionalized ZrOCs, the Zr active sites could serve as substrate adsorption sites, while the Fc groups could act as hydrogen transfer reagent or Fenton reagent, and thus achieve effectively intramolecular metal-ligand synergistic catalysis. This work develops functionalized ZrOCs as catalysts for thermal-triggered redox reactions.

Phenanthroline-Mediated Photoelectrical Enhancement in Calix[4]arene-Functionalized Titanium-Oxo Clusters

Incorporating two organic ligands with different functionalities into a titanium-oxo cluster entity simultaneously can endow the material with their respective properties and provide synergistic performance enhancement, which is of great significance for enriching the structure and properties of titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs). However, the synthesis of such TOCs is highly challenging. In this work, we successfully synthesized a TBC4A-functionalized TOC, [Ti2(TBC4A)2(MeO)2] (Ti2; MeOH = methanol, TBC4A = tert-butylcalix[4]arene). By adjusting the solvent system, we successfully introduced 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) and prepared TBC4A and Phen co-protected [Ti2(TBC4A)2(Phen)2] (Ti2-Phen). Moreover, when Phen was replaced with bulky 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen), [Ti2(TBC4A)2(Bphen)2] (Ti2-Bphen), which is isostructural with Ti2-Phen, was obtained, demonstrating the generality of the synthetic method. Remarkably, Ti2-Phen demonstrates good stability and stronger light absorption, as well as superior photoelectric performance compared to Ti2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that there exists ligand-to-core charge transfer (LCCT) in Ti2, while an unusual ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) is present in Ti2-Phen, accompanied by partial LCCT. Therefore, the superior light absorption and photoelectric properties of Ti2-Phen are attributed to the existence of the unusual LLCT phenomenon. This study not only deeply explores the influence of Phen on the performance of the material but also provides a reference for the preparation of materials with excellent photoelectric performance.

Emerging single-atom catalysts in the detection and purification of contaminated gases

Single atom catalysts (SACs) show exceptional molecular adsorption and electron transfer capabilities owing to their remarkable atomic efficiency and tunable electronic structure, thereby providing promising solutions for diverse important processes including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, etc. Consequently, SACs hold great potential in the detection and degradation of pollutants present in contaminated gases. Over the past few years, SACs have made remarkable achievements in the field of contaminated gas detection and purification. In this review, we first provide a concise introduction to the significance and urgency of gas detection and pollutant purification, followed by a comprehensive overview of the structural feature identification methods for SACs. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the three key properties of SACs for detecting contaminated gases and discuss the research progress made in utilizing SACs to purify polluted gases. Finally, we analyze the enhancement mechanism and advantages of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification, and propose strategies to address challenges and expedite the development of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification.

Topotactic Conversion of Titanium-Oxo Clusters to a Stable TOC-Based Metal-Organic Framework with the Selective Adsorption of Cationic Dyes

Titanium-oxo cluster (TOC)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received considerable attention in recent years due to their ability to expand the application of TOCs to fields that require highly stable frameworks. Herein, a new cyclic TOC formulated as [Ti6O6(OiPr)8(TTFTC)(phen)2]2 (1, where TTFTC = tetrathiafulvalene tetracarboxylate and phen = phenanthroline) was crystallographically characterized. TOC 1 takes a rectangular ring structure with two phen-modified Ti6 clusters as the width and two TTFTC ligands as the length. An intracluster ligand-to-ligand (TTF-to-phen) charge transfer in 1 was found for TOCs for the first time. Compound 1 undergoes topotactic conversion to generate stable TOC-MOF P1, in which the rectangular framework in 1 formed by a TOC core and ligands is retained, as verified by comprehensive characterization. P1 shows an efficient and rapid selective adsorption capacity for cationic dyes. The experimental adsorption capacity (qex) of P1 reaches a value of up to 789.2 mg/g at 298 K for the crystal violet dye, which is the highest among those of various adsorbents. The calculated models are first used to reveal the structure-property relationship of the cyclic host to different guest dyes. The results further confirmed the host MOF structure of P1.

Accurate assembly of thiophene-bridged titanium-oxo clusters with photocatalytic amine oxidation activity

Designing and synthesizing well-defined crystalline catalysts for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines to imines remains a great challenge. In this work, a crystalline dumbbell-shaped titanium oxo cluster, [Ti10O6(Thdc)(Dmg)2(iPrO)22] (Ti10, Thdc = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, Dmg = dimethylglyoxime, iPrOH = isopropanol), was constructed through a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy and treated as a catalyst for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines. In this structure, Thdc serves as the horizontal bar, while the {Ti5Dmg} layers on each side act as the weight plates. The molecular structure, light absorption, and photoelectrochemical properties of Ti10 were systematically investigated. Remarkably, the inclusion of the Thdc ligand, with the assistance of the Dmg ligand, broadens the light absorption spectrum of Ti10, extending it into the visible range. Furthermore, the effective enhancement of charge transfer within the Ti10 was achieved with the successful incorporation of the Thdc ligand, as opposed to PTC-211, where terephthalic acid replaces the Thdc ligand, while maintaining consistency in other aspects of Ti10. Building on this foundation, Ti10 was employed as a heterogeneous molecular photocatalyst for the catalytic oxidative coupling reaction of benzylamine (BA), demonstrating very high conversion activity and selectivity. Our study illustrates that the inclusion of ligands derived from Thdc enhances the efficiency of charge transfer in functionalized photocatalysts, significantly influencing the performance of photocatalytic organic conversion.

Enhancing the photocatalytic performance of a rutile unit featuring a titanium-oxide cluster by Pb2+ doping

Titanium-oxide clusters (TOCs) are well-defined molecular models for TiO2 materials and provide the opportunity to study the structure-activity relationships of TiO2. Here, we report a new Pb-doped TOC, Ti12Pb2, which resembles a two-layer decker of the {TiTi6} structural units of rutile TiO2 with two Ti4+ ions replaced by two Pb2+ ions. Its electronic structure, photoresponse, and photocatalytic performances were investigated and compared with those of the Ti14 cluster, which is isostructural to Ti12Pb2. Our results indicate that Pb2+ does not affect the electronic structure, but it greatly enhances the photocatalytic activity by improving the charge-separation and interfacial charge-transfer properties of the TOC. The successful synthesis of Ti12Pb2 highlights the roles of closed-shell heterometal ions in the construction of new TOCs. Our mechanism may be an inspiration for understanding the structure-activity relationships of closed-shell heterometal-doped TiO2.

All-catecholate-stabilized black titanium-oxo clusters for efficient photothermal conversion

The controlled synthesis of titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) completely stabilized by organic dye ligands with high stability and superior light absorption remains a significant challenge. In this study, we report the syntheses of three atomically precise catechol (Cat)-functionalized TOCs, [Ti2(Cat)2(OEgO)2(OEgOH)2] (Ti2), [Ti8O5(Cat)9(iPrO)4(iPrOH)2] (Ti8), and [Ti16O8(OH)8(Cat)20]·H2O·PhMe (Ti16), using a solvent-induced strategy (HOEgOH = ethylene glycol; iPrOH = isopropanol; PhMe = toluene). Interestingly, the TiO core of Ti16 is almost entirely enveloped by catechol ligands, making it the first all-catechol-protected high-nuclearity TOC. In contrast, Ti2 and Ti8 have four weakly coordinated ethylene glycol ligands and six weakly coordinated iPrOH ligands, respectively, in addition to the catechol ligands. Ti16 is visually evident in its distinctively black appearance, which belongs to black TOCs (B-TOCs) and exhibits an ultralow optical band gap. Furthermore, Ti16 displays exceptional stability in various media/environments, including exposure to air, solvents, and both acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions due to its comprehensive protection by catechol ligands and rich intra-cluster supramolecular interactions. Ti16 has superior photoelectric response qualities and photothermal conversion capabilities compared to Ti2 and Ti8 due to its ultralow optical band gap and remarkable stability. This discovery not only represents a huge step forward in the creation of all-catecholate-protected B-TOCs with ultralow optical band gaps and outstanding stability, but it also gives key valuable mechanistic insights into their photothermal/electric applications.

Enhanced oxidation of organic pollutants by regulating the interior reaction region of reactive electrochemical membranes

Reactive electrochemical membrane (REM) emerges as an attractive strategy for the elimination of refractory organic pollutants that exist in wastewater. However, the limited reaction sites in traditional REMs greatly hinder its practical application. Herein, a feed-through coating methodology was developed to realize the uniform loading of SnO2-Sb catalysts on the interior surface of a REM. The uniformly coated REM (Unif-REM) exhibited 2.4 times higher reaction kinetics (0.29 min-1) than that of surface coated REM (Surf-REM) for the degradation of 2 mM 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), rendering an energy consumption as low as 0.016 kWh gTOC-1. The fast degradation of various emerging contaminants, e.g., sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ofloxacin (OFLX), and tetracycline (TC), also confirms its superior oxidation capability. Besides, the Unif-REM exhibited good performance in generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and a relatively long service lifetime. The simulation of spatial current distribution demonstrates that the interior reaction region in the Unif-REM channels can be drastically extended, thereby maximizing the surface coupling of mass diffusion and electron transfer. This study offers an in-depth look at the spatially confined reactions in REM and provides a reference for the design of electrochemical systems with economically efficient water purification.

Aggregate assembly of ferrocene functionalized indium-oxo clusters

In this study, we synthesized multi-nuclear indium oxide clusters (InOCs) using 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (H2FcDCA) as the chelating and surface protection ligand. The obtained clusters include the cubane-type heptanuclear InOCs ([In7]) and the sandwich-type thirteen-nuclear InOCs ([In13]). Notably, [In13] represents the highest nuclear number reported within the InOC family. In addition, the presence of labile coordination sites in these clusters allowed for structural modification and self-assembly. A series of [In7] clusters with adjustable band gaps have been obtained and the self-assembly of [In7] clusters resulted in the formation of an Fe-doped dimer, [Fe2In12], and an imidazole-bridged tetramer, [In28]. Similarly, in the case of [In13] clusters, the coordinated water molecules could be replaced by imidazole, methylimidazole, and even a bridged carboxylic acid, allowing the construction of one-dimensional extended structures. Additionally, part of the H2FcDCA could be substituted by pyrazole. This flexibility in replacing solvent molecules offered diverse possibilities for tailoring the properties and structures of the InOCs to suit specific applications.

Recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for water contaminants treatment: strategies to improve photocatalytic performance

Toxic organic pollutants in wastewater have seriously damaged human health and ecosystems. Photocatalytic degradation is a potential and efficient tactic for wastewater treatment. Among the entire carbon family, biochar has been developed for the adsorption of pollutants due to its large specific surface area, porous skeleton structure, and abundant surface functional groups. Hence, combining adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition, TiO2-biochar photocatalysts have received considerable attention and have been extensively studied. Owing to biochar's adsorption, more active sites and strong interactions between contaminants and photocatalysts can be achieved. The synergistic effect of biochar and TiO2 nanomaterials substantially improves the photocatalytic capacity for pollutant degradation. TiO2-biochar composites have numerous attractive properties and advantages, culminating in infinite applications. This review discusses the characteristics and preparation techniques of biochar, presents in situ and ex situ synthesis approaches of TiO2-biochar nanocomposites, explains the benefits of TiO2-biochar-based compounds for photocatalytic degradation, and emphasizes the strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts. Finally, the main difficulties and future advancements of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysis are highlighted. The review gives an exhaustive overview of recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for organic contaminants removal and is expected to encourage the development of robust TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for sewage remediation and other environmentally friendly uses.

Design and oxidative desulfurization of Ag/Ti heterometallic clusters based on Hard-Soft Acid-Base principle

Hard-Soft Acid-Base (HSAB) principle plays an important guiding role in the design and synthesis of novel clusters and coordination compounds, in which "soft acids prefer to react with soft bases, while hard acids have an affinity for hard bases". Based on HSAB principle, four Ag/Ti heterometallic clusters, including Ag2Ti10, Ag2Ti11 with "Ti-encapsulated Ag" configurations, and two "Ag-encapsulated Ti" structures Ag2Ti2 and Ag2Ti12, were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. In addition, Ag2Ti12 exhibited an efficient and stable catalytic activity for sulfide oxidation. This work provides not only a new structural model for the modulation of the catalytic oxidative desulfurization properties of Ag/Ti heterometallic clusters but also a new insight of the utilization of phosphine-containing ligands to regulate the structure of Ag/Ti heterometallic clusters.

Selective and Rapid Detection of 4-Nitrophenol in River and Treated Industrial Wastewater by a Luminescent Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework Sensor

Phenolic organic compounds are widely used industrial chemicals that exist extensively in the environment and have a significant impact on human health. 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a typical phenolic organic compound found in aqueous environments. Efficient detection of 4-NP in wastewater is highly challenging due to the complexity of testing environmental samples. Herein, a luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework (MOF) sensor based on the Eu3+ ion {[Eu(HL)(L)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (EuMOF; H2L = 5-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid) was successfully synthesized for efficient 4-NP detection in wastewater. Fluorescence sensing experiments revealed that 4-NP could greatly quench the EuMOF fluorescence. Subsequently, EuMOF was applied to 4-NP detection in distilled water, tap water, river water, and treated industrial wastewater, exhibiting high sensitivity, a fast response within 30 s, high selectivity, excellent reusability, and a low detection limit. Finally, the fluorescence quenching mechanism was explored and attributed to competitive absorption of irradiated light between 4-NP and the ligand.

A ferrocene-modified stable metal-organic framework for efficient CO2 photoreduction reaction

A series of ferrocene-grafted/loaded stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), based on the classical NH2-MIL-125(Ti), were prepared to improve the light absorption and photogenerated charge migration of photocatalysts, which can achieve enhanced CO2-to-HCOOH reduction performance. This work highlights the obvious advantage of the modifiability of the MOF structure in optimizing the performance of the photocatalytic CO2RR.

Synergistic Metal-Nonmetal Active Sites in a Metal-Organic Cage for Efficient Photocatalytic Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide in Pure Water

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is a potential clean method, but the long distance between the oxidation and reduction sites in photocatalysts hinders the rapid transfer of photogenerated charges, limiting the improvement of its performance. Here, a metal-organic cage photocatalyst, Co14 (L-CH3 )24 , is constructed by directly coordinating metal sites (Co sites) used for the O2 reduction reaction (ORR) with non-metallic sites (imidazole sites of ligands) used for the H2 O oxidation reaction (WOR), which shortens the transport path of photogenerated electrons and holes, and improves the transport efficiency of charges and activity of the photocatalyst. Therefore, it can be used as an efficient photocatalyst with a rate of as high as 146.6 μmol g-1  h-1 for H2 O2 production under O2 -saturated pure water without sacrificial agents. Significantly, the combination of photocatalytic experiments and theoretical calculations proves that the functionalized modification of ligands is more conducive to adsorbing key intermediates (*OH for WOR and *HOOH for ORR), resulting in better performance. This work proposed a new catalytic strategy for the first time; i.e., to build a synergistic metal-nonmetal active site in the crystalline catalyst and use the host-guest chemistry inherent in the metal-organic cage (MOC)to increase the contact between the substrate and the catalytically active site, and finally achieve efficient photocatalytic H2 O2 synthesis.

Ligand-dependent structural diversity and optimizable CO2 chemical fixation activities of Cu-doped polyoxo-titanium clusters

Heterometallic oxo clusters have been attracting intensive interest due to their unique properties originating from the synergistic interactions between different components. Herein, we report the construction and catalytic applications of a family of copper-doped polyoxo-titanium clusters (Cu-PTCs) coordinated with different acetate derivative ligands. The solvothermal reactions of metal salts and trimethylacetic acid or 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid in ethanol produced Ti6Cu3(μ3-O)4(μ2-O)(OEt)16(L1)4 (L1 = trimethyl acetate, PTC-367) and H2Ti8Cu2Br2(μ4-O)2(μ2-O)4(OEt)20(L2)2 (L2 = 1,2-phenylenediacetate, PTC-368), respectively. When smaller acetic acid was introduced as a stabilizing ligand, higher nuclei H2Ti16Cu3(μ4-O)5(μ3-O)15(μ2-O)3(OiPr)18(Ac)8 (Ac = acetate, PTC-369) and H3Ti29Cu3(μ4-O)6(μ3-O)30(μ2-O)8(OiPr)17(Ac)20 (PTC-370) were prepared. The number of metal ions exposed on the surface of the four clusters changes due to variations in the steric hindrance of functionalizing ligands, and theoretically, so does their catalytic activity as Lewis acids. In light of this, we conducted a carbon dioxide cycloaddition reaction in an atmospheric environment and the four obtained compounds displayed increasing catalytic activities from PTC-367 to PTC-370. These results provide a feasible synthetic method for modulating the structures of Cu-doped titanium oxide materials and improving their catalytic activities.
