Highly Connected Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework with Flu Topology for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Controlling the Degree of Interpenetration in Chiral Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks via Steric Tuning

Network interpenetration plays a crucial role in functionalizing porous framework materials. However, controlling the degree of interpenetration in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to influence their pore sizes, shapes, and functionalities still remains a significant challenge. Here, we demonstrate a steric tuning strategy to control the degree of COF interpenetration and modulate their physicochemical properties. By imine condensations of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol-derived tetraaldehydes bearing different alkyl substituents with the monomer tetra(p-aminophenyl)-methane, we synthesized and characterized a family of two-component and three-component chiral COFs with different interpenetrated dia networks. The alkyl groups are periodically appended on the pore walls, and their types/contents that can be synthetically tuned control the interpenetration degree of COFs by minimizing repulsive interactions between the alkyl groups. Specifically, the COF with -OH groups adopts an interpenetrated dia-c5 topology, those with -OMe/-OEt groups take an interpenetrated dia-c4 topology, whereas those with the bulky -OnPr/-OnBu groups exhibit a noninterpenetrated dia-c1 topology. The multivariate COFs with both -OH and -OnBu groups display either a noninterpenetrated or dia-c5 topology, depending on the proportion of -OnBu groups. The extent of interpenetration in COFs significantly affects their porosity, thermal stability, and chemical stability, resulting in varying selective performances in the adsorption and separation of dyes and asymmetric catalysis. This work highlights the potential of using steric hindrance to tune and control interpenetration, porosity, stability, and functionalities of COFs materials, broadening the range of their applications.

Simple Framework for Simultaneous Analysis of Both Electrodes in Stoichiometric Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

A battery is composed of two electrodes that depend on and interact with each other. However, galvanostatic charging-discharging measurement, the most widely used method for battery evaluation, cannot simultaneously reflect performance metrics [capacity, Coulombic efficiency (CE), and cycling stability] of both electrodes because the result is generally governed by the lower-capacity electrode of the cell, namely the limiting reagent of the battery reaction. In studying stoichiometric Li-S cells operating under application-relevant high-mass-loading and lean-electrolyte conditions, we take advantage of the two-stage discharging behavior of sulfur to construct a simple framework that allows us to analyze both electrodes simultaneously. The cell capacity and its decay are anode performance descriptors, whereas the first plateau capacity and cell CE are cathode performance descriptors. Our analysis within this frame identifies Li stripping/plating and polysulfide shuttling to be the limiting factors for the cycling performance of the stoichiometric Li-S cell. Using our newly developed framework, we examine various previously reported strategies to mitigate these bottleneck problems and find modifying the separator with a reduced graphene oxide layer to be an effective means, which improves the capacity retention rate of the cell to 99.7% per cycle.

In-situ texturing hollow carbon host anchored with Fe single atoms accelerating solid-phase redox for Li-Se batteries

Se-based cathodes have caught tremendous attention owing to their comparable volumetric capacity and better electronic conductivity to S cathodes. However, its low utilization ratio and sluggish redox kinetics due to the high reaction barrier of solid-phase transformation from Se to Li2Se limit its practical application. Herein, an in-situ texturing hollow carbon host by gas-solid interface reaction anchored with Fe single-atomic catalyst is designed and prepared for advanced Li-Se batteries. This Se host presents high pore volume of 1.49 cm3 g-1, Fe single atom content of 1.53 wt%, and its specific structure protects single-atomic catalyst from the destructive reaction environment, thus balancing catalytic activity and durability. After Se loading by reduction of H2SeO3, this homogenous Se-based cathode delivers a superior rate capacity of 431.3 mA h g-1 at 4C, and great discharge capacity of 301.8 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 10C, with high Li-ion diffusion coefficient and capacitance-contributed ratio. The distribution of relaxation times analysis verifies solid-phase transformation mechanism of this cathode and density functional theory calculations confirm the adsorption and bidirectionally catalysis effect of Fe single-atomic catalyst. This work provides a new strategy to prepare high-efficient Se cathode associated with non-noble metal single atoms for high-performance Li-Se batteries.

Stepwise Protonation of Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis

Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs), recognized for their tailorable structures and accessible active sites, offer a promising platform for developing advanced photocatalysts. However, the difficulty in the synthesis and functionalization of 3D COFs hinders their further development. In this study, we present a series of 3D-bcu-COFs with 8 connected porphyrin units linked by linear linkers through imine bonds as a versatile platform for photocatalyst design. The photoresponse of 3D-bcu-COFs was initially modulated by functionalizing linear linkers with benzo-thiadiazole or benzo-selenadiazole groups. Furthermore, taking advantage of the well-exposed porphyrin and imine sites in 3D-bcu-COFs, their photocatalytic activity was optimized by stepwise protonation of imine bonds and porphyrin centers. The dual protonated COF with benzo-selenadiazole groups exhibited enhanced charge separation, leading to an increased photocatalytic H2O2 production under visible light. This enhancement demonstrates the combined benefits of linker functionalization and stepwise protonation on photocatalytic efficiency.

Constructing 2D Phthalocyanine Covalent Organic Framework with Enhanced Stability and Conductivity via Interlayer Hydrogen Bonding as Electrocatalyst for CO2 Reduction

Fabricating COFs-based electrocatalysts with high stability and conductivity still remains a great challenge. Herein, 2D polyimide-linked phthalocyanine COF (denoted as NiPc-OH-COF) is constructed via solvothermal reaction between tetraanhydrides of 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyaninato nickel(II) and 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenediol (DB) with other two analogous 2D COFs (denoted as NiPc-OMe-COF and NiPc-H-COF) synthesized for reference. In comparison with NiPc-OMe-COF and NiPc-H-COF, NiPc-OH-COF exhibits enhanced stability, particularly in strong NaOH solvent and high conductivity of 1.5 × 10-3 S m-1 due to the incorporation of additional strong interlayer hydrogen bonding interaction between the O-H of DB and the hydroxy "O" atom of DB in adjacent layers. This in turn endows the NiPc-OH-COF electrode with ultrahigh CO2-to-CO faradaic efficiency (almost 100%) in a wide potential range from -0.7 to -1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), a large partial CO current density of -39.2 mA cm-2 at -1.1 V versus RHE, and high turnover number as well as turnover frequency, amounting to 45 000 and 0.76 S-1 at -0.80 V versus RHE during 12 h lasting measurement.

Identification of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with topology and their application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Covalent organic frameworks have attracted considerable attention in recent years as a distinct class of crystalline porous organic materials. Their functional properties are inherently linked to their structural characteristics. Although hundreds of COFs have been reported so far, the types of their topologic structure are still limited. In this article, we report the identification of mcm topology for three porphyrin-based two-dimensional COFs, which are constructed from [4 + 4] imine condensation reactions. The mcm net is generated by pentagonal tiling, which has not been identified for COFs before. The structure of the COFs is elucidated by a variety of experimental characterization and structural simulations, by which their reticular frameworks exclusively composed of pentagonal pores have been confirmed. Moreover, the COFs exhibit high performance in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water, with the best one up to 10.0 mmol g-1 h-1 after depositing 0.76 wt% Pt as a co-catalyst. This study identifies mcm topology for COFs for the first time and highlights the potential of these COFs as promising photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production from water.

Unprecedented POSS-Linked 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks with 2-Fold Interpenetrated scu or sqc Topology Regulated by Porphyrin Center for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The synthesis and characterization of porphyrin center regulated three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with 2-fold interpenetrated scu or sqc topology have been investigated. These COFs exhibit unique structural features and properties, making them promising candidates for photocatalytic applications in CO2 reduction and artemisinin synthesis. The porphyrin center serves as an anchor for metal ions, allowing precise control over structures and functions of the frameworks. Furthermore, the metal coordination within the framework imparts desirable catalytic properties, enabling their potential use in photocatalytic reactions. Overall, these porphyrin center regulated metal-controlled COFs offer exciting opportunities for the development of advanced materials with tailored functionalities.

Covalent organic frameworks and their composites for rechargeable batteries

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), characterized by well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, good stability, high precision, and flexible design, are a promising material for batteries and have received extensive attention from researchers in recent years. Compared with inorganic materials, COFs can construct elastic frameworks with better structural stability, and their chemical compositions and structures can be precisely adjusted and functionalized at the molecular level, providing an open pathway for the convenient transfer of ions. In this review, the energy storage mechanism and unique superiority of COFs and COF composites as electrodes, separators and electrolytes for rechargeable batteries are discussed in detail. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between the establishment of COF structures and their electrochemical performance in different batteries. Finally, this review summarizes the challenges and prospects of COFs and COF composites in battery equipment.

Asymmetrical Interactions between Ni Single Atomic Sites and Ni Clusters in a 3D Porous Organic Framework for Enhanced CO2 Photoreduction

3D porous organic frameworks, which possess the advantages of high surface area and abundant exposed active sites, are considered ideal platforms to accommodate single atoms (SAs) and metal nanoclusters (NCs) in high-performance catalysts; however, very little research has been conducted in this field. In the present work, a 3D porous organic framework containing Ni1 SAs and Nin NCs is prepared through the metal-assisted one-pot polycondensation of tetraaldehyde and hexaaminotriptycene. The single metal sites and metal clusters confined in the 3D space created a favorable micro-environment that facilitated the activation of chemically inert CO2 molecules, thus promoting the overall photoconversion efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction. The 3D-NiSAs/NiNCs-POPs, as a CO2 photoreduction catalyst, demonstrated an exceptional CO production rate of 6.24 mmol g-1 h-1, high selectivity of 98%, and excellent stability. The theoretical calculations uncovered that asymmetrical interaction between Ni1 SAs and Nin NCs not only favored the bending of CO2 molecules and reducing the CO2 reduction energy, but also regulated the electronic structure of the catalyst leading to the optimal binding strength of intermediates.

3D Crown Ether Covalent Organic Framework as Interphase Layer toward High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

The practical application of lithium (Li) metal batteries is inhibited by accumulative Li dendrites and continuous active Li consumption during cycling, which results in a low Coulombic efficiency and short lifetime. Constructing artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer in Li anode, such as 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs), is an effective strategy to restrain the formation of Li dendrites and improve cycling performance. However, the exploration of 3D COFs as protecting layers is rarely reported, because of the preconception that the interconnect pores in 3D COFs eventually cause Li dendrites in disordered direction. 3D crown ether-based COF with ffc topology as interphase layer, in which the crown ether units are arranged in parallel and vertical orientation along the electrode, is demonstrated. The strong coupling effect between the crown ether and Li+ accelerates Li+ diffusion kinetics and enables homogeneous Li+ flux, resulting in a high Li+ transference number of 0.85 and smooth Li deposition in 3D direction. Li/COF-Cu cells display a lower Li-nucleation overpotential (17.4 mV) and high average Coulombic efficiency of ≈98.6% during 340 cycles with COF incorporation. This work gives a new insight into designing COFs for energy storage systems.

Topological Analysis and Structural Determination of 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks

3D covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) constitute a new type of crystalline materials that consist of a range of porous structures with numerous applications in the fields of adsorption, separation, and catalysis. However, because of the complexity of the three-periodic net structure, it is desirable to develop a thorough structural comprehension, along with a means to precisely determine the actual structure. Indeed, such advancements would considerably contribute to the rational design and application of 3D COFs. In this review, the reported topologies of 3D COFs are introduced and categorized according to the configurations of their building blocks, and a comprehensive overview of diffraction-based structural determination methods is provided. The current challenges and future prospects for these materials will also be discussed.

Rechargeable Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Key Materials to Mechanisms

Rechargeable metal-sulfur batteries are considered promising candidates for energy storage due to their high energy density along with high natural abundance and low cost of raw materials. However, they could not yet be practically implemented due to several key challenges: (i) poor conductivity of sulfur and the discharge product metal sulfide, causing sluggish redox kinetics, (ii) polysulfide shuttling, and (iii) parasitic side reactions between the electrolyte and the metal anode. To overcome these obstacles, numerous strategies have been explored, including modifications to the cathode, anode, electrolyte, and binder. In this review, the fundamental principles and challenges of metal-sulfur batteries are first discussed. Second, the latest research on metal-sulfur batteries is presented and discussed, covering their material design, synthesis methods, and electrochemical performances. Third, emerging advanced characterization techniques that reveal the working mechanisms of metal-sulfur batteries are highlighted. Finally, the possible future research directions for the practical applications of metal-sulfur batteries are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to provide experimental strategies and theoretical guidance for designing and understanding the intricacies of metal-sulfur batteries; thus, it can illuminate promising pathways for progressing high-energy-density metal-sulfur battery systems.

Boosting lithium storage in covalent triazine framework for symmetric all-organic lithium-ion batteries by regulating the degree of spatial distortion

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with tunable structure, fine molecular design and low cost have been regarded as a class of ideal electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the tightly layered structure possessed by the CTFs leads to partial hiding of the redox active site, resulting in their unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, two CTFs (BDMI-CTF and TCNQ-CTF) with higher degree of structural distortion, more active sites exposed, and large lattice pores were prepared by dynamic trimerization reaction of cyano. As a result, BDMI-CTF as a cathode material for LIBs exhibits high initial capacity of 186.5 mAh/g at 50 mA g-1 and superior cycling stability without capacity loss after 2000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1 compared with TCNQ-CTF counterparts. Furthermore, based on their bipolar functionality, BDMI-CTF can be used as both cathode and anode materials for symmetric all-organic batteries (SAOBs), and this work will open a new window for the rational design of high performance CTF-based LIBs.

In Situ Grown Coordination-Supramolecular Layer Holding 3D Charged Channels for Highly Reversible Zn Anodes

Dynamic reversible noncovalent interactions make supramolecular framework (SF) structures flexible and designable. A three-dimensional (3D) growth of such frameworks is beneficial to improve the structure stability while maintaining unique properties. Here, through the ionic interaction of the polyoxometalate cluster, coordination of zinc ions with cationic terpyridine, and hydrogen bonding of grafted carboxyl groups, the construction of a 3D SF at a well-crystallized state is realized. The framework can grow in situ on the Zn surface, further extending laterally into a full covering without defects. Relying on the dissolution and the postcoordination effects, the 3D SF layer is used as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase to improve the Zn-anode performance. The uniformly distributed clusters within nanosized pores create a negatively charged nanochannel, accelerating zinc ion transfer and homogenizing zinc deposition. The 3D SF/Zn symmetric cells demonstrate high stability for over 3000 h at a current density of 5 mA cm-2.

12 Connecting Sites Linked Three-dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with Intrinsic Non-interpenetrated shp Topology for Photocatalytic H2O2 Synthesis

Developing high connectivity (>8) three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) towards new topologies and functions remains a great challenge owing to the difficulty in getting high connectivity organic building blocks. This however represents the most important step towards promoting the diversity of COFs due to the still limited dynamic covalent bonds available for constructing COFs at this stage. Herein, highly connected phthalocyanine-based (Pc-based) 3D COFs MPc-THHI-COFs (M=H2, Ni) were afforded from the reaction between 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyanine M(TAPc) (M=H2, Ni) and 5,5',5'',5''',5'''',5'''''-(triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexayl)hexa(isophthalohydrazide) (THHI) with 12 connecting sites. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis together with theoretical simulations and transmission electron microscopy reveals their crystalline nature with an unprecedented non-interpenetrated shp topology. Experimental and theoretical investigations disclose the broadened visible light absorption range and narrow optical band gap of MPc-THHI-COFs. This in combination with their 3D nanochannels endows them with efficient photocatalysis performance for H2O2 generation from O2 and H2O via 2e- oxygen reduction reaction and 2e- water oxidation reaction under visible-light irradiation (λ >400 nm). This work provides valuable result for the development of high connectivity functional COFs towards diverse application potentials.

Accessible Tetrathiafulvalene Moieties in a 3D Covalent Organic Framework for Enhanced Near-Infrared Photo-Thermal Conversion and Photo-Electrical Response

Redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit distinctive electrochemical and photoelectrical properties, but their prevalent two-dimensional (2D) structure with densely packed TTF moieties limits the accessibility of redox center and constrains their potential applications. To overcome this challenge, an 8-connected TTF linker (TTF-8CHO) is designed as a new building block for the construction of three-dimensional (3D) COFs. This approach led to the successful synthesis of a 3D COF with the bcu topology, designated as TTF-8CHO-COF. In comparison to its 2D counterpart employing a 4-connected TTF linker, the 3D COF design enhances access to redox sites, facilitating controlled oxidation by I2 or Au3+ to tune physical properties. When irradiated with a 0.7 W cm-2 808 nm laser, the oxidized 3D COF samples (I X - ${\mathrm{I}}_{\mathrm{X}}^{-}$ @TTF-8CHO-COF and Au NPs@TTF-8CHO-COF) demonstrated rapid temperature increases of 239.3 and 146.1 °C, respectively, which surpassed those of pristine 3D COF (65.6 °C) and the 2D COF counterpart (6.4 °C increment after I2 treatment). Furthermore, the oxidation of the 3D COF heightened its photoelectrical responsiveness under 808 nm laser irradiation. This augmentation in photothermal and photoelectrical response can be attributed to the higher concentration of TTF·+ radicals generated through the oxidation of well-exposed TTF moieties.

Reticular synthesis of 8-connected carboxyl hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for white-light-emission

The rational design and construction of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are crucial for enabling their practical applications, but controlling their structure and preparation as intended remains challenging. Inspired by reticular chemistry, two novel blue-emitting NKM-HOF-1 and NKM-HOF-2 were successfully constructed based on two judiciously designed peripherally extended pentiptycene carboxylic acids, namely H8PEP-OBu and H8PEP-OMe, respectively. The large pores within these two HOFs can adsorb fluorescent molecules such as diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and 9-anthraldehyde (AnC) to form HOFs ⊃ DPP/AnC composites, subsequently used in the fabrication of white-light-emitting devices (WLEDs). Specifically, two WLEDs were assembled by coating NKM-HOF-1 ⊃ DPP-0.13/AnC-3.5 and NKM-HOF-2 ⊃ DPP-0.12/AnC-3 on a 330 nm ultraviolet LED bulb, respectively. The corresponding CIE coordinates were (0.29, 0.33) and (0.32, 0.34), along with corresponding color temperatures of 7815 K and 6073 K. This work effectively demonstrates the feasibility of employing reticular chemistry strategies to predict and design HOFs with specific topologies for targeted applications.

Lithiophilic Covalent Organic Framework as Anode Coating for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

The growth of disorganized lithium dendrites and weak solid electrolyte interphase greatly impede the practical application of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new kind of stable polyimide covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which have a high density of well-aligned lithiophilic quinoxaline and phthalimide units anchored within the uniform one-dimensional channels. The COFs can serve as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase on lithium metal anode, effectively guiding the uniform deposition of lithium ions and inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrites. The unsymmetrical Li||COF-Cu battery exhibits a Coulombic efficiency of 99 % at a current density of 0.5 mA cm-2 , which can be well retained up to 400 cycles. Meanwhile, the Li-COF||LFP full cell shows a Coulombic efficiency over 99 % at a charge of 0.3 C. And its capacity can be well maintained up to 91 % even after 150 cycles. Therefore, the significant electrochemical cycling stability illustrates the feasibility of employing COFs in solving the disordered deposition of lithium ions in lithium metal batteries.

Encapsulating Sulfur into a Gel-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous and Microporous Carbon Sponge for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The practical application of Li-S batteries (LSBs) has long been impeded by the inefficient utilization of sulfur and slow kinetics. Utilizing conductive carbonaceous frameworks as a host scaffold presents an efficient and cost-effective approach to enhance sulfur utilization for redox reactions in LSBs. However, the interaction of pure carbon materials with lithium polysulfide intermediates (LiPSs) is limited to weak van der Waals forces. Hence, the development of an economical method for synthesizing heteroatom-doped carbon materials for sulfur fixation is of paramount importance. In this study, we introduce a hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon sponge (NPCS) with an exceptionally high BET surface area of 3182.2 m2 g-1, achieved through a facile template-assisted polymerization method. The incorporation of inorganic salts, free radical polymerization, and deuteric freeze-drying techniques facilitates the formation of hierarchical pores within the NPCS. After sulfur fixation, the resulting S/NPCS electrode demonstrates remarkable electrochemical performance in LSBs. Specifically, it achieves an 80% sulfur utilization rate, maintains a high reversible specific capacity of 400 mA h g-1 even after 600 cycles at a demanding current density of 5.0 A g-1, and exhibits superior rate capability. It is believed that this work will inspire the rational design of cost-effective carbon-based electrodes for high-performance LSBs.

Synthesis of 12-Connected Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework with lnj Topology

The structural exploration of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) is of great significance to the development of COF materials. Different from structurally diverse MOFs, which have a variety of connectivity (3-24), now the valency of 3D COFs is limited to only 4, 6, and 8. Therefore, the exploration of organic building blocks with higher connectivity is a necessary path to broaden the scope of 3D COF structures. Herein, for the first time, we have designed and synthesized a 12-connected triptycene-based precursor (triptycene-12-CHO) with 12 symmetrical distributions of aldehyde groups, which is also the highest valency reported until now. Based on this unique 12-connected structure, we have successfully prepared a novel 3D COF with lnj topology (termed 3D-lnj-COF). The as-synthesized 3D COF exhibits honeycomb main pores and permanent porosity with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 1159.6 m2 g-1. This work not only provides a strategy for synthesizing precursors with a high connectivity but also provides inspiration for enriching the variety of 3D COFs.

Hydrophobic Trinuclear Copper Cluster-Containing Organic Framework for Synergetic Electrocatalytic Synthesis of Amino Acids

Electrocatalytic synthesis of amino acids provides a promising green and efficient pathway to manufacture the basic substances of life. Herein, reaction of 2,5-perfluroalkyl-terepthalohydrazide and tris(4-µ2 -O-carboxaldehyde-pyrazolato-N, N')-tricopper affords a crystalline trinuclear copper cluster-containing organic framework, named F-Cu3 -OF. Incorporation of abundant hydrophobic perfluroalkyl groups inside the channels of F-Cu3 -OF is revealed to successfully suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction via preventing H+ cation with large polarity from the framework of F-Cu3 -OF and in turn increasing the adsorption of other substrates with relatively small polarity like NO3 - and keto acids on the active sites. The copper atoms with short distance in the trinuclear copper clusters of F-Cu3 -OF enable simultaneous activization of NO3 - and keto acids, facilitating the following synergistic and efficient C─N coupling on the basis of in situ spectroscopic investigations together with theoretical calculation. Combination of these effects leads to efficient electroproduction of various amino acids including glycine, alanine, leucine, valine, and phenylalanine from NO3 - and keto acids with a Faraday efficiency of 42%-71% and a yield of 187-957 µmol cm-2 h-1 , representing the thus far best performance. Constructing Wide-Temperature Lithium-Sulfur Batteries by Using a Covalent Organic Nanosheet Wrapped Carbon Nanotube

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold the superiority of eminent theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1 ). However, the ponderous sulfur reduction reaction and the issue of polysulfide shuttling pose significant obstacles to achieving the practical wide-temperature operation of Li-S batteries. Herein, a covalent organic nanosheet-wrapped carbon nanotubes (denoted CON/CNT) composite is synthesized as an electrocatalyst for wide-temperature Li-S batteries. The design incorporates the CON skeleton, which contains imide and triazine functional units capable of chemically adsorbing polysulfides, and the underlaid CNTs facilitate the conversion of captured polysulfides enabled by enhanced conductivity. The electrocatalytic behavior and chemical interplay between polysulfides and the CON/CNT interlayer are elucidated by in situ X-ray diffraction detections and theoretical calculations. Resultantly, the CON/CNT-modified cells demonstrate upgraded performances, including wide-temperature operation ranging from 0 to 65 °C, high-rate performance (625 mAh g-1 at 5.0 C), exceptional high-rate cyclability (1000 cycles at 5.0 C), and stable operation under high sulfur loading (4.0 mg cm-2 ) and limited electrolyte (5 µL mgs -1 ). These findings might guide the development of advanced Li-S batteries.

Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with nia nets for efficient separation of benzene/cyclohexane mixtures

The synthesis of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with highly connected building blocks presents a significant challenge. In this study, we report two 3D COFs with the nia topology, named JUC-641 and JUC-642, by introducing planar hexagonal and triangular prism nodes. Notably, our adsorption studies and breakthrough experiments reveal that both COFs exhibit exceptional separation capabilities, surpassing previously reported 3D COFs and most porous organic polymers, with a separation factor of up to 2.02 for benzene and cyclohexane. Additionally, dispersion-corrected density functional theory analysis suggests that the good performance of these 3D COFs can be attributed to the incorporation of highly aromatic building blocks and the presence of extensive pore structures. Consequently, this research not only expands the diversity of COFs but also highlights the potential of functional COF materials as promising candidates for environmentally-friendly separation applications.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Cutting-Edge Materials for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Water Harvesting from Air

The implacable rise of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentration in the atmosphere and acute water stress are one of the central challenges of our time. Present-day chemistry is strongly inclined towards more sustainable solutions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), attributable to their structural designability with atomic precision, functionalizable chemical environment and robust extended architectures, have demonstrated promising performances in CO2 trapping and water harvesting from air. In this Review, we discuss the major developments in this field as well as sketch out the opportunities and shortcomings that remain over large-scale COF synthesis, device engineering, and long-term performance in real environments.

Construction of Thiadiazole-Bridged sp2-Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Frameworks with Diminished Excitation Binding Energy Toward Superior Photocatalysis

Sp2-carbon-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (sp2c-COFs) have emerged as promising platforms for phototo-chemical energy conversion due to their tailorable optoelectronic properties, in-plane π-conjugations, and robust structures. However, the development of sp2c-COFs in photocatalysis is still highly hindered by their limited linkage chemistry. Herein, we report a novel thiadiazole-bridged sp2c-COF (sp2c-COF-ST) synthesized by thiadiazole-mediated aldol-type polycondensation. The resultant sp2c-COF-ST demonstrates high chemical stability under strong acids and bases (12 M HCl or 12 M NaOH). The electro-deficient thiadiazole together with fully conjugated and planar skeleton endows sp2c-COF-ST with superior photoelectrochemical performance and charge-carrier separation and migration ability. As a result, when employed as a photocathode, sp2c-COF-ST exhibits a significant photocurrent up to ∼14.5 μA cm-2 at 0.3 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under visible-light irradiation (>420 nm), which is much higher than those analogous COFs with partial imine linkages (mix-COF-SNT ∼ 9.5 μA cm-2) and full imine linkages (imi-COF-SNNT ∼ 4.9 μA cm-2), emphasizing the importance of the structure-property relationships. Further temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the sp2c-COF-ST has smaller exciton binding energy as well as effective mass in comparison to mix-COF-SNT and imi-COF-SNNT, which suggests that the sp2c-conjugated skeleton enhances the exciton dissociation and carrier migration under light irradiation. This work highlights the design and preparation of thiadiazole-bridged sp2c-COFs with promising photocatalytic performance.

Nonmetallic-Bonding Fe-Mn Diatomic Pairs Anchored on Hollow Carbonaceous Nanodisks for High-Performance Li-S Battery

The issues of polysulfide shuttling and lethargic sulfur redox reaction (SROR) kinetics are the toughest obstacles of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery. Herein, integrating the merits of increased density of metal sites and synergistic catalytic effect, a unique single-atom catalyst (SAC) with nonmetallic-bonding Fe-Mn diatomic pairs anchored on hollow nitrogen-doped carbonaceous nanodisk (denoted as FeMnDA@NC) is successfully constructed and well characterized by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, etc. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the Fe-Mn diatomic pairs can effectively inhibit the shuttle effect by enhancing the adsorption ability retarding the polysulfide migration and accelerate the SROR kinetics. As a result, the Li-S battery assembled with FeMnDA@NC modified separator possesses an excellent electrochemical performance with ultrahigh specific capacities of 1419 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 885 mAh g-1 at 3.0 C, respectively. An outstanding specific capacity of 1165 mAh g-1 is achieved at 1.0 C and maintains at 731 mAh g-1 after 700 cycles. Notably, the assembled Li-S battery with a high sulfur loading of 5.35 mg cm-2 harvests a practical areal capacity of 5.70 mAh cm-2 at 0.2 C. A new perspective is offered here to construct advanced SACs suitable for the Li-S battery.

Porous Organic Polymers as Active Electrode Materials for Energy Storage Applications

Eco-friendly and efficient energy production and storage technologies are highly demanded to address the environmental and energy crises. Porous organic polymers (POPs) are a class of lightweight porous network materials covalently linked by organic building blocks, possessing high surface areas, tunable pores, and designable components and structures. Due to their unique structural and compositional advantages, POPs have recently emerged as promising electrode materials for energy storage devices, particularly in the realm of supercapacitors and ion batteries. In this work, a comprehensive overview of recent progress and applications of POPs as electrode materials in energy storage devices, including the structural features and synthesis strategies of various POPs, as well as their applications in supercapacitors, lithium batteries, sodium batteries, and potassium batteries are provided. Finally, insights are provided into the future research directions of POPs in electrochemical energy storage technologies. It is anticipated that this work can provide readers with a comprehensive background on the design of POPs-based electrode materials and ignite more research in the development of next-generation energy storage devices.

Observation of Interpenetrated Topology Isomerism for Covalent Organic Frameworks with Atom-Resolution Single Crystal Structures

Rational control and understanding of isomerism are of significance but still remain a great challenge in reticular frameworks, in particular, for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to the complicated synthesis and energy factors. Herein, reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetra(4-formylphenyl)-2,2',6,6'-tetramethoxy-1,1'-biphenyl (TFTB) with 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)bimesityl (TAPB) under different reaction conditions affords single crystals of two 3D COF isomers, namely, USTB-20-dia and USTB-20-qtz. Their structures with resolutions up to 0.9-1.1 Å have been directly solved by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. USTB-20-dia and USTB-20-qtz show rare 2 × 2-fold interpenetrated dia-b nets and 3-fold interpenetrated qtz-b frameworks. Comparative studies of the crystal structures of these COFs and theoretical simulation results indicate the crucial role of the flexible molecular configurations of building blocks in the present interpenetrated topology isomerism. This work not only presents the rare COF isomers but also gains an understanding of the formation of framework isomerism from both single crystal structures and theoretical simulation perspectives.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on double-active-center polyimide covalent organic frameworks for sensitive analysis of levofloxacin

The development of a simple and sensitive electrochemical sensing platform for levofloxacin (LVF) analysis is of great significance to human health. In this work, a covalent organic framework (TP-COF) was in situ grown on the surface of Sn-MoC nanospheres with nanoflower-like morphology through a one-pot method to obtain the TP-COF@Sn-MoC composite. The prepared composite was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to realize the sensitive detection of levofloxacin. TP-COF was formed by polycondensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), in which C = O and C = N groups served as double active centers for the recognition and electrocatalytic oxidation of the target molecule. Meanwhile, the introduction of Sn-MoC improved the conductivity of the electrode. The TP-COF@Sn-MoC composite produced a strong synergistic effect and showed a high electrocatalytic ability toward levofloxacin oxidation. The linear range of LVF was 0.6-1000 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.029 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the sensor has been successfully applied for the analysis of LVF in human urine and blood serum samples with acceptable recovery rates, demonstrating that the sensor was promising in practical applications.

Unique Octupolar 2D-Polymer Frameworks as Mixed Conductors and Metal-Free Catalysts for Dual-Promoted Li and S Electrochemistry: Multi-regulation Role of Ethoxylation Chemistry

Here, we for the first time introduce ethoxylation chemistry to develop a new octupolar cyano-vinylene-linked 2D polymer framework (Cyano-OCF-EO) capable of acting as efficient mixed electron/ion conductors and metal-free sulfur evolution catalysts for dual-promoted Li and S electrochemistry. Our strategy creates a unique interconnected network of strongly-coupled donor 3-(acceptor-core) octupoles in Cyano-OCF-EO, affording enhanced intramolecular charge transfer, substantial active sites and crowded open channels. This enables Cyano-OCF-EO as a new versatile separator modifier, which endows the modified separator with superior catalytic activity for sulfur conversion and rapid Li ion conduction with the high Li+ transference number up to 0.94. Thus, the incorporation of Cyano-OCF-EO can concurrently regulate sulfur redox reactions and Li-ion flux in Li-S cells, attaining boosted bidirectional redox kinetics, inhibited polysulfide shuttle and dendrite-free Li anodes. The Cyano-OCF-EO-involved Li-S cell is endowed with excellent overall electrochemical performance especially large areal capacity of 7.5 mAh cm-2 at high sulfur loading of 8.7 mg cm-2 . Mechanistic studies unveil the dominant multi-promoting effect of the triethoxylation on electron and ion conduction, polysulfide adsorption and catalytic conversion as well as previously-unexplored -CN/C-O dual-site synergistic effect for enhanced polysulfide adsorption and reduced energy barrier toward Li2 S conversion.

Single-Crystal Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Constructed from 6-Connected Triangular Prism Node

The limited structural diversity of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) greatly restricts their application exploration. Therefore, there is an urgent need to expand their library of molecular building blocks, such as the development of highly connected (>4 reaction sites) polyhedral nodes. Herein, by precisely controlling the precursor conformation, we rationally designed a new 6-connected triangular prism node derived from the triphenylbenzene molecule and further used it to construct a novel 3D COF (3D-TMTAPB-COF) via imine condensation reaction. Surprisingly, without the addition of competing reagents, 3D-TMTAPB-COF crystallized directly into single crystals of ∼15 μm in size and was determined to adopt a rare 6-fold interpenetrated (Class IIIa interpenetration) acs topology. In addition, 3D-TMTAPB-COF showed a high SF6 adsorption capacity (60.9 cm3 g-1) and good SF6/N2 selectivity (335) at 298 K and 1 bar, superior to those of most crystalline porous materials. This work not only confirms the possibility of growing large-size single-crystal 3D COFs formed with strong covalent bonds by a solvothermal method in the absence of modulators, but also reports a novel triangular prism node for future construction of 3D COFs with interesting applications.

Fabricating s-collidine-derived vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks for photocatalysis

Research into vinyl-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has grown significantly in recent years due to various attractive properties. Herein, we design and synthesize two highly crystalline and stable 2,4,6-collidine-derived vinylene-linked 2D COFs. Both COFs can act as efficient photocatalysts to facilitate visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation. The TM-TBT-COF was observed to exhibit superior activity and recyclability owing to its excellent semiconducting properties.
