From Short- to Long-Range Chiral Recognition on Surfaces: Chiral Assembly and Synthesis

Research on chiral behaviors of small organic molecules at solid surfaces, including chiral assembly and synthesis, can not only help unravel the origin of the chiral phenomenon in biological/chemical systems but also provide promising strategies to build up unprecedented chiral surfaces or nanoarchitectures with advanced applications in novel nanomaterials/nanodevices. Understanding how molecular chirality is recognized is considered to be a mandatory basis for such studies. In this review, a series of recent studies in chiral assembly and synthesis at well-defined metal surfaces under ultra-high vacuum conditions are outlined. More importantly, the intrinsic mechanisms of chiral recognition are highlighted, including short/long-range chiral recognition in chiral assembly and two main strategies to steer the reaction pathways and modulate selective synthesis of specific chiral products on surfaces.

Kinetic control over the chiral-selectivity in the formation of organometallic polymers on a Ag(110) surface

Methods to control chiral-selectivity in molecular reactions through external inputs are of importance, both from a fundamental and technological point of view. Here, the self-assembly of prochiral 6,12-dibromochrysene monomers on Ag(110) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. Deposition of the monomers on a substrate held at room temperature leads to the formation of 1D achiral organometallic polymers. When the monomers are instead deposited on a substrate held at 373 K, homochiral organometallic polymers consisting of either the left- or right-handed enantiomer are formed. Post-deposition annealing of room temperature deposited samples at >373 K does not transform the achiral 1D organometallic polymers into homochiral ones and thus, does not yield the same final structure as if depositing onto a substrate held at the same elevated temperature. Furthermore, annealing promotes neither the formation of 1D covalently-coupled polymers nor the formation of graphene nanoribbons. Our results identify substrate temperature as an important factor in on-surface chiral synthesis, thereby demonstrating the importance of considering kinetic effects and the decisive role they can play in structure formation.

Homochiral hierarchical molecular assemblies through dynamic combination of conformational states of a single chiral building block at the liquid/solid interface

We herein report the construction of homochiral, hierarchical self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) at the liquid/graphite interface using a single molecular building block, a chiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (cDBA) derivative with three chiral alkoxy and three hydroxy groups positioned in an alternating manner on the DBA core. The cDBA molecules form homochiral hierarchical SAMNs consisting of triangular clusters of several sizes, the size of which can be tuned by solvent polarity and solute concentration, reaching periodicities as large as 9.3 nm. We demonstrate the successful transmission of chirality information from the single molecular level to the hierarchical SAMN level, in a process that is mediated by dynamic self-sorting.

Two-Dimensional Hetero- to Homochiral Phase Transition from Dynamic Adsorption of Barbituric Acid Derivatives

Barbituric acid derivative (TDPT) is an achiral molecule, and its adsorption on a surface results in two opposite enantiomerically oriented motifs, namely TDPT-Sp and Rp. Two types of building blocks can be formed; block I is enantiomer-pure and is built up of the same motifs (format SpSp or RpRp) whereas block II is enantiomer-mixed and composes both motifs (format SpRp), respectively. The organization of the building blocks determines the formation of different nanoarchitectures which are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy at a liquid/HOPG interface. Sophisticated, highly symmetric "nanowaves" are first formed from both building blocks I and II and are heterochiral. The "nanowaves" are metastable and evolve stepwisely into more close-packed "nanowires" which are formed from enantiomer-pure building block I and are homochiral. A dynamic hetero- to homochiral transformation and simultaneous multi-scale phase transitions are demonstrated at the single-molecule level. Our work provides novel insights into the control and the origin of chiral assemblies and chiral transitions, revealing the various roles of enantiomeric selection and chiral competition, driving forces, stability and molecular coverage.

Anchoring and Reacting On-Surface to Achieve Programmability

On-surface synthesis has developed into a modern method to fabricate low-dimensional molecular nanostructures with atomic precision. It impresses the chemistry community mostly via its simplicity, selectivity, and programmability during the synthesis. However, an insufficient mechanistic understanding of on-surface reactions and the discriminations in methodologies block it out from the conventional cognition of reaction and catalysis, which inhibits the extensive implication of on-surface synthesis. In this Perspective, we summarize the empirical paradigms of conceptually appealing programmability in on-surface synthesis. We endeavor to deliver the message that the impressive programmability is related to chemical heterogeneity which can also be coded at the molecular level and deciphered by the catalytic surfaces in varying chemical environments as specific chemical selectivity. With the assistance of structure-sensitive techniques, it is possible to recognize the chemical heterogeneity on surfaces to provide insight into the programmable on-surface construction of molecular nanoarchitectures and to reshape the correlation between the mechanistic understanding in on-surface synthesis and conventional chemistry.

Tailoring long-range superlattice chirality in molecular self-assemblies via weak fluorine-mediated interactions

Controllable fabrication of enantiospecific molecular superlattices is a matter of imminent scientific and technological interest. Herein, we demonstrate that long-range superlattice chirality in molecular self-assemblies can be tailored by tuning the interplay of weak intermolecular non-covalent interactions between hexaphenylbenzene-based enantiomers. By means of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, we demonstrate that the functionalization of a hexaphenylbenzene-based molecule with fluorine (F) atoms leads to the formation of molecular self-assemblies with distinct long-range chiral recognition patterns. We employed density functional theory calculations to quantify F-mediated lone pair F⋯π, C-H⋯F, and F⋯F interactions attributed to the distinct enantiospecific molecular self-organizations. Our findings underpin a viable route to fabricate long-range chiral recognition patterns in supramolecular assemblies by engineering the weak non-covalent intermolecular interactions.

Post-Functionalization of Supramolecular Polymers on Surface and the Chiral Assembly-Induced Enantioselective Reaction

Although post-functionalization is extensively used to introduce diverse functional groups into supramolecular polymers (SPs) in solution, post-functionalization of SPs on surfaces still remains unexplored. Here we achieved the on-surface post-functionalization of two SPs derived from 5,10,15-tri-(4-pyridyl)-20-bromophenyl porphyrin (Br-TPyP) via cross-coupling reactions on Au(111). The ladder-shaped, Cu-coordinated SPs preformed from Br-TPyP were functionalized through Heck reaction with 4-vinyl-1,1'-biphenyl. In the absence of Cu, Br-TPyP formed chiral SPs as two enantiomers via self-assembly, which were functionalized via divergent cross-coupling reaction with 4-isocyano-1,1'-biphenyl (ICBP). Surprisingly, this reaction was discovered as an enantioselective on-surface reaction induced by the chirality of SPs. Mechanistic analysis and DFT calculations indicated that after debromination of Br-TPyP and the first addition of ICBP, only one attack direction of ICBP to the chiral SP intermediate is permissive in the second addition step due to the steric hindrance, which guaranteed the high enantioselectivity of the reaction.

Surface-controlled reversal of the selectivity of halogen bonds

Intermolecular halogen bonds are ideally suited for designing new molecular assemblies because of their strong directionality and the possibility of tuning the interactions by using different types of halogens or molecular moieties. Due to these unique properties of the halogen bonds, numerous areas of application have recently been identified and are still emerging. Here, we present an approach for controlling the 2D self-assembly process of organic molecules by adsorption to reactive vs. inert metal surfaces. Therewith, the order of halogen bond strengths that is known from gas phase or liquids can be reversed. Our approach relies on adjusting the molecular charge distribution, i.e., the σ-hole, by molecule-substrate interactions. The polarizability of the halogen and the reactiveness of the metal substrate are serving as control parameters. Our results establish the surface as a control knob for tuning molecular assemblies by reversing the selectivity of bonding sites, which is interesting for future applications.

Transferring axial molecular chirality through a sequence of on-surface reactions

Fine management of chiral processes on solid surfaces has progressed over the years, yet still faces the need for the controlled and selective production of advanced chiral materials. Here, we report on the use of enantiomerically enriched molecular building blocks to demonstrate the transmission of their intrinsic chirality along a sequence of on-surface reactions. Triggered by thermal annealing, the on-surface reactions induced in this experiment involve firstly the coupling of the chiral reactants into chiral polymers and subsequently their transformation into planar prochiral graphene nanoribbons. Our study reveals that the axial chirality of the reactant is not only transferred to the polymers, but also to the planar chirality of the graphene nanoribbon end products. Such chirality transfer consequently allows, starting from adequate enantioenriched reactants, for the controlled production of chiral and prochiral organic nanoarchitectures with pre-defined handedness.

Organometallic polymers synthesized from prochiral molecules by a surface-assisted synthesis on Ag(111)

Organometallic polymers can be successfully synthesized on a Ag(111) surface via a surface-assisted synthesis by choosing prochiral 4,4'-dibromo-2,2'-bis(2-phenylethynyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (DBPB) molecules as the designed precursor. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy investigation reveals that prochiral molecules show chirality on a surface and can evolve into organometallic chains on the Ag(111) surface based on Ullmann coupling. Due to the special structural features of DBPB molecules, chiral selectivity will be lost in the organometallic polymers. This result may provide an important basis for selecting suitable precursors to fabricate chiral covalent nanostructures on a surface.

Long-Range Chirality Recognition of a Polar Molecule on Au(111)

Chiral molecular self‐assemblies were usually achieved using short‐range intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen‐, metal–organic, and covalent bonding. However, unavoidable surface defects, such as step edges, surface reconstructions, or site dislocations may limit the applicability of short‐range chirality recognition. Long‐range chirality recognition on surfaces would be an appealing but challenging strategy for chiral reservation across surface defects at long distances. Now, long‐range chirality recognition is presented between neighboring 3‐bromo‐naphthalen‐2‐ol (BNOL) stripes on an inert Au(111) surface across the herringbone reconstruction as investigated by STM and DFT calculations. The key to achieving such recognition is the herringbone reconstruction‐induced local dipole accumulation at the edges of the BNOL stripes. The neighboring stripes are then forced to adopt the same chirality to create the opposite edged dipoles and neutralize the neighbored dipole moments.

On-Surface Photochemistry of Pre-Ordered 1-Methyl-2-phenyl-acetylenes: C-H Bond Activation and Intermolecular Coupling on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite

In this contribution we report on light-induced metal-free coupling of propynylbenzene molecular units on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The reaction occurs within the self-assembled monolayer and leads to the generation of covalently coupled 1,5-hexadiyne and para-terphenyl derivatives under topological control. Such photochemical uncatalysed pathway represents an original approach in the field of topological C-C coupling at the solid/liquid interface and provides new insight into the low temperature formation of aromatic compounds at the surface of carbonaceous supports.

Intermediate States Directed Chiral Transfer on a Silver Surface

Chiral synthesis on surfaces has acquired tremendous interest. We herein report a novel approach of two-dimensional chiral transfer directed by metal-organic intermediate states on a silver surface. With initial deposition at low temperature, the achiral 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl molecules self-assemble into large scale two-dimensional networks with 4-fold symmetry via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Fine controlled annealing, however, leads to the formation of tetramer-like chiral metal-organic hybrids, which self-organize into enantiomeric islands on the Ag(100) surface. Subsequent ortho C-C couplings of the reactants lead to dimer products. Of great importance, the chirality expressions of the dimer products are observed to be transferred directly from that of the tetramer intermediate states. The detailed reaction pathways are rationalized by DFT calculations and synchrotron-based XPS experiments, demonstrating the mechanisms of the chiral transfer.

Self-assembly directed one-step synthesis of [4]radialene on Cu(100) surfaces

The synthetic challenges of radialenes have precluded their practical applications. Here, we report a one-step synthetic protocol of [4]radialene on a copper surface. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements reveal that such catalytic reaction proceeds readily with high selectivity at the temperature below 120 K. First-principles calculations show that the reaction pathway is characterized by firstly the cooperative inter-molecular hydrogen tautomerization and then the C–C bond formation. The feasibility of such cyclotetramerization reaction can be interpreted by the surface effect of Cu(100), which firstly plays an important role in directing the molecular assembly and then serves as an active catalyst in the hydrogen tautomerization and C–C coupling processes. This work presents not only a novel strategy to the scant number of synthetic methods to produce [4]radialenes via a novel [1 + 1 + 1 + 1] reaction pathway, but also a successful example of C–C bond coupling reactions guided by the surface-induced C–H/π assembly.

Radialenes have distinct structural, electronic and chemical properties from other hydrocarbons, but their synthesis remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a copper catalyzed one-step synthetic protocol of [4]radialene via the cyclotetramerization of phenylacetylene molecules upon thermal activation.

Surface-Confined Dynamic Covalent System Driven by Olefin Metathesis

Understanding how the constitutional dynamics of a dynamic combinatorial library (DCL) adapts to surfaces (compared to bulk solution) is of fundamental importance to the design of adaptive materials. Submolecular resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can provide detailed insights into olefin metathesis at the interface. Analysis of the distribution of products has revealed the important role of environmental pressure, reaction temperature, and substituent effects in surface-confined olefin metathesis. We also report an unprecedented preferred deposition and assembly of linear polymers, and some specific oligomers, on the surface that are hard to obtain otherwise.

Chirality in adsorption on solid surfaces

In the present review we survey the main advances made in recent years on the understanding of chemical chirality at solid surfaces. Chirality is an important topic, made particularly relevant by the homochiral nature of the biochemistry of life on Earth, and many chiral chemical reactions involve solid surfaces. Here we start our discussion with a description of surface chirality and of the different ways that chirality can be bestowed on solid surfaces. We then expand on the studies carried out to date to understand the adsorption of chiral compounds at a molecular level. We summarize the work published on the adsorption of pure enantiomers, of enantiomeric mixtures, and of prochiral molecules on chiral and achiral model surfaces, especially on well-defined metal single crystals but also on other flat substrates such as highly ordered pyrolytic graphite. Several phenomena are identified, including surface reconstruction and chiral imprinting upon adsorption of chiral agents, and the enhancement or suppression of enantioselectivity seen in some cases upon adsorption of enantiomixtures of chiral compounds. The possibility of enhancing the enantiopurity of adsorbed layers upon the addition of chiral seeds and the so-called "sergeants and soldiers" phenomenon are presented. Examples are provided where the chiral behavior has been associated with either thermodynamic or kinetic driving forces. Two main approaches to the creation of enantioselective surface sites are discussed, namely, via the formation of supramolecular chiral ensembles made out of small chiral adsorbates, and by adsorption of more complex chiral molecules capable of providing suitable chiral environments for reactants by themselves, via the formation of individual adsorbate:modifier adducts on the surface. Finally, a discussion is offered on the additional effects generated by the presence of the liquid phase often required in practical applications such as enantioselective crystallization, chiral chromatography, and enantioselective catalysis.

Ionic interaction-induced assemblies of bimolecular “chessboard” structures

Here we applied ionic interactions as the driving force to fabricate well-ordered bicomponent assemblies by using two porphyrin ions equipped with oppositely-charged groups.

Frontiers of supramolecular chemistry at solid surfaces

Supramolecular chemistry on solid surfaces represents an exciting field of research that continues to develop in new and unexpected directions.
