Abstract
Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Abstract
Organic ferroelectrics have received a great deal of interest due to their exclusive properties. However, organic ferroelectrics have not been fully explored, which hinders their practical application. Here, we presented a novel metal-free organic molecular ferroelectric [4-MCHA][ClO4 ] (1) (4-MCHA=trans-4-methylcyclohexylamine), which exhibits an above-room-temperature of 328 K. Strikingly, the single crystal structure analysis of 1 shows that the driving force of phase transition is related to the interesting chair-boat conformation change of 4-MCHA cation, in addition to the order-disorder transition of ClO4 - anion. Using piezoelectric response force microscopy (PFM), the presence of domains and the implemented polarization switching were clearly observed, which explicitly determined the presence of room-temperature ferroelectricity of 1. As far as we know, the ferroelectric phase transition mechanism attributed to the conformational change in a trans isomeric cation is very rare. This research enriched the path of designing ferroelectric materials and smart materials.

Abstract
The combination of chirality and phase-transition materials has broad application prospects. Therefore, based on the quasi-spherical theory and the thought strategy of introducing chirality, we have successfully synthesized a pair of chiral enantiomeric ligands (R/S)-triethyl-(2-hydroxypropyl)ammonium iodide, which can be combined with a tin hexachloride anion to obtain a pair of new organic-inorganic hybrid enantiomeric high-temperature plastic phase-transition materials: (R/S)-[CH3 CH(OH)CH2 N(CH2 CH3 )3 ]2 SnCl6 (1-R/1-S), which have a high temperature phase transition of Tc =384 K, crystallize in the P21 chiral space group at room temperature, and have obvious CD signals. In addition, compounds 1-R and 1-S have a good low-loss dielectric switch and broadband gap. This work is conducive to the research into chiral high-temperature reversible plastic phase-transition materials, and promotes the development of multi-functional phase-transition materials.

Abstract
Multifarious molecular ferroelectrics with multipolar axial characteristics have emerged in recent years, enriching the scenarios for energy harvesting, sensing, and information processing. The increased polar axes have enhanced the urgency of distinguishing different polarization states in material design, mechanism exploration, etc. However, conventional methods hardly meet the requirements of in situ, fast, microscale, contactless, and nondestructive features due to their inherent limitations. Herein, SHG polarimetry is introduced to probe the multioriented polarizations on a nanosized multiaxial molecular ferroelectric, i.e., TMCM-CdCl3 nanoplates, as an example. Combined with the analysis of the second-order susceptibility tensor, SHG polarimetry could serve as an effective method to detect the polarization orders and domain distributions of molecular ferroelectrics. Profiting from the full-optical feature, SHG polarimetry can even be performed on samples covered by transparent mediums, 2D materials, or thin metal electrodes. Our research might spark further fundamental studies and expand the application boundaries of next-generation ferroelectric materials.

Abstract
Ferroelectric materials are not only important electronic functional materials, but also considered as the most promising intelligent basic materials, because they show good application prospects. Therefore, it is an urgent task to develop and explore new ferroelectric material systems. In addition, the most important feature of crown ethers is their ability to complex with positive ions, which is extremely useful in synthesis. We report that [NH3C2H4Cl(18-crown-6)](CF3SO3) (1) has a phase transition temperature Tc = 255 K, and there is an obvious SHG switch below Tc. At the same time, the saturation polarization value Ps = 1.25 μC cm-2 is obtained from the hysteresis loop, which directly proves the ferroelectric nature of compound 1. It is noteworthy that the second harmonic response test of compound 1 shows a symmetric transition from a non-centrosymmetric to a centrosymmetric point group, that is a symmetry break from the paraelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase. This work is expected to promote the further exploration of organic crown ether ferroelectrics and provide a way to design and synthesize organic crown ether ferroelectrics.

Abstract
Inorganic ferroelectrics have long dominated research and applications, taking advantage of high piezoelectric performance in bulk polycrystalline ceramic forms. Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted growing interest because of their environmental friendliness, easy processing, lightweight, and good biocompatibility, while realizing the considerable piezoelectricity in their bulk polycrystalline forms remains a great challenge. Herein, for the first time, through ring enlargement, a molecular ferroelectric 1-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octonium perrhenate ([3.2.1-abco]ReO4 ) with a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 up to 118 pC/N in the polycrystalline pellet form is designed, which is higher than that of the parent 1-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptanium perrhenate ([2.2.1-abch]ReO4 , 90 pC/N) and those of most molecular ferroelectrics in polycrystalline or even single crystal forms. The ring enlargement reduces the molecular strain for easier molecular deformation, which contributes to the higher piezoelectric response in [3.2.1-abco]ReO4 . This work opens up a new avenue for exploring high piezoelectric polycrystalline molecular ferroelectrics with great potential in piezoelectric applications.

Abstract
Chiral ferroelectric crystals with intriguing features have attracted great interest and many with point or axial chirality based on the stereocarbon have been successively developed in recent years. However, ferroelectric crystals with stereogenic heteroatomic chirality have never been documented so far. Here, we discover and report a pair of enantiomeric stereogenic sulfur-chiral single-component organic ferroelectric crystals, Rs -tert-butanesulfinamide (Rs -tBuSA) and Ss -tert-butanesulfinamide (Ss -tBuSA) through the deep understanding of the chemical design of molecular ferroelectric crystals. Both enantiomers adopt chiral-polar point group 2 (C2 ) and exhibit mirror-image relationships. They undergo high-temperature 432F2-type plastic ferroelectric phase transition around 348 K. The ferroelectricity has been well confirmed by ferroelectric hysteresis loops and domains. Polarized light microscopy records the evolution of the ferroelastic domains, according with the fact that the 432F2-type phase transition is both ferroelectric and ferroelastic. The very soft characteristics with low elastic modulus and hardness reveals their excellent mechanical flexibility. This finding indicates the first stereosulfur chiral molecular ferroelectric crystals, opening up new fertile ground for exploring molecular ferroelectric crystals with great application prospects.

Abstract
Molecular ferroelectric materials are widely applied in piezoelectric converters, non-volatile memorizers, and photovoltaic devices due to their advantages of adjustable structure, lightweight, easy processing, and environmental friendliness. However, designing multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics with excellent properties has always been a great challenge. Herein, a multiaxial molecular ferroelectric is successfully designed by modifying the quasi-spherical cation dabco with CuBr2 to obtain halogenated [Bretdabco]CuBr4 (Bretdabco = N-bromoethyl-N'-diazabicyclo [2.2.2]octane), which crystallizes in polar point groups (C6). Typical ferroelectric behaviors featured by the P-E hysteresis loop and switched ferroelectric domain are exhibited. Notably, the molecular ferroelectric shows a high TC of 460 K, which is rare in the field and could greatly expand the application range of this material. In addition, the band gap is adjustable through the regulation of halogen. Both the UV absorption spectra and theoretical calculations indicate that the molecular ferroelectrics belong to a direct band gap (2.14 eV) semiconductor. This tunable and narrow band gap semiconductor molecular ferroelectric material with high TC can be utilized more effectively in the study of optoelectronics and sensors, including piezoelectric energy harvesters. This research may provide a promising approach for the development of multiaxial molecular ferroelectrics with a tiny band gap and high TC.

Abstract
One dimensional (1D) organic-inorganic halide hybrid perovskites have the advantages of excellent organic cation modifiability and diversity of inorganic framework structures, which cannot be ignored in the development of multi-functional phase-transition materials in photoelectric and photovoltaic devices. Here, we have successfully modified and synthesized an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite photoelectric multifunctional phase-transition material: [C7 H13 ONCH2 F]⋅PbBr3 (1). The synergistic effect of the order double disorder transition of organic cations and the change of the degree of distortion of the inorganic framework leads to its high temperature reversible phase-transition point of Tc =374 K/346 K and its ultra-low loss high-quality dielectric switch response. Through in-depth research and calculation, compound 1 also has excellent semiconductor characteristics with a band gap of 3.06 eV and the photoluminescence characteristics of self-trapped exciton (STE) broadband emission. Undoubtedly, this modification strategy provides a new choice for the research field of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite reversible phase-transition photoelectric multifunctional materials with rich coupling properties.

Abstract
The crystals of the tetrapropylammonium perchlorate ([(CH3CH2CH2)4N]ClO4, TePrAClO4) compound undergo two reversible phase transitions: at ca. T1 = 284 K and at ca. T2 = 445 K. The observed phase transitions and distinct dielectric and relaxation effects are due to the dynamic motions of the organic cations and anionic framework. The crystals become ordered at low temperatures, then disordered at room temperature (propyl chains of the organic part as well as perchlorate ions are disordered over the mirror plane at c = 1/4 and 3/4) and highly disordered at high temperatures. The comparable changes in the wavenumber and FWHM shifts (IR and Raman spectroscopy) in the case of tetrapropylammonium and perchlorate ions in the phase transition at T1 and slightly more significant changes for organic cations (juxtaposed with perchlorate ions) in the phase transition at T2 lead to a conclusion that the phase transition at T1 is equally driven by motions of the two ions, while the phase transition at T2 is more influenced by the motions of organic cations. The phase transition at T2 with its large entropy change resembles the behavior found in liquid crystals. The dielectric function values can be switched and tuned in the low- and high-dielectric states, which may indicate the potential application of this material in sensors or actuators.

Abstract
Molecular ferroelectrics (MFs) have been proven to demonstrate excellent properties even comparable to those of inorganic counterparts usually with heavy metals. However, the validation of their device applications is still at the infant stage. The polycrystalline feature of conventionally obtained MF films, the patterning challenges for microelectronics and the brittleness of crystalline films significantly hinder their development for organic integrated circuits, as well as emerging flexible electronics. Here, a large-area flexible memory array is demonstrated of oriented molecular ferroelectric single crystals (MFSCs) with nearly saturated polarization. Highly-uniform MFSC arrays are prepared on large-scale substrates including Si wafers and flexible substrates using an asymmetric-wetting and microgroove-assisted coating (AWMAC) strategy. Resultant flexible memory arrays exhibit excellent nonvolatile memory properties with a low-operating voltage of <5 V, i.e., nearly saturated ferroelectric polarization (6.5 µC cm-2 ), and long bending endurance (>103 ) under various bending radii. These results may open an avenue for scalable flexible MF electronics with high performance.

Abstract
Two new organic–inorganic hybrid double perovskites (R3HQ)4CsSm(NO3)8 (1) (R3HQ = (R)-(-)-3-quinuclidinol) and (R3HQ)4CsEu(NO3)8 (2) were synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit obvious phase transitions at 379 and 375 K, respectively, confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction. The rapid switching between high- and low-dielectric states makes it a typical dielectric material with a switchable dielectric constant for thermal stimulus response. Furthermore, 1 and 2 show attractive photoluminescence and paramagnetic behavior, and the fluorescence quantum yield of 2 reached 14.6%. These results show that compounds 1 and 2 can be used as excellent candidates for multifunctional intelligent materials, which also provides a new way for development of multifunctional materials.

Abstract
Molecular motion in crystals has attracted much attention for the development of stimuli-responsive materials. The most studied are molecules with few atoms or highly symmetrical molecules. To develop molecules with new motion characteristics, we synthesized a charge-transfer compound, namely, tropylium hexafluoridoantimonate(V)–1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (1/1), (C7H7)[SbF6]·C12H12, and studied its structural phase transition. In this compound, the tropylium cation and the 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene molecule have planar geometry, but the latter has low symmetry. They are stacked as a one-dimensional chain structure through π–π charge-transfer interactions. Weak intermolecular interactions and planar molecular geometry result in a large degree of freedom of in-plane motion. Upon heating, due to the in-plane rotation of the molecules, the compound undergoes an order–disorder structural phase transition (phase-transition temperature = 334 K). The space group of the room-temperature phase is P21/m and the space group of the high-temperature phase is P4/mmm. This phase transition is accompanied by significant dielectric anomalies. The current investigation shows that the structural features of the title compound can be used to construct functional materials with phase transitions, such as molecular ferroelectrics.

Abstract
Plastic ferroelectrics, featuring large entropy changes in phase transitions, hold great potential application for solid-state refrigeration due to the electrocaloric effect. Although conventional ceramic ferroelectrics (e.g., BaTiO3 and KNbO3) have been widely investigated in the fields of electrocaloric material and catalysis, organic plastic ferroelectrics with a high Curie point (T c) are rarely reported but are of great importance for the sake of environmental protection. Here, we reported an organic plastic ferroelectric, (-)-camphanic acid, which crystallizes in the P21 space group, chiral polar 2 (C2) point group, at room temperature. It undergoes plastic paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition with the Aizu notation of 23F2 and high T c of 414 K, showing large entropy gain (ΔS t = 48.2 J K-1 mol-1). More importantly, the rectangular polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis loop was recorded on the thin film samples with a large saturated polarization (P s) of 5.2 μC cm-2. The plastic phase transition is responsible for its multiaxial ferroelectric feature. This work highlights the discovery of organic multiaxial ferroelectrics driven by the motive of combining chirality and plastic phase transition, which will extensively promote the practical application of such unique functional materials.

Abstract
Solid-state phase transition materials have received extraordinary interest due to their rich physical properties, such as thermal, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties. Here, two In-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, (C6H5CH2CH2NH3)3[InBr5(H2O)] (1) and [(C3H7)4N][InCl4] (2), both display reversible phase transition and dielectric response. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicate that the phase transition temperatures (Tc) of 1 and 2 are 167 K and 351 K, respectively. Moreover, structural analyses disclose that the phase transition of 1 can be attributed to the order-disorder changes of phenethylammonium organic cations whereas the phase transition of 2 is caused by the order-disorder changes of [InCl4]- anions. The phase transitions of In-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds can be driven by the order-disorder changes of cations or anions. Therefore, the system of In-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds is very suitable for exploring organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials.

Abstract
Dynamic molecular processes, such as short- or long-range proton (H+) and ion (M+) motions, and molecular rotations in electrical conducting and magnetic molecular assemblies enable the fabrication of electron-H+ (or M+) coupling systems, while crystal lattice dynamics and molecular conformation changes in hydrogen-bonded molecular crystals have been utilised in external stimuli responsive reversible gas-induced gate opening and molecular adsorption/desorption behavior. These dynamics of the polar structural units are responsible for the dielectric measurements. The H+ dynamics are formed from ferroelectrics and H+ conductors, while the dynamic M+ motions of Li+ and Na+ involve ionic conductors and coupling to the conduction electrons. In n-type organic semiconductors, the crystal lattices are modulated by replacing M+ cations, with cations such as Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+. The use of polar rotator or inversion structures such as alkyl amides, m-fluoroanilinium cations, and bowl-shaped trithiasumanene π-cores enables the formation of ferroelectric molecular assemblies. The host-guest molecular systems of ESIPT fluorescent chromic molecules showed interesting molecular sensing properties using various bases, where the dynamic transformation of the crystal lattice and the molecular conformational change were coupled to each other.

Abstract
With prosperity, decay, and another spring, molecular ferroelectrics have passed a hundred years since Valasek first discovered ferroelectricity in the molecular compound Rochelle salt. Recently, the proposal of ferroelectrochemistry has injected new vigor into this century-old research field. It should be highlighted that piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique, as a non-destructive imaging and manipulation method for ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, can significantly speed up the design rate of molecular ferroelectrics as well as enhance the ferroelectric and piezoelectric performances relying on domain engineering. Herein, we provide a brief review of the contribution of the PFM technique toward assisting the design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics. Relying on the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crystallography, together with other physical characteristics such as domain switching and piezoelectricity, we believe that the PFM technique can be effectively applied to assist the design of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics equipped with multifunctionality, and thereby facilitate their practical utilization in optics, electronics, magnetics, thermotics, and mechanics among others.

Abstract
Through a functional unit-transmutation strategy, a fatigue-free layered hybrid perovskite ferroelectric (C6 H5 CH2 NH3 )2 CsPb2 Br7 (BCPB) has been developed, which demonstrates stable spontaneous polarization (Ps ) of 6.5 μC cm-2 and high Curie temperature up to 425 K. Meanwhile, BCPB shows splendid bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) properties with noticeable zero-bias photocurrent density (5 μA cm-2 ), and high on/off switching ratio of current (over 3×105 ); these merits even overmatch the most known ferroelectric semiconductor BiFeO3 . The unique structure with self-regulated net electrical charged layers gives rise to the fatigue-free feature of Ps and BPVE (no significant fatigue after 108 polarity switching cycles), promoting the potential applications of BCPB in photovoltaic non-volatile memories. This work offers an efficient approach for exploring fatigue-free semiconducting ferroelectrics as well as excavates their further applications in next-generation electronic devices.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have recently gained tremendous interest because of their unique features in contrast to three-dimensional counterparts and traditional 2D materials. However, although some 2D HOIP ferroelectrics have been achieved, the issue of toxic Pb and uniaxial nature impede their further application. Herein, for the first time, we report a lead-free 2D HOIP multiaxial ferroelectric, [3,3-difluorocyclobutylammonium]2CuCl4 (1), which shows four ferroelectric axes and eight equivalent polarization directions, more than those of the other 2D HOIP ferroelectrics and even the inorganic perovskite ferroelectric BaTiO3 (three ferroelectric axes and six equivalent polarization directions). 1 also features a high Curie temperature of 380 K and exhibits remarkable thermochromism of color change from green-yellow to dark brown. To our knowledge, 1 is the first multiaxial lead-free 2D HOIP ferroelectric. This work sheds light on the exploration of better lead-free 2D HOIP ferroelectrics.

Abstract
The low-temperature processability of molecular ferroelectric (FE) crystals makes them a potential alternative for perovskite oxide-based ferroelectric thin films. Quinuclidinium perrhenate (HQReO4) is one such molecular FE crystal that exhibits ferroelectricity when crystallized in an intermediate temperature phase (ITP). However, bulk HQReO4 crystals exhibit ferroelectricity only for a narrow temperature window (22 K), above and below which the polar phase transforms to a non-FE phase. The FE phase or ITP of HQReO4 should be stabilized in a much wider temperature range for practical applications. Here, to stabilize the FE phase (ITP) in a wider temperature range, highly oriented thin films of HQReO4 were prepared using a simple solution process. A slow evaporation method was adapted for drying the HQReO4 thin films to control the morphology and the temperature window. The temperature window of the intermediate temperature FE phase was successfully widened up to 35 K by merely varying the film drying temperature between 333 and 353 K. The strategy of stabilizing the FE phase in a wider temperature range can be adapted to other molecular FE materials to realize flexible electronic devices.

Abstract
Molecular perovskite materials have recently attracted extraordinary interest from the academic community owing to their excellent multifunctional properties. Nevertheless, although massive efforts have been made, molecular ferroelastics with three-dimensional (3D) perovskite structures are still rare. Herein, we report two 3D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites [(2-hydroxy-propyl)-tripropyl-ammonium][Mn(dca)3] (1) and [(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-tripropyl-ammonium] [Mn(dca)3] (2) [dca = dicyanamide, N(CN)2]. The different position of the chiral center results in a tremendous difference in the properties. Compound 1 displays only one phase transition; however, intriguingly, 2 has three phase transitions and represents ferroelastic behavior with exceptional two-step switching of quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first molecular ferroelastic with two-step switching of quadratic NLO properties. The results demonstrate that the molecular chiral design works, and this finding opens up a new avenue to designing multifunctional molecular perovskite materials.

Abstract
A high transition temperature (Tc ) is essential for the practical application of ferroelectrics as electronic devices under extreme thermal conditions in the aerospace, automotive, and energy industries. In recent decades, the isotope effect and strain engineering are found to effectively modulate Tc ; however, these strategies are limited to certain systems. Developing simple, universal, and practical methods to improve Tc has become an imminent challenge for expanding the applications of ferroelectrics. Here, by adopting a molecular design strategy involving H/F substitution on an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (1-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane)CdCl3 at a Tc of 190 K, the successful synthesis of a multiaxial, ferroelectric hybrid perovskite (4-fluoro-1-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane)CdCl3 is reported, which demonstrates a large spontaneous polarization of 11.2 µC cm-2 (greater than that of polyvinylidene difluoride) and a Tc of 419 K (greater than that of BaTiO3 ). This temperature enhancement (229 K) is the largest reported for molecular ferroelectrics, far exceeding the reported enhancements induced by the isotope effect and other techniques. This pioneering technique provides an effective and universal method for improving Tc in ferroelectrics and represents an important step toward the development of high-performance ferroelectric technology.

Abstract
The crystal structures of three phases of [(C2H5)4N][ReS4] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at different temperatures. The title compound, tetraethylammonium tetrathiorhenate, [(C2H5)4N][ReS4], has, at room temperature, a disordered structure in the space group P63mc (Z = 2, α-phase). A phase transition to the monoclinic space group P21 (Z = 2, γ-phase) at 285 K leads to a pseudo-merohedral twin. The high deviation from the hexagonal metric causes split reflections. However, the different orientations could not be separated, but were integrated using a large integration box. Rapid cooling to 110–170 K produces a metastable β-phase (P63, Z = 18) in addition to the γ-phase. All crystals of the β-phase are contaminated with the γ-phase. Additionally, the crystals of the β-phase are merohedrally twinned. In contrast to the α-phase, the β- and γ-phases do not show disorder.

Abstract
Molecular ferroelectrics have displayed a promising future since they are light-weight, flexible, environmentally friendly and easily synthesized, compared to traditional inorganic ferroelectrics. However, how to precisely design a molecular ferroelectric from a non-ferroelectric phase transition molecular system is still a great challenge. Here we designed and constructed a molecular ferroelectric by double regulation of the anion and cation in a simple crown ether clathrate, 4, [K(18-crown-6)]+ [PF6 ]- . By replacing K+ and PF6 - with H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- respectively, we obtained a new molecular ferroelectric [H3 O(18-crown-6)]+ [FeCl4 ]- , 1. Compound 1 undergoes a para-ferroelectric phase transition near 350 K with symmetry change from P21/n to the Pmc21 space group. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis suggests that the phase transition was mainly triggered by the displacement motion of H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- ions and twist motion of 18-crown-6 molecule. Strikingly, compound 1 shows high a Curie temperature (350 K), ultra-strong second harmonic generation signals (nearly 8 times of KDP), remarkable dielectric switching effect and large spontaneous polarization. We believe that this research will pave the way to design and build high-quality molecular ferroelectrics as well as their application in smart materials.

Abstract
Although the first ferroelectric discovered in 1920 is Rochelle salt, a typical molecular ferroelectric, the front-runners that have been extensively studied and widely used in diverse applications, such as memory elements, capacitors, sensors, and actuators, are inorganic ferroelectrics with excellent electrical, mechanical, and optical properties. With the increased concerns about the environment, energy, and cost, molecular ferroelectrics are becoming promising supplements for inorganic ferroelectrics. The unique advantages of high structural tunability and homochirality, which are unavailable in their inorganic counterparts, make molecular systems a good platform for manipulating ferroelectricity. Remarkably, based on the Neumann's principle and the Curie symmetry principle defining the group-to-subgroup relationship, we have found some outstanding high-temperature molecular ferroelectrics, like diisopropylammonium bromide (DIPAB) with a large spontaneous polarization up to 23 μC/cm2 ( Fu, D. W.; et al. Science 2013 , 339 , 425 ). However, their application potential is severely limited by the uniaxial nature, leading to major issues in finding proper substrates for thin-film growth and achieving high thin-film performance. Inspired by the commercialized inorganic ferroelectrics like Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT), where the multiaxial nature contributes greatly to the optimized ferroelectric and piezoelectric performance, developing high-temperature multiaxial molecular ferroelectrics is an imminent task. In this Account, we review our recent research progress on the targeted design of multiaxial molecular ferroelectrics. We first propose the "quasi-spherical theory", a phenomenological theory based on the Curie symmetry principle, to modify the spherical cations to a low-symmetric quasi-spherical geometry for acquiring the highly symmetric paraelectric phase and the polar ferroelectric phase of multiaxial ferroelectrics simultaneously. Besides the sizes and weights of the cation and anion, the intermolecular interactions are particularly crucial for decelerating the molecular rotation at low temperature to reasonably induce ferroelectricity. It means that the momentums of the cation and anion should be matched, so we describe the "momentum matching theory". In particular, introducing homochirality, a superiority of molecular materials over the inorganic ones, was demonstrated as an effective approach to increase the incidence of ferroelectric crystal structures. Thanks to the striking chemical variability and structure-property flexibility of molecular materials, our research efforts outlined in this Account have led to and will further motivate the richness and the application exploration of high-temperature, high-performance multiaxial molecular ferroelectrics, along with the implementation and perfection of the targeted design strategies.

Abstract
Hybrid perovskite materials are famous for their great application potential in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Among them, lead-iodide-based perovskites receive great attention because of their good optical absorption ability and excellent electrical transport properties. Although many believe the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect (FEPV) plays a crucial role for the high conversion efficiency, the ferroelectricity in CH3 NH3 PbI3 is still under debate, and obtaining ferroelectric lead iodide perovskites is still challenging. In order to avoid the randomness and blindness in the conventional method of searching for perovskite ferroelectrics, a design strategy of fluorine modification is developed. As a demonstration, a nonpolar lead iodide perovskite is modified and a new 2D fluorinated layered hybrid perovskite material of (4,4-difluorocyclohexylammonium)2 PbI4 , 1, is obtained, which possesses clear ferroelectricity with controllable spontaneous polarization. The direct bandgap of 2.38 eV with strong photoluminescence also guarantees the direct observation of polarization-induced FEPV. More importantly, the 2D structure and fluorination are also expected to achieve both good stability and charge transport properties. 1 is not only a 2D fluorinated lead iodide perovskite with confirmed ferroelectricity, but also a great platform for studying the effect of ferroelectricity and FEPV in the context of lead halide perovskite solar cells and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Molecular ferroelectric crystals have attracted growing interest as potential alternatives to conventional lead-based ceramic ferroelectrics. We have recently discovered that a class of compounds known as plastic crystals can show multiaxial ferroelectricity, which allows ferroelectric performance even in polycrystalline forms. Here, we report new plastic/ferroelectric ionic molecular crystals that exhibit remarkably small coercive electric fields at room temperature. The easily switchable ferroelectric polarization enables low-voltage switching operations and high-frequency performance. Such ferroelectric crystals can be readily processed into bulk polycrystalline forms with desired shapes that are characterized by unprecedentedly high pyroelectric figures of merit and large piezoelectricity. These multifunctional molecular crystals represent highly attractive prospects for device elements with a diverse range of applications, which will significantly boost the development of molecular ferroelectric crystals.

Abstract
Piezoelectric materials produce electricity when strained, making them ideal for different types of sensing applications. The most effective piezoelectric materials are ceramic solid solutions in which the piezoelectric effect is optimized at what are termed morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs). Ceramics are not ideal for a variety of applications owing to some of their mechanical properties. We synthesized piezoelectric materials from a molecular perovskite (TMFM)x(TMCM)1–xCdCl3 solid solution (TMFM, trimethylfluoromethyl ammonium; TMCM, trimethylchloromethyl ammonium, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1), in which the MPB exists between monoclinic and hexagonal phases. We found a composition for which the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is ~1540 picocoulombs per newton, comparable to high-performance piezoelectric ceramics. The material has potential applications for wearable piezoelectric devices.
