Conformational Switching of HOCO Radical: Selective Vibrational Excitation and Hydrogen-Atom Tunneling

Hydrogen Tunneling Exhibiting Unexpectedly Small Primary Kinetic Isotope Effects

Probing quantum mechanical tunneling (QMT) in chemical reactions is crucial to understanding and developing new transformations. Primary H/D kinetic isotopic effects (KIEs) beyond the semiclassical maximum values of 7-10 (room temperature) are commonly used to assess substantial QMT contributions in one-step hydrogen transfer reactions, because of the much greater QMT probability of protium vs. deuterium. Nevertheless, we report here the discovery of a reaction model occurring exclusively by H-atom QMT with residual primary H/D KIEs. 2-Hydroxyphenylnitrene, generated in N2 matrix, was found to isomerize to an imino-ketone via sequential (domino) QMT involving anti to syn OH-rotamerization (rate determining step) and [1,4]-H shift reactions. These sequential QMT transformations were also observed in the OD-deuterated sample, and unexpected primary H/D KIEs between 3 and 4 were measured at 3 to 20 K. Analogous residual primary H/D KIEs were found in the anti to syn OH-rotamerization QMT of 2-cyanophenol in a N2 matrix. Evidence strongly indicates that these intriguing isotope-insensitive QMT reactivities arise due to the solvation effects of the N2 matrix medium, putatively through coupling with the moving H/D tunneling particle. Should a similar scenario be extrapolated to conventional solution conditions, then QMT may have been overlooked in many chemical reactions.

Hydrogen-Bonded Complex of the Parent Phosphinidene

The diatomic molecule PH is very reactive, and it serves as the parent compound for phosphinidenes featuring a monovalent phosphorus atom. Herein, we report the characterization and reactivity of a rare hydrogen-bonded complex of PH. Specifically, the molecular complex between PH and HCl has been generated by photolysis of chlorophosphine (H2PCl) at 254 nm in a solid Ar-matrix at 10 K. The IR spectrum of the complex HP⋅⋅⋅HCl and quantum chemical calculations at the UCCSD(T)-F12a/haTZ level consistently prove that the phosphorus atom acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor with a binding energy (D0) of -0.6 kcal mol-1. In line with the observed absorption at 341 nm for the binary complex, the triplet phosphinidene PH undergoes prototype H-Cl bond insertion by reformation of H2PCl upon photoexcitation at 365 nm. However, this hydrogen-bonded complex is unstable in the presence of N2 and HCl, as both molecules prefers stronger interactions with HCl than PH in the observed complexes HP⋅⋅⋅HCl⋅⋅⋅N2 and HP⋅⋅⋅2HCl.

Astrochemically Relevant Radicals and Radical-Molecule Complexes: A New Insight from Matrix Isolation

The reactive open-shell species play a very important role in the radiation-induced molecular evolution occurring in the cold areas of space and presumably leading to the formation of biologically relevant molecules. This review presents an insight into the mechanism of such processes coming from matrix isolation studies with a main focus on the experimental and theoretical studies performed in the author's laboratory during the past decade. The radicals and radical cations produced from astrochemically relevant molecules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Small organic radicals containing C, O, and N atoms are considered in view of their possible role in the formation of complex organic molecules (COMs) in space, and a comparison with earlier results is given. In addition, the radical-molecule complexes generated from isolated intermolecular complexes in matrices are discussed in connection with their model significance as the building blocks for COMs formed under the conditions of extremely restricted molecular mobility at cryogenic temperatures.

Ultraviolet Photodissociation of Proteinogenic Amino Acids

The ultraviolet photochemistry of the amino acids glycine, leucine, proline, and serine in their neutral forms was investigated using parahydrogen matrix-isolation spectroscopy. Irradiation by 213 nm light destroys the chirality of all three chiral amino acids as a result of the α-carbonyl C-C bond cleavage and hydrocarboxyl (HOCO) radical production. The temporal behavior of the Fourier-transform infrared spectra revealed that HOCO radicals rapidly reach a steady state, which occurs predominantly due to photodissociation of HOCO into CO + OH or CO₂ + H. In glycine and leucine, the amine radicals generated by the α-carbonyl C-C bond cleavage rapidly undergo hydrogen elimination to yield methanimine and 3-methylbutane-1-imine, respectively. Breaking of the α-carbonyl C-C bond in proline appeared to yield 1-pyrroline, although due to its weak absorption it remains unconfirmed. In serine, additional products were formaldehyde and E/Z ethanimine. The present study shows that the direct production of HOCO previously observed in α-alanine generalizes to other amino acids of varying structure. It also revealed a tendency for amino acid photolysis to form imines rather than amine radicals. HOCO should be useful in the search for amino acids in interstellar space, particularly in combination with simple imine molecules.

Hydrogen-Bonded π Complexes between Phosphaethyne and Hydrogen Chloride

The highly labile complexes between phosphaethyne (HCP) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) with 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries have been generated in Ar and N₂ matrices at 10 K through laser photolysis of the molecular precursors 1-chlorophosphaethene (CH₂PCl) and dichloromethylphosphine (CH₃PCl₂), respectively. The IR spectrum of the 1:1 complex suggests the preference of a single "T-shaped" structure in which HCl acts as the hydrogen donor that interacts with the electron-rich C≡P triple bond. In contrast, three isomeric structures for the 1:2 complex bearing a core structure of the "T-shaped" 1:1 complex are present in the matrix. The spectroscopic identification of these rare HCP π-electron complexes is supported by D-isotope labeling and the quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level of theory.

Unraveling sulfur chemistry in interstellar carbon oxide ices

Formyl radical (HCO•) and hydroxycarbonyl radical (HOCO•) are versatile building blocks in the formation of biorelevant complex organic molecules (COMs) in interstellar medium. Understanding the chemical pathways for the formation of HCO• and HOCO• starting with primordial substances (e.g., CO and CO2) is of vital importance in building the complex network of prebiotic chemistry. Here, we report the efficient formation of HCO• and HOCO• in the photochemistry of hydroxidooxidosulfur radical (HOSO•)–a key intermediate in SO2 photochemistry–in interstellar analogous ices of CO and CO2 at 16 K through hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions. Specifically, 266 nm laser photolysis of HOSO• embedded in solid CO ice yields the elusive hydrogen‑bonded complexes HCO•···SO2 and HOCO•···SO, and the latter undergoes subsequent HAT to furnish CO2···HOS• under the irradiation conditions. Similar photo-induced HAT of HOSO• in solid CO2 ice leads to the formation of HOCO•···SO2. The HAT reactions of HOSO• in astronomical CO and CO2 ices by forming reactive acyl radicals may contribute to understanding the interplay between the sulfur and carbon ice-grain chemistry in cold molecular clouds and also in the planetary atmospheric chemistry.

Curtius-Type Rearrangement of Sulfinyl Azides: A Matrix Isolation and Computational Study

The highly unstable methyl sulfinyl azide, CH₃S(O)N₃, has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. In the gas phase, CH₃S(O)N₃ decomposes quickly at room temperature (300 K) with an estimated half-life (t_1/2) of 7 min. Upon irradiation at 266 nm in cryogenic Ar (10 K) and Ne (3 K) matrices, the azide extrudes molecular nitrogen by yielding the novel sulfinyl nitrene intermediate CH₃S(O)N in the closed-shell singlet ground state, which has been characterized with matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Prolonged irradiation at 266 nm causes Curtius rearrangement of the nitrene to form N-sulfinylamine CH₃NSO and S-nitrosothiol CH₃SNO. By high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) at 800 K, CH₃S(O)N₃ also decomposes and furnishes CH₃S(O)N with minor fragmentation products HNSO and CH₂ in the gas phase. A similar photo-induced Curtius-type rearrangement of trifluoromethyl sulfinyl azide CF₃S(O)N₃ to CF₃NSO and CF₃SNO has also been observed in matrices. According to the theoretical calculations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G (3df,3pd) level of theory, the rearrangement of CH₃S(O)N₃ prefers a stepwise pathway by initial formation of the nitrene intermediate CH₃S(O)N. In line with the thermal persistence of CH₃S(O)N in the gas phase, the barriers for its subsequent rearrangement are higher than 30 kcal mol^-1.

Full-dimensional quantum mechanical calculations for the tunneling behavior of HOCO dissociation to H + CO2

The tunneling behavior during HOCO dissociation to H + CO₂ was investigated by full-dimensional quantum mechanical calculations based on an accurate global potential energy surface. The tunneling lifetimes for the low-lying 1500 vibrational states were calculated using the low-storage filter diagonalization method after a 1 million-step Chebyshev propagation. In the calculated energy range, the lifetimes of different vibrational states with similar energy are found to differ by 3-4 orders of magnitude, and the lower limit for these tunneling lifetimes is consistent with the experimental results reported by Continetti et al. For the given vibrational progressions, the lifetime of the vibrational states decreases with the increasing energy level, which is consistent with the results of 1D simulation calculations reported by Bowman, but the declining curve obviously fluctuates, and the declining slope is significantly different from that obtained by 1D simulation. Due to a difference in the effective barrier width, the mode-specific behavior of the tunneling effect is manifested in that the O-C-O' and H-O-C bend modes lead to the largest enhancement and an inhibitory effect on the tunneling process, respectively.

Spectroscopic Identification of the Heterocumulenic Isocyanatoborane Radical HBNCO

The highly elusive isocyanatoborane radical HBNCO has been generated by the reaction of laser-ablated boron atoms with HNCO and also by the light-induced chemical transformation of the hydrogen-bonded molecule-radical complex BNH···CO in solid neon matrix. IR spectroscopic and theoretical studies indicate that the HBNCO radical possesses a quasilinear B═N═C═O heterocumulenic structure with the unpaired electron mainly located at the boron atom. This is in sharp contrast to the bonding properties of the isoelectronic analogues HCCCO and NCCO, in which the unpaired electron is located at the terminal CO moiety.

IR-induced and tunneling reactions in cryogenic matrices: the (incomplete) story of a successful endeavor

In this article, IR-induced and tunneling-driven reactions observed in cryogenic matrices are described in a historical perspective, the entangling of the two types of processes being highlighted. The story of this still ongoing fascinating scientific endeavor is presented here following closely our own involvement in the field for more than 30 years, and thus focuses mostly on our work. It is, because of this reason, also an incomplete story. Nevertheless, it considers a large range of examples, from very selective IR-induced conformational isomerizations to IR-induced bond-breaking/bond-forming reactions and successful observations of rare heavy atom tunneling processes. As a whole, this article provides a rather general overview of the major progress achieved in the field.

Hydrocarboxyl Radical as a Product of α-Alanine Ultraviolet Photolysis

UV photodissociation of α-alanine was studied by parahydrogen matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. The temporal behavior of Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that UV irradiation at 213 nm yielded the HOCO radical as a direct photoproduct from the S₂ excited state. The concentration of HOCO quickly approached a steady state due to secondary photodissociation of HOCO to produce CO₂ + H or CO + OH. On the other hand, no photoproducts were detected by S₁ excitation at 266 nm. Irradiation of fully deuterated α-alanine at 213 nm yielded ∼2 times more cis-DOCO radicals than the lower energy isomer trans-DOCO, indicating that the conformation of the hydroxyl group is fairly well-preserved upon photodissociation of α-alanine. The present study suggests that HOCO may be a good tracer species in the search for amino acids in interstellar space.

Inducing molecular reactions by selective vibrational excitation of a remote antenna with near-infrared light

We demonstrate here that selective vibrational excitation of a moiety, remotely attached in relation to the molecular reaction site, might offer a generalized strategy for inducing bond-breaking/bond-forming reactions with exquisite precision. As a proof-of-principle, the electrocyclic ring-expansion of a benzazirine to a ketenimine was induced, in a cryogenic matrix, by near-IR light tuned at the overtone stretching frequency of its OH remote antenna. This accomplishment paves the way for harnessing IR vibrational excitation as a tool to guide a variety of molecular structure manipulations in an exceptional highly-selective manner.

Vibrational spectrum and photochemistry of phosphaketene HPCO

The vibrational spectra of the simplest phosphaketene HPCO and its isotopologue DPCO in solid Ar-matrices at 12.0 K have been analyzed with the aid of the computations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level using configuration-selective vibrational configuration interaction (VCI). In addition to the four IR fundamentals, four overtone and ten combination bands have been unambiguously identified. Furthermore, the photochemistry of HPCO in the matrix has been investigated for the first time. Upon UV-light irradiation (365 or 266 nm), CO-elimination occurs by forming the parent phosphinidene HP that can be trapped by ˙NO to yield the elusive phosphinimine-N-oxyl radical HPNO˙. In contrast, an excimer laser (193 nm) irradiation of HPCO causes additional decomposition to H˙ and ˙PCO with concomitant formation of the long-sought phosphaethyne HOCP.

Spectroscopic characterization and photochemistry of the vinylsulfinyl radical

The simplest α,β-unsaturated sulfinyl radical CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ has been generated in the gas phase by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of sulfoxide CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)S(O)CF3 at ca. 800 °C. Two planar cis and trans conformers of CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ were isolated in cryogenic matrixes (N2, Ne, and Ar) and characterized with IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. In addition to the photo-induced cis ⇋ trans conformational interconversion, CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ displays complex photochemistry. Upon irradiation with a purple light LED (400 nm), CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ isomerizes to novel radicals CH3SCO˙, ˙CH2SC(O)H, and ˙CH2C(O)SH with concomitant dissociation to a caged molecular complex CH3S˙CO. Subsequent UV-laser (266 nm) irradiation causes fragmentation to ˙CH3/OCS and additional formation of an elusive carbonyl radical CH3C(O)S˙, which rearranges to ˙CH2C(O)SH upon further UV-light irradiation (365 nm). The vibrational data and bonding analysis of the two conformers of CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ suggest that both are floppy radicals in which the unpaired electron conjugates with the vicinal π(C[double bond, length as m-dash]C) bond, leading to significant contribution of the canonical resonance form of ˙CH2-C(H)SO. The mechanism for the isomerization of CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)SO˙ is discussed based on the observed intermediates along with a computed potential energy profile at the CCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory.

Dissociations of free radicals to generate protons, electrophiles or nucleophiles: role in DNA strand breaks

The concept behind the research described in this article was that of marrying the 'soft' methods of radical generation with the effectiveness and flexibility of nucleophile/electrophile synthetic procedures. Classic studies with pulse radiolysis and laser flash photolysis had shown that free radicals could be more acidic than their closed shell counterparts. QM computations harmonised with this and helped to define which radical centres and which structural types were most effective. Radicals based on the sulfonic acid moiety and on the Meldrum's acid moiety (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione) were found to be extreme examples in the superacid class. The ethyne unit could be used as a very effective spacer between the radical centre and the site of proton donation. The key factor in promoting acidity was understood to be the thermodynamic stabilisation of the conjugate anion-radicals released on deprotonation. Solvation played a key part in promoting this and theoretical microhydration studies provided notable support. A corollary was that heterolytic dissociations of free radicals to yield either electrophiles or nucleophiles were also enhanced relative to non-radical models. The most effective radical types for spontaneous releases of both these types of reagents were identified. Ethyne units were again effective as spacers. The enhancement of release of phosphate anions by adjacent radical centres was an important special case. Reactive oxygen species and also diradicals from endiyne antibiotics generate C4'-deoxyribose radicals from nucleotides. Radicals of these types spontaneously release phosphate and triphosphate and this is a contributor to DNA and RNA strand breaks.

Vibrationally Induced Conformational Isomerization and Tunneling in Pyrrole-2-Carboxylic Acid

The conformational behavior of carboxylic acids has attracted considerable attention, as it can be used as a gateway for the study of more complex phenomena. Here, we present an experimental and computational study of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (PCA) conformational space and the vibrational characterization of the compound by infrared spectroscopy. The possibility of promoting conformational transformations using selective vibrational excitation of the 2ν(OH) and 2ν(NH) stretching overtones is explored. Two conformers, exhibiting the cis configuration of the COOH group (O═C-O-H dihedral angle near 0°) and differing by the orientation of the carboxylic group with respect to the pyrrole ring (i.e., showing either a cis or a trans NCC═O arrangement), were found to coexist initially for the compound isolated in a cryogenic nitrogen matrix, in an 86:14 ratio, and were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. A third conformer, with the COOH group in the trans configuration, was produced, in situ, by narrowband near-infrared (NIR) excitation of the most stable PCA form (with a cis NCC═O moiety). The photogenerated PCA conformer was found to decay back to the most stable PCA form, by H-atom quantum mechanical tunneling, with a characteristic half-life time of ∼10 min in the nitrogen matrix at 10 K. Tunneling rates were theoretically estimated and compared for the observed isomerization of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid and for the structurally similar furan-2-carboxylic acid. This comparison showcases the effect of small modifications in the potential energy surface and the implications of quantum tunneling for the stability of short-living species.

Bond-Breaking/Bond-Forming Reactions by Vibrational Excitation: Infrared-Induced Bidirectional Tautomerization of Matrix-Isolated Thiotropolone

Infrared vibrational excitation is a promising approach for gaining exceptional control of chemical reactions, in ways that cannot be attained via thermal or electronic excitation. Here, we report an unprecedented example of a bond-breaking/bond-forming reaction by vibrational excitation under matrix isolation conditions. Thiotropolone monomers were isolated in cryogenic argon matrices and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and vibrational computations (harmonic and anharmonic). Narrowband near-infrared irradiations tuned at frequencies of first CH stretching overtone (5940 cm^-1) or combination modes (5980 cm^-1) of the OH tautomer, the sole form of the compound that exists in the as-deposited matrices, led to its conversion into the SH tautomer. The tautomerization in the reverse direction was achieved by vibrational excitation of the SH tautomer with irradiation at 5947 or 5994 cm^-1, corresponding to the frequencies of its CH stretching combination and overtone modes. This pioneer demonstration of bidirectional hydroxyl ↔ thiol tautomerization controlled by vibrational excitation creates prospects for new advances in vibrationally induced chemistry.

Hydrogen-Atom Tunneling in Metaphosphorous Acid

Metaphosphorous acid (HOPO), a key intermediate in phosphorus chemistry, has been generated in syn- and anti-conformations in the gas phase by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of a molecular precursor ethoxyphosphinidene oxide (EtOPO→C₂ H₄ +HOPO) at ca. 1000 K and subsequently trapped in an N₂ -matrix at 2.8 K. Unlike the two conformers of the nitrogen analogue HONO, the anti-conformer of HOPO undergoes spontaneous rotamerization at 2.8 K via hydrogen-atom tunneling (HAT) with noticeable kinetic isotope effects for H/D (>10⁴ for DOPO) and ¹⁶ O/¹⁸ O (1.19 for H¹⁸ OPO and 1.06 for HOP¹⁸ O) in N₂ -matrices.

Microhydration and the Enhanced Acidity of Free Radicals

Recent theoretical research employing a continuum solvent model predicted that radical centers would enhance the acidity (RED-shift) of certain proton-donor molecules. Microhydration studies employing a DFT method are reported here with the aim of establishing the effect of the solvent micro-structure on the acidity of radicals with and without RED-shifts. Microhydration cluster structures were obtained for carboxyl, carboxy-ethynyl, carboxy-methyl, and hydroperoxyl radicals. The numbers of water molecules needed to induce spontaneous ionization were determined. The hydration clusters formed primarily round the CO₂ units of the carboxylate-containing radicals. Only 4 or 5 water molecules were needed to induce ionization of carboxyl and carboxy-ethynyl radicals, thus corroborating their large RED-shifts.

Hydrogen-atom tunneling through a very high barrier; spontaneous thiol → thione conversion in thiourea isolated in low-temperature Ar, Ne, H2and D2matrices

Hydrogen-atom tunneling in thiourea involves breaking of the S–H chemical bond and the formation of a new N–H bond.
