Crystalline Supramolecular Gyroscope with a Water Molecule as an Ultrasmall Polar Rotator Modulated by Charge-Assisted Hydrogen Bonds

A confinement-regulated (H3C-NH3)+ ion as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, rotational energy barrier analysis, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric response, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we report a new crystalline supramolecular rotor (CH3NH3)(18-crown-6)[CuCl3], in which the (H3C-NH3)+ ion functions as a smallest dual-wheel rotator showing bisected rotation dynamics, while the host 18-crown-6 macrocycle behaves as a stator that is not strictly stationary. This study also provides a helpful insight into the dynamics of ubiquitous -CH3/-NH3 groups confined in organic or organic-inorganic hybrid solids.

Supramolecular crystals of Mn(15-crown-5)(MnCl4)(DMF) with dielectric phase transition, high quantum yield and phase transition-induced luminescence enhancement behavior

The supramolecular crystals, Mn(15-crown-5)(MnCl4)(DMF), (1; 15-crown-5 = 1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane), were synthesized via a self-assembly strategy under ambient conditions. Comprehensive characterization of the crystals involved microanalysis for C, H, and N elements, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The results reveal that 1 undergoes a two-step thermotropic and isostructural phase transition at around 217 K and 351 K upon heating. All three phases belong to the same space group (P212121) with analogous cell parameters. These two phase transitions primarily involve the thermally activated ring rotational dynamics of the 15-crown-5 molecule, with only the transition at ca. 351 K being associated with a dielectric anomaly. 1 exhibits intense luminescence with a peak at ∼600 nm and a high quantum yield of 68%. The mechanisms underlying this intense luminescence are likely linked to low-symmetry ligand fields. Additionally, 1 displays phase transition-induced luminescence enhancement behavior, and the possible mechanism is further discussed.

Molecular rotators anchored on a rod-like anionic coordination polymer adhered by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds

On the basis of variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature/frequency dielectric analysis, variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, here we present a new model of crystalline supramolecular rotor (i-PrNHMe2)[CdBr3], where a conformationally flexible near-spherical (i-PrNHMe2)+ cation functions as a rotator and a rod-like anionic coordination polymer {[CdBr3]-}∞ acts as the stator, and the adhesion of them is realized by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.

The Synthesis, Structure, and Dielectric Properties of a One-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bonded DL-α-Phenylglycine Supramolecular Crown-Ether-Based Inclusion Compound

A novel hydrogen-bonded supramolecular crown-ether-based inclusion compound, [(DL-α-Phenylglycine)(18-crown-6)]+[(CoCl4)0.5]-(1), was obtained via evaporation in a methanolic solution at room temperature using DL-α-phenylglycine, 18-crown-6, cobalt chloride (CoCl2), and hydrochloric acid. Its structure, thermal properties, and electrical properties were characterized via elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and variable temperature-variable frequency dielectric constant testing. The compound was a monoclinic crystal system in the C2 space group at low temperature (100 K) and room temperature (293 K). Analysis of the single crystal structure showed that [(CoCl4)0.5]- presented an edge-sharing ditetrahedral structure in the disordered state, while the protonated DL-α-phenylglycine molecule in the disordered state and intramolecular hydroxyl group (-OH) underwent dynamic rocking, causing a significant stretching motion of the O-H···Cl-type one-dimensional hydrogen bond chain. This resulted in dielectric anomalies in the three axes of the crystal, thus showing significant dielectric anisotropy.

Structures and Supramolecular Properties of Inclusion Complexes of Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocages with Fullerene Guests and Their Dynamic Motion as Molecular Gyroscopes

Three derivatives of macrocyclic cage compounds consisting of diarylanthracene and triptycene units were synthesized. These nanocages formed host-guest complexes with C₆₀ and other fullerene guests as confirmed by ¹ H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constant of the mesityl and 2,4,6-tributoxyphenyl derivatives with C₆₀ was determined to be 2.2 × 10⁴  L mol^-1 , which was larger than that of the pentafluorophenyl derivative. Direct experimental evidence of the complexation was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis: the guest C₆₀ molecule was included in the cavity via multipoint CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. Dynamic disorders of the included C₆₀ molecule in variable-temperature X-ray analysis indicated uniaxial motion, such as gyroscopic motion. The unique dynamic behavior of the spherical C₆₀ rotor anchored by the cage stator via CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the crystal, as well as substituent effects on the association properties, are discussed with the aid of DFT calculations.

Two-step thermotropic phase transition and dielectric relaxation in 1D supramolecular lead iodide perovskite [NH4@18-crown ether]PbI3

The supramolecular lead iodide perovskite crystals, {[NH₄(18-crown-6)]PbI₃}_∞ (1), (18-crown-6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane), was successfully achieved by a facile solvent evaporation strategy using a DMF solution containing equal molar quantities of PbI₂, NH₄I and 18-crown-6. The supramolecular perovskite was characterized by microanalysis for C, H and N elements, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. DSC measurements demonstrated that 1 experiences a two-step thermotropic phase transition around 333 K and 383 K, respectively. The phase transition is relevant to the disorder-order transformation of the 18-crown-6 molecule at ∼333 K, while both breaking-symmetry and ordered-disordered transformation of the 18-crown-6 molecule occurred at ∼383 K. In addition, the sharp change of the PbI₆ coordination octahedron distortion degree plays a synergistic role in the two-step phase transition. The dielectric relaxation occurs above 243 K in 1 and is mainly attributed to the displacement of the NH₄⁺ ions relative to the ring of the 18-crown-6 molecule and {PbI₃}_∞ chain induced by an AC electrical field.

Zero-dimensional hybrid binuclear manganese chloride with thermally stable yellow emission

Photoluminescence (PL) thermal quenching of hybrid metal halides blocks their applications. Herein, a novel type of 0D hybrid metal halide, [Pb(C₁₂H₂₄O₆)Cl]₂[Mn₂Cl₆], with broad yellow emission and near-unity PL quantum yield is reported. Importantly, it preserves outstanding thermal stability up to 450 K.

Insights into the Molecular Dynamics of Quasi-Spherical (Chloromethyl)triethylammonium Confined in a Weakly Bound Ionic Cocrystal

Here, we report a weakly bound ionic cocrystal, (Et₃NCH₂Cl)₂[ZnCl₄], which undergoes a reversible structural phase transition owing to the switched molecular dynamics of the quasi-spherical (Et₃NCH₂Cl)⁺ cation from static to dynamic. Interestingly, a unique rolling and moving mechanism is uncovered for such a cation in the high-temperature phase, where its two methylene groups exhibit different kinetic energy barriers. This study provides a meaningful insight into the solid-state molecular dynamics of large-size quasi-spherical molecules that contain both a rigid core and flexible shell.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

[(Histamine)(18-crown-6)2][BF4]2 is a high-temperature piezoelectric

We discovered that [(histamine)(18-crown-6)₂][BF₄]₂ is a high-temperature host-guest inclusion complex that presents decent piezoelectric properties (d₃₃ = 5 pC/N), undergoes a phase transition at 406 K, and also possesses potential ferroelectricity. This work provides a new idea for constructing host-guest inclusion piezoelectrics.

Dual-channel control of ferroelastic domains in a host–guest inclusion compound

By replacing [PF6]− with the larger [TFSA]−, the phase transition temperature is increased from 305 K to 342 K in a host–guest inclusion ferroelastic crystal, [(3,4-DFA)(18-crown-6)][TFSA], which can realize dual-channel (thermal and stress) control of ferroelastic domains.

Slip/Stick Viscosity Models of Nanoconfined Liquids: Solvent-Dependent Rotation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Artificial molecular machines are expected to operate in environments where viscous forces impact molecules significantly. With that, it is well-known that solvent behaviors dramatically change upon confinement into limited spaces as compared to bulk solvents. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of an amphidynamic metal-organic framework with pillars consisting of ²H-labeled dialkynyltriptycene and dialkynylphenylene barrierless rotators that operate as NMR sensors for solvent viscosity. Using line-shape analysis of quadrupolar spin echo spectra we showed that solvents such as dimethylformamide, diethylformamide, 2-octanone, bromobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, and benzonitrile slow down their Brownian rotational motion (10³-10⁶ s^-1) to values consistent with confined viscosity values (ca. 10⁰-10³ pa s) that are up to 10000 greater than those in the bulk. Magic angle spinning assisted ¹H T₂ measurements of included solvents revealed relaxation times of approximately 100-1000 ms over the explored temperature ranges, and MAS-assisted ¹H T₁ measurements of included solvents suggested a much lower activation energy for rotational dynamics as compared to those measured by the rotating pillars using ²H measurements. Finally, translational diffusion measurements of DMF using pulsed-field gradient methods revealed intermediate dynamics for the translational motion of the solvent molecules in MOFs.

Solid solutions of flexible host-guest supramolecules for tuning molecular motion and phase transitions

By utilizing a supramolecular complex rather than an individual molecule as a deformable and elastic substitutional component, we put forward a solid-solution strategy and demonstrate an example of how two related yet non-isostructural crystalline host-guest compounds can form molecular solid solutions. Interestingly, such a strategy can effectively and continuously modulate the molecular motion and phase transition in them, as revealed by the variable-temperature/frequency dielectric responses.

Record Enhancement of Curie Temperature in Host-Guest Inclusion Ferroelectrics

Solid-state molecular rotor-type materials such as host-guest inclusion compounds are very desirable for the construction of molecular ferroelectrics. However, they usually have a low Curie temperature (T_c) and uniaxial nature, severely hindering their practical applications. Herein, by regulating the anion to control "momentum matching" in the crystal structure, we successfully designed a high-temperature multiaxial host-guest inclusion ferroelectric [(MeO-C₆H₄-NH₃)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] (MeO-C₆H₄-NH₃ = 4-methoxyanilinium, TFSA = bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)ammonium) with the Aizu notation of mmmFm. Compared to the parent uniaxial ferroelectric [(MeO-C₆H₄-NH₃)(18-crown-6)][BF₄] with a T_c of 127 K, the introduction of larger TFSA anions brings a lower crystal symmetry at room temperature and a higher energy barrier of molecular motions in phase transition, giving [(MeO-C₆H₄-NH₃)(18-crown-6)][TFSA] multiaxial ferroelectricity and a high T_c up to 415 K (above that of BaTiO₃). To our knowledge, such a record temperature enhancement of 288 K makes its T_c the highest among the reported crown-ether-based ferroelectrics, giving a wide working temperature range for applications in data storage, temperature sensing, actuation, and so on. This work will provide guidance and inspiration for designing high-T_c host-guest inclusion ferroelectrics.

Enhancing switchable dielectric property for crystalline supramolecular rotor compounds by adding polar components

Two new compounds were obtained by assembling the [(2-methoxy-5-nitro-anilinium)(18-crown-6)]+ cation with non-polar PF6- and polar SO3CF3- anions, respectively. Benefiting from its polar anion, the SO3CF3- compound reveals a more significant dielectric switching behaviour during phase transition, demonstrating an effective strategy to enhance the dielectric property by adding polar components.

A Rotorlike Supramolecular Assembly, {[K(18-crown-6)]PbI3}∞, with a Reversible Breaking-Symmetry Phase Transition near Room Temperature

A rotorlike supramolecular crystal, {[K(18-crown-6)]PbI₃}_∞, is composed of a linear [PbI₃]_∞ chain acting as a stator and [K(18-crown-6)]⁺ cations fastened to the [PbI₃]_∞ chain and K-I bond like rotators and axes, respectively. A reversible breaking-symmetry phase transition occurs at ∼305 K. Variable-temperature ¹H NMR spectra and dielectrics were used for the dynamic analysis of [K(18-crown-6)]⁺ cations in the crystal.

Anion-Regulated Molecular Rotor Crystal: The First Case of a Stator-Rotator Double Switch with Relaxation Behavior

Molecular rotational motion is crucial in artificial molecular machines and is expected to be very significant for the development of an electronic information molecular machine as mentioned in the 2016 Nobel Prize. However, controlling multiple motor modes is a huge challenge. Here, we report a case in which the structural phase transition effectively triggers multiple motor modes by regulating the rotational speed of the cation and/or anion. A novel switchable crystalline supramolecular rotor, [(cyclohexylammonium)(18-crown-6)] FSO₃ (1), exhibits prominent temperature-dependent double switching behavior at 157.9 and 389.1 K induced by the variation of the rotational speed of the FSO₃^- anion (which acts as a super miniature rotator) in response to temperature. Moreover, it exhibits significant relaxation behavior and excellent pyroelectric switch characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this might be the first discovery of the stator-rotator double switch with a relaxation effect, which could be a promising candidate for a slow/fast responsive double switch over a wide temperature range.

High-Temperature Reversible Phase-Transition Behavior, Switchable Dielectric and Second Harmonic Generation Response of Two Homochiral Crown Ether Clathrates

Crowning achievement: Two homochiral crown ether clathrates were synthesized which undergo high-temperature reversible phase transition. In addition, second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and abnormal dielectric property further confirm the reversible phase transitions and symmetry breaking behaviors of the structures.

Origin of the isotropic motion in crystalline molecular rotors with carbazole stators

Herein we report two crystalline molecular rotors 1 and 4 that show extremely narrow signals in deuterium solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Although this line shape is typically associated with fast-moving molecular components, our VT 2H NMR experiments, along with X-ray diffraction analyses and periodic DFT computations show that this spectroscopic feature can also be originated from low-frequency intramolecular rotations of the central phenylene with a cone angle of 54.7° that is attained by the cooperative motion of the entire structure that distorts the molecular axis to rotation. In contrast, two isomeric structures (2 and 3) do not show a noticeable intramolecular rotation, because their crystallographic arrays showed very restricting close contacts. Our findings clearly indicate that the multiple components and phase transitions in crystalline molecular machines can work in concert to achieve the desired motion.

Above Room Temperature Reversible Phase Transition Induces Distinct Dielectric and Nonlinear Optical Switching Response Behavior in Crown-Ether-Based Supramolecular Clathrate

Stimuli-responsive materials with coexisting nonlinear optical (NLO) and dielectric properties are technologically important, which enable simultaneous conversion of optoelectronic properties between different states under external stimuli. By rationally screening guest cations (C6H5NF2)+ in the crown-ether inclusion system, we synthesized a crown-ether supramolecular compound [(C6H5NF2)(18-crown-6)][PF6] (1). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition above room temperatures (305 K/292 K), with a thermal hysteresis of 13 K. Temperature-dependent dielectric and NLO measurements show that the compound exhibits two distinct switching response behaviors. Structural analysis indicates that the order–disorder change of the host molecule 18-crown-6 and the guest organic cation during the phase transition induces the dielectric and NLO switching behavior of the compound.

Dielectric Relaxation of Powdered Molecular Gyrotops Having a Thiophene Dioxide-diyl as a Dipolar Rotor

The dielectric properties of powdered molecular gyrotops with a thiophenedioxide-diyl are reported. Crystals without a solvent molecule show usual dielectric relaxation spectra due to orientation polarization of the dipolar rotor, while a crystal having ethanol as the crystalline solvent molecule showed novel temperature-dependent dielectric relaxation switching by crystal-to-crystal phase transition, which is induced by hydrogen-bonding interactions between thiophene dioxide and ethanol.

Dynamic Motion of Organic Ligands in Polar Layered Cobalt Phosphonates

By introducing the polar methoxy group into phenyl- or benzyl-phosphonate ligands, four cobalt phosphonates with layered structures are obtained, namely, [Co(4-mopp)(H₂ O)] (1), [Co(4-mobp)(H₂ O)] (2), [Co(3-mopp)(H₂ O)] (3), and [Co(3-mobp)(H₂ O)] (4), where 4- or 3-moppH₂ is (4- or 3-methoxyphenyl)phosphonic acid and 4- or 3-mobpH₂ is (4- or 3-methoxybenzyl)phosphonic acid. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 crystallize in the polar space groups Pmn2₁ or Pna2₁ , whereas compound 3 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P2₁ /n. The layer topologies in the four structures are similar and can be viewed as perovskite type, where the edge-sharing [Co₄ O₄ ] rhombi are capped by the PO₃ C groups. The phenyl and MeO groups in compounds 1-3 are heavily disordered, whereas that in 4 is ordered. Structural comparison based on the data at 296 and 123 K reveals distinct dynamic motion of the organic groups in compounds 1 and 2. The fluctuation of the polar MeO groups in these two compounds is confirmed by dielectric relaxation measurements. In contrast, the fluctuation of polar groups in compounds 3 and 4 is not evident. Interestingly, the dehydrated samples of 3 and 4 (i.e., 3-de and 4-de) exhibit one-step and two-step phase transitions associated with the motion of polar organic groups, as proven by DSC and dielectric measurements. The magnetic properties of compounds 1-4 are investigated, and strong antiferromagnetic interactions are found to mediate between the magnetic centers through μ-O(P) and O-P-O bridges.

Unusual high-temperature reversible phase transition containing dielectric and nonlinear optical switches in host-guest supramolecular crown ether clathrates

A novel high-temperature dielectric and quadratic nonlinear optical switching material, 3,4-difluoroanilinium 18-crown-6 perchlorate, was synthesized. It exhibits two successive structural phase transitions at 347 K and 240 K, respectively. Gradually increased SHG-active characteristics are also identified.

Molecular Dynamics, Phase Transition and Frequency-Tuned Dielectric Switch of an Ionic Co-Crystal

Dielectric switches that can be converted between high and low dielectric states by thermal stimuli have attracted much interest owing to their many potential applications. Currently one main drawback for practical application lies in the non-tunability of their switch temperatures (T_S ). We report here an ionic co-crystal (Me₃ NH)₄ [Ni(NCS)₆ ] that contains a multiply rotatable Me₃ NH⁺ ion and a solely rotatable one due to a more spacious supramolecular cage for the former one. This compound undergoes an isostructural order-disorder phase transition and it can function as a frequency-tuned dielectric switch with highly adjustable T_S , which is further revealed by the variable-temperature structure analyses and molecular dynamics simulations. In addition, the distinct arrangements and molecular dynamics of two coexisting Me₃ NH⁺ ions confined in different lattice spaces as well as the notable offset effect on the promoting/hindering of dipolar reorientation after dielectric transition provide a rarely observed but fairly good model for understanding and modulating the dipole motion in crystalline environment.

[(18-Crown-6)K][Fe(1)Cl(1)4 ]0.5 [Fe(2)Cl(2)4 ]0.5 : A Multifunctional Molecular Switch of Dielectric, Conductivity and Magnetic Properties

Multifunctional materials that exhibit different physical properties in a single phase have potential for use in multifunctional devices. Herein, we reported an organic-inorganic hybrid compound [(18-crown-6)K][Fe(1)Cl(1)₄ ]_0.5 [Fe(2)Cl(2)₄ ]_0.5 (1) by incorporating KCl and FeCl₃ into a 18-crown-6 molecule, which acts as a host of the six O atoms providing a lone pair of electrons to anchor the guest potassium cation, and [FeCl₄ ]^- as a counterion for charge balance to construct a complex salt. This salt exhibited a one-step reversible structural transformation giving two separate high and low temperature phases at 373 K, which was confirmed by systematic characterizations including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric, impedance, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Interestingly, the structural transformation was coupled to both hysteretic dielectric phase transition, conductivity switch and magnetic-phase transition at 373 K. This result gives an idea for designing a new type of phase-transition materials harboring technologically important magnetic, conductivity and dielectric properties.
