π-Conjugated Nanohoops: A New Generation of Curved Materials for Organic Electronics

Nanohoops, cyclic association of π-conjugated systems to form a hoop-shaped molecule, have been widely developed in the last 15 years. Beyond the synthetic challenge, the strong interest towards these molecules arises from their radially oriented π-orbitals, which provide singular properties to these fascinating structures. Thanks to their particular cylindrical arrangement, this new generation of curved molecules have been already used in many applications such as host-guest complexation, biosensing, bioimaging, solid-state emission and catalysis. However, their potential in organic electronics has only started to be explored. From the first incorporation as an emitter in a fluorescent organic light emitting diode (OLED), to the recent first incorporation as a host in phosphorescent OLEDs or as charge transporter in organic field-effect transistors and in organic photovoltaics, this field has shown important breakthroughs in recent years. These findings have revealed that curved materials can play a key role in the future and can even be more efficient than their linear counterparts. This can have important repercussions for the future of electronics. Time has now come to overview the different nanohoops used to date in electronic devices in order to stimulate the future molecular designs of functional materials based on these macrocycles.

On-Surface Covalent Synthesis of Carbon Nanomaterials by Harnessing Carbon gem-Polyhalides

The design of innovative carbon-based nanostructures stands at the forefront of both chemistry and materials science. In this context, π-conjugated compounds are of great interest due to their impact in a variety of fields, including optoelectronics, spintronics, energy storage, sensing and catalysis. Despite extensive research efforts, substantial knowledge gaps persist in the synthesis and characterization of new π-conjugated compounds with potential implications for science and technology. On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful discipline to overcome limitations associated with conventional solution chemistry methods, offering advanced tools to characterize the resulting nanomaterials. This review specifically highlights recent achievements in the utilization of molecular precursors incorporating carbon geminal (gem)-polyhalides as functional groups to guide the formation of π-conjugated 0D species, as well as 1D, quasi-1D π-conjugated polymers, and 2D nanoarchitectures. By delving into reaction pathways, novel structural designs, and the electronic, magnetic, and topological features of the resulting products, the review provides fundamental insights for a new generation of π-conjugated materials.

Tethered Helical Ladder-Type Aromatic Lactams

Tethered nonplanar aromatics (TNAs) make up an important class of nonplanar aromatic compounds showing unique features. However, the knowledge on the synthesis, structures, and properties of TNAs remains insufficient. In this work, a new type of TNAs, the tethered aromatic lactams, is synthesized via Pd-catalyzed consecutive intramolecular direct arylations. These molecules possess a helical ladder-type conjugated system of up to 13 fused rings. The overall yields ranged from 3.4 to 4.3%. The largest of the tethered aromatic lactams, 6L-Bu-C14, demonstrates a guest-adaptive hosting capability of TNAs for the first time. When binding fullerene guests, the cavity of 6L-Bu-C14 became more circular to better accommodate spherical fullerene molecules. The host-guest interaction is thoroughly studied by X-ray crystallography, theoretical calculations, fluorescence titration, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titration experiments. 6L-Bu-C14 shows stronger binding with C70 than with C60 due to the better convex-concave π-π interaction. P and M enantiomers of all tethered aromatic lactams show distinct and persistent chiroptical properties and demonstrate the potential of chiral TNAs as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters.

Generalized kekulenes and clarenes as novel families of cycloarenes: structures, stability, and spectroscopic properties

Cycloarenes constitute a captivating class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with unique structures and properties, but their synthesis represents a challenging task in organic chemistry. Kekulenes and edge-extended kekulenes as classic types of cycloarenes play an important role in the comprehension of π electron distribution, but their sparse molecular diversity considerably limits their further development and application. In this work, we propose two novel classes of cycloarenes, the generalized kekulenes and the clarenes. Using density functional theory, we carry out a comprehensive study of all possible isomers of the generalized kekulenes and clarenes with different sizes. By applying a simple Hückel model, we show that π delocalization plays a crucial role in determining the relative stability of isomers. We also discover that π-π stacking is commonly present in certain larger clarenes and provides a considerable additional stabilization effect, making the corresponding isomers the lowest-energy ones. Among all considered typical looped polyarenes, generalized kekulenes and/or clarenes are revealed to be the energetically most stable forms, suggesting that these novel cycloarenes proposed here would be viable targets for future synthetic work. The simulated 1H NMR spectra and UV-vis absorption spectra provide valuable information about the electronic and optoelectronic properties for the most stable generalized kekulene and clarene species and may support their identification in future synthesis and experimental characterization.

Enumeration, Nomenclature, and Stability Rules of Carbon Nanobelts

With recent breakthroughs and advances in synthetic chemistry, carbon nanobelts (CNBs) have become an emerging hot topic in chemistry and materials science. Owing to their unique molecular structures, CNBs have intriguing properties with applications in synthetic materials, host-guest chemistry, optoelectronics, and so on. Although a considerable number of CNBs with diverse forms have been synthesized, no systematic nomenclature is available yet for this important family of macrocycles. Moreover, little is known about the detailed isomerism of CNBs, which, in fact, exhibits greater complexity than that of carbon nanotubes. The copious variety of CNB isomers, along with the underlying structure-property relationships, bears fundamental relevance to the ongoing design and synthesis of novel nanobelts. In this paper, we propose an elegant approach to systematically enumerate, classify, and name all possible isomers of CNBs. Besides the simplest, standard CNBs defined by chiral indices (n, m), the nonstandard CNBs (n, m, l) involve an additional winding index l. Based on extensive quantum chemical calculations, we present a comprehensive study of the relative isomer stability of CNBs containing up to 30 rings. A simple Hückel-based model with a high predictive power reveals that the relative stability of standard CNBs is governed by the π stabilization and the strain destabilization induced by the cylindrical carbon framework, and the former effect prevails over the latter. For nonstandard CNBs, a third stability factor, the H···H repulsion in the benzo[c]phenanthrene-like motifs, is also shown to be important and can be incorporated into the simple quantitative model. In general, lower-energy CNB isomers have a larger HOMO-LUMO gap, suggesting that their thermodynamic stability coincides with kinetic stability. The most stable CNB isomers determined can be considered the optimal targets for future synthesis. These results lay an initial foundation and provide a useful theoretical tool for further research on CNBs and related analogues.

Solubilization of Carbon Nanobelts in Aqueous Solutions: Optical and Colloidal Properties

Carbon nanobelts (CNBs) correspond to carbon nanotube (CNT) segments and are insoluble in most common aqueous solutions, posing challenges across diverse applications. In this study, [12] CNB, which corresponds to a (6,6) CNT segment, was solubilized by aliphatic surfactant micelles through host-guest complexation, which was confirmed by comprehensive analyses involving spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, and molecular dynamics simulations. Through this solubilization, zero-Stokes shift emission of the CNB could occur, which could be ascribed to the symmetry-allowed transition. In contrast, CNB was insoluble in non-aliphatic surfactant solutions. The mechanism by which CNB is solubilized using aliphatic surfactants is completely distinct from that of the CNT dispersion mechanism. The present finding provides knowledge of the effectiveness of aliphatic compounds in solubilizing CNBs and their derivatives (carbon nanohoops), which show significant potential for various applications in aqueous systems, including biological applications.

Molecular Carbons: How Far Can We Go?

The creation and development of carbon nanomaterials promoted material science significantly. Bottom-up synthesis has emerged as an efficient strategy to synthesize atomically precise carbon nanomaterials, namely, molecular carbons, with various sizes and topologies. Different from the properties of the feasibly obtained mixture of carbon nanomaterials, numerous properties of single-component molecular carbons have been discovered owing to their well-defined structures as well as potential applications in various fields. This Perspective introduces recent advances in molecular carbons derived from fullerene, graphene, carbon nanotube, carbyne, graphyne, and Schwarzite carbon acquired with different synthesis strategies. By selecting a variety of representative examples, we elaborate on the relationship between molecular carbons and carbon nanomaterials. We hope these multiple points of view presented may facilitate further advancement in this field.

A step towards rational design of carbon nanobelts with tunable electronic properties

Belt-shaped aromatic compounds are among the most attractive classes of radial π-conjugated nanocarbon molecules with unique physical and chemical properties. In this work, we computationally studied a number of all-carbon and heteroatom-bridged nanobelts, as well as their inclusion complexes with fullerene C60. Our results provide a useful guide for modulating the electronic properties of the nanobelts. An in-depth analysis of the ground and excited state properties of their complexes has allowed us to establish structure-property relationships and propose simple principles for the design of nanobelts with improved electron-donating properties suitable for photovoltaic applications.

Infinitenes as the Most Stable Form of Cycloarenes: The Interplay among π Delocalization, Strain, and π-π Stacking

The recent successful preparation of infinitene has sparked widespread attention due to its aesthetic appeal and synthetic challenge. Spectroscopic measurements and follow-up computational investigations suggest that infinitene holds fundamental significance and potential applications in chiroptics, optoelectronics, asymmetric synthesis, and supramolecular chemistry. However, unlike other looped polyarenes enriched with sizes and shapes, the infinitene molecule seems, so far, the only known example of this fascinating new form of nanocarbons, whose further exploitation would be considerably limited because of the lack of molecular diversity. Here, we introduce a whole new family of generalized infinitenes with different sizes and topologies. Three types of infinitene structures are rationally designed by joining two units of coronene, kekulene, or their extended analogs. The constructed molecules of varying sizes, each with a large number of possible topoisomers, are systematically studied by DFT calculations. Comprehensive analysis using a simple energy decomposition model uncovers that the stability of infinitenes is governed by the interplay among π delocalization, steric strain, and π-π stacking. While the first two factors are crucial to the stability of smaller infinitenes, the latter is the primary stabilizing interaction for larger infinitenes. Most importantly, we show that larger-sized infinitenes are actually the energetically most favorable form among all known looped polyarenes; their substantial thermodynamic stability surpassing that of circulenes, various carbon nanobelts, and kekulene-like macrocycles renders them promising targets for synthesis. The simulated ¹H NMR, UV-vis, and circular dichroism spectra along with optical rotations for the most stable infinitene species may help their identification in future synthetic efforts.

Electrostatic Potential for Exploring Electron Delocalization in Infinitenes, Circulenes, and Nanobelts

The π-conjugation, aromaticity, and stability of the newly synthesized 12-infinitene and of other infinitenes comprising 8-, 10-, 14-, and 16-arene rings are investigated using density functional theory. The π-electron delocalization and aromatic character rooted in infinitenes are quantified in terms of molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) topology. Structurally, the infinitene bears a close resemblance of its helically twisted structure to the infinity symbol. The MESP topology shows that infinitene possesses an infinity-shaped delocalization of the electron density that streams over the fused benzenoid rings. The parameter ∑i=13Δλi, derived from the eigenvalues (λ_i) corresponding to the MESP minima, is used for quantifying the aromatic character of arene rings of infinitene. The structure, stability, and MESP topology features of 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-infinitenes are also compared with the corresponding isomeric circulenes and carbon nanobelts. Further, the strain in all such systems is evaluated by considering the respective isomeric planar benzenoid hydrocarbons as reference systems. The 12-infinitene turns out to be the most aromatic and the least strained among all the systems examined.

Saddle-shaped aza-nanographene with multiple odd-membered rings

A saddle-shaped aza-nanographene containing a central 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole (DHPP) has been prepared via a rationally designed four-step synthetic pathway encompassing intramolecular direct arylation, the Scholl reaction, and finally photo-induced radical cyclization. The target non-alternant, nitrogen-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) incorporates two abutting pentagons between four adjacent heptagons forming unique 7-7-5-5-7-7 topology. Such a combination of odd-membered-ring defects entails a negative Gaussian curvature within its surface with a significant distortion from planarity (saddle height ≈ 4.3 Å). Its absorption and fluorescence maxima are located in the orange-red region, with weak emission originating from the intramolecular charge-transfer character of a low-energy absorption band. Cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed that this stable under ambient conditions aza-nanographene underwent three fully reversible oxidation steps (two one-electron followed by one two-electron) with an exceptionally low first oxidation potential of E _ox1 = -0.38 V (vs. Fc/Fc⁺).

Carbon nanotubes and nanobelts as potential materials for biosensor

We investigate the electronic response of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and a carbon nanobelt (CNB) to N-linked and O-linked SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoproteins, using ab initio quantum mechanical approach. The CNTs are selected from three zigzag, armchair, and chiral groups. We examine the effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) chirality on the interaction between CNTs and glycoproteins. Results indicate that the chiral semiconductor CNTs clearly response to the presence of the glycoproteins by changing the electronic band gaps and electron density of states (DOS). Since the changes in the CNTs band gaps in the presence of N-linked are about two times larger than the changes in the presence of the O-linked glycoprotein, chiral CNT may distinguish different types of the glycoproteins. The same results are obtained from CNBs. Thereby, we predict CNBs and chiral CNTs have suitable potential in sequential analysis of N- and O-linked glycosylation of the spike protein.

Acceleration Effect of Bowl-Shaped Structure in Aerobic Oxidation Reaction: Synthesis of Homosumanene ortho-Quinone and Azaacene-Fused Homosumanenes

An oxidation reaction of hydroxyhomosumanene on silica gel providing homosumanene ortho-quinone and its synthetic application for azaacene-fused homosumanenes is described. Hydroxyhomosumanene is photochemically oxidized by air, when it is coated on silica gel; this aerobic oxidation proceeds faster than that of planar analogues. The difference of such reactivity was attributed to the unusual keto-enol tautomerization due to structural difference between planar and curved π-system. The homosumanene ortho-quinone was used in the synthesis of several azaacene-fused homosumanenes, azaacenohomosumanenes. X-ray diffraction analysis of the single crystals revealed their columnar stacking structures due to the interactions between each bowl. Azaacenohomosumanenes exhibited high electron affinity due to the combination of buckybowl and electron-deficient azaacene moieties.

Physical Mechanism of Spectra in Carbon Nanobelts under Quantum Size Effect

Since the successful synthesis of [6,6]carbon nanobelt (CNB), [8,8]CNB and [12,12]CNB have been synthesized successively. CNBs with different sizes ([2N,2N]CNB; N = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) have quantum size effects and exhibit completely different optical properties. In this work, the linear and nonlinear optical properties and spectral changes of [2N,2N]CNB are studied based on density functional theory (DFT). The molecular volume, pore volume, and stability of [2N,2N]CNB are investigated. The electron transition mechanism of the one-photon absorption (OPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) spectra of [2N,2N]CNB is explained, and the extrapolation formula between the wavelength of the absorption peak and the absorption coefficient (ε) and size is given. The infrared (IR) and Raman spectra of [2N,2N]CNB are calculated, and the vibrational modes of characteristic peaks are provided. Finally, the nonlinear optical properties of [2N,2N]CNB are studied, which reflect the anisotropy of molecular polarization. The extrapolation formulas for the polarizability (α) and second hyperpolarizability (γ) of [2N,2N]CNB under different external fields are given. The extrapolation formulas given in this work will help to predict the linear and nonlinear optical properties of arbitrary [2N,2N]CNB beyond computational power, laying the foundation for the practical application of [2N,2N]CNB's theoretical basis.

Highly efficient charge transport across carbon nanobelts

Carbon nanobelts (CNBs) are a new form of nanocarbon that has promising applications in optoelectronics due to their unique belt-shaped π-conjugated systems. Recent synthetic breakthrough has led to the access to various CNBs, but their optoelectronic properties have not been explored yet. In this work, we study the electronic transport performance of a series of CNBs by incorporating them into molecular devices using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique. We show that, by tuning the bridging groups between the adjacent benzenes in the CNBs, we can achieve remarkably high conductance close to 0.1 G₀, nearly one order of magnitude higher than their nanoring counterpart cycloparaphenylene. Density functional theory-based calculations further elucidate the crucial role of the structural distortion played in facilitating the unique radial π-electron delocalization and charge transport across the belt-shaped carbon skeletons. These results develop a basic understanding of electronic transport properties of CNBs and lay the foundation for further exploration of CNB-based optoelectronic applications.

Porphyrin nanotubes based on a hydrogen-bonded organic framework

Tubular structures offer a wide variety of applications; therefore, designing such materials with distinct dimensions is highly desirable yet challenging. In the current report, we have demonstrated the synthesis of a one-dimensional (1D) tubular assembly comprising porphyrin nanoring subunits. The porphyrin nanoring (PNR) 2 bearing ester groups was synthesized via Pt-mediated cyclization and then hydrolyzed to obtain PNR 3 with carboxylic groups. Under optimized conditions, porphyrin nanotubes (PNTs) were formed through hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic groups of 3. The morphology investigated by both SEM and TEM displayed well-defined arrays of nanotube bundles up to several micrometers long. Small crystals of PNTs were obtained by heating a solution of 3 in DMSO. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) accompanied by selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) exhibited a line of diffractions with d-spacing values of 6.17, 3.08, 2.07, and 1.57 Å. The miller indices of these diffractions could be assigned as 300, 600, 900, and 1200, respectively, suggesting that an ordered structure of 1D PNTs has been formed.

Fluorescent cyclophanes and their applications

With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Synthesis of a Bent, Twisted, and Chiral Phenanthrene via an Iodine Monochloride-Mediated, Strain-Inducing π-Extension Reaction

A strategy for the synthesis of substituted and strained p-phenylene units is reported. An oxidative allylic alcohol rearrangement, followed by organometallic addition to the resulting α-ketol and subsequent dehydrative aromatization, affords p-terphenyl-containing macrocycles in which the central p-phenylene has been selectively substituted. Ten 18-membered macrocycles have been synthesized, eight of which contain substituents that could enable π-extension. Only alkynylated derivatives were amenable to π-extension via an ICl-mediated reaction, affording a highly bent, twisted, and chiral phenanthrene.

Phosphorus ylides of cage-opened sulphide [60]fullerene derivatives

The replacement of a ketone with a sulfide moiety changes the electronic properties of cage-opened fullerene ylides, thus causing a hypsochromic shift in absorption and a cathodic shift of reduction potentials.

N-doped nonalternant aromatic belt via a six-fold annulative double N-arylation

The design and synthesis of nitrogen (N)-doped molecular nanocarbons are of importance since N-doped nanocarbons have received significant attention in materials science. Herein, we report the synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of a nitrogen-inserted nonalternant aromatic belt. The palladium-catalyzed six-fold annulative double N-arylation provided an aromatic belt bearing six nitrogen atoms in one step from cyclo[6]paraphenylene-Z-ethenylene, the precursor of the (6,6)carbon nanobelt. The C_3i-symmetric structure of the aromatic belt in the solid state was revealed using X-ray crystallography. The multistep (electro)chemical oxidation behavior of the belt, which was facilitated by the six p-methoxyaniline moieties, was studied, and a stable dication species was successfully identified by X-ray crystallography. The present study not only shows the unique structure and properties of the N-doped nonalternant aromatic belt but also expands the scope of accessibility of synthetically difficult belt molecules by the conventional intramolecular contraction pathway.

Nitrogen-doped nonalternant aromatic belt was synthesized via palladium-catalyzed six-fold annulative double N-arylation reaction. The highly symmetric structure and multistep oxidation behavior of the N-belt were confirmed.

Infinitene: A Helically Twisted Figure-Eight [12]Circulene Topoisomer

New forms of molecular nanocarbon particularly looped polyarenes adopting various topologies contribute to the fundamental science and practical applications. Here we report the synthesis of an infinity-shaped polyarene, infinitene (1) (cyclo[c.c.c.c.c.c.e.e.e.e.e.e]dodecakisbenzene), comprising consecutively fused 12-benzene rings forming an enclosed loop with a strain energy of 60.2 kcal·mol^-1. Infinitene (1) represents a topoisomer of still-hypothetical [12]circulene, and its scaffold can be formally visualized as the outcome of the "stitching" of two homochiral [6]helicene subunits by both their ends. The synthetic strategy encompasses transformation of a rationally designed dithiacyclophane to cyclophadiene through the Stevens rearrangement and pyrolysis of the corresponding S,S'-bis(oxide) followed by the photocyclization. The structure of 1 is a unique hybrid of helicene and circulene with a molecular formula of C₄₈H₂₄, which can be regarded as an isomer for kekulene, [6,6]carbon nanobelt ([6,6]CNB), and [12]cyclacene. Infinitene (1) is a bench-stable yellow solid with green fluorescence and soluble to common organic solvents. Its figure-eight molecular structure was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The scaffold of 1 is significantly compressed as manifested by a remarkably shortened distance (3.152-3.192 Å) between the centroids of two π-π stacked central benzene rings and the closest C···C distance of 2.920 Å. Fundamental photophysical properties of 1 were thoroughly elucidated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies and density functional theory calculations. Its configurational stability enabled separation of the corresponding enantiomers (P,P) and (M,M) by a chiral HPLC. Circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements revealed that 1 has moderate |g_CD| and |g_CPL| values.

Macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks: the state of the art and progress

Macrocyclic host molecules play the central role in host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The highly structural symmetry of macrocyclic host molecules can meet people's pursuit of aesthetics in molecular design, and generally means a balance of design, synthesis, properties and applications. For macrocyclic host molecules with highly symmetrical structures, building blocks, which could be described as repeat units as well, are the most fundamental elements for molecular design. The structural features and recognition ability of macrocyclic host molecules are determined by the building blocks and their connection patterns. Using different building blocks, different macrocyclic host molecules could be designed and synthesized. With decades of developments of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, diverse macrocyclic host molecules with different building blocks have been designed and synthesized. Aromatic building blocks are a big family among the various building blocks used in constructing macrocyclic host molecules. In this feature article, the recent developments of macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks were summarized and discussed.

Synthesis and Physical Properties of a Phenanthrene-Based [6,6] Hollow Bilayer Cylindrical Nanoring

Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of a [6,6] hollow bilayer cylindrical nanoring (HBCNR) from a planar macrocycle via a Diels-Alder and Yamamoto coupling reaction. The fluorescence quantum yield of HBCNR was determined to be Φ_F = 52%, which is four times higher than its precursor. In addition, its hollow nanoring configuration was also simulated by theoretical studies, and the tension energy was estimated to be 47.1 kcal/mol.

Synthesis and Chiral Resolution of Twisted Carbon Nanobelts

Twisted carbon nanobelts could display persistent chirality, which is desirable for material applications, but their synthesis is very challenging. Herein, we report the successful synthesis and chiral resolution of such a kind of molecules (1-H and 1) with a figure-eight configuration. 1-H was synthesized first by macrocyclization through Suzuki coupling reaction followed by benzannulation via Bi(OTf)₃-mediated cyclization reaction of vinyl ether. Oxidative dehydrogenation of 1-H gave the fully π-conjugated 1. Their twisted structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis and calculations, and they can be resolved by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography. The isolated enantiomers showed persistent chiroptical properties according to the circular dichroism measurements, with moderate |g_abs| values (0.0016 for 1-H and 0.005-0.007 for 1). Their photophysical properties were also briefly studied.

Selective Oxidation of Belt[4]arene[4]tropilidene and Its Application to Construct Hydrocarbon Belts of Truncated Cone Structure with Expand Cavity

Despite their unique structures, tantalizing properties, and potential applications in carbon nanoscience and technology, the synthesis and functionalization of zigzag hydrocarbon nanobelts have remained largely unexplored until recently. Reported herein is the selective transformations of belt[4]arene[4]tropilidenes and their application in the construction of novel belts. The oxidation of belt[4]arene[4]tropilidene with benzeneseleninic anhydride under controlled conditions selectively afforded mono- to tetrakis(α-diketone)-functionalized belt intermediates. A subsequent condensation reaction with 1,2-phenylenediacetonitrile and 1,2-phenylenediamine produced a diversity of unprecedented belts with various macrocyclic cavities.

Conjugated Molecular Nanotubes

Molecular compounds with permanent tubular architectures displaying radial π-conjugation are exceedingly rare. Their radial and axial delocalization presents them with unique optical and electronic properties, such as remarkable tuning of their Stokes shifts, and redox switching between global and local aromaticity. Although these tubular compounds display large internal void spaces, these attributes have not been extensively explored, thus presenting future opportunities in the development of materials. By using cutting-edge synthetic methodologies to bend aromatic surfaces, large opportunities in synthesis, property discovery, and applications are expected in new members of this family of conjugated molecular nanotubes.

A Green Fluorescent Nitrogen-Doped Aromatic Belt Containing a [6]Cycloparaphenylene Skeleton

The design and synthesis of nitrogen-doped aromatic belts with conjugated structures still remain a challenge. Here, we report the first nitrogen-doped aromatic belt with a [6]cycloparaphenylene skeleton, which is conveniently synthesized from the easily available calix[3]carbazole. The aromatic belt has a rigid conjugated structure and deep cavity, and it can encapsulate one dichloromethane both in solution and in the solid state. Interestingly, the aromatic belt shows strong green fluorescence with a quantum yield of 0.39 and exhibits a narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gap of 2.02 eV. The belt-shaped conjugated structure composed of three carbazole subunits has specific optoelectronic properties that will promote wide applications in supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Scalable, Divergent Synthesis of a High Aspect Ratio Carbon Nanobelt

Carbon nanobelts are molecules of high fundamental and technological interest due to their structural similarity to carbon nanotubes, of which they are molecular cutouts. Despite this attention, synthetic accessibility is a major obstacle, such that the few known strategies offer limited structural diversity, functionality, and scalability. To address this bottleneck, we have developed a new strategy that utilizes highly fused monomer units constructed via a site-selective [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition and a high-yielding zirconocene-mediated macrocyclization to achieve the synthesis of a new carbon nanobelt on large scale with the introduction of functional handles in the penultimate step. This nanobelt represents a diagonal cross section of an armchair carbon nanotube and consequently has a longitudinally extended structure with an aspect ratio of 1.6, the highest of any reported nanobelt. This elongated structure promotes solid-state packing into aligned columns that mimic the parent carbon nanotube and facilitates unprecedented host-guest chemistry with oligo-arylene guests in nonpolar solvents.

Asymmetric synthesis, structures, and chiroptical properties of helical cycloparaphenylenes

Planar chiral carbon nanorings and nanobelts (CNRs and CNBs), the sidewall segment molecules of chiral-type carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have attracted attention owing to their characteristic chiroptical properties. From the appropriate CNTs, axially or planar chiral CNRs and CNBs have been designed and synthesized, but multiply helical sidewall segments were almost unexplored due to the difficulty in simultaneous control of multiple chiralities. In this article, we have succeeded in the perfectly diastereo- and enantiocontrolled catalytic synthesis of a cycloparaphenylene with four helical and two planar chiralities showing good chiroptical responses as chiral organic molecules. The perfectly stereocontrolled multiply helical structure was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental and theoretical studies established the importance of the highly symmetric multiply helical structure in the cylindrical axis in obtaining good chiroptical responses.

Semiconducting and Metallic [5,5] Fullertube Nanowires: Characterization of Pristine D5h(1)-C90 and D5d(1)-C100

Although fullerenes were discovered nearly 35 years ago, scientists still struggle to isolate "single molecule" tubular fullerenes larger than C₉₀. In similar fashion, there is a paucity of reports for pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In spite of Herculean efforts, the isolation and properties of pristine members of these carbonaceous classes remain largely unfulfilled. For example, the low abundance of spherical and tubular higher fullerenes in electric-arc extracts (<0.01-0.5%) and multiplicity of structural isomers remain a major challenge. Recently, a new isolation protocol for highly tubular fullerenes, also called f ullertubes, was reported. Herein, we describe spectroscopic characterization including ¹³C NMR, XPS, and Raman results for purified [5,5] fullertube family members, D_5h-C₉₀ and D_5d-C₁₀₀. In addition, DFT computational HOMO-LUMO gaps, polarizability indices, and electron density maps were also obtained. The Raman and ¹³C NMR results are consistent with semiconducting and metallic properties for D_5h-C₉₀ and D_5d-C₁₀₀, respectively. Our report suggests that short [5,5] fullertubes with aspect ratios of only ∼1.5-2 are metallic and could exhibit unique electronic properties.

Synthesis and derivatization of hetera-buckybowls

Buckybowls have concave and convex surfaces with distinct π-electron cloud distribution, and consequently they show unique structural and electronic features as compared to planar aromatic polycycles. Doping the π-framework of buckybowls with heteroatoms is an efficient scheme to tailor inherent properties, because the nature of heteroatoms plays a pivotal role in the structural and electronic characteristics of the resulting hetera-buckybowls. The design, synthesis, and derivatization of hetera-buckybowls open an avenue for obtaining fascinating organic entities not only of fundamental importance but also of promising applications in optoelectronics. In this review, we summarize the advances in hetera-buckybowl chemistry, particularly the synthetic strategies toward these scaffolds.

Conjugated Nanohoops Incorporating Donor, Acceptor, Hetero- or Polycyclic Aromatics

In the last 13 years several synthetic strategies were developed that provide access to [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) and related conjugated nanohoops. A number of potential applications emerged, including optoelectronic devices, and their use as templates for carbon nanomaterials and in supramolecular chemistry. To tune the structural or optoelectronic properties of carbon nanohoops beyond the size‐dependent effect known for [n]CPPs, a variety of aromatic rings other than benzene were introduced. In this Review, we provide an overview of the syntheses, properties, and applications of conjugated nanohoops beyond [n]CPPs with intrinsic donor/acceptor structure or such that contain acceptor, donor, heteroaromatic or polycyclic aromatic units within the hoop as well as conjugated nanobelts.

Assessment of long-range corrected density functional theory on the absorption and vibrationally resolved fluorescence spectrum of carbon nanobelts

Time-dependent (TD) density functional theory (DFT) and Franck-Condon Hertzberg-Teller (FCHT) calculations of various DFT functionals [B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, ωB97XD, and optimally tuned (OT) long-range corrected (LC)-BLYP] were performed to examine how well DFT functionals can predict the experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of a 12-carbon nanobelt (CNB). OT-LC-BLYP reproduced the experimental absorption spectrum well in terms of the peak position and intensity in the case of using a basis set with a diffuse function, such as 6-31+G(d,p) and 6-311+G(d,p), whereas B3LYP showed a red-shift in the peak positions and CAM-B3LYP and ωB97XD, which have a long-range HF exchange, showed blue shifts. Regarding the fluorescence spectrum calculations with FCHT using 6-311+G(d,p), the OT-LC-BLYP reproduced both the peak intensities and positions closest to the experimental spectrum. B3LYP, however, showed red-shifted peaks, and ωB97XD showed blue-shifted peaks. CAM-B3LYP provided less blue-shifted peaks, but the relative peak intensities mismatched the experimental ones. Furthermore, calculations of the absorption and vibrationally resolved fluorescence spectra of 16-CNB and 24-CNB using OT-LC-BLYP/6-311+G(d,p) showed absorption and fluorescence spectra close to the experimental spectra with high accuracy. Moreover, the application of a polarizable continuum model (dichloromethane) produced a red shift in the peak positions of the absorption spectrum with increasing intensity but an increase in the peak intensities of the fluorescence calculations without shifting the peak position.

Energetics of Formation of Cyclacenes from 2,3-Didehydroacenes and Implications for Astrochemistry

The carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are still largely unknown although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon chains, and fullerenes are likely candidates. A recent analysis of the properties of n-acenes of general formula C4n+2 H2n+4 suggested that these could be potential carriers of some DIBs. Dehydrogenation reactions of n-acenes after absorption of an interstellar UV photon may result in dehydroacenes. Here the reaction energies and barriers for formation of n-cyclacenes from 2,3-didehydroacenes (n-DDA) by intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction to dihydro-etheno-cyclacenes (n-DEC) followed by ejection of ethyne by retro-Diels-Alder reactions are analyzed using thermally assisted occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) for n=10-20. It is found that the barriers for each of the steps depend on the ring strain of the underlying n-cyclacene, and that the ring strain of n-DEC is about 75 % of that of the corresponding n-cyclacene. In each case, ethyne extrusion is the step with the highest energy barrier, but these barriers are smaller than CH bond dissociation energies, suggesting that formation of cyclacenes is an energetically conceivable fate of n-acenes after multiple absorption of UV photons.
