A Photoswitchable Heteroditopic Ion-Pair Receptor

Lithium chloride selective ion-pair recognition by heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes

The first heteroditopic [2]rotaxane host systems capable of strong and selective binding of lithium chloride ion-pair species are described. Importantly, a cooperative 'switch on' mechanism was found to operate, in which complexation of a lithium metal cation enhances the halide anion affinity of the rotaxanes via a combination of favourable proximal electrostatic and preorganised allosteric effects. The mechanically bonded rotaxane host design features a macrocycle component possessing a 2,6-dialkoxy pyridyl cation binding motif and an isophthalamide anion binding group, as well as an axle component functionalised with either a halogen bonding (XB) iodotriazole or hydrogen bonding (HB) prototriazole moiety. Extensive quantitative 1H NMR titration studies in CD3CN/CDCl3 solvent mixtures determined enhanced ion-pair binding affinities for lithium halides over the corresponding sodium or potassium halide salts, with the axle prototriazole-containing HB rotaxane in particular demonstrating a marked selectivity for lithium chloride. Solid-state X-ray crystallographic studies and computational DFT investigations provide evidence for a [2]rotaxane host axle-separated ion-pair binding mode, in which complementary cation and anion binding motifs from both the macrocycle and axle components act convergently to recognise each of the charged guest species.

A molecular anion pump

Pumping ions against a concentration gradient through protein-based transporters is a cornerstone of numerous biological processes. Mimicking this function by using artificial receptors remains a daunting challenge, mainly because of the difficulties in balancing between the requirement for high binding affinities and precise and on-demand ion capture and release properties. We report a trimeric hydrazone photoswitch-based receptor that converts light energy into work by actively transporting chloride anion against a gradient through a dichloromethane liquid membrane, functioning as a molecular pump. The system manifests ease of synthesis, bistability, excellent photoswitching properties, and superb ON-OFF binding properties (difference of up to six orders of magnitude).

Ammonium halide selective ion pair recognition and extraction with a chalcogen bonding heteroditopic receptor

The first example of a heteroditopic receptor capable of cooperative recognition and extraction of ammonium salt (NH4X) ion-pairs is described. Consisting of a bidentate 3,5-bis-tellurotriazole chalcogen bond donor binding cleft, the appendage of benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) substituents to the tellurium centres facilitates binding of the ammonium cation via a co-facial bis-B15C5 sandwich complex, which serves to switch on chalcogen bonding-mediated anion binding potency. Extensive quantitative ion-pair recognition 1H NMR titration studies in CD3CN/CDCl3 (1 : 1, v/v) solvent media reveal impressive ion-pair binding affinities towards a variety of ammonium halide, nitrate and thiocyanate salts, with the heteroditopic receptor displaying notable ammonium halide salt selectivity. The prodigious solution phase NH4X recognition also translates to efficient solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction capabilities.

Construction of Trisubstituted Hydrazones via Base-Mediated Cascade Condensation N-Alkylation

A practical base-promoted tandem condensation N-alkylation reaction for the formation of trisubstituted hydrazones has been developed employing aldehydes and hydrazines with alkyl halides. Crucially, this reaction successfully overcomes chemoselectivity problems, allowing for the reaction of multiple components in a one-pot manner. Halo- and heterofunctional groups, as well as free hydroxyl and amino groups, are tolerated in this transformation to produce a wide range of trisubstituted hydrazones in good to excellent yields.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Lanthanide Pyridinylphosphonic Tacn and Pyclen Derivatives: From Mononuclear Complexes to Supramolecular Heteronuclear Assemblies

Synthetic methodologies were developed to achieve the preparation of ligands L1 and L2 consisting of tacn- and pyclen-based chelators decorated with pyridinylphosphonic pendant arms combined with ethylpicolinamide or acetate coordinating functions, respectively. Phosphonate functions have been selected for their high affinity toward Ln3+ ions compared to their carboxylated counterparts and for their steric hindrance that favors the formation of less-hydrated complexes. Thanks to regiospecific N-functionalization of the macrocyclic backbones, the two ligands were isolated with good yields and implicated in a comprehensive photophysical study for the complexation of Eu3+, Tb3+, and Yb3+. The coordination behavior of L1 and L2 with these cations has been first investigated by means of a combination of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy, and 1H and 31P NMR titration experiments. Structural characterization in solution was assessed by NMR spectroscopy, corroborated by theoretical calculations. Spectroscopic characterization of the Ln3+ complexes of L1 and L2 was done in water and D2O and showed the effective sensitization of the lanthanide metal-centered emission spectra, each exhibiting typical lanthanide emission bands. The results obtained for the phosphonated ligands were compared with those reported previously for the corresponding carboxylated analogues.

Photo- and Redox-Regulated Transmembrane Ion Transporters

Synthetic supramolecular ion transporters find applications as potential therapeutics and as tools for engineering functional membranes. Stimuli-responsive systems enable external control over transport, which is necessary for targeted activation. The Minireview provides an overview of current approaches to developing stimuli-responsive ion transport systems, including channels and mobile carriers, that can be controlled using photo or redox inputs.

Synthesis of (R)-(6-Methoxyquinolin-4-yl)[(1S,2S,4S,5R)-5-vinylquinuclidin-2-yl]methanol Tetraphenylborate Ion-Pair Complex: Characterization, Antimicrobial, and Computational Study

The (R)-(6-Methoxyquinolin-4-yl)[(1S,2S,4S,5R)-5-vinylquinuclidin-2-yl]methanol (quinine)-tetraphenylborate complex was synthesized by reacting sodium tetraphenyl borate with quinine in deionized water at room temperature through an ion-pair reaction (green chemistry) at room temperature. The solid complex was characterized by several physicochemical methods. The formation of ion-pair complex between bio-active molecules and/or organic molecules is crucial to comprehending the relationships between bioactive molecules and receptor interactions. The complex under study was examined for antimicrobial activity. All theoretical calculations were carried out in vacuum and water using the B3LYP level 6-311G(d,p) levels of theory. The theoretical computation allowed for the prediction and visualization of ionic interactions, which explained the complex's stability. The results of energy optimization showed that the Q-TPB complex is stable with a negative complexation energy. The obtained geometries showed that the boron (B-) and nitrogen (N+) in piperidine of the two molecules tetraphenylborate and quinine are close to each other, which makes it possible for ions to interact. The modest energy gap between HOMO and LUMO showed that the compound was stable. The computation of the electron transitions of the two models by density functional theory (TD-DFT) in the solvent at the theoretical level B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) allowed for the detection of three UV/visible absorption bands for both models and the discovery of a charge transfer between the host and the guest. The UV absorption, infrared, and H NMR are comparable with the experimental part.

Squaramide-Based Heteroditopic [2]Rotaxanes for Sodium Halide Ion-Pair Recognition

A series of squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes consisting of isophthalamide macrocycle and squaramide axle components are synthesized using an alkali metal cation template-directed stoppering methodology. This work highlights the unprecedented sodium cation template coordination of the Lewis basic squaramide carbonyls for interlocked structure synthesis. Extensive quantitative 1 H NMR spectroscopic anion and ion-pair recognition studies reveal the [2]rotaxane hosts are capable of cooperative sodium halide ion-pair mechanical bond axle-macrocycle component recognition, eliciting up to 20-fold enhancements in binding strengths for bromide and iodide, wherein the Lewis basic carbonyls and Lewis acidic NH hydrogen bond donors of the squaramide axle motif operate as cation and anion receptive sites simultaneously in an ambidentate fashion. Notably, varying the length and nature of the polyether cation binding unit of the macrocycle component dramatically influences the ion-pair binding affinities of the [2]rotaxanes, even overcoming direct contact NaCl ion-pair binding modes in polar organic solvents. Furthermore, the cooperative ion-pair binding properties of the squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes are exploited to successfully extract solid sodium halide salts into organic media.

Exploring the role of halogen bonding in iodonium ylides: insights into unexpected reactivity and reaction control

Halogen bonding is commonly found with iodine-containing molecules, and it arises when Lewis bases interact with iodine's σ-holes. Halogen bonding and σ-holes have been encountered in numerous monovalent and hypervalent iodine-containing compounds, and in 2022 σ-holes were computationally confirmed and quantified in the iodonium ylide subset of hypervalent iodine compounds. In light of this new discovery, this article provides an overview of the reactions of iodonium ylides in which halogen bonding has been invoked. Herein, we summarize key discoveries and mechanistic proposals from the early iodonium ylide literature that invoked halogen bonding-type mechanisms, as well as recent reports of reactions between iodonium ylides and Lewis basic nucleophiles in which halogen bonding has been specifically invoked. The reactions discussed herein are organized to enable the reader to build an understanding of how halogen bonding might impact yield and chemoselectivity outcomes in reactions of iodonium ylides. Areas of focus include nucleophile σ-hole selectivity, and how ylide structural modifications and intramolecular halogen bonding (e.g., the ortho-effect) can improve ylide stability or solubility, and alter reaction outcomes.

Photoswitchable Bis(amidopyrroles): Modulating Anion Transport Activity Independent of Binding Affinity

Toward photocontrol of anion transport across the bilayer membrane, stiff-stilbene, which has dimethyl substituents in the five-membered rings, is functionalized with amidopyrrole units. UV-vis and 1H NMR studies show high photostability and photoconversion yields. Where the photoaddressable (E)- and (Z)-isomers exhibit comparable binding affinities, as determined by 1H NMR titrations, fluorescence-based transport assays reveal significantly higher transport activity for the (Z)-isomers. Changing the binding affinity is thus not a necessity for modulating transport. Additionally, transport can be triggered in situ by light.

Stimulus-Controlled Anion Binding and Transport by Synthetic Receptors

Anionic species are omnipresent and involved in many important biological processes. A large number of artificial anion receptors has therefore been developed. Some of these are capable of mediating transmembrane transport. However, where transport proteins can respond to stimuli in their surroundings, creation of synthetic receptors with stimuli-responsive functions poses a major challenge. Herein, we give a full overview of the stimulus-controlled anion receptors that have been developed thus far, including their application in membrane transport. In addition to their potential operation as membrane carriers, the use of anion recognition motifs in forming responsive membrane-spanning channels is discussed. With this review article, we intend to increase interest in transmembrane transport among scientists working on host-guest complexes and dynamic functional systems in order to stimulate further developments.

Cooperativity in Photofoldamer Chloride Double Helices Turned On with Sequences and Solvents, Around with Guests, and Off with Light

Photofoldamers are sequence-defined receptors capable of switching guest binding on and off. When two foldamer strands wrap around the guest into 2:1 double helical complexes, cooperativity emerges, and with it comes the possibility to switch cooperativity with light and other stimuli. We use lessons from nonswitchable sequence isomers of aryl-triazole foldamers to guide how to vary the sequence location of azobenzenes from the end (F_END) to the interior (F_IN) and report their impact on the cooperative formation of 2:1 complexes with Cl^-. This sequence change produces a 125-fold increase from anti-cooperative (α = 0.008) for F_END to non-cooperative with F_IN (α = 1.0). Density functional theory (DFT) studies show greater H-bonding and a more relaxed double helix for F_IN. The solvent and guest complement the synthetic designs. Use of acetonitrile to enhance solvophobicity further enhances cooperativity in F_IN (α = 126) but lowers the difference in cooperativity between sequences. Surprisingly, the impact of the sequence on cooperativity is inverted when the guest size is increased from Cl^- (3.4 Å) to BF₄^- (4.1 Å). While photoconversion of interior azobenzenes was poor, the cis-cis isomer forms 1:1 complexes around chloride consistent with switching cooperativity. The effect of the guest, solvent, and light on the double-helix cooperativity depends on the sequence.

Multicolor Adjustable B-N Molecular Switches: Simple, Efficient, Portable, and Visual Identification of Butanol Isomers

As intelligent probes, dynamic and controllable molecular switches are useful tools for probing and intervening in life processes. However, the types and properties of molecular switches are still relatively single and often can only make two actions: "off" and "on". Therefore, the development of novel molecular switches with multiple colors and multiple instructions is very challenging. Herein, we propose a novel strategy based on the instability of the Lewis acid-base pair (boron (B) and nitrogen (N)), such as introducing the Schiff base (C═N) group into the aminoborane skeleton and preparing the novel molecular switches BN-HDZ and BN-HDZ-N. These two molecules were found to have good multicolor fluorescence switching capability for methanol. Surprisingly, the compound BN-HDZ-N shows unprecedented visual identification for the butanol isomers and could be made into a portable strip for simple and rapid visual identification of the four isomers of butanol, promising an alternative to conventional Lucas reagents. This provides a novel strategy for the design and fabrication of novel multicolor-tunable molecular switches with visual identification of isomers.

Singlet Oxygen Responsive Molecular Receptor to Modulate Atropisomerism and Cation Binding

In switchable molecular recognition, ¹ O₂ stimulus responsive receptors offer a unique structural change that is rarely exploited. The employed [4+2] reaction between ¹ O₂ and anthracene derivatives is quantitative, reversible and easily implemented. To evaluate the full potential of this new stimulus, a non-macrocyclic anthracene-based host was designed for the modular binding of cations. The structural investigation showed that ¹ O₂ controlled the atropisomerism in an on/off fashion within the pair of hosts. The binding studies revealed higher association constants for the endoperoxide receptor compared to the parent anthracene, due to a more favoured preorganization of the recognition site. The fatigue of the ¹ O₂ switchable hosts and their complexes was monitored over five cycles of cycloaddition/cycloreversion.

Progress and prospects toward supramolecular bioactive ion transporters

The majority of cellular physiological processes depend on natural ion channels, which are pore-forming membrane-embedded proteins that let ions flow across the cell membranes selectively. This selective movement of ions across the membranes balances the osmolality within and outside the cell. However, mutations in the genes that encode essential membrane transport proteins or structural reorganisation of these proteins can cause life-threatening diseases like cystic fibrosis. Artificial ion transport systems have opened up a way to replace dysfunctional natural ion channels to cure such diseases through channel replacement therapy. Moreover, recent research has also demonstrated the ability of these systems to kill cancer cells, reigniting interest in the field among scientists. Our contributions to the recent progress in the design and development of artificial chloride ion transporters and their effect on biological systems have been discussed in this review. This review would provide current vistas and future directions toward the development of novel ion transporters with improved biocompatibility and desired anti-cancer properties. Additionally, it strongly emphasises stimuli-responsive ion transport systems, which are crucial for obtaining target-specificity and may speed up the application of these systems in clinical therapeutics.

Recent Advancements in Ion-Pair Receptors

Over the past two decades, non-covalent chemistry has introduced various promising artificial receptors and revolutionized the host-guest chemistry. These versatile receptors have particularly been entertained in sensing and recognizing of diverse neutral molecules and/or ionic entities (e. g. anions, cations and ion-pair) of particular interest. Notably, supramolecular chemistry had given birth to a plethora of important molecules, explored in the chemical, biological, environmental, and pharmacological world to resolve the critical issues related to the human health while keeping environmental concerns in mind. Amongst the various types of supramolecular monotopic receptors (anions, cations, and neutral molecules), heteroditopic receptors (ion-pair receptors) consisting of distinct binding sites in one system for both cation and anion, have gained much interest from the scientific community in recent past because of their unique binding abilities. Interestingly, these promising artificial receptors have shown potential applications in sensing, recognition, transport and extraction processes besides their uses in salt/waste purification. Bearing the importance of these systems in mind, we intended to report the recent developments in ion-pair chemistry. Herein, we divided the whole document into three main sections; first one describes the introduction and history of the ion-pairs receptors. The second portion highlights the synthesis and applications of ion-pair receptors in sensing, recognition, molecular machines, photoswitching behaviour, extraction and transport properties, whereas the last part of this manuscript provides concluding remarks as well as future prospects of ion-pair receptors. We hope that this manuscript will be helpful to stimulating researchers around the globe to find out the hidden opportunities in this and related areas.

Metal-Photoswitch Friendship: From Photochromic Complexes to Functional Materials

Cooperative metal-photoswitch interfaces comprise an application-driven field which is based on strategic coupling of metal cations and organic photochromic molecules to advance the behavior of both components, resulting in dynamic molecular and material properties controlled through external stimuli. In this Perspective, we highlight the ways in which metal-photoswitch interplay can be utilized as a tool to modulate a system's physicochemical properties and performance in a variety of structural motifs, including discrete molecular complexes or cages, as well as periodic structures such as metal-organic frameworks. This Perspective starts with photochromic molecular complexes as the smallest subunit in which metal-photoswitch interactions can occur, and progresses toward functional materials. In particular, we explore the role of the metal-photoswitch relationship for gaining fundamental knowledge of switchable electronic and magnetic properties, as well as in the design of stimuli-responsive sensors, optically gated memory devices, catalysts, and photodynamic therapeutic agents. The abundance of stimuli-responsive systems in the natural world only foreshadows the creative directions that will uncover the full potential of metal-photoswitch interactions in the coming years.

Photo-switchable anion binding and catalysis with a visible light responsive halogen bonding receptor

Photo-switchable receptors allow for photo-control over guest binding and release with spatial and temporal precision. Here we report the first halogen bonding photo-switchable anion receptors in which chloride binding may be reversibly modulated by irradiation with red and blue light, with over a 50-fold enhancement in chloride binding affinity observed for the Z isomer. We demonstrate that this switchable binding enables unprecedented photo-controlled catalysis of XB-mediated halide abstractions and a Mukaiyama Aldol reaction.

Dynamic Covalent Self-Assembly of Chloride- and Ion-Pair-Templated Cryptates

While supramolecular hosts capable of binding and transporting anions and ion pairs are now widely available, self-assembled architectures are still rare, even though they offer an inherent mechanism for the release of the guest ion(s). In this work, we report the dynamic covalent self-assembly of tripodal, urea-based anion cryptates that are held together by two orthoester bridgeheads. These hosts exhibit affinity for anions such as Cl- , Br- or I- in the moderate range that is typically advantageous for applications in membrane transport. In unprecedented experiments, we were able to dissociate the Cs⋅Cl ion pair by simultaneously assembling suitably sized orthoester hosts around the Cs+ and the Cl- ion.

Acylhydrazone-based supramolecular assemblies undergoing a converse sol-to-gel transition on trans → cis photoisomerization

Photoisomeric supramolecular assemblies have drawn enormous attention in recent years. Although it is a general rule that photoisomerization from a less to a more distorted isomer causes the destruction of assemblies, this photoisomerization process inducing a converse transition from irregular aggregates to regular assemblies is still a great challenge. Here, we report a converse sol-to-gel transition derived from the planar to nonplanar photoisomer conversion, which is in sharp contrast to the conventional light-induced gel collapse. A well-designed acylhydrazone-linked monomer is exploited as a photoisomer to realize the above-mentioned phase transition. In the monomer, imine is responsible for trans-cis interconversion and amide generates intermolecular hydrogen bonds enabling the photoisomerization-driven self-assembly. The counterintuitive feature of the sol-to-gel transition is ascribed to the partial trans → cis photoisomerization of acylhydrazone causing changes in stacking mode of monomers. Furthermore, the reversible phase transition is applied in the valves formed in situ in microfluidic devices, providing fascinating potential for miniature materials.

Killing two birds with one stone: phosphorylation by a tabun mimic and subsequent capture of cyanide using a single fluorescent chemodosimeter

In the presence of the tabun mimic diethylcyanophosphonate (DECP), a fluorescent bifunctional coumarin–enamine chemodosimeter is first phosphorylated and subsequently attacked by the released cyanide ions.

Red-shifted tetra-ortho-halo-azobenzenes for photo-regulated transmembrane anion transport

Photo-responsive synthetic ion transporters are of interest as tools for studying transmembrane transport processes and have potential applications as targeted therapeutics, due to the possibility of spatiotemporal control and wavelength-dependent function. Here we report the synthesis of novel symmetric and non-symmetric red-shifted tetra-ortho-chloro- and tetra-ortho-fluoro azobenzenes, bearing pendant amine functionality. Functionalisation of the photo-switchable scaffolds with squaramide hydrogen bond donors enabled the preparation of a family of anion receptors, which act as photo-regulated transmembrane chloride transporters in response to green or red light. The subtle effects of chlorine/fluorine substitution, meta/para positioning of the anion receptors, and the use of more flexible linkers are explored. NMR titration experiments on the structurally diverse photo-switchable receptors reveal cooperative binding of chloride in the Z, but not E isomer, by the two squaramide binding sites. These results are supported by molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent and model membranes. We show that this intramolecular anion recognition leads to effective switching of transport activity in lipid bilayer membranes, in which optimal Z isomer activity is achieved using a combination of fluorine substitution and para-methylene spacer units.

Hydrazones in anion transporters: the detrimental effect of a second binding site

Synthetic anion transporters can be developed using anion receptors that are able to bind the anion and stabilize it in the lipophilic interior of a bilayer membrane, and they usually contain functional groups with acidic NHs, such as ureas, thioureas and squaramides. To assess the suitability of acylhydrazones as a new functional group for the preparation of anion transporters, we have studied a family of thioureas functionalized with these and related functional groups. ¹H NMR titrations and DFT calculations indicate that the thioureas bearing acylhydrazone groups behave as chloride receptors with two separate binding sites, of which the acylhydrazone binds weaker than the thiourea. Chloride transport studies show that the additional binding site has a detrimental effect on thiourea-based transporters, and this phenomenon is also observed for bis(thio)ureas with two separate binding sites. We propose that the presence of a second anion binding unit hinders the transport activity of the thiourea due to additional interactions with the phospholipids of the membrane. In agreement with this hypothesis, extensive molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the molecules will tend to be positioned in the water/lipid interface, driven by the interaction of the NHs of the thiourea and of the acylhydrazone groups with the POPC polar head groups and water molecules. Moreover, the interaction energies show that the poorest transporters have indeed the strongest interactions with the membrane phospholipids, inhibiting chloride transport. This detrimental effect of additional functional groups on transport activity should be considered when designing new ion transporters, unless these groups cooperatively promote anion recognition and transmembrane transport.

Stimuli-Responsive Anion Transport through Acylhydrazone-Based Synthetic Anionophores

Photoswitchable acylhydrazone-based synthetic anionophores are reported. Single-crystal X-ray structure and ¹H NMR titration studies confirmed the chloride binding in solid and solution states. The ion transport activity of 1a was greatly attenuated through a phototriggered E to Z photoisomerization process, and the photoisomerized deactivated state showed high kinetic stability due to an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Switchable "OFF-ON" transport activity was achieved by the application of light and acid-catalyzed reactivation process.

From Heteroditopic to Multitopic Receptors for Ion-Pair Recognition: Advances in Receptor Design and Applications

Ion-pair recognition has emerged from cation and anion recognition and become a diverse and active field in its own right. The last decade has seen significant advances in receptor design in terms of the types of binding motifs, understanding of cooperativity and increase in complexity from heteroditopic to multitopic receptors. As a result, attention has turned to applying this knowledge to the rational design of ion-pair receptors for applications in salt solubilisation and extraction, membrane transport and sensing. This Review highlights recent progress and developments in the design and applications of heteroditopic and multitopic receptors for ion-pair recognition.

A photoswitchable strapped calix[4]pyrrole receptor: highly effective chloride binding and release

A stiff-stilbene strapped calix[4]pyrrole receptor can be reversibly switched by light between a strong chloride-binding Z-isomer and a very weakly binding E-isomer. The light-induced switching process is monitored by UV-Vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy and chloride binding is studied in detail using both 1H NMR and ITC titrations in DMSO and MeCN. In DMSO, at millimolar concentrations, switching from a fully bound to an almost fully unbound state can be triggered. Quantification of the binding constants in MeCN reveals an extraordinary 8000-fold affinity difference between the Z- and E-isomer. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis gives insight into the structure of the photogenerated E-isomer and the geometry of the chloride-bound receptors is optimized by DFT calculations. The highly effective control of binding affinity demonstrated in this work opens up new prospects for on demand binding and release in extractions and photocontrol of membrane transport processes, among other applications.

A Reversible Hydrogen-Bond Isomerization Triggered by an Abrupt Spin Crossover near Room Temperature

The spin crossover salt [Fe(bpp)₂ ](isonicNO)₂ ⋅ 2.4 H₂ O (1⋅2.4 H₂ O) (bpp=2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; isonicNO=isonicotinate N-oxide anion) exhibits a very abrupt spin crossover at T_1/2 =274.4 K. This triggers a supramolecular linkage (H-bond) isomerization that responds reversibly towards light irradiation or temperature change. Isotopic effects in the thermomagnetic behavior reveal the importance of hydrogen bonds in defining the magnetic state. Further, the title compound can be reversibly dehydrated to afford 1, a material that also exhibits spin crossover coupled to H-bond isomerization, leading to strong kinetic effects in the thermomagnetic properties.

The second-order NLO property of a photoswitchable heteroditpioc ion-pair receptor based on 2-pyridyl acylhydrazone linking with 2,6-pyridine bisamide: The impacts of metal cations and anions

A photoswitchable heteroditpioc ion-pair receptor E-1 and its isomeride Z-1 (without the anion binding site), that are based on the 2-pyridyl acylhydrazone linking 2,6-pyridine bisamide, have brought our attention to systematically explore the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties by the density functional theory (DFT). In this work, we mainly studied the influences of metal cations (M = Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺), anions (X = Cl^-, Br^- and I^-) and ion-pair (NaCl, NaBr and NaI) on NLO responses for the receptor. In addition, the impacts of isomerization and poto-switching processes on NLO response for these systems also have been discussed detailedly. The results show that the isomerization process does not effectively adjust the NLO properties for our studied systems. But the poto-switching process that was triggered by light to capure or release ions plays an important role in improving the NLO properties. The receptors E-1 and Z-1 are excellent candidates to effectively detect metal cation Pb²⁺, because the first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) values of E∗Pb²⁺ and Z∗Pb²⁺ increased by 13 times and 20 times relative to that of receptors E-1 (188.06 a.u.) and Z-1 (270.21 a.u.), respectively. In addition, the receptor E-1 has the possibility to detect anion I^- due to the larger β_tot values compared with other anion-complexes. However, the changes of NLO responses for ion-pair complexes are not obvious compared with corresponding anion-complexes. We are looking forward to the research would be beneficial for further theoretical and experimental studies on recognizing metal cations and anions based on large second-order NLO difference.

Noncovalent and Dynamic Covalent Chemistry Strategies for Driving Thermoresponsive Phase Transition with Multistimuli and Controlled Encapsulation/Release

We report the development of multiresponsive thermally sensitive polymers through both supramolecular and reversible covalent strategies as well as their use in controlled encapsulation and release. Novel acylhydrazone-based dynamic covalent polymers displaying lower critical solution temperature (LCST) or upper critical solution temperature (UCST) were synthesized. A remarkable control over thermal phase transition can be tuned through multimodes, such as anions, cations, solvent, pH, and competing components. In particular, anion recognition allowed disassembly and thus led to a significant decrease of UCST in dimethyl sulfoxide, and the combination of anion and solvent effects offered additional handle for control. Moreover, the use of anions, cations, as well as pH change was employed for the modulation of LCST-type polymer in water. Furthermore, switching on/off thermoresponsiveness was readily achieved by dynamic covalent exchange. Mechanistic studies also shed light on stimuli-induced changes in aggregation behaviors. Finally, thermally controlled encapsulation and release of hydrophobic and hydrophilic dyes were realized with great repeatability and reversibility, respectively, showing potential in delivery and sensing. The results and strategies described should provide opportunities for many aspects, including dynamic assemblies, complex systems, and adaptive materials.

Light-Modulated Self-Blockage of a Urea Binding Site in a Stiff-Stilbene Based Anion Receptor

Anion binding to a receptor based on stiff-stilbene, which is equipped with a urea hydrogen bond donating group and a phosphate or phosphinate hydrogen bond accepting group, can be controlled by light. In one photoaddressable state (E isomer) the urea binding site is available for binding, while in the other (Z isomer) it is blocked because of an intramolecular interaction with its hydrogen bond accepting motif. This intramolecular interaction is supported by DFT calculations and 1 H NMR titrations reveal a significantly lower anion binding strength for the state in which anion binding is blocked. Furthermore, the molecular switching process has been studied in detail by UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopy. The presented approach opens up new opportunities toward the development of photoresponsive anion receptors.

The Effect of Substitution Pattern on Binding Ability in Regioisomeric Ion Pair Receptors Based on an Aminobenzoic Platform

A series of ditopic ion pair receptors equipped with 4-nitrophenylurea and 1-aza-18-crown-6-ether linked by ortho-(1), meta-(2), and para-(3) substituted benzoic acid were readily synthesized in three steps from commercially available materials. The binding properties of these regioisomeric receptors were determined using UV-vis and ¹H NMR spectroscopy in MeCN and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography. The solution studies revealed that, apart from carboxylates, all the anions tested formed stronger complexes in the presence of sodium cations. Receptors 2 and 3 were found to interact with ion pairs with remarkably higher affinity than ortho-substituted 1. ¹H NMR titration experiments showed that both urea NH protons interacted with anions with comparable strength in the case of receptors 2 and 3, but only one of the NHs was effective in anion binding in the case of receptor 1. X-ray analysis of the crystal structure of receptor 1 and 1·NaPF₆ complex showed that binding was hampered due to the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Analysis of the crystal structures of 2·NaBr and 3·NaBr complexes revealed that proper mutual orientation of binding domains was responsible for the improved binding of the sodium salts.

Conformational and Tautomeric Control by Supramolecular Approach in Ureido-N-iso-propyl,N'-4-(3-pyridin-2-one)pyrimidine

Ureido-N-iso-propyl,N’-4-(3-pyridin-2-one)pyrimidine (1) and its 2-methoxy pyridine derivative (1Me) has been designed and prepared. The conformational equilibrium in urea moiety and tautomerism in the pyrimidine part have been investigated by variable temperature and ¹H NMR titrations as well as DFT quantum chemical calculations. The studied compounds readily associate by triple hydrogen bonding with 2-aminonaphthyridine (A) and/or 2,6-bis(acetylamino)pyridine (B). In 1, the proton is forced to 1,3-tautomeric shift upon stimuli and keeps it position, even when one of the partners in the complex was replaced by another molecule. The observed tautomerism controlled by conformational state (kinetic trapping effect) opens new possibilities in molecular sensing that are based on the fact that reverse reaction is not preferred.

Recent Implementations of Molecular Photoswitches into Smart Materials and Biological Systems

Light is a nearly ideal stimulus for molecular systems. It delivers information encoded in the form of wavelengths and their intensities with high precision in space and time. Light is a mild trigger that does not permanently contaminate targeted samples. Its energy can be reversibly transformed into molecular motion, polarity, or flexibility changes. This leads to sophisticated functions at the supramolecular and macroscopic levels, from light-triggered nanomaterials to photocontrol over biological systems. New methods and molecular adapters of light are reported almost daily. Recently reported applications of photoresponsive systems, particularly azobenzenes, spiropyrans, diarylethenes, and indigoids, for smart materials and photocontrol of biological setups are described herein with the aim to demonstrate that the 21st century has become the Age of Enlightenment-"Le siècle des Lumières"-in molecular sciences.
