Structural Diversity in White-Light-Emitting Hybrid Lead Bromide Perovskites

Hybrid Eu(II)-bromide scintillators with efficient 5d-4f bandgap transition for X-ray imaging

Luminescent metal halides are attracting growing attention as scintillators for X-ray imaging in safety inspection, medical diagnosis, etc. Here we present brand-new hybrid Eu(II)-bromide scintillators, 1D type [Et4N]EuBr3·MeOH and 0D type [Me4N]6Eu5Br16·MeOH, with spin-allowed 5d-4f bandgap transition emission toward simplified carrier transport during scintillation process. The 1D/0D structures with edge/face -sharing [EuBr6]4- octahedra further contribute to lowing bandgaps and enhancing quantum confinement effect, enabling efficient scintillation performance (light yield ~73100 ± 800 Ph MeV-1, detect limit ~18.6 nGy s-1, X-ray afterglow ~ 1% @ 9.6 μs). We demonstrate the X-ray imaging with 27.3 lp mm-1 resolution by embedding Eu(II)-based scintillators into AAO film. Our results create the new family of low-dimensional rare-earth-based halides for scintillation and related optoelectronic applications.

Pressure-controlled free exciton and self-trapped exciton emission in quasi-one-dimensional hybrid lead bromides

Hybrid metal halides represent a novel type of semiconductor light emitters with intriguing excitonic emission properties, including free exciton emission and self-trapped exciton emission. Achieving precise control over these two excitonic emissions in hybrid metal halides is highly desired yet remains challenging. Here, the complete transformation from intrinsically broadband self-trapped exciton emission to distinctively sharp free exciton emission in a quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halide (C2H10N2)8[Pb4Br18]·6Br with a ribbon width of n = 4, is successfully achieved based on high-pressure method. During compression, pressure-induced phonon hardening continuously reduces exciton-phonon coupling, therefore suppressing excitonic localization and quenching the original self-trapped exciton emission. Notably, further compression triggers excitonic delocalization to induce intense free exciton emission, accompanied with reduced carrier effective masses and improved charge distribution. Controlled high-pressure investigations indicate that the ribbon width of n > 2 is necessary to realize excitonic delocalization and generate free exciton emissions in similar quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halides. This work presents an important photophysical process of excitonic transitions from self-trapped exciton emission to free exciton emission in quasi-one-dimensional hybrid metal halides without chemical regulation, promoting the rational synthesis of hybrid metal halides with desired excitonic emissions.

Coupled Kite-to-Square Distortion Transition and Physical Properties in 2D Lead Halide Perovskite

2D lead halide perovskites showcase diverse electrical and optoelectrical properties due to their adaptable structural distortion, which dictates the symmetry characteristics of the material. To accommodate the geometric shape of the cation, the inorganic layer of the 2D perovskite often undergoes specific distortions such as lead-halide bond length elongation/compression and lead atom displacement. The resultant distortion manifests as a quadrilateral shape formed by Pb atoms from four adjacent four octahedrons. The degree of distortion increases as the quadrilateral deviates further from a square shape and vice versa. This quadrilateral shape not only visually represents the magnitude of distortion but also confirms its direction. During the transition from kite to square distortion under external stimuli, the positions of the Pb atoms vividly illustrate the symmetry-breaking process, corresponding to a shift from high to low symmetry states. The electrical and optoelectronic properties, including ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, piezoelectricity, nonlinear optical properties, and characteristics related to bulky photovoltaic effects, some of them exhibit direction dependence nature. This perspective employed a visible structural distortion approach to elucidate symmetry breaking and coupling distortion transitions with eight optoelectronic physical properties in 2D layered perovskite. We review recent research advancements and outline current challenges that help us to understand the structure-property relationship of 2D perovskite.

CsPbBrxCl3-x Solid Solutions: Understanding the Relationship between Lattice Expansion and Optical Properties

All-inorganic halide perovskite semiconductors have received extensive attention due to their excellent photoelectronic conversion efficiency. Prior studies have reported on compounds CsPbBr3 and CsPbCl3. However, the transition phases between them have not been systematically studied. Here, a series of large-size single crystals of CsPbBrxCl3-x (x = 0-3) were successfully grown by the Bridgman method, which proves that the Br and Cl atoms can be miscible in any proportion in the solid solution system, and the change of lattice parameters conforms to Vegard's law. Also, the bandgap and light emission were studied. It is found that the band gap (2.90-2.29 eV) and photoluminescence characteristics (from blue light to green light) can be effectively tuned by adjusting the content of the Br atom. These results provide valuable guidance for the development and optimization of photoelectronic semiconductors that can meet different practical demands.

Three-State Dielectric Switching within a Narrow Temperature Range in Isopropylammonium Lead Iodide, a One-Dimensional Perovskite with Polar Phase

The phenomenon of dielectric switching has garnered considerable attention due to its potential applications in electronic and photonic devices. Typically, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, HOIPs, exhibit a binary (low-high) dielectric state transition, which, while useful, represents only the tip of the iceberg in terms of functional relevance. One way to boost the versatility of applications is the discovery of materials capable of nonbinary switching schemes, such as three-state dielectric switching. The ideal candidate for that task would exhibit a trio of attributes: two reversible, first-order phase transitions across three distinct crystal phases, minimal thermal hysteresis, and pronounced, step-like variations in dielectric permittivity, with a substantial change in its real part. Here, we demonstrate a one-dimensional lead halide perovskite with the formula (CH3)2C(H)NH3)PbI3, abbreviated as ISOPrPbI3, that fulfills these criteria and demonstrates three-state dielectric switching within a narrow temperature range of ca. 45 K. Studies on ISOPrPbI3 also revealed the polar nature of the low-temperature phase III below 266 K through pyrocurrent experiments, and the noncentrosymmetric character of the intermediate phase II and low-temperature phase III is confirmed via second harmonic generation measurements. Additionally, luminescence studies of ISOPrPbI3 have demonstrated combined broadband and narrow emission properties. The introduction of ISOPrPbI3 as a three-state dielectric switch not only addresses the limitations posed by the wide thermal gap between dielectric states in previous materials but also opens new avenues for the development of nonbinary dielectric switchable materials.

(C8H7N2O2)2[Bi2Br8]·2H2O and (C8H7N2O2)6[Bi2Cl10]Cl2·2H2O: Exploring Birefringent Crystals in Hybrid Halide Systems

In this study, new hybrid birefringent crystals of (C8H7N2O2)2[Bi2Br8]·2H2O and (C8H7N2O2)6[Bi2Cl10]Cl2·2H2O were successfully synthesized by introducing a new birefringent group [C8H7N2O2]+ by a simple aqueous solution evaporation method. They crystallize in the P21/n space group, and their structure consists mainly of the π-conjugated group [C8H7N2O2]+ and the octahedron centered on Bi3+. By first-principles calculations, the birefringence response comes from the [C8H7N2O2]+ group with a planar π-conjugated structure. Meanwhile, the synthesis, structure, first-principles calculations, and optical properties are reported in this paper.

The luminescent properties of metal halides are determined by the inorganic framework and solvent molecules

The luminescent properties of metal halides are usually considered to be determined by the inorganic framework. In this work, we propose that the luminescent properties of metal halides are determined by both the inorganic framework and the solvent [Denoted as (inorganic framework + n·solvent molecules), n = 0, 1, 2…] through the abundant solvatochromic or thermochromic effect of tetrabutylammonium lead bromides [TPB, T = TBA (tetrabutylammonium), P = Pb (lead), B = Br (bromide)] containing water (H2O) and ethanol (EtOH). One-dimensional (1D) TPB can form ligands of [[Pb5Br18]8- + 2H2O(H)], [[Pb5Br18]8- + 2H2O(H) + 2H2O] and [[Pb5Br18]8- + 2EtOH] by solvent or heat treatment has completely different luminescent properties resulting from different solvents. They exhibit broad spectral emission due to strong electron-phonon coupling, as do other 1D metal halides. However, the 1D TPB containing only [[Pb5Br18]8- achieves extremely rare narrow-band green emission, with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 21 nm at room temperature and 8 nm at low temperature, color gamut covers 95 % of the International Telecommunication Union recommendation 2020 standard. This work provides new guidance for the modulation of photophysical properties of metal halides, as well as new materials for the display and smart materials fields.

Phase Transition and Luminescent Property Change Induced by Different Organic Cations in One-Dimensional Double Perovskites

Double perovskites (DPs) have attracted attention in the field of luminescence due to their inherent broadband emission of self-trapping excitons. In this work, we choose [(CH3)3NCH2CHCH2]+ and [CH3CHOHCH2NH2]+ as organic cations to synthesize two new organic-inorganic hybrid DPs, [(CH3)3NCH2CHCH2]2KInCl6 (1) and [CH3CHOHCH2NH2]2KInCl6 (2). The [KCl6]3- and [InCl6]3- octahedra are interchangeably connected by sharing two opposite faces, forming a one-dimensional coordination chain. Each K atom coordinates with six chlorine atoms in 1, while it coordinates with two oxygen atoms in addition to the six chlorine atoms in 2. The coordination between ions K and O in compound 2 may have significantly reduced its luminescence. As a result, compound 1 shows bright-yellow light with a quantum yield of more than 90%, while 2 shows weak blue light with a quantum yield of only 0.98%. In addition, different from no phase transition found in 2, 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition at 324/307 K in the heating-cooling cycle. Through structural and spectral analysis and density functional theory calculation, we conclude that the larger degree of [InCl6]3- octahedral distortion and the larger anion distance (In···In) also cause the PLQY of compound 1 to be higher than that of compound 2.

Boosted Second Harmonic Generation of a Chiral Hybrid Lead Halide Resonant to Charge Transfer Exciton from Metal Halide Octahedra to Ligand

Chiral hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) offer an ideal platform for the advancement of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials owing to their inherent noncentrosymmetric structures. The enhancement of optical nonlinearity of chiral HOMHs could be achieved by matching the free exciton and/or self-trapped exciton energy levels with desired NLO frequencies. However, the current scarcity of resonance modes and low resonance ratio hamper the further improvements of NLO performance. Herein, we propose a new resonant channel of charge transfer (CT) excited states from metal halide polyhedra to organic ligand to boost the second-order optical nonlinearity of chiral HOMHs. The model lead halide (C7H10N)PbBr3 (C7H10N=1-ethylpyridinium) exhibits a drastically enhanced second harmonic generation in resonance to the deep CT exciton energy, with intensity of up to 111.0 times that of KDP and 10.9 times that of urea. The effective NLO coefficient has been determined to be as high as ~40.2 pm V-1, balanced with a large polarization ratio and high laser damage threshold. This work highlights the contribution of organic ligands in the construction of a resonant channel for enhancing second-order NLO coefficients of metal halides, and thus provides guidelines for designing new chiral HOMHs materials for advanced nonlinear photonic applications.

Promoting the formation of metal-carboxylate coordination to modulate the dimensionality of ultrastable lead halide hybrids

Crystal engineering of metal halide hybrids is critical to investigate their structure-property relationship and advance their photophysical applications, but there have been limited efforts to employ coordination chemistry to precisely control the dimensionality of metal halide sublattices. Herein, we present a coordination-assembly synthetic strategy developed for the rational modulation of lead halide dimensionality, realizing the transition from 2D to 3D architectures. This manipulation is achieved by utilizing three organocarboxylates featuring the identical cyclohexane backbone unit. Specifically, the 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylate ligands facilitate the formation of quasi-2D layered structures, characterized by weakly corrugated and strongly corrugated lead halide layers, respectively. Importantly, the introduction of the 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexacarboxylate ligand results in coordination architectures featuring 3D lead chloride/bromide sublattices. The formation of the 3D coordination architectures templated by the 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexacarboxylate ligand affords extended wavelength coverage and superior carrier transport properties compared to their quasi-2D layered analogues. Importantly, both the 2D and 3D lead halide-based coordination polymers exhibit high aqueous stability over a wide pH range, outperforming the conventional ionic-bound lead halides. Notably, the chemically stable 3D lead bromide exhibits efficient photocatalytic ethylbenzene oxidation with the conversion rate of 498 μmol g-1 h-1, substantially higher than its 2D lead bromide counterparts. This work highlights the important role of coordination chemistry in the rational design of metal halide hybrids, which is crucial for advancing their photophysical properties and applications.

Large-n quasi-phase-pure two-dimensional halide perovskite: A toolbox from materials to devices

Despite their excellent environmental stability, low defect density, and high carrier mobility, large-n quasi-two-dimensional halide perovskites (quasi-2DHPs) feature a limited application scope because of the formation of self-assembled multiple quantum wells (QWs) due to the similar thermal stabilities of large-n phases. However, large-n quasi-phase-pure 2DHPs (quasi-PP-2DHPs) can solve this problem perfectly. This review discusses the structures, formation mechanisms, and photoelectronic and physical properties of quasi-PP-2DHPs, summarises the corresponding single crystals, thin films, and heterojunction preparation methods, and presents the related advances. Moreover, we focus on applications of large-n quasi-PP-2DHPs in solar cells, photodetectors, lasers, light-emitting diodes, and field-effect transistors, discuss the challenges and prospects of these emerging photoelectronic materials, and review the potential technological developments in this area.

Copper-Sulfur-Nitrogen Cluster Providing a Local Proton for Efficient Carbon Dioxide Photoreduction

Atomically precise Cu clusters are highly desirable as catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), and they provide an appropriate model platform for elaborating their structure-activity relationship. However, an efficient overall photocatalytic CO2 RR with H2 O using assembled Cu-cluster aggregates as single component photocatalyst has not been reported. Herein, we report a stable crystalline Cu-S-N cluster photocatalyst with local protonated N-H groups (denoted as Cu6 -NH). The catalyst exhibits suitable photocatalytic redox potentials, high structural stability, active catalytic species, and a narrow band gap, which account for its outstanding photocatalytic CO2 RR performance under visible light, with ≈100 % selectivity for CO evolution. Remarkably, systematic isostructural Cu-cluster control experiments, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the protonated pyrimidine N atoms in the Cu6 -NH cluster act as a proton relay station, providing a local proton during the photocatalytic CO2 RR. This efficiently lowers the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate, which is the rate-limiting step, efficiently enhancing the photocatalytic performance. This work lays the foundation for the development of atomically precise metal-cluster-based photocatalysts.

Pressure Coupled Lanthanide Ion Doping to Enhance Optical Properties in BaTiO3

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) typically give broadband photoluminescence emission with a large Stokes shift, which is important for the enhancement of the optical properties of materials. Here, low-dimensional La-doped BaTiO3 nanocrystals with defects are prepared using supercritical CO2 (SC CO2 ). The generation of the STEs is facilitated by doping La3+ ions and introducing CO2 pressure, which effectively enhance the luminescence intensity of BaTiO3 . This discovery shows that the La ion doping concentration can modulate the photoluminescence of BaTiO3 nanocrystals under pressure. This work deepens the understanding of the influence of rare-earth-doped luminescent materials under pressure and provides insight to improve the capabilities of optical devices.

The halogen substitution strategy of inorganic skeletons triggers dielectric and band gap regulation of hybrid perovskites

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) with dielectric switching functions have aroused comprehensive scientific interest, benefitting from their promising applications in sensors and information storage. However, to date, most of these materials discovered thus far possess a single function and are limited in their applicability, failing to meet the requirements of diverse applications. Moreover, the discovery of these materials has been largely serendipitous. Building multifunctional OIHPs with dielectric switching and semiconductors remains a daunting task. In this context, by introducing [C7H16N]+ as cations and in combination with lead halide with semiconducting properties, two OIHPs [C7H16N]PbI3 (1) and [C7H16N]PbBr3 (2) ([C7H16N]+ = (cyclopropylmethyl) trimethylammonium) have been successfully designed. They have dielectric switching properties close to 253 and 279 K and semiconducting behavior with band gaps of 2.67 and 3.22 eV. The phase transition temperature increased by 26 K through halogen substitution. In summary, our findings in this study provide insights into the application of the halogen substitution regulation strategy and open up new possibilities for designing perovskite semiconductors with dielectric switching functionality.

A Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskite With Heat Switching Birefringence

Birefringent crystals that can switch light polarization have important applications in optoelectronics. In the last decades, birefringence is mostly optimized by chemical strategies. Recently, switching birefringence by physical means has attracted much attention. Here, this work reports the observation of heat switching birefringence in a 2D layered hybrid halide perovskite (C2 N3 H4 )2 PbCl4 ((C2 N3 H4 )+ =1,2,4-triazolium). This heat switching birefringence leads to a significant change in the interference color for the crystal plate under the illumination of orthogonal polarized light. Structure analyses reveal a heat dependent structure transition in (C2 N3 H4 )2 PbCl4 , whose birefringence is switched by the change in the distortion degree of PbCl6 octahedron. This discovery may be beneficial to the further development of stimuli-responsive polarization optical devices.

A New Metal-Free Molecular Perovskite-Related Single Crystal with Quantum Wire Structure for High-Performance X-Ray Detection

The family of metal-free molecular perovskites, an emerging novel class of eco-friendly semiconductor, welcomes a new member with a unique 1D hexagonal perovskite structure. Lowering dimensionality at molecular level is a facile strategy for crystal structure conversion, optoelectronic property regulation, and device performance optimization. Herein, the study reports the design, synthesis, packing structure, and photophysical properties of the 1D metal-free molecular perovskite-related single crystal, rac-3APD-NH4 I3 (rac-3APD= racemic-3-Aminopiperidinium), that features a quantum wire structure formed by infinite chains of face-sharing NH4 I6 octahedra, enabling strong quantum confinement with strongly self-trapped excited (STE) states to give efficient warm orange emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as ≈41.6%. The study accordingly unveils its photoexcited carrier dynamics: rac-3APD-NH4 I3 relaxes to STE state with a short lifetime of 10 ps but decays to ground state by emitting photons with a relatively longer lifetime of 560 ps. Additionally, strong quantum confinement effect is conducive to charge transport along the octahedral channels that enables the co-planar single-crystal X-ray detectors to achieve a sensitivity as high as 1556 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 . This work demonstrates the first case of photoluminescence mechanism and photophysical dynamics of 1D metal-free perovskite-related semiconductor, as well as the promise for high-performance X-ray detector.

Broadband emission originating from the stereochemical expression of 6s2 lone pairs in two-dimensional lead bromide perovskites

The stereochemical expression of the 6s2 lone pair on the lead atom has a significant impact on the crystal structures and physical properties of lead halide perovskites. Two-dimensional (2D) lead bromide perovskites often exhibit a broadband emission, yet the structural origin of the broadband emission has been under debate. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a 2D lead bromide hybrid (4-chlorophenylammonium)2PbBr4 that consists of a combination of the octahedral unit PbBr6 and the rarely observed capped octahedral unit PbBr7 through corner-sharing and edge-sharing linkages. The seven-coordination geometry indicates a strong stereo-active lone pair on the Pb2+ cation. By comparing this structure with two representative 2D perovskites, (benzylammonium)2PbBr4 and (4-aminotetrahydropyran)2PbBr4, we establish how the lone pair expression affects the local coordination geometry of the Pb2+ cation and the resulting optical and electronic properties. As the Pb-Br bond length increases, the lone pair expression leads to off-centering displacement of Pb2+ within the octahedra and then the formation of seven-coordination capped octahedra. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the off-centering distorted octahedra and capped octahedra are due to the asymmetric distribution of the Pb electrons that have both s and p orbital characteristics. Spectroscopic studies show the photoluminescence spectra evolving from narrowband emission to broadband emission with increasing LPE, as well as softer and more anharmonic lattice vibrations that facilitate exciton self-trapping. Our results demonstrate that lone pairs could be a powerful design rule for developing light emitting materials.

Dimension-Dependent Phase Transitions, Ferroelasticity, and Photoluminescence in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Materials

[(CH3)3P(CH2)2OH]2Cd3(SCN)8 (1) and [(CH3)3P(CH2)2OH]Cd(SCN)3 (2) were obtained with completely different structures and properties under the same synthesis conditions. Compound 1, showing green fluorescence, has a rare three-dimensional 4,6-connected fsh topology having (43.63)2(46.66.83) Schläfli notation, while compound 2 with blue-violet phosphorescence displays a one-dimensional perovskite structure with an infinite {[Cd(SCN)3]-}∞ chain and exhibits both ferroelastic and dielectric switching characteristics.

Broadband red emission from one-dimensional hexamethonium lead bromide perovskitoid

Broadband emissions from low-dimensional hybrid perovskites have aroused intense interest. However, the achievement of broadband red emission in lead halide perovskites remains challenging. Herein, we report a one-dimensional (1D) hybrid lead bromide perovskitoid, (HM)Pb2Br6 (HM = hexamethonium), featuring a corrugated "3 × 3" [Pb2Br6]2- chain. The unique structure results in intriguingly red emission peaking at 692 nm, with a PLQY of around 6.24%. Our spectroscopic and computational studies reveal that the red emission derives from self-localized Pb23+, Pb3+ and Br2- species confined within the inorganic lead bromide lattice that function as radiative centres. This finding will benefit the design of perovskite systems for efficient red emission.

Intrinsic Ferromagnetic Semiconductors with High Saturation Magnetization from Hybrid Perovskites

Ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMS) enable simultaneous control of both charge and spin transport of charge carriers, and they have emerged as a class of highly desirable but rare materials for applications in spin field-effect transistors and quantum computing. Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with high compositional adjustability and structural versatility can offer unique benefits in the design of FMS but has not been fully explored. Here, a series of molecular FMSs based on the 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite structure, namely (2ampy)CuCl4 , (3ampy)CuCl4 , and (4ampy)CuCl4 , is demonstrated, which exhibits high saturation magnetization, dramatic temperature-dependent conductivity change, and tunable ferromagnetic resonance. Magnetic measurements reveal a high saturation magnetization up to 18.56 emu g-1 for (4ampy)CuCl4 , which is one of the highest value among reported hybrid FMSs to date. Conductivity studies of the three FMSs demonstrate that the smaller adjacent octahedron distance in the 2D layer results in higher conductivity. Systematic ferromagnetic resonance investigation shows that the gyromagnetic ratio and Landau factor values are strongly dependent on the types of organic cations used. This work demonstrates that 2D hybrid perovskite materials can simultaneously possess both tunable long-range ferromagnetic ordering and semiconductivity, providing a straightforward strategy for designing and synthesizing high-performance intrinsic FMSs.

Chemistry in the Molten State: Opportunities for Designing and Tuning the Emission Properties of Halide Perovskites

A series of monolayered lead halide hybrid perovskites (HO2C(CH2)n-1NH3)2PbX4, named (Cn)2PbX4 (n = 4-6, X = Cl, Br), exhibiting a low congruent melting temperature (Tm) (Tm = 130 °C for (C4)2PbBr4), high stability in the molten state, and whitish type emission, are reported. From the synthesis in the molten state, rare solid solutions of mixed organic cations (Cn1-xCn'x)2PbX4 (n, n' = 4-6; X = Cl, Br; 0 ≤ x ≤1) as well as solid solutions of mixed halides (Cn)2Pb(X1-yX'y)4 (n = 4-6; X, X' = Cl, Br; 0 ≤ y ≤1) have been prepared and characterized (thermal behavior, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), photoluminescence properties). The impact of substitutions is significant on the thermal properties, lowering the Tm down to 100 °C for (C4)2Pb(Br0.25Cl0.75)4. The emission properties are slightly tuned in the case of mixed organic cation systems, whereas modifications are more dramatic in the case of mixed halide systems, leading to emission properties through the entire visible region. These results illustrate the great opportunities offered by the congruent melting properties of halide perovskites allowing syntheses in the molten state.

Temperature Dependent Hydrogen Bond Toward High Emission in an Emerging Indium-Based Perovskite

Low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) with broadband emission attract immense scientific interest due to their potential application for the next generation of solid-state lighting. However, due to low exciton utilization, organic cations generally adjust structure rather than contribute the band edge to affect optical properties. Based on this, OIHPs are usually allowed to obtain a low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, a good charge transfer carrier (p-phenylenediamine, PPDA) as organic cation is rationally employed and a novel indium-based perovskite is synthesized. By coupling with H2 O molecules, a strong interaction between organic and inorganic components is realized by hydrogen bonding, which has good transportability and greatly improves the exciton utilization. The regions of hydrogen bonding show high electron mobility, combined with the induced recombination center, improving the progress of charge relaxation. As a result, the regulation of hydrogen bond strength based on the microstructure optimization directly determines the optical emission intensity, realizing nearly 100% PLQY. Further, the polyhydrogen bond structure makes each component a stronger interaction, showing high stability in polar, organic, and acidic solvent, as well as long-term storing, which represents one of the highest overall performances for lighting in OIHPs.

Hybrid Double Perovskite Derived Halides Based on Bi and Alkali Metals (K, Rb): Diverse Structures, Tunable Optical Properties and Second Harmonic Generation Responses

Double perovskites (DP) have attracted extensive attention due to their rich structures and wide application prospects in the field of optoelectronics. Here, we report 15 new Bi-based double perovskite derived halides with the general formula of A2 BBiX6 (A=organic cationic ligand, B=K or Rb, X=Br or I). These materials are synthesized using organic ligands to coordinate with metal ions with a sp3 oxygen, and diverse structure types have been obtained with distinct dimensionalities and connectivity modes. The optical band gaps of these phases can be tuned by changing the halide, the organic ligand and the alkali metal, varying from 2.0 to 2.9 eV. The bromide phases exhibit increasing photoluminescence (PL) intensity with decreasing temperature, while the PL intensity of iodide phases changes nonmonotonically with temperature. Because the majority of these phases are non-centrosymmetric, second harmonic generation (SHG) responses are also measured for selected non-centrosymmetric materials, showing different particle-size-dependent trends. Our findings give rise to a series of new structural types to the DP family, and provide a powerful synthetic handle for symmetry breaking.

Temperature dependence of radiative and non-radiative decay in the luminescence of one-dimensional pyridinium lead halide hybrids

The photoluminescence properties of organic-inorganic pyridinium lead bromide [(pyH)PbBr3] and iodide [(pyH)PbI3] compounds were investigated as a function of temperature. The inorganic substructure consists of face-sharing chains of PbX6 octahedra. Diffuse reflectance spectra of the compounds show low energy absorption features consistent with charge transfer transitions from the PbX3 chains to the pyridinium cations. Both compounds display extremely weak luminescence at room temperature that becomes strongly enhanced upon cooling to 77 K. Broad, featureless low energy emission (λem > 600 nm) in both compounds have large Stokes shifts [1.1 eV for (pyH)PbBr3 and 0.46 eV for (pyH)PbI3] and are assigned to transitions from self-trapped excitons on the inorganic chains whereas emission at higher energy in (pyH)PbBr3 (λem = 450 nm) is assigned to luminescence from a free exciton state. Analysis of data from temperature-dependent luminescence intensity measurements gives activation energies (Ea) for non-radiative decay of the self-trapped excitons in (pyH)PbBr3 and (pyH)PbI3, (Ea = 0.077 eV and 0.103 eV, respectively) and for the free exciton in (pyH)PbBr3 (Ea = 0.010 eV). Analysis of temperature dependent luminescence lifetime data indicates another non-radiative decay process in (pyH)PbI3 at higher temperatures (Ea = 0.17 eV). A large increase in the luminescence lifetime of (pyH)PbI3 below 80 K is consistent with thermalization between triplet sublevels. Analysis of the luminescence power dependence for (pyH)PbI3 shows superlinear response suggestive of quenching by static traps.

A Two-Dimensional Hybrid Lead Bromide Ferroelectric Semiconductor with an Out-of-Plane Polarization

A two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) material with out-of-plane ferroelectricity is the key to the miniaturization of vertical-sandwich-type ferroelectric optoelectronic devices. However, 2D OIHP ferroelectrics with out-of-plane polarization are still scarce, and effective design strategies are lacking. Herein, we report a novel 2D Dion-Jacobson perovskite ferroelectric semiconductor synthesized by a rigid-to-flexible cationic tailoring strategy, achieving an out-of-plane polarization of 1.7 μC/cm2 and high photoresponse. Integrating out-of-plane ferroelectricity with excellent photoelectric properties affords a promising platform to investigate ferroelectricity-related effects in vertical optoelectronic devices.

Impact of the organic cation on the band-edge emission of two-dimensional lead-bromide perovskites

Organic-inorganic low-dimensional layered metal-halide perovskites are semiconductors in which the optoelectronic properties can be tuned by the material composition and the design of the layered architecture. While the electronic band structure is mainly determined by the inorganic octahedra lattice, the binding and conformation of the organic cations induces related lattice distortions that can break the symmetry and lead to the splitting of the exciton energy levels, and influence the dielectric confinement. Furthermore, organic-induced lattice deformations lead to offsets in k-space (where k is the wavevector) that go along with the exciton energy level splitting. Hence, the electronic transitions between these levels require the momentum contribution of phonons, and contributions of phonons in the exciton recombination dynamics result in thermal broadening of the emission linewidth. In this work, we investigate the band-edge emission of two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper lead-bromide perovskites synthesized with different organic cations that vary in their binding head group and their alkyl chain length. We find several peaks in the low-temperature photoluminescence spectra, and the number of peaks in the band-edge emission and their decay dynamics depend strongly on the type of organic cation in the material, which we relate to the difference in the inorganic lattice distortions that the cations induce. For two-dimensional layered perovskites with mainly in-plane distortions, induced by short primary ammonium molecules, we find a two-fold splitting of the band edge emission at low temperatures. If also out-of-plane distortions are present, as for the long-chain primary ammoniums, a three-fold splitting is observed. Interestingly, the low-energy peaks of the split series merge into the highest energy peak with increasing temperature. Thermal broadening analysis of the temperature-dependent photoluminescence linewidth in the structures with out-of-plane distortions yields energies that are larger than those reported for the inorganic lattice phonons. This indicates the involvement of either high-frequency oscillations involving the organic cations, or the broadening might be related to higher order phonon scattering processes in the excitonic recombination process. The strong directionality of the phonon modes in the octahedral lattice could promote the involvement of multiple electron-phonon scattering processes in the exciton relaxation dynamics, for example involving modes with orthogonal directionality.

Circular Polarized Light Emission in Chiral Inorganic Nanomaterials

Chiral inorganic nanostructures strongly interact with photons changing their polarization state. The resulting circularly polarized light emission (CPLE) has cross-disciplinary importance for a variety of chemical/biological processes and is essential for development of chiral photonics. However, the polarization effects are often complex and their interpretation is dependent on the several structural parameters of the chiral nanostructure. CPLE in nanostructured media has multiple origins and several optical effects are typically convoluted into a single output. Analyzing CPLE data obtained for nanoclusters, nanoparticles, nanoassemblies, and nanocomposites from metals, chalcogenides, perovskite, and other nanostructures, it is shown here that there are several distinct groups of nanomaterials for which CPLE is dominated either by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) or circularly polarized scattering (CPS); there are also many nanomaterials for which they are comparable. The following points are also demonstrated: 1) CPL and CPS contributions involve light-matter interactions at different structural levels; 2) contribution from CPS is especially strong for nanostructured microparticles, nanoassemblies, and composites; and 3) engineering of materials with strongly polarized light emission requires synergistic implementation of CPL and CPS effects. These findings are expected to guide development of CPLE materials in a variety of technological fields, including 3D displays, information storage, biosensors, optical spintronics, and biological probes.

Structural diversity in proline-based lead bromide chiral perovskites

Lead halide hybrid perovskites incorporating chiral organic cations attract considerable attention due to their promising application in multifarious optoelectronic devices. However, the examples of chiral hybrid perovskites are still limited, which greatly impedes their further studies in various optoelectronic fields. Herein, we report on new low-dimensional lead-halide hybrid perovskites incorporating the enantiopure chiral α-amino acid L-proline. Two hybrid perovskites (L-proH)PbBr₃·H₂O (Pro-PbBr₃) and (L-proH)₄Pb₃Br₁₀·4H₂O (Pro-Pb₃Br₁₀) have been synthesized by employing different ratios of organic and inorganic precursors. According to structural analysis, the inorganic sublattice of compound Pro-PbBr₃ is built of one-dimensional (1D) [PbX₃]_∞^n- lead halide chains, whereas the inorganic sublattice of compound Pro-Pb₃Br₁₀ is built upon a rare two-dimensional (2D) [Pb₃Br₁₀]_∞^4n- honeycomb-type inorganic framework. Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed an important role of various hydrogen bonding interactions in providing the binding between organic and inorganic parts of these hybrid perovskites. The optical band gap values of new hybrid perovskites as estimated using the Tauc plot approach are 4.19 eV (Pro-PbBr₃) and 4.13 eV (Pro-Pb₃Br₁₀). Also, new compounds display low-temperature broadband photoluminescence which can be attributed to the self-trapped excitons. These results show the potential of α-proline for constructing novel and highly demanded chiral hybrid perovskites, which will hold great promise for further optoelectronic applications.

Chemical Behavior and Local Structure of the Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson Alloyed Pb/Sn Bromide 2D Perovskites

The alloyed lead/tin (Pb/Sn) halide perovskites have gained significant attention in the development of tandem solar cells and other optoelectronic devices due to their widely tunable absorption edge. To gain a better understanding of the intriguing properties of Pb/Sn perovskites, such as their anomalous bandgap's dependence on stoichiometry, it is important to deepen the understanding of their chemical behavior and local structure. Herein, we investigate a series of two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase alloyed Pb/Sn bromide perovskites using butylammonium (BA) and 3-(aminomethyl)pyridinium (3AMPY) as the spacer cations: (BA)₂(MA)_n-1Pb_xSn_n-xBr_3n+1 (n = 1-3) and (3AMPY)(MA)_n-1Pb_xSn_n-xBr_3n+1 (n = 1-3) through a solution-based approach. Our results show that the ratio and site preference of Pb/Sn atoms are influenced by the layer thickness (n) and spacer cations (A'), as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Solid-state ¹H, ¹¹⁹Sn, and ²⁰⁷Pb NMR spectroscopy analysis shows that the Pb atoms prefer the outer layers in n = 3 members: (BA)₂(MA)Pb_xSn_n-xBr₁₀ and (3AMPY)(MA)Pb_xSn_n-xBr₁₀. Layered 2D DJ alloyed Pb/Sn bromide perovskites (3AMPY)(MA)_n-1Pb_xSn_n-xBr_3n+1 (n = 1-3) demonstrate much narrower optical band gaps, lower energy PL emission peaks, and longer carrier lifetimes compared to those of RP analogs. Density functional theory calculations suggest that Pb-rich alloys (Pb:Sn ∼4:1) for n = 1 compounds are thermodynamically favored over 50:50 (Pb:Sn ∼1:1) compositions. From grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we see that films in the RP phase orient parallel to the substrate, whereas for DJ cases, random orientations are observed relative to the substrate.

High-Temperature Ferroelasticity and Photoluminescence in a 2D Monolayer Perovskite Compound: (C5NH8Br)2PbBr4

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties and easy synthesis. As far as we know, most documented ferroelastics mainly focus on the 3D (three-dimensional) perovskites, the 2D monolayer perovskite ferroelastics are rarely reported before. In this work, we synthesized a 2D lead-based perovskite (C₅NH₁₃Br)₂PbBr₄ (1) (C₅NH₁₃Br = 5-bromoamylamine cation) by introducing flexible chain organic cations. The evolution of ferroelastic domains observed by a polarized light microscope confirms that compound 1 undergoes a ferroelastic phase transition at 392/384 K. In addition, its direct band gap is 2.877 eV. Interestingly, the material emits an attractive blue light (quantum yield 5.06%) under UV light. Three structural descriptors are introduced to quantitatively analyze the relationship between structural distortion and the shape of emission peak. This work provides a way to design multifunctional perovskite-type materials.

Near-90° Switch in the Polar Axis of Dion-Jacobson Perovskites by Halide Substitution

Ferroelectricity in two-dimensional hybrid (2D) organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) can be engineered by tuning the chemical composition of the organic or inorganic components to lower the structural symmetry and order-disorder phase change. Less efforts are made toward understanding how the direction of the polar axis is affected by the chemical structure, which directly impacts the anisotropic charge order and nonlinear optical response. To date, the reported ferroelectric 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) [PbI₄]^2- perovskites exhibit exclusively out-of-plane polarization. Here, we discover that the polar axis in ferroelectric 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites can be tuned from the out-of-plane (OOP) to the in-plane (IP) direction by substituting the iodide with bromide in the lead halide layer. The spatial symmetry of the nonlinear optical response in bromide and iodide DJ perovskites was probed by polarized second harmonic generation (SHG). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the switching of the polar axis, synonymous with the change in the orientation of the sum of the dipole moments (DMs) of organic cations, is caused by the conformation change of organic cations induced by halide substitution.

Design Rules for Obtaining Narrow Luminescence from Semiconductors Made in Solution

Solution-processed semiconductors are in demand for present and next-generation optoelectronic technologies ranging from displays to quantum light sources because of their scalability and ease of integration into devices with diverse form factors. One of the central requirements for semiconductors used in these applications is a narrow photoluminescence (PL) line width. Narrow emission line widths are needed to ensure both color and single-photon purity, raising the question of what design rules are needed to obtain narrow emission from semiconductors made in solution. In this review, we first examine the requirements for colloidal emitters for a variety of applications including light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, lasers, and quantum information science. Next, we will delve into the sources of spectral broadening, including "homogeneous" broadening from dynamical broadening mechanisms in single-particle spectra, heterogeneous broadening from static structural differences in ensemble spectra, and spectral diffusion. Then, we compare the current state of the art in terms of emission line width for a variety of colloidal materials including II-VI quantum dots (QDs) and nanoplatelets, III-V QDs, alloyed QDs, metal-halide perovskites including nanocrystals and 2D structures, doped nanocrystals, and, finally, as a point of comparison, organic molecules. We end with some conclusions and connections, including an outline of promising paths forward.

Regulating structural asymmetry via fluorination engineering in hybrid lead bromide perovskites

Here, we synthesized a pair of chiral two-dimensional lead bromide perovskites R-/S-(C₃H₇NF₃)₂PbBr₄ (1R/2S) using a H/F substitution strategy, which exhibit circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity. Compared with one-dimensional non-centrosymmetric (C₃H₁₀N)₃PbBr₅ with local asymmetry obtained by isopropylamine, 1R/2S show a centrosymmetric inorganic layer despite the global chiral space group. Density functional theory calculations show that the formation energy of 1R/2S is lower than that of (C₃H₁₀N)₃PbBr₅, which implies the improved moisture stability in photophysical properties and CPL activity.

Stable Sn-Based Hybrid Perovskite-Related Structures with Tunable Color Coordinates via Organic Cations in Low-Temperature Synthesis

Organic-inorganic Pb-free layered perovskites are efficient broadband emitters and thus are promising materials for lighting applications. However, their synthetic protocols require a controlled atmosphere, high temperature, and long preparation time. This hinders the potential tunability of their emission through organic cations, as is instead common practice in Pb-based structures. Here, we present a set of Sn-Br layered perovskite-related structures that display different chromaticity coordinates and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) up to 80%, depending on the choice of the organic monocation. We first develop a synthetic protocol that is performed under air and at 4 °C, requiring only a few steps. X-ray and 3D electron diffraction analyses show that the structures exhibit diverse octahedra connectivity (disconnected and face-sharing) and thus optical properties, while preserving the organic-inorganic layer intercalation. These results provide key insight into a previously underexplored strategy to tune the color coordinates of Pb-free layered perovskites through organic cations with complex molecular configurations.

Carriers, Quasi-particles, and Collective Excitations in Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites (HPs) are potential game-changing materials for a broad spectrum of optoelectronic applications ranging from photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, lasers to radiation detectors, ferroelectrics, thermoelectrics, etc. Underpinning this spectacular expansion is their fascinating photophysics involving a complex interplay of carrier, lattice, and quasi-particle interactions spanning several temporal orders that give rise to their remarkable optical and electronic properties. Herein, we critically examine and distill their dynamical behavior, collective interactions, and underlying mechanisms in conjunction with the experimental approaches. This review aims to provide a unified photophysical picture fundamental to understanding the outstanding light-harvesting and light-emitting properties of HPs. The hotbed of carrier and quasi-particle interactions uncovered in HPs underscores the critical role of ultrafast spectroscopy and fundamental photophysics studies in advancing perovskite optoelectronics.

Photophysical studies for Cu(i)-based halides: broad excitation bands and highly efficient single-component warm white-light-emitting diodes

Designing and synthesizing cuprous halide phosphors unifying efficient low-energy emission and a broad excitation band is still a great challenge. Herein, by rational component design, three novel Cu(i)-based metal halides, DPCu₄X₆ [DP = (C₆H₁₀N₂)₄(H₂PO₂)₆; X = Cl, Br, I], were synthesized by reacting p-phenylenediamine with cuprous halide (CuX), and they show similar structures, consisting of isolated [Cu₄X₆]^2- units separated by organic layers. Photophysical studies uncover that the highly localized excitons and rigid environment give rise to highly efficient yellow-orange photoluminescence in all compounds with the excitation band spanning from 240 to 450 nm. The bright PL in DPCu₄X₆ (X = Cl, Br) originates from self-trapped excitons due to the strong electron-phonon coupling. Intriguingly, DPCu₄I₆ features a dual-band emissive characteristic, attributed to the synergistic effect of halide/metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (X/MLCT) and triplet cluster-centered (³CC) excited states. Benefiting from the broadband excitation, a high-performance white-light emitting diode (WLED) with a high color rendering index of 85.1 was achieved using single-component DPCu₄I₆ phosphor. This work not only unveils the role of halogens in the photophysical processes of cuprous halides, but also provides new design principles for high-performance single-component WLEDs.

High-Tc 1D Phase-Transition Semiconductor Photoluminescent Material with Broadband Emission

One dimensional (1D) organic-inorganic halide hybrid perovskites have the advantages of excellent organic cation modifiability and diversity of inorganic framework structures, which cannot be ignored in the development of multi-functional phase-transition materials in photoelectric and photovoltaic devices. Here, we have successfully modified and synthesized an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite photoelectric multifunctional phase-transition material: [C₇ H₁₃ ONCH₂ F]⋅PbBr₃ (1). The synergistic effect of the order double disorder transition of organic cations and the change of the degree of distortion of the inorganic framework leads to its high temperature reversible phase-transition point of T_c =374 K/346 K and its ultra-low loss high-quality dielectric switch response. Through in-depth research and calculation, compound 1 also has excellent semiconductor characteristics with a band gap of 3.06 eV and the photoluminescence characteristics of self-trapped exciton (STE) broadband emission. Undoubtedly, this modification strategy provides a new choice for the research field of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite reversible phase-transition photoelectric multifunctional materials with rich coupling properties.

Revealing the impact of organic spacers and cavity cations on quasi-2D perovskites via computational simulations

Two-dimensional hybrid lead iodide perovskites based on methylammonium (MA) cation and butylammonium (BA) organic spacer-such as [Formula: see text]-are one of the most explored 2D hybrid perovskites in recent years. Correlating the atomistic profile of these systems with their optoelectronic properties is a challenge for theoretical approaches. Here, we employed first-principles calculations via density functional theory to show how the cation partially canceled dipole moments through the [Formula: see text] terminal impact the structural/electronic properties of the [Formula: see text] sublattices. Even though it is known that at high temperatures, the organic cation assumes a spherical-like configuration due to the rotation of the cations inside the cage, our results discuss the correct relative orientation according to the dipole moments for ab initio simulations at 0 K, correlating well structural and electronic properties with experiments. Based on the combination of relativistic quasiparticle correction and spin-orbit coupling, we found that the MA horizontal-like configuration concerning the inorganic sublattice surface leads to the best relationship between calculated and experimental gap energy throughout n = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 number of layers. Conversely, the dipole moments cancellation (as in BA-MA aligned-like configuration) promotes the closing of the gap energies through an electron depletion mechanism. We found that the anisotropy [Formula: see text] isotropy optical absorption conversion (as a bulk convergence) is achieved only for the MA horizontal-like configuration, which suggests that this configuration contribution is the majority in a scenario under temperature effects.

A semiconductive copper iodobismuthate hybrid: structure, optical properties and photocurrent response

Pursuits of new types of Pb-free heterometallic halides adequate for photovoltaic applications are still urgent but challenging. In this study, by using in situ-produced [(Me)₂-(DABCO)]²⁺ (DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane; Me = methyl) cations as structure-directing agents, we successfully constructed a non-perovskite copper iodobismuthate hybrid, namely [(Me)₂-(DABCO)]₂Cu₂Bi₂I₁₂ (1), which features discrete [Cu₂Bi₂I₁₂]^4- anionic moieties formed by the building units of [CuI₄] tetrahedra and [BiI₆] octahedra. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance analyses showed that compound 1 possesses semiconductive behaviors with a narrow optical bandgap of 1.80 eV. More importantly, it exhibits excellent photoelectric switching abilities, and its photocurrent density (2.30 μA cm^-2) far exceeds those of some high-performance halide-based counterparts. Different from many heterometallic analogues, noteworthily, it also has dispersive band structure and strong electronic coupling near the Fermi level, resulting in a material with small effective masses that may be responsible for the good photoelectricity. This study may offer new guidance for the design and synthesis of eco-friendly heterometallic halides with unique structures and desirable properties.

Factors influencing self-trapped exciton emission of low-dimensional metal halides

In this review, we mainly summarized the structure distortion, molecular engineering, electron–phonon coupling effect, external temperature and pressure, and metal ion doping that influence the self-trapped exciton emission of low-dimensional metal halides (LDMHs).

Crystal and Electronic Structures of New Two Dimensional 3-NH3-PyPbX4 Haloplumbate Materials

In this study, we explored both the crystal and electronic structures of new synthesized materials 3-NH₃-PyPbX₄ (X = Br, I). Both compounds are isostructural, and they crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c, with four formula units in the unit cell. According to the analysis of their electronic structures, both compounds are direct semiconductors with direct transitions between valence and conduction bands occurring at the k-points A, Z, and at about half of the distance between the k-points D/D1 and D1/E. An inspection of DOS reveals that, in both perovskites, the highest energy VBs are comprised mainly of electronic states of halogen anions, while the lowest states in the conduction band originate from lead orbitals. In addition, there are two flat bands composed of electronic states of carbon and nitrogen originating from the organic subsystems and presumably corresponding to the π* orbitals of 3-NH₃-C₅H₆N cations. Both materials demonstrate a broad luminescence emission. Two mechanisms of the radiative relaxation based on either self-trapped excitons or on charge transfers between inorganic and organic subsystems are discussed.

A promising 1D Cd-based hybrid perovskite-type for white-light emission with high-color-rendering index

A one dimensional (1D) perovskite-type (C6H7NBr)3[CdBr5] (abbreviated 4-BAPC) was synthesized by slow evaporation at room temperature (RT). 4-BAPC crystalizes in the monoclinic system with the space group P21/c. The 1D inorganic chains are formed by corner sharing CdBr6 octahedra. Thermal measurement shows that 4-BAPC is stable up to 190 °C. Optical characterization demonstrates that the grown crystal is an indirect bandgap material with a bandgap value of 3.93 eV, which is consistent with theoretical calculations. The electronic structure, calculated using density functional theory, reveals that the valence band originates from a combination of Br-4p orbitals and Cd-4d orbitals, whereas the conduction band originates from the Cd-5s orbitals. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows that the obtained material exhibits a broad-band white light emission with extra-high CRI of 98 under λ exc = 380 nm. This emission is mainly resulting from the self-trapped exciton recombinations within the inorganic CdBr6 octahedron, and the fluorescence within the organic conjugated ammonium salt.

Achieving Ultrahigh Efficiency Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Microcrystals via Ionic Liquids

Lead-free perovskites have gained much interest for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. But instability and low quantum efficiency significantly limit their prospects for future applications. Here, a general route is reported to synthesize highly stable lead-free perovskites on a large scale with remarkably enhanced quantum efficiency. Two typical vacancy-ordered double perovskites (Cs₂ ZrCl₆ and Cs₂ SnCl₆ ) and their corresponding Bi³⁺ or Sb³⁺ doped samples are synthesized in ionic liquids (ILs) solutions via a simple solution method. These prepared perovskite samples all exhibit high-quality crystalline structures and their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) all show an increase close to 200% compared to the samples prepared in the hydrochloric acid system. The PLQY of Sb-doped Cs₂ ZrCl₆ with excellent thermal stability can reach up to 90.2%, which is the highest value reported for this system (Cs₂ ZrCl₆ :Sb). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the corresponding interaction between the ILs and the samples can effectively improve the crystal quality and reduce energy loss. The potential applications of the prepared samples for high-performance white light-emitting diodes and optical anti-counterfeiting are also demonstrated. The findings provide a straightforward way to obtain ultrahigh quantum efficiency vacancy-ordered double perovskites with good thermal stability and excellent optoelectronic properties.

A warm-white light-emitting diode based on single-component emitter aromatic carbon nitride

Artificial lighting consumes almost one-fifth of global electricity. As an efficient solid-state lighting technology, white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) have received increasing attention. However, the white luminescence of the traditional WLEDs comes from multi-component emitters, which leads to complex device structure and unstable emitting color. Therefore, developing single-component materials with white-light electroluminescence is of significance for artificial lighting applications. Here, we fabricate single-component white-light electroluminescence devices based on an aromatic carbon nitride material and improve the performance of WLEDs by adjusting the carrier transport. The carbon nitride LEDs emit warm-white light, of which color coordinates and color temperature are (0.44, 0.52) and 3700 K. The optimized LEDs display a very low turn-on voltage of 3.2 V and achieve a milestone in the maximum luminance and external quantum efficiency of 1885 cd m⁻² and 1.20%. Our findings demonstrate the low-cost carbon nitride materials have promising potential for single-component WLEDs application.

Structural Descriptors to Correlate Pb Ion Displacement and Broadband Emission in 2D Halide Perovskites

2D hybrid lead halide perovskites exhibit versatile photoluminescent behaviors for narrowband to broadband emissions (BBEs) and have become attractive candidates for potential applications such as solid-state lighting. Establishing the relationship between the perovskite structural distortion and BBE is key but challenging in designing and optimizing the perovskite luminophores. Conventional attention is given to analyzing the intra-octahedron distortion of the [PbX₆]^4- (X = halide) unit that has not yet provided a clear structure-luminescence relationship. Herein, we introduce a descriptor, Pb displacement, to describe the inter-octahedron distortion to clarify the structure-emission relationship. The displacement of adjacent Pb centers represents the lattice distortion, which determines the broadband/narrowband emission instead of the octahedron distortion itself. We find a kite-type quadrilateral rule in (001) type 2D perovskites, that is, the degree to which the four octahedral central ions deviate from a square relates to the BBE. The kite-type arrangement of the Pb ions usually corresponds to the BBEs due to the large structure distortions. In contrast, the square-type arrangement of the Pb ions corresponds to the narrowband emissions because of the small distortions. The distortion descriptor magnifies the distortion scale, making it larger than the conventional one for the intra-octahedron distortion, which matches the general concept of excitons based on the scale of the crystal lattice. Therefore, the set of structural descriptors is better to correlate the perovskite structures and emission properties.
