Photoactive Complexes with Earth-Abundant Metals

0D/1D CuWO4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S S-scheme heterojunctions for full-spectrum bifunctional photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production

Integrating photocatalytic oxidation for pollutant removal with hydrogen production via photocatalysis presents a promising approach for sustainable water purification and renewable energy generation, circumventing the sluggish multi-electron transfer inherent in photocatalytic water oxidation. This study introduces novel zero-/one-dimensional (0D/1D) CuWO4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions that exhibit exceptional bifunctional capabilities in photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production under full-spectrum illumination. The degradation efficiency for tetracycline (TC) using 5 %-CuWO4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S reaches 94.3 % and 94.5 % within 60 min and 6 h, respectively, under ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and near-infrared (NIR) light. Notably, these 0D/1D CuWO4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S S-scheme heterojunctions demonstrate superior hydrogen production, achieving rates of 12442.03 μL g-1h-1 and 2418.54 μL g-1h-1 under UV-Vis light and NIR light irradiation, respectively-these rates are 2.3 times and 55.2 times higher than that of Mn0.3Cd0.7S alone. This performance enhancement is attributed to the intrinsic dimensional effects, transitions of transition metal d-d orbitals, and S-scheme hole/electron (h+/e-) separation characteristics. Additionally, experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have clarified the modulation of electronic configurations, band alignment, and interfacial interactions via 0D/1D S-scheme heterojunction engineering. This study sheds light on the electron transfer mechanism within S-scheme heterojunction and enhances the effectiveness, economy, and sustainability of recalcitrant pollutant removal and hydrogen production.

Efficient Ultraviolet Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Cerium Bromides

Ultraviolet circularly polarized luminescence (UV-CPL) with high photon energy shows great potential in polarized light sources and stereoselective photopolymerization. However, developing luminescent materials with high UV-CPL performance remains challenging. Here, we report a pair of rare earth Ce3+-based zero-dimensional (0D) chiral hybrid metal halides (HMHs), R/S-(C14H24N2)2CeBr7, which exhibits characteristic UV emissions derived from the Ce 5d-4f transition. The compounds show simultaneously high photoluminescent quantum yields of (32-39)% and large luminescent dissymmetry factor (|glum|) values of (1.3-1.5)×10-2. Thus, the figures of merits of R/S-(C14H24N2)2CeBr7 are calculated to be (4.5-5.8)×10-3, which are superior to the reported UV-CPL emissive materials. Additionally, nearly 91 % of their PL intensities at 300 K can be well preserved at 380 K (LED operating temperature) without phase transition or decomposition, demonstrating the excellent structural and optical thermal stabilities of R/S-(C14H24N2)2CeBr7. Based on these enantiomers, the fabricated UV-emitting CP-LEDs exhibit high polarization degrees of ±1.0 %. Notably, the UV-CPL generated from the devices can significantly trigger the enantioselective photopolymerization of diacetylene with remarkable stereoselectivity, and consequently yield polymerized products with the anisotropy factors of circular dichroism (gCD) up to ±3.9×10-2, outperforming other UV-CPL materials and demonstrating their great potential as UV-polarized light sources.

Time-Resolved X-ray Emission Spectroscopy and Synthetic High-Spin Model Complexes Resolve Ambiguities in Excited-State Assignments of Transition-Metal Chromophores: A Case Study of Fe-Amido Complexes

To fully harness the potential of abundant metal coordination complex photosensitizers, a detailed understanding of the molecular properties that dictate and control the electronic excited-state population dynamics initiated by light absorption is critical. In the absence of detectable luminescence, optical transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is the most widely employed method for interpreting electron redistribution in such excited states, particularly for those with a charge-transfer character. The assignment of excited-state TA spectral features often relies on spectroelectrochemical measurements, where the transient absorption spectrum generated by a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) electronic excited state, for instance, can be approximated using steady-state spectra generated by electrochemical ligand reduction and metal oxidation and accounting for the loss of absorptions by the electronic ground state. However, the reliability of this approach can be clouded when multiple electronic configurations have similar optical signatures. Using a case study of Fe(II) complexes supported by benzannulated diarylamido ligands, we highlight an example of such an ambiguity and show how time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements can reliably assign excited states from the perspective of the metal, particularly in conjunction with accurate synthetic models of ligand-field electronic excited states, leading to a reinterpretation of the long-lived excited state as a ligand-field metal-centered quintet state. A detailed analysis of the XES data on the long-lived excited state is presented, along with a discussion of the ultrafast dynamics following the photoexcitation of low-spin Fe(II)-Namido complexes using a high-spin ground-state analogue as a spectral model for the 5T2 excited state.

Iron-catalyzed decarboxylative radical addition to chiral azomethine imines upon visible light

Herein, we disclose an eco-efficient redox-neutral iron-catalyzed decarboxylative radical addition to chiral azomethine imines upon visible light (427 nm) giving cyclic hydrazine derivatives with dr ranging from 82 : 18 to >96 : 4. This earth-abundant metal promoted sequence proceeds efficiently under ligand-free conditions based on a LMCT process and opens a route to new chiral heterocycles.

Factors that Impact Photochemical Cage Escape Yields

The utilization of visible light to mediate chemical reactions in fluid solutions has applications that range from solar fuel production to medicine and organic synthesis. These reactions are typically initiated by electron transfer between a photoexcited dye molecule (a photosensitizer) and a redox-active quencher to yield radical pairs that are intimately associated within a solvent cage. Many of these radicals undergo rapid thermodynamically favored "geminate" recombination and do not diffuse out of the solvent cage that surrounds them. Those that do escape the cage are useful reagents that may undergo subsequent reactions important to the above-mentioned applications. The cage escape process and the factors that determine the yields remain poorly understood despite decades of research motivated by their practical and fundamental importance. Herein, state-of-the-art research on light-induced electron transfer and cage escape that has appeared since the seminal 1972 review by J. P. Lorand entitled "The Cage Effect" is reviewed. This review also provides some background for those new to the field and discusses the cage escape process of both homolytic bond photodissociation and bimolecular light induced electron transfer reactions. The review concludes with some key goals and directions for future research that promise to elevate this very vibrant field to even greater heights.

Earth-abundant Zn-dipyrrin chromophores for efficient CO2 photoreduction

The development of strong sensitizing and Earth-abundant antenna molecules is highly desirable for CO2 reduction through artificial photosynthesis. Herein, a library of Zn-dipyrrin complexes (Z-1-Z-6) are rationally designed via precisely controlling their molecular configuration to optimize strong sensitizing Earth-abundant photosensitizers. Upon visible-light excitation, their special geometry enables intramolecular charge transfer to induce a charge-transfer state, which was first demonstrated to accept electrons from electron donors. The resulting long-lived reduced photosensitizer was confirmed to trigger consecutive intermolecular electron transfers for boosting CO2-to-CO conversion. Remarkably, the Earth-abundant catalytic system with Z-6 and Fe-catalyst exhibits outstanding performance with a turnover number of >20 000 and 29.7% quantum yield, representing excellent catalytic performance among the molecular catalytic systems and highly superior to that of noble-metal photosensitizer Ir(ppy)2(bpy)+ under similar conditions. Experimental and theoretical investigations comprehensively unveil the structure-activity relationship, opening up a new horizon for the development of Earth-abundant strong sensitizing chromophores for boosting artificial photosynthesis.

Photocatalytic α-arylation of cyclic ketones by a thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecule

α-Arylation of cyclic ketones via an organophotocatalytic route has been described utilizing PXZ-TRZ, a molecule displaying thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Using this route, a plethora of cyclic ketones including cyclohexanone, cyclopentanone and even cyclooctanone can be effectively arylated with many aryl iodides or bromides under mild conditions.

Frozen Natural Orbitals for the State-Averaged Driven Similarity Renormalization Group

We present a reduced-cost implementation of the state-averaged driven similarity renormalization group (SA-DSRG) based on the frozen natural orbital (FNO) approach. The natural orbitals (NOs) are obtained by diagonalizing the one-body reduced density matrix from SA-DSRG second-order perturbation theory (SA-DSRG-PT2). We consider three criteria to truncate the virtual NOs for the subsequent electron correlation treatment beyond SA-DSRG-PT2. An additive second-order correction is applied to the SA-DSRG Hamiltonian to reintroduce correlation effects from the discarded orbitals. The FNO SA-DSRG method is benchmarked on 35 small organic molecules in the QUEST database. When keeping 98-99% of the cumulative occupation numbers, the mean absolute error in the vertical transition energies due to FNO is less than 0.01 eV. Using the same FNO threshold, we observe a speedup of 9 times compared to the conventional SA-DSRG implementation for nickel carbonyl with a quadruple-ζ basis set. The FNO approach enables nonperturbative SA-DSRG computations on chloroiron corrole [FeCl(C19H11N4)] with more than 1000 basis functions, surpassing the current limit of a conventional implementation.

Photophysical Studies of a Zr(IV) Complex with Two Pyrrolide-Based Tetradentate Schiff Base Ligands

The reaction of two equivalents of N,N'-bis(2-pyrrolylmethylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine (H2bppda) with tetrabenzylzirconium provided the air- and moisture-stable eight-coordinate complex Zr(bppda)2. Temperature-dependent steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy established weak photoluminescence (ΦPL = 0.4% at 293 K) by a combination of prompt fluorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) upon visible light excitation at and around room temperature. TADF emission is strongly quenched by 3O2 and shows highly temperature-sensitive emission lifetimes of hundreds of microseconds. The lifetime of the lowest energy singlet excited state, S1, was established by transient absorption spectroscopy and shows rapid deactivation (τ = 142 ps) by prompt fluorescence and intersystem crossing to the triplet state, T1. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations predict moderate ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) contributions of 25-30% for the S1 and T1 states. A comparison of Zr(bppda)2 to related zirconium pyridine dipyrrolide complexes, Zr(PDP)2, revealed important electronic structure changes due to the eight-coordinate ligand environment in Zr(bppda)2, which were correlated to differences in the photophysical properties between the two compound classes.

Efficient wide-spectrum one-dimensional MWO4 (M = Mn, Co, and Cd) photocatalysts: Synthesis, characterization and density functional theory study

Broadening the absorption region to near-infrared (NIR) light is critical for the photocatalysis due to the larger proportion and stronger penetration of NIR light in solar energy. In the present paper, one-dimensional (1D) MWO4 (M = Mn, Co, and Cd) materials synthesized by electrospinning technique, were studied by combining the density functional theory (DFT) with experiment results, which possessed the enhanced light absorption capability within the range of 200-2000 nm. It was proved that in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) region, the absorption bands of CoWO4 and MnWO4 samples were attributed to the metal-to-metal charge transfer mechanism, while the absorption of CdWO4 sample may be referable to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer mechanism. In the near-infrared (NIR) region, the absorption of CoWO4 and MnWO4 primarily originated from the d-d orbital transitions of Mn2+ and Co2+. The photocatalytic experimental results showed that the degradation rates for bisphenol A (BPA) over CoWO4, MnWO4, and CdWO4 photocatalysts under UV-Vis/NIR light irradiation for 140 min/12 h were 78.8 %/75.9 %, 23.8 %/21.3 %, 12.8 %/8.7 %, respectively. This research offers the novel insights into the precise construction of tungstate catalytic systems and contributes to the advancement of UV-Vis-NIR full spectrum photocatalytic technology, and lays a foundation for a cleaner and more environmental-friendly future.

Mechanoresponsive luminescence triggered by phase transition of a supercooled copper(I) complex

Under mechanical stimulation, a copper(I) complex in its supercooled liquid state transforms into a crystalline phase, showing a dramatic emission color change from red to green that is accompanied by a 20-fold increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield up to 87%. This reversible phase transition relies on the intriguing ability of this copper complex to form a supercooled metastable state.

A new era of LMCT: leveraging ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states for photochemical reactions

Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited states are capable of undergoing a wide array of photochemical reactions, yet receive minimal attention compared to other charge transfer excited states. This work provides general criteria for designing transition metal complexes that exhibit low energy LMCT excited states and routes to drive photochemistry from these excited states. General design principles regarding metal identity, oxidation state, geometry, and ligand sets are summarized. Fundamental photoreactions from these states including visible light-induced homolysis, excited state electron transfer, and other photoinduced chemical transformations are discussed and key design principles for enabling these photochemical reactions are further highlighted. Guided by these fundamentals, this review outlines critical considerations for the future design and application of coordination complexes with LMCT excited states.

Oxidative two-state photoreactivity of a manganese(IV) complex using near-infrared light

Highly reducing or oxidizing photocatalysts are a fundamental challenge in photochemistry. Only a few transition metal complexes with Earth-abundant metal ions have so far advanced to excited state oxidants. All these photocatalysts require high-energy light for excitation, and their oxidizing power has not been fully exploited due to energy dissipation before reaching the photoactive state. Here we demonstrate that the complex [Mn(dgpy)2]4+, based on Earth-abundant manganese and the tridentate 2,6-diguanidylpyridine ligand (dgpy), evolves to a luminescent doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2LMCT) excited state (1,435 nm, 0.86 eV) with a lifetime of 1.6 ns after excitation with low-energy near-infrared light. This 2LMCT state oxidizes naphthalene to its radical cation. Substrates with extremely high oxidation potentials up to 2.4 V enable the [Mn(dgpy)2]4+ photoreduction via a high-energy quartet 4LMCT excited state with a lifetime of 0.78 ps, proceeding via static quenching by the solvent. This process minimizes free energy losses and harnesses the full photooxidizing power, and thus allows oxidation of nitriles and benzene using Earth-abundant elements and low-energy light.

Cobalt-Mediated Photochemical C-H Arylation of Pyrroles

Precious metal complexes remain ubiquitous in photoredox catalysis (PRC) despite concerted efforts to find more earth-abundant catalysts and replacements based on 3d metals in particular. Most otherwise plausible 3d metal complexes are assumed to be unsuitable due to short-lived excited states, which has led researchers to prioritize the pursuit of longer excited-state lifetimes through careful molecular design. However, we report herein that the C-H arylation of pyrroles and related substrates (which are benchmark reactions for assessing the efficacy of photoredox catalysts) can be achieved using a simple and readily accessible octahedral bis(diiminopyridine) cobalt complex, [1-Co](PF6)2. Notably, [1-Co]2+ efficiently functionalizes both chloro- and bromoarene substrates despite the short excited-state lifetime of the key photoexcited intermediate *[1-Co]2+ (8 ps). We present herein the scope of this C-H arylation protocol and provide mechanistic insights derived from detailed spectroscopic and computational studies. These indicate that, despite its transient existence, reduction of *[1-Co]2+ is facilitated via pre-assembly with the NEt3 reductant, highlighting an alternative strategy for the future development of 3d metal-catalyzed PRC.

Activating the Fluorescence of a Ni(II) Complex by Energy Transfer

Luminescence of open-shell 3d metal complexes is often quenched due to ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) and cooling into a dark metal-centered excited state. We demonstrate successful activation of fluorescence from individual nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) molecules in the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by resonant energy transfer from other metal phthalocyanines at low temperature. By combining STM, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, STM-induced luminescence, and photoluminescence experiments as well as time-dependent density functional theory, we provide evidence that there is an activation barrier for the ISC, which, in most experimental conditions, is overcome. We show that this is also the case in an electroluminescent tunnel junction where individual NiPc molecules adsorbed on an ultrathin NaCl decoupling film on a Ag(111) substrate are probed. However, when an MPc (M = Zn, Pd, Pt) molecule is placed close to NiPc by means of STM atomic manipulation, resonant energy transfer can excite NiPc without overcoming the ISC activation barrier, leading to Q-band fluorescence. This work demonstrates that the thermally activated population of dark metal-centered states can be avoided by a designed local environment at low temperatures paired with directed molecular excitation into vibrationally cold electronic states. Thus, we can envisage the use of luminophores based on more abundant transition metal complexes that do not rely on Pt or Ir by restricting vibration-induced ISC.

Unraveling the Prominent Existence of Trace Metals in Photocatalysis: Exploring Iron Impurity Effects

Metal impurities can complicate the identification of active catalyst species in transition metal catalysis and electrocatalysis, potentially leading to misleading findings. This study investigates the influence of metal impurities on photocatalysis. Specifically, the photocatalytic reaction of inert alkanes using chlorides without the use of an external photocatalyst was studied, achieving successful C(sp3)-H functionalization. The observations reveal that Fe and Cu impurities are challenging to avoid in a typical laboratory environment and are prominently present in normal reaction systems, and iron impurities play a dominant role in the aforementioned apparent 'metal-free' reaction. Additionally, iron exhibits significantly higher catalytic activity compared to Cu, Ce, and Ni at low metal concentrations in the photocatalytic C(sp3)-H functionalization using chlorides. Considering the widespread presence of Fe and Cu impurities in typical laboratory environments, this study serves as a reminder of their involvement in reaction processes.

How Rigidity and Conjugation of Bidentate Ligands Affect the Geometry and Photophysics of Iron N-Heterocyclic Complexes: A Comparative Study

Two iron complexes featuring the bidentate, nonconjugated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) 1,1'-methylenebis(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene) (mbmi) ligand, where the two NHC moieties are separated by a methylene bridge, have been synthesized to exploit the combined influence of geometric and electronic effects on the ground- and excited-state properties of homoleptic FeIII-hexa-NHC [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 and heteroleptic FeII-tetra-NHC [Fe(mbmi)2(bpy)](PF6)2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) complexes. They are compared to the reported FeIII-hexa-NHC [Fe(btz)3](PF6)3 and FeII-tetra-NHC [Fe(btz)2(bpy)](PF6)2 complexes containing the conjugated, bidentate mesoionic NHC ligand 3,3'-dimethyl-1,1'-bis(p-tolyl)-4,4'-bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene) (btz). The observed geometries of [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 and [Fe(mbmi)2(bpy)](PF6)2 are evaluated through L-Fe-L bond angles and ligand planarity and compared to those of [Fe(btz)3](PF6)3 and [Fe(btz)2(bpy)](PF6)2. The FeII/FeIII redox couples of [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 (-0.38 V) and [Fe(mbmi)2(bpy)](PF6)2 (-0.057 V, both vs Fc+/0) are less reducing than [Fe(btz)3](PF6)3 and [Fe(btz)2(bpy)](PF6)2. The two complexes show intense absorption bands in the visible region: [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 at 502 nm (ligand-to-metal charge transfer, 2LMCT) and [Fe(mbmi)2(bpy)](PF6)2 at 410 and 616 nm (metal-to-ligand charge transfer, 3MLCT). Lifetimes of 57.3 ps (2LMCT) for [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 and 7.6 ps (3MLCT) for [Fe(mbmi)2(bpy)](PF6)2 were probed and are somewhat shorter than those for [Fe(btz)3](PF6)3 and [Fe(btz)2(bpy)](PF6)2. [Fe(mbmi)3](PF6)3 exhibits photoluminescence at 686 nm (2LMCT) in acetonitrile at room temperature with a quantum yield of (1.2 ± 0.1) × 10-4, compared to (3 ± 0.5) × 10-4 for [Fe(btz)3](PF6)3.

Luminescent and Photoredox-Active Molybdenum(0) Complexes Competitive with Isoelectronic Ruthenium(II) Polypyridines

Ruthenium(II) complexes with chelating polypyridine ligands are among the most frequently investigated compounds in photophysics and photochemistry, owing to their favorable luminescence and photoredox properties. Equally good photoluminescence performance and attractive photocatalytic behavior is now achievable with isoelectronic molybdenum(0) complexes. The zero-valent oxidation state of molybdenum is stabilized by carbonyl or isocyanide ligands, and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states analogous to those in ruthenium(II) complexes can be established. Microsecond MLCT excited-state lifetimes and photoluminescence quantum yields up to 0.2 have been achieved in solution at room temperature, and the emission wavelength has become tunable over a large range. The molybdenum(0) complexes are stronger photoreductants than ruthenium(II) polypyridines and can therefore perform more challenging chemical reductions. The triplet nature of their luminescent MLCT states allows sensitization of photon upconversion via triplet-triplet annihilation, to convert low-energy input radiation into higher-energy output fluorescence. This review summarizes the current state of the art concerning luminescent molybdenum(0) complexes and highlights their application potential. Molybdenum is roughly 140 times more abundant and far cheaper than ruthenium, hence this research is relevant in the greater context of finding more sustainable alternatives to using precious and rare transition metals in photophysics and photochemistry.

Photoredox matching of earth-abundant photosensitizers with hydrogen evolving catalysts by first-principles predictions

Photoredox properties of several earth-abundant light-harvesting transition metal complexes in combination with cobalt-based proton reduction catalysts have been investigated computationally to assess the fundamental viability of different photocatalytic systems of current experimental interest. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations using several GGA (BP86, BLYP), hybrid-GGA (B3LYP, B3LYP*), hybrid meta-GGA (M06, TPSSh), and range-separated hybrid (ωB97X, CAM-B3LYP) functionals were used to calculate relevant ground and excited state reduction potentials for photosensitizers, catalysts, and sacrificial electron donors. Linear energy correction factors for the DFT/TD-DFT results that provide the best agreement with available experimental reference results were determined in order to provide more accurate predictions. Among the selection of functionals, the B3LYP* and TPSSh sets of correction parameters were determined to give the best redox potentials and excited states energies, ΔEexc, with errors of ∼0.2 eV. Linear corrections for both reduction and oxidation processes significantly improve the predictions for all the redox pairs. In particular, for TPSSh and B3LYP*, the calculated errors decrease by more than 0.5 V against experimental values for catalyst reduction potentials, photosensitizer oxidation potentials, and electron donor oxidation potentials. Energy-corrected TPSSh results were finally used to predict the energetics of complete photocatalytic cycles for the light-driven activation of selected proton reduction cobalt catalysts. These predictions demonstrate the broader usefulness of the adopted approach to systematically predict full photocycle behavior for first-row transition metal photosensitizer-catalyst combinations more broadly.

Structural Control of Highly Efficient Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence in Carbene Zinc(II) Dithiolates

Luminescent metal complexes based on earth abundant elements are a valuable target to substitute 4d/5d transition metal complexes as triplet emitters in advanced photonic applications. Whereas CuI complexes have been thoroughly investigated in the last two decades for this purpose, no structure-property-relationships for efficient luminescence involving triplet excited states from ZnII complexes are established. Herein, we report on the design of monomeric carbene zinc(II) dithiolates (CZT) featuring a donor-acceptor-motif that leads to highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with for ZnII compounds unprecedented radiative rate constants kTADF =1.2×106  s-1 at 297 K. Our high-level DFT/MRCI calculations revealed that the relative orientation of the ligands involved in the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (1/3 LLCT) states is paramount to control the TADF process. Specifically, a dihedral angle of 36-40° leads to very efficient reverse intersystem-crossing (rISC) on the order of 109  s-1 due to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mediated by the sulfur atoms in combination with a small ΔES1-T1 of ca. 56 meV.

Tailoring the Photophysical Properties of a Homoleptic Iron(II) Tetra N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex by Attaching an Imidazolium Group to the (C∧N∧C) Pincer Ligand─A Comparative Study

We here report the synthesis of the homoleptic iron(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex [Fe(miHpbmi)2](PF6)4 (miHpbmi = 4-((3-methyl-1H-imidazolium-1-yl)pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene)) and its electrochemical and photophysical properties. The introduction of the π-electron-withdrawing 3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl group into the NHC ligand framework resulted in stabilization of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) state and destabilization of the metal-centered (MC) states. This resulted in an improved excited-state lifetime of 16 ps compared to the 9 ps for the unsubstituted parent compound [Fe(pbmi)2](PF6)2 (pbmi = (pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene)) as well as a stronger MLCT absorption band extending more toward the red spectral region. However, compared to the carboxylic acid derivative [Fe(cpbmi)2](PF6)2 (cpbmi = 1,1'-(4-carboxypyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene)), the excited-state lifetime of [Fe(miHpbmi)2](PF6)4 is the same, but both the extinction and the red shift are more pronounced for the former. Hence, this makes [Fe(miHpbmi)2](PF6)4 a promising pH-insensitive analogue of [Fe(cpbmi)2](PF6)2. Finally, the excited-state dynamics of the title compound [Fe(miHpbmi)2](PF6)4 was investigated in solvents with different viscosities, however, showing very little dependency of the depopulation of the excited states on the properties of the solvent used.

Robust links in photoactive covalent organic frameworks enable effective photocatalytic reactions under harsh conditions

Developing heterogeneous photocatalysts for the applications in harsh conditions is of high importance but challenging. Herein, by converting the imine linkages into quinoline groups of triphenylamine incorporated covalent organic frameworks (COFs), two photosensitive COFs, namely TFPA-TAPT-COF-Q and TFPA-TPB-COF-Q, are successfully constructed. The obtained quinoline-linked COFs display improved stability and photocatalytic activity, making them suitable photocatalysts for photocatalytic reactions under harsh conditions, as verified by the recyclable photocatalytic reactions of organic acid involving oxidative decarboxylation and organic base involving benzylamine coupling. Under strong oxidative condition, the quinoline-linked COFs show a high efficiency up to 11831.6 μmol·g-1·h-1 and a long-term recyclable usability for photocatalytic production of H2O2, while the pristine imine-linked COFs are less catalytically active and easily decomposed in these harsh conditions. The results demonstrate that enhancing the linkage robustness of photoactive COFs is a promising strategy to construct heterogeneous catalysts for photocatalytic reactions under harsh conditions.

Fusion Position-Dependent Aromatic Transitions of Ligand Backbone Rings for Controlling the Redox Energetics of Photoredox Catalysts

To reveal, quantify, and rationalize the effect of backbone π-extension on ligand redox activity, we studied the ground- and excited-state reduction potentials of eight ruthenium photoredox catalysts with the formula Ru(ppy)2L (L is the redox-active ligand of the bipyridine family) using density functional theory. Our research underlines the profound importance of the fusion position of backbone aromatic C6 rings on the redox activity of ligands in transition metal photoredox catalysts. Namely, certain fusion positions lead to the dearomatization of C6 rings in ligand-centered electron transfer events, resulting in a thermodynamic penalty equivalent to a half-volt negative shift in the reduction potential. Contrarily, the extent of backbone delocalization shows a minimal impact on redox energetics, which can be explained by the charge concentration at the nitrogen contact atoms in ligand-centered reductions. Grounded in Caulton's conceptual framework, we reaffirm the predictive potency of Lewis structures in ligand-centered redox energetics with qualitative and quantitative data. Our hypothesis regarding the effect of backbone ring dearomatization on redox energetics is further corroborated using magnetic and structure-based aromaticity indicators. Highlighting fusion-dependent dearomatization as a determining factor of ligand-centered electron transfer energetics, our findings hold implications for molecular-level design in advanced electroactive materials and catalysts.

Enhanced Visible Light Absorption in Heteroleptic Cuprous Phenanthrolines

This work presents a series of Cu(I) heteroleptic 1,10-phenanthroline chromophores featuring enhanced UVA and visible-light-harvesting properties manifested through vectorial control of the copper-to-phenanthroline charge-transfer transitions. The molecules were prepared using the HETPHEN strategy, wherein a sterically congested 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthrolne (mesPhen) ligand was paired with a second phenanthroline ligand incorporating extended π-systems in their 4,7-positions. The combination of electrochemistry, static and time-resolved electronic spectroscopy, 77 K photoluminescence spectra, and time-dependent density functional theory calculations corroborated all of the experimental findings. The model chromophore, [Cu(mesPhen)(phen)]+ (1), lacking 4,7-substitutions preferentially reduces the mesPhen ligand in the lowest energy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited state. The remaining cuprous phenanthrolines (2-4) preferentially reduce their π-conjugated ligands in the low-lying MLCT excited state. The absorption cross sections of 2-4 were enhanced (εMLCTmax = 7430-9980 M-1 cm-1) and significantly broadened across the UVA and visible regions of the spectrum compared to 1 (εMLCTmax = 6494 M-1 cm-1). The excited-state decay mechanism mirrored those of long-lived homoleptic Cu(I) phenanthrolines, yielding three distinguishable time constants in ultrafast transient absorption experiments. These represent pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion (τ1), singlet-triplet intersystem crossing (τ2), and the relaxed MLCT excited-state lifetime (τ3). Effective light-harvesting from Cu(I)-based chromophores can now be rationalized within the HETPHEN strategy while achieving directionality in their respective MLCT transitions, valuable for integration into more complex donor-acceptor architectures and longer-lived photosensitizers.

Luminescence and Excited-State Reactivity in a Heteroleptic Tricyanido Fe(III) Complex

Harnessing sunlight via photosensitizing molecules is key for novel optical applications and solar-to-chemical energy conversion. Exploiting abundant metals such as iron is attractive but becomes challenging due to typically fast nonradiative relaxation processes. In this work, we report on the luminescence and excited-state reactivity of the heteroleptic [FeIII(pzTp)(CN)3]- complex (pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate), which incorporates a σ-donating trispyrazolyl chelate ligand and three monodentate σ-donating and π-accepting cyanide ligands. Contrary to the nonemissive [Fe(CN)6]3-, a broad emission band centered at 600 nm at room temperature has been recorded for the heteroleptic analogue attributed to the radiative deactivation from a 2LMCT excited state with a luminescence quantum yield of 0.02% and a lifetime of 80 ps in chloroform at room temperature. Bimolecular reactivity of the 2LMCT excited state was successfully applied to different alcohol photo-oxidation, identifying a cyanide-H bonding as a key reaction intermediate. Finally, this research demonstrated the exciting potential of [Fe(pzTp)(CN)3]- as a photo-oxidant, paving the way for further exploration and development of emissive Fe-based photosensitizers competent for photochemical transformations.

Photoinduced Dynamic Ligation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline materials consisting of metal-based nodes and organic linkers, have emerged as a promising platform for photocatalysis due to their ultrahigh functional surface area, customizable topologies, and tunable energetics. While interesting photochemistry has been reported, the related photoinduced structural dynamics of MOFs remains unclear. The consensus is that the coordination bonds between MOF nodes and linkers are considered static during photoexcitation, while the open-metal sites on the nodes are taken as the key active sites for catalysis. In this work, through a complementary time-resolved visible and infrared (IR) spectroscopic investigation, along with computational studies, we report for the first time light-induced structural bond dissociation (COO-M) and reformation in an iron-oxo framework, MIL-101(Fe). The probed excited state displayed ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) characteristics and exhibited a ca. 30 μs lifetime. The incredibly long excited-state lifetime led us to probe potential structural rearrangements that facilitated charge separation in MIL-101(Fe). By probing the vibrational fingerprints of the carboxylate linker upon LMCT photoexcitation, we observed the reversible transition of the carboxylate-Fe bond from a bidentate bridging mode to a monodentate mode, indicating the partial dissociation of the carboxylate ligand. Importantly, the bidentate configuration is recovered on the same time scale of the excited state lifetimes as probed via visible transient absorption spectroscopy. The elucidated photoinduced configurational dynamics provides a foundation for an in-depth understanding of MOF-based photocatalytic mechanisms.

Air- and Water-Stable Heteroleptic Copper (I) Complexes Bearing Bis(indazol-1-yl)methane Ligands: Synthesis, Characterisation, and Computational Studies

A series of four novel heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes, bearing bis(1H-indazol-1-yl)methane analogues as N,N ligands and DPEPhos as the P,P ligand, were synthesised in high yields under mild conditions and characterised by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. In addition, the position of the carboxymethyl substituent in the complexes and its effect on the electrochemical and photophysical behaviour was evaluated. As expected, the homoleptic copper (I) complexes with the N,N ligands showed air instability. In contrast, the obtained heteroleptic complexes were air- and water-stable in solid and solution. All complexes displayed green-yellow luminescence in CH2Cl2 at room temperature due to ligand-centred (LC) phosphorescence in the case of the Cu(I) complex with an unsubstituted N,N ligand and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) phosphorescence for the carboxymethyl-substituted complexes. Interestingly, proper substitution of the bis(1H-indazol-1-yl)methane ligand enabled the achievement of a remarkable luminescent yield (2.5%) in solution, showcasing the great potential of this novel class of copper(I) complexes for potential applications in luminescent devices and/or photocatalysis.

Improved transition metal photosensitizers to drive advances in photocatalysis

To function effectively in a photocatalytic application, a photosensitizer's light absorption, excited-state lifetime, and redox potentials, both in the ground state and excited state, are critically important. The absorption profile is particularly relevant to applications involving solar harvesting, whereas the redox potentials and excited-state lifetimes determine the thermodynamics, kinetics, and quantum yields of photoinduced redox processes. This perspective article focuses on synthetic inorganic and organometallic approaches to optimize these three characteristics of transition-metal based photosensitizers. We include our own work in these areas, which has focused extensively on exceptionally strong cyclometalated iridium photoreductants that enable challenging reductive photoredox transformations on organic substrates, and more recent work which has led to improved solar harvesting in charge-transfer copper(i) chromophores, an emerging class of earth-abundant compounds particularly relevant to solar-energy applications. We also extensively highlight many other complementary strategies for optimizing these parameters and highlight representative examples from the recent literature. It remains a significant challenge to simultaneously optimize all three of these parameters at once, since improvements in one often come at the detriment of the others. These inherent trade-offs and approaches to obviate or circumvent them are discussed throughout.

Multifaceted Deactivation Dynamics of Fe(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizers

Excited state dynamics of three iron(II) carbene complexes that serve as prototype Earth-abundant photosensitizers were investigated by ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Significant differences in the dynamics between the investigated complexes down to femtosecond time scales are used to characterize fundamental differences in the depopulation of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) excited states in the presence of energetically accessible triplet metal-centered (3MC) states. Novel insights into the full deactivation cascades of the investigated complexes include evidence of the need to revise the deactivation model for a prominent iron carbene prototype complex, a refined understanding of complex 3MC dynamics, and a quantitative discrimination between activated and barrierless deactivation steps along the 3MLCT → 3MC → 1GS path. Overall, the study provides an improved understanding of photophysical limitations and opportunities for the use of iron(II)-based photosensitizers in photochemical applications.

Polycationic Ru(II) Luminophores: Syntheses, Photophysics, and Application in Electrostatically Driven Sensitization of Lanthanide Luminescence

A series of photoluminescent Ru(II) polypyridine complexes have been synthesized in a manner that varies the extent of the cationic charge. Two ligand systems (L1 and L2), based upon 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) mono- or difunctionalized at the 5- or 5,5'-positions using N-methylimidazolium groups, were utilized. The resulting Ru(II) species therefore carried +3, +4, +6, and +8 complex moieties based on a [Ru(bipy)3]2+ core. Tetra-cationic [Ru(bipy)2(L2)][PF6]4 was characterized using XRD, revealing H-bonding interactions between two of the counteranions and the cationic unit. The ground-state features of the complexes were found to closely resemble those of the parent unfunctionalized [Ru(bipy)3]2+ complex. In contrast, the excited state properties produce a variation in emission maxima, including a bathochromic 44 nm shift of the 3MLCT band for the tetra-cationic complex; interestingly, further increases in overall charge to +6 and +8 produced a hypsochromic shift in the 3MLCT band. Supporting DFT calculations suggest that the trend in emission behavior may, in part, be due to the precise nature of the LUMO and its localization. The utility of a photoactive polycationic Ru(II) complex was then demonstrated through the sensitization of a polyanionic Yb(III) complex in free solution. The study shows that electrostatically driven ion pairing is sufficient to facilitate energy transfer between the 3MLCT donor state of the Ru(II) complex and the accepting 2F5/2 excited state of Yb(III).

Observation of parallel intersystem crossing and charge transfer-state dynamics in [Fe(bpy)3]2+ from ultrafast 2D electronic spectroscopy

Transition metal-based charge-transfer complexes represent a broad class of inorganic compounds with diverse photochemical applications. Charge-transfer complexes based on earth-abundant elements have been of increasing interest, particularly the canonical [Fe(bpy)3]2+. Photoexcitation into the singlet metal-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) state is followed by relaxation first to the ligand-field manifold and then to the ground state. While these dynamics have been well-studied, processes within the MLCT manifold that facilitate and/or compete with relaxation have been more elusive. We applied ultrafast two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) to disentangle the dynamics immediately following MLCT excitation of this compound. First, dynamics ascribed to relaxation out of the initially formed 1MLCT state was found to correlate with the inertial response time of the solvent. Second, the additional dimension of the 2D spectra revealed a peak consistent with a ∼20 fs 1MLCT → 3MLCT intersystem crossing process. These two observations indicate that the complex simultaneously undergoes intersystem crossing and direct conversion to ligand-field state(s). Resolution of these parallel pathways in this prototypical earth-abundant complex highlights the ability of 2DES to deconvolve the otherwise obscured excited-state dynamics of charge-transfer complexes.

Selectivity control towards CO versus H2 for photo-driven CO2 reduction with a novel Co(II) catalyst

Developing efficient catalysts for reducing carbon dioxide, a highly stable combustion waste product, is a relevant task to lower the atmospheric concentration of this greenhouse gas by upcycling. Selectivity towards CO2-reduction products is highly desirable, although it can be challenging to achieve since the metal-hydrides formation is sometimes favored and leads to H2 evolution. In this work, we designed a cobalt-based catalyst, and we present herein its physicochemical properties. Moreover, we tailored a fully earth-abundant photocatalytic system to achieve specifically CO2 reduction, optimizing efficiency and selectivity. By changing the conditions, we enhanced the turnover number (TON) of CO production from only 0.5 to more than 60 and the selectivity from 6% to 97% after four hours of irradiation at 420 nm. Further efficiency enhancement was achieved by adding 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol, producing CO with a TON up to 230, although at the expense of selectivity (54%).

Photo-Catalyzed α-Arylation of Enol Acetate Using Recyclable Silica-Supported Heteroleptic and Homoleptic Copper(I) Photosensitizers

Earth-abundant photosensitizers are highly sought after for light-mediated applications, such as photoredox catalysis, depollution and energy conversion schemes. Homoleptic and heteroleptic copper(I) complexes are promising candidates in this field, as copper is abundant and the corresponding complexes are easily obtained in smooth conditions. However, some heteroleptic copper(I) complexes suffer from low (photo)stability that leads to the gradual formation of the corresponding homoleptic complex. Such degradation pathways are detrimental, especially when recyclability is desired. This study reports a novel approach for the heterogenization of homoleptic and heteroleptic Cu complexes on silica nanoparticles. In both cases, the photophysical properties upon surface immobilization were only slightly affected. Excited-state quenching with aryl diazonium derivatives occurred efficiently (108 -1010  M-1  s-1 ) with heterogeneous and homogeneous photosensitizers. Moderate but almost identical yields were obtained for the α-arylation of enol acetate using the homoleptic complex in homogeneous or heterogeneous conditions. Importantly, the silica-supported photocatalysts were recycled with moderate loss in photoactivity over multiple experiments. Transient absorption spectroscopy confirmed that excited-state electron transfer occurred from the homogeneous and heterogeneous homoleptic copper(I) complexes to aryl diazonium derivatives, generating the corresponding copper(II) center that persisted for several hundreds of microseconds, compatible with photoredox catalysis applications.

Estimation of stability constants of Fe(III) with antibiotics and dissolved organic matter using a novel UV-vis spectroscopy method

Determining conditional stability constant (Kcond) is paramount in assessing complex stability, particularly in Fe(III) complexes that are prevalent in actual surface water and wastewater matrices. In this study, existing methods of Kcond determination were evaluated and a novel UV-Vis spectroscopy method was proposed based on the evaluation of these approaches. Model ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and oxalic acid (OA)), as well as common antibiotics (kanamycin (Kana) and tetracycline (TTC)), were employed to determine the Kcond of the Fe(III)-ligand complexes under neutral conditions (pH 6.5). The obtained fitting results revealed that the logKcond were in the order of Fe(III)-EDTA (7.08) > Fe(III)-NTA (4.67) > Fe(III)-OA (4.32) > Fe(III)-TTC (4.28) > Fe(III)-Kana (3.07). In addition to these single ligands, the methodology was extended to the Fe(III) complexation with humic acid (HA), a complex mixture of organic components, where the fitting result indicated a logKcond of 5.02 M-1. The method's application domain was analyzed by numerical analysis and combined with experimental results. The findings demonstrate that the proposed methodology possesses satisfactory measurement capability for Kcond ranging from 103 to 107 M-1, suggesting its broad applicability to the majority of complexes. This method can provide valuable insights into the impact of Fe(III) complexes within the water matrix.

Cubane Dimerization: Cu4 vs Cu8 Copper Iodide Clusters

Copper(I) halides are well-known for their structural diversity and rich photoluminescence properties, showing great potential for the development of solid-state lighting technology. A series of four molecular copper iodide clusters based on the [Cu4I4] cubane geometry is reported. Among them, [Cu8I8] octanuclear clusters of rare geometry resulting from dimerization of the tetranuclear counterparts were also synthesized. Two different phosphine ligands were studied, bearing either a styrene or an ethyl group. Therefore, the effect of the dimerization and of the ligand nature on the photophysical properties of the resulting clusters is investigated. The structural differences were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared, and Raman analyses. Compared to the ethyl group, the styrene function appears to greatly impact the photophysical properties of the clusters. The luminescence thermochromic properties of the ethyl derivatives and the intriguing photophysical properties of the clusters with styrene function were rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Thus, the styrene group significantly lowers in energy the vacant orbitals and consequently affects the global energetic layout of the clusters. From this study, it was found that the nuclearity of copper iodide clusters eventually has less influence on the photophysical properties than the nature of the ligand. The design of proper ligands should therefore be considered when developing materials for specific lighting applications.

Design Strategies for Luminescent Titanocenes: Improving the Photoluminescence and Photostability of Arylethynyltitanocenes

Complexes that undergo ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) to d0 metals are of interest as possible photocatalysts. Cp2Ti(C2Ph)2 (where C2Ph = phenylethynyl) was reported to be weakly emissive in room-temperature (RT) fluid solution from its phenylethynyl-to-Ti 3LMCT state but readily photodecomposes. Coordination of CuX between the alkyne ligands to give Cp2Ti(C2Ph)2CuX (X = Cl, Br) has been shown to significantly increase the photostability, but such complexes are not emissive in RT solution. Herein, we investigate whether inhibition of alkyne-Ti-alkyne bond compression might be responsible for the increased photostability of the CuX complexes by investigating the decomposition of a structurally constrained analogue, Cp2Ti(OBET) (OBET = o-bis(ethynyl)tolane). To investigate the mechanism of nonradiative decay from the 3LMCT states in Cp2Ti(C2Ph)2CuX, the photophysical properties were investigated both upon deuteration and upon rigidifying in a poly(methyl methacrylate) film. These investigations suggested that inhibition of structural rearrangement may play a dominant role in increasing emission lifetimes and quantum yields. The bulkier Cp*2Ti(C2Ph)2CuBr was prepared and is emissive at 693 nm in RT THF solution with a photoluminescent quantum yield of 1.3 × 10-3 (τ = 0.18 μs). Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations suggest that emission occurs from a 3LMCT state dominated by Cp*-to-Ti charge transfer.

Visible-light induced C(sp3)-H arylation of glycine derivatives by cerium catalysis

A Ce(III)-catalyzed, visible-light induced aerobic oxidative dehydrogenative coupling reaction between glycine derivatives and electron-rich arenes is disclosed. The protocol proceeds efficiently under mild conditions, providing an efficient method for the rapid synthesis of α-arylglycine derivatives without the need for an external photosensitizer and additional oxidant. Moreover, this protocol could be performed on a 5 mmol scale, without obvious reduction of the efficiency.

Nickel(II) Phototheranostics: A Case Study in Photoactivated H2O2-Enhanced Immunotherapy

Phototheranostics have emerged as a promising subset of cancer theranostics owing to their potential to provide precise photoinduced diagnoses and therapeutic outcomes. However, the design of phototheranostics remains challenging due to the nature of tumors and their microenvironment, including limitations to the oxygen supply, high rates of recurrence and metastasis, and the immunosuppressive state of cancer cells. Here we report a dual-functional oxygen-independent phototheranostic agent, Ni-2, rationally designed to provide a near-infrared (NIR) photoactivated thermal- and hydroxyl radical (•OH)-enhanced photoimmunotherapeutic anticancer response. Under 880 nm laser irradiation, Ni-2 exhibited high photostability and excellent photoacoustic and photothermal effects with a photothermal conversion efficacy of 58.0%, as well as novel photoredox features that allowed the catalytic conversion of H2O2 to •OH upon photooxidation of Ni(II) to Ni(III). As a multifunctional photoagent, Ni-2 was found not only to inhibit tumor growth in a CT26 tumor-bearing mouse model but also to activate an immune response via a combination of photothermal- and H2O2-induced effects. When combined with an antiprogrammed death-ligand 1 (aPD-L1), Ni-2 treatment allowed for the suppression of distant tumor growth and cancer metastasis. Collectively, the present results provide support for the proposition that Ni-2 or its analogues could emerge as useful tools for photoimmunotherapy. They also highlight the potential of appropriately designed 3d transition metal complexes as "all- in-one" phototheranostics.

Catalytic C-H Trifluoromethylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes via Visible Light Photoexcitation of a Co(III)-CF3 Complex

A cobalt photocatalyst for direct trifluoromethylation of (hetero)arene C(sp2)-H bonds is described and shown to operate via visible light activation of a Co-CF3 intermediate, which functions as a combined chromophore and organometallic reaction center. Chemical oxidations of previously reported (OCO)Co complexes containing a redox-active [OCO] pincer ligand afford a Co-CF3 complex two oxidation states above Co(II). Computational and spectroscopic studies are consistent with formulation of the product as [(OCO•)CoIII(CF3)(THF)(OTf)] (II) containing an open-shell [OCO•]1- radical ligand bound to a S = 0 Co(III) center. II is thermodynamically stable, but exposure to blue (440 nm) light induces Co-CF3 bond homolysis and release of •CF3, which is trapped by radical acceptors including TEMPO•, (hetero)arenes, or the radical [OCO•] ligand in II. The latter comprises a competitive degradation pathway, which is overcome under catalytic conditions by using excess substrate. Accordingly, generation of II from the reaction of [(OCO)CoIIL] (III) (L = THF, MeCN) with Umemoto's dibenzothiophenium trifluoromethylating reagent (1) followed by photolytic Co-CF3 bond activation completes a photoredox catalytic cycle for C-H (hetero)arene trifluoromethylation utilizing visible light. Electronic structure and photophysical studies, including time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, suggest that Co-CF3 bond homolysis at II occurs via an ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) (OCO0)CoII(CF3) state, revealing ligand redox activity as a critical design feature and establishing design principles for the use of base metal chromophores for selectivity in photoredox bond activations occurring via free radical intermediates.

Isoacridone dyes with parallel reactivity from both singlet and triplet excited states for biphotonic catalysis and upconversion

Metal-based photosensitizers commonly undergo quantitative intersystem crossing into photoactive triplet excited states. In contrast, organic photosensitizers often feature weak spin-orbit coupling and low intersystem crossing efficiencies, leading to photoactive singlet excited states. By modifying the well-known acridinium dyes, we obtained a new family of organic photocatalysts, the isoacridones, in which both singlet- and triplet-excited states are simultaneously photoactive. These new isoacridone dyes are synthetically readily accessible and show intersystem crossing efficiencies of up to 52%, forming microsecond-lived triplet excited states (T1), storing approximately 1.9 eV of energy. Their photoactive singlet excited states (S1) populated in parallel have only nanosecond lifetimes, but store ∼0.4 eV more energy and act as strong oxidants. Consequently, the new isoacridone dyes are well suited for applications requiring parallel triplet-triplet energy transfer and photoinduced electron transfer elementary steps, which have become increasingly important in modern photocatalysis. In proof-of-principle experiments, the isoacridone dyes were employed for Birch-type arene reductions and C-C couplings via sensitization-initiated electron transfer, substituting the commonly used iridium or ruthenium based photocatalysts. Further, in combination with a pyrene-based annihilator, sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion was achieved in an all-organic system, where the upconversion quantum yield correlated with the intersystem crossing quantum yield of the photosensitizer. This work seems relevant in the greater contexts of developing new applications that utilize biphotonic photophysical and photochemical behavior within metal-free systems.

Exploiting the Marcus inverted region for first-row transition metal-based photoredox catalysis

Second- and third-row transition metal complexes are widely employed in photocatalysis, whereas earth-abundant first-row transition metals have found only limited use because of the prohibitively fast decay of their excited states. We report an unforeseen reactivity mode for productive photocatalysis that uses cobalt polypyridyl complexes as photocatalysts by exploiting Marcus inverted region behavior that couples increases in excited-state energies with increased excited-state lifetimes. These cobalt (III) complexes can engage in bimolecular reactivity by virtue of their strong redox potentials and sufficiently long excited-state lifetimes, catalyzing oxidative C(sp2)-N coupling of aryl amides with challenging sterically hindered aryl boronic acids. More generally, the results imply that chromophores can be designed to increase excited-state lifetimes while simultaneously increasing excited-state energies, providing a pathway for the use of relatively abundant metals as photoredox catalysts.

Polymeric copper(I)-NHC complexes with bulky bidentate (N^C) ligands: synthesis and solid-state luminescence

Starting from imidazolium chlorides bearing bulky nitrogen donors, a series of four complexes, mainly [Cu(C^N)Cl]n coordination polymers were obtained directly as luminescent species by simple filtration from the aqueous reaction medium, highlighting a simple, eco-friendly, robust and reproducible synthetic procedure. Additionally, we have shown on the most efficient example that chloride could be exchanged very easily by other halides/pseudohalides (Br-, I-, NCS-, N3-) allowing to slightly modulate the emitted colour while conserving the polymeric structure, except for azide for which a dimer was obtained. The combination of chemical analyses, of photoluminescence studies in the solid state including quantum yield measurement and X-ray diffraction on single crystals and as-synthesized microcrystalline powders highlighted that the polymeric luminescent species was indeed obtained directly by simple filtration and that no major alteration of the structure was observed upon recrystallisation. Samples of all polymeric complexes displayed remarkable stability towards air oxidation remaining unchanged upon storage for several months and partially retaining their photoluminescence properties even after a thermal treatment at 100 °C for 24 h.

A Different Perspective on Tuning the Photophysical and Photochemical Properties: The Influence of Constitutional Isomers in Group 6 Carbonyl Complexes with Pyridyl-Mesoionic Carbenes

Exploring novel and existing design principles to tune the photochemical and photophysical properties of transition-metal complexes is an important goal in contemporary research. Here, we highlight the influence of constitutional isomers of pyridyl-1,2,3-triazolylidene mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligands on the photophysical and photochemical properties of the corresponding tetracarbonyl group 6 metal complexes (M = Cr, Mo, W). All new complexes [M(C-C)] presented herein incorporate a C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand and were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, and 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Detailed photophysical investigations reveal a single emission in the VIS region, which extends into the NIR with lifetimes of up to 3.5 μs in the solid state at lower temperatures. The quantum yields were determined for all three complexes, and, in particular, the W0 complex shows an unusually high quantum yield of 29% compared to the values of 0.02% obtained for the [M(C-N)] isomers investigated in earlier works. Beyond this, the investigated W0 complex also exhibits an emission at 717 nm in a fluid solution. The combination of luminescence and FTIR-step scan spectroscopy with theoretical calculations reveals an emissive 3MLCT state. Irradiation of the presented complexes leads to a clean cleavage of one axial CO ligand. A metastable 16 VE species with a vacant axial coordination site was detected in the solid state at low temperatures. In solution, the respective solvato complexes are formed. A dark reverse reaction is observed, as previously described for the [M(C-N)] analogues. The increased electron density induced by the C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand leads to an increased kinetic rate constant for the reformation of the starting species and is also reflected in the lower photodissociation quantum yields.

Electronic Structure and Excited-State Dynamics of the NIR-II Emissive Molybdenum(III) Analogue to the Molecular Ruby

Photoactive chromium(III) complexes saw a conceptual breakthrough with the discovery of the prototypical molecular ruby mer-[Cr(ddpd)2]3+ (ddpd = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine), which shows intense long-lived near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence from metal-centered spin-flip states. In contrast to the numerous studies on chromium(III) photophysics, only 10 luminescent molybdenum(III) complexes have been reported so far. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of mer-MoX3(ddpd) (1, X = Cl; 2, X = Br) and cisfac-[Mo(ddpd)2]3+ (cisfac-[3]3+), an isomeric heavy homologue of the prototypical molecular ruby. For cisfac-[3]3+, we found strong zero-field splitting using magnetic susceptibility measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Electronic spectra covering the spin-forbidden transitions show that the spin-flip states in mer-1, mer-2, and cisfac-[3]3+ are much lower in energy than those in comparable chromium(III) compounds. While all three complexes show weak spin-flip phosphorescence in NIR-II, the emission of cisfac-[3]3+ peaking at 1550 nm is particularly low in energy. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals a short excited-state lifetime of 1.4 ns, 6 orders of magnitude shorter than that of mer-[Cr(ddpd)2]3+. Using density functional theory and ab initio multireference calculations, we break down the reasons for this disparity and derive principles for the design of future stable photoactive molybdenum(III) complexes.

Ferrous and ferric complexes with cyclometalating N-heterocyclic carbene ligands: a case of dual emission revisited

Iron N-heterocyclic carbene (FeNHC) complexes with long-lived charge transfer states are emerging as a promising class of photoactive materials. We have synthesized [FeII(ImP)2] (ImP = bis(2,6-bis(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene-1-yl)phenylene)) that combines carbene ligands with cyclometalation for additionally improved ligand field strength. The 9 ps lifetime of its 3MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) state however reveals no benefit from cyclometalation compared to Fe(ii) complexes with NHC/pyridine or pure NHC ligand sets. In acetonitrile solution, the Fe(ii) complex forms a photoproduct that features emission characteristics (450 nm, 5.1 ns) that were previously attributed to a higher (2MLCT) state of its Fe(iii) analogue [FeIII(ImP)2]+, which led to a claim of dual (MLCT and LMCT) emission. Revisiting the photophysics of [FeIII(ImP)2]+, we confirmed however that higher (2MLCT) states of [FeIII(ImP)2]+ are short-lived (<10 ps) and therefore, in contrast to the previous interpretation, cannot give rise to emission on the nanosecond timescale. Accordingly, pristine [FeIII(ImP)2]+ prepared by us only shows red emission from its lower 2LMCT state (740 nm, 240 ps). The long-lived, higher energy emission previously reported for [FeIII(ImP)2]+ is instead attributed to an impurity, most probably a photoproduct of the Fe(ii) precursor. The previously reported emission quenching on the nanosecond time scale hence does not support any excited state reactivity of [FeIII(ImP)2]+ itself.

Direct Evidence for Excited Ligand Field State-based Oxidative Photoredox Chemistry of a Cobalt(III) Polypyridyl Photosensitizer

Increasing interest in sustainable chemistry coupled with the quest to explore new reactivity has spurred research on first-row transition metal complexes for potential applications in a variety of settings. One of the more active areas of research is photoredox catalysis, where the synthetically tunable nature of their electronic structures provides a rich palette of options for tailoring their reactivity to a desired chemical transformation. Understanding the mechanism of excited-state reactivity is critical for the informed development of next-generation catalysts, which in turn requires information concerning the propensity of their electronic excited states to engage in the desired electron or energy transfer processes. Herein we provide direct evidence of the highly oxidizing nature of the lowest-energy ligand-field (LF) excited state of a first-row d6-low-spin Co(III) photosensitizer [Co(4,4'-Br2bpy)3]3+ (where 4,4'-Br2bpy is 4,4'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine). The redox potential associated with the LF excited state of the Co(III) complex was bracketed by performing bimolecular quenching studies by using a series of simple organic electron donors. Time-resolved absorption spectroscopy confirmed a dynamic quenching process attributed to reductive quenching of the lowest-energy ligand-field excited state of the Co(III) chromophore. Analysis of the Stern-Volmer plots for each chromophore-quencher pair revealed a limiting value of Ered* ∼ 1.25 V vs Fc/Fc+ for the metal-centered excited state, which is significantly stronger than that of more commonly employed transition metal-based photoredox agents such as [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (Ered* = 0.32 V vs Fc/Fc+) and [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]+ (Ered* = 0.27 V vs Fc/Fc+). These results suggest that this class of chromophores could find utility in applications requiring the activation of oxidatively resistant organic substrates for photoredox catalysis.

Binuclear Copper(I) Complexes for Near-Infrared Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

Two binuclear heteroleptic CuI complexes, namely Cu-NIR1 and Cu-NIR2, bearing rigid chelating diphosphines and π-conjugated 2,5-di(pyridin-2-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole as the bis-bidentate ligand are presented. The proposed dinuclearization strategy yields a large bathochromic shift of the emission when compared to the mononuclear counterparts (M1-M2) and enables shifting luminescence into the near-infrared (NIR) region in both solution and solid state, showing emission maximum at ca. 750 and 712 nm, respectively. The radiative process is assigned to an excited state with triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3 MLCT) character as demonstrated by in-depth photophysical and computational investigation. Noteworthy, X-ray analysis of the binuclear complexes unravels two interligand π-π-stacking interactions yielding a doubly locked structure that disfavours flattening of the tetrahedral coordination around the CuI centre in the excited state and maintain enhanced NIR luminescence. No such interaction is present in M1-M2. These findings prompt the successful use of Cu-NIR1 and Cu-NIR2 in NIR light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), which display electroluminescence maximum up to 756 nm and peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.43 %. Their suitability for the fabrication of white-emitting LECs is also demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first examples of NIR electroluminescent devices based on earth-abundant CuI emitters.

Photoinduced iron-catalyzed C-H alkylation of polyolefins

Chemically introducing diverse polar groups into polyolefins via carbon-hydrogen bond alkylation with polar olefins is of substantial value in the synthesis of next-generation lightweight thermoplastics, which is still underdeveloped. In this work, we report a new approach for efficient carbon-hydrogen bond alkylation in commodity polyolefins using photoinduced iron catalysis. Various polyolefins could be functionalized with broad scope. Polar groups could be incorporated in a single step. The controllable synthesis of multi-polar functional polyolefins could be achieved by a designed module-assembled process. Remarkably, even low levels of functionalization could upcycle the polyolefin materials to exhibit unusual physical properties, such as enhancement of the transparencies, strains, stresses at break of the materials, and hydrophilicity.

High-Efficiency Photoinduced Charge Separation in Fe(III)carbene Thin Films

Symmetry-breaking charge separation in molecular materials has attracted increasing attention for optoelectronics based on single-material active layers. To this end, Fe(III) complexes with particularly electron-donating N-heterocyclic carbene ligands offer interesting properties with a 2LMCT excited state capable of oxidizing or reducing the complex in its ground state. In this Communication, we show that the corresponding symmetry-breaking charge separation occurs in amorphous films of pristine [Fe(III)L2]PF6 (L = [phenyl(tris(3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene))borate]-). Excitation of the solid material with visible light leads to ultrafast electron transfer quenching of the 2LMCT excited state, generating Fe(II) and Fe(IV) products with high efficiency. Sub-picosecond charge separation followed by recombination in about 1 ns could be monitored by transient absorption spectroscopy. Photoconductivity measurements of films deposited on microelectrode arrays demonstrated that photogenerated charge carriers can be collected at external contacts.

Changing Directions: Influence of Ligand Electronics on the Directionality and Kinetics of Photoinduced Charge Transfer in Cu(I)Diimine Complexes

A key challenge to the effective utilization of solar energy is to promote efficient photoinduced charge transfer, specifically avoiding unproductive, circuitous electron-transfer pathways and optimizing the kinetics of charge separation and recombination. We hypothesize that one way to address this challenge is to develop a fundamental understanding of how to initiate and control directional photoinduced charge transfer, particularly for earth-abundant first-row transition-metal coordination complexes, which typically suffer from relatively short excited-state lifetimes. Here, we report a series of functionalized heteroleptic copper(I)bis(phenanthroline) complexes, which have allowed us to investigate the directionality of intramolecular photoinduced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) as a function of the substituent Hammett parameter. Ultrafast transient absorption suggests a complicated interplay of MLCT localization and solvent interaction with the Cu(II) center of the MLCT state. This work provides a set of design principles for directional charge transfer in earth-abundant complexes and can be used to efficiently design pathways for connecting the molecular modules to catalysts or electrodes and integration into systems for light-driven catalysis.
