Lanthanidocenes: Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding of Linear Sandwich Complexes of Lanthanides

Photon-Modulated Bond Covalency of [Sm(II)(η9-C9H9)2]

Lanthanides are widely assumed not to form covalent bonds due to the localized nature of their 4f valence electrons. This work demonstrates that the ionic bond of Sm(II) with cyclononatetraenyl (η9-C9H9-) in [Sm(η9-C9H9)2] can be modulated and becomes more covalent by photon-induced transfer of Sm 4f electrons to Sm 5d orbitals. This photon-induced change in bonding properties facilitates a subsequent reconfiguration of [Sm(η9-C9H9)2]. As a result, Sm-C bond length contraction is detected and the local Sm coordination environment exhibits more extensive disorder. Both Sm 4f and 5d electrons have increased participation in covalent Sm-ligand interactions. The Sm L3-edge valence band resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VB-RIXS), high-resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES), and quantum chemical computations showcase a spectroscopic methodology for in-depth studies of bond covalency of lanthanide atoms.

Ligand Effects on the Spin Relaxation Dynamics and Coherent Manipulation of Organometallic La(II) Potential Qudits

We present pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies on three La(II) complexes, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][La(Cp')3] (1), [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][La(Cp″)3] (2), and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][La(Cptt)3] (3), which feature cyclopentadienyl derivatives as ligands [Cp' = C5H4SiMe3; Cp″ = C5H3(SiMe3)2; Cptt = C5H3(CMe3)2] and display a C3 symmetry. Long spin-lattice relaxation (T1) and phase memory (Tm) times are observed for all three compounds, but with significant variation in T1 among 1-3, with 3 being the slowest relaxing due to higher s-character of the SOMO. The dephasing times can be extended by more than an order of magnitude via dynamical decoupling experiments using a Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) sequence, reaching 161 μs (5 K) for 3. Coherent spin manipulation is performed by the observation of Rabi quantum oscillations up to 80 K in this nuclear spin-rich environment (1H, 13C, and 29Si). The high nuclear spin of 139La (I = 7/2), and the ability to coherently manipulate all eight hyperfine transitions, makes these molecules promising candidates for application as qudits (multilevel quantum systems featuring d quantum states; d >2) for performing quantum operations within a single molecule. Application of HYSCORE techniques allows us to quantify the electron spin density at ligand nuclei and interrogate the role of functional groups to the electron spin relaxation properties.

Cycloheptatrienyl-Bridged Triple-Decker Complexes

The first structurally characterized organometallic multidecker sandwich complexes featuring a cycloheptatrienyl ring (Cht, C7H73-) in the coordination sphere are presented. The synthesis of inverse sandwich complexes of the rare earth elements YIII and ErIII with a bridging cycloheptatrienyl ligand of the type [(thf)(BH4)2LnIII(μ-η7:η7-Cht)LnIII(BH4)(thf)2] is described first. The subsequent introduction of the CotTIPS ligand (CotTIPS = 1,4-(iPr3Si)2C8H62-) into the coordination sphere of the rare earth cations resulted in the isolation of unprecedented triple-decker compounds with the formula [(thf)3K{(η8-CotTIPS)LnIII}2(μ-η7:η7-Cht)], bearing a seven-membered aromatic carbon ring as a middle deck. These compounds are also the first examples of rare earth triple-decker complexes not bridged by a Cot derivative, based on purely carbon-based ligands. The magnetic properties of the respective ErIII congeners were investigated in detail, leading to the observation of antiferromagnetic coupling of the ErIII cations and a blocking temperature of 13.5 K. The conversion of the YIII compound [(thf)3K{(η8-CotTIPS)YIII}2(μ-η7:η7-Cht)] with [YIII(Cot)I(thf)2] resulted in ligand rearrangement and the selective formation of the first triple-decker complex ([(η8-CotTIPSYIII)2(μ-η8:η8-Cot)]) featuring two Cot ligands with different substituents in its coordination sphere.

Tris(carbene)borates; alternatives to cyclopentadienyls in organolanthanide chemistry

The chemistry of the tris-carbene anion phenyltris(3-alkyl-imidazoline-2-yliden-1-yl)borate, [C3Me]- ligand, is initiated for f-block metal cations. Neutral, molecular complexes of the form Ln(C3)2I are formed for cerium(III), while a separated ion pair [Ln(C3)2]I forms for ytterbium(III). DFT/QTAIM computational analyses of the complexes and related tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) - supported analogs demonstrates the anticipated strength of the σ donation and confirms greater covalency in the metal-carbon bonds of the [C3Me]- complexes in comparison with those in the TpMe,Me complexes. The DFT calculations demonstrate the crucial role of THF solvent in accurately reproducing the contrasting molecular and ion-pair geometries observed experimentally for the Ce and Yb complexes.

Back to the future of organolanthanide chemistry

At the dawn of the development of structural organometallic chemistry, soon after the discovery of ferrocene, the description of the LnCp₃ complexes, featuring large and mostly trivalent lanthanide ions, was rather original and sparked curiosity. Yet, the interest in these new architectures rapidly dwindled due to the electrostatic nature of the bonding between π-aromatic ligands and 4f-elements. Almost 70 years later, it is interesting to focus on how the discipline has evolved in various directions with the reports of multiple catalytic reactivities, remarkable potential in small molecule activation, and the development of rich redox chemistry. Aside from chemical reactivity, a better understanding of their singular electronic nature - not precisely as simplistic as anticipated - has been crucial for developing tailored compounds with adapted magnetic anisotropy or high fluorescence properties that have witnessed significant popularity in recent years. Future developments shall greatly benefit from the detailed reactivity, structural and physical chemistry studies, particularly in photochemistry, electro- or photoelectrocatalysis of inert small molecules, and manipulating the spins' coherence in quantum technology.

Molecular Lanthanide Switches for Magnetism and Photoluminescence

Solvation of [(CNT)Ln(η⁸ -COT)] (Ln=La, Ce, Nd, Tb, Er; CNT=cyclononatetraenyl, i.e., C₉ H₉ ^- ; COT=cyclooctatetraendiid, i.e., C₈ H₈ ^2- ) complexes with tetrahydrofuran (THF) gives rise to neutral [(η⁴ -CNT)Ln(thf)₂ (η⁸ -COT)] (Ln=La, Ce) and ionic [Ln(thf)_x (η⁸ -COT)][CNT] (x=4 (Ce, Nd, Tb), 3 (Er)) species in a solid-to-solid transformation. Due to the severe distortion of the ligand sphere upon solvation, these species act as switchable luminophores and single-molecule magnets. The desolvation of the coordinated solvents can be triggered by applying a dynamic vacuum, as well as a temperature gradient stimulus. Raman spectroscopic investigations revealed fast and fully reversible solvation and desolvation processes. Moreover, we also show that a Nd:YAG laser can induce the necessary temperature gradient for a self-sufficient switching process of the Ce(III) analogue in a spatially resolved manner.

Thorium- and Uranium-Mediated C-H Activation of a Silyl-Substituted Cyclobutadienyl Ligand

Cyclobutadienyl complexes of the f-elements are a relatively new yet poorly understood class of sandwich and half-sandwich organometallic compounds. We now describe cyclobutadienyl transfer reactions of the magnesium reagent [(η⁴-Cb'''')Mg(THF)₃] (1), where Cb'''' is tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadienyl, toward thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) tetrachlorides. The 1:1 stoichiometric reactions between 1 and AnCl₄ proceed with intact transfer of Cb'''' to give the half-sandwich complexes [(η⁴-Cb'''')AnCl(μ-Cl)₃Mg(THF)₃] (An = Th, 2; An = U, 3). Using a 2:1 reaction stoichiometry produces [Mg₂Cl₃(THF)₆][(η⁴-Cb'''')An(η³-C₄H(SiMe₃)₃-κ-(CH₂SiMe₂)(Cl)] (An = Th, [Mg₂Cl₃(THF)₆][4]; An = U [Mg₂Cl₃(THF)₆][5]), in which one Cb'''' ligand has undergone cyclometalation of a trimethylsilyl group, resulting in the formation of an An-C σ-bond, protonation of the four-membered ring, and an η³-allylic interaction with the actinide. Complex solution-phase dynamics are observed with multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for both sandwich complexes. A computational analysis of the reaction mechanism leading to the formation of 4 and 5 indicates that the cyclobutadienyl ligands undergo C-H activation across the actinide center.

Axial Ligand as a Critical Factor for High-Performance Pentagonal Bipyramidal Dy(III) Single-Ion Magnets

The choice of axial ligands is of great importance for the construction of high-performance Dy-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, combining axial ligands Ph₃SiO^- (anion of triphenylsilanol) and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^- (the anion of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenol) with a neutral macrocyclic ligand 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadeca-1(19),2,13,15,17-pentaene (L₂^N5) generates two new pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes [Dy^III(L₂^N5) (X)₂](BPh₄) (X = Ph₃SiO^-, 1; 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^-, 2) with strong axial ligand fields. Magnetic characterizations show that 1 possesses a large energy barrier above 1000 K and a magnetic hysteresis up to 9 K, whereas 2 only displays field-induced peaks of alternating-current susceptibilities without the hysteresis loop, even though 2 has a similar coordination geometry with 1. Detailed Ab initio calculations indicate an apparent difference in the axial negative charge between both complexes, which is caused by the diverse electron-donating properties of the axial ligands. The present work provides an efficient strategy to enhance the SMMs' properties, which highlights that the electron-donating property of the axial ligands is especially important for constructing the high-performance Dy-based SMMs.

Silole and germole complexes of lanthanum and cerium

Using dianionic metallole ligands (silole or germole) and the cyclooctatetraendiide dianion, heteroleptic lanthanide multi-decker complexes have been prepared. Due to the heteroatom of the metallole ligands intermolecular bridging between the sandwich complexes takes place. Our work highlights that different combinations of the lanthanide and heterocycle lead to different intermolecular interactions including a dimeric La-silole sandwich complex, a La-germole ladder-type polymeric species and a Ce-germole coordination polymer.

Selective carbon-phosphorus bond cleavage: expanding the toolbox for accessing bulky divalent lanthanoid sandwich complexes

The synthesis of two new tetra- and penta-phenycyclopentadienyldiphenylphosphine pro-ligands which readily undergo selective C-P bond cleavage has allowed for the facile synthesis of bulky divalent octa- and deca-phenylmetallocenes of europium, ytterbium and samarium.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

The Archetypal Homoleptic Lanthanide Quadruple-Decker-Synthesis, Mechanistic Studies, and Quantum Chemical Investigations

Reduction of [SmIII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )(BH4 )(thf)] (COT1,4-SiiPr3 =1,4-(i Pr3 Si)3 C8 H6 ) with KC8 resulted in [SmIII/II/III (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )4 ], the first example of a homoleptic lanthanide quadruple-decker. As indicated by an analysis of the bond metrics in the solid-state, the inner Sm ion is present in the divalent oxidation state, while the outer ones are trivalent. This observation could be confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. Mechanistic studies revealed not only insight into possible formation pathways of [SmIII/II/III (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )4 ] but also resulted in the transformation to other mixed metal sandwich complexes with unique structural properties. These are the 1D-polymeric chain structured [KSmIII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )]n and the hexametallic species [(tol)K(COT1,4-SiiPr3 )SmII (COT1,4-SiiPr3 )K]2 which were initially envisioned as possible building blocks as part of different retrosynthetically guided pathways that we developed.

Size-Controlled Hapticity Switching in [Ln(C9 H9 )(C8 H8 )] Sandwiches

Sandwich complexes of lanthanides have recently attracted a considerable amount of interest due to their applications as Single Molecule Magnet (SMM). Herein, a comprehensive series of heteroleptic lanthanide sandwich complexes ligated by the cyclononatetraenyl (Cnt) and the cyclooctatetraenyl (Cot) ligand [Ln(Cot)(Cnt)] (Ln=Tb, Dy, Er, Ho, Yb, and Lu) is reported. The coordination behavior of the Cnt ligand has been investigated along the series and shows different coordination patterns in the solid-state depending on the size of the corresponding lanthanide ion without altering its overall anisotropy. Besides the characterization in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by 1 H NMR, static magnetic studies and ab initio computational studies were performed.

Magnetic properties of organolanthanide(II) complexes, from the electronic structure and the crystal field effect

The magnetic properties of a series of organometallic complexes [LnCp3]- and Ln(CNT)2, where Cp = cyclopentadienyl and CNT = cyclononatetraenyl, of the lanthanide ions in the 2+ oxidation state, are theoretically studied in terms of the electronic structure obtained via multiconfigurational wave function-based methods. Calculations are performed for two groups of ion complexes selected based on their preferred electronic configuration 4fn+1 or 4fn5d1 (n is the number of f electrons in the 3+ ion). All the properties are discussed in terms of the electron density distribution of the ground state and ligand field effects. This analysis allows giving some molecular design strategies relevant to exploit the magnetic properties in applications like Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) for lanthanide ions in the 2+ oxidation state.

High-Frequency and -Field Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Analysis of Metal-Ligand Covalency in a 4f7 Valence Series (Eu2+, Gd3+, and Tb4+)

The recent isolation of molecular tetravalent lanthanide complexes has enabled renewed exploration of the effect of oxidation state on the single-ion properties of the lanthanide ions. Despite the isotropic nature of the ⁸S ground state in a tetravalent terbium complex, [Tb(NP(1,2-bis-^tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt₂))₄], preliminary X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on tetravalent terbium complexes show rich spectra with broad resonances. The complexity of these spectra highlights the limits of conventional X-band EPR for even qualitative determination of zero-field splitting (ZFS) in these complexes. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel valence series of 4f⁷ molecular complexes spanning three oxidation states (Eu²⁺, Gd³⁺, and Tb⁴⁺) featuring a weak-field imidophosphorane ligand system, and employ high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) to obtain quantitative values for ZFS across this valence series. The series was designed to minimize deviation in the first coordination sphere from the pseudotetrahedral geometry in order to directly interrogate the role of metal identity and charge on the complexes' electronic structures. These HFEPR studies are supported by crystallographic analysis and quantum-chemical calculations to assess the relative covalent interactions in each member of this valence series and the effect of the oxidation state on the splitting of the ground state and first excited state.

Redox activity of a dissymmetric ligand bridging divalent ytter-bium and reactive nickel fragments

The reaction of a reactive nickel dimethyl 1 bearing a redox-active, dissymmetric ligand, which is obtained by deprotonation of 2-pyrimidin-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole (Hbimpm) with a divalent lanthanide complex, Cp*₂Yb(OEt₂), affords an unprecedented, trimeric 2 with C(sp³)-C(sp³) bond formation between two ligands in an exo position. Meanwhile, the transient, dimeric species 3 can be isolated with the same ligand coupling fashion, however, with a drastic distorsion angle of the bimpm ligand and reactive NiMe₂ fragment, revealing the possible mechanism of this rearrangement. A much more stable dimeric congener, 5, with an exo ligand coupling, is synthesized in the presence of 18-crown-6, which captures the potassium counter ion. The C-C coupling formation between two bimpm ligands results from the effective electron transfer from divalent lanthanide fragments. Without the divalent lanthanide, the reductive coupling occurs on a different carbon of the ligand, nicely showing the modulation of the spin density induced by the presence of the lanthanide ion. The electronic structures of these complexes are investigated by magnetic study (SQUID), indicating a ²F_7/2 ground state for each ytterbium in all the heterometallics. This work firstly reports ligand coupling reactivity in a redox-active, yet dissymmetric system with divalent organolanthanides, and the reactive nickel moiety can impact the intriguing transition towards a stable homoleptic, trinulear lanthanide species.

Synthesis, bonding properties and ether activation reactivity of cyclobutadienyl-ligated hybrid uranocenes

A series of hybrid uranocenes consisting of uranium(iv) sandwiched between cyclobutadienyl (Cb) and cyclo-octatetraenyl (COT) ligands has been synthesized, structurally characterized and studied computationally. The dimetallic species [(η4-Cb'''')(η8-COT)U(μ:η2:η8-COT)U(THF)(η4-Cb'''')] (1) forms concomitantly with, and can be separated from, monometallic [(η4-Cb'''')U(THF)(η8-COT)] (2) (Cb'''' = 1,2,3,4-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadienyl, COT = cyclo-octatetraenyl). In toluene solution at room temperature, 1 dissociates into 2 and the unsolvated uranocene [(η4-Cb'''')U(η8-COT)] (3). By applying a high vacuum, both 1 and 2 can be converted directly into 3. Using bulky silyl substituents on the COT ligand allowed isolation of base-free [(η4-Cb'''')U{η8-1,4-(iPr3Si)2C8H6}] (4), with compounds 3 and 4 being new members of the bis(annulene) family of actinocenes and the first to contain a cyclobutadienyl ligand. Computational studies show that the bonding in the hybrid uranocenes 3 and 4 has non-negligible covalency. New insight into actinocene bonding is provided by the complementary interactions of the different ligands with uranium, whereby the 6d orbitals interact most strongly with the cyclobutadienyl ligand and the 5f orbitals do so with the COT ligands. The redox-neutral activation of diethyl ether by [(η4-Cb'''')U(η8-C8H8)] is also described and represents a uranium-cyclobutadienyl cooperative process, potentially forming the basis of further small-molecule activation chemistry.

Seven-coordinate LnIII complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour

The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Blocking like it's hot: a synthetic chemists' path to high-temperature lanthanide single molecule magnets

Progress in the synthesis, design, and characterisation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has expanded dramatically from curiosity driven beginnings to molecules that retain magnetization above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. This is in no small part due to the increasingly collaborative nature of this research where synthetic targets are guided by theoretical design criteria. This article aims to summarize these efforts and progress from the perspective of a synthetic chemist with a focus on how chemistry can modulate physical properties. A simple overview is presented of lanthanide electronic structure in order to contextualize the synthetic advances that have led to drastic improvements in the performance of lanthanide-based SMMs from the early 2000s to the late 2010s.

Highly fluorescent aryl-cyclopentadienyl ligands and their tetra-nuclear mixed metallic potassium-dysprosium clusters

Two alkyl substituted triaryl-cyclopentadienyl ligands [4,4′-(4-phenylcyclopenta-1,3-diene-1,2-diyl)bis(methylbenzene) (1) and 4,4′,4′′-(cyclopenta-1,3-diene-1,2,4-triyl)tris(methylbenzene) (2)] have been synthesized via cross-aldol condensation followed by Zn-dust mediated cyclization and acid catalyzed dehydration reactions. The fluorescence properties of 1 and 2 have been studied in solution and solid state. The ligands exhibited aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in THF/water solution. 1 and 2 have been found to be significantly more fluorescent in the solid state than in their respective solutions. This phenomenon can be attributed to the strong intermolecular CH⋯π interactions present in 1 and 2 which leads to the tight packing of molecules in their solid-state. Both 1, 2 and their corresponding anions have been studied by theoretical calculations. Ligands 1 and 2 have been shown to react with anhydrous DyCl₃ in the presence of potassium metal at high temperature to afford two fluorescent chloride-bridged tetra-nuclear mixed potassium–dysprosium metallocenes [(Me₂Cp)₄Dy₂^IIICl₄K₂]·3.5(C₇H₈) (5) and [(Me₃Cp)₄Dy₂^IIICl₄K₂]·3(C₇H₈) (6), respectively in good yields.

Alkyl substituted triaryl-cyclopentadienyl ligands with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties and their applications in the syntheses of novel chloride bridged tetra-nuclear mixed potassium–dysprosium metallocenes.

Heteroleptic actinocenes: a thorium(iv)-cyclobutadienyl-cyclooctatetraenyl-di-potassium-cyclooctatetraenyl complex

Despite the vast array of η n -carbocyclic C5-8 complexes reported for actinides, cyclobutadienyl (C4) remain exceedingly rare, being restricted to six uranium examples. Here, overcoming the inherent challenges of installing highly reducing C4-ligands onto actinides when using polar starting materials such as halides, we report that reaction of [Th(η8-C8H8)2] with [K2{C4(SiMe3)4}] gives [{Th(η4-C4[SiMe3]4)(μ-η8-C8H8)(μ-η2-C8H8)(K[C6H5Me]2)}2{K(C6H5Me)}{K}] (1), a new type of heteroleptic actinocene. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the thorium ion engages in π- and δ-bonding to the η4-cyclobutadienyl and η8-cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, respectively. Furthermore, the coordination sphere of this bent thorocene analogue is supplemented by an η2-cyclooctatetraenyl interaction, which calculations suggest is composed of σ- and π-symmetry donations from in-plane in- and out-of-phase C[double bond, length as m-dash]C 2p-orbital combinations to vacant thorium 6d orbitals. The characterisation data are consistent with this being a metal-alkene-type interaction that is integral to the bent structure and stability of this complex.

Electronic Structure and Photoluminescence Properties of Eu(η9-C9H9)2

The electronic structure of Eu²⁺ compounds results from a complex combination of strongly correlated electrons and relativistic effects as well as weak ligand-field interaction. There is tremendous interest in calculating the electronic structure as nowadays the Eu²⁺ ion is becoming more and more crucial, for instance, in lighting technologies. Recently, interest in semiempirical methods to qualitatively evaluate the electronic structure and to model the optical spectra has gained popularity, although the theoretical methods strongly rely upon empirical inputs, hindering their prediction capabilities. Besides, ab initio multireference models are computationally heavy and demand very elaborative theoretical background. Herein, application of the ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) method that is recently available in the Amsterdam Modeling Suite is shown: (i) to elucidate the electronic structure properties on the basis of the multiplet energy levels of Eu configurations 4f⁷ and 4f⁶5d¹ and (ii) to model the optical spectra quite accurately if compared to the conventional time-dependent density functional theory tool. We present a theoretical study of the molecular Eu(η⁹-C₉H₉)₂ complex and its underlying photoluminescence properties with respect to the Eu 4f-5d electron transitions. We model the excitation and emission spectra with good agreement with the experiments, opening up the possibility of modeling lanthanides in complex environment like nanomaterials by means of LFDFT at much-reduced computational resources and cost.

Breaking the axiality of pentagonal–bipyramidal dysprosium(iii) single-molecule magnets with pyrazolate ligands

Ten air-stable dysprosium(iii) SMMs with destroyed pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry imposed by axial bidentate-chelating pyrazolate ligands are studied, showing substitutional effect on axial ligands and no effect on equatorial ligands.

Synthesis of homoleptic, divalent lanthanide (Sm, Eu) complexes via oxidative transmetallation

The direct synthesis of neutral, divalent samarium and europium complexes supported by the bulky bis(tris-tert-butoxysilyl)amide (BTTSA) ligand via oxidative transmetallation is reported. Through the use of a copper(i) ligand complex, conventional lanthanide halide starting materials for complex formation are circumvented and the clean formation of divalent complexes is achieved directly from the bulk metal. The structures of the [Ln(BTTSA)₂] (Ln = Sm, Eu) complexes are isotypic, presenting divalent lanthanide ions with distorted, six-coordinate geometries.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic properties of [(η9-C9H9)Ln(η8-C8H8)] super sandwich complexes

Sandwich complexes are an indispensable part of organometallic chemistry, which is becoming increasingly important in the field of lanthanide-based single molecule magnets. Herein, a fundamental class of pure sandwich complexes, [(η⁹-C₉H₉)Ln(η⁸-C₈H₈)] (Ln=Nd, Sm, Dy, Er), is reported. These neutral and sandwiched lanthanide compounds exclusively contain fully π-coordinated coplanar eight and nine membered CH rings. The magnetic properties of these compounds are investigated, leading to the observation of slow relaxation of the magnetization, including open hysteresis loops up to 10 K for the Er(III) analogue. Fast relaxation of the magnetization is likewise observed near zero field, a highly important characteristic for quantum information processing schemes. Our synthetic strategy is straightforward and utilizes the reaction of [(η⁸-C₈H₈)LnI(thf)_n] complexes with [K(C₉H₉)]. Although all compounds are fully characterized, structural details of the title compounds can also be deduced by Raman spectroscopy only.

Uranocenium: Synthesis, Structure, and Chemical Bonding

Abstraction of iodide from [(η⁵ -C₅ ⁱ Pr₅ )₂ UI] (1) produced the cationic uranium(III) metallocene [(η⁵ -C₅ ⁱ Pr₅ )₂ U]⁺ (2) as a salt of [B(C₆ F₅ )₄ ]^- . The structure of 2 consists of unsymmetrically bonded cyclopentadienyl ligands and a bending angle of 167.82° at uranium. Analysis of the bonding in 2 showed that the uranium 5f orbitals are strongly split and mixed with the ligand orbitals, thus leading to non-negligible covalent contributions to the bonding. Investigation of the dynamic magnetic properties of 2 revealed that the 5f covalency leads to partially quenched anisotropy and fast magnetic relaxation in zero applied magnetic field. Application of a magnetic field leads to dominant relaxation by a Raman process.

Synthesis and molecular structure of enantiomerically pure pentadienyl complexes of the rare-earth metals

The enantiomerically pure pentadienyl (Pdl*) ligand derived from the natural product (1R)-(-)-myrtenal forms with MCl₃ (M = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) the corresponding homoleptic [(η⁵-U-Pdl*)₃M compounds (1-M). These complexes were fully characterised by ¹H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and X-ray diffraction. They exhibit in solution and solid state idealized C₃ symmetry, and their molecular structures also reveal that the Pdl* ligand adopts a U-conformation and coordinates exclusively with its less sterically encumbered face to the rare-earth metal atom. For the paramagnetic representatives an assignment of the ¹H NMR resonances based on a simple dipolar model gave satisfactory results.

Multiple Bonding in Lanthanides and Actinides: Direct Comparison of Covalency in Thorium(IV)- and Cerium(IV)-Imido Complexes

A series of thorium(IV)-imido complexes was synthesized and characterized. Extensive experimental and computational comparisons with the isostructural cerium(IV)-imido complexes revealed a notably more covalent bonding arrangement for the Ce═N bond compared with the more ionic Th═N bond. The thorium-imido moieties were observed to be 3 orders of magnitude more basic than their cerium congeners. More generally, these results provide unique experimental evidence for the larger covalent character of 4f⁰5d⁰ Ce(IV) multiple bonds compared to its 5f⁰6d⁰ Th(IV) actinide congener.

Rare earth elements: Mendeleev’s bane, modern marvels

The rare earths (REs) are a family of 17 elements that exhibit pronounced chemical similarities as a group, while individually expressing distinctive and varied electronic properties. These atomistic electronic properties are extraordinarily useful and motivate the application of REs in many technologies and devices. From their discovery to the present day, a major challenge faced by chemists has been the separation of RE elements, which has evolved from tedious crystallization to highly engineered solvent extraction schemes. The increasing incorporation and dependence of REs in technology have raised concerns about their sustainability and motivated recent studies for improved separations to achieve a circular RE economy.
