Pd(II) Coordination Sphere Engineering: Pyridine Cages, Quinoline Bowls, and Heteroleptic Pills Binding One or Two Fullerenes

The use of collective variables and enhanced sampling in the simulations of existing and emerging microporous materials

Microporous materials, including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and cage compounds, offer diverse functionalities due to their unique dynamics and guest confinement properties. These materials play a significant role in separation, catalysis, and sensing, but their complexity hinders exploration using traditional atomistic simulations. This review explores collective variables (CVs) paired with enhanced sampling as a powerful approach to enable efficient investigation of key features in microporous materials. We highlight successful applications of CVs in studying adsorption, diffusion, phase transitions, and mechanical properties, demonstrating their crucial role in guiding material design and optimisation. The future of CVs lies in integration with techniques like machine learning, allowing for enhanced efficiency and accuracy. By tailoring CVs to specific materials and developing multi-scale approaches we can further unlock the intricacies of these fascinating materials. Simulations are a cornerstone in unravelling the complexities of microporous materials and are crucial for our future understanding.

Non-statistical assembly of multicomponent [Pd2ABCD] cages

Self-assembled hosts, inspired by biological receptors and catalysts, show application potential in sustainable synthesis, energy conversion and medicine. Implementing multiple functionalities in the form of distinguishable building blocks, however, is difficult without risking narcissistic self-sorting or a statistical mess. Here we report a systematic series of integratively self-assembled heteroleptic cages in which two square-planar PdII cations are bridged by four different bis-pyridyl ligands, A, B, C and D, via synergistic effects to exclusively form a single isomer-the lantern-shaped cage [Pd2ABCD]. This self-sorting goal-forming just one out of 55 possible structures-is reached under full thermodynamic control and can be realized progressively (by combining progenitors, such as [Pd2A2C2] with [Pd2B2D2]), directly from ligands and PdII cations or by mixing all four corresponding homoleptic cages. The rational design of complex multicomponent assemblies that enables the modular incorporation of diverse chemical moieties will advance their applicability in functional nanosystems.

Insight into the interaction of host-guest structures for pyrrole-based metal compounds and C70

This study focuses on the recognition and isolation of fullerenes, which are crucial for further exploration of their physical and chemical properties. Our goal is to investigate the potential recognition of the D5h-C70 fullerene using crown-shaped metal compositions through density functional theory calculations. We assess the effectiveness of fullerene C70 recognition by studying the binding energy. Additionally, various analyses were conducted, including natural bond order charge analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, to understand the interaction mechanism between the host and guest molecules. These investigations provide valuable insights into the nature of the interaction and the stability of the host-guest system. To facilitate the release of the fullerene guest molecule, the vis-NIR spectra were simulated for the host-guest structures. This analysis offers guidance on the specific wavelengths that can be utilized to release the fullerene guest from the host-guest structures. Overall, this work proposes a new strategy for the effective recognition of various fullerene molecules and their subsequent release from host-guest systems. These findings could potentially be applied in assemblies involving fullerenes, advancing their practical applications.

Heteromeric Completive Self-Sorting in Coordination Cage Systems

Heteroleptic coordination cages, nonstatistically assembled from a set of matching ligands, can be obtained by mixing individual components or via cage-to-cage transformations from homoleptic precursors. Based on the latter approach, we here describe a new level of self-sorting in coordination cage systems, namely, 'heteromeric completive self-sorting'. Here, two heteroleptic assemblies of type Pd2A2B2 and Pd2A2C2, sharing one common ligand component A but differing in the other, are shown to coexist in solution. This level of self-sorting can be reached either from a statistical mixture of assemblies based on some ligands B and C or, alternatively, following a first step of integrative self-sorting giving a distinct Pd2B2C2 intermediate. While subtle enthalpic factors dictate the outcome of the self-sorting, we found that it is controllable. From a unique set of three ligands, we demonstrate the transition from strict integrative self-sorting forming a Pd2AB2C cage to heteromeric completive self-sorting to give Pd2A2B2 and Pd2A2C2 by variation of the ligand ratio. Cage-to-cage transformations were followed by NMR and MS experiments. Single crystal X-ray structures for three new heteroleptic cages were obtained, impressively highlighting the versatility of ligand A to either form a π-stacked trans-figure-of-eight arrangement in Pd2A2B2 or occupy two cis-edges in Pd2A2C2 or only a single edge in Pd2AB2C. This study paves the way toward the control of heteroleptic cage populations in a systems chemistry context with emerging features such as chemical information processing, adaptive guest selectivity, or stimuli-responsive catalytic action.

Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Assembly of Six Types of Heteroleptic Pd2L4 Cages under Kinetic Control

Heteroleptic assemblies composed of several kinds of building blocks have been seen in nature. It is still unclear how natural systems design and create such complicated assemblies selectively. Past efforts on multicomponent self-assembly of artificial metal-organic cages have mainly focused on finding a suitable combination of building blocks to lead to a single multicomponent self-assembly as the thermodynamically most stable product. Here, we present another approach to selectively produce multicomponent Pd(II)-based self-assemblies under kinetic control based on the selective ligand exchanges of weak Pd-L coordination bonds retaining the original orientation of the metal centers in a kinetically stabilized cyclic structure and on local reversibility given in certain areas of the energy landscape in the presence of the assist molecule that facilitates error correction of coordination bonds. The kinetic approach enabled us to build all six types of Pd2L4 cages and heteroleptic tetranuclear cages composed of three kinds of ditopic ligands. Although the cage complexes thus obtained are metastable, they are stable for 1 month or more at room temperature.

Host-Guest Chemistry in Binary and Ternary Complexes Utilizing π-Conjugated Carbon Nanorings

The carbon nanorings, possessing a radial π system, have garnered significant attention primarily due to their size-dependent photophysical properties and the presence of a unique curved π-conjugated cavity. This is evidenced by the rapid proliferation of publications. Furthermore, the integration of building blocks into CPP skeletons can confer [n]CPPs with novel and exceptional photophysical and electronic characteristics, as well as chiral properties and host-guest interactions, thereby augmenting the diversity of [n]CPPs. Notably, the curved π surface structures and concave cavity of carbon nanorings enable them to host aromatic or non-aromatic guests with a complementarily curved surface, resulting in interesting binary or ternary complexes. This review provides a comprehensive treatment of literature reports on binary and ternary complexes, focusing on both their host-guest interactions and properties. It is important to note that the scope of this review is limited to host-guest chemistry in binary and ternary complexes based on π-conjugated carbon nanorings.

Chemical Site-Differentiation of Calix[4]arenes through Enforced Conformations by Confinement in a Cage

Desymmetrization of a symmetric skeleton enables late-stage functionalization of molecules. However, reagent-controlled desymmetrization by site-selective reactions of symmetric molecules remains a difficult synthetic strategy. Here, we found that complete confinement of a symmetric molecule within a coordination cage can desymmetrize the guest conformation, making it possible to site-selectively activate or protect the otherwise equivalent reaction sites of calix[4]arene derivatives. Multistep, one-cage reactions also demonstrated the transformation of an AAAA-type calix[4]arene into a lower symmetry ABAC-type one.

Recent update on the electroactive oligopyrrolic macrocyclic hosts with a Bucky-ball heart

Supramolecular chemistry is a multidisciplinary research area mostly associated with the investigation of host-guest interactions within intricate three-dimensional (3D) molecular architectures held together reversibly by various non-covalent interactions. Continuous efforts to develop such kinds of complex host-guest systems with designer oligopyrrolic macrocyclic receptors are a rapidly growing research domain, which is deeply involved in applied supramolecular chemistry research. These host-guest supramolecular complexes can be constructed by combining suitable electron-rich oligopyrrolic donors (as a host) with complementary electron-poor guests (as acceptors), held together by the ionic force of attraction triggered by intermolecular charge/electron transfer (CT/ET) transitions. Some of these resulting CT/ET ensembles are potential candidates for the construction of efficient optoelectronic materials, optical sensors, molecular switches, etc. In this Feature Article we aim to focus on these supramolecular ensembles composed by size and shape complementary electroactive oligopyrrolic molecular containers, which are suitable for spherical guest (e.g., buckminsterfullerene) complexation. We also provide a "state-of-the-art" overview on plausible applications of these particular host-guest systems. Our aim is to cover only specific electron-rich tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based oligopyrrolic receptors, e.g., TTF-calix[4]pyrroles, TTF-cryptands, TTF-porphyrins and exTTF-porphyrin-based molecular motifs reported to date, along with a brief outlining of their "functional behaviour" in materials chemistry research.

Supramolecular Subphthalocyanine Cage as Catalytic Container for the Functionalization of Fullerenes in Water

Herein we report the first example of a supramolecular cage that works as a catalytic molecular reactor to perform transformations over fullerenes in aqueous medium. Taking advantage of the ability of metallo-organic Pd(II)-subphthalocyanine (SubPc) capsules to form stable host:guest complexes with C60 , we have prepared a water-soluble cage that provides a hydrophobic environment for conducting cycloadditions over encapsulated C60 , namely, Diels-Alder reactions with anthracene. Indeed, the presence of catalytic amounts of SubPc cage dissolved in water promotes co-encapsulation of insoluble C60 and anthracene substrates, allowing the reaction to occur inside the cavity under mild conditions. The lower stability of the host:guest complex with the resulting C60 cycloadduct facilitates its displacement by pristine C60 , which grants catalytic turnover. Moreover, bis-addition compounds are regioselectively formed inside the cage when using excess anthracene.

Synthesis of C60 /[10]CPP-Catenanes by Regioselective, Nanocapsule-Templated Bingel Bis-Addition

The addition of two unsymmetric malonate esters to the Buckminster fullerene C60 can lead to 22 spectroscopically distinguishable isomeric products and therefore represents a formidable synthesis challenge. In this work, we achieve 87 % selectivity for the formation of a single (in,out-trans-3) isomer by combining three approaches: (i) we use a starting material, in which the two malonates are covalently connected (tether approach); (ii) we form the strong supramolecular complex of C60 with the shape-persistent [10]CPP macrocycle (template approach) and (iii) we embed this complex further within a self-assembled nanocapsule (shadow mask approach). Variation of the spacer chain shed light on the limitations of the approach and the ring dynamics in the unusual [2]catenanes were studied in silico with atomistic resolution. This work significantly widens the scope of mechanically interlocked architectures comprising cycloparaphenylenes (CPP).

Engineering Soluble Diketopyrrolopyrrole Chromophore Stacks from a Series of Pd(II)-Based Ravels

A strategy to engineer the stacking of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) dyes based on non-statistical metallosupramolecular self-assembly is introduced. For this, the DPP backbone is equipped with nitrogen-based donors that allow for different discrete assemblies to be formed upon the addition of Pd(II), distinguished by the number of π-stacked chromophores. A Pd3 L6 three-ring, a heteroleptic Pd2 L2 L'2 ravel composed of two crossing DPPs (flanked by two carbazoles), and two unprecedented self-penetrated motifs (a Pd2 L3 triple and a Pd2 L4 quadruple stack), were obtained and systematically investigated. With increasing counts of stacked chromophores, UV/Vis absorptions red-shift and emission intensities decrease, except for compound Pd2 L2 L'2 , which stands out with an exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield of 51 %. This is extraordinary for open-shell metal containing assemblies and explainable by an intra-assembly FRET process. The modular design and synthesis of soluble multi-chromophore building blocks offers the potential for the preparation of nanodevices and materials with applications in sensing, photo-redox catalysis and optics.

Exploiting reduced-symmetry ligands with pyridyl and imidazole donors to construct a second-generation stimuli-responsive heterobimetallic [PdPtL4]4+ cage

A new sequential metalation strategy that enables the assembly of a new more robust reduced symmetry heterobimetallic [PdPtL4]4+ cage C is reported. By exploiting a low-symmetry ditopic ligand (L) that features imidazole and pyridine donor units we were able to selectively form a [Pt(L)4]2+ "open-cage" complex. When this was treated with Pd(ii) ions the cage C assembled. 1H and DOSY nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESIMS) data were consistent with the quantitative formation of the cage and the heterobimetallic structure was confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The cage C was shown to bind anionic guest molecules. NMR studies suggested that these guests interacted with the cavity of the cage in a specific orientation and this was confirmed for the mesylate ion (MsO-) : C host-guest adduct using X-ray crystallography. In addition, the system was shown to be stimulus-responsive and could be opened and closed on demand when treated with appropriate stimuli. If a guest molecule was bound within the cage, the opening and closing was accompanied by the release and re-uptake of the guest molecule.

Synthesis of an Adaptable Molecular Barrel and Guest Mediated Stabilization of Its Metastable Higher Homologue

Structural and functional modulation of three-dimensional artificial macromolecular systems is of immense importance. Designing supramolecular cages that can show stimuli mediated reversible switching between higher-order structures is quite challenging. We report here construction of a Pd₆ trifacial barrel (1) by coordination self-assembly. Surprisingly, barrel 1 was found to exhibit guest-responsive behavior. In presence of fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀, 1 unprecedentedly transformed to its metastable higher homologue Pd₈ tetrafacial barrel (2), forming stable host-guest complexes (C₆₀)₃⊂2 and (C₇₀)₂⊂2, respectively. Again, encapsulated fullerenes could be extracted from the cavity of 2 using 1,2-dichlorobenzene, leading to its facile conversion to the parent trifacial barrel 1. Such reversible structural interconversion between an adaptable molecular barrel and its guest stabilized higher homologue is an uncommon observation.

Anionic Templates Drive Conversion between a ZnII9L6 Tricapped Trigonal Prism and ZnII6L4 Pseudo-Octahedra

This work introduces the use of 8-aminoquinoline subcomponents to generate complex three-dimensional structures. Together with a tris(formylpyridine), 8-aminoquinoline condensed around Zn^II templates to produce a tris(tridentate) ligand. This ligand is incorporated into either a tricapped trigonal prismatic Zn^II₉L₆ structure or a pair of pseudo-octahedral Zn^II₆L₄ diastereomers, with S₄ and D₂ symmetries. Introduction of a methyl group onto the aminoquinoline modulated the coordination sphere of Zn^II, which favored the Zn^II₉L₆ structure and disfavored the Zn^II₆L₄ assembly. The tricapped trigonal prismatic Zn^II₉L₆ architecture converted into a single Zn^II₆L₄ cage diastereomer following the addition of a dianionic 4,4'-dinitrostilbene-2,2'-disulfonate guest. Four of these guests clustered tightly at the four windows of the Zn^II₆L₄ cage, held in place through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding, stabilize a single diastereomeric configuration with S₄ symmetry.

Tailor-Made Pdn L2n Metal-Organic Cages through Covalent Post-Synthetic Modification

Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is an effective approach for the tailored functionalization of metal-organic architectures, but its generalizability remains challenging. Herein we report a general covalent PSM strategy to functionalize Pd_n L_2n metal-organic cages (MOCs, n=2, 12) through an efficient Diels-Alder cycloaddition between peripheral anthracene substituents and various functional motifs bearing a maleimide group. As expected, the solubility of functionalized Pd₁₂ L₂₄ in common solvents can be greatly improved. Interestingly, concentration-dependent circular dichroism and aggregation-induced emission are achieved with chiral binaphthol (BINOL)- and tetraphenylethylene-modified Pd₁₂ L₂₄ , respectively. Furthermore, Pd₁₂ L₂₄ can be introduced with two different functional groups (e.g., chiral BINOL and achiral pyrene) through a step-by-step PSM route to obtain chirality-induced circularly polarized luminescence. Moreover, similar results are readily observed with a smaller Pd₂ L₄ system.

Modular enhancement of circularly polarized luminescence in Pd2A2B2 heteroleptic cages

Metal-mediated assembly allows us to combine an achiral emissive ligand A with different chiral ligands (such as B) in a non-statistical fashion, obtaining Pd₂A₂B₂ heteroleptic cages showing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). By using the 'shape complementary assembly' (SCA) strategy, the cages are exclusively obtained as cis-Pd₂A₂B₂ stereoisomers, as confirmed by NMR, MS and DFT analyses. Their unique chiroptical properties derive from the synergy of all the building blocks. Ligand B imparts the chiral information of its aliphatic backbone, comprising two stereogenic sp³ carbon centres, to the overall structure, causing CD and CPL signal induction for the chromophore on ligand A. The heteroleptic cage shows CPL with a |g_lum| value of 2.5 × 10^-3, which is 3-times higher than that for a progenitor based on aromatic helical building block H, thus opening a rational route towards optimizing the CPL properties of self-assembled nanostructures in a modular way.

Enantioselective fullerene functionalization through stereochemical information transfer from a self-assembled cage

The regioselective functionalization of C₆₀ remains challenging, while the enantioselective functionalization of C₆₀ is difficult to explore due to the need for complex chiral tethers or arduous chromatography. Metal-organic cages have served as masks to effect the regioselective functionalization of C₆₀. However, it is difficult to control the stereochemistry of the resulting fullerene adducts through this method. Here we report a means of defining up to six stereocentres on C₆₀, achieving enantioselective fullerene functionalization. This method involves the use of a metal-organic cage built from a chiral formylpyridine. Fullerenes hosted within the cavity of the cage can be converted into a series of C₆₀ adducts through chemo-, regio- and stereo-selective Diels-Alder reactions with the edges of the cage. The chiral formylpyridine ultimately dictates the stereochemistry of these chiral fullerene adducts without being incorporated into them. Such chiral fullerene adducts may become useful in devices requiring circularly polarized light manipulation.

Controlled Construction of Heteroleptic [Pd2 (LA )2 (LB )(LC )]4+ Cages: A Facile Approach for Site-Selective endo-Functionalization of Supramolecular Cavities

Construction of supramolecular structures with internal functionalities is a promising approach to build enzyme-like cavities. The endo-functionalized [Pd₁₂ L₂₄ ] and [Pd₂ L₄ ] coordination cages represent the most successful systems in this regard. However, these systems mainly contain one type of endo-moiety. We herein provide a solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of [Pd₂ L₄ ] cages. Site-selective introduction of the endo-functional group was achieved through the formation of heteroleptic [Pd₂ (L^A )₂ (L^B )(L^C )] cages. Using two orthogonal steric control elements is the key for the selective formation of the hetero-assemblies. We demonstrated the construction of two hetero-cages with a single internal functional group as well as a hetero-cage with two distinct endohedral functionalities. The endo-functionalized hetero-cages bound sulfonate guests with fast-exchange dynamics. This strategy provides a new solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of supramolecular cavities.

Homochiral Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra with Multiple Kinds of Vertices

Metal-organic polyhedra featuring non-Archimedean/Platonic architectures with multiple kinds of vertices have aroused great attention for their fascinating structures and properties but are yet challenging to achieve. Here, we report a combinatorial strategy to make such nonclassic polyhedral cages by combining kinetically labile metal ions with non-planar organic linkers instead of the usual only inert metal centers and planar ligands. This facilitates the synthesis of an enantiopure twisted tetra(3-pyridyl)-based TADDOL (TADDOL = tetraaryl-1,3-dioxolane-4,5-dimethanol) ligand (L) capable of binding Ni(II) ions to produce a regular convex cage, Ni₆L₈, with two mixed metal/organic vertices and three rarely reported concave cages Ni₁₄L₈, Ni₁₈L₁₂, and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with three or four mixed vertices. Each of the cages has an amphiphilic cavity decorated with chiral dihydroxyl functionalities and packs into a three-dimensional structure. The enantioselective adsorption and separation performances of the cages are strongly dependent on their pore structure features. Particularly, Ni₁₄L₈ and Ni₁₈L₁₂ with wide openings can be solid adsorbents for the adsorptive and solid-phase extractive separation of a variety of racemic spirodiols with up to 98% ee, whereas Ni₆L₈ and Ni₂₄L₁₆ with smaller pore apertures cannot adsorb the racemates. The combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the host-guest adduct and GCMC simulation indicates that the enantiospecific recognition capabilities originate from the well-organized chiral inner sphere as well as multiple interactions within the chiral microenvironment. This work therefore provides an attractive strategy for the rational design of polyhedral cages, showing geometrically fascinating structures with properties different from those of classic assemblies.

An Organic Molecular Nanobarrel that Hosts and Solubilizes C60

Organic cages have gained increasing attention in recent years as molecular hosts and porous materials. Among these, barrel-shaped cages or molecular nanobarrels are promising systems to encapsulate large hosts as they possess windows of the same size as their internal cavity. However, these systems have received little attention and remain practically unexplored despite their potential. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a new trigonal prismatic organic nanobarrel with two large triangular windows with a diameter of 12.7 Å optimal for the encapsulation of C₆₀ . Remarkably, this organic nanobarrel shows a high affinity for C₆₀ in solvents in which C₆₀ is virtually insoluble, providing stable solutions of C₆₀ .

Symmetry-breaking host-guest assembly in a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular system

Bio-inspired self-assembly is invaluable to create well-defined giant structures from small molecular units. Owing to a large entropy loss in the self-assembly process, highly symmetric structures are typically obtained as thermodynamic products while formation of low symmetric assemblies is still challenging. In this study, we report the symmetry-breaking self-assembly of a defined C₁-symmetric supramolecular structure from an O_h-symmetric hydrogen-bonded resorcin[4]arene capsule and C₂-symmetric cationic bis-cyclometalated Ir complexes, carrying sterically demanding tertiary butyl (^tBu) groups, on the basis of synergistic effects of weak binding forces. The flexible capsule framework shows a large structural change upon guest binding to form a distorted resorcin[4]arene hexameric capsule, providing an asymmetric cavity. Location of the chiral guest inside the anisotropic environment leads to modulation of its Electric Dipole (ED) and Magnetic Dipole (MD) transition moments in the excited state, causing an increased emission quantum yield, longer emission lifetime, and enhancement of the dissymmetry factor (g_lum) in the circularly polarized luminescence.

Orientational self-sorting in cuboctahedral Pd cages

Cuboctahedral coordination cages of the general formula [Pd12L24]24+ (L = low-symmetry ligand) were analyzed theoretically and experimentally. With 350 696 potential isomers, the structural space of these assemblies is vast. Orientational self-sorting refers to the preferential formation of particular isomers within the pool of potential structures. Geometric and computational analyses predict the preferred formation of cages with a cis arrangement at the metal centers. This prediction was corroborated experimentally by synthesizing a [Pd12L24]24+ cage with a bridging 3-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)pyridine ligand. A crystallographic analysis of this assembly showed exclusive cis coordination of the 3- and the 4-pyridyl donor groups at the Pd2+ ions.

Guest‐Modulated Circularly Polarized Luminescence by Ligand‐to‐Ligand Chirality Transfer in Heteroleptic Pd II Coordination Cages

Multicomponent metallo‐supramolecular assembly allows the rational combination of different building blocks. Discrete multifunctional hosts with an accessible cavity can be prepared in a non‐statistical fashion. We employ our shape‐complementary assembly (SCA) method to achieve for the first time integrative self‐sorting of heteroleptic Pd^II cages showing guest‐tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). An enantiopure helicene‐based ligand (M or P configuration) is coupled with a non‐chiral emissive fluorenone‐based ligand (A or B) to form a series of Pd₂L₂L′₂ assemblies. The modular strategy allows to impart the chiral information of the helicenes to the overall supramolecular system, resulting in CPL from the non‐chiral component. Guest binding results in a 4‐fold increase of CPL intensity. The principle offers potential to generate libraries of multifunctional materials with applications in molecular recognition, enantioselective photo‐redox catalysis and information processing.

M6L12 Nanospheres with Multiple C70 Binding Sites for 1O2 Formation in Organic and Aqueous Media

Singlet oxygen is a potent oxidant with major applications in organic synthesis and medicinal treatment. An efficient way to produce singlet oxygen is the photochemical generation by fullerenes which exhibit ideal thermal and photochemical stability. In this contribution we describe readily accessible M₆L₁₂ nanospheres with unique binding sites for fullerenes located at the windows of the nanospheres. Up to four C₇₀ can be associated with a single nanosphere, presenting an efficient method for fullerene extraction and application. Depending on the functionality located on the outside of the sphere, they act as vehicles for ¹O₂ generation in organic or in aqueous media using white LED light. Excellent productivity in ¹O₂ generation and consecutive oxidation of ¹O₂ acceptors using C₇₀⊂[Pd₆L₁₂], C₆₀⊂[Pd₆L₁₂] or fullerene soot extract was observed. The methodological design principles allow preparation and application of highly effective multifullerene binding spheres.

Transformation networks of metal-organic cages controlled by chemical stimuli

The flexibility of biomolecules enables them to adapt and transform as a result of signals received from the external environment, expressing different functions in different contexts. In similar fashion, coordination cages can undergo stimuli-triggered transformations owing to the dynamic nature of the metal-ligand bonds that hold them together. Different types of stimuli can trigger dynamic reconfiguration of these metal-organic assemblies, to switch on or off desired functionalities. Such adaptable systems are of interest for applications in switchable catalysis, selective molecular recognition or as transformable materials. This review highlights recent advances in the transformation of cages using chemical stimuli, providing a catalogue of reported strategies to transform cages and thus allow the creation of new architectures. Firstly we focus on strategies for transformation through the introduction of new cage components, which trigger reconstitution of the initial set of components. Secondly we summarize conversions triggered by external stimuli such as guests, concentration, solvent or pH, highlighting the adaptation processes that coordination cages can undergo. Finally, systems capable of responding to multiple stimuli are described. Such systems constitute composite chemical networks with the potential for more complex behaviour. We aim to offer new perspectives on how to design transformation networks, in order to shed light on signal-driven transformation processes that lead to the preparation of new functional metal-organic architectures.

Gram-scale synthesis of a covalent nanocage that preserves the redox properties of encapsulated fullerenes

Discrete nanocages provide a way to solubilize, separate, and tune the properties of fullerenes, but these 3D receptors cannot usually be synthesized easily from inexpensive starting materials, limiting their utility. Herein, we describe the first fullerene-binding nanocage (Cage⁴⁺) that can be made efficiently on a gram scale. Cage⁴⁺ was prepared in up to 57% yield by the formation of pyridinium linkages between complemantary porphyrin components that are themselves readily accessible. Cage⁴⁺ binds C₆₀ and C₇₀ with large association constants (>10⁸ M⁻¹), thereby solubilizing these fullerenes in polar solvents. Fullerene association and redox-properties were subsequently investigated across multiple charge states of the host-guest complexes. Remarkably, neutral and singly reduced fullerenes bind with similar strengths, leaving their 0/1⁻ redox couples minimally perturbed and fully reversible, whereas other hosts substantially alter the redox properties of fullerenes. Thus, C₆₀@Cage⁴⁺ and C₇₀@Cage⁴⁺ may be useful as solubilized fullerene derivatives that preserve the inherent electron-accepting and electron-transfer capabilities of the fullerenes. Fulleride dianions were also found to bind strongly in Cage⁴⁺, while further reduction is centered on the host, leading to lowered association of the fulleride guest in the case of C₆₀²⁻.

This report describes the first gram-scale synthesis of a nanocage that can host fullerenes (C₆₀ and C₇₀). The redox properties of the fullerenes are preserved in this host, enabling characterization of complexes with fulleride anions and dianions.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as ‘glue’ to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

A Catalogue of Orthogonal Complementary Ligand Pairings for Palladium(II) Complexes

Molecular recognition is a form of information transfer, seen in the base pairing in DNA which is derived from the identity (acceptor or donor) and number of hydrogen bond sites within each base. Here we report bis‐ligand palladium(II) complexes that exhibit similar complementarity. Pd(II) has square planar four‐coordinate geometry, giving control over ligand orientation and denticity. Pairings were developed using ligand denticity (3 : 1 or 2 : 2), and hydrogen bond capability (AA:DD or AD:DA) or lack thereof. Five pairings were investigated, with two sets of four being found fully orthogonal. The two 3 : 1 pairings exhibited limited ligand exchange. The extent of this exchange varied dependant on solvent from 2 : 1 (desired to undesired) to 6 : 1. A reliable and varied set of ligand pairs have therefore been developed for bis‐ligand coordination sphere engineering in pursuit of sorting for complex molecular architectures and molecular‐level information storage and transfer events.

Tetratopic Terpyridine Building Unit as a Precursor to Wheel-Like Metallo-Supramolecules

In an effort to construct molecules with distinct shapes and functions, the design and synthesis of multitopic ligands are often able to play an important role. Here, we report the synthesis of a novel tetratopic organic ligand LA, which can be viewed as a bis-tenon with successive angular orientations in space. The particular ligand has been treated with different tailored metal-organic ligands to afford new members of the molecular wheel family (multi-rhomboidal-shaped wheel and bis-trapezium-shaped wheel) that show enhanced stability. Two-dimensional (2D) diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (DOSY), electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, traveling wave ion mobility (TWIM), and gradient tandem mass spectrometry (gMS₂) experiments, as well as molecular modeling, have been employed to provide structural information and differentiate the isomeric separation process. In addition, considering that LA has rotational properties, it is expected to open the door to functional supramolecules and stimuli-responsive materials.

Free-standing homochiral 2D monolayers by exfoliation of molecular crystals

Two-dimensional materials with monolayer thickness and extreme aspect ratios are sought for their high surface areas and unusual physicochemical properties¹. Liquid exfoliation is a straightforward and scalable means of accessing such materials², but has been restricted to sheets maintained by strong covalent, coordination or ionic interactions^3-10. The exfoliation of molecular crystals, in which repeat units are held together by weak non-covalent bonding, could generate a greatly expanded range of two-dimensional crystalline materials with diverse surfaces and structural features. However, at first sight, these weak forces would seem incapable of supporting such intrinsically fragile morphologies. Against this expectation, we show here that crystals composed of discrete supramolecular coordination complexes can be exfoliated by sonication to give free-standing monolayers approximately 2.3 nanometres thick with aspect ratios up to approximately 2,500:1, sustained purely by apolar intermolecular interactions. These nanosheets are characterized by atomic force microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, confirming their crystallinity. The monolayers possess complex chiral surfaces derived partly from individual supramolecular coordination complex components but also from interactions with neighbours. In this respect, they represent a distinct type of material in which molecular components are all equally exposed to their environment, as if in solution, yet with properties arising from cooperation between molecules, because of crystallinity. This unusual nature is reflected in the molecular recognition properties of the materials, which bind carbohydrates with strongly enhanced enantiodiscrimination relative to individual molecules or bulk three-dimensional crystals.

Nonaqueous Emulsion Polycondensation Enabled by a Self‐Assembled Cage‐like Surfactant

Nonaqueous emulsions are crucial for a range of applications based on water‐sensitive systems such as controlled polymerizations requiring anhydrous reaction conditions and the stabilization of readily hydrolyzable reagents or pharmacologically active components. However, defined molecular surfactants to stabilize such nonaqueous emulsions are scarce. We introduce a self‐assembled coordination cage, decorated with cholesterol functionalities, to serve as a molecular surfactant for various oil‐in‐oil emulsions of immiscible organic solvents. While the positively charged cage forms the amphiphile's polar moiety, the non‐polar cholesterol appendices can bend in a common direction to stabilize the emulsion. Templated by the droplets, polycondensation reactions were carried out to produce microstructured polyurethane and polyurea materials of different particle sizes and morphologies. Further, the amphiphilic cage can encapsulate a guest molecule and the resulting host‐guest assembly was also examined as a surfactant. In addition, the aggregation behavior of the amphiphilic cage in an aqueous medium was examined.

Heteroleptic tripalladium(II) cages

There is a concerted attempt to develop self-assembled metallo-cages of greater structural complexity, and heteroleptic Pd II cages are emerging as prime candidates in these efforts. Most of these are dinuclear: few examples of higher nuclearity have been reported. We demonstrate here a robust method for the formation of tripalladium(II) cages from the 2:3:3 combination of a tritopic ligand, Pd II , and a selection of ditopic ligands of the correct size and geometry.

Cooperativity of steric bulk and H-bonding in coordination sphere engineering: heteroleptic PdII cages and bowls by design

Recently developed self-assembly strategies allow to rationally reduce the symmetry of metallosupramolecular architectures. In addition, the combination of multiple ligand types without creating compound mixtures has become possible. Among several approaches to realize non-statistical heteroleptic assembly, Coordination Sphere Engineering (CSE) makes use of secondary repulsive or attractive interactions in direct vicinity of the metal nodes. Previously, we used steric congestion to turn dinuclear [Pd₂L₄] cages with fourfold symmetry into [Pd₂L₃X₂] (X = solvent, halide) bowl structures. Here, we introduce a new subtype of this strategy based on balancing hydrogen bonding and repulsive interactions between ligands carrying quinoline (L^Qu) and 1,8-naphthyridine (L^Na) donors to generate trans-[Pd₂L₂] and [Pd₂L₃L′] cages, assisted by templation of encapsulated fullerenes. Combined with steric congestion caused by acridine (L^Ac) donors, we further report the first example of a heteroleptic [Pd₂L₂L′X₂] bowl. Formation, structure and fullerene binding ability of these metallo-supramolecular hosts were studied by NMR, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Coordination Sphere Engineering (CSE) allows non-statistical assembly of heteroleptic supramolecular architectures by fine adjustment of steric and electronic features around square-planar Pd(ii) cations with naphthyridine donors.

Molecular engineering of confined space in metal–organic cages

The host–guest chemistry of metal–organic cages can be modified through tailoring of structural aspects such as size, shape and functionality. In this review, strategies, opportunities and challenges of such molecular engineering are discussed.

Entropy directs the self-assembly of supramolecular palladium coordination macrocycles and cages

The self-assembly of palladium-based cages is frequently rationalized via the cumulative enthalpy (ΔH) of bonds between coordination nodes (M, i.e., Pd) and ligand (L) components. This focus on enthalpic rationale limits the complete understanding of the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for self-assembly, as entropic (ΔS) contributions are overlooked. Here, we present a study of the M₂^linL₃ intermediate species (M = dinitrato(N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine)palladium(ii), ^linL = 4,4′-bipyridine), formed during the synthesis of triangle-shaped (M₃^linL₃) and square-shaped (M₄^linL₄) coordination macrocycles. Thermochemical analyses by variable temperature (VT) ¹H-NMR revealed that the M₂^linL₃ intermediate exhibited an unfavorable (relative) ΔS compared to M₃^linL₃ (triangle, ΔTΔS = +5.22 kcal mol⁻¹) or M₄^linL₄ (square, ΔTΔS = +2.37 kcal mol⁻¹) macrocycles. Further analysis of these constructs with molecular dynamics (MD) identified that the self-assembly process is driven by ΔG losses facilitated by increases in solvation entropy (ΔS_solv, i.e., depletion of solvent accessible surface area) that drives the self-assembly from “open” intermediates toward “closed” macrocyclic products. Expansion of our computational approach to the analysis of self-assembly in Pd_n^benL_2n cages (^benL = 4,4'-(5-ethoxy-1,3-phenylene)dipyridine), demonstrated that ΔS_solv contributions drive the self-assembly of both thermodynamic cage products (i.e., Pd₁₂^benL₂₄) and kinetically-trapped intermediates (i.e., Pd₈^cL₁₆).

These studies demonstrate that ΔS drives the self-assembly of supramolecular palladium-based coordination macrocycles and cages. As this ΔS contribution arises from solvation, these findings broadly reflect the thermodynamic drive of self-assembly to form compact structures.

Subphthalocyanine capsules: molecular reactors for photoredox transformations of fullerenes

The internal cavity formed by a dimeric subphthalocyanine (SubPc) capsule (SubPc₂Pd₃, 2), ensembled by coordination of pyridyl substituents in the monomeric SubPc 1 to Pd centers, has proved an optimal space for the complexation of C₆₀ fullerene. Taking advantage of the intense absorption of green light of the SubPc component at around 550 nm, we have tested different green-light induced photoredox addition reactions over the double bonds of guest C₆₀. Both addition of amine radicals, generated by reductive quenching of the excited state of 2 by aromatic trimethylsilylamines, and addition of trifluoroethyl radicals, obtained from oxidative quenching of the photosensitizer, have successfully taken place with good yields in the 2:C₆₀ host:guest complex. On the other hand, both the photoredox reactions result in much lower yields when the monomeric pyridyl-SubPc is used as a photocatalyst, demonstrating that encapsulation results in a strong acceleration of the reaction. Importantly, this is the first example of the use of a confined microenvironment to trigger photoredox chemical transformations of fullerenes.

A photoredox cage built by coordination of two pyridyl-subphthalocyanines to Pd centers has proved versatile and efficient to catalyze photoredox addition reactions over encapsulated C₆₀.

A Conjugated Figure-of-Eight Oligoparaphenylene Nanohoop with Adaptive Cavities Derived from Cyclooctatetrathiophene Core

A fully conjugated figure-of-eight nanohoop is presented with facile synthesis. The molecule's lemniscular skeleton features the combination of two strained oligoparaphenylene loops and a flexible cyclooctatetrathiophene core. Its rigid yet guest-adaptive cavities enable the formation of the peanut-like 1:2 host-guest complexes with C₆₀ or C₇₀ , which have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography and characterized in solution. Further computational studies suggest notable geometric variations and non-covalent interactions of the cavities upon binding with different fullerenes, as well as overall conjugation comparable to cycloparaphenylenes.

Artificial Metal-Peptide Assemblies: Bioinspired Assembly of Peptides and Metals through Space and across Length Scales

The exploration of chiral crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic complexes (MOCs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has been one of the most exciting recent developments in materials science owing to their widespread applications in enantiospecific processes. However, achieving specific tight-affinity binding and remarkable enantioselectivity toward important biomolecules is still challenging. Perhaps most critically, the lack of adaptability, compatibility, and processability in these materials severely impedes practical applications in chemical engineering and biological technology. In this Perspective, artificial metal-peptide assemblies (MPAs), which are achieved by the assembly of peptides and metals with nanometer-sized cavities or pores, is a new development that could address the current bottlenecks of chiral porous materials. Bioinspired assembly of pore-forming MPAs is not foreign to biological systems and has granted scientists an unprecedented level of control over the chiral recognition sites, conformational flexibility, cavity sizes, and hydrophilic segments through ultrafine-tuning of peptide-derived linkers. We will specifically discuss exemplary MPAs including structurally well-defined metal-peptide complexes and highly crystalline metal-peptide frameworks. With insights from these structures, the peptide assembly and folding by the closer cooperation of metal coordination and noncovalent interactions can create adaptable protein-like nanocavities undergoing a myriad of conformational variations that is reminiscent of enzymatic pockets. We also consider challenges to advancing the field, where the deployment of side-chain groups and manipulation of amino acid sequences are more likely to access the programmable, genetically encodable peptide-mediated porous materials, thus contributing to the enhanced enantioselective recognition as well as enabling key biochemical processes in next-generation versatile biomimetic materials.
