Understanding Gas Storage in Cuboctahedral Porous Coordination Cages

Solvent-free mechanochemistry for the preparation of mixed-ligand cuboctahedral porous coordination cages

This study investigates post-synthetic ligand exchange in a series of copper(II) and chromium(II) cuboctahedral cages of the formula M24(R-bdc)24 through solvent-free mechanochemistry for the preparation of mixed-ligand cages. While solvent-based ligand exchange does not proceed when the cages are insoluble or when they are dissolved in non-coordinating solvents, solvent-free mechanochemistry can be used to prepare a number of mixed-ligand cages featuring a variety of functional groups regardless of cage solubility. We further extend this strategy to intercage ligand exchange reactions where the solid-state reaction of cages proceeds in just ten minutes while corresponding solvent-based reactions require more than one week of reaction time. The results highlight mechanochemically-facilitated ligand exchange as an exceptionally facile and efficient method for the production of mixed-ligand cuboctahedral cages.

Designing External Pores of Aluminum Oxo Polyhedrons for Efficient Iodine Capture

Although metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) expansion has been studied to date, it is still a rare occurrence for their porous intermolecular assembly for iodine capture. The major limitation is the lack of programmable and controllable methods for effectively constructing and utilizing the exterior cavities. Herein, the goal of programmable porous intermolecular assembly is realized in the first family of aluminum oxo polyhedrons (AlOPs) using ligands with directional H-bonding donor/acceptor pairs and auxiliary alcohols as structural regulation sites. The approach has the advantage of avoiding the use of expensive edge-directed ditopic and face-directed tritopic ligands in the general synthesis strategy of MOPs. Combining theoretical calculations and experiments, the intrinsic relationship is revealed between alcohol ligands and the growth mechanism of AlOPs. The maximum I2 uptake based on the mass gain during sorption corresponds to 2.35 g g-1, representing the highest reported I2 sorption by an MOP. In addition, it can be easily regenerated and maintained the iodine sorption capacity, revealing its further potential application. This method of constructing stable and programmable porous materials will provide a new way to solve problems such as radionuclide capture.

Unlocking High Porosity: Post-Synthetic Solvothermal Treatment of Cu-Paddlewheel Based Metal-Organic Cages

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique discrete structures, intrinsic porosity, designability, and tailorability. However, weak inter-cage interactions, such as van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding can cause solid-state MOCs to lose structural integrity during desolvation, leading to the loss of porosity. In this work, a novel strategy to retain the permanent porosity of Cu-paddlewheel-based MOCs, enabling their use as heterogeneous catalysts is presented. Post-synthetic solvothermal treatments in non-coordinating solvents, mesitylene, and p-xylene, effectively preserve the packing structures of solvent-evacuated MOCs while preventing cage agglomeration. The resulting MOCs exhibit an exceptional N2 sorption capacity, with a high surface area (SBET = 1934 m2 g-1 for MOP-23), which is among the highest reported for porous MOCs. Intriguingly, while the solvothermal treatment reduced Cu(II) to Cu(I) in the Cu-paddlewheel clusters, the MOCs with mixed-valenced Cu(I)/Cu(II) maintained their crystallinity and permanent porosity. The catalytic activities of these MOCs are successfully examined in copper(I)-catalyzed hydrative amide synthesis, highlighting the prospect of MOCs as versatile reaction platforms.

Statistical Distribution of Binary Ligands within Rhodium-Organic Octahedra Tunes Microporosity in Their Assemblies

Structure-porosity relationships for metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) are hardly investigated because they tend to be amorphized after activation, which inhibits crystallographic characterization. Here, we show a mixed-ligand strategy to statistically distribute two distinct carbazole-type ligands within rhodium-based octahedral MOPs, leading to systematic tuning of the microporosity in the resulting amorphous solids.

Redox-Active Ruthenium-Organic Polyhedra with Tunable Surface Functionality and Porosities

Dinuclear ruthenium paddlewheel complexes exhibit high structural stability in redox reactions. The use of these chemical motifs for the construction of Ru-based metal-organic polyhedra (RuMOPs) provides a route for redox-active porous materials. However, there are few studies on the synthesis and characterization of RuMOPs due to the difficulty in controlling the assembly process via the ligand-exchange reaction of equatorial acetates of the diruthenium tetraacetate precursors with dicarboxylic acid ligands. In this study, we synthesized three novel cuboctahedral RuMOPs based on the Ru2(II/III)-paddlewheel units with different alkyl functionalizations on the benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate moieties. We evaluated the effect of external functionalization on the molecular packing and the porous and redox properties. The electrochemical measurements revealed the multielectron transferred redox process where the electron-donating/-withdrawing nature of the functional groups allows the control of the redox behavior.

Integrated Anionic Zirconium-Organic Cage and Cationic Boron-Imidazolate Cage for Synergetic Optical Limiting

Making oppositely charged metal-organic cages (MOCs) into a tightly ordered structure may bring interesting functions. Herein, we report a novel structure composed of anionic (Zr4 L6 )8- (L=embonate) tetrahedral cages and in situ-formed cationic [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ (Bim=[BH(im)3 ]- ; im=imidazole) cubic cages. Chiral transfer is observed from enantiopure (Zr4 L6 )8- cage to enantiopure [Zn4 (Bim)4 ]4+ cage. A pair of enantiomers (PTC-373(Δ) and PTC-373(Λ)) are formed. PTC-373 exhibits high chemical and thermal stabilities, affording an interesting single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. More importantly, the combination of ionic pair cages significantly enhances its third-order nonlinear optical property, and its thin-film exhibits an excellent optical limiting effect.

Imparting structural robustness of metal-organic cages based on oxo-dimolybdenum clusters

A family of robust and stable molybdenum-based metal-organic cages have been obtained based on the [Mo2O2(μ2-O)2]2+ secondary building unit. The resulting cages are decorated with different pyrdine derivatives that impart structural stability, resulting in the structural elucidation of the activated cage with single-crystal diffraction. The chemical robustness of the cage is also demonstrated by the post-synthetic modification of the cage, which allows the exchange of the pyridine derivatives without rupture of the cage.

Hydrogen Adsorption in Ultramicroporous Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring Silent Open Metal Sites

In this study, we utilized an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework (MOF) named [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2(H2O)4]·2.18H2O (where H3pzdc represents pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid and ade represents adenine) for hydrogen (H2) adsorption. Upon activation, [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2] was obtained, and in situ carbon monoxide loading by transmission infrared spectroscopy revealed the generation of open Ni(II) sites. The MOF displayed a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 160 m2/g and a pore size of 0.67 nm. Hydrogen adsorption measurements conducted on this MOF at 77 K showed a steep increase in uptake (up to 1.93 mmol/g at 0.04 bar) at low pressure, reaching a H2 uptake saturation at 2.11 mmol/g at ∼0.15 bar. The affinity of this MOF for H2 was determined to be 9.7 ± 1.0 kJ/mol. In situ H2 loading experiments supported by molecular simulations confirmed that H2 does not bind to the open Ni(II) sites of [Ni3(pzdc)2(ade)2], and the high affinity of the MOF for H2 is attributed to the interplay of pore size, shape, and functionality.

Dynamic Metallosupramolecular Cages Containing 12 Adaptable Pockets for High-Order Guest Binding Beyond Biomimicry

Molecular recognition lies at the heart of biological functions, which inspires lasting research in artificial host syntheses to mimic biomolecules that can recognize, process, and transport molecules with the highest level of complexity; nonetheless, the design principle and quantifying methodology of artificial hosts for multiple guests (≥4) remain a formidable task. Herein, we report two rhombic dodecahedral cages [(Zn/Fe)8Pd6-MOC-16], which embrace 12 adaptive pockets for multiguest binding with distinct conformational dynamics inherent in metal-center lability and are able to capture 4-24 guests to manifest a surprising complexity of binding scenarios. The exceptional high-order and hierarchical encapsulation phenomena suggest a wide host-guest dynamic-fit, enabling conformational adjustment and adaptation beyond the duality of induced-fit and conformational selection in protein interactions. A critical inspection of the host-guest binding events in solution has been performed by NMR and ESI-MS spectra, highlighting the importance of acquiring a reliable binding repertoire from different techniques and the uncertainty of quantifying the binding affinities of multiplying guests by an oversimplified method.

Porous supramolecular gels produced by reversible self-gelation of ruthenium-based metal-organic polyhedra

Supramolecular gels based on metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) represent a versatile platform to access processable soft materials with controlled porosity. Herein, we report a self-gelation approach that allows the reversible assembly of a novel Ru-based MOP in the form of colloidal gels. The presence of cationic mixed-valence [Ru2(COO)4]+ paddlewheel units allows for modification of the MOP charge via acid/base treatment, and therefore, its solubility. This feature enables control over supramolecular interactions, making it possible to reversibly force MOP aggregation to form nanoparticles, which further assemble to form a colloidal gel network. The gelation process was thoroughly investigated by time-resolved ζ-potential, pH, and dynamic light scattering measurements. This strategy leads to the evolution of hierarchically porous aerogel from individual MOP molecules without using any additional component. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the simplicity of this method can be exploited for the obtention of MOP-based gels through a one-pot synthetic approach starting from MOP precursors.

Organic ligands regulate the environmental impacts of metal-organic frameworks on nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are rapidly developed materials with fantastic properties and wide applications. The increasing studies highlighted the potential threats of MOF materials to the environment. Comparing to the limited species of metal elements, the organic ligands have much higher diversity, but the influence of organic ligands on the environmental impacts of MOFs has not been revealed. Herein, we synthesized three Cu-MOFs with different organic ligands, namely Cu-BDC (1,4-terephthalic acid), Cu-IM (imidazole) and Cu-TATB (2,4,6-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)- 1,3,5-triazine), and evaluated their environmental toxicity to the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii. Cu-BDC inhibited the bacterial growth at lower concentrations than Cu-IM and Cu-TATB. The transcriptomes suggested the changes of membrane components by Cu-MOFs, consistent with the membrane leakage and cell wall damages. Cu-MOFs inhibited the nitrogen fixation activity through energy metabolism disturbance according to Gene Ontology functional annotation of ATP binding, Ca²⁺Mg²⁺-ATPase activity and ATP content. Only Cu-IM lowered the nitrogen fixation related nif genes, and affected the ribosome, purine metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation pathways. Otherwise, Cu-BDC and Cu-TATB mainly affected the flagellar assemblies and bacterial chemotaxis pathways. Our results collectively indicated that organic ligands regulated the environmental toxicity of MOFs through different metabolism pathways.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gas Applications

Using petrol to supply energy for a car or burning coal to heat a building generates plenty of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂ ), water vapor (H₂ O), methane (CH₄ ), nitrous oxide (N₂ O), ozone (O₃ ), fluorinated gases. These up-and-coming metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally endowed with rigid inorganic nodes and versatile organic linkers, which have been extensively used in the GHG-related applications to improve the lives and protect the environment. Porous MOF materials and their derivatives have been demonstrated to be competitive and promising candidates for GHG separation, storage and conversions as they shows facile preparation, large porosity, adjustable nanostructure, abundant topology, and tunable physicochemical property. Enormous progress has been made in GHG storage and separation intrinsically stemmed from the different interaction between guest molecule and host framework from MOF itself in the recent five years. Meanwhile, the use of porous MOF materials to transform GHG and the influence of external conditions on the adsorption performance of MOFs for GHG are also enclosed. In this review, it is also highlighted that the existing challenges and future directions are discussed and envisioned in the rational design, facile synthesis and comprehensive utilization of MOFs and their derivatives for practical applications.

Metal Organic Polygons and Polyhedra: Instabilities and Remedies

The field of coordination chemistry has undergone rapid transformation from preparation of monometallic complexes to multimetallic complexes. So far numerous multimetallic coordination complexes have been synthesized. Multimetallic coordination complexes with well-defined architectures are often called as metal organic polygons and polyhedra (MOPs). In recent past, MOPs have received tremendous attention due to their potential applicability in various emerging fields. However, the field of coordination chemistry of MOPs often suffer set back due to the instability of coordination complexes particularly in aqueous environment-mostly by aqueous solvent and atmospheric moisture. Accordingly, the fate of the field does not rely only on the water solubilities of newly synthesized MOPs but very much dependent on their stabilities both in solution and solid state. The present review discusses several methodologies to prepare MOPs and investigates their stabilities under various circumstances. Considering the potential applicability of MOPs in sustainable way, several methodologies (remedies) to enhance the stabilities of MOPs are discussed here.

Anion Binding as a Strategy for the Synthesis of Porous Salts

Porous salts have recently emerged as a promising new class of ultratunable permanently microporous solids. These adsorbents, which were first reported as ionic solids based on porous cations and anions, can be isolated from a wide variety of charged, permanently porous coordination cages. A challenge in realizing the full tunability of such systems, however, lies in the fact that the majority of coordination cages for which surface areas have been reported are comprised of charge-balanced inorganic and organic building blocks that result in neutral cages. As such, most reported permanently porous coordination cages cannot be used as reagents in the synthesis of porous salts. Here, we show that the facile reaction of TBAX (TBA⁺ = tetra-n-butylammonium; X = F^- and Cl^-) with molybdenum paddlewheel-based coordination cages of the M₄L₄ and M₂₄L₂₄ lantern and cuboctahedra structure types, respectively, affords charged cages by virtue of coordination of halide anions to the internal and/or external metal sites on these structures, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. At a practical level, the TBAX/cage reactions, which are fully reversible upon isolation of the cage with the appropriate solvent, solubilize otherwise rigorously insoluble cages. This method significantly increases the solution processability of these highly porous solids. Toward the formation of new porous salts, halide binding also serves to incorporate charge on neutral cages and make them amenable to simple salt metathesis reactions to afford new porous salts based on anions and cations with intrinsic porosity. A combination of diffraction methods and a suite of spectroscopic tools confirms speciation of the isolated solids, which represent a new class of highly tunable porous salts. Ultimately, this work represents a roadmap for the preparation of new porous solids and showcases the utility and broad applicability of anion binding as a strategy for the synthesis of porous salts.

Significantly lowered activation energy in proton conductor by Mg substitution in a layered Ni metal-organic framework

Designs and developments of proton conductors are highly important in chemistry and energy fields. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework H₂DAB-MgNi(ox)₃ was synthesized. X-ray powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray mapping measurements demonstrated that the H₂DAB-MgNi(ox)₃ had a solid-solution structure, with the homogeneous distribution of Mg and Ni elements. The proton conductivity of H₂DAB-MgNi(ox)₃ was enhanced from that of H₂DAB-Ni₂(ox)₃ at 95% relative humidity by Mg substitution.

Permanent Porosity in Hydroxamate Titanium-Organic Polyhedra

Following the synthesis of hydroxamate titanium-organic frameworks, we now extend these siderophore-type linkers to the assembly of the first titanium-organic polyhedra displaying permanent porosity. Mixed-linker versions of this molecular cage (cMUV-11) are also used to demonstrate the effect of pore chemistry in accessing high surface areas of near 1200 m²·g^-1.

Artificial Metal-Peptide Assemblies: Bioinspired Assembly of Peptides and Metals through Space and across Length Scales

The exploration of chiral crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic complexes (MOCs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has been one of the most exciting recent developments in materials science owing to their widespread applications in enantiospecific processes. However, achieving specific tight-affinity binding and remarkable enantioselectivity toward important biomolecules is still challenging. Perhaps most critically, the lack of adaptability, compatibility, and processability in these materials severely impedes practical applications in chemical engineering and biological technology. In this Perspective, artificial metal-peptide assemblies (MPAs), which are achieved by the assembly of peptides and metals with nanometer-sized cavities or pores, is a new development that could address the current bottlenecks of chiral porous materials. Bioinspired assembly of pore-forming MPAs is not foreign to biological systems and has granted scientists an unprecedented level of control over the chiral recognition sites, conformational flexibility, cavity sizes, and hydrophilic segments through ultrafine-tuning of peptide-derived linkers. We will specifically discuss exemplary MPAs including structurally well-defined metal-peptide complexes and highly crystalline metal-peptide frameworks. With insights from these structures, the peptide assembly and folding by the closer cooperation of metal coordination and noncovalent interactions can create adaptable protein-like nanocavities undergoing a myriad of conformational variations that is reminiscent of enzymatic pockets. We also consider challenges to advancing the field, where the deployment of side-chain groups and manipulation of amino acid sequences are more likely to access the programmable, genetically encodable peptide-mediated porous materials, thus contributing to the enhanced enantioselective recognition as well as enabling key biochemical processes in next-generation versatile biomimetic materials.

Trimetallic coordination cage formation for nitrate encapsulation: transformation of kinetic products into thermodynamic products

A procedure for the formation of a nitrate-encapsulating tripalladium(II) cage via self-assembly of Pd(NO₃)₂ with 1,3-bis(dimethyl(pyridin-4-yl)silyl)propane (L) was developed. The self-assembly reaction initially produces spiro-type macrocycles, PdL₂, and finally results in transformation into a nitrate-encapsulated cage, [(NO₃)@Pd₃L₆], in the mother liquor. The reaction of PdX₂ (X^- = BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, PF₆^-, and CF₃SO₃^- instead of NO₃^-) with L gives rise to a spiro species, PdL₂, as the final product, and anion exchange of the spiro products, [PdL₂](X)₂, with NO₃^- produces the tripalladium cage [(NO₃)@Pd₃L₆].

High Loading of Air-Sensitive Guest Molecules into Polycrystalline Metal-Organic Framework Hosts

Loading air-sensitive guest molecules inside polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) hosts is currently a challenging process. In this study, the air-sensitive guest molecule magnesocene (MgCp₂) was loaded into two porous MOF hosts, polycrystalline Ni-MOF-74 and NH₂-MIL-101(Al), using a gas-phase infiltration process. X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray mapping measurements demonstrated that MgCp₂ was successfully loaded inside the three-dimensional pores of NH₂-MIL-101(Al) with a maximum loading of 43.1 wt %. MgCp₂ was found to cover the outside of Ni-MOF-74 owing to the small one-dimensional channels.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of anthraquinone-based metal-organic cages for photocatalytic selective [2 + 2] cycloaddition

Visible-light-promoted [2 + 2] cycloaddition provides a straightforward and efficient way to produce cyclobutanes, which are the core skeleton in commercial pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. However, the control of the conformation to produce syn-head-to-head (syn-HH) cyclobutanes remains a grand challenge. In this work, we report the design and synthesis of anthraquinone-based metal-organic cages (MOCs) for the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of chalcones to generate syn-HH cyclobutanes. Guided by the coordination-driven self-assembly strategy, one D2 and three D4h symmetric MOCs are constructed from anthraquinone-derived dicarboxylate linkers and 4-tert-butylsulfonylcalixarene capped tetrametallic clusters. The porous cages feature large hydrophobic cavities and photoactive anthraquinone units and are demonstrated to be efficient and recyclable photocatalysts for [2 + 2] cycloaddition of chalcones. The syn-HH diastereomers are obtained with up to 13 : 1 diastereomeric ratio (dr). The cage catalysts provide a well-defined confined space to accommodate the substrates, thus leading to enhanced selectivity relative to the free anthraquinone catalyst.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of a series of dinuclear M2L2 mesocates with a bis-bidentate pyridylimine ligand

Four isostructural dinuclear M2L2 mesocates of the general formula [M2(NCS)4(L)2]·4.5MeOH (1M; M = Mn, Fe, Co, Zn) were constructed by using the coordination-driven self-assembly of the [M(NCS)2] precursor and the flexible bis-bidentate pyridylimine Schiff base ligand L (L = 4,4'-(1,4-phenylenebis(oxy))bis(N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)aniline). The centrosymmetric M2L2 mesocate forms through the side-by-side coordination of two L ligands to a pair of M(ii) ions. The mesocates exhibit a reversible temperature induced desolvation-solvation behavior without losing their structural integrity. The activated 1Co, as the representative M2L2 mesocate, shows an exceptionally high MeOH vapour uptake capacity of 481.9 cm3 g-1 (68.8 wt%) at STP with good recyclability. Notably, it also exhibits CO2 adsorption with an uptake capacity of 20.2 cm3 g-1 (3.6 wt%) at room temperature and 1 bar.

Functional Material Systems Based on Soft Cages

Discrete molecular soft cages integrate multiple functionalities in one molecule. They express their functions from the confined space in their cavity, functional groups in the cavity interior wall and exterior wall, and the chelating nodes in many chelating cages. Such functional integrity render cage molecules special applications in material engineering. Increasing applications of cage molecules in material design have been reported in recent years. Compared with other cavity-rich molecular structures such as metal-organic framework (MOF) or covalent organic frameworks (COF), discrete soft cages present the unique advantage of material design flexibility, that they can easily composite with nanoparticles or polymers and exist in materials of various forms. We document the development of cage-based materials in recent years and expect to further inspire materials engineering to integrate contribution from the functionality specificity of cage molecules and ultimately promote the development of functional materials and thus human life qualities.

Stabilizing Porosity in Organic Cages through Coordination Chemistry

The number of studies concerning the permanent porosity of molecular materials, especially porous organic cages (POCs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs), have increased substantially over the past decade. The work presented here outlines novel approaches to the preparation of porous molecular structures upon metalation of nonporous, amine-based organic cages. Reduction of the well-known CC3 and CC1 imine-based POCs affords nonporous, highly flexible amine cages. These materials can be endowed with significant levels of structural rigidity via post-synthetic metalation of their ethylenediamine-type binding pockets. The hybrid metal-organic cages accessed through this approach combine aspects of POC and PCC chemistry, with structures of this type providing a potentially promising new direction for the design and development of porous molecular materials with tunability in overall charge, metal cation, porosity, and solubility.

Synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of capped paddlewheel porous cages

Although paddlewheel-based structures are common among permanently porous metal-organic materials, suitable strategies for the isolation of metal node-terminated, capped paddlewheel-based cage structures remain limited. We explored the use of chelating dicarboxylate ligand derivates (esp) for the isolation of trimesate-linked cages, Mo12(btc)4(esp)6, that are structural analogs of the small octahedral pore of HKUST-1. The porosity of these novel cages is appreciably higher than that of previously reported structures of this type. We also demonstrate that pillaring the isolated cage with DABCO generated an amorphous polymer that featured exceptional thermal stability and enhanced porosity.

Gas Storage in Porous Molecular Materials

Molecules with permanent porosity in the solid state have been studied for decades. Porosity in these systems is governed by intrinsic pore space, as in cages or macrocycles, and extrinsic void space, created through loose, intermolecular solid-state packing. The development of permanently porous molecular materials, especially cages with organic or metal-organic composition, has seen increased interest over the past decade, and as such, incredibly high surface areas have been reported for these solids. Despite this, examples of these materials being explored for gas storage applications are relatively limited. This minireview outlines existing molecular systems that have been investigated for gas storage and highlights strategies that have been used to understand adsorption mechanisms in porous molecular materials.

Russian-Doll-Like Molecular Cubes

Nanosized cage-within-cage compounds represent a synergistic molecular self-assembling form of three-dimensional architecture that has received particular research focus. Building multilayered ultralarge cages to simulate complicated virus capsids is believed to be a tough synthetic challenge. Here, we synthesize two large double-shell supramolecular cages by facile self-assembly of presynthesized metal-organic hexatopic terpyridine ligands with metal ions. Differing from the mixture of prisms formed from the inner tritopic ligand, the redesigned metal-organic hexatopic ligands bearing high geometric constraints that led to the exclusive formation of discrete double-shell structures. These two unique nested cages are composed of inner cubes (5.1 nm) and outer huge truncated cubes (12.0 and 13.2 nm) with six large bowl-shape subcages distributed on six faces. The results with molecular weights of 75 232 and 77 667 Da were among the largest synthetic cage-in-cage supramolecules reported to date. The composition, size and shape were unambiguously characterized by a combination of ¹H NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, AFM, and SAXS. This work provides an interesting model for functional recognition, delivery, and detection of various guest molecules in the field of supramolecular materials.

Supramolecular Chirality in Metal-Organic Complexes

Chirality is a pervasive structural feature of nature and crucial to the organization and function of nearly all biological systems. At the molecular level, the biased availability of enantiomers in nucleic and amino acids forms the basis for asymmetry. However, chirality expression in natural systems remains complex and intriguing across differing length scales. The translation of chirality toward synthetic systems therefore not only is crucial for fundamental understanding but also may address key challenges in biochemistry and pharmacology. From a structural viewpoint, a fascinating class of cavity-containing supramolecular assemblies, homochiral metal-organic complexes (MOCs), provides a good opportunity to study enantioselective processes. Chiral MOCs are constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly, wherein relatively simple molecular precursors are allowed to assemble into structurally well-defined two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles or 3D metallacages spontaneously with complex and varied functions. These aesthetically appealing structures present nanocavities with space-restricted chiral microenvironments capable of interacting distinctly with molecularly asymmetric guests, which is highly beneficial to explore the relay of chiral information from locally chiral molecules to globally chiral supramolecules, which is a significant challenge.In this Account, we specifically discuss our research toward rationally designed, synthetically accessible chiral MOCs over the past 12 years. The globally supramolecular chirality demonstrated by these well-defined MOCs prominently exceeds the constitutive molecular chirality of the components. First, we discuss chirality transfer and amplification in the context of induction and transmission from the constituent organic ligands of self-assembled chiral metallacycles. The creation of subtly chiral microenvironments in the metallacyclic architectures results from a tiny conformational bias of inner hydrophobic groups, subsequently allowing them to interact very specifically with one enantiomer over the other, thus imparting outstanding enantioseparation properties. Second, we have designed a series of chiral metallacycles and helical metallacages that are able to deploy chiral NH groups with available hydrogen bonding capacity, together with hydrophobic/CH-π interactions, bringing about cooperativity for binding of chiral substrates. It turns out that they can be used as artificial chiral receptors capable of exceptionally high enantiorecognition toward a wide range of biologically relevant molecules. Third, we recently developed a group of highly stable chiral metallacages that feature a catalytically confined nanospace with potential as supramolecular asymmetric catalysts. It has been suggested that the use of molecularly nanocaged chiral hosts in solution to substantially increase reactivity and enantioselectivity compared with the unconfined reactions, highlighting the intermetallic synergy, rationalizes the remarkable catalytic performance. Finally, we discuss our personal perspectives on the promises, opportunities, and key issues toward the future development of chiral MOCs. Needless to say that the fundamental understanding of the translation of chirality from molecular to supramolecular to macroscopic scales is crucial to unveil biological mechanisms. We hope the described supramolecular chirality of MOCs could be extendable to develop new and valuable chiral materials in chemistry, medicine, and beyond.

Proton conductive polyoxoniobate frameworks constructed from nanoscale {Nb68O200} cages

Nanoscale {Nb₆₈O₂₀₀} cages have been successfully employed as flexible and stable secondary building units to combine with bridging copper–amine complexes to construct two proton conductive polyoxoniobate frameworks, demonstrating a promising strategy for making new porous materials.

The rise of metal-organic polyhedra

Metal-organic polyhedra are a member of metal-organic materials, and are together with metal-organic frameworks utilized as emerging porous platforms for numerous applications in energy- and bio-related sciences. However, metal-organic polyhedra have been significantly underexplored, unlike their metal-organic framework counterparts. In this review, we will cover the topologies and the classification of metal-organic polyhedra and share several suggestions, which might be useful to synthetic chemists regarding the future directions in this rapid-growing field.

Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra: Morphology, Porosity, and Guest Binding

Designing porous materials which can selectively adsorb CO₂ or CH₄ is an important environmental and industrial goal which requires an understanding of the host–guest interactions involved at the atomic scale. Metal–organic polyhedra (MOPs) showing permanent porosity upon desolvation are rarely observed. We report a family of MOPs (Cu-1a, Cu-1b, Cu-2), which derive their permanent porosity from cavities between packed cages rather than from within the polyhedra. Thus, for Cu-1a, the void fraction outside the cages totals 56% with only 2% within. The relative stabilities of these MOP structures are rationalized by considering their weak nondirectional packing interactions using Hirshfeld surface analyses. The exceptional stability of Cu-1a enables a detailed structural investigation into the adsorption of CO₂ and CH₄ using in situ X-ray and neutron diffraction, coupled with DFT calculations. The primary binding sites for adsorbed CO₂ and CH₄ in Cu-1a are found to be the open metal sites and pockets defined by the faces of phenyl rings. More importantly, the structural analysis of a hydrated sample of Cu-1a reveals a strong hydrogen bond between the adsorbed CO₂ molecule and the Cu(II)-bound water molecule, shedding light on previous empirical and theoretical observations that partial hydration of metal−organic framework (MOF) materials containing open metal sites increases their uptake of CO₂. The results of the crystallographic study on MOP–gas binding have been rationalized using DFT calculations, yielding individual binding energies for the various pore environments of Cu-1a.

Using Low-Pressure Methane Adsorption Isotherms for Higher-Throughput Screening of Methane Storage Materials

A useful correlation between the low-pressure (up to 1.2 bar), low-temperature (195 K) and high-pressure (up to 65 bar), room temperature (298 K) methane storage properties of a range of porous materials is reported. Methane isotherms under these two sets of conditions show a remarkable agreement in both equilibrium adsorption and deliverable capacities for materials with pore volumes that are less than approximately 0.80 cm³/g. This trend holds well for the suite of metal-organic frameworks and porous coordination cages we studied, in addition to a zeolite and porous organic cage. Although it is well known that gravimetric gas storage capacity trends with gravimetric surface area, the 1.2 bar, 195 K excess adsorption capacity of a given framework is a better indicator of its room temperature, 65 bar capacity. Given the significantly smaller sample quantities needed for low-pressure measurements, greater accessibility to researchers around the world, accuracy of the measurement, and higher throughput, we envision this method as a rapid screening tool for the identification of methane storage materials. As excess/total adsorption and gravimetric/volumetric adsorption can be interconverted by simple utilization of the scalar quantities of pore volume or density, respectively, this method can be easily adapted to obtain both gravimetric and volumetric total adsorption capacities for a given adsorbent. In terms of volumetric methane adsorption, we further investigate the relationship between crystallographic and bulk density for the adsorbents studied here. With this analysis, it becomes apparent that in the absence of novel synthetic approaches, reported volumetric storage capacities should be viewed as an optimistic upper limit for a given material and not necessarily a true reflection of its actual adsorption properties as most MOFs have bulk densities that are less than half of their crystallographic values.

Design and synthesis of aryl-functionalized carbazole-based porous coordination cages

A subset of coordination cages have garnered considerable recent attention for their potential permanent porosity in the solid state. Herein, we report a series of functionalized carbazole-based cages of the structure type M₁₂(R-cdc)₁₂ (M = Cr, Cu, Mo) where the functional groups include a range of aromatic substituents. Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations reveal a variety of intercage interactions in these materials, largely governed by pi-pi stacking. Density functional theory for a subset of these cages was used to confirm that the nature of the increased stability of aryl-functionalized cages is a result of inter-cage ligand interactions.

Tuning the Porosity, Solubility, and Gas-Storage Properties of Cuboctahedral Coordination Cages via Amide or Ester Functionalization

The molecular nature of porous coordination cages can endow these materials with significant advantages as compared to extended network solids. Chiefly among these is their solubility in volatile solvents, which can be leveraged in the synthesis, characterization, modification, and utilization of these adsorbents. Although cuboctahedral, paddlewheel-based coordination cages have shown some of the highest surface areas for coordination cages, they often have limited solubility. Here, we show that amide and ester functionalization, which has been widely utilized in porous solids to tune material properties, can be used to tune the solubility, porosity, and bulk adsorbent properties of copper-, chromium-, and molybdenum-based cuboctahedral coordination cages. In addition, we demonstrate that the solubility of a set of diphenylamide-functionalized cages can be utilized to increase their bulk densities for gas storage applications. For a subset of these cages, we further show that amide and ester functional groups can be added postsynthetically, a strategy that is particularly important for the latter where direct cage syntheses with these groups are challenging.

Entropy and Random Walk Trails Water Confinement and Non-Thermal Equilibrium in Photon-Induced Nanocavities

Molecules near surfaces are regularly trapped in small cavitations. Molecular confinement, especially water confinement, shows intriguing and unexpected behavior including surface entropy adjustment; nevertheless, observations of entropic variation during molecular confinement are scarce. An experimental assessment of the correlation between surface strain and entropy during molecular confinement in tiny crevices is difficult because strain variances fall in the nanometer scale. In this work, entropic variations during water confinement in 2D nano/micro cavitations were observed. Experimental results and random walk simulations of water molecules inside different size nanocavitations show that the mean escaping time of molecular water from nanocavities largely deviates from the mean collision time of water molecules near surfaces, crafted by 157 nm vacuum ultraviolet laser light on polyacrylamide matrixes. The mean escape time distribution of a few molecules indicates a non-thermal equilibrium state inside the cavity. The time differentiation inside and outside nanocavities reveals an additional state of ordered arrangements between nanocavities and molecular water ensembles of fixed molecular length near the surface. The configured number of microstates correctly counts for the experimental surface entropy deviation during molecular water confinement. The methodology has the potential to identify confined water molecules in nanocavities with life science importance.

Self-assembly of a cobalt(II)-based metal-organic framework as an effective water-splitting heterogeneous catalyst for light-driven hydrogen production

The solar photocatalysis of water splitting represents a significant branch of enzymatic simulation by efficient chemical conversion and the generation of hydrogen as green energy provides a feasible way for the replacement of fossil fuels to solve energy and environmental issues. We report herein the self-assembly of a Co^II-based metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from 4,4',4'',4'''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrabenzoic acid [or tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene, H₄TCPE] and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy) as four-point- and two-point-connected nodes, respectively. This material, namely, poly[(μ-4,4'-bipyridyl)[μ₈-4,4',4'',4'''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrabenzoato]cobalt(II)], [Co(C₃₀H₁₆O₈)(C₁₀H₈N₂)]_n, crystallized as dark-red block-shaped crystals with high crystallinity and was fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, PXRD, IR, solid-state UV-Vis and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The redox-active Co^II atoms in the structure could be used as the catalytic sites for hydrogen production via water splitting. The application of this new MOF as a heterogeneous catalyst for light-driven H₂ production has been explored in a three-component system with fluorescein as photosensitizer and trimethylamine as the sacrificial electron donor, and the initial volume of H₂ production is about 360 µmol after 12 h irradiation.

Structure and redox tuning of gas adsorption properties in calixarene-supported Fe(ii)-based porous cages

We describe the synthesis of Fe(ii)-based octahedral coordination cages supported by calixarene capping ligands. The most porous of these molecular cages has an argon accessible BET surface area of 898 m2 g-1 (1497 m2 g-1 Langmuir). The modular synthesis of molecular cages allows for straightforward substitution of both the bridging carboxylic acid ligands and the calixarene caps to tune material properties. In this context, the adsorption enthalpies of C2/C3 hydrocarbons ranged from -24 to -46 kJ mol-1 at low coverage, where facile structural modifications substantially influence hydrocarbon uptakes. These materials exhibit remarkable stability toward oxidation or decomposition in the presence of air and moisture, but application of a suitable chemical oxidant generates oxidized cages over a controlled range of redox states. This provides an additional handle for tuning the porosity and stability of the Fe cages.
