Cluster–Nuclei Coassembled into Two-Dimensional Hybrid CuO-PMA Sub-1 nm Nanosheets

High-entropy-perovskite subnanowires for photoelectrocatalytic coupling of methane to acetic acid

The incorporation of multiple immiscible metals in high-entropy oxides can create the unconventional coordination environment of catalytic active sites, while the high formation temperature of high-entropy oxides results in bulk materials with low specific surface areas. Here we develop the high-entropy LaMnO3-type perovskite-polyoxometalate subnanowire heterostructures with periodically aligned high-entropy LaMnO3 oxides and polyoxometalate under a significantly reduced temperature of 100 oC, which is much lower than the temperature required by state-of-the-art calcination methods for synthesizing high-entropy oxides. The high-entropy LaMnO3-polyoxometalate subnanowires exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the photoelectrochemical coupling of methane into acetic acid under mild conditions (1 bar, 25 oC), with a high productivity (up to 4.45 mmol g‒1cat h‒1) and selectivity ( > 99%). Due to the electron delocalization at the subnanometer scale, the contiguous active sites of high-entropy LaMnO3 and polyoxometalate in the heterostructure can efficiently activate C - H bonds and stabilize the resulted *COOH intermediates, which benefits the in situ coupling of *CH3 and *COOH into acetic acid.

Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

A Single Component, Single Layer Flexile Foam Evaporator with the Higher Efficiency for Water Generation

One of the greenest and promising ways to solve the problem of freshwater crisis is surface solar steam generation from seawater. A great number of photothermal materials with multi-component and multi-layered delicate yet complex structures often suffer from either low evaporation rate or high energy loss. Here, this work presents a single component foam evaporator with steam generation rate of up to 4.32 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation. The evaporator is constructed from an aniline oligomer as a single light-absorbing component, covalent linked with polyethylene glycol to form a monolithic polymer foam. Floating on the seawater, the foam has absorbance of 99.5% over the entire solar spectral range and low thermal conductivity (0.0077 W K-1m-1) that effectively retains heat in the material and at the interface. After 3 months of continuous outdoor natural sunlight irradiation, the evaporator maintains a stable and durable evaporation rate. Moreover, the materials have good mechanical properties (7.48 MPa young's modulus and 57.38% elongation at break) and excellent chemical resistance in 10 common organic solvents and aqueous solutions of pH = 1 to 14. This study provides a new system and strategy for desalination, steam power generation, treatment of polluted water and sewage, etc.

Polyoxometallate Cluster Induced High-Entropy Oxide Sub-1 nm Nanosheets as Photoelectrocatalysts for Zn-Air Batteries

The lack of highly efficient and inexpensive catalysts severely hinders the large-scale application of Zn-air batteries (ZABs). High-entropy oxides (HEOs) exhibit unique structures and attractive properties; thus, they are promising to be used in ZABs. However, conventional high-temperature synthesis methods tend to obtain microscale HEOs with a lower exposure rate of active sites. Here, we report a facile solvothermal strategy for preparing two-dimensional (2D) HEO sub-1 nm nanosheets (SNSs) induced by polyoxometalate (POM) clusters. Taking advantage of the special 2D sub-1 nm structure and precise element regulation, these 2D HEOs-POM SNSs exhibit enhanced bifunctional oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reaction activity under light irradiation. Further applying these 2D HEOs-POM SNSs to ZABs as cathode catalysts, the CoFeNiMnCuZnOx-phosphomolybdic acid SNSs-based ZABs deliver a low charge/discharge voltage gap of 0.25 V at 2 mA cm-2 under light irradiation. Meanwhile, it could maintain an ultralong-term stability for 1600 h at 2 mA cm-2 and 930 h at 10 mA cm-2. The 2D sub-1 nm structure and fine element control in HEOs provide opportunities to solve the problems of low intrinsic activity, limited active sites, and instability of air cathodes in ZABs.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of polyoxometalate-Dy2O3 monolayer nanosheets and nanotubes

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have shown unique chemical and physical properties; however, their synthesis is highly dependent on the layered structure of building blocks. Herein, we developed monolayer Dy2O3-phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) nanosheets and nanotubes based on microwave synthesis. Microwave-assisted synthesis with high-energy input gives a faster and dynamically driven growth of nanomaterials, resulting in high-purity nanostructures with a narrow size distribution. The reaction times of the nanosheets and nanotubes under microwave synthesis are significantly reduced compared with oven-synthesis. Dy2O3-PMA nanosheets and nanotubes exhibit enhanced activity and stability in photoconductance, with higher sensitivities (0.308 μA cm-2 for nanosheets and 0.271 μA cm-2 for nanotubes) compared to the individual PMA (0.12 μA cm-2) and Dy2O3 (0.025 μA cm-2) building blocks. This work demonstrates the promising application potential of microwave-synthesized 2D heterostructures in superconductors and photoelectronic devices.

Exudate-Induced Gelatinizable Nanofiber Membrane with High Exudate Absorption and Super Bactericidal Capacity for Bacteria-Infected Wound Management

Invasion of bacteria and continuous oozing of exudate are significant causes of interference with the healing of infected wounds. Therefore, an exudate-induced gelatinizable and near-infrared (NIR)-responsive nanofiber membrane composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), and Fe-doped phosphomolybdic acid (Fe-PMA) with exceptional exudate absorption capacity and potent bactericidal efficacy is developed and denoted as the PVA-FP-CMC membrane. After absorbing exudate, the fiber membrane can transform into a hydrogel membrane, forming coordination bonds between the Fe-PMA and CMC. The unique exudate-induced gelation process imparts the membrane with high exudate absorption and retention capability, and the formed hydrogel also traps the bacteria that thrive in the exudate. Moreover, it is discovered for the first time that the Fe-PMA exhibits an enhanced photothermal conversion capability and photocatalytic activity compared to the PMA. Therefore, the presence of Fe-PMA provides the membrane with a photothermal and photodynamic therapeutic effect for killing bacteria. The PVA-FP-CMC membrane is proven with a liquid absorption ratio of 520.7%, a light-heat conversion efficiency of 41.9%, high-level generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2), and a bacterial killing ratio of 100% for S. aureus and 99.6% for E. coli. The treatment of infected wounds on the backs of rats further confirms the promotion of wound healing by the PVA-FP-CMC membrane with NIR irradiation. Overall, this novel functional dressing for the synergistic management of bacteria-infected wounds presents a promising therapeutic strategy for tissue repair and regeneration.

Polyoxometalate Induced Assembly Into Surface Functionalized Multidimensional Heterostructures with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

The self-assembly of inorganic nanocrystals offers an efficient way for the fabrication of functional materials. However, it is still challenging for the construction of multidimensional nanostructures with controllable shapes, compositions and functions. Here, a series of heterostructures in different dimensions by surface modification of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters is developed. Three kinds of POM clusters (phosphomolybdic acid (PMA), phosphotungstic acid (PTA) and silicotungstic acid (STA) and five kinds of metal oxides (TiO2 , VOx , La2 O3 , In2 O3 and Gd2 O3 ) can be used as building blocks, and a class of 1D, 2D and 3D heterostructures can be achieved by the control of surface ligand coverage. Compared with individual building blocks and other cluster-based superstructures, TiO2 -PMA superstructures exhibit enhanced catalytic activity toward thioether oxidations, which is attributed to the electron transfer between TiO2 and POM clusters.

Hybrid Sub-1 nm Nanosheets of Co-assembled MnZnCuOx and Polyoxometalate Clusters as Anodes for Li-ion Batteries

Transition metal oxide (TMO) anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) usually suffer from serious volume expansion leading to the pulverization of structures, further giving rise to lower specific capacity and worse cycling stability. Herein, by introducing polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into TMOs and precisely controlling the amount of POMs, the MnZnCuOx -phosphomolybdic acid hybrid sub-1 nm nanosheets (MZC-PMA HSNSs) anode is successfully fabricated, where the special electron rich structure of POMs is conducive to accelerating the migration of lithium ions on the anode to obtain higher specific capacity, and the non-covalent interactions between POMs and TMOs make the HSNSs possess excellent structural and chemical stability, thus exhibiting outstanding electrochemical performance in LIBs, achieving a high reversible capacity (1157 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 ) and an admirable long-term cycling stability at low and high current densities.

Spiral Square Nanosheets Assembled from Ru Clusters

Spiral two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets exhibit unique physical and chemical phenomena due to their twisted structures. While self-assembly of clusters is an ideal strategy to form hierarchical 2D structures, it is challenging to form spiral nanosheets. Herein, we first report a screw dislocation involved assembled method to obtain 2D spiral cluster assembled nanosheets (CANs) with uniform square morphology. The 2D spiral Ru CANs with a length of approximately 4 μm and thickness of 20.7 ± 3.0 nm per layer were prepared via the assembly of 1-2 nm Ru clusters in the presence of molten block copolymer Pluronic F127. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) demonstrate the existence of screw dislocation in the spiral assembled structure. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectrum indicates that Ru clusters are Ru³⁺ species, and Ru atoms are mainly coordinated with Cl with a coordination number of 6.5. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectra (¹H NMR) indicate that the assembly process of Ru clusters is formed by noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding and hydrophilic interactions. Additionally, the Ru-F127 CANs exhibit excellent photothermal conversion performance in the near-infrared (NIR) region.

Self-Supporting Nanoporous Copper Film with High Porosity and Broadband Light Absorption for Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Solar steam generation (SSG) is a potential technology for freshwater production, which is expected to address the global water shortage problem. Some noble metals with good photothermal conversion performance have received wide concerns in SSG, while high cost limits their practical applications for water purification. Herein, a self-supporting nanoporous copper (NP-Cu) film was fabricated by one-step dealloying of a specially designed Al98Cu2 precursor with a dilute solid solution structure. In-situ and ex-situ characterizations were performed to reveal the phase and microstructure evolutions during dealloying. The NP-Cu film shows a unique three-dimensional bicontinuous ligament-channel structure with high porosity (94.8%), multi scale-channels and nanoscale ligaments (24.2 ± 4.4 nm), leading to its strong broadband absorption over the 200-2500 nm wavelength More importantly, the NP-Cu film exhibits excellent SSG performance with high evaporation rate, superior efficiency and good stability. The strong desalination ability of NP-Cu also manifests its potential applications in seawater desalination. The related mechanism has been rationalized based upon the nanoporous network, localized surface plasmon resonance effect and hydrophilicity.

Precise Assembly of Polyoxometalates at Single-cluster Levels

Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters with atomic precision structures are promising candidates construct functional nanomaterials via self-assembly. Non-covalent interactions at molecular levels can govern the self-assembly of POM clusters, for which the precise control of POM-based assemblies can be realized at single-cluster levels. This mini-review focuses on the synthesis and properties of POM-based nanostructures, including amphiphilic POM assemblies and co-assemblies of POM clusters and other subnanometer building blocks. Several synthetic strategies have been developed for rational control of POM-based assemblies in terms of morphologies, compositions and properties. 1D subnanometer POM assemblies demonstrate remarkable enhanced mechanical properties due to the topological interactions between nanowires and surroundings. The in-depth understanding of POM-based assemblies may help in the design of functional nanomaterials in fundamental perspectives and applications.

Heteropoly Blue/Carbon Nanotubes Nanocomposites as High-Performance Photothermal Conversion Materials

To realize the direct and full use of the widely distributed solar energy, developing novel materials with superb photothermal conversion capability is essential. Although heteropoly blue has intrinsic outstanding solar absorption and photothermal conversion properties, its spectral absorption in the infrared region is weak. Here, composites of heteropoly blue and carbon nanotubes (HPB/CNTs) are synthesized depending on electrostatic interactions by facile microwave sonication and freeze-drying. The doped CNTs can dramatically improve the spectral absorption performance of HPB ontology in the infrared region. As a result, the light absorption of the optimized HPB/CNTs (20 %) reaches more than 95 % in the range of 200-2400 nm, showing promising prospects as high-performance photothermal conversion material in the applications of solar desalination and wastewater treatment.

Hierarchy of hybrid materials. Part-II: The place of organics-on-inorganics in it, their composition and applications

Hybrid materials or hybrids incorporating organic and inorganic constituents are emerging as a very potent and promising class of materials due to the diverse but complementary nature of their properties. This complementarity leads to a perfect synergy of properties of the desired materials and products as well as to an extensive range of their application areas. Recently, we have overviewed and classified hybrid materials describing inorganics-in-organics in Part-I (Saveleva, et al., Front. Chem., 2019, 7, 179). Here, we extend that work in Part-II describing organics-on-inorganics, i.e., inorganic materials modified by organic moieties, their structure and functionalities. Inorganic constituents comprise of colloids/nanoparticles and flat surfaces/matrices comprise of metallic (noble metal, metal oxide, metal-organic framework, magnetic nanoparticles, alloy) and non-metallic (minerals, clays, carbons, and ceramics) materials; while organic additives can include molecules (polymers, fluorescence dyes, surfactants), biomolecules (proteins, carbohydtrates, antibodies and nucleic acids) and even higher-level organisms such as cells, bacteria, and microorganisms. Similarly to what was described in Part-I, we look at similar and dissimilar properties of organic-inorganic materials summarizing those bringing complementarity and composition. A broad range of applications of these hybrid materials is also presented whose development is spurred by engaging different scientific research communities.

Recent progress of sub-1 nm nanomaterials: synthesis, polymer-analogue properties and applications in redox catalysis

Sub-1 nm nanomaterials (SNMs) have attracted attention for their novel structures and size-related properties. In the past decade, various SNMs were synthesized, such as nanowires, nanorings, nanosheets, nanobelts, nanotubes, and other superstructures. We discussed their synthetic strategies systematically, including the ligand pathway and the cluster-nuclei co-assembly pathway. In addition, SNMs exhibit unique size-related properties. Firstly, SNWs show polymer-analogue properties due to their sub-nanometric size and ultrahigh aspect ratio. We illustrate the polymer-analogue properties on both microscopic and macroscopic scales. The macroscopic assemblies of SNWs can be widely applied for organic liquid storage, energy, and optical applications. Finally, we summarized the applications of SNMs in redox catalysis. Their extraordinary catalytic activity is attributed to their large specific surface area and electronic delocalization at the sub-nanometric scale. We hope this feature article can provide new viewpoints on the design and applications of SNMs.

Self-supported molybdenum nickel oxide catalytic electrode designed via molecular cluster-mediated electroplating and electrochemical activation for an efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction

Efficient and durable nonprecious catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for practical water electrolysis for hydrogen production. A self-supported OER catalytic electrode with sufficient exposure of the catalyst and tight anchoring onto the current collector is vital for the catalytic activity and stability, and is therefore deemed to be a preferable tactic to enhance water electrolysis performance. Herein, a polyoxometalate (POM) molecular cluster-mediated electroplating and activation tactics are proposed to design a self-supported molybdenum nickel oxide (MoNiO_x) catalytic electrode for the OER. The MoNiO_x active layer can anchor tightly onto the Ni foam current collector with sufficient surface exposure and high structural stability, therefore enabling high alkali OER catalytic efficiency (222 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) and robust durability (only slight decay in catalytic efficiency upon 12 days of chronopotentiometry (V-t) test). Moreover, the easily processable electroplating and active protocol can serve as a general approach to prepare other OER catalytic electrodes by altering the reactants and current collectors. The current work paves a facile and universal way to design a highly active and durable molybdenum (Mo) based hybrid catalytic electrode for OER via molecular cluster-assisted electroplating and activation treatment.

Coupling solar-driven photothermal effect into photocatalysis for sustainable water treatment

Effectively harnessing renewable and inexhaustible solar radiation for energy conversion has attracted significant research interest in the past decade. Solar thermal conversion, as a ubiquitous phenomenon, can be implemented to evaporate water and concurrently boost photocatalytic performance for addressing freshwater scarcity and energy crisis. Most recently, solar water evaporation accompanied by photocatalytic degradation, sterilization, and hydrogen production has been proposed as a promising avenue to endow new vitality into the field of clean water and energy production. Driven by the advances of rationally designed solar-powered functional materials, a large variety of photothermal-coupled photocatalysis technologies have been exploited. In this context, it is imperative to summarize the recent progress and discuss the challenges in this multidisciplinary field. Herein, we overview photothermal materials based on various fundamental principles and highlight emerging applications in the areas of solar water evaporation, water purification, and solar-driven energy production. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives toward both fundamental research and practical applications are also proposed. It is envisioned that this review can provide insightful suggestions to further advance the development of integrated solar thermal driven water evaporation and photocatalytic systems to fulfill concurrent energy conversion and environmental applications.

Molybdenum oxide-iron, cobalt, copper alloy hybrid as efficient bifunctional catalyst for alkali water electrolysis

Efficient and durable non-precious catalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for practical water electrolysis toward clean hydrogen fuel. Herein, a molybdenum oxide-FeCoCu alloy hybrid (MoO_x-FeCoCu) catalyst was designed by polyoxometallate (POM) molecular cluster mediated solvothermal alcoholysis and ammonolysis of metal salts followed by pyrolytic reduction treatment. The HER efficiency is substantially enhanced by the ternary alloy component, which is more close to the benchmark Pt/C catalyst, and the HER catalytic stability is also superior to Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the MoO_x-FeCoCu demonstrates high catalytic efficiency and rather good durability for OER. Benefitted by the bifunctional catalytic behaviors for HER and OER, the symmetric water electrolyzer based on the MoO_x-FeCoCu electrode requires a low driving voltage of 1.69 V to deliver a response current density of 10 mA cm^-2, which is comparable to that based on the benchmark Pt/C HER cathode and RuO₂ OER anode. The current work offers a feasible way to design efficient bifunctional catalyst for water electrolysis via POM mediated co-assembly and calcination treatment.

Recent Progress of Sub-Nanometric Materials in Photothermal Energy Conversion

Sub-nanometric materials (SNMs) are an attractive scope in recent years due to their atomic-level size and unique properties. Among various performances of SNMs, photothermal energy conversion is one of the most important ones because it can efficiently utilize the light energy. Herein, the SNMs with photothermal energy conversion behaviors and their applications are reviewed. First, a hydrothermal/solvothermal method for the synthesis of SNMs is systematically discussed, including the LaMer pathway and the cluster-nuclei coassembly pathway. Based on this synthetic strategy, many kinds of SNMs with different morphologies are successfully prepared, such as nanorings, nanowires, nanosheets, and nanobelts. These SNMs exhibit excellent photothermal performance under the laser or solar irradiation according to their different light absorption ranges. These enhanced absorption performances of SNMs are induced by the mechanism of plasmonic localized heating or nonradiative relaxation. Finally, the applications of the photothermal SNMs are illustrated. The SNMs with photothermal behaviors can be widely applied in the fields of solar vapor generation, biomedicine, and light-responsive composites construction. It is hoped that this review can provide new viewpoints and profound understanding to the SNMs in photothermal energy conversion.

Cluster-Nuclei Coassembled One-Dimensional Subnanometer Heteronanostructures

The cluster-nuclei coassembled strategy provides an impressive way to obtain 1D subnanometer heteronanostructures, including subnanometer nanowires and subnanometer nanobelts. These nanomaterials have diameters and thicknesses close to the size of a unit cell and exhibit excellent performance originating from multicomponent synergy. This Mini Review summarizes the recent progress of these novel functional nanomaterials, including their properties and applications in catalysis, energy conversion, and other fields. On the basis of previous studies, the development direction of cluster-nuclei coassembled 1D subnanometer materials is pointed out.

Chiral Conformation of Subnanometric Materials

Subnanometric materials (SNMs) refer to nanomaterials with sizes comparable to the diameter of common linear polymers or confined at the level of a single unit cell in at least one dimension, usually <1 nm. Conventional inorganic nanoparticles are usually deemed to be rigid, lacking self-adjustable conformation. In contrast, the size at subnanometric scale endows SNMs with flexibility analogous to polymers, resulting in their abundant self-adjustable conformation. It is noteworthy that some highly flexible SNMs can adjust their shape automatically to form chiral conformation, which is rare in conventional inorganic nanoparticles. Herein, we summarize the chiral conformation of SNMs and clarify the driving force behind their formation, in an attempt to establish a better understanding for the origin of flexibility and chirality at subnanometric scale. In addition, the general strategies for controlling the conformation of SNMs are elaborated, which might shed light on the efficient fabrications of chiral inorganic materials. Finally, the challenges facing this area as well as some unexplored topics are discussed.

Sub-Nanometer Thick Wafer-Size NiO Films with Room-Temperature Ferromagnetic Behavior

Adding ferromagnetism into semiconductors attracts much attentions due to its potential usage of magnetic spins in novel devices, such as spin field-effect transistors. However, it remains challenging to stabilize their ferromagnetism above room temperature. Here we introduce an atomic chemical-solution strategy to grow wafer-size NiO thin films with controllable thickness down to sub-nanometer scale (0.92 nm) for the first time. Surface lattice defects break the magnetic symmetry of NiO and produce surface ferromagnetic behaviors. Our sub-nanometric NiO thin film exhibits the highest reported room-temperature ferromagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 157 emu/cc and coercivity of 418 Oe. Attributed to wafer size, the easily-transferred NiO thin film is further verified in a magnetoresistance device. Our work provides a sub-nanometric platform to produce wafer-size ferromagnetic NiO thin films as atomic layer magnetic units in future transparent magnetoelectric devices.

ZnO-POM Cluster Sub-1 nm Nanosheets as Robust Catalysts for the Oxidation of Thioethers at Room Temperature

Two-dimensional (2D) zinc oxides have attracted more and more research interests due to their unique properties. Yet, it remains a great challenge to limit the thickness to the sub-1 nm scale and further combine with other components to obtain 2D hybrid zinc oxide (ZnO)-based sub-1 nm materials. Herein, a versatile strategy was successfully developed to realize the controllable preparation of ZnO-polyoxometalate (POM)-based 2D hybrid sub-1 nm nanosheet (HSNS) superstructures by incorporating three kinds of molybdenum-based POM clusters into the zinc oxide system. Molecular dynamics simulation results demonstrated that POM clusters interact with ZnO/Zn(OH)₂ molecules and coassembled into stable 2D HSNSs. Significantly, theses materials as robust catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in the oxidation of thioethers at room temperature, which partly can be attributed to the special 2D sub-1 nm nanostructures with large specific areas leading to the full exposure of active sites. Meanwhile, the synergetic effect of multiple components also played an important role during the catalytic process. Thus, this work would pave the way for the precise synthesis of multicomponent 2D hybrid sub-1 nm materials for widespread applications.

Ternary hybrid CuO-PMA-Ag sub-1 nm nanosheet heterostructures

Multi-component two-dimensional (2D) hybrid sub-1 nm heterostructures could potentially possess many novel properties. Controlling the site-selective distribution of nanoparticles (NPs) at the edge of 2D hybrid nanomaterial substrates is desirable but it remains a great challenge. Herein, we realized for the first time the preparation of ternary hybrid CuO-phosphomolybdic acid-Ag sub-1 nm nanosheet heterostructures (CuO-PMA-Ag THSNHs), where the Ag NPs selectively distributed at the edge of 2D hybrid CuO-PMA sub-1 nm nanosheets (SNSs). And the obtained CuO-PMA-Ag THSNHs as the catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in alkene epoxidation. Furthermore, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated that the SNSs interact with Ag NPs to form stable nanoheterostructures. This work would pave the way for the synthesis and broader applications of multi-component 2D hybrid sub-1 nm heterostructures.

Shape Control of Monodispersed Sub-5 nm Pd Tetrahedrons and Laciniate Pd Nanourchins by Maneuvering the Dispersed State of Additives for Boosting ORR Performance

It is a great challenge to simultaneously control the size, morphology, and facets of monodispersed Pd nanocrystals under a sub-5 nm regime. Meanwhile, quantitative understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters to maneuver the shape evolution of nanocrystals in a one-pot system still deserves investigation. Herein, a systematic study of the density functional theory (DFT)-calculated adsorption energy, thermodynamic factors, and reduction kinetics on Pd growth patterns is reported by combining theory and experiments, with a focus on the dispersed state of additives. As pure models, monodispersed Pd tetrahedrons enclosed by (111) facets with a narrow size distribution of 4.9 ± 1 nm and a high purity approaching 98% can be obtained when using 1,1'-binaphthalene (C₂₀ H₁₄ ) +2NH₃ as additives. Specifically, laciniate Pd nanourchins (Pd LUs) can evolve via anisotropic growth when replacing additive with dose-consistent 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine (C₂₀ H₁₆ N₂ , two NH₂ binding in C₂₀ H₁₄ ). Catalytic investigations show that the sub-5 nm Pd tetrahedrons exhibit higher activity in both the oxygen reduction (E_onset = 1.025 V, E_1/2 = 0.864 V) and formic acid oxidation reaction with respect to the Pd LUs and Pd black, which represents a great step for the development of well-defined Pd nanocrystals with size in the sub-5 nm regime as non-Pt electrocatalysts.
