Mono- and Tripodal Porphyrins: Investigation on the Influence of the Number of Pyrene Anchors in Carbon Nanotube and Graphene Hybrids

Simultaneous exfoliation and functionalization of MoS2 with tetrapyridyl porphyrin

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) attracts the attention of the scientific community due to its thickness dependent properties. To fully exploit these features, it is necessary to produce the material in mono or few-layers on a large scale. Several methodologies have been developed for this purpose, the most promising one being liquid phase exfoliation (LPE). LPE allows obtaining good quality exfoliated MoS2 in a simple and scalable manner. Herein we report the simultaneous exfoliation and functionalization of MoS2 in chloroform using a specific porphyrin, namely tetrapyridyl porphyrin. We have corroborated that the exfoliation of MoS2 in the volatile solvent increases in the presence of the porphyrin due to the different interactions between them, obtaining dispersions with good concentrations. Additionally, the optical properties of the porphyrin are modified by these interactions. The characterization carried out by several techniques supports the hypothesis that the interactions occur through the pyridyl rings of the porphyrin and the molybdenum atoms of the material.

Geometric Transformation of Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Heterometallic Nanostructured Material: A Model for the Electrochemical Discrimination of Insecticides

Multifunctional carbon-based materials exhibit a large number of unprecedented active sites via an electron transfer process and act as a desired platform for exploring high-performance electroactive material. Herein, we exemplify the holistic design of a heterometallic nanostructured material (MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb) formed by the integration of metals (Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+) and a dipodal ligand (KR-6) at the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). First, MWCNTs@KR-6 was readily synthesized via a noncovalent approach, which was further sequentially doped by Mn2+, Sn2+, and Pb2+ to give MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb. The designed material showed excellent electrochemical activity for the discrimination of insecticides belonging to structurally different classes. In contrast to that of the individual building components, both the stability and electrochemical activity of heterometallic nanostructured material were remarkably enhanced, resulting in a magnificent electrochemical performance of the developed material. Hence, the current work reports a comprehensive synthetic approach for MWCNTs@KR-6/Mn/Sn/Pb synthesis by synergizing unique properties of the heterometallic complex with MWCNTs. This work also offers a new insight into the design of multifunctional carbon-based materials for discrimination of different analytes on the basis of their redox potential.

Anion-π catalysis on carbon allotropes

Anion-π catalysis, introduced in 2013, stands for the stabilization of anionic transition states on π-acidic aromatic surfaces. Anion-π catalysis on carbon allotropes is particularly attractive because high polarizability promises access to really strong anion-π interactions. With these expectations, anion-π catalysis on fullerenes has been introduced in 2017, followed by carbon nanotubes in 2019. Consistent with expectations from theory, anion-π catalysis on carbon allotropes generally increases with polarizability. Realized examples reach from enolate addition chemistry to asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions and autocatalytic ether cyclizations. Currently, anion-π catalysis on carbon allotropes gains momentum because the combination with electric-field-assisted catalysis promises transformative impact on organic synthesis.

Electric field-assisted anion-π catalysis on carbon nanotubes in electrochemical microfluidic devices

The vision to control the charges migrating during reactions with external electric fields is attractive because of the promise of general catalysis, emergent properties, and programmable devices. Here, we explore this idea with anion-π catalysis, that is the stabilization of anionic transition states on aromatic surfaces. Catalyst activation by polarization of the aromatic system is most effective. This polarization is induced by electric fields. The use of electrochemical microfluidic reactors to polarize multiwalled carbon nanotubes as anion-π catalysts emerges as essential. These reactors provide access to high fields at low enough voltage to prevent electron transfer, afford meaningful effective catalyst/substrate ratios, and avoid interference from additional electrolytes. Under these conditions, the rate of pyrene-interfaced epoxide-opening ether cyclizations is linearly voltage-dependent at positive voltages and negligible at negative voltages. While electromicrofluidics have been conceived for redox chemistry, our results indicate that their use for supramolecular organocatalysis has the potential to noncovalently electrify organic synthesis in the broadest sense.

Enhanced Thermoelectricity in Metal-[60]Fullerene-Graphene Molecular Junctions

The thermoelectric properties of molecular junctions consisting of a metal Pt electrode contacting [60]fullerene derivatives covalently bound to a graphene electrode have been studied by using a conducting-probe atomic force microscope (c-AFM). The [60]fullerene derivatives are covalently linked to the graphene via two meta-connected phenyl rings, two para-connected phenyl rings, or a single phenyl ring. We find that the magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient is up to nine times larger than that of Au-C₆₀-Pt molecular junctions. Moreover, the sign of the thermopower can be either positive or negative depending on the details of the binding geometry and on the local value of the Fermi energy. Our results demonstrate the potential of using graphene electrodes for controlling and enhancing the thermoelectric properties of molecular junctions and confirm the outstanding performance of [60]fullerene derivatives.

The Progress of Metal-Organic Framework for Boosting CO2 Conversion

With the rapid development of modern society, environmental problems, including excessive amounts of CO2 released in the atmosphere, are becoming more and more serious. It is necessary to develop new materials and technologies to reduce pollution. Among them, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown potential for application in the area of catalysis due to their ultra-high specific surface area, structural versatility, and designability as well as ease of modification and post-synthesis. Herein, we summarize recent research advances by use of MOFs for boosting CO2 conversion. Furthermore, challenges and possible research directions related to further exploration are also discussed.

Supramolecular Assembly of Edge Functionalized Top-Down Chiral Graphene Quantum Dots

The construction of supramolecular assemblies of heterogeneous materials at the nanoscale is an open challenge in science. Herein, new chiral graphene quantum dots (GQDs) prepared by amidation reaction introducing chiral amide groups and pyrene moieties into the periphery of GQDs are described. The analytical and spectroscopic data show an efficient chemical functionalization and the morphological study of the supramolecular ensembles using SEM and AFM microscopies reveals the presence of highly ordered fibers of several micrometers length. Fluorescence studies, using emission spectroscopy and confocal microscopy, reveal that the fibers stem from the π-π stacking of both pyrenes and GQDs, together with the hydrogen bonding interactions of the amide groups. Circular dichroism analysis supports the chiral nature of the supramolecular aggregates.

Deciphering Photoinduced Charge Transfer Dynamics in a Cross-Linked Graphene-Dye Nanohybrid

The search for synthetic materials that mimic natural photosynthesis by converting solar energy into other more useful forms of energy is an ever-growing research endeavor. Graphene-based materials, with their exceptional electronic and optical properties, are exemplary candidates for high-efficiency solar energy harvesting devices. High photoactivity can be conveniently achieved by functionalizing graphene with small molecule organic semiconductors whose band-gaps can be tuned by structural modification, leading to interactions between the π-conjugated electronic systems in both the semiconductor and graphene. Here we investigate the ultrafast transient optical properties of a cross-linked graphene-dye (diphenyl-dithiophenediketopyrrolopyrrole) nanohybrid material, in which oligomers of the organic semiconductor dye are covalently bound to a random network of few-layer graphene flakes, and compare the results to those obtained for the reference dye monomer. Using a combination of ultrafast transient absorption and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy, we provide substantial evidence for photoinduced charge transfer that occurs within 18 ps in the nanohybrid system. Notably, subpicosecond photoinduced torsional relaxation observed in the constituent dye monomer is absent in the cross-linked nanohybrid system. Through density functional theory calculations, we compare the competing effects of covalent bonding, increasing conjugation length, and the presence of multiple graphene flakes. We find evidence that the observed ultrafast charge transfer process occurs through a superexchange mechanism in which the oligomeric dye bridge provides virtual states enabling charge transfer between graphene-dye covalent bond sites.

Magnetic, Mechanically Interlocked Porphyrin-Carbon Nanotubes for Quantum Computation and Spintronics

Atomic-scale reproducibility and tunability endorse magnetic molecules as candidates for spin qubits and spintronics. A major challenge is to implant those molecular spins into circuit geometries that may allow one, two, or a few spins to be addressed in a controlled way. Here, the formation of mechanically bonded, magnetic porphyrin dimeric rings around carbon nanotubes (mMINTs) is presented. The mechanical bond places the porphyrin magnetic cores in close contact with the carbon nanotube without disturbing their structures. A combination of spectroscopic techniques shows that the magnetic geometry of the dimers is preserved upon formation of the macrocycle and the mMINT. Moreover, the metallic core selection determines the spin location in the mMINT. The suitability of mMINTs as qubits is explored by measuring their quantum coherence times (T_m). Formation of the dimeric ring preserves the T_m found in the monomer, which remains in the μs scale for mMINTs. The carbon nanotube is used as vessel to place the molecules in complex circuits. This strategy can be extended to other families of magnetic molecules. The size and composition of the macrocycle can be tailored to modulate magnetic interactions between the cores and to introduce magnetic asymmetries (heterometallic dimers) for more complex molecule-based qubits.

Amphiphilic Zinc Porphyrin Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Hybrids: Efficient Formation and Excited State Charge Transfer Studies

Herein, the microscopic and spectroscopic characterization of a novel non-covalent electron donor-acceptor system, in which three different metalloporphyrins (1, 2, and 3) play the dual role of light harvester and electron donor with SWCNTs as electron acceptor, is described. To this end, microscopy, that is, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) corroborate the formation of 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT. Spectroscopy by means of Raman, fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy confirmed efficient charge-transfer interaction from photoexcited metalloporphyrins to SWCNTs in the ground and excited state of 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT. The complementary use of spectroelectrochemical and transient absorption measurements substantiates the formation of one-electron oxidized metalloporphyrins after photoexcitation. Multiwavelength global analysis provides insights into the charge-separation and recombination processes in 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT upon photoexcitation. Notably, both the charge-separation and recombination dynamics are fastest in 2-SWCNT. Importantly, the strongest interactions in the steady-state experiments are associated with the fastest excited state decay in the time-resolved measurements.

Initiating Electron Transfer in Doubly-curved Nanographene Upon Supramolecular Complexation of C60

The formation of supramolecular complexes between C₆₀ and a molecular nanographene endowed with both positive and negative curvatures is described. The presence of a corannulene moiety and the saddle shape of the molecular nanographene allows the formation of complexes with 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 stoichiometries. The association constants for the three possible supramolecular complexes were determined by ¹H NMR titration. Furthermore, the stability of the three complexes was calculated by theoretical methods that also predict the photoinduced electron transfer from the curved nanographene to the electron acceptor C₆₀. Time‐resolved transient absorption measurements on the ns‐time scale showed that the addition of C₆₀ to NG‐1 solutions and photo‐exciting them at 460 nm leads to the solvent‐dependent formation of new species, in particular the formation of the one‐electron reduced form of C₆₀ in benzonitrile was observed.

Efficient charge-transfer from diketopyrrolopyrroles to single-walled carbon nanotubes

In this contribution, the excited state charge-transfer interactions between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and a variety of phenyl, 4-bromophenyl, and thiophene substituted diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPPs), is described. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and aberration corrected high resolution transmission electron microscopy (AC-HRTEM) corroborated the successful formation of DPP/SWCNTs. Steady-state absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopies all gave insights into the impact on their ground and excited states as well as on the nature of their electronic communication/interaction. Of great value was time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy on the femto- and nanosecond time-scales; it assisted in deciphering the charge-transfer mechanism from the DPPs to the SWCNT and in analyzing the dynamics thereof with transfer efficiencies of up to 81%. Important confirmation for the one-electron oxidized DPPs came from pulse radiolysis assays with focus on establishing their spectral fingerprints. Our full-fledged work demonstrates that the successful preparation of stable DPP/SWCNTs represents an important step towards establishing them as a viable alternative to porphyrin-based systems in emerging applications such as solar energy conversion.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Supported Molecular Electrocatalysis for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Synthesizing molecule@support hybrids is appealing to improve molecular electrocatalysis. We report herein metal-organic framework (MOF)-supported Co porphyrins for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with improved activity and selectivity. Co porphyrins can be grafted on MOF surfaces through ligand exchange. A variety of porphyrin@MOF hybrids were made using this method. Grafted Co porphyrins showed boosted ORR activity with large (>70 mV) anodic shift of the half-wave potential compared to ungrafted porphyrins. By using active MOFs for peroxide reduction, the number of electrons transferred per O₂ increased from 2.65 to 3.70, showing significantly improved selectivity for the 4e ORR. It is demonstrated that H₂ O₂ generated from O₂ reduction at Co porphyrins is further reduced at MOF surfaces, leading to improved 4e ORR. As a practical demonstration, these hybrids were used as air electrode catalysts in Zn-air batteries, which exhibited equal performance to that with Pt-based materials.

Isomeric Pyrene-Porphyrins for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: An Unexpected Enhancement of the Photovoltaic Performance upon Structural Modification

Four pyrene-porphyrins were synthesized to study the isomer effect on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. One of these porphyrins is conjugated with a terminal pyrene, whereas the other three are each attached with a pyrene bearing an extra donor group. According to the positions of the extra donor and porphyrin core on pyrene, the 1,6-, 1,8-, and 2,7-isomers were compared for their fundamental and photovoltaic properties. For fundamental properties, UV-visible absorption, fluorescence emission, electrochemistry, and DFT calculations were carried out. For photovoltaic measurements, the seemingly inferior 1,8-isomer outperforms others with an overall efficiency of 10.30% under one-sun irradiation. Superior photovoltaic performance of the 1,8-isomeric dye may be related to the so-called umbrella effect. The findings of this work may provide insight into isomeric dye design for future applications.
