Adsorption-desorption behavior of thiram onto humic acid

Solid-state UV-MALDI-MS assay of transition metal dithiocarbamate fungicides

The determination of transition metal containing dithiocarbamate fungicides represents a challenging aspect of analytical object. They have a low stability, low solubility and stabilize versatile coordination monomers, dimers, disulfides and/or S-oxidized derivatives. Their diverse biological activities and agricultural implementation encompass plant prevention and crop protection against a variety of plants containing fungi and diseases of 400 pathogens and 70 cultures. Nonetheless, those dithiocarbamates (DTCs) are banned for agricultural use in Europe or have expiration at years 2016-2017 because of their highly toxic degradation products and/or metabolites, in particular ethylene thiourea; they found large-scale implementations in materials research and medicine. Despite the broad interdisciplinary of DTC application, due to the above reasons, they have received little attention in the rapidly growing field of analytical chemistry, and in particular, the analytical mass spectrometry. Therefore, the study reported on qualitative, quantitative and structural analysis of ten DTCs (1-10), using the matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (UV-MALDI)-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry (MS) contributed considerably to the implementation of the method for environmental and foodstuffs monitoring. Its ultrahigh resolving power and capacity for direct solid-state analysis, at limited number of sample pretreatment steps, at concentration levels of analytes of up to femtogram per gram resulted to achievement of a highly precise analytical information for these non-trivial objects. The presented fully validated method and technique is based on the successful ionization of DTCs embedded in three novel organic salts (M1-M3). In this regard, the reported MS and the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data as well as the quantum chemical one are able to correlate the molecular structures in condense and in the gas phase. Despite the novelty of the fundamental methodological character of the research reported, the promising metrology contributed to the applied aspect of the UV-MALDI-MS as a robust analytical method for environmental and foodstuffs monitoring, which is tested on two commercially available crop protecting products such as Mancozeb® and Antracol®, respectively.

Photodegradation of the fungicide thiram in aqueous solutions. Kinetic studies and identification of the photodegradation products by HPLC-MS/MS

In this study, the relevance of photodegradation processes on the persistence of the fungicide thiram in waters was investigated. The photodegradation of thiram in Milli-Q water and in aqueous solutions of humic and fulvic acids, as well as the photodegradation in spiked river water were studied. Both pure thiram and one of its commercial formulations were used to prepare the solutions which were irradiated in a solar light simulator. In general, thiram photodegradation follows pseudo-first order kinetics. The half-life time of thiram 2mgL(-1) in Milli-Q water was 28min. However, the degradation rate of thiram was significantly increased (p=0.02) by the inert components of the thiram commercial formulation as well as by commercial humic acids and by fulvic acids isolated from river water (p<0.004). Thus, the half-life time of thiram decreased to 24min in the presence of the inert formulation components, while, in the presence of both humic and fulvic acids (10mgL(-1)) it decreased to 22min. Furthermore, thiram photodegradation in natural river water showed that there is a significant enhancement of the degradation rate constant of thiram relatively to Milli-Q water, corresponding to a decrease of about 38% in its half-life time. This increase of the degradation rate in river water seems to be higher than that observed in the presence of FA, suggesting that beyond organic matter, other natural river components can increase the thiram photodegradation rate. These results allow us to conclude that photodegradation by solar radiation can be an important degradation pathway of thiram in natural waters. HPLC-MS/MS allowed to identify, for the first time, three products of the photodegradation of thiram in aqueous solution. Three compounds were identified and their structure was corroborated by the MS(n) spectra fragmentation profile. Pathways for the formation of the products from thiram photodegradation are proposed and discussed.

Influence of soil copper content on the kinetics of thiram adsorption and on thiram leachability from soils

This work aimed to assess the influence of soil copper content on the sorption processes of thiram, a fungicide widely used in agriculture, most of the times together with copper. Two different types of studies were performed: (1) desorption studies of thiram with acetonitrile after batch adsorption equilibration, and ageing of the wet soil for a variable period of time; (2) kinetic studies of thiram adsorption performed using the soil in its original form and after fortification with copper ions. In the desorption studies, with the increase of the ageing time, a decrease of the thiram peak and a simultaneous increase of a new peak, assigned to a copper complex, were observed in the chromatograms. This new peak increases sharply until an ageing period of about 4d and then this area is maintained approximately constant until 18 d, the maximum ageing period studied. These results indicate that thiram reacts with copper ions along time giving rise to the formation of relatively persistent copper complexes in soil. Desorption studies with CaCl(2) 0.01 M solution showed that this complex is not extracted. Thus, it is not easily leached to ground and surface waters and copper may contribute to thiram immobilization in soil. The kinetic studies of thiram adsorption were performed in both soils and for two initial thiram concentrations (~7 and 20 mg L(-1)). For the soil fortified with copper the percentage of adsorbed thiram is higher than observed for the original soil at the same initial concentrations and equilibration times and 100% of adsorption is attained in 15 h or 48 h, depending on the thiram initial concentration. Four kinetic equations, the pseudo first- and second-order equations, the Elovich and the intraparticle diffusion equations were selected to fit the kinetic data of the adsorption process of thiram onto both original and fortified soil. The best model to describe the kinetics of thiram adsorption onto the original soil is the intraparticle diffusion model. For the soil fortified with copper ions we verified that for the highest initial thiram concentration, the best model is also the intraparticle diffusion model, however, for the lower initial thiram concentration the best model is the pseudo second-order kinetic equation, suggesting that, for a high Cu:Thi ratio, a chemical reaction of thiram with copper ions on the soil surface can occur, and it may be the rate controlling step. Since the kinetics of adsorption depends on both soil copper content and the initial thiram concentration in solution, i.e. depends on Cu:Thi ratio, it is difficult to choose a fixed batch equilibration time for adsorption studies of thiram.

Evaluation of sorption-desorption processes for metalaxyl in natural and artificial soils

The main process controlling soil-pesticide interaction is the sorption-desorption as influenced by active soil surfaces. The sorption phenomena can influence translocation, volatility, persistence and bioactivity of a pesticide in soil. The present investigation was conducted on natural and artificial soils in order to enumerate the effect of soil components such as montmorillonite and ferrihydrite on the sorption behaviour of the fungicide metalaxyl and if sorption-desorption of the chiral pesticide affects the enantiomeric ratio. The sorption-desorption characteristics of metalaxyl were investigated by batch equilibration technique in a natural soil, two artificial soils, and in pure montmorillonite and ferrihydrite. After extraction, pesticide residues were analyzed by conventional and chiral chromatography using tandem mass spectrometry. A KdSorp (2.3-6.5) suggests low level sorption of metalaxyl with an appreciable risk of run-off and leaching. Thus, metalaxyl poses a threat to surface and ground water contamination. Furthermore, desorption tests revealed a hysteretic effect (H ≤ 0.8) in natural and artificial soils. Significant amount of metalaxyl was found tightly bound to the adsorbents without desorbing readily after desorption cycle. Desorption of 22-56% of the total amount of the retained metalaxyl was determined. This study reveals that an artificial soil derived from different soil constituents can be used to assess their influence on sorption/desorption processes. The present investigation showed that both montmorillonite and ferrihydrite play a significant role in the sorption of metalaxyl. The sorption doesn't influence the enantiomeric ratio of racemic metalaxyl.

Effect of long term organic amendments on adsorption-desorption of thiram onto a luvisol soil derived from loess

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of soil organic amendments on the sorption properties of the fungicide thiram. The organic amendments studied were organic household compost (COM), sewage sludge from municipal water treatment facilities (SLU) and farmyard manure (FYM), which were compared to mineral fertilizer application (MIN). Sorption-desorption experiments were performed using the batch method and the results indicated that the adsorption isotherms were non-linear and were found to conform to the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) model, suggesting multilayer adsorption and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions after the saturation of the surface layer. In general, distribution coefficient values, K(D), are dependent on, but not proportional to, the initial concentration of thiram. For a fixed thiram initial concentration, a significant correlation (r(2)>0.851; p<0.001) between K(D) values and the soil organic carbon content (OC) was observed. The highest value of K(D) was observed for the soil amended with compost, which is the one with the highest organic carbon content. K(D) values were divided by the soil organic carbon contents in order to obtain organic carbon partition coefficients K(OC). Comparing K(OC) means from 3 (initial concentrations) x 4 (soil organic matter compositions) x 3 (replicates) factorial ANOVA allow us to conclude that there is a significant but not proportional influence of the initial concentration of thiram on those values, but changes in the soil organic matter composition, associated to different soil amendments, have no significant influence on adsorption of thiram. To evaluate the reversibility of thiram adsorption, two consecutive desorption cycles were performed with CaCl(2) 0.01 mol L(-1). The desorption K(D) values were consistently higher (approximately twice) than those for adsorption at the same equilibrium concentrations for all soil samples supporting the existence of hysteresis in the adsorption-desorption behavior of thiram. Despite the fact that the adsorption K(D) values were proportionally increased with increasing total organic carbon content, this was not the case for the desorption K(D) values.

Effect of temperature on the sorption and desorption of perfluorooctane sulfonate on humic acid

Sorption and desorption of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) on humic acid at different temperatures were studied. It was found that the sorption process could be modeled with power kinetic equation very well, suggesting that diffusion predominated the sorption of PFOS on the humic acid. The sorption capacity was doubled when the temperature increased from 5 to 35 degrees C, and thermodynamics parameters deltaG0 was calculated to be -7.11 to -5.04 kJ/mol, AHo was 14.2 kJ/mol, and deltaS0 was 69.5 J/(mol x K), indicating that the sorption was a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy driven process. Desorption hysteresis occurred at all studied temperatures which suggested that humic acid may be an important sink of PFOS in the environment.
