Abstract
The mechanisms of Ni-catalyzed 3,3-dialkynylation of 2-aryl acrylamide have been investigated by using density functional theory calculations. The result shows that this reaction includes double alkynylation, which involves sequential key steps of vinylic C-H bond activation, successive oxidative addition, and reductive elimination, with the second C-H bond activation being the rate-determining step. C-H and N-H bond activation occurs via the concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism. The calculations show that no transition state exists in the first reductive elimination process, and a negative free energy barrier in the second reductive elimination process though a transition state is identified, indicating that the nickel-catalyzed vinylic C(sp2)-C(sp) bond formation does not require activation energy. Z-E isomerization is the prerequisite for the second alkynylation. In addition, our spin-flip TDDFT (SF-TDDFT) computational result discloses that the actual process of Z-E isomerization occurs on the potential energy surface of the first excited singlet state S1.

Abstract
Direct access to gem-diethynylethenes is achieved by a Ni-catalyzed 3,3-dialkynylation of 2-aryl acrylamides with 1-bromotriisopropylsilylacetylene. The preliminary mechanism study reveals that the reaction goes through a sequential double vinylic C-H bond activation with the assistance of an 8-aminoquinolinyl directing group.

Abstract
Two shape-persistent arylene ethynylene macrocycles have been designed and synthesized as scaffolds to bind the nonpolar molecule 1,4-diiodobutadiyne. Binding via halogen bonding interactions between the pyridine moieties of the macrocycle and 1,4-diiodobutadiyne is predicted by density functional theory calculations and has been demonstrated in solution by 13C NMR titrations. The binding constant for the macrocycle-monomer complex (K = 10.5 L mol-1) is much larger than for other comparable halogen bonds, strongly supporting cooperative binding of both ends of the diyne. These results demonstrate a fully inserted geometry of 1,4-diiodobutadiyne in the complex.

Abstract
A highly efficient, regioselective, and environmentally friendly method has been developed for water-mediated synthesis of 2,3,6-trisubstituted pyridines and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolines. The introduced method allows easy preparation of various polysubstituted pyridines and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolines via domino reaction of an enolizable ketone, ammonia and enones derived from different Mannich bases in mild reaction conditions. Montmorillonite K-10 promoted this one-pot three-component reaction and gave both new and known 2,3,6-trisubstituted pyridines and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolines in good yields. The reaction protocol provides a wide array of functionality in construction of polysubstituted pyridines and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolines from commercially available starting materials in easily applicable and environmentally friendly conditions.

Abstract
A double Sonogashira-type coupling reaction between aryl bromides and alkynes using a catalytic Pd/XPhos (2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2',4',6'-triisopropylbiphenyl) system was introduced as an efficient method for the synthesis of shape-persistent macrocycles (SPMs). This approach is advantageous in the synthesis of SPMs with a single pyridine unit.

Abstract
The use of three shape-persistent, conjugated macrocycles 2a–2c as ligands for self-assembly reactions is described. The macrocycles have been characterized through a combination of spectroscopic analyses and, for compounds 2b and 2c, X-ray crystallographic analysis. Whereas the reaction of 2a with the cis-Pt(II) species 3 successfully provides the porous solid 4a, the analogous reaction of 2b and 2c with 3 leads only to mixtures of products. The application of continuous-flow hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR spectroscopy to investigate the solid-state pores of macrocycles 2b and 2c and the supramolecular complex 4a as a function of temperature is described. All three species show permanent porosity upon removal of co-crystallized solvent molecules. Using trends in the 129Xe chemical shifts and temperature-dependent dynamics of Xe atoms in the solids, information is obtained on the nature of the pores in these systems. Using the 129Xe NMR data for complex 4a, the effective heat of adsorption (ΔHads) was calculated to be ~29 kJ mol–1.

Abstract
A macrocyclic host molecule having pyridine-pyridone-pyridine modules for saccharide recognition was prepared by Cu(II)-mediated oxidative homocoupling of a tandem diethynyl precursor. In CH(2)Cl(2), the host molecule associated with dodecyl β-maltoside much more strongly (K(a) = 1.4 × 10(6) M(-1)) than with octyl monohexosides (K(a) = ca. 2 × 10(3) to 1 × 10(4) M(-1)), accompanied with induced CDs. An all-pyridine macrocyclic host was also studied, and its binding strength with saccharides was weaker than that for the pyridine-pyridone-pyridine host.

Abstract
Herein we describe the synthesis and spectroscopic (infrared and UV-vis) analysis of [Cu(II)(dohpn)(L)](n+) (dohpn=imineoximic tetraazamacrocyclic ligand 2,3,9,10-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazaundecane-1,3,8,10-tetraen-11-ol-1-olate) and L=SCN(-), I(-), Cl(-) (n=0) and 4-aminopyridine (ampy), 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy), imidazole (im), 2-aminopyrazine (ampz) and water (n=1+). The following order of the Jahn-Teller stabilization energy (cm(-1)) was observed: I(-)(6452)<Cl(-)(6477)<NCS(-)(6494)<ampy(6562)<im(6614)<bipy(6685)<ampz(6739)<H(2)O(7813) and the energy of the crystal field transition was correlated with the tetragonal distortion in the structures.

Abstract
[Chemical reaction: See text] Conjugated, shape-persistent macrocycles based on [3 + 3] Schiff-base condensation are of interest for supramolecular materials. In an effort to develop new discotic liquid crystals based on these compounds, a series of macrocycles with peripheral alkoxy groups of varying length have been prepared. The synthesis and mechanism of formation have been probed by isolation of oligomeric intermediates. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of one macrocycle revealed a nonplanar, strongly hydrogen-bonded structure. To our surprise, even with very long substituents, the macrocycles were not liquid crystalline. This has been rationalized by ab initio calculations that indicate the macrocycles are undergoing rotation of the dihydroxydiiminobenzene rings that may not allow a stable discotic liquid crystalline phase. These results provide new insight into the formation and properties of these large macrocycles and may provide guidance to developing stable liquid crystalline materials in the future.

Abstract
The synthesis of a variety of shape-persistent macrocycles with either one (1a-d, 2) or two (opposing) terpyridine units (3, 4, 5a-c) and inner diameters of up to 2 nm is described. The sequences are mainly based on transition metal cross-coupling reactions and, whenever appropriate, compared with one another regarding their respective efficiency. Typical overall yields and amounts prepared range from 8% (4) to 27% (3) and 25 mg (1a) to 290 mg (1b), respectively. For solubility and processing of the targeted cycles, all precursors have already been decorated with flexible side chains (hexyloxy or hexyloxymethyl). The cycles' characterization is based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, 2D NMR spectroscopy, and/or low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their packing in the crystal is discussed in terms of both number and length of side chains. Cycle 1d was physisorbed into an ordered structure at the solution-HOPG interface and investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Abstract
Unsymmetrically substituted 1,3-butadiynes and 1,3,5-hexatriynes are synthesized in four steps from commercially available aldehydes or carboxylic acids. The key step in this process involves a Fritsch-Buttenberg-Wiechell rearrangement, in which an alkylidene carbenoid intermediate subsequently rearranges to the desired polyyne. This rearrangement proceeds under mild conditions, and it is tolerant of a range of functionalities. In general, the procedurally facile formation of the dibromoolefinic precursors, in combination with the effectiveness of the rearrangement step, makes this procedure an attractive alternative to traditional methods for di- and triyne synthesis that utilize palladium or copper catalysis.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] We describe the synthesis of alpha,alpha-dibromomethyl ynones (8) and their subsequent derivatization to vinyl acetates (10). These vinyl acetates feature a 1,1-dibromo-olefin moiety, which is readily exploited in palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira, Stille, and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions with alkynes, stannanes, and boronic acids, respectively. A novel one-pot process then directly converts the resulting vinyl acetates 11-13 to the vinyl triflate derivatives 14a-j.

Abstract
Coordination-driven self-assembly reactions have been used in the preparation of a variety of discrete supramolecular species, some of which have shown promise as synthetic receptors. Many highly ordered coordination polymers and porous networks have been prepared in a similar fashion. While a few of these solids are capable of the uptake of small organic molecules in the resultant molecular channels, the formation of truly porous structures has frequently been thwarted by lattice interpenetration. A strategy for the formation of porous solids that may circumvent this problem is based on the covalent construction of nanoscale macrocycles which, when eclipsed in the solid state, may lead to porous, tubular assemblies. We have incorporated these concepts toward the realization of a bidirectionally porous solid. The metal-directed, self-assembly of a conjugated, macrocyclic ligand provides a discrete, supramolecular entity in solution and the solid state. X-ray crystallographic analysis establishes that this assembly packs such that bidirectional channels are realized, and the incorporation of only ClCH2CH2Cl into the crystal lattice demonstrates that these channels are potentially suitable for the selective uptake of small organic guests.
