Abstract
A novel D-π-A type fluorescent probe L(NO3) for Cu (II) sensing was designed and fully characterized. The probe consists of a styryl-pyridine cation fluorescent group and a di-(2-picolyl)amine (DPA) receptor unit, which are linked by a phenyl group to form an electron donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) conjugate system, especially the introduction of a nitrate counter anion for significantly enhanced water solubility of the probe. Fluorescence titration studies of the probe L(NO3) showed a higher selectivity for Cu2+ than other metal ions, and the emission spectrum was strongly quenched upon binding. The competitive binding assay and the low detection limit (0.932 µM) showed that the probe L(NO3) had strong anti-interference ability and excellent Cu2+ detection performance. The binding ratio of probe L(NO3) and Cu2+ was determined from Job's plot to be 1:1, which is consistent with the results obtained from X-ray crystal structures. Meanwhile, the probe showed instantaneous chemical reversibility when titrated with EDTA solution, indicating potential recycling properties of the probe. In addition, the design of inexpensive fluorescent test strips can perform the on-site and real-time detection Cu2+ with a color recognition application.

Abstract
In this work, a donor-acceptor substituted aromatic system ((E)-N-((E)-3-(4 (dimethylamino)phenyl) allylidene)-4-(trifluoromethyl) benzenamine (DPATB) has been synthesized and its detailed photophysics of intramolecular charge transfer process have been explored on the basis of steady state absorption, fluorescence and time resolved spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. Large solvent dependency fluorescence spectral shift and the calculated large excited state dipole moment clearly indicate an efficient charge transfer occurring from the donor group to the acceptor moiety in the excited state. Effect on addition of acid and pH on steady state spectral properties further reveals excited state charge transfer character. Quantum chemical calculations were performed in order to study the conformation and polarity of DPATB at their ground as well as excited electronic states. The HOMO and LUMO molecular orbital pictures are obtained at DFT level using B3LYP functional and 6-311 + g(d,p) basis set which clearly support excited state intramolecular charge transfer process. The molecular electrostatic potential maps for the optimized ground state, donor twisted and acceptor twisted geometry shed insight on the electrostatic potential and charge distribution in a system which gives information about the reacting site of the probe and nature of the reaction. In this work, detailed photophysics of excited state intramolecular charge transfer process in donor-acceptor system (DPATB) was evaluated using steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. Large solvent dependency fluorescence spectral shift and the calculated large excited state dipole moment clearly indicate an efficient charge transfer occurring in DPATB. Molecular orbital pictures as obtained from DFT based computational analysis reveals a significant change in the distribution of electron density upon transition from HOMO to LUMO which confirms an ICT process occurring from the donor group to the acceptor moiety in the excited state.

Abstract
A para-N-phenyl-amino group significantly increases the fluorescence quantum yield of N-phenyl-4-aminostilbene by the "amino conjugation effect", but, in contrast, a para-amino group in the para-amino analogue (p-ABDI) of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore makes p-ABDI non-fluorescent because the coherent photo-induced intramolecular charge transfer reduces the barrier of the Z/E-photoisomerization.

Abstract
A stilbene-based compound (1) has been prepared and was highly selective for the detection of cyanide anion in aqueous media even in the presence of other anions, such as F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), ClO(4)(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), HSO(4)(-), NO(3)(-), and CH(3)CO(2)(-). A noticeable change in the color of the solution, along with a prominent fluorescence enhancement, was observed upon the addition of cyanide. The color change was observed upon the nucleophilic addition of the cyanide anion to the electron-deficient cyanoacrylate group of 1. The spectral changes induced by the reaction were analyzed by comparison with two model compounds, such as compound 2 with dimethyl substituents and compound 3 without a cyanoacrylate group. An intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) mechanism played a key role in the sensing properties, and the mechanism was supported by DFT/TDDFT calculations.

Abstract
A new fluoroionophore [E-4,4'-di(N-(2-pyridyl)amino)stilbene, E1] with a donor-acceptor-donor framework, which features a central stilbene (acceptor) fluorophore and two terminal pyridylamino (donor) ionophores, is reported. The probe displays an ultrasensitive fluorescence quenching response toward Hg(2+) in H(2)O/THF. Coordination of Hg(2+) to E1 affords a 2:1 complex, enabling the detection of Hg(2+) at a concentration as low as 4.4 × 10(-14) M. The interactions between the two species have been thoroughly characterized with UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations provide further insights into the nature of the fluorescence quenching response. In contrast, a fluorescent molecule with the donor-acceptor architecture, E-4-(N-(2-pyridyl)amino)stilbene (E4), exhibits a greatly attenuated fluorescence quenching response toward Hg(2+).

Abstract
Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior of trans-ethyl p-(dimethylamino) cinamate (EDAC) and 4-(dimethylamino) cinnamic acid (DMACA) were studied by steady state absorption and emission, picosecond time-resolved fluorescence experiments in various pure and mixed solvent systems. The large fluorescence spectral shift in more polar solvents indicates an efficient charge transfer from the donor site to the acceptor moiety in the excited state compared to the ground state. The energy for 0,0 transition (nu(0,0)) for EDAC shows very good linear correlation with static solvent dielectric property; however, fluorescence emission maximum, stokes shift and fluorescence quantum yield show significant deviation from linearity in polar protic solvents, indicating a large contribution of solvent hydrogen bonding on the excited state relaxation mechanism. A quantitative estimation of contribution from different solvatochromic parameters was made using linear free energy relationship based on Kamlet-Taft equation.

Abstract
A new copper(II) fluorescent sensor 5,10,15,20-tetra((p-N,N-bis(2-pyridyl)amino)phenyl)porphyrin zinc (1) has been designed and synthesized by the Ullmann-type condensation of bromoporphyrin zinc with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (dpa) under copper powder as a catalyst as well as with K2CO3 as the base in a DMF solution. It consists of two separately functional moieties: the zinc porphyrin performs as a fluorophore, and the dpa-linked-to-zinc porphyrin acts as a selected binding site for metal ions. It displays a high selectivity and antidisturbance for the Cu2+ ion among the metal ions examined (Na+, Mg2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Fe3+) and exhibits fluorescence quenching upon the binding of the Cu2+ ion with an "on-off"-type fluoroionophoric switching property. The detection limit is found to be 3.3 x 10(-7) M (3s blank) for Cu2+ ion in methanol solution, and its fluorescence can be revived by the addition of EDTA disodium solution. The design strategy and remarkable photophysical properties of sensor 1 help to extend the development of fluorescent sensors for metal ions.

Abstract
A pyrene-terpyridine-Zn conjugate has been synthesized and characterized, where Zn2+ acts as an electron acceptor to enhance molecular ICT with a large emission red-shift (>100 nm). It showed a ratiometric fluorescence change upon addition of phosphate anions in buffered aqueous solution. The selective response to phosphates or pyrophosphates involved ICT and ligand competition processes.

Abstract
The use of sunscreen preparations is recently growing and their efficacy and safety must be taken into account since they are applied on the skin frequently and for many hours. Exposition to sunlight, in fact, can cause sunscreen photodegradation and determine their decrease in UV protection often with the occurrence of allergic and/or toxic degradation products. A high photostability is hence very important for their effectiveness and safety. The aim of this work is to obtain new sunscreen formulations stabilized by intercalating PABA, within the lamellar structures of two kinds of hydrotalcite. PABA was chosen as model sunscreen because of its high photoinstability and photosensitizing properties that nowadays bar its utilization. Both intercalated products showed an increased protection range and, in one case, an improved sunscreen photostability. Sunscreen release from creams containing intercalated or free PABA was evaluated as well. The very low or negligible sunscreen release, obtained from the intercalated product loaded formulations, resulted in a lack of a close contact between skin and filter with the consequence that cutaneous reactions and allergy problems are eliminated. The use of these materials resulted in a good strategic technological approach in order to increase efficacy and safety of solar products.

Abstract
Synthesis of the 2,2'-dipyridylamine derivatives di-2-pyridylaminomethylbenzene 1, 1,2-bis(di-2-pyridylaminomethyl)benzene 2, 1,3-bis(di-2-pyridylaminomethyl)benzene 3, 2,6-bis(di-2-pyridylaminomethyl)pyridine 4, 1,4-bis(di-2-pyridylaminomethyl)benzene 5, and 1,3,5-tris(di-2-pyridylaminomethyl)benzene 6 are reported together with the single-crystal X-ray structures of 2, 3, and 5. Reaction of individual salts of the type AgX (where X = NO(3)(-), PF(6)(-), ClO(4)(-), or BF(4)(-)) with the above ligands has led to the isolation of thirteen Ag(I) complexes, nine of which have also been characterised by X-ray diffraction. In part, the inherent flexibility of the respective ligands has resulted in the adoption of a range of coordination arrangements. A series of liquid-liquid (H(2)O/CHCl(3)) extraction experiments of Ag(I) with varying concentrations of 1-6 in the organic phase have been undertaken, with the counter ion in the aqueous phase being respectively picrate, perchlorate and nitrate. In general, extraction efficiencies for a given ionophore followed the Hofmeister order of picrate > perchlorate > nitrate; in each case the tris-dpa derivative 6 acting as the most efficient extractant of the six systems investigated. Competitive seven-metal bulk membrane transport experiments (H(2)O/CHCl(3)/H(2)O) employing the above ligands as the ionophore in the organic phase and equimolar concentrations of Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ag(I) in the aqueous source phase were also undertaken, with transport occurring against a pH gradient. Under the conditions employed 1 and 5 yielded negligible transport of any of the metals present in the source phase while sole transport selectivity for Ag(I) was observed for 2-4 and 6.
