Derivation of Force Field Parameters for SnO2−H2O Surface Systems from Plane-Wave Density Functional Theory Calculations

Low-loss contacts on textured substrates for inverted perovskite solar cells

Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) promise enhanced operating stability compared to their normal-structure counterparts1-3. To improve efficiency further, it is crucial to combine effective light management with low interfacial losses4,5. Here we develop a conformal self-assembled monolayer (SAM) as the hole-selective contact on light-managing textured substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that cluster formation during phosphonic acid adsorption leads to incomplete SAM coverage. We devise a co-adsorbent strategy that disassembles high-order clusters, thus homogenizing the distribution of phosphonic acid molecules, and thereby minimizing interfacial recombination and improving electronic structures. We report a laboratory-measured power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.3% and a certified quasi-steady-state PCE of 24.8% for inverted PSCs, with a photocurrent approaching 95% of the Shockley-Queisser maximum. An encapsulated device having a PCE of 24.6% at room temperature retains 95% of its peak performance when stressed at 65 °C and 50% relative humidity following more than 1,000 h of maximum power point tracking under 1 sun illumination. This represents one of the most stable PSCs subjected to accelerated ageing: achieved with a PCE surpassing 24%. The engineering of phosphonic acid adsorption on textured substrates offers a promising avenue for efficient and stable PSCs. It is also anticipated to benefit other optoelectronic devices that require light management.

Interface Interaction of Benzohydroxamic Acid with Lead Ions on Oxide Mineral Surfaces: A Coordination Mechanism Study

Surface coordination chemistry is important in areas such as adsorption, separation, and catalysts. In this work, surface coordination interactions of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) with the lead ion [Pb(II)] adsorbed on the cassiterite surface have been investigated by first-principles calculations due to its great significance in froth flotation. Cluster calculations show that BHA possesses the weakest chelation with Pb(II) due to the electron withdrawal ability of the benzyl ring in comparison with other hydroxamic acids. Pb(II) thermodynamically prefers to react with the cassiterite surface rather than BHA. On the other hand, the partial density of states and the atomic overlap populations have consistently verified that the adsorption of BHA results in a better symmetry in electron densities than the hydrated Pb(II). The electron density maps and the electronic localization functions have further visualized the rearrangement of the 6s² lone pair around the lead atom. It can be concluded that the surface coordination mechanisms of Pb(II) on oxide minerals can be attributed to the coordination ability of BHA and the unique electronic structure of Pb(II), which accounts for the reported better flotation performance of the pre-assemble strategy than the pre-activating approach. This work sheds some new light on the unique coordination activation mechanism of metal ions on oxide mineral surfaces. It should be instructive to design and screen new environment-friendly flotation reagents and flotation flowsheets.

Effects of Hydration on the Adsorption of Benzohydroxamic Acid on the Lead-Ion-Activated Cassiterite Surface: A DFT Study

The strategy of enhancing the surface activity by preadsorption of metal ions (surface activation) is an effective way to promote the adsorption of surfactant on surfaces, which is very important in surface process engineering. However, the adsorption mechanism of surfactant (collector) on the surface preadsorbed by metal ions in the explicit solution phase is still poorly understood. Herein, the effects of hydration on the adsorption of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) onto the oxide mineral surface before and after lead-ion activation are investigated by first-principles calculations, owing to its importance in the field of flotation. The results show that the direct adsorption of BHA on the hydrated surface is not thermodynamically allowed in the absence of metal ions. However, the adsorption of BHA onto the lead-ion-activated surface possesses a very low barrier and a very negative reaction energy difference, indicating that the adsorption of BHA on hydrated Pb²⁺ at cassiterite surface is very favorable in both thermodynamics and kinetics. In addition, the adsorption of BHA results in the dehydration of hydrated Pb²⁺. More interestingly, the surface hydroxyl groups could participate in and may promote the coordination adsorption through proton transfer. This work sheds some new lights on understanding the roles of interfacial water and the mechanisms of metal-ion surface activation.

Computing Surface Acidity Constants of Proton Hopping Groups from Density Functional Theory-Based Molecular Dynamics: Application to the SnO2(110)/H2O Interface

Proton transfer at metal oxide/water interfaces plays an important role in electrochemistry, geochemistry, and environmental science. The key thermodynamic quantity to characterize this process is the surface acidity constant. An ab initio method that combines density functional theory-based molecular dynamics (DFTMD) and free energy perturbation theory has been established for computing surface acidity constants. However, it involves a reversible proton insertion procedure in which frequent proton hopping, e.g., for strong bases and some oxide surfaces (e.g., SnO₂), can cause instability issues in electronic structure calculation. In the original implementation, harmonic restraining potentials are imposed on all O-H bonds (denoted by the V_rH scheme) to prevent proton hopping and thus may not be applicable for systems involving spontaneous proton hopping. In this work, we introduce an improved restraining scheme with a repulsive potential V_rep to compute the surface acidities of systems in which proton hopping is spontaneous and fast. In this V_rep scheme, a Buckingham-type repulsive potential V_rep is applied between the deprotonation site and all other protons in DFTMD simulations. We first verify the V_rep scheme by calculating the pK_a values of H₂O and aqueous HS^- solution (i.e., strong conjugate bases) and then apply it to the SnO₂(110)/H₂O interface. It is found that the V_rep scheme leads to a prediction of the point of zero charge (PZC) of 4.6, which agrees well with experiment. The intrinsic individual pK_a values of the terminal five-coordinated Sn site (Sn_5cOH₂) and bridge oxygen site (Sn₂O_brH⁺) are 4.4 and 4.7, respectively, both being almost the same as the PZC. The similarity of the two pK_a values indicates that dissociation of terminal water has almost zero free energy at this proton hopping interface (i.e., partial water dissociation), as expected from the acid-base equilibrium on SnO₂.

Electrostrictive Cavitation in Water Induced by a SnO2 Nanoparticle

Cavitation phenomenon in dielectric fluids has been a recent topic of interest in theory and experiment. We study a dielectric fluid-nanoparticle system subjected to an external electric field using molecular dynamics simulations. Electric fields ranging from 0.042 to 0.25 V/Å are applied to a water and tin dioxide system. Cavitation is observed in simulations with both SPC/E water and the hydrogen bonding polarizable model. The cavitation onset time displays a stretched exponential relaxation response with respect to the applied electric field with an exponent β = 0.423 ± 0.08. This is in accordance with the exact theoretical value for systems with long-ranged forces. Cavity growth rates are divided into two phases, a spherical growth phase and a cylindrical one. Both are reported as a function of the applied electric field. The structure of the electric field is analyzed both spatially and temporally.

Crude-Oil-Repellent Membranes by Atomic Layer Deposition: Oxide Interface Engineering

Crude oil fouling on membrane surfaces is a persistent, crippling challenge in oil spill remediation and oilfield wastewater treatment. In this research, we present how a nanosized oxide coating can profoundly affect the anti-crude-oil property of membrane materials. Select oxide coatings with a thickness of ∼10 nm are deposited conformally on common polymer membrane surfaces by atomic layer deposition to significantly mitigate fouling during filtration processes. TiO₂- and SnO₂-coated membranes exhibited far greater anti-crude-oil performance than ZnO- and Al₂O₃-coated ones. Tightly bound hydration layers play a crucial role in protecting the surface from crude oil adhesion, as revealed by molecular dynamics simulations. This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate crude-oil-resistant membranes with negligible impact on membrane structure, and also demonstrates that, contrary to common belief, excellent crude oil resistance can be achieved easily without implementation of sophisticated, hierarchical structures.

Solvent Effects on the Dynamic Polarizability and Raman Response of Molecule-Metal Oxide Hybrid Clusters

Currently, there is considerable interest in the properties of semiconducting metal oxide nanoparticle substrates because of their utility in surface-enhanced Raman scattering, dye-sensitized solar cells, and photocatalysis. While the enhancement of Raman activities of molecules adsorbed on these nanoparticles is due to a large increase in the polarizability, because of charge transfer from the molecule to the semiconducting nanoparticle, little is known about the factors responsible for modulating the polarizability, particularly the influence of the solvent. Consequently, we have carried out Monte Carlo simulations of several hybrids to study the solvent effect on the dynamic polarizabilities and electronic spectra. Our results indicate that the presence of the solvent induces a shift and an increase in the polarization response that is dependent on the identity of the hybrid. The observed enhancement can be attributed to both the resonant character of the excitation and the participation of the solvent in the charge redistribution. The methodology employed in this work could be very valuable in both identifying and developing metal oxides as novel molecular sensors.

Kinetic characterization of Ca²⁺-ATPase (SERCA1) inhibition by tri-n-butyltin(IV) chloride. A docking conformation proposal

Organotin compounds, such as tri-n-butyltin(IV) chloride (TBT), are widespread toxicants which disrupt different functions in living organisms. TBT interacts with lipid membranes and membrane proteins. The inhibition of the calcium ATPase from sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes by TBT was studied. It was found that the ATPase inhibition could not be reverted in a large time scale; moreover, an excess of TBT over enzyme did not fully inhibit the ATPase activity; therefore, it was concluded that TBT irreversibly inhibits the enzyme, and this inhibition is accompanied by a decrease in the effective TBT concentration. The residual ATP hydrolysis activity was measured at different TBT concentrations with time, and the protective effect of different calcium concentrations on the TBT inhibition was also determined. The simplest kinetic mechanism to successfully explain all the observations and the kinetic behavior was found to be a single irreversible step of the inhibitor binding to the enzyme accompanied with a first-order inhibitor inactivation. A fluorescence study of fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate-labeled enzyme revealed that TBT binding to the enzyme entails a conformational change related to the high- to low-affinity calcium-binding state transition (E1 to E2 transition), resembling the conformational change induced by vanadate linked to the formation of E2 V complex from E1 state. A docking study allowed us to propose a binding pocket for TBT in the membrane region of E1 close to the high-affinity calcium-binding sites, as well as to define the interactions with amino acid residues interfering with calcium sites occupancy.

Faster proton transfer dynamics of water on SnO2 compared to TiO2

Proton jump processes in the hydration layer on the iso-structural TiO(2) rutile (110) and SnO(2) cassiterite (110) surfaces were studied with density functional theory molecular dynamics. We find that the proton jump rate is more than three times faster on cassiterite compared with rutile. A local analysis based on the correlation between the stretching band of the O-H vibrations and the strength of H-bonds indicates that the faster proton jump activity on cassiterite is produced by a stronger H-bond formation between the surface and the hydration layer above the surface. The origin of the increased H-bond strength on cassiterite is a combined effect of stronger covalent bonding and stronger electrostatic interactions due to differences of its electronic structure. The bridging oxygens form the strongest H-bonds between the surface and the hydration layer. This higher proton jump rate is likely to affect reactivity and catalytic activity on the surface. A better understanding of its origins will enable methods to control these rates.

Comparison of cation adsorption by isostructural rutile and cassiterite

Macroscopic net proton charging curves for powdered rutile and cassiterite specimens with the (110) crystal face predominant, as a function of pH in RbCl and NaCl solutions, trace SrCl(2) in NaCl, and trace ZnCl(2) in NaCl and Na Triflate solutions, are compared to corresponding molecular-level information obtained from static DFT optimizations and classical MD simulations, as well as synchrotron X-ray methods. The similarities and differences in the macroscopic charging behavior of rutile and cassiterite largely reflect the cation binding modes observed at the molecular level. Cation adsorption is primarily inner-sphere on both isostructural (110) surfaces, despite predictions that outer-sphere binding should predominate on low bulk dielectric constant oxides such as cassiterite (ε(bulk) ≈ 11). Inner-sphere adsorption is also significant for Rb(+) and Na(+) on neutral surfaces, whereas Cl(-) binding is predominately outer-sphere. As negative surface charge increases, relatively more Rb(+), Na(+), and especially Sr(2+) are bound in highly desolvated tetradentate fashion on the rutile (110) surface, largely accounting for enhanced negative charge development relative to cassiterite. Charging curves in the presence of Zn(2+) are very steep but similar for both oxides, reflective of Zn(2+) hydrolysis (and accompanying proton release) during the adsorption process, and the similar binding modes for ZnOH(+) on both surfaces. These results suggest that differences in cation adsorption between high and low bulk dielectric constant oxides are more subtly related to the relative degree of cation desolvation accompanying inner-sphere binding (i.e., more tetradentate binding on rutile), rather than distinct inner- and outer-sphere adsorption modes. Cation desolvation may be favored at the rutile (110) surface in part because inner-sphere water molecules are bound further from and less tightly than on the cassiterite (110) surface. Hence, their removal upon inner-sphere cation binding is relatively more favorable.

Charging properties of cassiterite (alpha-SnO(2)) surfaces in NaCl and RbCl ionic media

The acid-base properties of cassiterite (alpha-SnO2) surfaces at 10-50 degrees C were studied using potentiometric titrations of powder suspensions in aqueous NaCl and RbCl media. The proton sorption isotherms exhibited common intersection points in the pH range of 4.0-4.5 under all conditions, and the magnitude of charging was similar but not identical in NaCl and RbCl. The hydrogen bonding configuration at the oxide-water interface, obtained from classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, was analyzed in detail, and the results were explicitly incorporated in calculations of protonation constants for the reactive surface sites using the revised MUSIC model. The calculations indicated that the terminal SnOH2 group is more acidic than the bridging Sn2OH group, with protonation constants (log KH) of 3.60 and 5.13 at 25 degrees C, respectively. This is contrary to the situation on the isostructural alpha-TiO2 (rutile), apparently because of the difference in electronegativity between Ti and Sn. MD simulations and speciation calculations indicated considerable differences in the speciation of Na+ and Rb+, despite the similarities in overall charging. Adsorbed sodium ions are almost exclusively found in bidentate surface complexes, whereas adsorbed rubidium ions form comparable numbers of bidentate and tetradentate complexes. Also, the distribution of adsorbed Na+ between the different complexes shows a considerable dependence on the surface charge density (pH), whereas the distribution of adsorbed Rb+ is almost independent of pH. A surface complexation model (SCM) capable of accurately describing both the measured surface charge and the MD-predicted speciation of adsorbed Na+/Rb+ was formulated. According to the SCM, the deprotonated terminal group (SnOH(-0.40)) and the protonated bridging group (Sn2OH+0.36) dominate the surface speciation over the entire pH range of this study (2.7-10). The complexation of medium cations increases significantly with increasing negative surface charge, and at pH 10, roughly 40% of the terminal sites are predicted to form cation complexes, whereas anion complexation is minor throughout the studied pH range.

Periodic density functional theory calculations of bulk and the (010) surface of goethite

BACKGROUND

Goethite is a common and reactive mineral in the environment. The transport of contaminants and anaerobic respiration of microbes are significantly affected by adsorption and reduction reactions involving goethite. An understanding of the mineral-water interface of goethite is critical for determining the molecular-scale mechanisms of adsorption and reduction reactions. In this study, periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the mineral goethite and its (010) surface, using the Vienna Ab Initio Simulation Package (VASP).

RESULTS

Calculations of the bulk mineral structure accurately reproduced the observed crystal structure and vibrational frequencies, suggesting that this computational methodology was suitable for modeling the goethite-water interface. Energy-minimized structures of bare, hydrated (one H2O layer) and solvated (three H2O layers) (010) surfaces were calculated for 1 x 1 and 3 x 3 unit cell slabs. A good correlation between the calculated and observed vibrational frequencies was found for the 1 x 1 solvated surface. However, differences between the 1 x 1 and 3 x 3 slab calculations indicated that larger models may be necessary to simulate the relaxation of water at the interface. Comparison of two hydrated surfaces with molecularly and dissociatively adsorbed H2O showed a significantly lower potential energy for the former.

CONCLUSION

Surface Fe-O and (Fe)O-H bond lengths are reported that may be useful in surface complexation models (SCM) of the goethite (010) surface. These bond lengths were found to change significantly as a function of solvation (i.e., addition of two extra H2O layers above the surface), indicating that this parameter should be carefully considered in future SCM studies of metal oxide-water interfaces.

Electric double layer at metal oxide surfaces: static properties of the cassiterite-water interface

The structure of water at the (110) surface of cassiterite (alpha-SnO2) at ambient conditions was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray crystal truncation rod experiments and interpreted with the help of the revised MUSIC model of surface protonation. The interactions of the metal oxide in the simulations were described by a recently developed classical force field based on the SPC/E model of water. Two extreme cases of completely hydroxylated and nonhydroxylated surfaces were considered along with a mixed surface with 50% dissociation. To study the dependence of the surface properties on pH, neutral and negatively charged variants of the surfaces were constructed. Axial and lateral density distributions of water for different types of surfaces were compared to each other and to experimental axial density distributions found by X-ray experiments. Although significant differences were found between the structures of the studied interfaces, the axial distances between Sn and O atoms are very similar and therefore could not be clearly distinguished by the diffraction technique. The explanation of structures observed in the density distributions was provided by a detailed analysis of hydrogen bonding in the interfacial region. It revealed qualitatively different hydrating patterns formed at neutral hydroxylated and nonhydroxylated surfaces and suggested a preference for the dissociative adsorption of water. At negatively charged surfaces, however, the situation can be reversed by the electric field stabilizing a hydrogen bond network similar to that found at the neutral nonhydroxylated surface. Comparison with previously studied rutile (alpha-TiO2) surfaces provided insight into the differences between the hydration of these two metal oxides, and an important role was ascribed to their different lattice parameters. A link to macroscopic properties was provided by the revised MUSIC surface protonation model. Explicit use of the Sn-O bond lengths based on ab initio calculations and H-bond configurations as inputs led to the prediction of a pH of zero net-proton induced surface charge (pHpzc) that agrees very well with those determined experimentally (about 4.4 at 298 K).
