Abstract
Stable boroxine-amine adducts comprising dative B←N bond(s) were prepared by mechanochemically-induced reactions of phenylboronic acid (PBA) and amines (pyridine, DMAP, 1H-pyrazole, piperidine, DABCO, hexamethylenetetramine, or 4,4'-bipyridine). In-situ Raman monitoring, ex-situ PXRD and DFT calculations were used for product identification. Stoichiometry of the product (3 : 1, 3 : 2 or 6 : 1 adduct) was controlled by the amine structure and the molar ratio of the reactants. The 1 : 2 H-bonded assembly of PBA and 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) was confirmed as an intermediate in the adduct formation for bpy. Competitive binding experiments indicated that the exchange of the amines in the 3 : 1 adducts follows the computed adduct stabilities that increase with the amine basicity. Following the DFT prediction, the first adduct with two different amines, DMAP and pip, bound to one boroxine moiety was isolated and structurally characterized. Results show that calculations can be used to predict possible and preferred product(s) and their spectral characteristics.

Abstract
Growing environmental awareness imposes on polymer scientists the development of novel materials that show a longer lifetime and that can be easily recycled. These challenges were largely met by vitrimers, a new class of polymers that merges properties of thermoplastics and thermosets. This is achieved by the incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds into the polymer structure, which provides high stability at the service temperature, but enables the processing at elevated temperatures. Numerous types of dynamic covalent bonds have been utilized for the synthesis of vitrimers. Amongst them, boronic acid-based linkages, namely boronic acid esters and boroxines, are distinguished by their quick exchange kinetics and the possibility of easy application in various polymer systems, from commercial thermoplastics to low molecular weight thermosetting resins. This review covers the development of dynamic cross-links. This review is aimed at providing the state of the art in the utilization of boronic species for the synthesis of covalent adaptable networks. We mainly focus on the synthetic aspects of boronic linkages-based vitrimers construction. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are provided.

Abstract
Vitrimers endow cross-linked polymers with malleability and reprocessability via exchange reactions. However, designing of reprocessable, shape-memory polymer materials with high strength via a catalyst-free method remains a challenge under mild conditions. Here, we propose a facile strategy to address this dilemma by introducing the exchangeable imine bond and N-coordinated boroxine into a polybutadiene (PB)-based network. Specifically, PB grafted with 2-aminoethanethiol is reacted with the formyl group of phenylboronic acid and dehydrated to form a dual-dynamic covalently cross-linked network at room temperature. The dynamic network draws on the advantage of imine (toughness) and N-coordinated boroxine (strength), making the PB-based materials exhibit favorable malleability, mechanical property, reprocessability, and thermal-induced shape-memory behavior. We can obtain customized high mechanical properties by tuning the cross-linking density, and the tensile strength reaches a high value (12.35 MPa) without fillers or any other additives. Meanwhile, the unique network framework makes the material recycle over several times without sacrificing its property. This work presents a facile and effective approach to achieve a multifunctional polymer with customized attributes. Besides, this strategy can recycle end-of-life rubber to alleviate environmental pollution and provide inspiration for fabricating targeted materials by uniting the dynamic covalent or noncovalent bonds.

Abstract
The hydrogen-bonding activation for 66 organocatalysts has been quantified using a 31P NMR binding experiment with triethylphosphine oxide (TEPO). Diverse structural classes, including phenols, diols, silanols, carboxylic acids, boronic acids, and phosphoric acids, were examined with a variety of steric and electronic modifications to understand how the structure and secondary effects contribute to hydrogen-bonding ability and catalysis. Hammett plots demonstrate high correlation for the Δδ 31P NMR shift to Hammett parameters, establishing the ability of TEPO binding to predict electronic trends. Upon correlation to catalytic activity in a Friedel-Crafts addition reaction, data demonstrate that 31P NMR shifts correlate to catalytic activity better than p Ka values. Boronic acids were investigated, and 31P NMR binding experiments predicted strong hydrogen-bonding ability, for which catalytic activity was confirmed, resulting in the greatest rate enhancement observed in the Friedel-Crafts addition of all organocatalysts studied. A detailed investigation supports that boronic acid activation proceeds through hydrogen-bonding interactions and not coordination with the Lewis acidic boron center. Using 31P NMR spectroscopy offers a simple and rapid tool to quantify and predict hydrogen-bonding abilities for the design and applications of new organocatalysts and supramolecular synthons.

Abstract
Phenylboronic acids (PBAs) are an important class of compounds with diverse applications in synthetic, biological, medicinal, and materials chemistry. In this investigation we report structural and thermochemical parameters for several monosubstituted ortho, meta, and para PBAs, R-B(OH)2 (R = C6H5, C6H4CH3, C6H4NH2, C6H4OH, and C6H4F). Equilibrium geometries of all the PBAs discussed in this article were obtained using second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) with the Dunning-Woon aug-cc-pVDZ basis set; heats of formation (HOF) were calculated at the Gaussian-3 (G3) level of theory. The endo-exo conformers of all the positional isomers of these PBAs were lowest in energy. Using HOF for the monosubstituted PBAs calculated at the G3 level of theory, in conjunction with the experimental HOF for benzene, toluene, aniline, phenol, and fluorobenzene, the values of [Formula: see text] for the transfer processes C6H6 + C6H4X-B(OH)2 → C6H5X + C6H5-B(OH)2 (X = CH3, NH2, OH, and F) are found to be in good agreement with values of [Formula: see text] calculated at the MP2(FC)/aug-cc-pVTZ//MP2(FC)/aug-cc-pVTZ computational level; the bonding in the reactants and products for these transfer reactions are well-matched and thermochemical calculations at this level are expected to be very accurate, providing checks on the G3 HOF calculations.

Abstract
The solution phase self-assembly of boronate esters, diazaboroles, oxathiaboroles, and dithiaboroles from the condensation of arylboronic acids with aromatic diol, diamine, hydroxythiol, and dithiol compounds in chloroform has been investigated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy and computational methods. Six arylboronic acids were included in the investigations with each boronic acid varying in the substituent at its 4-position. Both computational and experimental results show that the para-substituent of the arylboronic acid does not significantly influence the favorability of forming a condensation product with a given organic donor. The type of donor, however, greatly influences the favorability of self-assembly. (1)H NMR spectroscopy indicates that condensation reactions between arylboronic acids and catechol to give boronate esters are the most favored thermodynamically, followed by diazaborole formation. Computational investigations support this conclusion. Neither oxathiaboroles nor dithiaboroles form spontaneously at equilibrium in chloroform at room temperature. Computational results suggest that the effect of borylation on the frontier orbitals of each donor helps to explain differences in the favorability of their condensation reactions with arylboronic acids. The results can inform the use of boronic acids as they are increasingly utilized in the dynamic self-assembly of organic materials and as components in dynamic combinatorial libraries.

Abstract
Boronic acids (R-B(OH)2) and their boroxine (R3B3O3) dehydration products have emerged as important classes of compounds with a multitude of diverse applications. However, the available heats of formation for these compounds are not always as accurate as would be required for further use. In this study the heats of formation at 298.15 K of R-B(OH)2 and R3B3O3 (R = H, Li, HBe, H2B, H3C, H2N, HO, F, and Cl) have been calculated at the G2, G3[G3B3], and G4 levels of theory and used to determine the enthalpy changes for the dehydration reactions: 3 R-B(OH)2 → R3B3O3 + 3 H2O; comparisons are made with other rigorous levels of theory, e.g. CBS-Q[CBS-QB3] and W1U, as well as with experimental values wherever possible. Enthalpy changes for the dehydration reactions have also been calculated using second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) with the Dunning-Woon correlation-consistent aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets, and B3LYP density functional theory with the 6-311++G(2df,2pd) basis set. With the exception of H2N-B(OH)2, the dehydration reactions are consistently predicted to be exothermic. Our results provide a cautionary note for the use of the B3LYP functional in the calculation of structures and energies of boronic acids and boroxines. Where comparisons could be made, the G4 and W1U predictions for the heats of formation of these boron compounds differ significantly.

Abstract
Boroxines are the six-membered cyclotrimeric dehydration products of organoboronic acids, 3R–B(OH)2 → R3B3O3 + 3H2O, and in recent years have emerged as a useful class of organoboron molecules with applications in organic synthesis both as reagents and catalysts, as structural components in boronic-acid-derived pharmaceutical agents, and as anion acceptors and electrolyte additives for battery materials [Korich, A. L.; Iovine, P. M. Dalton Trans. 2010, 39, 1423−1431]. Second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory, in conjunction with the Dunning–Woon correlation-consistent cc-pVDZ, aug-cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets, was used to investigate the structures and relative energies of the endo–exo, anti, and syn conformers of the aliphatic boronic acids R–B(OH)2 (R = H, H3C, H2N, HO, and F), as well as the thermodynamics of their boroxine formation; single-point calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVQZ, MP2/aug-cc-pV5Z, and CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ levels using the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ optimized geometries were also performed in selected cases. The endo–exo conformer was generally lowest in energy in vacuo, as well as in PCM and CPCM models of aqueous and carbon tetrachloride media. The values of ΔH(298)(0) for boroxine formation via dehydration from the endo–exo conformers of these aliphatic boronic acids ranged from −2.9 for (H2N)3B3O3 to +12.2 kcal/mol for H3B3O3 at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level in vacuo; for H3B3O3, the corresponding values in PCM/UFF implicit carbon tetrachloride and aqueous media were +11.2 and +9.8 kcal/mol, respectively. On the basis of our calculations, we recommend that ΔHf(298K) for boroxine listed in the JANAF compilation needs to be revised from −290.0 to approximately −277.0 kcal/mol.

Abstract
Density functional theory (B3LYP//6-311+G*) calculations including Poisson-Boltzmann implicit solvent were applied to study the formation of the trimethylboroxine.amine adduct with respect to methylboronic acid monomers and free amine in solution. Potential intermediates and transition states between intermediates were calculated to assess the thermodynamic and kinetic factors controlling this transformation. Our calculations suggest that the rate-determining steps are condensation reactions to form dimers and trimers, and closure of the boroxine ring. Fast amine exchange is expected throughout the transformation, and the most-stable intermediate is a dimer.amine adduct. Using our calculated barriers for the methyl system as a template, we assess the conversion of phenylboronic acid to the triphenylboroxine.amine adduct and find that the pathway is most likely similar, except that the transformation is thermodynamically and kinetically more favored for the phenyl system in the presence of pyridine.

Abstract
Density functional theory (B3LYP//6-311+G) calculations including Poisson-Boltzmann implicit solvent and NMR were used to study the formation of a series of para-substituted triphenylboroxine.amine adducts with respect to their phenylboronic acid monomers and free amine in solution. Our calculations suggest that the intermediate prior to forming trimer.amine is a dimer.amine adduct. Formation of dimer.amine can proceed via two pathways. Electron-donating substituents favor dimerization of two monomers before addition of the amine, and electron-withdrawing substituents favor formation of a monomer.amine adduct before addition of the second monomer. We also find that pi-electron acceptors destabilize formation of the dimer and trimer with respect to its monomers. Electron-withdrawing substituents favor adduct formation. Adduct formation is enthalpically stabilized by increasing the polarity of the solvent but differential solubility of the monomer compared to trimer.amine also has an effect on the equilibrium constant.
