Phase Transition of 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide Thin Films on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite

Surface Analyses of PVDF/NMP/[EMIM][TFSI] Solid Polymer Electrolyte

Thermal treatment conditions of solid polymer polymer electrolyte (SPE) were studied with respect to their impact on the surface morphology, phase composition and chemical composition of an imidazolium ionic-liquid-based SPE, namely PVDF/NMP/[EMIM][TFSI] electrolyte. These investigations were done using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy. A thoroughly mixed blend of polymer matrix, ionic liquid and solvent was deposited on a ceramic substrate and was kept at a certain temperature for a specific time in order to achieve varying crystallinity. The morphology of all the electrolytes consists of spherulites whose average diameter increases with solvent evaporation rate. Raman mapping shows that these spherulites have a semicrystalline structure and the area between them is an amorphous region. Analysis of FTIR spectra as well as Raman spectroscopy showed that the β-phase becomes dominant over other phases, while DSC technique indicated decrease of crystallinity as the solvent evaporation rate increases. XPS and ToF-SIMS indicated that the chemical composition of the surface of the SPE samples with the highest solvent evaporation rate approaches the composition of the ionic liquid.

Stability and Exchange Processes in Ionic Liquid/Porphyrin Composite Films on Metal Surfaces

In light of increasing interest in the development of organic-organic multicomponent heterostructures on metals, this molecular-scale study investigates prototypical composite systems of ultrathin porphyrin and ionic liquid (IL) films on metallic supports under well-defined ultrahigh vacuum conditions. By means of angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we investigated the adsorption, stability, and thermal exchange of the resulting films after sequential physical vapor deposition of the free-base porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin, 2H-TPP, and the IL 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C₈C₁Im][PF₆], on Ag(111) and Au(111). 2H-TPP shows two-dimensional growth of up to two closed molecular layers on Ag(111) and Au(111) and three-dimensional island growth for thicker films. IL films on top of a monolayer of 2H-TPP exhibit Stranski-Krastanov-like growth and are stable up to 385 K. The 2H-TPP layer leads to destabilization of the IL films, compared to the IL in direct contact with the bare metals, by inhibiting the specific adsorption of the ions on the metal surfaces. When the porphyrin is deposited on top of [C₈C₁Im][PF₆] at low temperature, the 2H-TPP molecules adsorb on top of the IL film at first but replace the IL at the IL/metal interfaces upon heating above 240 K. This exchange process is most likely driven by the higher adsorption energy of 2H-TPP on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, as compared to the IL. The behavior observed on Ag(111) and Au(111) is identical. The results are highly relevant for the stability of porphyrin/IL-based thin film catalyst systems and molecular devices, and more generally, stacked organic multilayer architectures.

Ionic Conductivity in Ionic Liquid Nano Thin Films

Thin film approaches are powerful methods for gaining a nanoscale understanding of interfacial ionic liquids (ILs) in the vicinity of solids. These approaches are used to directly elucidate the interfacial contributions to the physical properties of ILs as nanoscale thin films have significant proportions of the surface or interface region with respect to their total volume. Here, we report the growth of a uniform [emim][TFSA] thin film ionic liquid on a chemically modified, well-wettable sapphire, thereby allowing the in situ measurement of its ionic conductivity on the nanoscale. We observed the thickness-dependent behavior of the ionic conductivity, which gradually decreased especially when the thickness was less than 10 nm, and found it to be quantitatively analyzed well by using an empirical two-layer model. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that the thickness-dependent ionic conductivity originates from the solid-like structuring of the IL near the substrate, reproducing a thickness-dependent ionic conductivity. The MD simulation results suggest that the thickness of the low conductivity region determined in the two-layer model should roughly correspond to the thickness of the solid-like structuring of the IL near the substrate.

Pd Nanoparticle Formation in Ionic Liquid Thin Films Monitored by in situ Vibrational Spectroscopy

Ionic liquids (ILs) are flexible reaction media and solvents for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs). Here, we describe a new preparation method for metallic NPs in nanometer thick films of ultraclean ILs in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment. CO-covered Pd NPs are formed by simultaneous and by sequential physical vapor deposition (PVD) of the IL and the metal in the presence of low partial pressures of CO. The film thickness and the particle size can be controlled by the deposition parameters. We followed the formation of the NPs and their thermal behavior by time-resolved IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (TP-IRAS) and by temperature-programmed IRAS (TR-IRAS). Codeposition of Pd and [C1C2Im][OTf] in CO at 100 K leads to the growth of homogeneous multilayer films of CO-covered Pd aggregates in an IL matrix. The size of these NPs can be controlled by the metal fraction in the co-deposit. With increasing metal fraction, the size of the Pd NPs also increases. At very low metal content, small Pd carbonyl-like species are formed, which bind CO in on-top geometry only. Upon annealing, the [OTf](-) anion coadsorbs at the NP surface and partially displaces CO. Co-adsorption of CO and IL is indicated by a strong red-shift of the CO stretching bands. While the weakly bound on-top CO is mainly replaced below the melting transition of the IL, coadsorbate shells with bridge-bonded CO and IL are stable well above the melting point. Larger three-dimensional Pd NPs can be prepared by PVD of Pd onto a solid [C1C2Im][OTf] film at 100 K. Upon annealing, on-top CO desorbs from these NPs below 200 K. Upon melting of the IL film, the CO-covered Pd NPs immerse into the IL and again form a stable coadsorbate shell that consists of bridge-bonded CO and the IL.

Detection of surface mobility of poly (2, 3, 4, 5, 6-pentafluorostyrene) films by in situ variable-temperature ToF-SIMS and contact angle measurements

Poly (2, 3, 4, 5, 6-pentafluorostyrene) (5FPS) was prepared by bulk radical polymerization. The spin-cast films of this polymer were analyzed using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) at various temperatures ranging from room temperature to 120°C. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the ToF-SIMS data revealed a transition temperature (T(T)) at which the surface structure of 5FPS was rearranged. A comparison between the results of the PCA of ToF-SIMS spectra obtained on 5FPS and polystyrene (PS) indicate that the pendant groups of 5FPS and PS moved in exactly opposite directions as the temperature increased. More pendant groups of 5FPS and PS migrated from the bulk to the surface and verse versa, respectively, as the temperature increased. These results clearly support the view that the abrupt changes in the normalized principal component 1 value was caused by the surface reorientation of the polymers and not by a change in the ion fragmentation mechanism at temperatures above the T(T). Contact angle measurement, which is another extremely surface sensitive technique, was used to monitor the change in the surface tension as a function of temperature. A clear T(T) was determined by the contact angle measurements. The T(T) values determined by contact angle measurements and ToF-SIMS were very similar.

Introduction of an ionic liquid into the micropores of a metal-organic framework and its anomalous phase behavior

Controlling the dynamics of ionic liquids (ILs) is a significant issue for widespread use. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal host materials for ILs because of their small micropores and tunable host-guest interactions. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of an IL incorporated within the micropores of a MOF. The system studied consisted of EMI-TFSA (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide) and ZIF-8 (composed of Zn(MeIM)2 ; H(MeIM)=2-methylimidazole) as the IL and MOF, respectively. Construction of the EMI-TFSA in ZIF-8 was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, nitrogen gas adsorption, and infrared absorption spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and solid-state NMR measurements showed that the EMI-TFSA inside the micropores demonstrated no freezing transition down to 123 K, whereas bulk EMI-TFSA froze at 231 K. Such anomalous phase behavior originates from the nanosize effect of the MOF on the IL. This result provides a novel strategy for stabilizing the liquid phase of the ILs down to a lower temperature region.

Nonlinear behavior during semi-quantitative analysis of thin organic layers by laser desorption mass spectrometry

Characterization of the surface coverage and thickness of an organic thin film is particularly important in organic electronics and optoelectronics. For surface coverage down to the submonolayer level there is still a need for characterization methods which are easily applicable. In the present work we report on the evaluation of laser desorption mass spectrometry (LD-MS) for its use in thickness determination of organic thin films. Whereas LD-MS is well established as a soft ionization method for small molecules, its capability for use in quantitative analysis is nearly unexplored. We carried out experiments with two different molecules, 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane and hexabenzocoronene, in a series of experiments with increasing surface coverage. The obtained data were analyzed by plotting the LD signal intensities versus the relative layer thickness and they reveal a nonlinear behavior, which can be classified into regions of different desorption/ionization efficiencies. Visualization by atomic force microscopy reveals that the first efficiency change corresponds to the transition between incomplete and complete coverage of the metal surface by analyte molecules. A second transition is observed at high layer thickness where the signal intensity stays constant, independent of further thickness increments, and this is attributed to the limited penetration depth of the laser beam. The intermediate region between the two transitions shows a linear behavior and can thus be used for semi-quantitative thickness measurements. The efficiency change observed at the point of complete surface coverage is particularly useful for thin layer preparation of organic field effect transistors, where complete surface coverage is a minimum requirement.
