Abstract
This paper theoretically investigated the correlation between the open-shell electronic structure and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of one-dimensional (1D) stacked chains of π-radicals. By employing the finite N-mer models consisting of methyl or phenalenyl radicals with different stacking distances, we evaluated the average and standard deviation of diradical characters yi for N-mer models of π-radicals (yav and ySD). Then, we estimated these diradical characters at the limit of N → ∞. These y-based indices were helpful in discussing the correlation between the open-shell electronic structures and the second hyperpolarizability per dimer at the limit N → ∞, γ∞ for the 1D chains with stacking distance alternation (SDA). The calculated γ∞ values and the polymer/dimer ratio γ∞/γ(N = 2) were enhanced significantly when both the stacking distance and SDA are small. We also found that the spin-unrestricted long-range-corrected (LC-)UBLYP method with the range-separating parameter μ = 0.47 bohr-1 well reproduced the trend of γ∞ of this type of 1D chain estimated at the spin-unrestricted coupled-cluster levels. The present study is expected to contribute to establishing the design guidelines for future high-performance open-shell molecular NLO materials.

Abstract
In this study, we investigate second- and third-harmonic generation processes in Au nanorod systems using the real-time time-dependent density functional tight binding method. Our study focuses on the computation of nonlinear signals based on the time dependent dipole response induced by linearly polarized laser pulses interacting with nanoparticles. We systematically explore the influence of various laser parameters, including pump intensity, duration, frequency, and polarization directions, on harmonic generation. We demonstrate all the results using Au nanorod dimer systems arranged in end-to-end configurations, and disrupting the spatial symmetry of regular single nanorod systems is crucial for second-harmonic generation processes. Furthermore, we study the impact of nanorod lengths, which lead to variable plasmon energies, on harmonic generation, and estimates of polarizabilities and hyper-polarizabilities are provided.

Abstract
A set of novel 1,4-diaryl-1,3-butadiynes terminated by two 7-(arylethynyl)-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene fragments was prepared via the Glaser-Hay oxidative dimerization of 2-ethynyl-7-(arylethynyl)-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes. The oligomers synthesized in this way are cross-conjugated systems, in which two conjugation pathways are possible: π-conjugation of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN) fragments through a butadiyne linker and a donor-acceptor aryl-C≡C-DMAN conjugation path. The conjugation path can be "switched" simply by protonation of DMAN fragments. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are applied to analyze the extent of π-conjugation and the efficiency of particular donor-acceptor conjugation path in these new compounds. X-ray structures and absorption spectra of doubly protonated tetrafluoroborate salts of the oligomers are also discussed.

Abstract
Presented herein is the synthesis, structure, and optical properties of the aluminum(III)-zinc(II) heterometallic compound AlOC-57. This compound was found to form a large unit cell (approximately sixteen thousand atoms) and a three-shell nano-plate structure. Based on the Z-scan patterns, the third-order nonlinear optical response of the heterometallic nano-plate was mainly attributed to its nonlinear absorption (reverse saturable absorption).

Abstract
In this study, seven derivatives of salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazones (1-7) were synthesized by refluxing substituted thiosemicarbazide and salicylaldehyde in an ethanol solvent. Different spectral techniques (UV-vis, IR, and NMR) were used to analyze the prepared compounds (1-7). Accompanied by the experimental study, quantum chemical studies were also carried out at the M06/6-311G(d,p) level. A comparative analysis of the UV-visible spectra and vibrational frequencies between computational and experimental findings was also performed. These comparative data disclosed that both studies were observed to be in excellent agreement. Furthermore, natural bond orbital investigations revealed that nonbonding transitions were significant for the stability of prepared molecules. In addition, frontier molecular orbital (FMO) findings described that a promising charge transfer phenomenon was found in 1-7. The energies of FMOs were further used to determine global reactivity parameters (GRPs). These GRP factors revealed that all synthesized compounds (1-7) contain a greater hardness value (η = 2.1 eV) and a lower softness value (σ = 0.24 eV), which indicated that these compounds were less reactive and more stable. Nonlinear optical (NLO) evaluation displayed that compound 5 consisted of greater values of linear polarizability ⟨α⟩ and third-order polarizability ⟨γ⟩ of 324.93 and 1.69 × 105 a.u., respectively, while compound 3 exhibited a larger value of second-order polarizability (βtotal) of 508.41 a.u. The NLO behavior of these prepared compounds may be significant for the hi-tech NLO applications.

Abstract
A series of D-π-A chromophores based on allylidenemalononitrile electron-withdrawing group was designed. The influence of the amino-electron-donating group on the photophysical properties was studied. These compounds, highly thermally stable, exhibit orange-red emission in solution and in solid state. The experimental results have been rationalized by theoretical DFT calculations. The second order nonlinear optical properties were also studied using the electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) method.

Abstract
We investigate the relationships between open-shell character and longitudinal static second hyperpolarizabilities γ for one-hole-doped diradicaloids using the strong-correlated ab initio molecular orbital methods and simple one-dimensional (1D) three-site two-electron (3s-2e) models. As examples of one-hole-doped diradicaloids, we examine H3 +, methyl radical trimer cation ((CH3)3 +), silyl radical trimer cation ((SiH3)3 +), and 1,2,3,5-dithiadizolyl trimer cation (DTDA3 +). For H3 +, the static γ exhibits negative values and shows a monotonic increase in amplitude with an increase in the open-shell character defined by a neighbor-site interaction (y S). On the other hand, it is found for (CH3)3 +, (SiH3)3 +, and DTDA3 + that the static γ value exhibits similar behavior to that for H3 + up to an intermediate y S value, while it takes the negative maximum at a large y S value, followed by a decrease in γ amplitude, and subsequently, γ changes to positive values with a drastic increase for larger y S values. For example, in DTDA3 +, the negative/positive γ values, -69 × 105/700 × 105 au at y S = 0.75/0.87, exhibit significant enhancements in amplitude, 2.4/24 times as large as that (-29 × 105 au) at intermediate y S = 0.59 as is often the case in DTDA2. Using the 1D 3s-2e valence-bond configuration interaction model, these sign inversions and drastic increase in the amplitude of γ are found to originate in the differences in Coulomb interactions between valence electrons, between valence and core electrons, and between valence electrons and nuclei. These results contribute to pave the way for the construction of novel control guidelines for the amplitude and sign of γ for one-hole-doped diradicaloids.

Abstract
This paper aims at designing chromophores with efficient aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties for two-photon fluorescence microscopy (2PFM), which is one of the best-suited types of microscopy for the imaging of living organisms or thick biological tissues. Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives are common building blocks in the design of chromophores with efficient AIE properties. Therefore, in this study, extended TPE AIEgens specifically optimized for two-photon absorption (2PA) are synthesized and the resulting (E/Z) isomers are separated using chromatography on chiral supports. Comparative characterization of the AIE properties is performed on the pure (Z) and (E) isomers and the mixture, allowing us, in combination with powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR, to document a profound impact of crystallinity on solid-state fluorescence properties. In particular, we show that stereopure AIEgens form aggregates of superior crystallinity, which in turn exhibit a higher fluorescence quantum yield compared to diastereoisomers mixtures. Preparation of stereopure organic nanoparticles affords very bright fluorescent contrast agents, which are then used for cellular and intravital two-photon microscopy on human breast cancer cells and on zebrafish embryos.

Abstract
A photoswitchable heteroditpioc ion-pair receptor E-1 and its isomeride Z-1 (without the anion binding site), that are based on the 2-pyridyl acylhydrazone linking 2,6-pyridine bisamide, have brought our attention to systematically explore the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties by the density functional theory (DFT). In this work, we mainly studied the influences of metal cations (M = Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+), anions (X = Cl-, Br- and I-) and ion-pair (NaCl, NaBr and NaI) on NLO responses for the receptor. In addition, the impacts of isomerization and poto-switching processes on NLO response for these systems also have been discussed detailedly. The results show that the isomerization process does not effectively adjust the NLO properties for our studied systems. But the poto-switching process that was triggered by light to capure or release ions plays an important role in improving the NLO properties. The receptors E-1 and Z-1 are excellent candidates to effectively detect metal cation Pb2+, because the first hyperpolarizability (βtot) values of E∗Pb2+ and Z∗Pb2+ increased by 13 times and 20 times relative to that of receptors E-1 (188.06 a.u.) and Z-1 (270.21 a.u.), respectively. In addition, the receptor E-1 has the possibility to detect anion I- due to the larger βtot values compared with other anion-complexes. However, the changes of NLO responses for ion-pair complexes are not obvious compared with corresponding anion-complexes. We are looking forward to the research would be beneficial for further theoretical and experimental studies on recognizing metal cations and anions based on large second-order NLO difference.

Abstract
We have prepared nine structural isomers of a tetrakis(arylethynyl)benzene chromophore functionalized with 4-butoxyphenyl and pyridyl units as the respective donor and acceptor units and examined their steady-state spectroscopic parameters to study how small structural variations effect the electronic absorption and emission spectra. Unlike their 4-dibutylaminophenyl congeners that exhibited dynamic hypsochromic or bathochromic shifts in response to Lewis and Brønsted acids, the current class of compounds simply showed quenched fluorescence upon protonation; only AlCl3 elicited a red-shifted fluorescence response. Computational studies of each system were also performed to provide additional insight into the energy levels and electronic transitions present.

Abstract
The open-shell character dependences of the second hyperpolarizability, γ, are investigated for rectangular-shaped tetraradicaloid models, such as diradical dimers, using numerically exact solutions of the extended Hubbard model. The newly defined local diradical characters for intra- and intermolecular interactions (referred to as yintra and yinter, respectively) are compared to conventional global ones ( y0 and y1) and provide a comprehensive understanding of the electronic structure of the system. The system shows two kinds of enhancements of the γ components, γintra and γinter (caused, respectively, by intra- and intermolecular diradical interactions): (i) a system with a large yintra ( yinter) (>∼0.4) exhibits the enhancement of a single component of γ, γinter (γintra), at the intermediate yinter ( yintra) region (∼0.3-0.4), and (ii) in contrast to conventional diradical systems, the system exhibits a further enhancement of both components of γ (γintra and γinter) at the region where yintra ∼ yinter with small values (≤∼0.3). The obtained relationships are verified by using ab initio quantum chemical calculations of the realistic tertraradical models of a 4,4'-bis(1,2,3,5-dithiazdiazolyl) (BDTDA) dimer and a disilene dimer. The present results are expected to pioneer an alternative class of two-dimensional multiradical NLO systems, which potentially cause further enhancement of γ as compared with conventional intermediate diradical NLO systems.

Abstract
To reveal a new structure-property relationship regarding the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of fullerenes that are associated with gamma (γ) density, fullerenes I (C40, C50, C60 and C70), whose heights range from 4.83 to 7.96 Å, and II (C24, C36, C48 and C72), whose widths range from 4.45 to 8.22 Å, have been the research objects. Calculation of their geometric and electronic structures, absorption spectra, and the second hyperpolarizability (γ) and the γ density analysis have been performed. It is found that the electronic spatial extent and the polarizability (α) value increase linearly as the fullerenes increase by every 12 carbon atoms. Similarly, the γ values are also proportional to the fullerene size. It is worth noting that the relative magnitude of γxxxx and γzzzz was exactly consistent with that of the width and height of fullerenes. The analysis of γ density provides the essential reason for this result, that is, the magnitude of the contribution to γ values associated with γ densities is proportional to the density amplitudes multiplied by the distance between them. Larger fullerenes possess larger density amplitudes and longer distances, resulting in larger γ values with respect to smaller fullerenes. This work presents a new structure-property interplay between the width and height of the fullerenes and their second hyperpolarizability γ. Moreover, the γ density analysis provides a new insight to explore the nature of the relationship between the structure and the NLO properties.

Abstract
3D printing is a powerful emerging technology for the tailored fabrication of advanced functional materials. This Review summarizes the state-of-the art with regard to 3D laser micro- and nanoprinting and explores the chemical challenges limiting its full exploitation: from the development of advanced functional materials for applications in cell biology and electronics to the chemical barriers that need to be overcome to enable fast writing velocities with resolution below the diffraction limit. We further explore chemical means to enable direct laser writing of multiple materials in one resist by highly wavelength selective (λ-orthogonal) photochemical processes. Finally, chemical processes to construct adaptive 3D written structures that are able to respond to external stimuli, such as light, heat, pH value, or specific molecules, are highlighted, and advanced concepts for degradable scaffolds are explored.

The novel link between planar möbius aromatic and third order nonlinear optical properties of metal-bridged polycyclic complexes. Sci Rep 2017; 7:10182. Abstract
Metal–bridged polcyclic aromatic complexes, exhibiting unusual optical effects such as near-infrared photoluminescence with particularly large Stokes shifts, long lifetimes and aggregation enhancement, have been established as unique “carbonloong chemistry”. Herein, the electronic structures, aromaticities, absorption spectra and third order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of metal–bridged polcyclic aromatic complexes (M = Fe, Re, Os and Ir) are investigated using the density functional theory computations. It is found that the bridge–head metal can stabilize and influence rings, thus creating π–, σ– and metalla–aromaticity in an extended, π–conjugated framework. Interestingly, metal radius greatly influence the bond, aromaticity, liner and third order NLO properties, which reveals useful information to develop new applications of metal regulatory mechanism in NLO materials field. Significantly, the novel relationship between the aromaticity and third order NLO response has firstly been proposed, that the metal-bridged polycyclic complex with larger aromaticity will exhibit larger third order nonlinear optical response. It is our expectation that the novel link between aromaticity and NLO response could provide valuable information for scientists to develop the potential NLO materials on the basis of metal–bridged polycyclic complexes.

Abstract
To explore the prospect of molecules involving silicon-silicon multiple bonds as nonlinear optical molecular systems, the relationship between the structure and the second hyperpolarizabilities γ of the oligomeric systems composed of carbon and silicon π-structures is investigated using the density functional theory method. It is found that these compounds indicate intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the silicon units to the carbon units together with nonzero diradical characters. The γ values of these compounds are shown to be 2–13 times as large as those of the carbon analogs. Although asymmetric carbon and silicon π-systems exhibit comparable enhancement to the corresponding symmetric systems, donor-π-donor structures exhibit remarkable enhancement of γ despite of their both-end short silicon π-chain moieties (donor units). Further analysis using the odd electron and γ densities clarifies that the intermediate diradical character also contributes to the enhancement of γ. These results predict that even short π-conjugated silicone moieties can cause remarkable enhancement of γ by introducing them into π-conjugated hydrocarbon structures.

Abstract
The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Abstract
(2E)-3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (DPHP) was synthesized by the reaction 4(dimethylamino) benzaldehyde with 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl) ethanone under microwave irradiation. Structure of DPHP was conformed by 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR, EI-MS spectral studies and elemental analysis. The electronic absorption and fluorescence spectra of DPHP have been studied in solvents of different polarities, and the data were used to study the solvatochromic properties such as extinction coefficient, stokes shift, oscillator strength, transition dipole moment, fluorescence quantum yield and photochemical quantum yield. The absorption maximum and fluorescence emission maximum was observed red shift when increase solvent polarity n-Hexane to DMF. DPHP undergoes solubilization in different micelles and may be used as a probe and quencher to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB and SDS.

Abstract
We theoretically investigate the open-shell singlet nature and σ-/π-conjugation effects on the longitudinal second hyperpolarizabilities (γ) of one-dimensional chains involving silicon-silicon bonds, that is, polysilane and poly(disilene-1,2-diyl), by comparison with their carbon analogues, polyethylene and polyacetylene, respectively. It is found that poly(disilene-1,2-diyl) has less bond length alternation than polyacetylene and that σ-conjugation of polysilane is less effective on the enhancement of γ than π-conjugation of polyacetylene, whereas π-conjugation of poly(disilene-1,2-diyl) indicates a more than 20 times greater enhancement of the γ than that of polyacetylene, which is known to be a typical nonlinear optical molecule with large γ, for one-dimensional chains involving 3-5 double bonds. Further theoretical analyses of poly(disilene-1,2-diyl) reveal the σ- and π-electrons contribute negatively and positively to the γ, respectively. The latter contribution is significantly larger than the former and thus causes the remarkable enhancement of γ amplitudes due to the emerging open-shell singlet nature in the long π-conjugation length.

Abstract
Three unusual three-dimensional (3D) tetrazine chromophore-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {(Et4 N)[WS4 Cu3 (CN)2 (4,4'-pytz)0.5 ]}n (1), {[MoS4 Cu4 (CN)2 (4,4'-pytz)2 ]⋅CH2 Cl2 }n (2), and {[WS4 Cu3 (4,4'-pytz)3 ]⋅[N(CN)2 ]}n (3; 4,4'-pytz=3,6-bis(4-pyridyl)tetrazine) have been synthesized and characterized by using FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, gel permeation chromatography, steady-state fluorescence, and thermogravimetric analysis; their identities were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. MOF 1 possesses the first five-connected M/S/Cu (M=Mo, W) framework with an unusual 3D (4(4) ⋅6(6) ) topology constructed from T-shaped [WS4 Cu3 ](+) clusters as nodes and single CN(-) /4,4'-pytz bridges as linkers. MOF 2 features a novel 3D MOF structure with (4(20) ⋅6(8) ) topology, in which the bridging 4,4'-pytz ligands exhibit unique distorted arch structures. MOF 3 displays the first 3D MOF structure based on flywheel-shaped [WS4 Cu3 ](+) clusters with a non-interpenetrating honeycomb-like framework and a heavily distorted "ACS" topology. Steady-state fluorescence studies of 1-3 reveal significant fluorescence emissions. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 1-3 were investigated by using a Z-scan technique with 5 ns pulses at λ=532 nm. The Z-scan experimental results show that the π-delocalizable tetrazine-based 4,4'-pytz ligands contribute to the strong third-order NLO properties exhibited by 1-3. Time-dependent density functional theory studies afforded insight into the electronic transitions and spectral characterization of these functionalized NLO molecular materials.

Abstract
We discuss fundamental differences in electronic structure as reflected in one- and two-photon absorption spectra of semiconductor quantum dots and organic molecules by performing systematic experimental and theoretical studies of the size-dependent spectra of colloidal quantum dots. Quantum-chemical and effective-mass calculations are used to model the one- and two-photon absorption spectra and compare them with the experimental results. Currently, quantum-chemical calculations are limited to only small-sized quantum dots (nanoclusters) but allow one to study various environmental effects on the optical spectra such as solvation and various surface functionalizations. The effective-mass calculations, on the other hand, are applicable to the larger-sized quantum dots and can, in general, explain the observed trends but are insensitive to solvent and ligand effects. Careful comparison of the experimental and theoretical results allows for quantifying the range of applicability of theoretical methods used in this work. Our study shows that the small clusters can be in principle described in a manner similar to that used for organic molecules. In addition, there are several important factors (quality of passivation, nature of the ligands, and intraband/interband transitions) affecting optical properties of the nanoclusters. The larger-size quantum dots, on the other hand, behave similarly to bulk semiconductors, and can be well described in terms of the effective-mass models.
