Studies of Surface Wettability Conversion on TiO2 Single-Crystal Surfaces

Strong metal-support interactions of TiO2 interface-loaded Pt constructed under different atmospheres for adjusting the hydrogen storage reaction performance of N-ethylcarbazole

In this study, two series of samples (rT-Pt/TiO2 prepared with a hydrogen pretreatment and Tr-Pt/TiO2 prepared with an oxygen pretreatment) were prepared by treating commercial TiO2 supports in different atmospheres to establish different TiO2 interfacial structures, followed by the addition of platinum nanoparticles (NPs) for the catalyzed hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycle of N-ethylcarbazole (NEC). The kinetic analysis and reaction mechanism were investigated by combining XRD, Raman, CO-DRIFT, HRTEM, XPS, H2-TPD and DFT calculations. It was found that the performance of the samples for the NEC system's cyclic hydrogen storage could be modulated by treating the TiO2 interfacial structure with different atmospheres varying the extent of strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). In addition, a turnover frequency (TOF) of 191.52 min-1 for dehydrogenation was achieved at 170 °C, which is better than the previously reported catalysts. Experimental studies (characterization and kinetic studies) and DFT calculations confirmed that the SMSI of the Tr-Pt/TiO2 series samples promoted the escape of H2 and enhanced the catalytic activity for 4H-NEC in the 12H-NEC dehydrogenation reaction. In the NEC hydrogenation reaction, the rT-Pt/TiO2 series samples were pretreated with H2 before loading platinum metal, which led to the early activation of Ti4+ in their carriers, and thus suppressed the SMSI effect of the reduction process after loading platinum. This process caused the interface formed by rT-Pt/TiO2 to have a higher energy barrier to 6H-NEC, which is an intermediate product of the NEC hydrogenation process, and this interrupted the hydrogenation process of 6H-NEC.

New Insights into the Application of Biocompatible (Un)Modified TiO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 Oxide Fillers in Light-Curing Materials

A novel UV-light-curable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate matrix composite material with unmodified and methacryloxyl-grafted TiO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 systems was developed and tested as a potential coating material for medical components. The main goal of the research was to evaluate how the addition of (un)modified inorganic oxide fillers affects the properties of the composition (viscosity, UV/Vis spectra), the kinetics of photocuring (photo-DSC), and the morphological (SEM), physicochemical, and thermal properties (DSC, TGA) of the resulting composites. The applied filler functionalization process decreased their polarity and changed their size, BET surface area, and pore volume, which influenced the viscosity and kinetics of the photocurable system. In addition, the addition of synthesized fillers reduced the polymer's glass transition temperature and increased its thermal stability. It was also observed that additional UV irradiation of the tested composite changed its surface, resulting in hydrophobic properties (with the addition of 7 wt.% filler, an increase in the contact angle by more than 45% was observed).

Activated carbon fibers functionalized with superhydrophilic coated pDA/TiO2/SiO2 with photoluminescent self-cleaning properties for efficient oil-water separation

The adhesion of high-viscosity oil contamination poses limitations on three-dimensional (3D) materials' practical use in treating oilfield-produced water (OPW). In this study, we developed a hybrid pDA/TiO2/SiO2 coating (PTS) on the surface of hydrophilic activated carbon (ACF1) through a combination of dopamine (DA) polymerization, ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis, and the condensation of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with SiO2 NPs. This coating was designed for gravity-based oil-water separation. The inherent porosity and generous pore size of ACF1-PTS conferred it an ultra-high permeation flux (pure water flux of 3.72 × 105 L∙m-2∙h-1), allowing it to effectively separate simulated oil-water mixtures and oil-water emulsions while maintaining exceptional permeation flux and oil rejection efficiency. When compared to cleaning methods involving ethanol aqueous solutions and NaClO, ultraviolet (UV) illumination cleaning proved superior, enabling oil-contaminated ACF1-PTS to exhibit remarkable flux recovery efficiency and oil-removal capabilities during cyclic separation of actual OPW. Furthermore, the ACF1-PTS material demonstrated impressive stability and durability when exposed to acidic environments (acid, alkali, and salt), robust hydraulic washout conditions, and 25-cycle tests. This study offers valuable insights and research avenues for the development of highly efficient and environmentally friendly 3D oil-water separation materials for the actual treatment of OPW.

Photo-Induced Super-Hydrophilicity of Nano-Calcite @ Polyester Fabric: Enhanced Solar Photocatalytic Activity against Imidacloprid

The present study is pertinent to photo-induced, hydrophilic, nano-calcite grown onto the mercerized surface of polyester fabric (PF), treated with UV (10-50 min) and visible light (1-5 h) in addition to its photocatalytic application. The wicking method has been employed to select the most hydrophilic sample of fabric upon irradiation. The micrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicated the erosions occurring at the surface of nano-calcite after UV light irradiation, maintaining the crystallinity of the photocatalyst. The surface charge has been measured for as-fabricated and irradiated nano-calcite @ PF for the development of high negative zeta potential after UV light irradiation (-24.6 mV). The irradiated nano-calcite @ PF exhibited a significant change in its contact angle, and the wetting property was enhanced to a considerable extent on UV (55.32°) and visible light irradiation (79.00°) in comparison to as-fabricated nano-calcite @ PF (137.54°). The irradiated samples of nano-calcite @ PF delineated the redshift in harvesting of solar spectrum, as revealed by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy comparative spectra. Additionally, the band gap of untreated nano-calcite was found to be 3.5 eV, while UV- and visible light-irradiated PF showed a reduction in band gap up to 2.95 and 3.15 eV upon UV and visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic efficiency of mesoporous nano-calcite was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid as the probe pollutant. Higher solar photocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid (94.15%) was attained by UV light-irradiated nano-calcite @ PF. The time-resolved photoluminescence study has verified the high photocatalytic activity of UV light-irradiated nano-calcite @ PF for the generation of high concentration of hydroxyl radicals. The highly efficient reusability of a nano-calcite-based solar photocatalytic reactor has been observed for 10 cycles of treatment of imidacloprid bearing wastewater. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of UV light-exposed (20 min), superhydrophilic, nano-calcite @ PF for mineralization of pollutants suggests it to be an efficient solar photocatalyst for environmental applications.

Gas phase deposition of well-defined bimetallic gold-silver clusters for photocatalytic applications

Cluster beam deposition is employed for fabricating well-defined bimetallic plasmonic photocatalysts to enhance their activity while facilitating a more fundamental understanding of their properties. Au_xAg_1-x clusters with compositions (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1) spanning the metals' miscibility range were produced in the gas-phase and soft-landed on TiO₂ P25-coated silicon wafers with an optimal coverage of 4 atomic monolayer equivalents. Electron microscopy images show that at this coverage most clusters remain well dispersed whereas EXAFS data are in agreement with the finding that the deposited clusters have an average size of ca. 5 nm and feature the same composition as the ablated alloy targets. A composition-dependant electron transfer from Au to Ag that is likely to impart chemical stability to the bimetallic clusters and protect Ag atoms against oxidation is additionally evidenced by XPS and XANES. Under simulated solar light, Au_xAg_1-x clusters show a remarkable composition-dependent volcano-type enhancement of their photocatalytic activity towards degradation of stearic acid, a model compound for organic fouling on surfaces. The Formal Quantum Efficiency (FQE) is peaking at the Au_0.3Ag_0.7 composition with a value that is twice as high as that of the pristine TiO₂ P25 under solar simulator. Under UV the FQE of all compositions remains similar to that of pristine TiO₂. A classical electromagnetic simulation study confirms that among all compositions Au_0.3Ag_0.7 features the largest near-field enhancement in the wavelength range of maximal solar light intensity, as well as sufficient individual photon energy resulting in a better photocatalytic self-cleaning activity. This allows ascribing the mechanism for photocatalysis mostly to the plasmonic effect of the bimetallic clusters through direct electron injection and near-field enhancement from the resonant cluster towards the conduction band of TiO₂. These results not only demonstrate the added value of using well-defined bimetallic nanocatalysts to enhance their photocatalytic activity but also highlights the potential of the cluster beam deposition to design tailored noble metal modified photocatalytic surfaces with controlled compositions and sizes without involving potentially hazardous chemical agents.

Ultraviolet-Driven Janus Foams with Wetting Gradients: Unidirectional Penetration Control for Underwater Bubbles

Understanding the behavior of underwater bubbles and enabling their effective manipulation is important for bubble capture, collection, and transport. Here, to discuss the underwater permeation behavior of bubbles and critical influencing parameters in this process, the copper foams with tunable wettability were fabricated by utilizing the light-stimulated wettability response of TiO₂. The Janus copper foams had different wettability gradients from superhydrophobic/hydrophobic to superhydrophobic/hydrophilic after UV irradiation at different times, and the bubbles on the surfaces showed distinctly diverse penetration behaviors. In particular, the constructed superhydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces showed more difficult to achieve bubble penetration than the fully superhydrophobic, superhydrophobic/hydrophobic surface. It was found that the wetting states of the foams exposed to different irradiation times underwater plays a crucial role in the bubble penetration behavior. In other words, the difficulty of bubble penetration depends on the difficulty of bubble transition from gas-liquid contact to gas-solid contact. This facile and low-cost fabrication approach for Janus foams provided a valuable approach to understand the penetration behaviors of underwater bubbles, which is significant for expanding potential applications in bubble capture, bubble transport, and control of unstable gas reactions in underwater conditions.

Nanocellulose for Sustainable Water Purification

Nanocelluloses (NC) are nature-based sustainable biomaterials, which not only possess cellulosic properties but also have the important hallmarks of nanomaterials, such as large surface area, versatile reactive sites or functionalities, and scaffolding stability to host inorganic nanoparticles. This class of nanomaterials offers new opportunities for a broad spectrum of applications for clean water production that were once thought impractical. This Review covers substantial discussions based on evaluative judgments of the recent literature and technical advancements in the fields of coagulation/flocculation, adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane filtration for water decontamination through proper understanding of fundamental knowledge of NC, such as purity, crystallinity, surface chemistry and charge, suspension rheology, morphology, mechanical properties, and film stability. To supplement these, discussions on low-cost and scalable NC extraction, new characterizations including solution small-angle X-ray scattering evaluation, and structure-property relationships of NC are also reviewed. Identifying knowledge gaps and drawing perspectives could generate guidance to overcome uncertainties associated with the adaptation of NC-enabled water purification technologies. Furthermore, the topics of simultaneous removal of multipollutants disposal and proper handling of post/spent NC are discussed. We believe NC-enabled remediation nanomaterials can be integrated into a broad range of water treatments, greatly improving the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of water purification.

Underoil Directional Self-Transportation of Water Droplets on a TiO2-Coated Conical Spine

Directional self-transportation of tiny droplets is significant in many fields. However, almost all existing studies focus on the phenomenon in air, and to realize similar performance in complex environments, such as oil, is still extremely rare. Here, we report a TiO₂-coated conical spine (TCS) and demonstrate underoil directional self-transportation of water droplets on its surface. It is found that high surface hydrophilicity resulting from UV irradiation is necessary to achieve the self-transportation of water in oil. The critical water contact angle in oil is about 57°, and the maximal transport velocity can reach 1.4 mm/s. Mechanism analysis reveals that the excellent self-transportation property is ascribed to the combined effect between the Laplace force (F_L) caused by the conical gradient structure and the hysteresis reduction resulting from the high hydrophilicity. Moreover, based on the special underoil self-transportation performance, a droplet-based microreaction and demulsification of water-in-oil emulsions were demonstrated using the TCS. This work reports the self-transportation of water in oil, which could provide some fresh ideas for designing new superwetting self-transportation materials.

Protein Patterning on Microtextured Polymeric Nano-brush Templates Obtained By Nanosecond Fibre Laser

Micropatterned polymer brushes have attracted attention in several biomedical areas, i.e., tissue engineering, protein microarray, biosensors etc., for precise arrangement of biomolecules. Herein, we report a facile and scalable approach to create microtextured polymer brushes with the ability to generate different type of protein patterns. Nanosecond fibre laser was exploited to generate micropatterns on polyPEGMA (poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) brush modified Ti alloy substrate. Surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation was employed to grow PolyPEGMA brush (11-87 nm thick) on Ti alloy surface immobilized with initiator having an initiator density (σ*) of 1.5 initiators/nm² . Polymer brushes were then selectively laser ablated and their presence on non-textured area was confirmed by atomic force microscopy, fluorescence microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Spatial orientation of biomolecules was first achieved by non-specific protein adsorption on areas ablated by the laser, via physisorption. Further, patterned brushes of polyPEGMA were modified to activated ester that gave rise to protein conjugation specifically on non-laser ablated brush areas. Moreover, the laser ablated brush modified patterned template was also successfully utilized for generating alternate patterns of bacteria. This promising technique can be further extended to create interesting patterns of several biomolecules which are of great interest to biomedical research community. Prewetting Induced Hydrophilicity to Augment Photocatalytic Activity of Nanocalcite @ Polyester Fabric

To eliminate imidacloprid insecticide from wastewater, nanocalcite was grafted onto the surface of pretreated polyester fabric. The process of seeding was followed by the low temperature hydrothermal method for the growth of nanocalcite for the functionalization of fabric. The goal of this study was to improve the hydrophilicity of the nanocalcite photocatalyst that had been grafted onto the surface of polyester fabric (PF) using acidic and basic prewetting techniques. The morphological characteristics, crystalline nature, surface charge density, functional groups of surface-modified nanocalcite @ PF were determined via SEM, XRD, FTIR, and Zeta potential (ZP), respectively. Characterization results critically disclosed surface roughness due to excessive induction of hydroxyl groups, rhombohedral crystal structure, and high charge density (0.721 mS/cm). Moreover, contact angle of nanocalcite @ PF was calculated to be 137.54° while after acidic and basic prewetting, it was reduced to 87.17° and 48.19°. Similarly, bandgap of the as fabricated nanocalcite was found to be 3.5 eV, while basic prewetted PF showed a reduction in band gap (2.9 eV). The solar photocatalytic mineralization of imidacloprid as a probe pollutant was used to assess the improvement in photocatalytic activity of nanocalcite @ PF after prewetting. Response surface methodology was used to statistically optimize the solar exposure time, concentration of the oxidant, and initial pH of the reaction mixture. Maximum solar photocatalytic degradation of the imidacloprid was achieved by basic prewetted nanocalcite @ PF (up to 91.49%), which was superior to acidic prewetted fabric and as-fabricated nanocalcite @ PF. Furthermore, HPLC and FTIR findings further indicated that imidacloprid was decomposed vastly to harmless species by basic prewetted nanocalcite @ PF.

Robust Hydrophobic Materials by Surface Modification in Transition-Metal Diborides

Exploring the hydrophobicity of robust conductors is significant for electronic devices to simultaneously be used in a wet environment and extreme conditions. However, a combination of conductivity, strong mechanical properties, and hydrophobicity in one material is hindered by the inherent features of the materials. A new kind of robust hydrophobic conductor is designed in transition-metal diborides (TMdBs: TiB₂, ZrB₂, and HfB₂) to break through this challenge. The results calculated by density functional theory indicate that high hardness comes from high shear and bulk modulus, which is consistent with experimental results (TiB₂, 25.0 GPa; ZrB₂, 17.5 GPa; HfB₂, 21.5 GPa). The theoretical calculated results reveal that edge sides have a lower surface energy than basal plane (001) in TMdBs. Hence, the edge sides are exposed with a needle-like morphology in TMdBs. Moreover, needle-like surfaces exhibiting hydrophobicity have water contact angles of 132.0° (TiB₂), 116.8° (ZrB₂), and 114.0° (HfB₂). The hydrophobicity arises from a lower surface free energy of edge sides in TMdBs and a rough surface that reduces the contact area of water and a solid. This work develops a new kind of robust functional material in TMdBs.

Formulating Multiphase Medium Anti-wetting States in an Air-Water-Oil System: Engineering Defects for Interface Chemical Evolutions

Studies which regulate macroscopic wetting states on determined surfaces in multiphase media are of far-reaching significance but are still in the preliminary stage. Herein, inspired by the wettability subassembly of fish scales, Namib desert beetle shell, and lotus leaf upper side, interfaces in the air-water-oil system are programmed by defect engineering to tailor the anti-wetting evolution from double to triple liquid repellency states. By controlling the visible light irradiation and plasma treatment, surface oxygen vacancies on Cu_xO@TiO₂ nanowires (NWs) can be healed or reconstructed. The original membrane or the membrane after plasma treatment possesses abundant surface oxygen vacancies, and the homogeneous hydrophilic membrane shows only double anti-wetting states in the water-oil system. By the unsaturated visible light irradiation time, the surface oxygen vacancy partially healed, the heterogeneous hydrophilic-hydrophobic components occupied the membrane surface, and the anti-wetting state finally changed from double to triple in the air-water-oil system. After the illumination time reaches saturation, it promotes the healing of all surface oxygen vacancies, and the membrane surface only contains uniform hydrophobic components and only maintains double anti-wetting state in the air-oil system. The mechanism of the triple anti-wetting state on a heterogeneous surface is expounded by establishing a wetting model. The wetting state and the adhesion state of the Cu_xO@TiO₂ NW membrane show regional specificity by controlling the illumination time and region. The underwater oil droplets exhibit the "non-adhesive" and "adhesive" state in a region with unsaturated irradiation time or in an unirradiated region, respectively. Underwater oil droplet manipulation can be accomplished easily based on switchable wettability and adhesion. Current studies reveal that defect engineering can be extended to anti-wetting evolution in the air-water-oil system. Constructing an anti-wetting interface by heterogeneous components provides reference for designing the novel anti-wetting interface.

Crystal face dependent wettability of α-quartz: Elucidation by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques combined with molecular dynamics

HYPOTHESIS

Quartz is one of the most common but important minerals, and its wettability plays a significant role in affecting various natural and industrial processes. Studies have revealed that different crystal faces of quartz are with different wettabilities, but its mechanism is still vague.

EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS

For specifying the mechanism of crystal face dependent wettability, the contact angles of three different liquids on the crystal faces of α-quartz are measured; the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is employed to establish the crystal surface models; molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the surface models are performed to understand the wetting behavior at molecular scale.

FINDINGS

Based on the contact angle measurements, the wettabilities of different crystal faces of α-quartz are found different, which can be directly attributed to the concentration of hydroxyl group on crystal faces based on ToF-SIMS results. MD simulations yield consistent results with the contact angle order recognized from experiments, revealing that the surface hydroxyl group controls the wettability of α-quartz crystal faces. It is also recognized that the pristine surface atomic arrangement, especially the surface concentration of unsaturated bond (an intrinsic property of α-quartz), is the intrinsic cause of the difference in the concentration of hydroxyl group of the crystal surface.

Exploring the activation pathway of photo-induced electrons in facets-dependent I-doped BiOCl nanosheets for PCPNa degradation

Electrons can degrade pentachlorphenate sodium (PCPNa) directly or activate molecular oxygen to produce·O2-and ·OH for its degradation. However, less work has been performed to control such two kinds of reaction pathway by modifying BiOCl. Herein, we firstly regulated the reaction pathway between electrons and PCPNa by adjusting the amount of surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) and surface adsorbed hydroxyl groups in I^-doped BiOCl exposed with different facets. OVs on (001) facets-exposed I^-doped BiOCl enabled large amount of PCPNa to adsorb on its surface and facilitated the direct reaction between electrons and PCPNa. In contrary, more surface adsorbed hydroxyl groups and oxygen on (010) facets-exposed I^-doped BiOCl can retard the direct reaction between electrons and PCPNa via lowering the adsorption of PCPNa and increasing the activation of molecular oxygen by electrons. Although more·O2-and ·OH generated in I^-doped (010)-facets exposed BiOCl, I^-doped (001)-facets exposed BiOCl exhibited better photocatalytic activity. We proposed that the direct reaction between electrons and PCPNa can enhance the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons and improve photocatalytic degradation efficiency of PCPNa.

Photo-induced hydrophilicity at the ZnO(112̄0) surface: an evolutionary algorithm-aided density functional theory study

Evolutionary algorithm-aided density functional theory calculations were utilized to determine the stable adsorption structures of H₂O at ZnO(112̄0) extensively under different coverages. By decomposing the adsorption energetics, we illustrate that H₂O dissociation to a large extent is actually hampered by the barrier for induced distortion of the ZnO surface, and once the surface becomes less difficult to be distorted it will exhibit higher hydrophilicity or even superhydrophilicity. Specifically, photo-stimulation modelling suggests that the surface Zn-O bonds can be weakened by photo-excitation, and the layer of fully dissociated H₂O can be then facilitated to form. Accordingly, a novel mechanism for photo-induced superhydrophilicity is proposed.

Influence of TiO2 Nanoparticles on the Resistance of Cementitious Composite Materials to the Action of Fungal Species

The development of mold films on the cement surfaces of buildings is a health and safety problem for the population, aesthetic but also in terms of their durability. The use of specific performance of cementitious composites containing TiO₂ nanoparticles, photoactivated by UV radiation, can be a viable solution to mitigate to eliminate these problems. The experimental studies presented aim to analyze the capacity to inhibit the development of mold type Aspergillus and Penicillium on the surface of composite materials with nano-TiO₂ content and the identification of the optimal range of nanomaterial addition. The identification and analysis of the inhibition halo (zone with a biological load of maximum 1–10 colonies of microorganisms) confirmed the biocidal capacity of the cementitious composites, but also indicated the possibility that an excess of TiO₂ nanoparticles in the mixture could induce a development of cell resistance, which would be unfavorable both in terms of behavior and in terms of cost.

Titanium Dioxide Derived Materials with Superwettability

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used in various fields both in daily life and industry owing to its excellent photoelectric properties and its induced superwettability. Over the past several decades, various methods have been reported to improve the wettability of TiO2 and plenty of practical applications have been developed. The TiO2-derived materials with different morphologies display a variety of functions including photocatalysis, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, etc. Herein, various functions and applications of TiO2 with superwettability are summarized and described in different sections. First, a brief introduction about the discovery of photoelectrodes made of TiO2 is revealed. The ultra-fast spreading behaviors on TiO2 are shown in the part of ultra-fast spreading with superwettability. The part of controllable wettability introduces the controllable wettability of TiO2-derived materials and their related applications. Recent developments of interfacial photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical reactions with TiO2 are presented in the part of interfacial photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical reactions. The part of nanochannels for ion rectification describes ion transportation in nanochannels based on TiO2-derived materials. In the final section, a brief conclusion and a future outlook based on the superwettability of TiO2 are shown.

Suitability of Different Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Morphologies for Photocatalytic Water Treatment

Photocatalysis has long been touted as one of the most promising technologies for environmental remediation. The ability of photocatalysts to degrade a host of different pollutants, especially recalcitrant molecules, is certainly appealing. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been used extensively for this purpose. Anodic oxidation allows for the synthesis of a highly ordered nanotubular structure with a high degree of tunability. In this study, a series of TiO₂ arrays were synthesised using different electrolytes and different potentials. Mixed anatase-rutile photocatalysts with excellent wettability were achieved with all the experimental iterations. Under UVA light, all the materials showed significant photoactivity towards different organic pollutants. The nanotubes synthesised in the ethylene glycol-based electrolyte exhibited the best performance, with near complete degradation of all the pollutants. The antibacterial activity of this same material was similarly high, with extremely low bacterial survival rates. Increasing the voltage resulted in wider and longer nanotubes, characteristics which increase the level of photocatalytic activity. The ease of synthesis coupled with the excellent activity makes this a viable material that can be used in flat-plate reactors and that is suitable for photocatalytic water treatment.

Superhydrophilic Fe3+ Doped TiO2 Films with Long-Lasting Antifogging Performance

Based on the superhydrophilicity of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) after ultraviolet irradiation, it has a high potential in the application of antifogging. However, a durable superhydrophilic state and a broader photoresponse range are necessary. Considering the enhancement of the photoresponse of TiO₂, doping is an effective method to prolong the superhydrophilic state. In this paper, a Fe³⁺ doped TiO₂ film with long-lasting superhydrophilicity and antifogging is prepared by sol-gel method. The experiment and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to investigate the antifogging performance and the underlying microscopic mechanism of Fe³⁺ doped TiO₂. Antifogging tests demonstrate that 1.0 mol % Fe³⁺ doping leads to durable antifogging performance which lasts 60 days. The DFT calculations reveal that the Fe³⁺ doping can both increase the photolysis ability of TiO₂ under sunlight exposure and enhance the stability of the hydroxyl adsorbate on TiO₂ surface, which are the main reasons for a long-lasting superhydrophilicity of TiO₂ after sunlight exposure.

Programming Multiphase Media Superwetting States in the Oil-Water-Air System: Evolutions in Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic Surface Heterogeneous Chemistry

Studies toward tailoring macroscopic extreme wetting behaviors on a certain well-defined surface in multiphase media are significant but still at an infant stage. Herein, superantiwetting evolutions in the oil-water-air system can be programmed from single to quadruple superrepellence by controlling the surface hydrophobic-hydrophilic heterogeneous chemistry. Ammonia vapor exposure makes the realization of challenging superhydrophilicity-superoleophobicity possible in air medium, causing the transition from quadruple to triple superantiwetting states in the oil-water-air system. Upon UV illumination, only single superrepellence-underwater superoleophobicity is maintained on titanium dioxide (TiO₂, P25)-based coatings. A reversible transition between underoil superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity via an alternating UV irradiation and heating process leads to a switching between "water-absorbing" and "size-sieving" effects in water-in-oil emulsion separation. A comparative study for investigating two such effects in emulsion separation is further investigated. The current conceptual insights not only extend superwetting states to multiphase media, but can also deepen the understanding of the relationship between macroscopic extreme wetting behaviors and surface chemistry.

Double layer SiO2-TiO2 sol-gel thin films on glass for antireflection, antifogging, and UV recoverable self-cleaning

Double layer thin films, mechanically stable and adhering to glass, were produced through the sol-gel process, using tetraethyl orthosilicate and titanium butoxide as precursors. The refractive index of the titania and silica-titania composite layers were typically 2.1 and 1.7, and their physical thicknesses were approximately 65 nm and 81 nm, respectively, as determined by ellipsometry. These optical constants allowed attainment of quarter-wave optical thicknesses at the center of the visible spectrum (550 nm) as designed, with an increase of 3.4% in transmittance. The nanometric surface roughness, measured by optical profilometry, was effective to decrease light scattering and water contact angles to below 10°. As novelty in dip-coated sol-gel films, superhydrophilicity for self-cleaning, antifogging, and antireflection in the mid-visible spectrum were simultaneously attained with durability of 9 weeks in the dark. Further application of UV light allowed regeneration of contact angles for self-cleaning.

Immobilization of Cubic Silver Plasmonic Nanoparticles on TiO2 Nanotubes, Reducing the Coffee Ring Effect in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates prepared by immobilizing silver cubic nanoparticles (Ag CNPs) on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs) were used for investigations of the "coffee ring" (CR) effect and its impact on spatial reproducibility of measured Raman signals in comparison with flat surfaces (Ti and Si) where the CR effect is usually significant. The immobilization of nanoparticles from drops, which is a very simple technique, usually does not permit a homogeneous distribution of deposited NPs because there is significant accumulation of the material at the boundary of the drying area. Our proposed SERS substrates effectively reduced the CR effect through the use of well-ordered nanostructures where a smaller number of Ag CNPs were transferred to the boundary region. It was not only the surface morphology that was important but also the physicochemical properties of TiO₂ NTs, such as wettability. The wettability of the prepared samples was determined by measuring the static water contact angle (WCA), and the chemical composition near the boundary of the drying area was studied using Auger electron spectroscopy. The morphology of the substrates obtained was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Our studies showed that reducing the coffee ring effect increased the spatial reproducibility of the measured SERS signal in the area of the deposited CNPs. Therefore, the platforms obtained may be very useful in commercial SERS applications.

Optically Induced Rapid Wetting Transition on Zn-Polar and O-Polar Zinc Oxide

The design and fabrication of surfaces that support rapid wetting transition remain technologically challenging. Here, we examine the effects of optical illumination on the wetting behaviors of zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals. We find that ultraviolet irradiation above the band gap energy promotes a rapid wetting transition, characterized by sliding of the water droplet, within a few seconds. Notably, the transition for Zn-polar (0001) ZnO surfaces is even faster than that for O-polar (0001̅) ZnO surfaces. We confirmed that process is dependent on power, surface polarity, and solution pH and reversible through illumination by near-infrared light, which restores the water contact angle back to its initial value. Surface chemical analysis revealed that the instantaneous photocatalytic formation of surface-terminated hydroxyl (-OH) groups is responsible for the observed rapid wetting transition. Density functional theory calculations with the inclusion of onsite Coulomb interactions revealed that both the Zn-polar and O-polar surfaces can be easily covered with -OH groups through the adsorption of -OH groups or hydrogen atoms, respectively. This study develops a route to fabricate optically active and controllable microfluidic devices that support rapid wetting transitions for water droplet manipulation.

Dynamics of Photo-Induced Surface Oxygen Vacancies in Metal-Oxide Semiconductors Studied Under Ambient Conditions

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique commonly used in the detection of traces of organic molecules. The mechanism of SERS is of a dual nature, with Raman scattering enhancements due to a combination of electromagnetic (EM) and chemical contributions. In conventional SERS, the EM component is largely responsible for the enhancement, with the chemical contribution playing a less significant role. An alternative technique, called photo-induced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) has been recently developed, using a photo-activated semiconductor substrate to give additional chemical enhancement of Raman bands over traditional SERS. This enhancement is assigned to surface oxygen vacancies (V o) formed upon pre-irradiation of the substrate. In this work, the exceptional chemical contribution in PIERS allows for the evaluation of atomic V o dynamics in metal oxide surfaces. This technique is applied to study the formation and healing rates of surface-active V o in archetypical metal-oxide semiconductors, namely, TiO2, WO3, and ZnO. Contrary to conventional analytical tools, PIERS provides intuitive and valuable information about surface stability of atomic defects at ambient pressure and under operando conditions, which has important implications in a wide range of applications including catalysis and energy storage materials.

Visible Light-Activated Self-Recovery Hydrophobic CeO2/Black TiO2 Coating Prepared Using Air Plasma Spraying

Hydrophobic coatings are widely used in many areas from home to industry. However, the hydrophobicity can be easily degraded by adsorption of the atmospheric contaminations. In this study, a novel CeO₂/black TiO₂ hydrophobic coating with self-recovery capability is prepared using air plasma spraying without any chemical modification. The water contact angles (WCAs) of the coatings decreased after oleic acid contamination. Because of the presence of black TiO₂, the composite coating has the photodegradation property under irradiation of visible light, and the part of the black TiO₂ transforms to be superhydrophilic after irradiation for the generation of the surface oxygen vacancies. The oleic acid was decomposed and the WCAs changed depending on the volume percentage of the CeO₂. The coating exhibits hydrophilicity when the volume percentage of the CeO₂ is less than 60%, and hydrophobic when higher. After storage in a dark and clean environment, all the coatings can recover their hydrophobicity for the black TiO₂ that returned back to its origin state. It is believed that this hydrophobic self-cleaning ceramic coating should have potential in engineering applications.

In-situ creating elastic lattice OO bonds over semicrystalline yellow TiO2 nanoparticles for significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 production

Atomic defects (e.g., Ti³⁺, oxygen vacancies) have been intenstively investigated for modifying TiO₂ in order to reach visible light active photocatalytic H₂ production. However, the atomic defects within TiO₂ could easily act as photo-generated charge-carrier recombination centers, resulting in relatively low H₂ conversion efficiency. In this paper, semicrystalline yellow TiO₂ nanoparticles rich of superoxide ions are new synthesized by a simple aqueous solution method. Instead of introducing atomic defects, we show for the first time that catalytic performance can also be significantly improved via in-situ creating lattice OO bonds within metastable semicrystalline TiO₂. The synthesized semicrystalline yellow TiO₂ exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for H₂ production after cycle tests. The formaldehyde in aqueous solution is used as target pollutant to simulate industrial wastewater. In-situ created elastic lattice OO bonds are proposed to improve catalytic performance through facilitating the breakage of CH bonds of HCHO. A series of internally consistent reaction equations is proposed that describes the role of in-situ created lattice OO bonds for improving the catalytic performance. This is strongly supported by that the H₂ production rate at the end of the fourth cycle test is significantly more than that of the beginning of the first cycle test.

Preparation of AgCl Particles with Different Superwettabilities by Particle Size Regulation

In this work, a simple ammonia evaporation process to obtain AgCl powder with arbitrary superwettability, without introducing any low-surface-free-energy modifier, was investigated. By controlling the recrystallization parameters of the ammonia evaporation process, AgCl crystals precipitated from AgCl-ammonia solution show different wettabilities ranging from superhydrophilicity, via hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, to superhydrophobicity, with the same chemical composition and structure. Characterization of the obtained AgCl samples with different wettabilities confirms the decisive effect of particle size although light irradiation also causes their wettability transformation.

Study on self-cleaning performance and hydrophobicity of TiO2/silane coatings

Purpose

The paper aims to investigate the effect of Degussa P-25 Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on hydrophobicity and self-cleaning ability as a single organic coating on glass substrate.

Design/methodology/approach

Two methods have been used to enhance the hydrophobicity on glass substrates, namely, surface modification by using low surface energy isooctyltrimethoxysilane (ITMS) solution and construction of rough surface morphology using Degussa P-25 TiO2nanoparticles with simple bottom-up approach. The prepared sol was applied onto glass substrate using dip-coating technique and stoved in the vacuum furnace 350°C.

Findings

The ITMS coating with nano TiO2pigment has modified the glass substrate surface by achieving the water contact angle as high as 169° ± 2° and low sliding angle of 0° with simple and low-cost operation. The solid and air phase interface has created excellent anti-dirt and self-cleaning properties against dilute ketchup solution, mud and silicon powder.

Research limitations/implications

Findings will be useful in the development of self-cleaning and anti-dirt coating for photovoltaic panels.

Practical implications

Sol method provides the suitable medium for the combination of organic–inorganic network to achieve high superhydrophobicity and optimum self-cleaning ability.

Superhydrophobic Surface Preparation and Wettability Transition of Titanium Alloy with Micro/Nano Hierarchical Texture

Microstructures are applied to various hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces due to the role of adjusting the surface wettability. In this paper, a 1064 nm pulsed picosecond laser was applied to prepare a micro/nano hierarchical structure on the surface of the titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). The microstructures consist of dimple arrays with various diameters, depths, and areal densities. They are obtained by controlling the pulse energy and the number of pulses. The nanostructures are periodic ripples, which are defined as laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS), and the dimensional parameter of LIPSS can be adjusted by changing the laser energy density and scanning speed. The contact angles of various laser textured surfaces were measured. It is found that the contact angle increases with the density of micro-textured surface increases, and the wetting state of textured surfaces conforms to the Cassie model. Some laser processed samples were subjected to low-temperature annealing treatment. It is observed that the low-temperature annealing process can accelerate the surface wettability transition significantly, which is attributed to the change of the hydroxyl groups on the surface. Finally, a superhydrophobic surface with the maximum contact angle of 144.58° is obtained.

UV-Resistant and Thermally Stable Superhydrophobic CeO2 Nanotubes with High Water Adhesion

A novel type of sticky superhydrophobic cerium dioxide (CeO₂ ) nanotube material is prepared by hydrothermal treatment without any chemical modification. A water droplet on the material surface shows a static water contact angle of about 157° but the water droplet is pinned on the material surface even when the material surface is turned upside down. Interestingly, the as-prepared CeO₂ nanotube material displays durable superhydrophobicity and enhanced adhesion to water under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Importantly, this change in water adhesion can be reversed by heat treatment to restore the original adhesive value of 20 µL. Further, the maximum volume of the water droplet adhered on the material surface of CeO₂ nanotubes can be regulated without loss of superhydrophobicity during the heating treatment/UV-irradiation cycling. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic CeO₂ nanotube material shows remarkable thermal stability even at temperatures as high as 450 °C, long-term durability in chemical environment, and air-storage and good resistance to oily contaminant. Finally, the potential application in no-loss water transportation of this sticky superhydrophobic CeO₂ material is demonstrated.

Under-Oil Switchable Superhydrophobicity to Superhydrophilicity Transition on TiO2 Nanotube Arrays

Recently, smart interfacial materials that can reversibly transit between the superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity have aroused much attention. However, all present performances happen in air, and to realize such a smart transition in complex environments, such as oil, is still a challenge. Herein, TiO₂ nanotube arrays with switchable transition between the superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity in oil are reported. The switching can be observed by alternation of UV irradiation and heating process, and the smart controllability can be ascribed to the cooperative effect between the surface nanostructures and the chemical composition variation. By using the controllable wetting performances, some applications such as under-oil droplet-based microreaction and water-removal from oil were demonstrated on our surface. This paper reports a surface with smart water wettability in oil, which could start some fresh ideas for wetting control on interfacial materials.

Acidic Peptizing Agent Effect on Anatase-Rutile Ratio and Photocatalytic Performance of TiO2 Nanoparticles

TiO₂ nanoparticles were synthesized from titanium isopropoxide by a simple peptization method using sulfuric, nitric, and acetic acids. The effect of peptizing acid on physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of TiO₂ powders was studied. The structural properties of synthesized TiO₂ powders were analyzed by using XRD, TEM, N₂-physisorption, Raman, DR UV-vis, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The characterization results showed that acetic acid peptization facilitated the formation of pure anatase phase after thermal treatment at 500 °C; in contrast, nitric acid peptization led to a major rutile phase formation (67%). Interestingly, the sample peptized using sulfuric acid yielded 95% anatase and 5% rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized TiO₂ nanoparticles was evaluated for degradation of selected organic dyes (crystal violet, methylene blue, and p-nitrophenol) in aqueous solution. The results confirmed that the TiO₂ sample peptized using nitric acid (with rutile and anatase phases in 3:1 ratio) offered the highest activity for degradation of organic dyes, although, TiO₂ samples peptized using sulfuric acid and acetic acid possessed smaller particle size, higher band gap energy, and high surface area. Interestingly, TiO₂ sample peptized with nitric acid possessed relatively high theoretical photocurrent density (0.545 mAcm^-2) and pore diameter (150 Å), which are responsible for high electron-hole separation efficiency and diffusion and mass transportation of organic reactants during the photochemical degradation process. The superior activity of TiO₂ sample peptized with nitric acid is due to the effective transfer of photogenerated electrons between rutile and anatase phases.

Influence of Oxygen Vacancies on the Frictional Properties of Nanocrystalline Zinc Oxide Thin Films in Ambient Conditions

Oxygen vacancy is the most studied point defect and has been found to significantly influence the physical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO). By using atomic force microscopy (AFM), we show that the frictional properties on the ZnO surface at the nanoscale greatly depend on the amount of oxygen vacancies present in the surface layer and the ambient humidity. The photocatalytic effect (PCE) is used to qualitatively control the amount of oxygen vacancies in the surface layer of ZnO and reversibly switch the surface wettability between hydrophobic and superhydrophilic states. Because oxygen vacancies in the ZnO surface can attract ambient water molecules, during the AFM friction measurement, water meniscus can form between the asperities at the AFM tip-ZnO contact due to the capillary condensation, leading to negative dependence of friction on the logarithm of tip sliding velocity. Such dependence is found to be a strong function of relative humidity and can be reversibly manipulated by the PCE. Our results indicate that it is possible to control the frictional properties of ZnO surface at the nanoscale using optical approaches.
