Adsorption and radical stabilization of humic-Acid analogues and Pb2+ on restricted phyllomorphous clay

Adsorption effects and mechanisms of phosphorus by nanosized laponite

Phosphorus (P), an important macroelement for crops, may be lost into water systems by human activities and subsequently cause serious environmental problems such as eutrophication. Thus, the recovery of P from wastewater is essential. P can be adsorbed and recovered from wastewater using many natural, environmentally friendly clay minerals, however the adsorption ability is limited. Here we applied a synthesis nanosized clay mineral, laponite, to evaluate the P adsorption ability and molecular mechanisms of the adsorption process. We apply X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to observe the adsorption of inorganic phosphate onto laponite, and then measure the adsorption content of phosphate by laponite via batch experiments in different solution conditions, including pH, ionic species and concentrations. Then the molecular mechanisms of adsorption are analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and molecular modeling using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The results show that phosphate adsorbs to the surface and interlayer of laponite via hydrogen bonding, and the adsorption energies of the interlayer are greater than those of the surface. These bulk solution and molecular-scale results in a model system may provide new insights into the recovery of phosphorus by nanosized clay, with possible environmental engineering applications for P-pollution control and sustainable utilization of P sources.

Effects of Different Nanoparticles on Microbes

Nanoparticles widely exist in nature and may be formed through inorganic or organic pathways, exhibiting unique physical and chemical properties different from those of bulk materials. However, little is known about the potential consequences of nanomaterials on microbes in natural environments. Herein, we investigated the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles by performing experiments on the inhibition effects of gold, ludox and laponite nanoparticles on Escherichia coli in liquid Luria–Bertani (LB) medium at different nanoparticle concentrations. These nanoparticles were shown to be effective bactericides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed the distinct aggregation of cells and nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed considerable cell membrane disruption due to nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces, resulting in cell death. We hypothesized that this nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces not only disrupted the cell membranes but also physically blocked the microbes from accessing nutrients. An iron-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens, was tested for its ability to reduce the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite (HFO) or aqueous ferric citrate in the presence of laponite nanoparticles. It was found that the laponite nanoparticles inhibited the reduction of the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite. Moreover, direct contact between the cells and solid Fe (III) coated with the laponite nanoparticles was physically blocked, as confirmed by SEM images and particle size measurements. However, the laponite particles had an insignificant effect on the extent of aqueous Fe (III) bioreduction but slightly enhanced the rate of bioreduction of the Fe (III) in aqueous ferric citrate. The slightly increased rate of bioreduction by laponite nanoparticles may be due to the removal of inhibitory Fe (II) from the cell surface by its sorption onto the laponite nanoparticle surface. This result indicates that the scavenging of toxic heavy metals, such as Fe (II), by nanoparticles may be beneficial for microbes in the environment. On the other hand, microbial cells are also capable of detoxifying nanoparticles by coagulating nanoparticles with extracellular polymeric substances or by changing nanoparticle morphologies. Hence, the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles in natural environments should receive more attention.

Antioxidant Hydrogen-Atom-Transfer to DPPH Radicals by Hybrids of {Hyaluronic-Acid Components}@SiO2

Hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) is among the key mechanisms of antioxidant and antiradical activity in natural systems. Hyaluronic acid (HyA) is currently used extensively in health and cosmetics applications. Herein it is shown that {HyA@SiO₂} hybrids based on hyaluronic acid (HyA) components grafted on SiO₂ nanoparticles enable significant HAT activity versus DPPH radicals, while the homogeneous HyA counterparts are practically inactive. The {HyA@SiO₂} hybrids consist of the two building blocks of HyA [d-glucuronic acid (GLA) and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GLAM)] covalently grafted on SiO₂ nanoparticles. Based on the kinetic-thermodynamic Arrhenius study, we show that the {SiO₂@GLA} hybrids operate spontaneously via hydrogen-atom-transfer (HAT) with a low activation energy barrier, i.e., by ΔΕ_α ∼ 20 kJ/mol vs the nongrafted counterparts. Moreover, a doubly grafted {GLA@SiO₂@GLAM} nanohybrid, i.e. that contains both components of HyA, shows the most significant antioxidant activity. FTIR and Raman analysis reveal that local H-bonding between the SiO₂ matrix, GLA, and GLAM in {GLA@SiO₂@GLAM} decreases the activation barrier of the HAT mechanism. Thus, {GLA@SiO₂@GLAM} nanohybrids exemplify a novel family of materials that are not the mere sum of their components. The present case is the first example of non-phenolic molecules being able to perform antiradical HAT, opening new perspectives not foreseen until today.

Modulating lifetimes and relaxation times of phenoxyl radicals through their incorporation into different hybrid nanostructures

Playing with the structural features of various hybrid materials enables to adjust physical properties of phenoxyl radicals.

Top-down and bottom-up approaches to transparent, flexible and luminescent nitrogen-doped carbon nanodot-clay hybrid films

Two easy approaches are successfully employed for the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon nanodot (NCND)-clay hybrids (bulk solids and thin films). Fluorescent and small NCNDs are intercalated within the interlayer space of LAPONITE® clay with a simple ion exchange reaction in bulk or embedded between functionalized LAPONITE® sheets by combining a layer-by-layer approach with a self-assembly process. In both cases, homogeneous hybrids with 2D-ordered NCNDs (accounting for >20 wt%) are produced, with the NCND optoelectronic properties preserved. Drop casting of suspensions or self-assembly on flexible substrates allows the fabrication of luminescent flexible films. The transparency of the films is found to be adjustable either by controlling the concentration of the drop-cast suspensions or by the number of layers in the self-assembly procedure. The prepared films are stable over time: the inert LAPONITE® platelets not only guide the highly ordered 2D assemblies of NCNDs in the interlayer space but also protect them from external agents, which could affect their surfaces and thus alter their optoelectronic properties.

Oxidation of municipal wastewater by free radicals mechanism. A UV/Vis spectroscopy study

This study investigates the oxidation of municipal wastewater (WW) by complexation with natural polyphenols having radical scavenging activity, such as (3,4,5 tri-hydroxy-benzoic acid) gallic acid (GA) in alkaline pH (>7), under ambient O₂ and temperature. Physicochemical and structural characteristics of GA-WW complex-forming are evaluated by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The comparative analysis among UV/Vis spectra of GA monomer, GA-GA polymer, WW compounds, and GA-WW complex reveals significant differences within 350-450 and 500-900 nm. According to attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), these spectra differences correspond to distinct complexes formed. This study suggests a novel role of natural polyphenols on the degradation and humification of wastes.

Determination of genotoxic effects of methidathion alkaline hydrolysis in human lymphocytes using the micronucleus assay and square-wave voltammetry

The interaction of pesticides with environmental factors, such as pH, may result in alterations of their physicochemical properties and should be taken into consideration in regard to their classification. This study investigates the genotoxicity of methidathion and its alkaline hydrolysis by-products in cultured human lymphocytes, using the square-wave voltammetry (square wave-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (SW-AdCSV) technique) and the cytokinesis block micronucleus assay (CBMN assay). According to the SW-AdCSV data the alkaline hydrolysis of methidathion results in two new molecules, one non-electro-active and a second electro-active which is more genotoxic than methidathion itself in cultured human lymphocytes, inducing higher micronuclei frequencies. The present study confirms the SW-AdCSV technique as a voltammetric method which can successfully simulates the electrodynamics of the cellular membrane.

Experimental and molecular dynamic simulation study of perfluorooctane sulfonate adsorption on soil and sediment components

Soil and sediment play a crucial role in the fate and transport of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the environment. However, the molecular mechanisms of major soil/sediment components on PFOS adsorption remain unclear. This study experimentally isolated three major components in soil/sediment: humin/kerogen, humic/fulvic acid (HA/FA), and inorganic component after removing organics, and explored their contributions to PFOS adsorption using batch adsorption experiments and molecular dynamic simulations. The results suggest that the humin/kerogen component dominated the PFOS adsorption due to its aliphatic features where hydrophobic effect and phase transfer are the primary adsorption mechanism. Compared with the humin/kerogen, the HA/FA component contributed less to the PFOS adsorption because of its hydrophilic and polar characteristics. The electrostatic repulsion between the polar groups of HA/FA and PFOS anions was attributable to the reduced PFOS adsorption. When the soil organic matter was extracted, the inorganic component also plays a non-negligible role because PFOS molecules might form surface complexes on SiO2 surface. The findings obtained in this study illustrate the contribution of organic matters in soils and sediments to PFOS adsorption and provided new perspective to understanding the adsorption process of PFOS on micro-interface in the environment.

13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Electron Paramagnetic Spectroscopic Comparison of Hydrophobic Acid, Transphilic Acid, and Reverse Osmosis May 2012 Isolates of Organic Matter from the Suwannee River

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is found in most natural waters at concentrations low enough to make DOM isolation methodologies critical to full analytical characterization and preservation. During the last few decades, two major protocols have been developed for the extraction of DOM isolates from natural waters. These methods utilize XAD resins and reverse osmosis (RO). In this work, the hydrophobic acid (May 2012 HPOA) and transphilic acid (May 2012 TPIA) isolates from XAD-8 and XAD-4 resins, respectively, were compared with the RO (May 2012 RO) natural organic matter isolate of the Suwannee River water using ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. ¹³C NMR analysis showed that the May 2012 RO isolate could be viewed as a hybrid of the more hydrophobic May 2012 HPOA isolate and more hydrophilic May 2012 TPIA isolate. The May 2012 HPOA isolate is shown to be higher in alkyl and aromatic moieties, while the May 2012 TPIA isolate is higher in O-alkyl moieties. EPR analysis revealed that the May 2012 TPIA and, in particular, May 2012 HPOA isolates had higher radical concentrations than the May 2012 RO isolate. It is postulated that some of the radical concentrations came from the use of base during the isolation procedures, especially in the XAD method.

Bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles for selective colorimetric sensing of toxic metal ions and antimicrobial studies

Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Gongura) plant extracts (leaves (HL) and stem (HS)) were used for the first time in the green synthesis of bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The bio-functionality of AgNPs has been successfully utilized for selective colorimetric sensing of potentially health and environmentally hazardous Hg(2+), Cd(2+) and Pb(2+) metal ions at ppm level in aqueous solution. Importantly, clearly distinguishable colour for all three metal ions was observed. The influence of extract preparation condition and pH were also explored on the formation of AgNPs. Both selectivity and sensitivity differed for AgNPs synthesized from different parts of the plant. Direct correlation between the stability of green synthesized AgNPs at different pH and its antibacterial effects has been established. The selective colorimetric sensing of toxic metal ions and antimicrobial effect of green synthesized AgNPs demonstrated the multifunctional applications of green nanotechnology.

Janus-compartmental alginate microbeads having polydiacetylene liposomes and magnetic nanoparticles for visual lead(II) detection

Janus-compartmental alginate microbeads having two divided phases of sensory polydiacetylene (PDA) liposomes and magnetic nanoparticles were fabricated for facile sensory applications. The sensory liposomes are composed of PDA for label-free signal generation and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-galloyl (DPGG) lipids whose galloyl headgroup has specific interactions with lead(II). The second phase having magnetic nanoparticles is designed for convenient handling of the microbeads, such as washing, solvent exchange, stirring, and detection, by applying magnetic field. Selective and convenient colorimetric detection of lead(II) and efficient removal of lead(II) by alginate matrix at the same time are demonstrated.

A functionalized phosphonate-rich organosilica layered hybrid material (PSLM) fabricated through a mild process for heavy metal uptake

A phosphonate-rich organosilica layered hybrid material (PSLM) made of 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl methylphosphonate, monosodium salt, as the single silica source, has been obtained from its aqueous solution through a xerogel process and mild thermal aging. The method is simple, affording bulk quantities of powdered PSLM in a single-step. The hybrid is stable in water and possesses a high content of phosphonate groups fixed on the solid matrix. In addition, PSLM shows good thermal stability, which exceeds 300°C in air. The material was characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR and TGA techniques. Potentiometric titrations show that PSLM bears high-surface density of phosphonate groups (3 mmol g(-1)). As a result, the material displays high metal uptake capacity for heavy metal ions such as Cu(2+) (2.72mmolg(-1)), Pb(2+) (1.67 mmol g(-1)) and Cd(2+) (1.00 mmol g(-1)) at neutral pH values e.g. the pH of natural waters. Detailed theoretical modeling using a Surface Complexation Model combined with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy shows that the surface distribution of surface bound Cu(2+) ions is rather homogeneous e.g. copper-binding phosphonate sites are arranged in average distances 5-8Å.

Antioxidant and antiradical SiO2 nanoparticles covalently functionalized with gallic acid

Gallic acid (GA) and its derivatives are natural polyphenolic substances widely used as antioxidants in nutrients, medicine and polymers. Here, nanoantioxidant materials are engineered by covalently grafting GA on SiO(2) nanoparticles (NPs). A proof-of-concept is provided herein, using four types of well-characterized SiO(2) NPs of specific surface area (SSA) 96-352 m(2)/g. All such hybrid SiO(2)-GA NPs had the same surface density of GA molecules (~1 GA per nm(2)). The radical-scavenging capacity (RSC) of the SiO(2)-GA NPs was quantified in comparison with pure GA based on the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH(•)) radical method, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The scavenging of DPPH radicals by these nanoantioxidant SiO(2)-GA NPs showed mixed-phase kinetics: An initial fast-phase (t(1/2) <1 min) corresponding to a H-Atom Transfer (HAT) mechanism, followed by a slow-phase attributed to secondary radical-radical reactions. The slow-reactions resulted in radical-induced NP agglomeration, that was more prominent for high-SSA NPs. After their interaction with DPPH radicals, the nanoantioxidant particles can be reused by simple washing with no impairment of their RSC.

Mechanism of heavy metal uptake by a hybrid MCM-41 material: surface complexation and EPR spectroscopic study

A novel hybrid MCM-41-based material was synthesized by incorporation of AEDTC [N-(2-aminoethyl)dithiocarbamate] in the MCM-41 pores. The derived MCM-41 x AEDTC material possesses high AEDTC loading 35% [w:w], and a well-defined array of regular mesopores with a specific surface area of 632 m(2)/g. Heavy metal, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn, uptake was studied in detail at physiological pH values 6-8, by a combination of analytical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic techniques. The analytical data show a significant improvement, i.e., 200-500%, for Pb, Cu, and Zn uptake by the MCM-41 x AEDTC hybrid vs the unmodified MCM-41. In contrast, Cd shows an exceptional behavior: (a) Cd uptake by MCM-41 x AEDTC is very low. (b) Competitive metal uptake experiments reveal that Cd ions cause a characteristic inhibition of Cu or Pb uptake by the MCM-41 x AEDTC while Cd binding itself always remained low. The present findings are analyzed by a combination of surface complexation modeling and EPR spectroscopy. Accordingly, in the MCM-41 x AEDTC the sulfur atoms of AEDTC provide strong binding sites for metal binding, with a stoichiometry [S(AEDTC)]:[Metal] = 1:1. Cd inhibits accessibility of Cu or Pb ions in the AEDTC sites.

Photonic clays: a new family of functional 1D photonic crystals

Clays have shown potential as intelligent optical sensing platforms when integrated into a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) environment. The clay component imparts intrinsic functionality to the multilayer system by combining the signature ion exchange with the tunable structural color of photonic crystals, giving rise to environmentally sensitive photonic clay architectures. We have fabricated different Laponite-based 1D PCs and clay defect PCs by simple bottom-up self-assembly methodologies and elaborate their working principles and chemically encoded optical response. Accessibility of the multilayer system to analytes is studied on the background of the barrier properties of clays and diffusion control by the mesoporous oxide layers. The time dependence of analyte uptake and the extent and driving force for analyte release are pointed out and discussed in the context of different interactions between the clay layers and analytes. We demonstrate the possibility of optical cycling associated with repeated analyte uptake and removal processes, rendering photonic clays recyclable and low cost sensing platforms with simple optical read-out.

Physicochemical study of novel organoclays as heavy metal ion adsorbents for environmental remediation

Four organic-modified clays based on a SWy-2 montmorillonite were prepared by embedding ammonium organic derivatives with different chelating functionalities (NH(2), COOH, SH or CS(2)) in the interlayer space of montmorillonite. Organic molecules such as (a) hexamethylenediamine, (b) 2-(dimethylamino)ethenethiol, (c) 5-aminovaleric acid and (d) hexamethylenediamine-dithiocarbamate were used for the clay modification in order to study the effect of the chelating functionality on heavy metal ions binding from aqueous solutions. The organoclays were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (FTIR) and NMR spectroscopies. The experimental data showed that the organic molecules are intercalated into the interlamelar space with the long dimension parallel to the clay sheets. Their sorbing properties were evaluated for the removal of heavy metals, Pb, Cd and Zn, from aqueous solutions as a function of the pH. When compared with the unmodified SWy-2 montmorillonite, the modified clays show significant improvement in terms of sorbing selectivity as well as of metal loading capacity. The fit to adsorption data by a Surface Complexation Model shows that the intercalated molecules act as specific binding sites in the clay. These contribute additional sorption capacity which is additive to the variable charge edge-sites of the clay in competition with the permanent charge sites.

Effects of dissolved carbonates and carboxylates on the sorption of thiuram disulfide pesticides on humic acids and model surfaces

The sorption of a hydrophobic pesticide, thiram, on humic acid (HA) occurs via a specific pH-dependent binding of thiram at the deprotonated carboxylates of humic acid, forming a species thiram-[HACOO-] with K = 0.69. Similarly, thiram was sorbed by two model polycarboxylate-{SiO2COOH} materials via the formation of a surface species thiram-{SiO2COO-} with K = 0.45 between thiram and the eprotonated carboxylates grafted on SiO2 particles. In all cases, allowance of presence of bicarbonate at natural concentration caused severe inhibition of thiram's sorption. Oxalate and formate mimic the inhibitive effect of bicarbonate. Theoretical fit of the data showed that the inhibitive effect of HCO3- is due to the formation of the anionic species [thiram-HCO3](-1) (with K = 0.90) which is water soluble and competes with the bound species thiram-{HACOO-}. The same phenomena were observed for the sorption of disulfiram. The specific interaction phenomena reported here bear relevance to the sorption properties of thiram and disulfiram on real soils and, therefore, may determine their environmental fate.
