Hydrogen bonding effects in adsorption of water-alcohol mixtures in zeolites and the consequences for the characteristics of the Maxwell-Stefan diffusivities

Pervaporation Dehydration Mechanism and Performance of High-Aluminum ZSM-5 Zeolite Membranes for Organic Solvents

Membrane-based pervaporation (PV) for organic solvent dehydration is of great significance in the chemical and petrochemical industries. In this work, high-aluminum ZSM-5 zeolite membranes were synthesized by a fluoride-assisted secondary growth on α-alumina tubular supports using mordenite framework inverted (MFI) nanoseeds (~110 nm) and a template-free synthesis solution with a low Si/Al ratio of 10. Characterization by XRD, EDX, and SEM revealed that the prepared membrane was a pure-phase ZSM-5 zeolite membrane with a Si/Al ratio of 3.8 and a thickness of 2.8 µm. Subsequently, two categories of PV performance parameters (i.e., flux versus separation factor and permeance versus selectivity) were used to systematically examine the effects of operating conditions on the PV dehydration performance of different organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol), and their PV mechanisms were explored. Employing permeance and selectivity effectively disentangles the influence of operating conditions on PV performance, thereby elucidating the inherent contribution of membranes to separation performance. The results show that the mass transfer during PV dehydration of organic solvents was mainly dominated by the adsorption-diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the diffusion of highly polar water and methanol molecules within membrane pores had a strong mutual slowing-down effect, resulting in significantly lower permeance than other binary systems. However, the mass transfer process for water/low-polar organic solvent (ethanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol) mixtures was mainly controlled by competitive adsorption caused by affinity differences. In addition, the high-aluminum ZSM-5 zeolite membrane exhibited superior PV dehydration performance for water/isopropanol mixtures.

Synthesis optimization and separation mechanism of ZSM-5 zeolite membranes for pervaporation dehydration of organic solvents

Pervaporation (PV), as an energy-efficient mixture separation technology, plays an important role in the chemical industry. In this work, no organic templates were needed to produce high-performance ZSM-5 membranes with an extremely low Si/Al ratio of 3.3 on α-Al2O3 tubular supports using 100 nm nanoseeds. The effects of preparation parameters on the crystalline phase structures, micromorphologies, and PV separation performance of ZSM-5 membranes were comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that the Si/Al ratio of gels significantly affected both the Si/Al ratio and the crystal orientation of the final ZSM-5 membrane. The optimized ZSM-5 membrane with a thickness of 1.8 μm was utilized to dehydrate various organic solvents via PV, and the influence of the operating parameters on PV dehydration performance was evaluated and is described herein. Furthermore, the permeation behaviors of single gases and PV were examined using permeate molecules within a similar size range to reveal the PV mechanism of the ZSM-5 membrane. The results demonstrated that gas permeation followed Knudsen diffusion, while PV permeation was decreased with decreases in the affinity of molecules, revealing an adsorption-diffusion mechanism that dominated PV dehydration through the ZSM-5 membrane. Moreover, the as-synthesized ZSM-5 membrane had good water permselectivity for water/acetone (e.g., total flux = 1.03 kg/(m2 h), α = 307) and for water/isopropanol (e.g., total flux = 1.49 kg/(m2 h), α = 1070) mixtures compared with other membranes reviewed in the literature. The synthesized ZSM-5 membrane also exhibited excellent reproducibility, high stability, and attractive PV separation performance, demonstrating its significant potential application in the PV dehydration of organic solvents.

Toward the development of sensors for lung cancer: The adsorption of 1-propanol on hydrophobic zeolites

A healthy breath is mainly composed of water, carbon dioxide, molecular nitrogen, and oxygen and it contains many species, in small quantities, which are related to the ambient atmosphere and the metabolism. The breath of a person affected by lung cancer presents a concentration of 1-propanol higher than usual. In this context, the development of specific sensors to detect 1-propanol from breath is of high interest. The amount of propanol usually detected on the breath is of few ppb; this small quantity is a handicap for a reliable diagnostic. This limitation can be overcome if the sensor is equipped with a pre-concentrator. Our studies aim to provide an efficient material playing this role. This will contribute to the development of reliable and easy to use lung cancer detectors. For this, we investigate the properties of a few hydrophobic porous materials (chabazite, silicalite-1, and dealuminated faujasite). Hydrophobic structures are used to avoid saturation of materials by the water present in the exhaled breath. Our experimental and simulation results suggest that silicalite -1 (MFI) is the most suitable structure to be used as a pre-concentrator.

Structure and dynamics of a water/methanol mixture confined in zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 from atomistic simulations

A classical atomistic simulation study is reported for the microscopic structure and dynamics of a water/methanol mixture confined in flexible nanoporous zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. Both the radial density distribution and vivid two-dimensional density profile demonstrate that methanol molecules can roughly be viewed as "embedded" between two layers of water molecules to form a "sandwich" structure. The reason for the formation of such a specific structure is explained based on the hydrogen-bonding state and the strength of various hydrogen bonds. The investigation of guest molecular diffusion shows that the self-diffusion coefficient of confined water is generally one to two orders of magnitude smaller than that of bulk water. In addition, the dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient on loading is non-monotonic: the self-diffusion coefficient firstly shows a significant increase and then decreases at higher loading. Moreover, both the structure and dynamics of the hydrogen bond (HB) network of confined water molecules are investigated in a spatially resolved manner. The results indicate that both the HB structure and dynamics of water molecules near the ZIF-8 surface deviate significantly from those of bulk water. However, while water molecules located at the pore center are relatively similar to bulk water molecules with respect to the HB structure, they exhibit strong slowdown in HB dynamics when compared with bulk water. This simulation study elucidates in detail the structural and dynamical properties of a water/methanol mixture in nanoscopic ZIF-8 confinement, which is expected to provide a deep insight into the role of porous fillers, such as ZIF-8, in improving the performance of the dehydration of alcohols via pervaporation and other related processes.

Influence of solvent structure and hydrogen bonding on catalysis at solid-liquid interfaces

Solvent molecules interact with reactive species and alter the rates and selectivities of catalytic reactions by orders of magnitude. Specifically, solvent molecules can modify the free energies of liquid phase and surface species via solvation, participating directly as a reactant or co-catalyst, or competitively binding to active sites. These effects carry consequences for reactions relevant for the conversion of renewable or recyclable feedstocks, the development of distributed chemical manufacturing, and the utilization of renewable energy to drive chemical reactions. First, we describe the quantitative impact of these effects on steady-state catalytic turnover rates through a rate expression derived for a generic catalytic reaction (A → B), which illustrates the functional dependence of rates on each category of solvent interaction. Second, we connect these concepts to recent investigations of the effects of solvents on catalysis to show how interactions between solvent and reactant molecules at solid-liquid interfaces influence catalytic reactions. This discussion demonstrates that the design of effective liquid phase catalytic processes benefits from a clear understanding of these intermolecular interactions and their implications for rates and selectivities.

How Reliable Is the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory for the Estimation of Mixture Separation Selectivities in Microporous Crystalline Adsorbents?

Microporous crystalline adsorbents such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential use in a wide variety of separation applications. The adsorption selectivity S _ads is a key metric that quantifies the efficacy of any microporous adsorbent in mixture separations. The Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) is commonly used for estimating the value of S _ads, with unary isotherms of the constituent guests as data inputs. There are two basic tenets underlying the development of the IAST. The first tenet mandates a homogeneous distribution of adsorbates within the pore landscape. The second tenet requires the surface area occupied by a guest molecule in the mixture to be the same as that for the corresponding pure component. Configurational-bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations are employed in this article to highlight several scenarios in which the IAST fails to provide a quantitatively correct description of mixture adsorption equilibrium due to a failure to conform to either of the two tenets underpinning the IAST. For CO₂ capture with cation-exchanged zeolites and MOFs with open metal sites, there is congregation of CO₂ around the cations and unsaturated metal atoms, resulting in failure of the IAST due to an inhomogeneous distribution of adsorbates in the pore space. Thermodynamic non-idealities also arise due to the preferential location of CO₂ molecules at the window regions of 8-ring zeolites such as DDR and CHA or within pockets of MOR and AFX zeolites. Thermodynamic non-idealities are evidenced for water/alcohol mixtures due to molecular clustering engendered by hydrogen bonding. It is also demonstrated that thermodynamic non-idealities can be strong enough to cause selectivity reversals, which are not anticipated by the IAST.

Pervaporative Dehydration of Organic Solvents Using High-Silica CHA-Type Zeolite Membrane

A high-silica chabazite (CHA) type zeolite membrane was prepared on the porous α-Al₂O₃ support tube by the secondary growth of seed particles. The dehydration performances of the membrane were determined using methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), tetrahydrofuran (THF), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N-methyl-2-pyrolidone (NMP) at 303–373 K. As a result, the dehydration performances of the membrane were categorized to following three types: (1) 2-propanol, acetone, THF, and MEK; (2) ethanol and acetic acid; and (3) methanol, DMF, and DMSO, and NMP. The adsorption isotherms of water, methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol were determined to discuss the influences of the organic solvents on the permeation and separation performances of the membrane. For 2-propanol, acetone, MEK, and THF solutions, the high permeation fluxes and separation factors were obtained because of the preferential adsorption of water due to molecular sieving. In contrast, the permeation fluxes and separation factors were relatively low for methanol, DMF, and DMSO, and NMP solutions. The lower dehydration performance for the methanol solution was due to the adsorption of methanol. The permeation fluxes for ethanol and acetic acid solution were ca. 1 kg m⁻² h⁻¹. The significantly low flux was attributed to the similar molecular diameter to the micropore size of CHA-type zeolite.

Correlation between the Bacteriostatic and Bactericide Effect with Antibiofilm and Anticolony Spreading from Javanese Citronella Oil on Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogenic bacterium that has been resistant to various types of antibiotics, so it is not easy to be treated with antibiotics and needs other solutions. Javanese citronella oil distilled from the Cymbopogon nardus plant is proven to function as an antibacterial agent (bacteriostatic and bactericidal), fungicide and repellent. This study aimed to prove that there is a positive correlation between bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects with antibiofilm and anticolony spreading from Javanese citronella oil on MRSA. The intended antibiofilm is a barrier to biofilm formation and eradication. Bacteriostatic and antibiofilm effects were tested using microtiter plates assay, bactericidal effect test with subculture into the media and anticolony spreading effect test with spot inoculation in Tryptic Soy Broth media supplemented with 0.24% agar. The bacteriostatic effect test data were analyzed using paired t-test, bactericidal effect using the Friedman test, antibiofilm effect test using Kruskall-Wallis and the results of all the tests correlated using Pearson and Spearman correlation. The statistical significance used was p<0.05. The results showed that Javanese citronella oil had a bacteriostatic concentration of 0.02% (v/v) and bactericidal concentration of 0.78% (v/v). The Pearson correlation test showed that there was a negative correlation between bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects on biofilm formation with r = -0.956 (p = 0.000), but the correlation was positive for biofilm eradication with r = 0.918 (p = 0.000) and anticolony spreading with r = 1.000 (p = 0.000).

Modeling the transport of CO2, N2, and their binary mixtures through highly permeable silicalite-1 membranes using Maxwell-Stefan equations

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the main contributor to global warming; therefore, research efforts aim at its capture. Membranes, in particular, zeolite membranes offer a promising approach for CO₂ separation and capture. Membranes are typically characterized by their selectivity and permeance that are highly dependent on the operating conditions namely, total feed pressure and composition. Therefore, more reliable characterization parameters are required such as Maxwell- Stefan exchange diffusivities. In this work, a model based on Maxwell-Stefan equations and Extended Langmuir isotherm was developed to investigate the transport of binary mixtures of CO₂ and N₂ through thin silicalite-1 membranes. The exchange diffusivities, D₁₂ and D₂₁, of CO₂ and N₂ were determined at different total feed pressures and feed compositions. All gas separation tests were conducted at stage cut not exceeding 5%. The single component diffusivities of CO₂ and N₂ required by the model were found experimentally using the results of the respective single gas permeation tests. The results displayed that as CO₂ concentration in the feed increased from 15% to 85%, the values of D₁₂ and D₂₁ decreased from 2.8 × 10^-10 to 1.1 × 10^-10 m²/s and 2.8 × 10^-10 to 1.3 × 10^-10 m²/s, respectively, while the N₂ permeance decreased by about one order of magnitude from 2.7 × 10^-7 to 2.4 × 10^-8 mol/m².s.Pa. Consequently, the exchange diffusivities showed considerably smaller dependence on the operating conditions compared to the permselectivity and permeance. Hence, they are more appropriate in describing the intrinsic transport characteristics of silicalite-1 membranes.

Using Molecular Simulations to Unravel the Benefits of Characterizing Mixture Permeation in Microporous Membranes in Terms of the Spreading Pressure

The separation performance of microporous crystalline materials in membrane constructs is dictated by a combination of mixture adsorption and intracrystalline diffusion characteristics; the permeation selectivity S _perm is a product of the adsorption selectivity S _ads and the diffusion selectivity, S _diff. The primary objective of this article is to gain fundamental insights into S _ads and S _diff by use of molecular simulations. We performed configurational-bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations of mixture adsorption equilibrium and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of guest self-diffusivities of a number of binary mixtures of light gaseous molecules (CO₂, CH₄, N₂, H₂, and C₂H₆) in a variety of microporous hosts of different pore dimensions and topologies. Irrespective of the bulk gas compositions and bulk gas fugacities, the adsorption selectivity, S _ads, is found to be uniquely determined by the adsorption potential, Φ, a convenient and practical proxy for the spreading pressure π that is calculable using the ideal adsorbed solution theory for mixture adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption potential Φ is also a proxy for the pore occupancy and is the thermodynamically appropriate yardstick to determine the loading and composition dependences of intracrystalline diffusivities and diffusion selectivities, S _diff. When compared at the same Φ, the component permeabilities, Π _i for CO₂, CH₄, and N₂, determinable from CBMC/MD data, are found to be independent of the partners in the various mixtures investigated and have practically the same values as the values for the corresponding unary permeabilities. In all investigated systems, the H₂ permeability in a mixture is significantly lower than the corresponding unary value. These reported results have important practical consequences in process development and are also useful for screening of materials for use as membrane devices.

Influence of Topology and Brønsted Acid Site Presence on Methanol Diffusion in Zeolites Beta and MFI

Detailed insight into molecular diffusion in zeolite frameworks is crucial for the analysis of the factors governing their catalytic performance in methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) reactions. In this work, we present a molecular dynamics study of the diffusion of methanol in all-silica and acidic zeolite MFI and Beta frameworks over the range of temperatures 373–473 K. Owing to the difference in pore dimensions, methanol diffusion is more hindered in H-MFI, with diffusion coefficients that do not exceed 10 × 10−10 m2s−1. In comparison, H-Beta shows diffusivities that are one to two orders of magnitude larger. Consequently, the activation energy of translational diffusion can reach 16 kJ·mol−1 in H-MFI, depending on the molecular loading, against a value for H-Beta that remains between 6 and 8 kJ·mol−1. The analysis of the radial distribution functions and the residence time at the Brønsted acid sites shows a greater probability for methylation of the framework in the MFI structure compared to zeolite Beta, with the latter displaying a higher prevalence for methanol clustering. These results contribute to the understanding of the differences in catalytic performance of zeolites with varying micropore dimensions in MTH reactions.

Water/Alcohol Mixture Adsorption in Hydrophobic Materials: Enhanced Water Ingress Caused by Hydrogen Bonding

Microporous crystalline porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have potential use for separating water/alcohol mixtures in fixed bed adsorbers and membrane permeation devices. For recovery of alcohols present in dilute aqueous solutions, the adsorbent materials need to be hydrophobic in order to prevent the ingress of water. The primary objective of this article is to investigate the accuracy of ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for prediction of water/alcohol mixture adsorption in hydrophobic adsorbents. For this purpose, configurational bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations are used to determine the component loadings for adsorption equilibrium of water/methanol and water/ethanol mixtures in all-silica zeolites (CHA, DDR, and FAU) and ZIF-8. Due to the occurrence of strong hydrogen bonding between water and alcohol molecules and attendant clustering, IAST fails to provide quantitative estimates of the component loadings and the adsorption selectivity. For a range of operating conditions, the water loading in the adsorbed phase may exceed that of pure water by one to two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the occurrence of water-alcohol clusters moderates size entropy effects that prevail under pore saturation conditions. For quantitative modeling of the CBMC, simulated data requires the application of real adsorbed solution theory by incorporation of activity coefficients, suitably parameterized by the Margules model for the excess Gibbs free energy of adsorption.

Metrics for Evaluation and Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Applications in Mixture Separations

For mixture separations, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of practical interest. Such separations are carried out in fixed bed adsorption devices that are commonly operated in a transient mode, utilizing the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology, consisting of adsorption and desorption cycles. The primary objective of this article is to provide an assessment of the variety of metrics that are appropriate for screening and ranking MOFs for use in fixed bed adsorbers. By detailed analysis of several mixture separations of industrial significance, it is demonstrated that besides the adsorption selectivity, the performance of a specific MOF in PSA separation technologies is also dictated by a number of factors that include uptake capacities, intracrystalline diffusion influences, and regenerability. Low uptake capacities often reduce the efficacy of separations of MOFs with high selectivities. A combined selectivity-capacity metric, Δq, termed as the separation potential and calculable from ideal adsorbed solution theory, quantifies the maximum productivity of a component that can be recovered in either the adsorption or desorption cycle of transient fixed bed operations. As a result of intracrystalline diffusion limitations, the transient breakthroughs have distended characteristics, leading to diminished productivities in a number of cases. This article also highlights the possibility of harnessing intracrystalline diffusion limitations to reverse the adsorption selectivity; this strategy is useful for selective capture of nitrogen from natural gas.

Highlighting Thermodynamic Coupling Effects in Alcohol/Water Pervaporation across Polymeric Membranes

The pervaporation of binary alcohol/water mixtures across polymeric membranes is modeled by combining the Maxwell-Stefan (M-S) diffusion formulation with the Flory-Huggins (F-H) description of sorption equilibrium. The combined M-S/F-H model shows that the flux of each penetrant species is coupled to the driving force of its partner penetrant. Two types of coupling contributions can be distinguished: (i) coupling arising out of correlated motions of penetrants in the polymer matrix and (ii) thermodynamic coupling. The focus of this article is on the contribution of thermodynamic coupling, which is quantified by the set of coefficients , where a _i , the activity of species i, is dependent on the volume fractions ϕ _i ,ϕ _j , of both penetrants in the polymeric membrane. Detailed analyses of published experimental data for pervaporation of ethanol/water feed mixtures of varying compositions in both hydrophobic (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) and hydrophilic (cellulose acetate, polyimide, and polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylonitrile composite) membranes show that in all cases, the cross-coefficients Γ _ij (i ≠ j) are negative and may attain large magnitudes in relation to the diagonal elements Γ _ii . The net result is that the permeation fluxes of each penetrant are suppressed by its partner, resulting in mutual slowing down of permeation fluxes. If thermodynamic coupling effects are ignored, significantly higher fluxes are anticipated than those that are experimentally observed.

Thermodynamically Consistent Methodology for Estimation of Diffusivities of Mixtures of Guest Molecules in Microporous Materials

The Maxwell-Stefan (M-S) formulation, that is grounded in the theory of irreversible thermodynamics, is widely used for describing mixture diffusion in microporous crystalline materials such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Binary mixture diffusion is characterized by a set of three M-S diffusivities: Đ ₁, Đ ₂, and Đ ₁₂. The M-S diffusivities Đ ₁ and Đ ₂ characterize interactions of guest molecules with pore walls. The exchange coefficient Đ ₁₂ quantifies correlation effects that result in slowing-down of the more mobile species due to correlated molecular jumps with tardier partners. The primary objective of this article is to develop a methodology for estimating Đ ₁, Đ ₂, and Đ ₁₂ using input data for the constituent unary systems. The dependence of the unary diffusivities Đ ₁ and Đ ₂ on the pore occupancy, θ, is quantified using the quasi-chemical theory that accounts for repulsive, or attractive, forces experienced by a guest molecule with the nearest neighbors. For binary mixtures, the same occupancy dependence of Đ ₁ and Đ ₂ is assumed to hold; in this case, the occupancy, θ, is calculated using the ideal adsorbed solution theory. The exchange coefficient Đ ₁₂ is estimated from the data on unary self-diffusivities. The developed estimation methodology is validated using a large data set of M-S diffusivities determined from molecular dynamics simulations for a wide variety of binary mixtures (H₂/CO₂, Ne/CO₂, CH₄/CO₂, CO₂/N₂, H₂/CH₄, H₂/Ar, CH₄/Ar, Ne/Ar, CH₄/C₂H₆, CH₄/C₃H₈, and C₂H₆/C₃H₈) in zeolites (MFI, BEA, ISV, FAU, NaY, NaX, LTA, CHA, and DDR) and MOFs (IRMOF-1, CuBTC, and MgMOF-74).

Deep neural network learning of complex binary sorption equilibria from molecular simulation data

We employed deep neural networks (NNs) as an efficient and intelligent surrogate of molecular simulations for complex sorption equilibria using probabilistic modeling. Canonical (N ₁ N ₂ VT) Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations were performed to model a single-stage equilibrium desorptive drying process for (1,4-butanediol or 1,5-pentanediol)/water and 1,5-pentanediol/ethanol from all-silica MFI zeolite and 1,5-pentanediol/water from all-silica LTA zeolite. A multi-task deep NN was trained on the simulation data to predict equilibrium loadings as a function of thermodynamic state variables. The NN accurately reproduces simulation results and is able to obtain a continuous isotherm function. Its predictions can be therefore utilized to facilitate optimization of desorption conditions, which requires a laborious iterative search if undertaken by simulation alone. Furthermore, it learns information about the binary sorption equilibria as hidden layer representations. This allows for application of transfer learning with limited data by fine-tuning a pretrained NN for a different alkanediol/solvent/zeolite system.

Adsorption of water, methanol, and their mixtures in slit graphite pores

The behavior of water, methanol, and water-methanol mixtures confined in narrow slit graphite pores as a function of pore size was investigated by Monte Carlo, hybrid Monte Carlo, and Molecular Dynamics simulations. Interactions were described using TIP4P/2005 for water, OPLS/2016 for methanol, and cross interactions fitted to excess water/methanol properties over the whole range of concentrations, which provide a rather accurate description of water-methanol mixtures. As expected for hydrophobic pores, whereas pure methanol is adsorbed already from the gas phase, pure water only enters the pore at pressures well beyond bulk saturation for all pore sizes considered. When adsorbed from a mixture, however, water adsorbs at much lower pressures due to the formation of hydrogen bonds with previously adsorbed methanol molecules. For all studied compositions and pore sizes, methanol adsorbs preferentially over water at liquid-vapor equilibrium conditions. In pure components, both water and methanol are microscopically structured in layers, the number of layers increasing with pore size. This is also the case in adsorbed mixtures, in which methanol has a higher affinity for the walls. This becomes more evident as the pore widens. Diffusion of pure water is higher than that of pure methanol for all pore sizes due to the larger size of the methyl group. In mixtures, both components present similar diffusivities at all pore sizes, which is explained in terms of the coupling of molecular movements due to strong hydrogen bonding between methanol and water molecules. This is particularly evident in very narrow pores, in which pure methanol diffusion is completely impeded on the time scale of our simulations, but the presence of a small amount of water molecules facilitates alcohol diffusion following a single-file mechanism. Additionally, our results indicate that pure water diffusivities display a non-monotonous dependence of pore size, due to effects of confinement (proximity to a fluid-solid-fluid transition induced by confinement as reported in previous work) and the dynamic anomalies of water.

Integrated Vacuum Stripping and Adsorption for the Efficient Recovery of (Biobased) 2-Butanol

Biobased 2-butanol offers high potential as biofuel, but its toxicity toward microbial hosts calls for efficient techniques to alleviate product inhibition in fermentation processes. Aiming at the selective recovery of 2-butanol, the feasibility of a process combining in situ vacuum stripping followed by vapor adsorption has been assessed using mimicked fermentation media. The experimental vacuum stripping of model solutions and corn stover hydrolysate closely aligned with mass transfer model predictions. However, the presence of lignocellulosic impurities affected 2-butanol recovery yields resulting from vapor condensation, which decreased from 96 wt % in model solutions to 40 wt % using hydrolysate. For the selective recovery of 2-butanol from a vapor mixture enriched in water and carbon dioxide, silicalite materials were the most efficient, particularly at low alcohol partial pressures. Integrating in situ vacuum stripping with vapor adsorption using HiSiv3000 proved useful to effectively concentrate 2-butanol above its azeotropic composition (>68 wt %), facilitating further product purification.

Vapor- and Liquid-Phase Adsorption of Alcohol and Water in Silicalite-1 Synthesized in Fluoride Media

In this work, batch-adsorption experiments and molecular simulations are employed to probe the adsorption of binary mixtures containing ethanol or a linear alkane-1,n-diol solvated in water or ethanol onto silicate-1. Since the batch-adsorption experiments require an additional relationship to determine the amount of solute (and solvent adsorbed, as only the bulk liquid reservoir can be probed directly, molecular simulations are used to provide a relationship between solute and solvent adsorption for input to the experimental bulk measurements. The combination of bulk experimental measurements and simulated solute-solvent relationship yields solvent and solute loadings that are self-consistent with simulation alone, and allow for an assessment of the various assumptions made in literature. At low solution concentrations, the solute loading calculated is independent of the assumption made. At high concentrations, a negligent choice of assumption can lead to systematic overestimation or underestimation of calculated solute loading.

Occupancy Dependency of Maxwell-Stefan Diffusivities in Ordered Crystalline Microporous Materials

Molecular dynamics simulation data for a variety of binary guest mixtures (H₂/CO₂, Ne/CO₂, CH₄/CO₂, CO₂/N₂, H₂/CH₄, H₂/Ar, CH₄/Ar, Ar/Kr, Ne/Ar, CH₄/C₂H₆, CH₄/C₃H₈, C₂H₆C₃H₈, CH₄/nC₄H₁₀, and CH₄/nC₅H₁₁) in zeolites (MFI, BEA, ISV, FAU (all-silica), NaY, NaX, LTA, CHA, DDR) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (IRMOF-1, CuBTC, MgMOF-74) show that the Maxwell-Stefan (M-S) diffusivities, Đ ₁, Đ ₂, Đ ₁₂, are strongly dependent on the molar loadings. The main aim of this article is to develop a fundamental basis for describing the loading dependence of M-S diffusivities. Using the ideal adsorbed solution theory, a thermodynamically rigorous definition of the occupancy, θ, is derived; this serves as a convenient proxy for the spreading pressure, π, and provides the correct metric to describe the loading dependence of diffusivities. Configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations of the unary adsorption isotherms are used for the calculation of the spreading pressure, π, and occupancy, θ. The M-S diffusivity, Đ _i , of either constituent in binary mixtures has the same value as that for unary diffusion, provided the comparison is made at the same θ. Furthermore, compared at the same value of θ, the M-S diffusivity Đ _i of any component in a mixture does not depend on it partner species. The Đ _i versus θ dependence is amenable to simple interpretation using lattice-models. The degree of correlations, defined by the ratio Đ ₁/Đ ₁₂, that characterizes mixture diffusion shows a linear increase with occupancy θ, implying that correlations become increasingly important as pore saturation conditions are approached.

Study of Short-Chain Alcohol and Alcohol-Water Adsorption in MEL and MFI Zeolites

In this paper, we present a comparative study of the adsorption behavior of short chain alcohols (pure and in aqueous solution) into silicalite-1 (MFI-type zeolite) and silicalite-2 (MEL-type zeolite). For quite some time, silicalite-1 has been the reference material to address the problem of adsorptive-based separation, mostly for hydrocarbon mixtures. Interestingly, being structurally close to silicalite-1, adsorption studies using silicalite-2 are scarce and to the best of our knowledge, a comparative study of their behavior for alcohol-water mixtures has not been published to date. We have here resorted to molecular simulation techniques to analyze the adsorption and diffusion phenomena in both zeolites at 25 and 50 °C for pure methanol, ethanol, 1-butanol, and water, and for some relevant compositions of alcohol/water mixtures. In addition to the dilute regime in the mixture, our study ranges from intermediate alcohol concentrations to alcohol-rich phases, relevant to alcohol purification processes. Besides, we have performed volumetric and calorimetric measurements of single-component adsorption of alcohols in pure silica MEL zeolite, which were used to validate the model potentials used in the simulations. We observe that the zigzag channels of MFI zeolite are most likely responsible for its somewhat higher affinity for alcohols. This leads to higher adsorption selectivities when compared to those of MEL zeolite. We have also found that the choice of water model strongly conditions water coadsorption into the zeolites and subsequently the predictions of the adsorbent's selectivity in alcohol/water systems. Despite considerable differences for adsorbed pure components, diffusivities of alcohol and water adsorbed from mixtures are relatively similar, as a consequence of the strong hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and water.

Recovery of ammonium from aqueous solutions using ZSM-5

The demand of reactive nitrogen (N), such as ammonium (NH₄⁺) and nitrate (NO₃^-), continues to increase for fertilizer applications as the population grows, but the Haber Bosch (HB) process currently employed for industrial N fixation is challenged by low efficiency and high energy consumption. Here we report on the investigation of ZSM-5 as a superior sorbent for the recovery of ammonium from aqueous solutions. Fast capture and release of ammonium (NH₄⁺) have been achieved with >90% overall efficiency of recovery using synthetic solutions of NH₄Cl and NaCl, respectively. The ZSM-5 sorbent has also been found to be recyclable and sustain high recovery efficiencies after multiple capture-release cycles. The capture of N has been further studied systematically in dependence of the dose of sorbent and reaction temperature, based on which the mechanism, thermodynamics and kinetics of ion exchange are discussed. Compared to other ion-exchange materials, the ZSM-5 sorbent exhibits superior selectivity for capturing ammonium in the presence of competing cations (NH₄⁺ » Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ > K⁺ > Na⁺) and demonstrates high efficiency of ammonium recovery from real wastewater streams.

Comparative Study of the Effect of Defects on Selective Adsorption of Butanol from Butanol/Water Binary Vapor Mixtures in Silicalite-1 Films

A promising route for sustainable 1-butanol (butanol) production is ABE (acetone, butanol, ethanol) fermentation. However, recovery of the products is challenging because of the low concentrations obtained in the aqueous solution, thus hampering large-scale production of biobutanol. Membrane and adsorbent-based technologies using hydrophobic zeolites are interesting alternatives to traditional separation techniques (e.g., distillation) for energy-efficient separation of butanol from aqueous mixtures. To maximize the butanol over water selectivity of the material, it is important to reduce the number of hydrophilic adsorption sites. This can, for instance, be achieved by reducing the density of lattice defect sites where polar silanol groups are found. The density of silanol defects can be reduced by preparing the zeolite at neutral pH instead of using traditional synthesis solutions with high pH. In this work, binary adsorption of butanol and water in two silicalite-1 films was studied using in situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy under equal experimental conditions. One of the films was prepared in fluoride medium, whereas the other one was prepared at high pH using traditional synthesis conditions. The amounts of water and butanol adsorbed from binary vapor mixtures of varying composition were determined at 35 and 50 °C, and the corresponding adsorption selectivities were also obtained. Both samples showed very high selectivities (100-23 000) toward butanol under the conditions studied. The sample having low density of defects, in general, showed ca. a factor 10 times higher butanol selectivity than the sample having a higher density of defects at the same experimental conditions. This difference was due to a much lower adsorption of water in the sample with low density of internal defects. Analysis of molecular simulation trajectories provides insights on the local selectivities in the zeolite channel network and at the film surface.

Intensified Biobutanol Recovery by using Zeolites with Complementary Selectivity

A vapor-phase adsorptive recovery process is proposed as an alternative way to isolate biobutanol from acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation media, offering several advantages compared to liquid phase separation. The effect of water, which is still present in large quantities in the vapor phase, on the adsorption of the organics could be minimized by using hydrophobic zeolites. Shape-selective all-silica zeolites CHA and LTA were prepared and evaluated with single-component isotherms and breakthrough experiments. These zeolites show opposite selectivities; adsorption of ethanol is favorable on all-silica CHA, whereas the LTA topology has a clear preference for butanol. The molecular sieving properties of both zeolites allow easy elimination of acetone from the mixture. The molecular interaction mechanisms are studied by density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The effects of mixture composition, humidity and total pressure of the vapor stream on the selectivity and separation behavior are investigated. Desorption profiles are studied to maximize butanol purity and recovery. The combination of LTA with CHA-type zeolites (Si-CHA or SAPO-34) in sequential adsorption columns with alternating adsorption and desorption steps allows butanol to be recovered in unpreceded purity and yield. A butanol purity of 99.7 mol % could be obtained at nearly complete butanol recovery, demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique for biobutanol separation processes.

A Review of Biorefinery Separations for Bioproduct Production via Thermocatalytic Processing

With technological advancement of thermocatalytic processes for valorizing renewable biomass carbon, development of effective separation technologies for selective recovery of bioproducts from complex reaction media and their purification becomes essential. The high thermal sensitivity of biomass intermediates and their low volatility and high reactivity, along with the use of dilute solutions, make the bioproducts separations energy intensive and expensive. Novel separation techniques, including solvent extraction in biphasic systems and reactive adsorption using zeolite and carbon sorbents, membranes, and chromatography, have been developed. In parallel with experimental efforts, multiscale simulations have been reported for predicting solvent selection and adsorption separation. We discuss various separations that are potentially valuable to future biorefineries and the factors controlling separation performance. Particular emphasis is given to current gaps and opportunities for future development.

Separation of benzene from mixtures with water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone: highlighting hydrogen bonding and molecular clustering influences in CuBTC

Configurational-bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations are used to establish the potential of CuBTC for separation of water/benzene, methanol/benzene, ethanol/benzene, and acetone/benzene mixtures. For operations under pore saturation conditions, the separations are in favor of molecules that partner benzene; this is due to molecular packing effects that disfavor benzene. CBMC simulations for adsorption of quaternary water/methanol/ethanol/benzene mixtures show that water can be selectively adsorbed at pore saturation, making CuBTC effective in drying applications. Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) calculations anticipate the right hierarchy of component loadings but the quantitative agreement with CBMC mixture simulations is poor for all investigated mixtures. The failure of the IAST to provide reasonable quantitative predictions of mixture adsorption is attributable to molecular clustering effects that are induced by hydrogen bonding between water-water, methanol-methanol, and ethanol-ethanol molecule pairs. There is, however, no detectable hydrogen bonding between benzene and partner molecules in the investigated mixtures. As a consequence of molecular clustering, the activity coefficients of benzene in the mixtures is lowered below unity by one to three orders of magnitude at pore saturation; such drastic reductions cannot be adequately captured by the Wilson model, that does not explicitly account for molecular clustering. Molecular clustering effects are also shown to influence the loading dependence of the diffusivities of guest molecules.

Separating mixtures by exploiting molecular packing effects in microporous materials

We examine mixture separations with microporous adsorbents such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), operating under conditions close to pore saturation. Pore saturation is realized, for example, when separating bulk liquid phase mixtures of polar compounds such as water, alcohols and ketones. For the operating conditions used in industrial practice, pore saturation is also attained in separations of hydrocarbon mixtures such as xylene isomers and hexane isomers. Separations under pore saturation conditions are strongly influenced by differences in the saturation capacities of the constituent species; the adsorption is often in favor of the component with the higher saturation capacity. Effective separations are achieved by exploiting differences in the efficiency with which molecules pack within the ordered crystalline porous materials. For mixtures of chain alcohols, the shorter alcohol can be preferentially adsorbed because of its higher saturation capacity. With hydrophilic adsorbents, water can be selectively adsorbed from water-alcohol mixtures. For separations of o-xylene-m-xylene-p-xylene mixtures, the pore dimensions of MOFs can be tailored in such a manner as to allow optimal packing of the isomer that needs to be adsorbed preferentially. Subtle configurational differences between linear and branched alkane isomers result in significantly different packing efficiencies within the pore topology of MFI, AFI, ATS, and CFI zeolites. A common characteristic feature of most separations that are reliant on molecular packing effects is that adsorption and intra-crystalline diffusion are synergistic; this enhances the separation efficiencies in fixed bed adsorbers.

Zeolite membranes – a review and comparison with MOFs

The latest developments in zeolite and MOF membranes are reviewed, with an emphasis on synthesis techniques. Industrial applications, hydrothermal stability, polymer-supported and mixed matrix membranes are some of the aspects discussed.

Influence of water on the retention of methyl tertiary-butyl ether by high silica ZSM-5 and Y zeolites: a multidisciplinary study on the adsorption from liquid and gas phase

Ambient temperature adsorption isotherms have been determined for methyltert-butyl ether (MTBE) in aqueous solutions on high silica ZSM-5 and Y zeolites which differ from each other in framework topology and pore window apertures.

Diffusion of interacting particles in discrete geometries: Equilibrium and dynamical properties

We expand on a recent study of a lattice model of interacting particles [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 110601 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.111.110601]. The adsorption isotherm and equilibrium fluctuations in particle number are discussed as a function of the interaction. Their behavior is similar to that of interacting particles in porous materials. Different expressions for the particle jump rates are derived from transition-state theory. Which expression should be used depends on the strength of the interparticle interactions. Analytical expressions for the self- and transport diffusion are derived when correlations, caused by memory effects in the environment, are neglected. The diffusive behavior is studied numerically with kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations, which reproduces the diffusion including correlations. The effect of correlations is studied by comparing the analytical expressions with the kMC simulations. It is found that the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion can exceed the self-diffusion. To our knowledge, this is the first time this is observed. The diffusive behavior in one-dimensional and higher-dimensional systems is qualitatively the same, with the effect of correlations decreasing for increasing dimension. The length dependence of both the self- and transport diffusion is studied for one-dimensional systems. For long lengths the self-diffusion shows a 1/L dependence. Finally, we discuss when agreement with experiments and simulations can be expected. The assumption that particles in different cavities do not interact is expected to hold quantitatively at low and medium particle concentrations if the particles are not strongly interacting.
