A New Strategy to Microporous Polymers: Knitting Rigid Aromatic Building Blocks by External Cross-Linker

Constructing Microporous Ion Exchange Membranes via Simple Hypercrosslinking for pH-Neutral Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) play a critical role in aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs). Traditional IEMs that feature microphase-separated microstructures are well-developed and easily available but suffer from the conductivity/selectivity tradeoff. The emerging charged microporous polymer membranes show the potential to overcome this tradeoff, yet their commercialization is still hindered by tedious syntheses and demanding conditions. We herein combine the advantages of these two types of membrane materials via simple in situ hypercrosslinking of conventional IEMs into microporous ones. Such a concept is exemplified by the very cheap commercial quaternized polyphenylene oxide membrane. The hypercrosslinking treatment turns poor-performance membranes into high-performance ones, as demonstrated by the above 10-fold selectivity enhancement and much-improved conductivities that more than doubled. This turn is also confirmed by the effective and stable pH-neutral AORFB with decreased membrane resistance and at least an order of magnitude lower capacity loss rate. This battery shows advantages over other reported AORFBs in terms of a low capacity loss rate (0.0017 % per cycle) at high current density. This work provides an economically feasible method for designing AORFB-oriented membranes with microporosity.

Non-cationic hyper-crosslinked ionic polymers with hierarchically ordered porous structures: facile synthesis and applications for highly efficient CO2 capture and conversion

Hyper-crosslinked porous ionic polymers (HCPIPs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique ionic properties and high specific surface areas. However, the limited variety of monomers, low ionic density, and difficulty in functionalization restrict their development. Herein, a series of functionalized non-cationic HCPIPs with high ionic density are designed and directly synthesized via an innovative and straightforward approach - anion (and cation) hyper-crosslinking of tetraphenylborate-based ionic liquids (ILs). These HCPIPs offer controllable hydroxyl group content (0-2.40 mmol g-1), high IL content (1.20-1.78 mmol g-1), and large specific surface area (636-729 m2 g-1) with hierarchically ordered porous structures. These HCPIPs demonstrate exceptional CO2 adsorption capacities and CO2/N2 adsorption selectivities, reaching up to 2.68-3.01 mmol g-1 and 166-237, respectively, at 273 K and 1 bar. Furthermore, these ionic porous materials serve as highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides under mild conditions (1 bar CO2, 60-80 °C, 12-24 h). Notably, the CO2 adsorption performances and catalytic activities of these HCPIPs are regulated by the hydroxyl groups within their structures, with enhancements observed as the number of hydroxyl groups increases. This work presents a facile and widely applicable method for constructing high-performance and task-specific HCPIPs.

Ternary heterojunction of cross-linked benzene Polymer/Bi2MoO6-Graphene oxide catalysts promote efficient adsorption and photocatalytic removal of oxytetracycline

Antibiotics are refractory degradable organic pollutants that present a significant hazard to water environments. In this work, a ternary composite (KB/BMO-GO) comprising of graphene oxide (GO), Bi2MoO6 (BMO), and a cross-linked benzene polymer (KB) was synthesized and applied to promote the synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of the refractory pollutant, oxytetracycline (OTC). The inclusion of GO and KB in the composite enhanced the OTC adsorption performance of the catalysts, and the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction promoted the photogenerated charge separation efficiency and broadened the range of light absorption, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Moreover, we compared the performance of catalysts loaded with different mass ratios of KB (x% KB/BMO-GO). Among them, the 15 % KB/BMO-GO catalyst sample had the best OTC degradation performance. Specifically, 15 % KB/BMO-GO could adsorb 69.7 % of OTC in 30 min, reaching an OTC degradation rate of 93.3 % under visible light irradiation. h+ and 1O2 are the main active substances in the photocatalytic process. In addition, the catalysts are acid-alkali and salt-resistant, as well as good reusability. This study provides a valuable reference for the preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts for synergistic adsorption-photodegradation processes.

Dipolar Microenvironment Engineering Enabled by Electron Beam Irradiation for Boosting Catalytic Performance

Creating a diverse dipolar microenvironment around the active site is of great significance for the targeted induction of intermediate behaviors to achieve complicated chemical transformations. Herein, an efficient and general strategy is reported to construct hypercross-linked polymers (HCPs) equipped with tunable dipolar microenvironments by knitting arene monomers together with dipolar functional groups into porous network skeletons. Benefiting from the electron beam irradiation modification technique, the catalytic sites are anchored in an efficient way in the vicinity of the microenvironment, which effectively facilitates the processing of the reactants delivered to the catalytic sites. By varying the composition of the microenvironment scaffold structure, the contact and interaction behavior with the reaction participants can be tuned, thereby affecting the catalytic activity and selectivity. As a result, the framework catalysts produced in this way exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the synthesis of glycinate esters and indole derivatives. This manipulation is reminiscent of enzymatic catalysis, which adjusts the internal polarity environment and controls the output of products by altering the scaffold structure.

Role of Nitrogenous Functional Group Identity in Accelerating 1,2,3-Trichloropropane Degradation by Pyrogenic Carbonaceous Matter (PCM) and Sulfide Using PCM-like Polymers

Groundwater contamination by 1,2,3-trichloropropane (TCP) poses a unique challenge due to its human toxicity and recalcitrance to degradation. Previous work suggests that nitrogenous functional groups of pyrogenic carbonaceous matter (PCM), such as biochar, are important in accelerating contaminant dechlorination by sulfide. However, the reaction mechanism is unclear due, in part, to PCM's structural complexity. Herein, PCM-like polymers (PLPs) with controlled placement of nitrogenous functional groups [i.e., quaternary ammonium (QA), pyridine, and pyridinium cations (py+)] were employed as model systems to investigate PCM-enhanced TCP degradation by sulfide. Our results suggest that both PLP-QA and PLP-py+ were highly effective in facilitating TCP dechlorination by sulfide with half-lives of 16.91 ± 1.17 and 0.98 ± 0.15 days, respectively, and the reactivity increased with surface nitrogenous group density. A two-step process was proposed for TCP dechlorination, which is initiated by reductive ß-elimination, followed by nucleophilic substitution by surface-bound sulfur nucleophiles. The TCP degradation kinetics were not significantly affected by cocontaminants (i.e., 1,1,1-trichloroethane or trichloroethylene), but were slowed by natural organic matter. Our results show that PLPs containing certain nitrogen functional groups can facilitate the rapid and complete degradation of TCP by sulfide, suggesting that similarly functionalized PCM might form the basis for a novel process for the remediation of TCP-contaminated groundwater.

Synthesizing Hypercrosslinked Polymers with Deep Eutectic Solvents to Enhance CO2/N2 Selectivity

Hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are widely used in ion exchange, water purification, and gas separation. However, HCP synthesis typically requires hazardous halogenated solvents e. g., dichloroethane, dichloromethane and chloroform which are toxic to human health and environment. Herein we hypothesize that the use of halogenated solvents in HCP synthesis can be overcome with deep eutectic solvents (DES) comprising metal halides-FeCl3, ZnCl2 that can act as both the solvent hydrogen bond donor and catalyst for polymer crosslinking via Friedel Crafts alkylation. We validated our hypothesis by synthesizing HCPs in DESs via internal and external crosslinking strategies. [ChCl][ZnCl2]2 and [ChCl][FeCl3]2 was more suitable for internal and external hypercrosslinking, respectively. The specific surface areas of HCPs synthesized in DES were 20-60 % lower than those from halogenated solvents, but their CO2/N2 selectivities were up to 453 % higher (CO2/N2 selectivity of poly-α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene synthesized in [ChCl][ZnCl2]2 via internal crosslinking reached a value of 105). This was attributed to the narrower pore size distributions of HCPs synthesized in DESs.

Superlative Porous Organic Polymers for Photochemical and Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Applications: From Synthesis to Functionality

To mimic the carbon cycle at a kinetically rapid pace, the sustainable conversion of omnipresent CO2 to value-added chemical feedstock and hydrocarbon fuels implies a remarkable prototype for utilizing released CO2. Porous organic polymers (POPs) have been recognized as remarkable catalytic systems for achieving large-scale applicability in energy-driven processes. POPs offer mesoporous characteristics, higher surface area, and superior optoelectronic properties that lead to their relatively advanced activity and selectivity for CO2 conversion. In comparison to the metal organic frameworks, POPs exhibit an enhanced tendency toward membrane formation, which governs their excellent stability with regard to remarkable ultrathinness and tailored pore channels. The structural ascendancy of POPs can be effectively utilized to develop cost-effective catalytic supports for energy conversion processes to leapfrog over conventional noble metal catalysts that have nonlinear techno-economic equilibrium. Herein, we precisely surveyed the functionality of POPs from scratch, classified it, and provided a critical commentary of its current methodological advancements and photo/electrochemical achievements in the CO2 reduction reaction.

Three Birds with One Sulfur: Construction of Sulfur-Bridged Porous Organic Polymers for Efficient Gold Adsorption

Sulfur is a massive byproduct of the petrochemicals industry and hardly employed as a building block for porous organic polymers (POPs). Here, a new family of sulfur-bridged POPs has been prepared via a C-H insertion reaction between sulfur and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Sulfur works as a solvent, external cross-linker, and porogen simultaneously during the polymerization process. The products demonstrate high porosity and maximum surface area of 1050 m2 g-1 with abundant accessible active sites, contributing to the nanometerization of sulfur and significantly enhancing the inherent affinity between heteroatoms toward soft metal ions. Therefore, they exhibit a high absorption capacity for Au(III) of 3287 mg g-1 and excellent absorption selectivity and removal efficiency via a performance evaluation even in real electronic wastewater. This synthetic strategy to prepare high added-value functional POPs with sulfur not only sheds light on designing high-performance gold adsorption materials and emerging POPs, but also promotes a sustainable development protocol.

Dibromomethane Knitted Highly Porous Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymers for Efficient High-Pressure Methane Storage

Hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) with ultra-high porosity, superior physicochemical stability, and excellent cost-effectiveness are attractive candidates for methane storage. However, the construction of HCPs with BET surface areas exceeding 3000 m2 g-1 remains extremely challenging. In this work, a newly developed DBM-knitting method with a slow-knitting rate is employed to increase the cross-linking degree, in which dichloromethane (DCM) is replaced by dibromomethane (DBM) as both solvent and electrophilic cross-linker, resulting in highly porous and physicochemically stable HCPs. The BET surface areas of DBM-knitted SHCPs-Br are 44%-120% higher than that of DCM-knitted SHCPs-Cl using the same building blocks. Remarkably, SHCP-3-Br exhibits an unprecedentedly high porosity (SBET = 3120 m2 g-1) among reported HCPs, and shows a competitive volumetric 5-100 bar working methane capacity of 191 cm3 (STP) cm-3 at 273 K calculated by using real packing density, which outperforms sate-of-art metal-organic framework (MOFs) at comparable conditions. This facile and versatile low-knitting-rate strategy enables effective improvement in the porosity of HCPs for porosity-desired applications.

Mechanically stable polymer molecular sieve membranes with switchable functionality designed for high CO2 separation performance

The development of high-performance membranes selective for carbon dioxide is critically important for advancing energy-efficient carbon dioxide capture technologies. Although molecular sieves have long been attractive membrane materials, turning them into practical membrane applications has been challenging. Here, we introduce an innovative approach for crafting a polymeric molecular sieve membrane to achieve outstanding carbon dioxide separation performance while upholding the mechanical stability. First, a polymer molecular sieve membrane having high gas permeability and mechanical stability was fabricated from a judiciously designed polymer that is solution-processable, hyper-cross-linkable, and functionalizable. Then, the carbon dioxide selectivity was fine-tuned by the subsequent introduction of various amine-based carriers. Among the diverse amines, polyethyleneimine stands out by functionalizing the larger pore region while preserving ultramicropores, leading to improved carbon dioxide/dinitrogen separation performance. The optimized membrane demonstrates exceptional carbon dioxide/dinitrogen separation performance, outperforming other reported polymer molecular sieve membranes and even competing favorably with most carbon molecular sieve membranes reported to date.

In-situ formatting donor-acceptor polymer with giant dipole moment and ultrafast exciton separation

Donor-acceptor semiconducting polymers present countless opportunities for application in photocatalysis. Previous studies have showcased their advantages through direct bottom-up methods. Unfortunately, these approaches often involve harsh reaction conditions, overlooking the impact of uncontrolled polymerization degrees on photocatalysis. Besides, the mechanism behind the separation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in donor-acceptor polymers remains elusive. This study presents a post-synthetic method involving the light-induced transformation of the building blocks of hyper-cross-linked polymers from donor-carbon-donor to donor-carbon-acceptor states, resulting in a polymer with a substantial intramolecular dipole moment. Thus, excitons are efficiently separated in the transformed polymer. The utility of this strategy is exemplified by the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide synthesis. Encouragingly, our observations reveal the formation of intramolecular charge transfer states using time-resolved techniques, confirming transient exciton behavior involving separation and relaxation. This light-induced method not only guides the development of highly efficient donor-acceptor polymer photocatalysts but also applies to various fields, including organic solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and sensors.

Metal-Free Activation of Molecular Oxygen by 9-Fluorenone-Based Porous Organic Polymers for Selective Aerobic Oxidation

Oxygen activation is a critical step in heterogeneous oxidative processes, particularly in catalytic, electrolytic, and pharmaceutical applications. Among the various catalysts available for photocatalytic O2 activation, homogeneous aryl ketones are at the forefront. To avoid the degradation and deactivation of aryl ketones, 9-fluorenone-based porous organic polymers were designed and regulated by doping them with co-monomers. The obtained heterogeneous photocatalyst showed good performance in O2 activation, and its performance was better than that of homogeneous 9-fluorenone. The obtained heterogeneous photocatalyst showed good reusability. We believe that the presented method and findings represent an important step toward designing catalysts tailored for specific tasks.

Revealing the role of hydrogen bond coupling structure for enhanced performance of the solid-state electrolyte

Achieving practical applications of PEO-based composite solid electrolyte (CPE) batteries requires the precise design of filler structures at the molecular level to form stable composite interfacial phases, which in turn improve the conductivity of Li+ and inhibit the nucleation growth of lithium dendrites. Some functional fillers suffer from severe agglomeration due to poor compatibility with the polymer base or grain boundary migration, resulting in limited improvement in cell performance. In this paper, ILs@KAP1 is reported as a filler to enhance the performance of PEO-based batteries. Thereinto, the hypercrosslinked phosphorus ligand polymer-containing KAP1, designed at the molecular level, has an abundant porous structure, hydrogen bonding network, and a rigid skeleton structure of benzene rings. These can be used both to improve the flammability with PEO-based and to reduce the crystallinity of the polymer electrolyte. Ionic liquids (ILs) are encapsulated in the nanochannels of KAP1, and thus a 3D Li+ conducting framework could be formed. In this case, it could not only facilitate the wettability of the contact interface with the electrode, significantly promoting its compatibility and providing a fast Li+ transport path, but also facilitate the formation of LiF, Li3N and Li2O rich SEI components, further fostering the uniform deposition/exfoliation of lithium. The LFP||CPE||Li battery assembled with ILs@KAP1-PEO-CPE has a high initial discharge specific capacity about 156 mAh/g at 1C and a remaining capacity about 121.8 mAh/g after 300 cycles (capacity retention of 78.07%).

Directly Knitted Hierarchical Porous Organometallic Polymer-Based Self-Supported Single-Site Catalyst for CO2 Hydrogenation in Water

In recent times, heterogenization of homogeneous molecular catalysts onto various porous solid support structures has attracted significant research focus as a method for combining the advantages of both homogeneous as well as heterogeneous catalysis. The design of highly efficient, structurally robust and reusable heterogenized single-site catalysts for the CO2 hydrogenation reaction is a critical challenge that needs to be accomplished to implement a sustainable and practical CO2 -looped renewable energy cycle. This study demonstrated a heterogenized catalyst [Ir-HCP-(B/TPM)] containing a molecular Ir-abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (Ir-aNHC) catalyst self-supported by hierarchical porous hyper-crosslinked polymer (HCP), in catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to inorganic formate (HCO2 - ) salt that is a prospective candidate for direct formate fuel cells (DFFC). By employing this unique and first approach of utilizing a directly knitted HCP-based organometallic single-site catalyst for CO2 -to-HCO2 - in aqueous medium, extremely high activity with a single-run turnover number (TON) up to 50816 was achieved which is the highest so far considering all the heterogeneous catalysts for this reaction in water. Additionally, the catalyst featured excellent reusability furnishing a cumulative TON of 285400 in 10 cycles with just 1.6 % loss in activity per cycle. Overall, the new catalyst displayed attributes that are important for developing tangible catalysts for practical applications.

Hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone over hydrophobic Ru@HCP catalysts

This study introduces an efficient strategy for promoting the synthesis of γ-valerolactone (GVL) via levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation. A series of hyper-crosslinked porous polymer (HCP) supported Ru catalysts with different monomers were prepared. The wettabilities were controlled by the surface functional groups. The hydrophobic catalysts showed much higher activity than the hydrophilic ones in the hydrogenation of LA to GVL, highly possible due to the substrate enrichment. Further insight showed that the reaction proceeded through the 4-HVA route. These results illustrated the importance of surface wettability in bio-based molecule upgrading, which is beneficial for catalyst design.

Palladium Catalysts Supported in Microporous Phosphine Polymer Networks

A new set of microporous organic polymers (POPs) containing diphosphine derivatives synthesized by knitting via Friedel-Crafts has been attained. These amorphous three-dimensional materials have been prepared by utilizing diphosphines, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, and biphenyl as nucleophile aromatic groups, dimethoxymethane as the electrophilic linker, and FeCl3 as a promoting catalyst. These polymer networks display moderate thermal stability and high microporosity, boasting BET surface areas above 760 m2/g. They are capable of coordinating with palladium acetate, using the phosphine derivative as an anchoring center, and have proven to be highly efficient catalysts in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions involving bromo- and chloroarenes under environmentally friendly (using water and ethanol as solvents) and aerobic conditions. These supported catalysts have achieved excellent turnover numbers (TON) and turnover frequencies (TOF), while maintaining good recyclability without significant loss of activity or Pd leaching after five consecutive reaction cycles.

Organic porous heterogeneous composite with antagonistic catalytic sites as a cascade catalyst for continuous flow reaction

One-pot cascade catalytic reactions easily allow the circumvention of pitfalls of traditional catalytic reactions, such as multi-step syntheses, longer duration, waste generation, and high operational cost. Despite advances in this area, the facile assimilation of chemically antagonistic bifunctional sites in close proximity inside a well-defined scaffold via a process of rational structural design still remains a challenge. Herein, we report the successful fusion of incompatible acid-base active sites in an ionic porous organic polymer (iPOP), 120-MI@OH, via a simple ion-exchange strategy. The fabricated polymer catalyst, 120-MI@OH, performed exceedingly well as a cascade acid-base catalyst in a deacetylation-Knoevenagel condensation reaction under mild and eco-friendly continuous flow conditions. In addition, the abundance of spatially isolated distinct acidic (imidazolium cations) and basic (hydroxide anions) catalytic sites give 120-MI@OH its excellent solid acid and base catalytic properties. To demonstrate the practical relevance of 120-MI@OH, stable millimeter-sized spherical composite polymer bead microstructures were synthesized and utilized in one-pot cascade catalysis under continuous flow, thus illustrating promising catalytic activity. Additionally, the heterogeneous polymer catalyst displayed good recyclability, scalability, as well as ease of fabrication. The superior catalytic activity of 120-MI@OH can be rationalized by its unique structure that reconciles close proximity of antagonistic catalytic sites that are sufficiently isolated in space.

Porous organic polymers (POPs) for environmental remediation

Modern global industrialization along with the ever-increasing growth of the population has resulted in continuous enhancement in the discharge and accumulation of various toxic and hazardous chemicals in the environment. These harmful pollutants, including toxic gases, inorganic heavy metal ions, anthropogenic waste, persistent organic pollutants, toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds, etc., are destroying the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, systematic monitoring and effective remediation of these toxic pollutants either by adsorptive removal or by catalytic degradation are of great significance. From this viewpoint, porous organic polymers (POPs), being two- or three-dimensional polymeric materials, constructed from small organic molecules connected with rigid covalent bonds have come forth as a promising platform toward various leading applications, especially for efficient environmental remediation. Their unique chemical and structural features including high stability, tunable pore functionalization, and large surface area have boosted the transformation of POPs into various macro-physical forms such as thick and thin-film membranes, which led to a new direction in advanced level pollutant removal, separation and catalytic degradation. In this review, our focus is to highlight the recent progress and achievements in the strategic design, synthesis, architectural-engineering and applications of POPs and their composite materials toward environmental remediation. Several strategies to improve the adsorption efficiency and catalytic degradation performance along with the in-depth interaction mechanism of POP-based materials have been systematically summarized. In addition, evolution of POPs from regular powder form application to rapid and more efficient size and chemo-selective, "real-time" applicable membrane-based application has been further highlighted. Finally, we put forward our perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these materials toward real-world implementation and future prospects in next generation remediation technology.

A Robust and Low-Cost Sulfonated Hypercrosslinked Polymer for Atmospheric Water Harvesting

The availability of freshwater is rapidly declining due to over-exploitation and climate change, with multiple parts of the globe already facing significant freshwater scarcity. Here, a sulfonated hypercrosslinked polymer able to repeatedly harvest significant amounts of water via direct air capture is reported. Water uptake from relative humidities as low as 10% is demonstrated, mimicking some of the harshest environments on Earth. A water harvesting device is used to show repeated uptake and harvesting without significant detriment to adsorbent performance. Desorption is triggered using simulated sunlight, presenting a low-energy route to water harvesting and adsorbent regeneration. The synthesis of sulfonated hypercrosslinked polymer requires only low-cost and readily available reagents, offering excellent potential for scale-up. Due to an almost limitless supply of water vapor from air in most regions around the globe, this approach can transform our ability to address water security concerns.

Machine-learning-assisted material discovery of oxygen-rich highly porous carbon active materials for aqueous supercapacitors

Porous carbons are the active materials of choice for supercapacitor applications because of their power capability, long-term cycle stability, and wide operating temperatures. However, the development of carbon active materials with improved physicochemical and electrochemical properties is generally carried out via time-consuming and cost-ineffective experimental processes. In this regard, machine-learning technology provides a data-driven approach to examine previously reported research works to find the critical features for developing ideal carbon materials for supercapacitors. Here, we report the design of a machine-learning-derived activation strategy that uses sodium amide and cross-linked polymer precursors to synthesize highly porous carbons (i.e., with specific surface areas > 4000 m²/g). Tuning the pore size and oxygen content of the carbonaceous materials, we report a highly porous carbon-base electrode with 0.7 mg/cm² of electrode mass loading that exhibits a high specific capacitance of 610 F/g in 1 M H₂SO₄. This result approaches the specific capacitance of a porous carbon electrode predicted by the machine learning approach. We also investigate the charge storage mechanism and electrolyte transport properties via step potential electrochemical spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements.

Fe-N-Doped Conjugated Organic Polymer Efficiently Enhanced the Removal Rate of Cr(VI) from Water

A Fe-N conjugated organic polymer (SMP-Fr-Py) was prepared from ferrocene and pyrrole using a Scholl coupling reaction, which significantly improved the performance of Cr(VI) removal compared to the polymer (HCP-Fr-Py) prepared by adding the cross-linker formaldehyde dimethyl acetal (FDA). The results showed that at a pH of 2 and at 25 °C, the removal of Cr(VI) reached 90% for SMP-Fr-Py and only 58% for HCP-Fr-Py after 20 min of reaction. Subsequently, 99% and 78% were achieved after 120 min of reaction, respectively. The test results showed that the removal reaction followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The removal efficiency decreased with increasing solution pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration, but increased with increasing SMP-Fr-Py dosage, reaching three cycles. The characterization of the reaction complexes and measurements of Cr species conversion revealed the near absence of Cr(VI) species in the solution. Approximately 38% of Cr(VI) was found to be adsorbed on the material surface, with another fraction present in solution (24%) and on the material surface (38%) in the form of Cr(III). The overall study showed that the direct connection of ferrocene and pyrrole in SMP-Fr-Py through C-C bonding increased the conjugated structure of the polymer backbone, which facilitated electron transfer and transport. Furthermore, the Fe-N elements worked synergistically with each other more easily, which improved the removal performance of Cr(VI) and provided a reference for the subsequent work.

Hyper-Cross-Linked Porous Polymer Featuring B-N Covalent Bonds (HCP-BNs): A Stable and Efficient Metal-Free Heterogeneous Photocatalyst

The first example of a porous polymer containing B-N covalent bonds, prepared from a tetraphene B-N monomer and biphenyl as a comonomer, is reported. It was prepared using the solvent knitting strategy, which allows the connection between the aromatic rings of the two monomers through methylene groups provided by an external cross-linking agent. The new polymer exhibited micromeso porosity with an S_BET of 612 m²/g, high thermal stability, and potential properties as a heterogeneous photocatalyst, since it is very active in the aza-Henry coupling reaction (>98% of conversion and selectivity). After the first run, the catalyst improves its photocatalytic activity, shortening the reaction time to only 2 h and maintaining this activity in successive runs. The presence of a radical in this structure that remains stable with successive runs makes it a new type of material with potential applications as a highly stable and efficient photocatalyst.

Naphthalene-Based Polymers as Catalytic Supports for Suzuki Cross-Coupling

In this work, for the first time, naphthalene (NA)-based polymers were synthesized by one-stage Friedel-Crafts crosslinking. The influence of NA functionalization by -OH, -SO₃H, and -NO₂ groups on the polymers' porosity and distribution of the catalytically active phase (Pd) was studied. Synthesized catalytic systems containing 1 wt.% of Pd either in the form of Pd(II) species or Pd(0) nanoparticles supported on NA-based polymers were tested in a model reaction of Suzuki cross-coupling between 4-bromoanisole and phenylboronic acid under mild reaction conditions (60 °C, ethanol-water mixture as a solvent). These novel catalysts demonstrated high efficiency with more than 95% of 4-bromoanisole conversion and high selectivity (>97%) for the target 4-methoxybiphenyl.

Facile Synthesis Hyper-Crosslinked PdFe Bimetallic Polymer as Highly Active Catalyst for Ullmann Coupling Reaction of Chlorobenzene

The synthesis of efficient and sustainable heterogeneous Pd-based catalysts has been an active field of research due to their crucial role in carbon-carbon coupling reactions. In this study, we developed a facile and eco-friendly in situ assembly technique to produce a PdFe bimetallic hyper-crosslinked polymer (HCP@Pd/Fe) to use as a highly active and durable catalyst in the Ullmann reaction. The HCP@Pd/Fe catalyst exhibits a hierarchical pore structure, high specific surface area, and uniform distribution of active sites, which promote catalytic activity and stability. Under mild conditions, the HCP@Pd/Fe catalyst is capable of efficiently catalyzing the Ullmann reaction of aryl chlorides in aqueous media. The exceptional catalytic performance of HCP@Pd/Fe is attributed to its robust absorption capability, high dispersion, and strong interaction between Fe and Pd, as confirmed by various material characterizations and control experiments. Furthermore, the coated structure of a hyper-crosslinked polymer enables easy recycling and reuse of the catalyst for at least 10 cycles without any significant loss of activity.

Synthesis of porous dimethoxypillar[5]arene knitted β-cyclodextrin copolymers for efficient adsorption of organic micropollutants

Herein, through knitting benzylated β-cyclodextrin (BnCD) by dimethoxypillar[5]arene (P[5]), porous copolymers (P[5]-BnCDs) containing two kinds of macrocycles were synthesized with yields not <97 %. The molar ratio of P[5]/BnCD greatly influenced the P[5]-BnCDs' porosity and adsorption performance. When the molar ratio of P[5]/BnCD was 4/1, the P[5]-BnCD (4-1), demonstrated a surface area up to 515.95 m²/g and showed fast adsorption kinetic, high adsorption capacity and good reusability towards the model organic micropollutants (OMPs). The adsorption fitted well with the pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir models, while the thermodynamic studies revealed spontaneous physisorption process. The adsorption mechanism was dominant by host-guest and hydrophobic interactions and the adsorption at environmentally relevant concentrations experiments showed the practicality and superiority in extraction of the OMPs at μg/L level. This study paves a way for the development of versatile porous organic polymers with multiple macrocycles for efficient removal of OMPs from water.

Design and Synthesis of Porous Organic Polymers: Promising Catalysts for Lignocellulose Conversion to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Derivates

In the face of the current energy and environmental problems, the full use of biomass resources instead of fossil energy to produce a series of high-value chemicals has great application prospects. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which can be synthesized from lignocellulose as a raw material, is an important biological platform molecule. Its preparation and the catalytic oxidation of subsequent products have important research significance and practical value. In the actual production process, porous organic polymer (POP) catalysts are highly suitable for biomass catalytic conversion due to their high efficiency, low cost, good designability, and environmentally friendly features. Here, we briefly describe the application of various types of POPs (including COFs, PAFs, HCPs, and CMPs) in the preparation and catalytic conversion of HMF from lignocellulosic biomass and analyze the influence of the structural properties of catalysts on the catalytic performance. Finally, we summarize some challenges that POPs catalysts face in biomass catalytic conversion and prospect the important research directions in the future. This review provides valuable references for the efficient conversion of biomass resources into high-value chemicals in practical applications.

Amine functionalized benzene based hypercrosslinked polymer as an adsorbent for CO2/N2 adsorption

In this work, benzene based hypercrosslinked polymer (HCP) as an adsorbent was modified using amine group to enhance CO₂ uptake capability and selectivity. Based on BET analysis result, the HCP and the modified HCP provide surface area of 806 (m² g^-1) and micropore volume of 453 (m² g^-1) and 0.19 (cm³ g^-1) and 0.14 (cm³ g^-1), respectively. The CO₂ and N₂ gases adsorption were performed in a laboratory scale reactor at a temperature between 298 and 328 K and pressure up to 9 bar. The experimental data were evaluated using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models to identify the absorbent behavior. The maximum CO₂ adsorption capacity at 298 K and 9 bar was obtained 301.67 (mg g^-1) for HCP and 414.41 (mg g^-1) for amine modified HCP. The CO₂ adsorption thermodynamic parameters assessment including enthalpy changes, entropy changes, and Gibbs free energy changes at 298 K were resulted - 14.852 (kJ mol^-1), - 0.024 (kJ mol^-1 K^-1), - 7.597 (kJ mol^-1) for HCP and - 17.498 (kJ mol^-1), - 0.029(kJ mol^-1 K^-1), - 8.9 (kJ mol^-1) for amine functionalized HCP, respectively. Finally, the selectivity of the samples were calculated at a CO₂/N₂ composition of 15:85 (v/v) and 43% enhancement in adsorption selectivity at 298 K was obtained for amine modified HCP.

Conjugated hypercrosslinked polymers imprinted with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid for the fluorescent determination of α-amylase activity

The discovery of a series of coupling reactions between various building blocks has driven the development of porous organic polymers, but the common usage of expensive and air-sensitive organometallic catalysts and complex procedures in harsh syntheses has limited their expansion. A microporous hypercrosslinked polymer (HCP) was synthesized by polymerizing a naphthalene monomer and a 1,4-dimethoxybenzene crosslinker using Friedel-Crafts alkylation over an FeCl₃ catalyst and imprinted with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS). The DNS-molecularly-imprinted HCPs (MIHCPs) were characterized as having IUPAC Type I mesoporosity, a specific surface area of 1134 m² g^-1, a monolayer adsorption capacity of 116 cm² g^-1, pore sizes ranging from 5 to 8.5 Å, amorphous frameworks, and distinctive absorption and emission bands by N₂ adsorption/desorption analyses, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, and FTIR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectrometries. The π-conjugated imprinted framework endowed the MIHCPs with 405-nm fluorescent emission at a 330-nm excitation and dynamic quenching, which was confirmed by changes in fluorescence lifetime and followed a linear Stern-Volmer plot against 1.0-200 μM DNS template molecules under optimized conditions of a pH 7.0 buffer, an MIHCP concentration of 125 μg mL^-1, and a 3.0-min equilibration time. The MIHCPs exhibited a high imprinted factor of 8.7 against nonimprinted HCP and a selectivity of 8.63 against reduced DNS, which enabled fluorometric detection of DNS molecules produced by the hydrolysis of starch with microbial, salivary, and pancreatic α-amylases and the subsequent redox incubation with the DNS oxidant. The fluorometric measurement of α-amylase activity was higher in accuracy and precision (RSD: 2.6-2.8% vs. 3.9-4.0%) than conventional UV-Vis spectrometry because the excellent fluorescent sensitivity and imprinting selectivity of the MIHCP probes enabled the use of higher dilution factors with weaker matrix effects.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymers Toward Amines Oxidation Coupled with H2 O2 Generation through Extending Monomer's Conjugation Degree

Visible-light-driven amines oxidation coupled with hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) generation is a promising way to convert solar energy to chemical energy. Herein, a series of hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) photocatalysts with different arenes monomers, including benzene (BE), diphenyl (DP), p-terphenyl (TP), or p-quaterphenyl (QP), were synthesized by simple Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. Owing to the maximum monomer's conjunction degree and excellent oxygen (O₂ ) adsorption capacity, QP-HCPs exhibited highest photocatalytic activity for benzylamine oxidation coupled with H₂ O₂ generation under the irradiation of 455 nm Blue LED lamp. More than 99 % of benzylamine could be converted to N-benzylidenebenzylamine within 60 min. In addition, nearly stoichiometric H₂ O₂ was synchronously obtained with a high production rate of 9.3 mmol g_cat ^-1 h^-1 . Our work not only demonstrated that the photocatalytic activity of HCPs photocatalysts significantly depends on monomer's conjunction degree, but also provided a new strategy for converting solar energy to chemical energy.

Graphdiyne aerogel architecture via a modified Hiyama coupling reaction for gas adsorption

Carbon aerogels are special porous materials with low density and large specific surface area and have advanced applications. As a new type of carbon nanomaterials, graphdiynes (GDY) aerogel possess a highly π-conjugated structure, unique sp/sp²-hybridized linkages, and well-distributed intrinsic pores, which endow GDY aerogel with great potential applications. However, the fabrication of macroscopic GDY aerogel is still an ongoing challenge due to intrinsic synthetic difficulties. Here, a modified Hiyama coupling reaction was developed to synthesize GDY aerogel via in-situ deprotection of trimethylsilane groups and subsequent freeze-drying. The synthesized GDY aerogel has a low density of ∼12 mg cm^-3, a high specific surface area of ∼909 m² g^-1, and a porosity of ∼98%, which is superior to other GDY nanomaterials. The adsorption capacity of GDY aerogel toward H₂, CO₂, and CH₄ is investigated, and competitive adsorption abilities are obtained.

Hyper crosslinked polymer supported NHC stabilized gold nanoparticles with excellent catalytic performance in flow processes

Highly active and selective heterogeneous catalysis driven by metallic nanoparticles relies on a high degree of stabilization of such nanomaterials facilitated by strong surface ligands or deposition on solid supports. In order to tackle these challenges, N-heterocyclic carbene stabilized gold nanoparticles (NHC@AuNPs) emerged as promising heterogeneous catalysts. Despite the high degree of stabilization obtained by NHCs as surface ligands, NHC@AuNPs still need to be loaded on support structures to obtain easily recyclable and reliable heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore, the combination of properties obtained by NHCs and support structures as NHC bearing "functional supports" for the stabilization of AuNPs is desirable. Here, we report the synthesis of hyper-crosslinked polymers containing benzimidazolium as NHC precursors to stabilize AuNPs. Following the successful synthesis of hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCP), a two-step procedure was developed to obtain HCP·NHC@AuNPs. Detailed characterization not only revealed the successful NHC formation but also proved that the NHC functions as a stabilizer to the AuNPs in the porous polymer network. Finally, HCP·NHC@AuNPs were evaluated in the catalytic decomposition of 4-nitrophenol. In batch reactions, a conversion of greater than 99% could be achieved in as little as 90 s. To further evaluate the catalytic capability of HCP·NHC@AuNP, the catalytic decomposition of 4-nitrophenol was also performed in a flow setup. Here the catalyst not only showed excellent catalytic conversion but also exceptional recyclability while maintaining the catalytic performance.

Hydroxide ion-conducting viologen-bakelite organic frameworks for flexible solid-state zinc-air battery applications

Adaptable polymer-based solid-state electrolytes can be a game-changer toward safe, lightweight flexible batteries. We present a robust Bakelite-type organic polymer covalently decked with viologen, triazine, and phenolic moieties. Its flexible structure with cationic viologen centers incorporates counter-balancing free hydroxide ions into the polymeric framework. By design, the aromatic groups and heteroatoms in the framework can be activated under an applied potential to prompt a push-pull drive, setting off the towing of hydroxide ions via weak electrostatic, van der Waals, and hydrogen-bond interactions. The frontier orbitals from a DFT-modeled structure certify this. The hydroxyl-polymer requires minimal KOH wetting to maintain a humid environment for Grotthuss-type transport. The hydroxide ion conductivity reaches a value of 1.4 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 80 °C and 95% RH, which is retained for over 15 h. We enhanced its practical utility by coating it as a thin solid-state separator-cum-electrolyte on readily available filter paper. The composite exhibits a conductivity of 4.5 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 80 °C and 95% RH. A zinc-air battery (ZAB) constructed using this polymer-coated paper as electrolyte yields a maximum power density of 115 mW cm^-2 and high specific capacitance of 435 mA h g^-1. The power density recorded for our ZAB is among the best reported for polymer electrolyte-based batteries. Subsequently, the flexible battery fabricated with IISERP-POF11_OH@FilterPaper exhibits an OCV of 1.44 V, and three batteries in series power a demo traffic signal. To underscore the efficiency of hydroxide ion transport through the complex multifunctional backbone of the polymer, we calculated the diffusion coefficient for OH^- (Exp: 2.9 × 10^-5 cm² s^-1; Comp. 5.2 × 10^-6 cm² s^-1) using electrochemical methods and MD simulations. Climbing-edge NEB calculations reveal a large energy barrier of 2.11 eV for Zn²⁺ to penetrate the polymer and identify hydroxide ions within the polymer, suggesting no undesirable Zn²⁺ crossover. Our findings assert the readily accessible C-C-linked cationic polymer's capacity as a solid-state electrolyte for ZABs and any anion-conducting membrane.

Selective hydrogenation via precise hydrogen bond interactions on catalytic scaffolds

The active site environment in enzymes has been known to affect catalyst performance through weak interactions with a substrate, but precise synthetic control of enzyme inspired heterogeneous catalysts remains challenging. Here, we synthesize hyper-crosslinked porous polymer (HCPs) with solely -OH or -CH₃ groups on the polymer scaffold to tune the environment of active sites. Reaction rate measurements, spectroscopic techniques, along with DFT calculations show that HCP-OH catalysts enhance the hydrogenation rate of H-acceptor substrates containing carbonyl groups whereas hydrophobic HCP- CH₃ ones promote non-H bond substrate activation. The functional groups go beyond enhancing substrate adsorption to partially activate the C = O bond and tune the catalytic sites. They also expose selectivity control in the hydrogenation of multifunctional substrates through preferential substrate functional group adsorption. The proposed synthetic strategy opens a new class of porous polymers for selective catalysis.

Fluorescence determination of tannic acid imprinted in conjugated hypercrosslinked polymers by Friedel-Crafts acylation

A molecularly imprinted hypercrosslinked polymer (HCP) was synthesized from the polymerization of mesitylene monomer, terephthaloyl chloride crosslinker, and tannic acid (TA) template through FeCl₃-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts acylation. The TA-imprinted HCP (TAHCP) was capable of IUPAC Type I mesoporosity, with specific surface area of 1258 m² g^-1, monolayer adsorption capacity of 289 cm² g^-1, pore sizes ranging from 4.4 to 12.6 Å, amorphous morphology, and characteristic absorption and emission bands. The extended π-conjugation framework of TAHCP was endowed with 385-nm fluorescent emission at 310-nm excitation. The fluorescence intensity of TAHCP could be dynamically quenched by TA and was linearly correlated with 20-1000 nM TA concentrations on the Stern-Volmer plot in the optimized conditions of pH 5.5 buffer, 100 μg mL^-1 TAHCP, and 3.5 min equilibrium. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 50 nM TA was 3.4% (n = 5), and the limit of detection was 6.2 nM based on the 3σ of the TA blanks). For 50nM TA, the imprinted factor was calculated to be 7.8, and the selectivity for 250 nM interferents, including ions, organic acids, saccharides, amino acids, and caffeine, which are commonly found in beverages, was 7.5-9.5, except for gallic acid (1.2). The recoveries of TA spiked in tea and juice beverages at three levels (10-150 nM) were 93.6-101.9% (RSD = 3.6-4.3%).

Facile synthesis of hypercrosslinked polymer as high-efficiency adsorbent for the enrichment of nitroimidazoles from water, honey and chicken meat

Design and fabrication of functionalized hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) for enhancing their performance by using green renewable monomers has attracted considerable research interest. In this study, hydroxyl‑functional HCP (labeled as OHHCP) was prepared via the knitting method by applying natural naringenin as a monomer for the first time. Due to the good hydrophilicity and strong H-bonding ability, the OHHCP showed high extraction capacity for nitroimidazoles. Thus, it was successfully applied as a potent adsorbent for solid phase extraction of five nitroimidazoles in water, honey and chicken meat, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector analysis. At the optimized conditions, the limit of detections (S/N = 3) of the proposed method for water, honey and chicken samples were 0.02 - 0.06 ng mL^-1, 0.5 - 1.0 ng g^-1 and 0.8 - 1.0 ng g^-1, respectively. The recoveries were 80.0 - 110%, and the relative standard deviations were below 10.0%. The OHHCP also displayed good application prospects for other organic compounds with H-bonding capability. This study highlights the facile preparation of OH-functionalized HCPs from renewable and natural resources as potent adsorbents for polar compounds.

Hydroxy-Functionalized Hypercrosslinked Polymers (HCPs) as Dual Phase Radioactive Iodine Scavengers: Synergy of Porosity and Functionality

Large-scale nuclear power plant production of iodine radionuclides (129 I, 131 I) pose huge threat in the events of nuclear disaster. Effective removal of radioiodine from nuclear waste is one of the most critical challenge because of the drawbacks of state-of-the-art adsorbents such as high cost, low uptake capacity and non-recyclability. Herein, two hydroxy-functionalized (-OH) hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs), namely HCP-91 and HCP-92, have been synthesized and employed towards capture of iodine. High chemical stability along with synergistic harmony of high porosity and functionality of these materials makes them suitable candidates for capture of iodine from both vapor phase and water medium. Moreover, both the HCPs showed superior iodine removal performance from water in terms of fast kinetics and high removal efficiency (2.9 g g-1 and 2.49 g g-1 for HCP-91 and HCP-92 respectively). The role of functionality (-OH groups) and porosity has been established with the help of HCP-91, HCP-92 and non-functionalized biphenyl HCP for the efficient capture of I3 - ions from water. In addition, both HCPs exhibited excellent selectivity and recyclability towards triiodide ions, rendering the potential of these materials towards real-time applications. Lastly, Density functional theoretical studies revealed key insights and corroborate well with the experimental findings.

Fe-Immobilised Catechol-Based Hypercrosslinked Polymer as Heterogeneous Fenton Catalyst for Degradation of Methylene Blue in Water

Clean water is one of the sustainable development goals. Organic dye is one of the water pollutants affecting water quality. Hence, the conversion of dyes to safer species is crucial for water treatment. The Fenton reaction using Fe as a catalyst is a promising process. However, homogeneous catalysts are normally sensitive, difficult to separate, and burdensome to reuse. Therefore, a catechol-based hypercrosslinked polymer (catechol-HCP) was developed as an inexpensive solid support for Fe (catechol-HCP-Fe) and applied as a heterogenous Fenton catalyst. The good interaction of the catechol moiety with Fe, as well as the porous structure, simple preparation, low cost, and high stability of catechol-HCP, make it beneficial for Fe-loading in the polymer and Fenton reaction utilisation. The catechol-HCP-Fe demonstrated good catalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation in a neutral pH. Complete decolouration of 100 ppm MB could be observed within 25 min. The rate of reaction was influenced by H₂O₂ concentration, polymer dose, MB concentration, pH, and temperature. The catechol-HCP-Fe could be reused for at least four cycles. The dominant reactive species of the reaction was considered to be singlet oxygen (¹O₂), and the plausible mechanism of the reaction was proposed.

Amino-functionalized hypercrosslinked polymer as sorbent for effective extraction of nitroimidazoles from water, drink and honey samples

The three hypercrosslinked polymers (HCP) materials, designated as OPD-HCP, MPD-HCP and PPD-HCP, were synthesized by using o-phenylenediamine (OPD), m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as monomers. They were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy. Then, the HCPs were explored as solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the extraction of five nitroimidazoles (NDZs) (metronidazole, ronidazole, secnidazole, dimetridazole and ornidazole). Among the three HCPs, the MPD-HCP has the best adsorption performance for the NDZs. With the help of high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), good linear response range (0.07-40.0 ng mL^-1), high method recovery (86.8%-113.3%), low limits of detection (0.02-0.15 ng mL^-1) and good precision with the relative standard deviations of less than 8.1% were achieved for the determination of the NDZs in water samples. The effective determination of the NDZs in peach juice, honey tea, and honey samples were also realized by the developed method with satisfactory results. Based on both the experimental results and density functional theory calculation, the adsorption mechanism can be attributed to multiple interactions between the MPD-HCP and the NDZs, including hydrogen bonding, hydrophilic, and electrostatic interactions. The method provides a new alternative of choice for the determination of some NDZs in real samples.
