Abstract
Nitro-aromatic compounds have a deleterious effect on the environment and they are extremely explosive. Therefore, societal concern about exposure to nitro-aromatic compounds encourages researchers to develop selective and sensitive detection platforms for nitro-aromatic compounds in recent years. In this paper, a new 100% water-soluble cyclotriphosphazene-based bridged naphthalene material (4) was prepared as a small molecule fluorescent sensor for ultra-selective detection of nitro-aromatic compounds. The chemical structure of 4 was extensively characterized by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies (31P, 13C, 1H). The photo-physical properties of the newly developed sensing system were investigated by steady-state fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopies. The fluorescence sensor behaviors were extensively evaluated after treatment with the most commonly used metal cations, anions, competitive aromatic compounds, saccharides, and organic acids. The developed fluorescent sensing system (4) demonstrated ultra-selective fluorescence "turn-off" signal change toward nitro-aromatic compounds while other tested competitive species caused negligible changes. To evaluate selectivity, time-resolved, steady-state 3D-fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopies were used in fully aqueous media. Moreover, theoretical calculations (density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory) were applied and discussed to identify fluorescence sensing mechanisms toward nitroaromatic compounds for the presented sensing system.

Abstract
A rare combination of dual static and dynamic fluorescence quenching mechanisms is reported, while sensing the nitroexplosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water by a cationic conjugated copolymer PFPy. Since the fluorophore PFPy interacts with TNT in both ground state as well as the excited states, a greater extent of interaction is facilitated between PFPy and the TNT, as a result of which the magnitude of the signal is amplified remarkably. The existence of these collective sensing mechanisms provides additional advantages to the sensing process and enhances the sensing parameters, such as LoD and highly competitive sensing processes in natural water bodies irrespective of the pH and at ambient conditions. These outcomes involving dual sensing mechanistic pathways expand the scope of developing efficient sensing probes for toxic chemical analyte and biomarker detection, preventing environmental pollution and strengthening security at sensitive locations while assisting in early diagnosis of disease biomarkers.

Abstract
Two small molecular monomers, ph-TPE and ph-TPE-CN, and their homopolymers Poly (ph-TPE) and Poly (ph-TPE-CN) containing tetra phenylethylene and sulfate structures, were synthesized by a sulfur (VI) fluorine exchange click reaction (SuFEx) and radical polymerization. All the monomers and polymers exhibit a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect both in the solid state and aggregated state. Moreover, based on the intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect between the tetra phenylethylene chromophore and p-nitrophenol, both polymers could be used for the selective detection of p-nitrophenol. The detection limit and reactivity coefficient of Poly (ph-TPE) are 0.081 μM and 5.15×104 M-1 , respectively, whereas the detection limit and reactivity coefficient of Poly (ph-TPE-CN) are 0.077 μM and 1.81×104 M-1 , respectively. This can be attributed to the greater sensitivity of Poly (ph-TPE-CN) to p-nitrophenol than that of Poly (ph-TPE). This work provides a new methodology for the preparation and broadening application of side-chain type AIE-active polysulfate fluorescent probes.

Abstract
Although it is widely used in industry and food products, formic acid can be dangerous owing to its corrosive properties. Accurate determination of formic acid would not only benefit its qualified uses but also be an effective way to avoid corrosion or injury from inhalation, swallowing, or touching. Herein, we present a nanofilm-based fluorescent sensor for formic acid vapor detection with a wide response range, fast response speed, and high sensitivity and selectivity. The nanofilm was synthesized at a humid air/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) interface through dynamic covalent condensation between two typically designed building blocks, de-tert-butyl calix[4]arene-tetrahydrazide (CATH) and 4,4',4″,4‴-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetra-benzaldehyde (ETBA). The as-prepared nanofilm is uniform, flexible, fluorescent, and photochemically stable. The thickness and fluorescence intensity of the nanofilm can be facilely adjusted by varying the concentration of the building blocks and the sensing performance of the nanofilm can be optimized accordingly. Based on the nanofilm, a fluorescent sensor with a wide response range (4.4 ppt-4400 ppm) for real-time and online detection of formic acid vapor was built. With the sensor, a trace amount (0.01%) of formic acid in petroleum ether (60-90 °C) can be detected within 3 s. Besides, fluorescence quenching of the nanofilm by formic acid vapor can be visualized. It is believed that the sensor based on the nanofilm would find real-life applications in corrosion and injury prevention from formic acid.

Fluorescent Calix[4]arene-Carbazole-Containing Polymers as Sensors for Nitroaromatic Explosives. CHEMOSENSORS 2020. Abstract
Two highly fluorescent calix[4]arene-containing phenylene-alt-ethynylene-carbazolylene polymers (Calix-PPE-CBZs) were used in the detection of explosives from the nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) family, in solution and in vapour phases. Both fluorophores exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity towards NACs detection. The quenching efficiencies in solution, assessed through static Stern-Volmer constants (KSV), follow the order picric acid (PA) >> 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) > 2,4-dinitrotoluene > (2,4-DNT) > nitrobenzene (NB). These correlate very well with the NACs electron affinities, as evaluated from their lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) energies, indicating a photo-induced electron transfer as the dominant mechanism in fluorescence quenching. Moreover, and most interesting, detection of TNT, 2,4-DNT and NB vapours via thin-films of Calix-PPE-CBZs revealed a remarkably sensitive response to these analytes, comparable to state-of-the-art chemosensors. The study also analyses and compares the current results to previous disclosed data on the detection of NACs by several calix[4]arene-based conjugated polymers and non-polymeric calix[4]arenes-carbazole conjugates, overall highlighting the superior role of calixarene and carbazole structural motifs in NACs’ detection performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on polymer models were used to support some of the experimental findings.

Abstract
A porphyrin cored azide functionalised dendritic polymer was developed as a selective sensor for in vivo monitoring of mercuric ions in living (normal and cancer) cells and in an aqueous medium. The developed sensor could sense mercuric ions even at a nanomolar concentration with a limit of detection value of 0.9 nM. This probe can be used to monitor mercuric ions in living cells due to its low cytotoxicity and high cell permeability. The hydrophilic nature of the polymer makes it a promising candidate for sensing mercuric ions in real water samples. Moreover, the reversibility of this sensing strategy helps in constructing a logic gate, which is particularly useful in smart sensor design.

Abstract
Film-based fluorescent sensors have become an important field of sensor research due to abundant acquirable signals, real-time monitoring, and ease of miniaturization and integration, where chemically sensitive films are the most vital component of the sensor devices. In this feature article, we introduce hardware structures of film-based fluorescent sensors following the examination/investigation of the recent progress of such sensors with perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives as sensing fluorophores in the films. PBI derivatives were specially chosen because of their outstanding chemical, photochemical, and thermal stabilities as well as their unusual high-fluorescence quantum yields. And finally, we provide a prediction for the future developments and challenges of this emerging field.

Abstract
To achieve a highly efficient, dual-state emission platform for picric acid (PA) detection and latent fingerprint (LFP) visualization, flexible alkyl chains have been facilely attached to the commercial organic dye 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride to provide the target perylenetetracarboxylate molecules PTCA-C4, PTCA-C6, and PTCA-C12. Interestingly, all these molecules exhibited impressive fluorescence characteristics with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of around 93.0 % in dilute solution. Also, emissive features were observed in the solid state because close molecular packing is prevented by the alkyl chains, especially for PTCA-C6, which has a high PLQY value of 49.0 %. Benefiting from its impressive fluorescence performance in both solution and as aggregates, PTCA-C6 was used as a dual-state emission platform for PA detection and also LFP visualization. For example, double-responsive fluorescence quenching in solution was observed in PA detection studies, resulting in high quenching constants (KSV ) and also low limit-of-detection values. Furthermore, the fingerprint powder based on PTCA-C6 also presented an impressive performance on various substrates in terms of fluorescence intensity and resolution, clearly providing the specific fine details of latent fingerprints. These results demonstrate that the facilely synthesized PTCA-C6 with efficient dual-state emission exhibits great potential in the real-world applications of PA detection and LFP visualization.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) were hydrophobically modified by using 1-pyrenebutyric acid (PyBA) with degrees of substitution (DS) between 0.0006 and 0.11. Fluorescence quenching studies were conducted on the pyrene-labeled starch nanoparticles (Py-SNPs) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water with nitromethane (NM), 4-mononitrotoluene (MNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) to assess the mode of quenching of the pyrene labels in the two solvents. In DMSO where pyrene, starch, and the quenchers were soluble, a decrease in fluorescence signal was the result of dynamic encounters between the excited pyrene labels and the nitrated quenchers. In water where starch could be dispersed but pyrene and the nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) were sparingly soluble, quenching took place through the binding of NACs to pyrene aggregates. Py(11)-SNPs (Py-SNPs with a DS of 0.11)-coated filter papers (Py-CFPs) were prepared as fluorescence sensors. The fluorescence emitted by Py-CFPs was quenched to 25% of its original value within 10 ± 2, 72 ± 20, and 23 ± 4 s upon exposure to vapors of MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. When known amounts of NACs were deposited onto Py-CFPs, their limit of detection (LOD) when the fluorescence decreased by more than 3 standard deviations (3σ) from its original value equaled 9.2 ± 0.8, 3.3 ± 0.5, and 0.20 ± 0.02 ng/mm2 for MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. These response times and LODs were among the best values reported to date in the scientific literature for fluorescence sensors. The selectivity of the Py-CFPs toward NACs was also investigated by comparing their response to the presence of non-nitrated aromatics, amines, and aromatic ketones. Quenching was only observed with the latter family of chemicals tested, but with much lower efficiency compared to TNT, thus reflecting some level of selectivity toward this specific NAC.

Abstract
Developing effective methods for detecting illegal additives in food or seasoning is of great significance. In this study, a sensing strategy for selective detection of Sudan dyes was designed based on the fluorescence inner-filter effect (IFE) by using poly(phenylenevinylene) (PPV) solid materials in combination with an optimized experimental protocol. Two types of fluorescent solid materials, electrospun fibrous membranes and drop-cast films, were fabricated with PPV as the fluorophore and poly(vinyl alcohol) as the matrix, respectively. Sudan dyes greatly quenched the fluorescence of the membrane and film, whereas other food colorings or possible food ingredients displayed a much smaller or negligible quenching effect. The sensing mechanism was studied, and the selectivity was ascribed to IFE, which requires the overlap between the absorption of the analyte and absorption/emission of the sensing material. The form of materials (membrane or film), the content of PPV, and the cross-linking process did not have much influence on the selectivity and sensitivity, which is consistent with the IFE mechanism and demonstrates the advantage of not requiring strict control of the preparative process. All the cross-linked materials were found to be stable against water/humidity and displayed good reversibility in sensing and can be reused at least for 10 cycles with negligible influence on the sensing performance. A cross-linked membrane was selected for detecting Sudan dyes in chili powder because folding did not affect the mechanical stability of the membrane. Two different protocols were used to pretreat the chili samples, which allowed the detection of Sudan dyes in chili powder as well as the discrimination of Sudan dyes from synthetic food coloring such as allura red. This study provides a facile and cost-effective method for preparing reusable sensing materials for detecting some dyes in commercial foods or food seasonings.

Abstract
A conceptual sensor array for the efficient discrimination and fast detection of saturated alkanes and commonly found volatile solvents is reported.
This work reports a conceptual sensor array for the highly discriminative analysis of 20 clinically and environmentally relevant volatile small organic molecules (VSOMs), including saturated alkanes and common solvents, in the air at room temperature. For the construction of the sensor array, a four coordinated, non-planar mono-boron complex and four relevant polymers are synthesized. Based on the polymers and the use of different substrates, 8 fluorescent films have been fabricated. Integration of the film-based sensors results in the sensor array, which demonstrates unprecedented discriminating capability toward the VSOMs. Moreover, for the signal molecule of lung cancer, n-pentane, the response time is less than 1 s, the experimental detection limit is lower than 3.7 ppm, and after repeating the tests over 50 times no observable degradation was observed. The superior sensing performance is partially ascribed to the tetrahedral structure of the boron centers in the polymers as it may produce molecular channels in the films, which are a necessity for fast and reversible sensing. In addition, the polarity of the micro-channels may endow the films with additional selectivity towards the analytes. The design as demonstrated provides an effective strategy to improve the sensing performance of fluorescent films to very challenging analytes, such as saturated alkanes.

Abstract
Functional polymeric materials have seen their way into every facet of materials chemistry and engineering. In this review article, we focus on a promising class of polymers, poly(aryleneethynylene)s, by covering several of the numerous applications found thus far for these materials. Additionally, we survey the current synthetic strategies used to create these polymers, with a focus on the emerging technique of alkyne metathesis. An overview is presented of the most recent catalytic systems that support alkyne metathesis as well as the more useful alkyne metathesis reaction capable of synthesizing poly(aryleneethynylene)s.

Abstract
A simple naphthalene based fluorescent probe was first time reported as dual sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrotolune (TNT) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) by distinguishable changes in both solution color change and fluorescence within same sample without any mask agent. Upon addition of TNT and TNP, the strong emission quenching at 412nm and a new emission band at 530nm was observed, respectively. In addition, the sensing mechanism was evaluated by DFT calculations by Gaussian 09 software.
