Design, Synthesis and Actual Applications of the Polymers Containing Acidic P-OH Fragments: Part 2-Sidechain Phosphorus-Containing Polyacids

Macromolecules containing acidic fragments in side-groups—polyacids—occupy a special place among synthetic polymers. Properties and applications of polyacids are directly related to the chemical structure of macromolecules: the nature of the acidic groups, polymer backbone, and spacers between the main chain and acidic groups. The chemical nature of the phosphorus results in the diversity of acidic >P(O)OH fragments in sidechain phosphorus-containing polyacids (PCPAs) that can be derivatives of phosphoric or phosphinic acids. Sidechain PCPAs have many similarities with other polyacids. However, due to the relatively high acidity of −P(O)(OH)2 fragment, bone and mineral affinity, and biocompatibility, sidechain PCPAs have immense potential for diverse applications. Synthetic approaches to sidechain PCPAs also have their own specifics. All these issues are discussed in the present review.

Anhydrous Proton Transport within Phosphonic Acid Layers in Monodisperse Telechelic Polyethylenes

Polymers bearing phosphonic acid groups have been proposed as anhydrous proton-conducting membranes at elevated operating temperatures for applications in fuel cells. However, the synthesis of phosphonated polymers and the control over the nanostructure of such polymers is challenging. Here, we report the straightforward synthesis of phosphonic acid-terminated, long-chain aliphatic materials with precisely 26 and 48 carbon atoms (C₂₆PA₂ and C₄₈PA₂). These materials combine the structuring ability of monodisperse polyethylenes with the ability of phosphonic acid groups to form strong hydrogen-bonding networks. Anhydride formation is absent so that charge carrier loss by a condensation reaction is avoided even at elevated temperatures. Below the melting temperature (T_m), both materials exhibit a crystalline polyethylene backbone and a layered morphology with planar phosphonic acid aggregates separated by 29 and 55 Å for C₂₆PA₂ and C₄₈PA₂, respectively. Above T_m, the amorphous polyethylene (PE) segments coexist with the layered aggregates. This phenomenon is especially pronounced for the C₂₆PA₂ and is identified as a thermotropic smectic liquid crystalline phase. Under these conditions, an extraordinarily high correlation length (940 Å) along the layer normal is observed, demonstrating the strength of the hydrogen bond network formed by the phosphonic acid groups. The proton conductivity in both materials in the absence of water reaches 10^-4 S/cm at 150 °C. These new precise phosphonic acid-based materials illustrate the importance of controlling the chemistry to form self-assembled nanoscale aggregates that facilitate rapid proton conductivity.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Block Copolymers with Tethered Acid Groups: Challenges and Opportunities

Scientific research on advanced polymer electrolytes has led to the emergence of all-solid-state energy storage/transfer systems. Early research began with acid-tethered polymers half a century ago, and research interest has gradually shifted to high-precision polymers with controllable acid functional groups and nanoscale morphologies. Consequently, various self-assembled acid-tethered block polymer morphologies have been produced. Their ion properties are profoundly affected by the multiscale intermolecular interactions in confinements. The creation of hierarchically organized ion/dipole arrangements inside the block copolymer nanostructures has been highlighted as a future method for developing advanced single-ion polymers with decoupled ion dynamics and polymer chain relaxation. Several emerging practical applications of the acid-tethered block copolymers have been explored to draw attention to the challenges and opportunities in developing state-of-the-art electrochemical systems.

Tuning layered superstructures in precision polymers

An approach to influence and control layered superstructures by varying the methylene sequence length between two consecutive functional groups in linear precision polymers containing 2,6-diaminopyridine (DAP) groups is presented. Layered superstructures with repeating units involving three monomeric units along the chain direction with very high coherence lengths upto 110 nm are observed in case of shorter alkyl segments, (16 and 18 [Formula: see text] units), while more conventional layer superstructures incorporating only one monomer are found for related polymers with 20 [Formula: see text] units per methylene sequence. A building block model explaining the unusually large periodicity of three monomeric units is proposed wherein layers containing crystalline or amorphous methylene sequences occur in different combinations. Occurrence of different layered structures depending on crystallization conditions, methylene sequence length as well as functional group type is explained by a competition of H-interactions between the DAP groups and the van der Waal forces between the hydrophobic methylene groups.

Monofunctional and Telechelic Polyethylenes Carrying Phosphonic Acid End Groups

Monofunctional or telechelic polyethylenes (PEs) carrying phosphonic acid end groups are obtained from functional PE produced by catalyzed chain growth (CCG) on magnesium. CCG is first used to produce iodo-end-functionalized PE (PE-I) that is efficiently turned into phosphonate end-functionalized PE (PE-P(O)(OEt)₂ ) in the presence of triethylphosphite through the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction. A simple treatment of the resulting PE-P(O)(OEt)₂ with bromotrimethylsilane leads to the targeted phosphonic acid end-functionalized PE (PE-P(O)(OH)₂ ) for the first time. Vinyl-end-functionalized analogs (Vin-PE-P(O)(OEt)₂ ) are produced using vinyl-end-functionalized PE-I (Vin-PE-I) recently obtained through CCG. A cross-metathesis reaction is then employed to couple Vin-PE-P(O)(OEt)₂ and produce after treatment with bromotrimethylsilane the corresponding unprecedented α-ω-(diphosphonic acid) telechelic PE ((OH)₂ (O)P-PE-P(O)(OH)₂ ).

Nanoscale Aggregation in Acid- and Ion-Containing Polymers

In this review we summarize recent efforts in understanding nano-aggregation in acid- and ion-containing polymer systems. The acid and ionic groups have specific interactions that drive aggregation and alter polymer behavior at the nano-, micro-, and bulk length scales. Advancements in synthetic methods, characterization techniques, and computer simulations have enabled researchers to better understand the morphologies and dynamics, particularly at the nanoscale. This overview of recent advancements in nano-aggregated polymer systems highlights the current understanding of the field and presents promising directions for future investigations and new applications.

Joining Two Natural Motifs: Catechol-Containing Poly(phosphoester)s

Numerous catechol-containing polymers, including biodegradable polymers, are currently heavily discussed for modern biomaterials. However, there is no report combining poly(phosphoester)s (PPEs) with catechols. Adhesive PPEs have been prepared via acyclic diene metathesis polymerization. A novel acetal-protected catechol phosphate monomer was homo- and copolymerized with phosphoester comonomers with molecular weights up to 42000 g/mol. Quantitative release of the catechols was achieved by careful hydrolysis of the acetal groups without backbone degradation. Degradation of the PPEs under basic conditions revealed complete and statistical degradation of the phosphotri- to phosphodiesters. In addition, a phosphodiester monomer with an adhesive P-OH group and no protective group chemistry was used to compare the binding to metal oxides with the multicatechol-PPEs. All PPEs can stabilize magnetite particles (NPs) in polar solvents, for example, methanol, due to the binding of the phosphoester groups in the backbone to the particles. ITC measurements reveal that multicatechol PPEs exhibit a higher binding affinity to magnetite NPs compared to PPEs bearing phosphodi- or phosphotriesters as repeating units. In addition, the catechol-containing PPEs were used to generate organo- and hydrogels by oxidative cross-linking, due to cohesive properties of catechol groups. This unique combination of two natural adhesive motives, catechols and phosphates, will allow the design of novel future gels for tissue engineering applications or novel degradable adhesives.

Controlled poly(olefin)s via decarboxylation of poly(acrylic acid)

A simple post-polymerisation modification route to a variety of well-controlled polyolefin homo- and block-copolymers is shown via decarboxylation of poly(acrylic acid) with dialkylzinc reagents.

Precise Sulfite Functionalization of Polyolefins via ADMET Polymerization

Copolymers containing sulfite functionalities precisely placed between run lengths of 8, 14, and 20 methylene units were synthesized via ADMET with weight-average molecular weights up to 40 500 g/mol (PDI = 1.89). No such polymer structures have been observed previously. The primary polymer structures and precise nature were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Thermal degradation temperatures up to 310 °C were observed through TGA, and melting points typical of similar unsaturated ADMET polymers were determined by DSC. X-ray scattering was used to compare the polymers to ADMET polyethylene (PE), and when the polymers have 20 carbons between sulfites, the functional groups self-assemble into layers. Higher carbon content incorporation leads to an increase in crystallinity and thermal stability for these polysulfites.

Ladder- and bridge-like polynorbornenes with phosphate linkers: facile one-pot synthesis and excellent properties

A novel telechelic double-stranded polymer with two terminal alkenyl groups was prepared through ROMP of the corresponding monomer bearing a phosphate linker, and was then used as a macromonomer in ADMET polymerization to yield a bridge-like polymer.

Poly(phosphonate)-mediated Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reactions

Poly(phosphonate)s were used in Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons (HWE) reactions with aldehydes. The progress of the reaction was monitored via in situ-NMR spectroscopy. Minimal purification efforts by precipitation of the polymer are achieved.

Nanocomposites of phosphonic-acid-functionalized polyethylenes with inorganic quantum dots

Insertion of diethyl vinyl phosphonates and free vinyl phosphonic acid, respectively, into [(P^O)Pd(Me)(dmso)] ((P^O) = κ(2)-P,O-Ar2PC6H4SO2O with Ar = 2-MeOC6H4) (1-dmso) occurs in a 2,1- as well as 1,2-fashion, to form a four-and a five-membered chelate [(P^O)Pd{κ(2)-C,O-CH(P(O)(OR)2)CH2CH3}] and [(P^O)Pd{κ(2)-C,O-CH2CH(P(O)(OR)2)CH3}] (R = H, Et). No decomposition or other reactions of 1 by free phosphonic acid moieties occur. Copolymerization in a pressure reactor by 1-dmso yields linear random poly(ethylene-co-diethyl vinyl phosphonate) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl phosphonic acid). In these copolymerizations, reversible coordination of the phosphonate moieties of free monomer as well as chelate formation by incorporated monomer retards chain growth as also evidenced by relative binding studies of diethyl phosphonate towards 1. Post-polymerization emulsification of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl phosphonic acid) together with CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) yields submicron (ca. 50 nm from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)) polymer particles with the QDs embedded in the functionalized polyethylene in a nonaggregated fashion. This embedding benefits the fluorescence behavior in terms of continuous emission and life-time as revealed by wide-field fluorescence measurements. These composite particle dispersions are employed as a ″masterbatch" together with an aqueous high density polyethylene (HDPE) dispersion to generate thin films (by spin-coating) and bulk materials (from the melt), respectively, in which the inorganic nanoparticles remain highly disperse.

Functional α,ω-dienes via thiol-Michael chemistry: synthesis, oxidative protection, acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization and radical thiol–ene modification

The synthesis of the novel α,ω-diene 2-(undec-10-en-1-yl)tridec-12-en-1-yl acrylate is described.
