Abstract
Coil-rod copolymers with a dendritic polyethylene (DPE) core and multiple helical poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) arms (DPE-(PBLG)n) were prepared by palladium-catalyzed copolymerization in tandem with ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Macroinitiator (DPE-(NH2)11) was firstly prepared by the group transformation of DPE-(OH)11 generated from palladium-catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and acrylate comonomer. Coil-helical DPE-(PBLG)11 copolymers were prepared by ROP of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride (BLG-NCA). These DPE-(PBLG)11 copolymers could form thermoreversible gels in toluene solvent, and the dendritic topology of the DPE core increased the critical gelation concentrations. The self-assembled nanostructure of gels was fully characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and the morphology of the fibrous structure was a twisted flat ribbon through a self-assembled nanoribbon mechanism. The self-assembled fibers formed by DPE-(PBLG45)11 are more heterogeneous and ramified than previously observed fibers formed by PBLG homopolymer and block copolymers.

Abstract
The interface quality is crucial for the properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer- matrix composites (CFRPs). In order to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of CFRPs, a superior gradient modulus interfacial microstructure is constructed on the carbon fiber (CF) surface by chemically grafting a self-assembly carboxyl-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HP-COOH). A monofilament debonding test, a short beam shear test, an impact test and a dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were conducted to investigate the properties of the modified composite. Prominent improvements of 79.6% for the interfacial shear strength, 51.5% for the interlaminar shear strength, and 49.2% for the impact strength, as well as superior heat-resistance properties are achieved for composites with the gradient modulus interface over those of the untreated CF composites. The mechanism for performance improvement is mainly attributed to the enhanced CF surface energy, mechanical interlocking, and chemical bonding interactions. In particular, an atomic force microscopy (AFM) test proved that the gradient modulus interfacial microstructure formed by HP-COOH could widen the interface layer thickness and buffer the sharp variations in the modulus from CF to resin, thereby transmitting an external force and reducing the stress concentration. This work provides a facile and efficient strategy for constructing a superior and versatile interface for high- performance composites.

Abstract
This study evaluated the supramolecular properties of a new family of water-soluble hyperbranched polytriazoles that have a unimolecular micelle structure. Two new, structurally related hyperbranched polymers (HBPa and HBPn), with the same size (Dh = 11 nm) and core-shell architecture, were prepared and found to act as nanoscale hosts for a broad spectrum of molecular guests. The globular-shaped hyperbranched polymers were synthesized by a straightforward one-pot polymerization method that permits easy synthetic control of the multiple functional groups within the core. Surrounding the core is a shell of polyethylene glycol chains that promotes solubility in pH 7.4 buffer solution and inhibits self-aggregation of the nanoparticles. The core of HBPa, containing a mixture of anionic carboxylate groups and 1,2,3-triazole rings, could be loaded with cationic hydrophilic (i.e., propidium iodide) or partially hydrophobic (i.e., Hoechst 33342) dyes or drugs, including a binary dye/drug pair (i.e., indocyanine green/mitoxantrone). The core of HBPn, containing a mixture of uncharged 2-pentanone chains and 1,2,3-triazole rings, could be loaded with uncharged and very hydrophobic dyes (i.e., Nile Red) or drugs. Improved aqueous solubility of camptothecin was achieved 10-fold from 8.4 to 75 ng/mL. Additionally, cell toxicity studies showed that HBPn was able to release the camptothecin drug inside A549 cancer cells resulting in increased cell death. Taken together, the results suggest that this new family of water-soluble hyperbranched polytriazoles could be broadly useful as nanocarriers for various applications in therapy, imaging, or a combination of the two (theranostics).

Abstract
Synthetic glycopolymers are increasingly investigated as multivalent ligands for a range of biological and biomedical applications. This study indicates that glycopolymers with a fine-tuned balance between hydrophilic sugar pendant units and relatively hydrophobic polymer backbones can act as single-chain targeted nanocarriers for low molecular weight hydrophobic molecules. Non-covalent complexes formed from poly(triazolyl methacrylate) glycopolymers and low molecular weight hydrophobic guest molecules were characterised through a range of analytical techniques - DLS, SLS, TDA, fluorescence spectroscopy, surface tension analysis - and molecular dynamics (MD) modelling simulations provided further information on the macromolecular characteristics of these single chain complexes. Finally, we show that these nanocarriers can be utilised to deliver a hydrophobic guest molecule, Nile red, to both soluble and surface-immobilised concanavalin A (Con A) and peanut agglutinin (PNA) model lectins with high specificity, showing the potential of non-covalent complexation with specific glycopolymers in targeted guest-molecule delivery.

Abstract
Polymeric unimolecular nanoparticles (NPs) exhibiting a core-shell structure and formed by a single multi-arm molecule containing only covalent bonds have attracted increasing attention for numerous biomedical applications. This unique single-molecular architecture provides the unimolecular NP with superior stability both in vitro and in vivo, a high drug loading capacity, as well as versatile surface chemistry, thereby making it a desirable nanoplatform for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. In this review, we surveyed the architecture of various types of polymeric unimolecular NPs, including water-dispersible unimolecular micelles and water-soluble unimolecular NPs used for the delivery of hydrophobic and hydrophilic agents, respectively, as well as their diverse biomedical applications. Future opportunities and challenges of unimolecular NPs were also briefly discussed.

Abstract
Hyperbranched macromolecules (HMs, also called hyperbranched polymers) are highly branched three-dimensional (3D) structures in which all bonds converge to a focal point or core, and which have a multiplicity of reactive chain-ends. This review summarizes major types of synthetic strategies exploited to produce HMs, including the step-growth polycondensation, the self-condensing vinyl polymerization and ring opening polymerization. Compared to linear analogues, the globular and dendritic architectures of HMs endow new characteristics, such as abundant functional groups, intramolecular cavities, low viscosity, and high solubility. After discussing the general concepts, synthesis, and properties, various applications of HMs are also covered. HMs continue being materials for topical interest, and thus this review offers both concise summary for those new to the topic and for those with more experience in the field of HMs.

Abstract
The topic of stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for loading guest molecules is dynamic. It has been widely studied in applications including drug controlled release, smart sensing, catalysis, and modeling. In this paper, a graft copolymer (hyperbranched polystyrene)-g-poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (HBPS-g-PDMAEMA) was synthesized and characterized by (1)H NMR and GPC. It was observed that the star-like HBPS-g-PDMAEMA formed aggregates in aqueous solution. The influence of polymer concentration, ionic strength and pH value on the aggregates in aqueous solution was investigated by using UV-vis spectroscopy and DLS analysis. The results showed that size of aggregates was affected by a corresponding stimulus. In addition, the loading ability of HBPS-g-PDMAEMA aggregates was investigated by using pyrene or Nile red as the model guest molecules by using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that HBPS-g-PDMAEMA aggregates were capable to encapsulate small hydrophobic molecules. These newly prepared HBPS-g-PDMAEMA nanocarriers might be used in, e.g., medicine or catalysis.

Abstract
Polymeric nanobiocomposites have recently become one of the most essential sought after materials for biomedical applications ranging from implants to the creation of gels. Their unique mechanical and biological properties provide them the ability to pass through the highly guarded defense mechanism without undergoing noticeable degradation and initiation of immune responses, which in turn makes them advantageous over the other alternatives. Aligned with the advances in tissue engineering, it is also possible to design three-dimensional extracellular matrix using these polymeric nanobiocomposites that could closely mimic the human tissues. In fact, unique polymer chemistry coupled with nanoparticles could create unique microenvironment that promotes cell growth and differentiation. In addition, the nanobiocomposites can also be devised to carry drugs efficiently to the target site without exhibiting any cytotoxicity as well as to eradicate surgical infections. In this article, an effort has been made to thoroughly review a number of different types/classes of polymeric nanocomposites currently used in biomedical fields. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Dendritic molecules are an exciting research topic because of their highly branched architecture, multiple functional groups on the periphery, and very pertinent features for various applications. Self-assembling dendritic amphiphiles have produced different nanostructures with unique morphologies and properties. Since their self-assembly in water is greatly relevant for biomedical applications, researchers have been looking for a way to rationally design dendritic amphiphiles for the last few decades. We review here some recent developments from investigations on the self-assembly of dendritic amphiphiles into various nanostructures in water on the molecular level. The main content of the review is divided into sections according to the different nanostructure morphologies resulting from the dendritic amphiphiles' self-assembly. Finally, we conclude with some remarks that highlight the self-assembling features of these dendritic amphiphiles.

Abstract
A novel Uralic (U)-rich linear-hyperbranched mono-methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-hyperbranched polyglycerol-graft-Uralic (mPEG-HPG-g-U) nanoparticle (NP) was prepared as drug carrier for antitumor methotrexate (MTX). Due to the H-bond interaction of U with MTX and hydrophobic interaction, this NP exhibited high drug loading efficiency of up to 40%, which was significantly higher than that of traditional NPs based on U-absent copolymers (<15%). In addition, MTX-loaded mPEG-HPG-g-U NPs also demonstrated an acidity-accelerated drug release behavior.

Abstract
In this paper we describe novel pH-responsive core-multishell (CMS) nanocarrier (pH-CMS), obtained by introducing an aromatic imine linker between the shell and the core. At a pH of 5 and lower the used imine linker was rapidly cleaved as demonstrated by NMR studies. The CMS nanocarriers were loaded with the dye Nile red (NR) and the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), respectively. The transport capacities were determined using UV/Vis spectroscopy, and the sizes of the loaded and unloaded CMS nanocarriers were investigated using dynamic light scattering (DLS). We could show that CMS nanocarriers efficiently transported NR in supramolecular aggregates, while DOX was transported in a unimolecular fashion. After cellular uptake the DOX-loaded pH-responsive nanocarriers showed higher toxicities than the stable CMS nanocarriers. This is due to a more efficient DOX release caused by the cleavage of the pH-labile imine bond at lower pH within the intracellular compartments.

Abstract
We here report on the synthesis of a bifunctional nanocarrier system based on amphiphilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (hPG), which is modified by introducing hydrophobic aromatic groups to the core and retaining hydrophilic groups in the shell. "Selective chemical differentiation" and chemo-enzymatic reaction strategies were used to synthesize this new core-shell type nanocarrier. The system shows an innovative bifunctional carrier capacity with both polymeric and unimolecular micelle-like transport properties. Hydrophobic guest molecules such as pyrene were encapsulated into the hydrophobic core of modified hPG via hydrophobic interactions as well as π-π stacking, analogous to a unimolecular micelle system. A second guest molecule, which has a high affinity to the shell like nile red, was solubilized in the outer shell of the host molecule, thus connecting the nanocarrier molecules to form aggregates. This model is confirmed by UV-Vis, fluorescence, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic light scattering, as well as release studies triggered by pH-changes and enzymes. Encapsulated guest molecules, respectively in the core and in the shell, present different controlled release profiles. The bifunctional nanocarrier system is a promising candidate for simultaneous delivery of different hydrophobic drugs for a combination therapy, e.g., in tumor treatment.

Abstract
A new class of non-ionic dendronized multiamphiphilic polymers is prepared from a biodegradable (AB)n-type diblock polymer synthesized from 2-azido-1,3-propanediol (azido glycerol) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-600 diethylester using Novozym-435 (Candida antarctica lipase) as a biocatalyst, following a well-established biocatalytic route. These polymers are functionalized with dendritic polyglycerols (G1 and G2) and octadecyl chains in different functionalization levels via click chemistry to generate dendronized multiamphiphilic polymers. Surface tension measurements and dynamic light scattering studies reveal that all of the multiamphiphilic polymers spontaneously self-assemble in aqueous solution. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy further proves the formation of multiamphiphiles towards monodisperse spherical micelles of about 7-9 nm in diameter. The evidence from UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy suggests the effective solubilization of hydrophobic guests like pyrene and 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid within the hydrophobic core of the micelles. These results demonstrate the potential of these dendronized multiamphiphilic polymers for the development of prospective drug delivery systems for the solubilization of poorly water soluble drugs.
