Abstract
Block copolymer self-assembly in solution paves the way for the construction of well-defined compartmentalized nanostructures. These are excellent templates for the incorporation and stabilisation of nanoparticles (NPs), giving rise to highly relevant applications in the field of catalysis or sensing. However, the regio-selective incorporation of NPs in specific compartments is still an issue, especially concerning the loading with different NP types. Using crystallisation-driven self-assembly (CDSA), functional worm-like crystalline-core micelles (wCCMs) with a tailor-made, nanometre-sized patchy corona were prepared as versatile templates for the incorporation and stabilisation of metal and metal oxide NPs. Different strategies, like ligand exchange or co-precipitation of polymer stabilised NPs with one surface patch, were developed that allow the incorporation of NPs in specific regions of the patchy wCCM corona. Independent of the NP type and the incorporation method, the NPs showed no tendency for agglomeration and were fixed within the corona patches of the wCCMs. The binary loading of patchy micelles with metal and metal oxide NPs was realised by combining different loading strategies, yielding hybrids with homogeneously dispersed NPs guided by the patchy structure of the template.

Abstract
We present herein an evolved methodology for the growth of nanocrystalline hierarchical nanotubes combining physical vapor deposition of organic nanowires (ONWs) and plasma enhanced chemical vacuum deposition of anatase TiO2 layers. The ONWs act as vacuum removable 1D and 3D templates, with the whole process occurring at temperatures ranging from RT to 250 °C. As a result, a high density of hierarchical nanotubes with tunable diameter, length and tailored wall microstructures are formed on a variety of processable substrates as metal and metal oxide films or nanoparticles including transparent conductive oxides. The reiteration of the process leads to the development of an unprecedented 3D nanoarchitecture formed by stacking the layers of hierarchical TiO2 nanotubes. As a proof of concept, we present the superior performance of the 3D nanoarchitecture as a photoanode within an excitonic solar cell with efficiencies as high as 4.69% for a nominal thickness of the anatase layer below 2.75 μm. Mechanical stability and straightforward implementation in devices are demonstrated at the same time. The process is extendable to other functional oxides fabricated by plasma-assisted methods with readily available applications in energy harvesting and storage, catalysis and nanosensing.

Abstract
The aqueous self-assembly of μ-A(BC) n miktobrush terpolymers has been studied using dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. In this system, the A block is hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide), "O", the B block is hydrophobic poly(methylcaprolactone), "C", and the C block is hydrophobic and oleophobic poly(perfluoropropylene oxide), "F". Two terpolymers were examined: one with an average of about two C blocks and two F blocks and another with an average of about three C blocks and two F blocks. In both cases, the total molar mass is near 40 kg mol-1, and the volume fraction of the single O block is greater than 50% of the whole. Both samples form multicompartment micelle structures with subdivided solvophobic cores of C and F domains. The morphologies observed are generally analogous to those previously observed for the self-assembly of μ-ABC miktoarm star terpolymers, namely, "raspberry" and "hamburger" micelles; however, an intriguing multicompartment polymersome morphology with compartmentalized solvophobic bilayers is also observed. These results are interpreted in terms of the relative strengths of the competing interactions among the three blocks and the solvent and in terms of the constraints imposed by the miktobrush architecture.

Abstract
Compartmentalization is ubiquitous to many biological and artificial systems, be it for the separate storage of incompatible matter or to isolate transport processes. Advancements in the synthesis of sequential block copolymers offer a variety of tools to replicate natural design principles with tailor-made soft matter for the precise spatial separation of functionalities on multiple length scales. Here, we review recent trends in the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers to multicompartment nanostructures (MCNs) under (semi-)dilute conditions, with special emphasis on ABC triblock terpolymers. The intrinsic immiscibility of connected blocks induces short-range repulsion into discrete nano-domains stabilized by a third, soluble block or molecular additive. Polymer blocks can be synthesized from an arsenal of functional monomers directing self-assembly through packing frustration or response to various fields. The mobility in solution further allows the manipulation of self-assembly processes into specific directions by clever choice of environmental conditions. This review focuses on practical concepts that direct self-assembly into predictable nanostructures, while narrowing particle dispersity with respect to size, shape and internal morphology. The growing understanding of underlying self-assembly mechanisms expands the number of experimental concepts providing the means to target and manipulate progressively complex superstructures.

Abstract
Fabrication of core-shell polymer nano-objects with well-defined shape and hairy shell has been a subject of immense interest in polymer chemistry for more than two decades now. Different approaches such as those involving synthesis (grafting approaches) and block copolymer self-assembly (solution as well as bulk) have been used for the preparation of such nano-objects. Of these approaches that involving bulk self-assembled structures of block copolymers have been of special interest because of the simplicity and range of shape and structures possible. The present review focuses on the advances which have been made in this direction using diblock and triblock self-assembled structures. It will be shown that this approach allows to fabricate hairy nano-objects of not only simple shapes such as spheres, rods, and sheets but also those with more complex shape and morphology such as multicompartment micelles, which are not possible to obtain with synthetic or solution self-assembly approaches. Furthermore, interesting structures such as Janus nano-objects could also be fabricated using this approach. The review further highlights the use of such nano-objects for templating applications.

Abstract
Nature regulates complex structures in space and time via feedback loops, kinetically controlled transformations, and under energy dissipation to allow non-equilibrium processes. Although man-made static self-assemblies realize excellent control over hierarchical structures via molecular programming, managing their temporal destiny by self-regulation is a largely unsolved challenge. Herein, we introduce a generic concept to control the time domain by programming the lifetimes of switchable self-assemblies in closed systems. We conceive dormant deactivators that, in combination with fast promoters, enable a unique kinetic balance to establish an autonomously self-regulating, transient pH-state, whose duration can be programmed over orders of magnitude-from minutes to days. Coupling this non-equilibrium state to pH-switchable self-assemblies allows predicting their assembly/disassembly fate in time, similar to a precise self-destruction mechanism. We demonstrate a platform approach by programming self-assembly lifetimes of block copolymers, nanoparticles, and peptides, enabling dynamic materials with a self-regulation functionality.

Abstract
Supramolecular forces influence the morphologies of self-assemblies. Herein, self-assembled structures of an amphiphilic, norbornene-derived thiobarbiturate homopolymers (p-NTB) are discussed. The newly designed hompolymer shows self-assembled rod-like structures in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. Formation of the rods are governed by hydrogen bonding motifs and amphiphilicity found in the molecular architecture. The solvent polarity controls their organization into cube-like and sphere-like structures at the next length scale. Encapsulation studies of hydrophobic magnetic particles as well as drug molecules into these superstructures demonstrate a novel route to fabricate multifunctional cube-like and sphere-like aggregates.

Abstract
Hybrid spherical and wormlike amphiphilic block copolymer micelles are formed through evaporation-induced interfacial instabilities of emulsion droplets, allowing the incorporation of pre-synthesized hydrophobic inorganic nanoparticles within the micelle cores, as well as co-encapsulation of different nanoparticles. This encapsulation behavior is largely insensitive to particle surface chemistry, shape, and size, thus providing a versatile route to fabricate multifunctional micelles.

Abstract
We present a detailed study on the preparation of compartmentalized cylindrical nanoparticles via a templated approach: the polybutadiene part of a linear polybutadiene-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) block terpolymer, B420V280T790, having a bulk microstructure with PB cylinders covered by a P2VP double helix and embedded in a PtBMA matrix was selectively crosslinked. Subsequent sonication-assisted dissolution and chemical modifications such as quaternization (P2VP to P2VPq) and ester hydrolysis (PtBMA to poly(sodium methacrylate), PMANa) resulted in core-crosslinked cylinders soluble in organic and aqueous media. Different amounts of crosslinker and the influence of the sonication treatment on size and shape of the cylindrical aggregates were investigated. The cylinders always exhibit a compartmentalized corona. Under certain conditions, in particular quaternization of P2VP in mixtures of THF and MeOH, the helical arrangement of the P2VPq shell could be preserved even in solution, whereas in most other cases randomly distributed P2VP/P2VPq patches were observed. In aqueous solution at high pH, intramicellar interpolyelectrolyte complex (im-IPEC) formation occurred between the positively charged P2VPq shell and the negatively charged PMANa corona. We further show that different noble metal nanoparticles can be generated either selectively within the im-IPEC compartments (Pd) or randomly distributed among shell and corona of the cylinders (Au and Pt).
