Cyclodextrin functionalized graphene nanosheets with high supramolecular recognition capability: synthesis and host-guest inclusion for enhanced electrochemical performance

β-cyclodextrin modified GO ultrafiltration membranes with enhanced antifouling property for water purification

The study investigated the influence of additives on the fabrication of mixed matrix membranes comprising polyethersulfone (PES), with a specific focus on hydrophilicity, flux, morphology, and antifouling properties. Carboxymethyl modified β-cyclodextrin (CMβ-CD) was used to enhance the dispersion and hydrophilicity of graphene oxide (GO), leading to the formation of a hydrophilic and stable composite nanoparticle (CMCD@GO). The hydrophilicity (WCA <51.5°) and water flux (32.6 L.m-2.h-1) of the modified PES membranes (MCDGO-x) were improved by the incorporation of CMCD@GO nanoparticles, while that of PES membrane was 79.7° and 10.6 L.m-2.h-1. The rate of backscattered light intensity (ΔBS) of MCDGO-x suspensions remains stable, suggesting stable dispersion of CMCD@GO in organic solvents. Compared to the bare PES membrane, the MCDGO-x membrane exhibits a thinner active layer and a finger-like structure. The MCDGO-x membrane exhibited excellent naphthenic acids (NAs) rejection (> 93.2%) due to reduced roughness and higher hydrophilicity, while the GO-modified PES membrane (MGO-5) exhibited lower NAs rejection (87.2%). Furthermore, the MCDGO-5 membrane showed higher flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 79.3% compared to MGO-5 membrane (68.5%) after three cycles, indicating the antifouling performance of MCDGO-x for NAs was significantly improved. The combination of CMβ-CD and GO enhance the flux and antifouling properties of PES ultrafiltration membranes, suggesting significant potential for applications in the purification of oil sands process water and the treatment of oily wastewater.

Simple and sensitive sandwich-like voltammetric immunosensing of procalcitonin

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a reliable biomarker in the early diagnosis of septicemia, pyemia and stroke-associated pneumonia. In this work, through preparing β-cyclodextrin/graphene (CD/GN) nanohybrid as carrier and amplifier simultaneously to band antibodies and probe molecules, a simple and innovative sandwich-like voltammetric immunosensor was proposed for the sensitive and effective determination of PCT. Owing to the host-guest recognition property, the antibodies of PCT can enter into the CD cavities to generate a stable complex; meanwhile, aminopyrene (AP) were introduced as the signal probe and it was adsorbed on the surface of GN via aminopyrine π-πinteraction. Based on the signal change from AP as a response signal which exhibits linearity to the concentration of PCT, a highly sensitive sandwich-type voltammetric immunosensor was developed successfully after optimizing various key parameters. The results demonstrated that the developed sensor had a considerably low detection limit (0.003 pg mL-1) and wide linearity of 0.01 pg mL-1 to 20.0 ng mL-1. This work offered a very simple and sensitive sensing strategy for PCT and other biomarkers via altering the specific antibodies simply, showing great potential applications.

Supramolecular host-guest interaction triggered dye extraction from metal-organic framework for dual-mode ATP sensing from serum

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) universally exists in all living organisms and holds a paramount role as a fundamental energy molecule in daily life. The abnormal concentration of ATP is closely related to many diseases, making the highly efficient detection of ATP very urgent. In this study, a dual-mode sensing system was developed to detect ATP sensitively and selectively via both DPV and fluorescence (FL) techniques, based on the strong interaction of ATP and Zn (II) nodes of zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90). The disassembly of ZIF-90 further induced the subsequent release of pre-loaded rhodamine B (RhB). Benefitting from the robust host-guest recognition of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) towards RhB, an enzyme-free and highly specific DPV detection strategy was established with the linear detecting range of 10.0-1.0 × 108 pM and the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.13 pM. Meanwhile, the FL sensing mode based on RhB exhibits comparable sensing performance with the linearity range of 10.0-1.0 × 107 pM and the LOD of 0.29 pM. Furthermore, the enzyme-free ATP sensing system exhibit outstanding long-term storage stability. The two-mode sensing platform was successfully applied to detect the ATP in human serum samples with the yielded result highly agree with the results of commercial ELISA kits. This dual-mode sensing platform is inspiring and paves the road for developing high-performance biosensor, demonstrating enormous potential for vitro diagnosis and practice clinic.

Cyclodextrin Host-Guest Recognition in Glucose-Monitoring Sensors

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic health condition that has caused millions of deaths worldwide. Monitoring blood glucose levels is crucial in diabetes management, aiding in clinical decision making and reducing the incidence of hypoglycemic episodes, thereby decreasing morbidity and mortality rates. Despite advancements in glucose monitoring (GM), the development of noninvasive, rapid, accurate, sensitive, selective, and stable systems for continuous monitoring remains a challenge. Addressing these challenges is critical to improving the clinical utility of GM technologies in diabetes management. In this concept, cyclodextrins (CDs) can be instrumental in the development of GM systems due to their high supramolecular recognition capabilities based on the host-guest interaction. The introduction of CDs into GM systems not only impacts the sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limit of the monitoring process but also improves biocompatibility and stability. These findings motivated the current review to provide a comprehensive summary of CD-based blood glucose sensors and their chemistry of glucose detection, efficiency, and accuracy. We categorize CD-based sensors into four groups based on their modification strategies, including CD-modified boronic acid, CD-modified mediators, CD-modified nanoparticles, and CD-modified functionalized polymers. These findings shed light on the potential of CD-based sensors as a promising tool for continuous GM in diabetes mellitus management.

Application of Cyclodextrin for Cancer Immunotherapy

Tumor immunotherapy, compared with other treatment strategies, has the notable advantage of a long-term therapeutic effect for preventing metastasis and the recurrence of tumors, thus holding great potential for the future of advanced tumor therapy. However, due to the poor water solubility of immune modulators and immune escape properties of tumor cells, the treatment efficiency of immunotherapy is usually significantly reduced. Cyclodextrin (CD) has been repeatedly highlighted to be probably one of the most investigated building units for cancer therapy due to its elegant integration of an internal hydrophobic hollow cavity and an external hydrophilic outer surface. The application of CD for immunotherapy provides new opportunities for overcoming the aforementioned obstacles. However, there are few published reviews, to our knowledge, summarizing the use of CD for cancer immunotherapy. For this purpose, this paper provides a comprehensive summary on the application of CD for immunotherapy with an emphasis on the role, function, and reported strategies of CD in mediating immunotherapy. This review summarizes the research progress made in using CD for tumor immunotherapy, which will facilitate the generation of various CD-based immunotherapeutic delivery systems with superior anticancer efficacy.

Sequential targeting dual-responsive magnetic nanoparticle for improved therapy of lung metastatic breast cancer

Lung metastatic breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death in women and difficult to treat due to non-specific drug delivery. Herein a sequential targeting dual-responsive magnetic nanoparticle was fabricated, where Fe3O4 nanoparticle was used as magnetic core, then sequentially coated with tetraethyl orthosilicate, bis[3-(triethoxy-silyl)propyl] tetrasulfide, and 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate to afford -C = C- on the surface for further polymerisation with acrylic acid, acryloyl-6-ethylenediamine-6-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin using N, N-bisacryloylcy- stamine as cross-linker, obtaining pH/redox dual-responsive magnetic nanoparticle (MNPs-CD) to delivery doxorubicin (DOX) for suppressing lung metastatic breast cancer. Our results suggested DOX-loaded nanoparticle could target the lung metastases site by sequential targeting, in which they first be delivered to the lung and even the metastatic nodules through size-driven, electrical interaction, and magnetic field-guided mechanisms, then be effectively internalised into the cancer cells followed by intelligently triggering DOX release. MTT analysis demonstrated DOX-loaded nanoparticle exhibited high anti-tumour activity against 4T1 and A549 cells. 4T1 tumour-bearing mice were employed to confirm the higher specific accumulation in lung and improved anti-metastatic therapy efficiency of DOX by focussing an extracorporeal magnetic field on the biological target. Our findings suggested the as-proposed dual-responsive magnetic nanoparticle offered a prerequisite to inhibit lung metastasis of breast cancer tumours.

Universal Single-Step Approach to the Immobilization of Cyclodextrins in a Supercritical Medium for Capturing Drug, Dye, and Metal Nanoclusters

By utilizing nanoreactor-like structures, the immobilization of macromolecules such as calixarenes and cyclodextrins (CD) with bucket-like structures provides new possibilities for engineered surface-molecule systems. The practical use of any molecular system depends on the availability of a universal procedure for immobilizing molecules with torus-like structures on various surfaces while maintaining identical operating parameters. There are currently several steps, including toxic solvent-based approaches using modified β-CD to covalently attach to surfaces with multistep reactions. However, the existing multistep process results in molecular orientation, restricts the accessibility of the hydrophobic barrel of β-CD's for practical use, and is effectively unable to use the surfaces immobilized with β-CD for a variety of applications. In this study, it was demonstrated that β-CD attached to the oxide-based semiconductor and metal surfaces through a condensation reaction between the hydroxyl-terminated oxide-based semiconductor/metal oxide and β-CD in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO₂) as a medium. The primary benefit of SCCO₂-assisted grafting of unmodified β-CD on various oxide-based metal and semiconductor surfaces is that it is a simple, efficient, one-step process and that it is ligand-free, scalable, substrate-independent, and uses minimal energy. Various physical microscopy and chemical spectroscopic methods were used to analyze the grafted β-CD oligomers. The application of the grafted β-CD films was demonstrated by the immobilization of rhodamine B (RhB), a dye, and dopamine, a drug. The in situ nucleation and growth of silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) in the molecular systems were studied for antibacterial and tribological properties by utilizing the guest-host interaction ability of β-CD.

Graphene electrochemical transistors decorated by Ag nanoparticles exhibiting high sensitivity for the detection of paraquat over a wide concentration range

Paraquat (PQ) is a nonselective contact herbicide used in agriculture for the control of broad leaf weeds, which would cause irreversible damage to human organs even at very low concentrations. Therefore, the trace residue detection of PQ in the environment is of vital importance. Here, a novel graphene electrochemical transistor (GECT) for PQ detection is reported for the first time. The key to the device design is the application of a layer of Ag nanoparticle (Ag NP) modified monolayer graphene as the channel layer. Due to the good electrochemical activity of Ag NPs for PQ detection, the device exhibits excellent sensitivity for PQ with the detection limit of 0.068 nM and a wide linear range from 0.1 nM to 5 mM. The GECT sensor also reveals good selectivity toward several common interferents and exhibits satisfactory recoveries for PQ detection when using Chinese cabbage as a simulant to deduce the real detection situation. The GECT sensor not only provides an efficient method for the detection of PQ residues, but also provides an effective grafting platform for the construction of novel high-sensitivity electrochemical sensors.

Supramolecular assemblies of a newly developed indole derivative for selective adsorption and photo-destruction of perfluoroalkyl substances

Per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) contamination has caused worldwide health concerns, and increased demand for effective elimination strategies. Herein, we developed a new indole derivative decorated with a hexadecane chain and a tertiary amine center (named di-indole hexadecyl ammonium, DIHA), which can form stable nanospheres (100-200 nm) in water via supramolecular assembly. As the DIHA nanospheres can induce electrostatic, hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions (all are long-ranged) that operative cooperatively, in addition to the nano-sized particles with large surface area, the DIHA nanocomposite exhibited extremely fast adsorption rates (in seconds), high adsorption capacities (0.764-0.857 g g^-1) and selective adsorption for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), outperformed the previous reported high-end PFASs adsorbents. Simultaneously, the DIHA nanospheres can produce hydrated electron (e_aq^-) when subjected to UV irradiation, with the virtue of constraining the photo-generated e_aq^- and the adsorbed PFOA/PFOS molecules entirely inside the nanocomposite. As such, the UV/DIHA system exhibits extremely high degradation/defluorination efficiency for PFOA/PFOS, even under ambient conditions, especially with the advantages of low chemical dosage requirement (μM level) and robust performance against environmental variables. Therefore, it is a new attempt of using supramolecular approach to construct an indole-based nanocomposite, which can elegantly combine adsorption and degradation functions. The novel DIHA nanoemulsion system would shed light on the treatment of PFAS-contaminated wastewater.

Preparation of β-cyclodextrin/dopamine hydrochloride-graphene oxide and its adsorption properties for sulfonamide antibiotics

To develop high-efficiency antibiotic adsorbents, β-cyclodextrin and dopamine hydrochloride were used to modify graphene oxide to prepare a new type of ternary composite material (β-cyclodextrin/dopamine hydrochloride-graphene oxide, CD-DGO). The material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier infrared spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and specific surface area optical analysis. Two typical sulfonamides antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine) adsorption capacity were evaluated in terms of the dosage of composite materials, the ratio of each component, and the pH of the solution. We analyzed the adsorption characteristics via adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms, and then investigated the stability of the adsorbent through desorption and regeneration of the adsorbent. The results show that the adsorption effect of sulfonamides antibiotics is best at pH = 2; the adsorption kinetics conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm; the maximum adsorption capacity of CD-DGO for sulfamethoxazole and sulfadiazine is 144 mg·g^-1 and 152 mg·g^-1, respectively. The material has good reusability, and the dominant force in the adsorption process is the π-π electron conjugation effect with hydrogen bonding. This offers a theoretical basis for the treatment of sulfonamides antibiotics water pollution.

Simple immunosensor for ultrasensitive electrochemical determination of biomarker of the bone metabolism in human serum

Ultrasensitive and selective determination of biomarkers of the bone metabolism in serum is crucial for early screening, timely treatment, and monitoring of the curative effect of osteoporosis, which is a silent disease with serious health threats. Immunoassay with a simple sensing interface and ultrahigh sensitivity is highly desirable. Herein, a simple electrochemical immunosensor is demonstrated based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) electrodeposited on chitosan-reduced graphene oxide (CS-G) composite modified electrode, which can achieve sensitive determination of the important biomarker of bone metabolism, bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein (BGP). To overcome the agglomeration of graphene and introduce a biocompatible matrix with functional amino groups, CS-G is prepared and modified on the supporting glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Then, AuNPs are electrodeposited on CS-G through their interaction between amine groups of CS. The immobilized AuNPs provide numerous binding sites to immobilize anti-BGP antibodies (Ab_BGP). The specific recognition between BGP and Ab_BGP results in a reduction in the mass transfer of the electrochemical probe (Fe(CN)₆^3-/4-) in solution, leading to a reduced electrochemical signal. Based on this mechanism, fast and ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of BGP is achieved when the concentration of BGP ranges from 100 ag ml⁻¹ to 10 μg mL⁻¹ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 20 ag ml⁻¹ (S/N = 3). The determination of BGP in human serum is also realized with high reliability.

Green syntheses of graphene and its applications in internet of things (IoT)-a status review

Internet of Things (IoT) is a trending technological field that converts any physical object into a communicable smarter one by converging the physical world with the digital world. This innovative technology connects the device to the internet and provides a platform to collect real-time data, cloud storage, and analyze the collected data to trigger smart actions from a remote location via remote notifications, etc. Because of its wide-ranging applications, this technology can be integrated into almost all the industries. Another trending field with tremendous opportunities is Nanotechnology, which provides many benefits in several areas of life, and helps to improve many technological and industrial sectors. So, integration of IoT and Nanotechnology can bring about the very important field of Internet of Nanothings (IoNT), which can re-shape the communication industry. For that, data (collected from trillions of nanosensors, connected to billions of devices) would be the 'ultimate truth', which could be generated from highly efficient nanosensors, fabricated from various novel nanomaterials, one of which is graphene, the so-called 'wonder material' of the 21st century. Therefore, graphene-assisted IoT/IoNT platforms may revolutionize the communication technologies around the globe. In this article, a status review of the smart applications of graphene in the IoT sector is presented. Firstly, various green synthesis of graphene for sustainable development is elucidated, followed by its applications in various nanosensors, detectors, actuators, memory, and nano-communication devices. Also, the future market prospects are discussed to converge various emerging concepts like machine learning, fog/edge computing, artificial intelligence, big data, and blockchain, with the graphene-assisted IoT field to bring about the concept of 'all-round connectivity in every sphere possible'.

Cyclodextrin modified green synthesized graphene oxide@iron nanoparticle composites for enhanced removal of oxytetracycline

The presence of residual antibiotics will lead to potential environmental risks. Here cyclodextrins (CDs) were successfully used to modify graphene-based iron nanoparticles (GO@Fe NPs) to enhance the absorption of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). The removal of OTC decreased in the order: γCD-GO@Fe NPs > βCD-GO@Fe NPs > αCD-GO@Fe NPs > GO@Fe NPs, with better performance than that of bare GO and Fe NPs. Characterization techniques were applied to better understand how CDs impact the structure of GO@Fe NPs and improve removal performance. Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that GO acted as a carrier to support Fe NPs within the grafted cyclodextrin, where GO also participated in the removal process. Cyclodextrin modified GO@Fe NPs had relatively small particle sizes (15 nm), with a high surface area (61.7 m² · g^-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that cyclodextrin acted as both a stabilizing and capping agent during green synthesis, which could protect the reactivity of Fe NPs and simultaneously reduce aggregation. A potential synthesis mechanism of cyclodextrins modified composites was also proposed, and subsequent wastewater testing indicated that γCD-GO@Fe NPs had high potential for practical applications.

Silica Nanochannel Array Film Supported by ß-Cyclodextrin-Functionalized Graphene Modified Gold Film Electrode for Sensitive and Direct Electroanalysis of Acetaminophen

Convenient and sensitive detection of active analytes in complex matrix is crucial in biological, medical, and environmental analysis. Silica nanochannel array film (SNF) equipped electrochemical sensors have shown excellent anti-fouling performance in direct analysis of complex samples. In this work, we demonstrated an electrochemical sensor with anti-fouling performance for highly sensitive detection of acetaminophen (APAP) based on SNF supported by ß-cyclodextrin-graphene (CDG) nanocomposite modified Au film electrode (AuF). Because of their rich surface hydroxyls and 2D lamellar structure, CDG on AuF can serve as the nanoadhesive for compact binding SNF, which can be grown by electrochemical assisted self-assembly method in a few seconds. Attributable to the electrocatalytic property of graphene and the synergistic enrichment from both CD and SNF nanochannels towards analyte, the SNF/CDG/AuF sensor demonstrates sensitive detection of acetaminophen ranged from 0.2 to 50 μM with an ultralow limit-of-detection of 14 nM. Taking advantage of the anti-fouling ability of SNF, the sensor is able to realize accurate and convenient analysis of APAP in commercially available paracetamol tablets.

Size compatibility and concentration dependent supramolecular host-guest interactions at interfaces

The quantification of supramolecular host-guest interactions is important for finely modulating supramolecular systems. Previously, most host-guest interactions quantified using force spectroscopic techniques have been reported in force units. However, accurately evaluating the adhesion energies of host-guest pairs remains challenging. Herein, using a surface forces apparatus, we directly quantify the interaction energies between cyclodextrin (CD)-modified surfaces and ditopic adamantane (DAd) molecules in water as a function of the DAd concentration and the CD cavity size. The adhesion energy of the β-CD-DAd complex drastically increased with increasing DAd concentration and reached saturation. Moreover, the molecular adhesion energy of a single host-guest inclusion complex was evaluated to be ~9.51 kBT. This approach has potential for quantifying fundamental information toward furthering the understanding of supramolecular chemistry and its applications, such as molecular actuators, underwater adhesives, and biosensors, which require precise tuning of specific host-guest interactions.

Cyclodextrins: Structural, Chemical, and Physical Properties, and Applications

Due to their unique structural, physical and chemical properties, cyclodextrins and their derivatives have been of great interest to scientists and researchers in both academia and industry for over a century. Many of the industrial applications of cyclodextrins have arisen from their ability to encapsulate, either partially or fully, other molecules, especially organic compounds. Cyclodextrins are non-toxic oligopolymers of glucose that help to increase the solubility of organic compounds with poor aqueous solubility, can mask odors from foul-smelling compounds, and have been widely studied in the area of drug delivery. In this review, we explore the structural and chemical properties of cyclodextrins that give rise to this encapsulation (i.e., the formation of inclusion complexes) ability. This review is unique from others written on this subject because it provides powerful insights into factors that affect cyclodextrin encapsulation. It also examines these insights in great detail. Later, we provide an overview of some industrial applications of cyclodextrins, while emphasizing the role of encapsulation in these applications. We strongly believe that cyclodextrins will continue to garner interest from scientists for many years to come, and that novel applications of cyclodextrins have yet to be discovered.

Advances and Classification of Cyclodextrin-Based Polymers for Food-Related Issues

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a good alternative to reduce or enhance different biomolecule characteristics and have demonstrated great results in food science. However, CDs present intrinsic limitations that can be solved by derivative synthesis. This review represents a survey of the state of the art of CD-based materials and their uses in food science. A deep review of the structure is carried out and different groups for ordination are suggested. After that, different applications such as cholesterol complexation or its use as sensors are reviewed. The derivatives show novel and promising activities for the industry. A critical perspective of the materials suggests that they might not present toxicity, although more studies are required. These points suggest that the research in this field will be increased in the following years.

Recent Advances of Porous Materials Based on Cyclodextrin

Porous materials have attracted significant attention because of their rising applications in many fields. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are suitable building units in the fabrication of porous materials owing to their intrinsic nanoporous structure, easy modification, and biocompatibility, which may result in the formation of CD-based organic frameworks (including cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) and cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (CD-COFs)), and CD-based polymer hybrid porous materials. This review focuses on the recent progress in the fabrication and applications of CD-based porous materials with novel structures and functionalities.

Harnessing selectivity in chemical sensing via supramolecular interactions: from functionalization of nanomaterials to device applications

Chemical sensing is a strategic field of science and technology ultimately aiming at improving the quality of our lives and the sustainability of our Planet. Sensors bear a direct societal impact on well-being, which includes the quality and composition of the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Pristine low-dimensional materials are widely exploited as highly sensitive elements in chemical sensors, although they suffer from lack of intrinsic selectivity towards specific analytes. Here, we showcase the most recent strategies on the use of (supra)molecular interactions to harness the selectivity of suitably functionalized 0D, 1D, and 2D low-dimensional materials for chemical sensing. We discuss how the design and selection of receptors via machine learning and artificial intelligence hold a disruptive potential in chemical sensing, where selectivity is achieved by the design and high-throughput screening of large libraries of molecules exhibiting a set of affinity parameters that dictates the analyte specificity. We also discuss the importance of achieving selectivity along with other relevant characteristics in chemical sensing, such as high sensitivity, response speed, and reversibility, as milestones for true practical applications. Finally, for each distinct class of low-dimensional material, we present the most suitable functionalization strategies for their incorporation into efficient transducers for chemical sensing.

Functionalization of gold nanoparticles by β-cyclodextrin as a probe for the detection of heavy metals in water and photocatalytic degradation of textile dye

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and AuNPs functionalized by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD/AuNPs) were prepared successfully through chemical reduction method. The structural, morphological, optical, compositional and vibrational studies for the AuNPs and β-CD/AuNPs were carried out. Functionalization of AuNPs by β-CD was confirmed with FT-IR results. The UV-visible absorption spectra exhibit a red-shift with decreasing average particle size. This sustains the enhancement in surface area (SA) to volume (V) ratio that is one of the peculiar characteristics of nanoparticles. TEM results show that β-CD/AuNPs formed were monodispersed and self assembled. Also it shows a decrease in average particle size and improved distribution. The use of β-CD in the synthesis of AuNPs are revealed not only create uniform small sized nanoparticles but these water soluble nanoparticles have very good antibacterial action by inhibiting the growth of bacteria commonly found in water and sensing activity for sensing the concentration of toxic metals in water. The sensitivity of the system towards copper (Cu) concentration was found as 1.788/mM for β-CD/AuNPs and 1.333/mM for AuNPs. The photocatalytic action of the obtained nanoparticles increases with decreasing average particle size. The k_app value of this photocatalytic degradation of textile dyeing waste water in presence of AuNPs was 0.002/min and β-CD/AuNPs was 0.005/min. This is a non-toxic and eco-friendly approach.

Simultaneous determination of nitrophenol isomers based on reduced graphene oxide modified with sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin

The present study reports the development of an electrochemical sensor based on sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin modified reduced graphene oxide hybrid (SBCD-rGO) for simultaneous detection of nitrophenol isomers. First, SBCD-rGO hybrid was synthesized and detailed characterized. Afterwards, a sensor was fabricated via the modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with SBCD-rGO, and its electrochemical detection performances were also investigated. Then, the constructed electrochemical sensor was applied to detect nitrophenol isomers by voltammetry analysis. The results suggested that the sensitivities were 389.26, 280.88 and 217.19 μA/mM for p-nitrophenol (p-NP), m-nitrophenol (m-NP), and o-nitrophenol (o-NP), respectively, and their corresponding detection limits were all about 0.05 μM. Significantly, the combination of voltammetry analysis with the constructed sensor and data analysis by multiple linear regression realized the simultaneous detection of nitrophenol isomers.

A new Ti-based IMAC nanohybrid with high hydrophilicity and enhanced absorption capacity for the selective enrichment of phosphopeptides

Ti-based immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) nanomaterial has shown high potential in phosphoproteome mass-spectrometric (MS) analysis. However, the limited surface area and poor solubility will greatly restrict its use in phosphoproteome research. To overcome these two key drawbacks, a novel Ti-based IMAC nanomaterial was prepared by Ti-bonded β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) anchored on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (denoted as COOH-CNTs-CD-Ti) and successfully applied as a biofunctional adsorbent for selectively enriching trace phosphopeptides. In the selective enrichment process, CNTs provided greater surface area for the absorption of phosphopeptides, while β-CD also offered a greater opportunity for the interaction between phosphopeptides and Ti⁴⁺. COOH-CNTs-CD-Ti with the aforementioned properities exhibited higher selectivity for phosphopeptides from the standard protein digests, the tryptic digests of nonfat milk and human serum, showing a great selective enrichment capability towards complex biological samples.

da Silva Alves D, Okeke C, Breslin CB. Cyclodextrins as Supramolecular Recognition Systems: Applications in the Fabrication of Electrochemical Sensors

Supramolecular chemistry, although focused mainly on noncovalent intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, which are considerably weaker than covalent interactions, can be employed to fabricate sensors with a remarkable affinity for a target analyte. In this review the development of cyclodextrin-based electrochemical sensors is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the general properties of cyclodextrins and their ability to form inclusion complexes, the cyclodextrin-based sensors are introduced. This includes the combination of cyclodextrins with reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, conducting polymers, enzymes and aptamers, and electropolymerized cyclodextrin films. The applications of these materials as chiral recognition agents and biosensors and in the electrochemical detection of environmental contaminants, biomolecules and amino acids, drugs and flavonoids are reviewed and compared. Based on the papers reviewed, it is clear that cyclodextrins are promising molecular recognition agents in the creation of electrochemical sensors, chiral sensors, and biosensors. Moreover, they have been combined with a host of materials to enhance the detection of the target analytes. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including the development of more robust methods for the integration of cyclodextrins into the sensing unit.

Construction of natural polymeric imprinted materials and their applications in water treatment: A review

Molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs) have been widely used in various fields, including water treatment, chemical sensing, and biotechnology, because of their specific recognition and high selectivity. MIMs are usually obtained via two successive steps, namely, (1) copolymerization and crosslinking reactions of the preassembled complex of comonomers and a specific target compound (2) and thorough removal of template molecules. Some functional polymers are directly used as supporting materials and functional groups assembled with target compound are provided to simplify the preparation of MIMs. Natural polymers, such as chitosan, cyclodextrin, sodium alginate, starch, cellulose, lignin and their derivatives, are good candidates because of their environmentally friendly properties, low costs, and abundant active functional groups. In this study, different methods for the preparation of natural polymeric MIMs were reviewed in terms of the construction of microscopic binding cavities and macroscopic visible condensed structures with different shapes. Natural polymeric MIMs in water treatment applications, such as adsorption and detection of various pollutants from aqueous solutions, were summarized. Prospects on the development of novel and high-performance natural polymeric MIMs were discussed to overcome the difficulties in their preparation and applications.

A reduced graphene oxide-β-cyclodextrin nanocomposite-based electrode for electrochemical detection of curcumin

In this study, a sensitive electrochemical sensor was fabricated based on a beta-cyclodextrin–reduced graphene oxide (β-CD–rGO) nanocomposite for measuring curcumin concentration.

Efficient photoelectrocatalytic performance of beta-cyclodextrin/graphene composite and effect of Cl− in water: degradation for bromophenol blue as a case study

Photoelectrocatalytic technology has proven to be an efficient way of degrading organic contaminants, including dyes. Graphene (GR) -based catalysts have been frequently used in photoelectrocatalysis, due to their excellent catalytic performances. In this work, the GR/beta-cyclodextrin (GR/β-CD) composite was prepared and used for a widely used triphenylmethane dye (bromophenol blue, BPB) photoelectrocatalytic degradation. The results indicated that the degradation of the prepared GR/β-CD composite for BPB was effective with the combination of external bias voltage and simulated sunlight irradiation. Under optimum conditions, the BPB (10 mg L⁻¹) was completely eliminated by GR/β-CD composite within 120 min. ˙O₂⁻ played a prominent role in the BPB photoelectrocatalytic degradation. The time required for the removal of BPB in water to reach 100% can be reduced to 30 min with the presence of Cl⁻, owing to the generation of ˙Cl. Moreover, the toxicity of the degraded system with Cl⁻, predicted by the QSAR (Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship) model in ECOSAR (Ecological Structure–Activity Relationships) program, was weaker than that without Cl⁻. The prepared GR/β-CD composite revealed great advantages in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants due to its metal-free, low cost, simplicity, and efficient performance. This work provided new insight into the efficient and safe degradation of organic pollutants in wastewaters.

O₂˙⁻ played a crucial role in the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of BPB by the prepared GR/β-CD. Cl⁻ marginally promoted the degradation of BPB and chlorinated intermediates were generated.

Engineering the interface in graphene oxide/epoxy composites using bio-based epoxy-graphene oxide nanomaterial to achieve superior anticorrosion performance

The protective performance of graphene/polymer composite coatings largely depends on the interface design in resin matrix. Herein, we report the synthesis of bio-based cardanol epoxy modified graphene oxide (GODN) nanomaterial and its application in epoxy coatings for the achievement of fine interface toward high performance anticorrosion composite coatings. The chemical composition of prepared GODN nanomaterial was investigated by FTIR, Raman and XPS spectra, respectively. The presence of cardanol epoxy attached on GO surface promotes the formation of chemical bonds between GO and epoxy resin, providing strong interfacial interaction and enhanced adhesion. Electrochemical results revealed that the GODN1%/EP composite coating exhibits high impedance (4.38 × 10⁸ Ω cm²) even after 45 days immersion. Compared with pure EP coating, the localized corrosion reaction of GODN1%/EP coating can be inhibited under defected interface. The enhanced protective performance of GODN/EP composite coating was attributed to two aspects: (1) the impermeable GO greatly suppressed the penetration of aggressive ions and (2) the attached cardanol epoxy chains effectively improved the interfacial interaction and thus inhibited the crack propagation.

Surface modification of zero-valent iron nanoparticles with β-cyclodextrin for 4-nitrophenol conversion

Environmental pollution causes irreversible damage to ecosystems and their structure. Therefore, the development of novel remedial techniques is a must for an effective response to emerging contaminants and those already persisting in the environment. The nanosized zero-valent iron (nZVI) is considered as an important nanostructure for the degradation of toxic compounds. Furthermore, the degradative potential of nZVI may be improved by surface modification. In this work nZVI was functionalized with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), which is considered to be an environmentally-friendly and cheap adsorbent for toxic pollutants. Such a 'green' improvement not only enhances the activity of nZVI but also enables the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, which under standard conditions is persistent and does not significantly react with bare nZVI. This research may help to find a solution to treat persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in aqueous environment.

Uptake of micropollutant-bisphenol A, methylene blue and neutral red onto a novel bagasse-β-cyclodextrin polymer by adsorption process

The presence of emerging micropollutants and dyes in water resource has raised global concern about their intense effects to aquatic environments, ecosystem and human health in general. So far, various adsorbents have been suggested for reducing the levels of bisphenol A, methylene blue and neutral red contamination in wastewaters. However, a number of these adsorbents seemed to have low adsorptive capacities and regeneration performances. In view of these, batch experiment was performed to decontaminate these pollutants from aqueous solutions using an optimized bagasse-β-cyclodextrin polymer (SB-β-CD). Characterization studies of SB-β-CD were performed using FTIR, pH point of zero charge, XRD and BET methods. Adsorption of BPA, MB and NR was favored at lower temperature (298 K) and pH of 7.0, 9.0 and 6.0, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of BPA, MB and NR at 298 K was 121, 963 and 685 mg g^-1, respectively. Hydrogen bonding through host-guest inclusion and electrostatic interactions could respectively attribute to uptake of BPA and MB/NR onto SB-β-CD. Adsorption kinetics of three pollutants followed pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir and Freundlich models were fitted to describe the adsorption of BPA and MB/NR, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed the occurrence of physical adsorption which is spontaneous and exothermic in nature. SB-β-CD loaded with BPA and MB/NR was certainly reused by 75% ethanol and 0.1 mol L^-1 HCl solutions, respectively. Novel SB-β-CD showed better adsorptive capacity and regeneration performances; consequently can offers practical application for removal of BPA, MB and NR from wastewaters.
