Kinetically controlled assembly of a spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon into polyhedral micro/nanocrystals

Tuning the Absorption, Fluorescence, Intramolecular Charge Transfer, and Intersystem Crossing in Spiro[fluorene]acridinone

In this work, we prepared a series of electron donor-acceptor systems based on spiro[fluorene-9,7'-dibenzo[c,h]acridine]-5'-one (SFDBAO). Our SFDBAOs consist of orthogonally positioned fluorenes and aromatic ketones. By fine-tuning the substitution of electron-donating pyrenes, the complex interplay among different excited-state decay channels and the overall impact of solvents on these decay channels were uncovered. Placing pyrene, for example, at the aromatic ketones resulted in a profound solvatochromism in the form of a bright charge-transfer (CT) emission spanning from yellow to red-NIR. In contrast, a dark non-emissive CT was noted upon pyrene substitution at the fluorenes. In apolar solvents, efficient triplet-excited state generation was observed for all SFDBAOs. Either charge transfer was concluded to mediate the intersystem crossing (ISC) in the case of pyrene substitution or the El-Sayed rule was applicable when lacking pyrene substitution as in the case of SFABAO. In polar solvents, charge separation is the sole decay upon pyrene substitution. Moreover, competition between ISC and CT lowered the triplet-excited state generation in SFDBAO.

Regulating and Predicting the Polyhedral Crystal Morphology in Spirofluorene Molecular Systems

Crystallization of organic steric molecules often leads to multiple polyhedral crystal morphologies. However, the relationships among the molecular structure, supramolecular interaction, aggregation mode and crystal morphology are still unclear. In this work, we elaborate two model crystals formed by spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] (SFX) and spiro[cyclopenta[1,2-b : 5,4-b']dipyridine-5,9'-xanthene] (SDAFX) to demonstrate the feasibility of morphology prediction by periodic bond chain (PBC) theory based on interaction energy (IE) values in terms of single point energy. With non-directional van der Waals forces, only one PBC direction is found in SFX crystal, leading to the irregular 1D rod-like structure. Compared with SFX, the extra N heteroatoms in SDAFX can bring additional hydrogen bonds and some other interactions into the bulky molecular skeletons, inducing 3-dimensionally oriented PBCs to form the explicit F-face network in SDAFX which leads to the final octahedral structure. A simple and accurate method has been provided to quantify PBC vector on the supramolecular level in the organic molecular system, and the PBC theory has also been further demonstrated and developed in the morphology prediction of organic spiro-molecules.

Synchronous assembly of chiral skeletal single-crystalline microvessels

Skeletal or concave polyhedral crystals appear in a variety of synthetic processes and natural environments. However, their morphology, size, and orientation are difficult to control because of their highly kinetic growth character. We report a methodology to achieve synchronous, uniaxial, and stepwise growth of micrometer-scale skeletal single crystals from planar-chiral double-decker molecules. Upon drop-casting of a heated ethanol solution onto a quartz substrate, the molecules spontaneously assemble into standing vessel-shaped single crystals uniaxially and synchronously over the wide area of the substrate, with small size polydispersity. The crystal edge is active even after consumption of the molecules and resumes stereoselective growth with successive feeding. The resultant morphology can be packed into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-like microarchitectures and behaves as a microscopic container.

A Bio-Inspired Molecular Design Strategy toward 2D Organic Semiconductor Crystals with Superior Integrated Optoelectronic Properties

Inspired by the 2D bilayer lipid membranes in nature, a unique supramolecular "push-pull" synergetic strategy toward self-assembled 2D organic crystals (2DOCs) is proposed in this work, which can effectively suppress the interlayer 3D stacking while maintaining the assembly of the intralayer for 2D growth. For this purpose, a model molecule PF-Py consisting of a planar supramolecular "attractor" and a nonplanar steric "repellor" is designed for the solution self-assembly process. Well-defined 2DOCs including crystal nanosheets and millimeter-sized crystal films with layered amphiphile-like packing are obtained, which is analogical to the cell membranes of living organisms. Thanks to the special packing mode, the 2DOCs have fascinating integrated photoelectric property, with high mobility of 7.8 × 10^-2 cm² V^-1 s^-1 , high crystalline state photoluminescence quantum yield of 55%, and superior deep-blue laser characteristics with a low threshold of 5.51 µJ cm^-2 . This supramolecular synergetic strategy advances the design of 2D organic semiconductor crystals for high performance optoelectronics.

Fluorescent nanorods based on 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives for efficient and long-term bioimaging

Fluorescent nanoparticles based on 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives (4,4'-((1E,1'E)-anthracene-9,10-diylbis(ethene-2,1-diyl))bis(N,N-dimethylaniline) (NDSA) and 4,4'-((1E,1'E)-anthracene-9,10-diylbis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dibenzonitrile (CNDSA)) were prepared using an ultrasound aided nanoprecipitation method. The morphologies of the fluorescent nanoparticles could be controlled by adjusting the external ultrasonication time. NDSA or CNDSA could form spherical nanodots (NDSA NDs, CNDSA NDs) in a THF-H2O mixture with an 80% or 70% water fraction when the ultrasonication time was 30 s. When the ultrasonication time was prolonged to 10 min, NDSA and CNDSA could assemble into nanorods (NDSA NRs, CNDSA NRs). Meanwhile, the sizes of NDSA NRs and CNDSA NRs could be controlled by adjusting the water content in the mixture. As the water fraction was increased from 60% to 80%, the sizes of NDSA and CNDSA nanorods or nanodots reduced from 238.4 nm to 140.3 nm, and 482 nm to 198.4 nm, respectively. When the water fraction was up to 90%, irregular morphologies of NDSA and CNDSA could be observed. The nanoparticles exhibited intense fluorescence emission, good anti-photobleaching properties, as well as excellent stability and biocompatibility. In vitro cell imaging experiments indicated that the nanorods prepared by this simple method had the potential to be used for efficient and noninvasive long-term bioimaging.

A small molecule with a big scissoring effect: sodium dodecyl sulfate working on two-dimensional metal–organic frameworks

Molecular Crystal Microcapsules: Formation of Sealed Hollow Chambers via Surfactant-Mediated Growth

Hollow organic molecular cocrystals comprised of 9-methylanthracene-1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (9MA-TCNB) and naphthalene-1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (NAPH-TCNB) were fabricated using a surfactant-mediated co-reprecipitation method. The crystals exhibit a narrow size distribution that can be easily tuned by varying the concentration of surfactant and incubation temperature. The rectangular crystals possess symmetrical twinned cavities with an estimated storage volume on the order of 10^-10  L. An aqueous dye solution can be incorporated into the cavities during crystal growth and stored inside for up to several hours, confirming the sealed nature of the hollow chambers. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to harness non-classical crystal growth to fabricate organic molecular crystals with novel topologies.

Enhanced emission in organic nanocrystals via asymmetrical design of spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Two spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives were prepared to clarify the molecular geometry effects on the regulation of the crystalline morphologies and photophysical behaviors of organic nanocrystals. Due to the different structural symmetry of a spiro-center, distinguishing nanocrystal morphologies with unique crystallization-enhanced/quenched emission was achieved.

The Dimensionality Transition between Three-Dimensional and Two-Dimensional Organic Microcrystals: Specific Symmetry and Selective Adhesion

A three-dimensional-two-dimensional dimensionality transition of organic microcrystals was performed via elongated octahedrons, oblique octahedrons, diamond-like particles, and parallelograms using nonplanar 2,7-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] molecules. The specific crystal symmetry and selective adhesion of P123 on the {11-1}s facet are supposed to induce the morphological transition.

Photoinduced peeling of molecular crystals

Block-like microcrystals composed of cis-dimethyl-2(3-(anthracen-9-yl)allylidene)malonate are grown from aqueous surfactant solutions. A pulse of 405 nm light converts a fraction of molecules to the trans isomer, creating an amorphous mixed layer that peels off the parent crystal. This photoinduced delamination can be repeated multiple times on the same block.

Supramolecular steric hindrance effect on morphologies and photophysical behaviors of spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon nanocrystals

Three pyrene-based spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Py-SAHs) were prepared to clarify the roles of molecular segments in regulating the morphologies and photophysical properties of organic microcrystals. Due to the different supramolecular steric hindrance (SSH) effect between bulky groups and pyrene rings, distinct nanocrystal morphologies with unique photoluminescence properties were realized.

Photomechanically Induced Magnetic Field Response by Controlling Molecular Orientation in 9-Methylanthracene Microcrystals

A surfactant-assisted seeded-growth method is used to form single-crystal platelets composed of 9-methylanthracene with two different internal molecular orientations. The more stable form exhibits a photoinduced twisting, as observed previously for 9-methylanthracene microribbons grown by the floating drop method. However, the newly discovered elongated hexagonal platelets undergo a photoinduced rolling-up and unrolling. The ability of the rolled-up cylindrical shape to trap superparamagnetic nanoparticles enables it to be carried along in a magnetic field gradient. The new photoinduced shape change, made possible by a novel surfactant-assisted crystal growth method, opens up the possibility of using light to modulate the crystal translational motion.

Highly branched photomechanical crystals

When a suspension of the tert-butyl ester of 4-fluoroanthracene-9-carboxylic acid (4F9AC) was slowly hydrolyzed, highly branched photomechanical microcrystals of 4F9AC were grown. Exposure to UV light caused the branches to undergo a reversible sweeping motion that could be used to move and concentrate silica microspheres on a surface.

SMART Design of a Bulk-Capped Supramolecular Segment for the Assembly into Organic Interdigital Lipid Bilayer-Like (ILB) Nanosheets

Rational molecular design for the organic nanocrystal morphology still remains a challenge due to the structural diversity and complicated weak intermolecular interactions. In this work, a typical attractor-repulsor molecule N,N-diphenyl-4-(9-phenyl-fluoren-9-yl) phenylamine (TPA-PF) is designed to explore a general assembly strategy for 2D nanocrystals. Via an interdigital lipid bilayer-like (ILB) molecular packing mode, large-sized lamellar 2D nanosheets are obtained with a length:width:thickness ratio as ≈2500:1000:1. The d-spacing of the largest (001) plane is 1.32 nm, which equals to the thickness of a single interdigital stacking layer. The synergetic effect of the attractive supramolecular segment (TPA) and the repulsive bulky group (PF) is supposed to be the critical factor for the ILB packing that leads to the 2D structures. The attractor-repulsor molecule design is expected to be an effective strategy for the growth of 2D nanocrystals based on small organic molecules.

Proton triggered emission and selective sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol using a fluorescent hydrosol of 2-phenylquinoline

Compound 2-phenylquinoline (PhQ) displayed novel aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics in its aggregate/solid state. It allows reversible fluorescence switching in acidic and basic media and ‘turn off’ fluorescence sensor for TNP.

Photooxygenations and Self-Sensitizations of Naphthylamines: Efficient Access to Iminoquinones

A series of spiro [fluorene-9,7′-dibenzo[c,h]acridine]-5′-one (SFDBAO) derivatives have been concisely and cleanly obtained by exposure to sunlight without external photosensitizers in the higher yields than that when using a UV lamp. An interesting autocatalyst and self-sensitive procedure have been proposed to explain the effective photooxygenation. SFDBAO derivatives exhibit the continuous π-stacks in single-crystal and electron-withdraw properties with red light-emitting and photovoltaic properties.

One-minute self-assembly of millimetre-long DAST crystalline microbelts via substrate-supported rapid evaporation crystallization

We propose a substrate-supported rapid evaporation crystallization method to rapidly self-assemble microbelts of DAST, a benchmark organic NLO crystal. DAST microbelt formation depends on substrate properties and surfactant.

Porphyrin Diacid-Polyelectrolyte Assemblies: Effective Photocatalysts in Solution

Developing effective and versatile photocatalytic systems is of great potential in solar energy conversion. Here we investigate the formation of supramolecular catalysts by electrostatic self-assembly in aqueous solution: Combining positively charged porphyrins with negatively charged polyelectrolytes leads to nanoscale assemblies where, next to electrostatic interactions, π⁻π interactions also play an important role. Porphyrin diacid-polyelectrolyte assemblies exhibit a substantially enhanced catalytic activity for the light-driven oxidation of iodide. Aggregates with the hexavalent cationic porphyrin diacids show up to 22 times higher catalytic activity than the corresponding aggregates under neutral conditions. The catalytic activity can be increased by increasing the valency of the porphyrin and by choice of the loading ratio. The structural investigation of the supramolecular catalysts took place via atomic force microscopy and small angle neutron scattering. Hence, a new facile concept for the design of efficient and tunable self-assembled photocatalysts is presented.

Crystal induced phosphorescence from Benz(a)anthracene microcrystals at room temperature

Pure organic compounds that are also phosphorescent at room temperature are very rare in literature. Here, we report efficient phosphorescence emission from aggregated hydrosol of Benz(a)anthracene (BaA) at room temperature. Aggregated hydrosol of BaA has been synthesized by re-precipitation method and SDS is used as morphology directing agent. Morphology of the particles is characterized using optical and scanning electronic microcopy (SEM). Photophysical properties of the aggregated hydrosol are carried out using UV-vis, steady state and time resolved fluorescence study. The large stoke shifted structured emission from aggregated hydrosol of BaA has been explained due to phosphorescence emission of BaA at room temperature. In the crystalline state, the restricted intermolecular motions (RIM) such as rotations and vibrations are activated by crystal lattice. This rigidification effect makes the chromophore phosphorescent at room temperature. The possible stacking arrangement of the neighboring BaA within the aggregates has been substantiated by computing second order Fukui parameter as local reactivity descriptors. Computational study also reveals that the neighboring BaA molecules are present in parallel slipped conformation in its aggregated crystalline form.

Aggregation induced emission from α-napthoflavone microstructures and its cyto-toxicity

α-Napthoflavone (ANF) microstructures of various morphologies were synthesized using reprecipitation method. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) was used as morphology directing agent. The morphologies of the particles were characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Single crystal data of ANF suggests that the aromatic units of ANF are in parallel slipped conformation in its aggregated form. Photophysical properties of aggregated ANF hydrosol were studied using UV-Vis absorption, steady state and time resolved spectroscopy. Red shift and broadening of UV-Vis spectra of ANF hydrosol are explained due to strong π-π and H-π interactions among the neighboring ANF molecules within the aggregated microstructures. Though ANF is non-luminescent in good solvent, a strong emission is observed in its aggregated state. This aggregation induced emission (AIE) has been explained due to restriction of intramoleculer rotation and large amplitude vibrational modes of ANF in its aggregated state. Our Photophysical study also reveals that AIE effect decreases after an optimum concentration of ANF and this has been explained due to softening of crystal lattice. Cytotoxicity of ANF hydrosol was examined to get an idea of the toxic level of this hydrosol toward cultured normal human cells. It is observed that ANF hydrosol may draw beneficial effect in biological application as it has no higher toxic activity but has antioxidant property.

Organic nanophotonic materials: the relationship between excited-state processes and photonic performances

Organic active nanophotonics: excited-state coupled photonic behaviours strongly determine the optical performances of organic nanomaterials. The photonic actions and related material properties can be well controlled by tailoring the intra/inter-molecular excited-state processes.

The photoirradiation induced p-n junction in naphthylamine-based organic photovoltaic cells

The bulk heterojunction (BHJ) plays an indispensable role in organic photovoltaics, and thus has been investigated extensively in recent years. While a p-n heterojunction is usually fabricated using two different donor and acceptor materials such as poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), it is really rare that such a BHJ is constructed by a single entity. Here, we presented a photoirradiation-induced p-n heterojunction in naphthylamine-based organic photovoltaic cells, where naphthylamine as a typical p-type semiconductor could be oxidized under photoirradiation and transformed into a new semiconductor with the n-type character. The p-n heterojunction was realized using both the remaining naphthylamine and its oxidative product, giving rise to the performance improvement in organic photovoltaic devices. The experimental results show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the devices could be achieved up to 1.79% and 0.43% in solution and thin film processes, respectively. Importantly, this technology using naphthylamine does not require classic P3HT and PCBM to realize the p-n heterojunction, thereby simplifying the device fabrication process. The present approach opens up a promising route for the development of novel materials applicable to the p-n heterojunction.

Self-assembly of functional molecules into 1D crystalline nanostructures

Self-assembled functional nanoarchitectures are employed as important nanoscale building blocks for advanced materials and smart miniature devices to fulfill the increasing needs of high materials usage efficiency, low energy consumption, and high-performance devices. One-dimensional (1D) crystalline nanostructures, especially molecule-composed crystalline nanostructures, attract significant attention due to their fascinating infusion structure and functionality which enables the easy tailoring of organic molecules with excellent carrier mobility and crystal stability. In this review, we discuss the recent progress of 1D crystalline self-assembled nanostructures of functional molecules, which include both a small molecule-derived and a polymer-based crystalline nanostructure. The basic principles of the molecular structure design and the process engineering of 1D crystalline nanostructures are also discussed. The molecular building blocks, self-assembly structures, and their applications in optical, electrical, and photoelectrical devices are overviewed and we give a brief outlook on crucial issues that need to be addressed in future research endeavors.

Controlling the growth of porphyrin based nanostructures for tuning third-order NLO properties

A series of porphyrin nanospindles with controlled long axis length distributions of 330, 550, 800 nm, and 4 μm have been successfully fabricated via hierarchical self-assembly of cationic porphyrin (H₆TPyP)(4+) with the help of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) due to the effective electrostatic interaction. These newly fabricated nanostructures are characterized by TEM and SEM techniques, powder X-ray diffraction analysis, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The Z-scan technique with a laser duration of 5 ns at the wavelength of 532 nm reveals unreported size-dependent third-order NLO switching properties: the nonlinear absorption changes from saturation absorption to reversed saturation absorption and the nonlinear refraction from self-defocus to self-focus due to the change of the dominant scattering effect, from Rayleigh scattering for nanostructures with a smaller size than the wavelength of laser light, to Mie scattering for nanostructures with a larger size than the laser wavelength. This result is useful for the development of organic nanostructures with desired NLO properties, in particular the optical limiting properties.

Fluorene-based macromolecular nanostructures and nanomaterials for organic (opto)electronics

Nanotechnology not only opens up the realm of nanoelectronics and nanophotonics, but also upgrades organic thin-film electronics and optoelectronics. In this review, we introduce polymer semiconductors and plastic electronics briefly, followed by various top-down and bottom-up nano approaches to organic electronics. Subsequently, we highlight the progress in polyfluorene-based nanoparticles and nanowires (nanofibres), their tunable optoelectronic properties as well as their applications in polymer light-emitting devices, solar cells, field-effect transistors, photodetectors, lasers, optical waveguides and others. Finally, an outlook is given with regard to four-element complex devices via organic nanotechnology and molecular manufacturing that will spread to areas such as organic mechatronics in the framework of robotic-directed science and technology.

Spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-based organic nanosheets for eco-friendly aqueous processed thin-film non-volatile memory devices

Supramolecular steric hindrance designs make pyrene-functionalized spiro[fluorene-9,7'-dibenzo[c,h]acridine]-5'-one (Py-SFDBAO) assemble into 2D nanostructures that facilitate aqueous phase large-area synthesis of high-quality and uniform crystalline thin films. Thin-film diodes using aqueous nanosheets as active layers exhibit a non-volatile bistable electrical switching feature with ON/OFF ratios of 6.0 × 10(4) and photoswitching with conductive gains of 10(2) -10(3). Organic nanosheets are potentially key components for eco-friendly aqueous dispersed organic nano-inks in the application of printed and flexible electronics.

Self-assembly of morphology-tunable architectures from tetraarylmethane derivatives for targeted drug delivery

Tetraarylmethane compounds consisting of two pyrogallol and two aniline units, namely, Ar2CAr'2 {Ar = 3,4,5-C6H2(OH)3 and Ar' = 3,5-R2-4-C6H2NH2 [R = Me (1), iPr (2)]} exhibit excellent self-assembly behavior. Compound 1 yields size-tunable hollow nanospheres (HNSs) with a narrow size distribution, and 2 yields various morphologies ranging from microtubules to microrods via self-assembly induced by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. On the basis of the experimental results, a plausible mechanism for morphology tunability was proposed. As a means of utilizing the self-assembled HNSs for targeting controlled drug delivery, folic acid (FA) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) were grafted onto compound 1 to yield the FA-Rh6G-1 complex. The HNSs fabricated with FA-Rh6G-1 showed low cytotoxicity against human embryonic kidney 293T cells and CT26 colon carcinoma cells and good doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity (9.6 wt %). The FA receptor-mediated endocytosis of FA-Rh6G-1 HNSs examined by using a confocal laser scanning microscope and a flow cytometer revealed that the uptake of FA-Rh6G-1 HNSs into CT26 cells was induced by FA receptor-mediated endocytosis. In vitro drug delivery tests showed that the DOX molecules were released from the resulting HNSs in a sustainable and pH-dependent manner, demonstrating a potential application for HNSs in targeted drug delivery for cancer therapy.
