Effective interactions, structure, and pressure in charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions: Critical assessment of charge renormalization methods

Charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions display a rich variety of microstructural and thermodynamic properties, which are determined by electro-steric interactions between all ionic species. The large size asymmetry between molecular-scale microions and colloidal macroions allows the microion degrees of freedom to be integrated out, leading to an effective one-component model of microion-dressed colloidal quasi-particles. For highly charged colloids with strong macroion-microion correlations, nonlinear effects can be incorporated into effective interactions by means of charge renormalization methods. Here, we compare and partially extend several practical mean-field methods of calculating renormalized colloidal interaction parameters, including effective charges and screening constants, as functions of concentration and ionic strength. Within the one-component description, we compute structural and thermodynamic properties from the effective interactions and assess the accuracy of the different methods by comparing predictions with elaborate primitive-model simulations [P. Linse, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 4359 (2000)]. We also compare various prescriptions for the osmotic pressure of suspensions in Donnan equilibrium with a salt ion reservoir and analyze instances where the macroion effective charge becomes larger than the bare one. The methods assessed include single-center cell, jellium, and multi-center mean-field theories. The strengths and weaknesses of the various methods are critically assessed, with the aim of guiding optimal and accurate implementations.

Theoretical description of the electrical double layer for a mixture of n ionic species with arbitrary size and charge asymmetries. I. Spherical geometry

In this work, we propose a theoretical finite element description of the ionic profiles of a general mixture of n species of spherical charged particles dissolved in an implicit solvent, with arbitrary size and charge asymmetries, neutralizing a spherical macroion. This approach aims to close the gap between the nano- and the micro-scales in macroion solutions, taking into account the ion correlations and ionic excluded volume effects consistently. When these last two features are neglected, the classical non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory for n ionic species-with different ionic closest approach distances to the colloidal surface-is recovered as a limit case. As a proof of concept, we study the electrical double layer of an electroneutral mixture of oppositely charged colloids and small microions, with an asymmetry 1:333 in size and 1:10 in valence, in salt-free and added salt environments. Our theoretical approach displays a good agreement regarding the ionic profiles, the integrated charge, and the mean electrostatic potential obtained from molecular dynamics simulations with explicit-sized microions. Although the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann colloid-colloid and colloid-microion profiles differ notably from those obtained via molecular dynamics simulations with explicit small-sized ions, the associated mean electrostatic potential agrees well with the corresponding explicit microion simulations.

The Colloidal Properties of Nanocellulose

Nanocelluloses are anisotropic nanoparticles of semicrystalline assemblies of glucan polymers. They have great potential as renewable building blocks in the materials platform of a more sustainable society. As a result, the research on nanocellulose has grown exponentially over the last decades. To fully utilize the properties of nanocelluloses, a fundamental understanding of their colloidal behavior is necessary. As elongated particles with dimensions in a critical nanosize range, their colloidal properties are complex, with several behaviors not covered by classical theories. In this comprehensive Review, we describe the most prominent colloidal behaviors of nanocellulose by combining experimental data and theoretical descriptions. We discuss the preparation and characterization of nanocellulose dispersions, how they form networks at low concentrations, how classical theories cannot describe their behavior, and how they interact with other colloids. We then show examples of how scientists can use this fundamental knowledge to control the assembly of nanocellulose into new materials with exceptional properties. We hope aspiring and established researchers will use this Review as a guide.

Universal linker-free assembly of core-satellite hetero-superstructures

Colloidal superstructures comprising hetero-building blocks often show unanticipated physical and chemical properties. Here, we present a universal assembly methodology to prepare hetero-superstructures. This straightforward methodology allows the assembly of building block materials varying from inorganic nanoparticles to living cells to form superstructures. No molecular linker is required to bind the building blocks together and thus the products do not contain any unwanted adscititious material. The Fourier transform infrared spectra, high resolution transmission electron microscopic images and nanoparticle adhesion force measurement results reveal that the key to self-organization is stripping surface ligands by adding non-polar solvents or neutralizing surface charge by adding salts, which allow us to tune the balance between van der Waals attraction and electrostatic repulsion in the colloid so as to trigger the assembling process. As a proof-of-concept, the superior photocatalytic activity and single-particle surface-enhanced Raman scattering of the corresponding superstructures are demonstrated. Our methodology greatly extends the scope of building blocks for superstructure assembly and enables scalable construction of colloidal multifunctional materials.

Reversible assembly of nanoparticles: theory, strategies and computational simulations

The significant advances in synthesis and functionalization have enabled the preparation of high-quality nanoparticles that have found a plethora of successful applications. The unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles can be manipulated through the control of size, shape, composition, and surface chemistry, but their technological application possibilities can be further expanded by exploiting the properties that emerge from their assembly. The ability to control the assembly of nanoparticles not only is required for many real technological applications, but allows the combination of the intrinsic properties of nanoparticles and opens the way to the exploitation of their complex interplay, giving access to collective properties. Significant advances and knowledge gained over the past few decades on nanoparticle assembly have made it possible to implement a growing number of strategies for reversible assembly of nanoparticles. In addition to being of interest for basic studies, such advances further broaden the range of applications and the possibility of developing innovative devices using nanoparticles. This review focuses on the reversible assembly of nanoparticles and includes the theoretical aspects related to the concept of reversibility, an up-to-date assessment of the experimental approaches applied to this field and the advanced computational schemes that offer key insights into the assembly mechanisms. We aim to provide readers with a comprehensive guide to address the challenges in assembling reversible nanoparticles and promote their applications.

Electric Potential of Citrate-Capped Gold Nanoparticles Is Affected by Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and Salt Concentration

The structure near polyelectrolyte-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is of significant interest because of the increased use of AuNPs in technological applications and the possibility that the acquisition of polyelectrolytes can lead to novel chemistry in downstream environments. We use all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to reveal the electric potential around citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (cit-AuNPs) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)-wrapped cit-AuNP (PAH-AuNP). We focus on the effects of the overall ionic strength and the shape of the electric potential. The ionic number distributions for both cit-AuNP and PAH-AuNP are calculated using MD simulations at varying salt concentrations (0, 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 M NaCl). The net charge distribution (Z(r)) around the nanoparticle is determined from the ionic number distribution observed in the simulations and allows for the calculation of the electric potential (ϕ(r)). We find that the magnitude of ϕ(r) decreases with increasing salt concentration and upon wrapping by PAH. Using a hydrodynamic radius (R_H) estimated from the literature and fits to the Debye-Hü̈ckel expression, we found and report the ζ potential for both cit-AuNP and PAH-AuNP at varying salt concentrations. For example, at 0.001 M NaCl, MD simulations suggest that ζ = -25.5 mV for cit-AuNP. Upon wrapping of cit-AuNP by one PAH chain, the resulting PAH-AuNP exhibits a reduced ζ potential (ζ = -8.6 mV). We also compare our MD simulation results for ϕ(r) to the classic Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) approximation and the well-known Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. We find agreement with the limiting regimes─with respect to surface charge, salt concentration and particle size─in which the assumptions of the PBE and DLVO theory are known to be satisfied.

Enhanced ordering in length-polydisperse carbon nanotube solutions at high concentrations as revealed by small angle X-ray scattering

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are stiff, all-carbon macromolecules with diameters as small as one nanometer and few microns long. Solutions of CNTs in chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) follow the phase behavior of rigid rod polymers interacting via a repulsive potential and display a liquid crystalline phase at sufficiently high concentration. Here, we show that small-angle X-ray scattering and polarized light microscopy data can be combined to characterize quantitatively the morphology of liquid crystalline phases formed in CNT solutions at concentrations from 3 to 6.5% by volume. We find that upon increasing their concentration, CNTs self-assemble into a liquid crystalline phase with a pleated texture and with a large inter-particle spacing that could be indicative of a transition to higher-order liquid crystalline phases. We explain how thermal undulations of CNTs can enhance their electrostatic repulsion and increase their effective diameter by an order of magnitude. By calculating the critical concentration, where the mean amplitude of undulation of an unconstrained rod becomes comparable to the rod spacing, we find that thermal undulations start to affect steric forces at concentrations as low as the isotropic cloud point in CNT solutions.

Photocatalytic Hedgehog Particles for High Ionic Strength Environments

High ionic strength environments can profoundly influence catalytic reactions involving charged species. However, control of selectivity and yield of heterogeneous catalytic reactions involving nano- and microscale colloids remains hypothetical because high ionic strength leads to aggregation of particle dispersions. Here we show that microscale hedgehog particles (HPs) with semiconductor nanoscale spikes display enhanced stability in solutions of monovalent/divalent salts in both aqueous and hydrophobic media. HPs enable tuning of photocatalytic reactions toward high-value products by adding concentrated inert salts to amplify local electrical fields in agreement with Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek theory. After optimization of HP geometry for a model photocatalytic reaction, we show that high salt conditions increase the yield of HP-facilitated photooxidation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol to benzaldehyde and 2-phenoxyacetophenone by 6 and 35 times, respectively. Depending on salinity, electrical fields at the HP-media interface increase from 1.7 × 10⁴ V/m to 8.5 × 10⁷ V/m, with high fields favoring products generated via intermediate cation radicals rather than neutral species. Electron transfer rates were modulated by varying the ionic strength, which affords a convenient and hardly used reaction pathway for engineering a multitude of redox reactions including those involved in the environmental remediation of briny and salty water.

Glycyrrhizin mediated liver-targeted alginate nanogels delivers quercetin to relieve acute liver failure

Acute liver failure is an uncommon and dramatic clinical syndrome with a high risk of mortality. Previous treatments existed some limitations of poor bioavailability and targeting the efficiency of drugs. In this study, a novel glycyrrhizin mediated liver-targeted alginate nanogels, which can deliver the antioxidant quercetin to the liver for the treatment of acute liver injury. In vitro radical scavenging results showed that the antioxidant activity of quercetin was increased 81-fold. The tissue distribution results indicated that glycyrrhizin-mediated nanogels showed stronger fluorescence intensity in the liver, which improved liver targeting and therapeutic efficacy. Quercetin-glycyrrhizin nanogels were more effective at restoring liver injury as indicated on serum markers, including alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and total bilirubin. The histopathology result showed that quercetin-glycyrrhizin nanogels reversed liver damage. Oxidative parameters of malondialdehyde and glutathione s-transferase were decreased, which provided supporting evidence of antioxidation. Moreover, quercetin-glycyrrhizin nanogels were more effective in down-regulating the inflammation-related gene expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase and monocyte chemotactic protein-1. In conclusion, the novel glycyrrhizin mediated liver-targeted alginate nanogels might be a promising treatment for acute liver failure.

Coating for preventing nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling in salty systems: Effect of the electrostatic and van der waals interactions

Development of anti-biofouling coating has attracted immense attention for reducing the massively detrimental effects of biofouling in systems ranging from ship hulls and surgical instruments to catheters, implants, and stents. In this paper, we propose a model to quantify the role of electrostatic and van der Waals (vdW) forces in dictating the efficacy of dielectric coating for preventing the nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling in salty systems. The model considers a generic charged lipid-bilayer encapsulated vesicle-like structure representing the bio-organism. Also, we consider the fouling caused by the nonspecific adhesion of the bio-organism on the substrate, without accounting for the explicit structures (e.g., pili, appendages) or conditions (e.g., surface adhesins secreted by the organisms) involved in the adhesion of specific microorganism. The model is tested by considering the properties of actual coating materials and biofouling causing microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, algae). Results show that while the electrostatic-vdW effect can be significant in anti-biofouling action for cases where the salt concentration is relatively low (e.g., saline solution for surgical instruments), it might not be effective for marine environment where the salt concentration is much higher. The findings, therefore, point to a hitherto unexplored driving mechanism of anti-biofouling action of the coating. Such an identification will also enable the appropriate choices of the coating materials (e.g., possible dielectric material with volume charge) and other system parameters (e.g., salinity of the solution for storing the surgical instruments) that will significantly improve the efficiency of the coatings in preventing the nonspecific adhesion mediated biofouling.

Transport of arsenic loaded by ferric humate colloid in saturated porous media

The transport behavior of arsenic (As(V)) loaded by ferric humate (HA-Fe) colloid, denoted as HA-Fe/As(V), moving in a saturated quartz sand column, was tested in the laboratory under varying pH values, ionic strengths, and HA and Fe(III) content. The time-fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) model was then employed to analyze the observed migration of HA-Fe/As(V). Results showed that the stability of the HA-Fe colloid exhibited an upward trend with an increasing pH and HA content. An increasing HA content led to a decrease in the particle size of the HA-Fe colloid. However, the effect of Fe(III) concentration on colloidal particle size exhibited the opposite phenomenon. The ability of the HA-Fe colloid to load As(V) gradually increased with the increase of the Fe(III) concentration. During the co-transport of the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid, transport of As(V) was promoted with increasing pH, increasing HA and Fe(III) content, and decreasing ionic strength in the saturated porous medium. The transport behavior of As(V) can be well fitted by the fADE model. The model analysis revealed that sub-diffusion of As(V) was weakened in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with high HA content. Sub-diffusion of As(V) in the low pH colloid was stronger than that of the high-pH colloid, and the molecular diffusion and mechanical dispersion were more weakened in the high-pH colloid than that of the low-pH colloid. When observing varying ionic strengths, As(V) exhibited stronger sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a higher ionic strength. As for the Fe(III) content, transport of As(V) was mainly affected by sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a low Fe(III) content. These findings provided direct and necessary insights into the effects of the HA-Fe colloid on the migration of As(V) throughout saturated porous media under different hydrochemical conditions found in natural environments.

Interactions of sub-five-nanometer diameter colloidal palladium nanoparticles in solution investigated via liquid cell transmission electron microscopy

Inter-particle interactions play important roles in controlling the structures, dispersion state and chemo-physical properties of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) in liquid media. In this work, we prepared palladium (Pd) NPs with an average diameter of ∼4.6 nm in situ inside the liquid cell, and investigated their coupled diffusion and aggregation behaviors through liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM). Via analyzing the interaction energies and forces, we derived the effective working range for repulsive double layer interaction experimentally, a value larger than two times the Debye length, suggesting a different interaction behavior of sub-5 nm NPs from that of colloidal NPs in larger sizes. Our results provide insights for the interactions between colloidal ultrafine nanoparticles in solution and will also shed light on the precisely controlled assembly of colloidal nanocrystals for practical applications.

Ion-Specific Assembly of Strong, Tough, and Stiff Biofibers

Designing engineering materials with high stiffness and high toughness is challenging as stiff materials tend to be brittle. Many biological materials realize this objective through multiscale (i.e., atomic- to macroscale) mechanisms that are extremely difficult to replicate in synthetic materials. Inspired from the architecture of such biological structures, we here present flow-assisted organization and assembly of renewable native cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), which yields highly anisotropic biofibers characterized by a unique combination of high strength (1010 MPa), high toughness (62 MJ m-3 ) and high stiffness (57 GPa). We observed that properties of the fibers are primarily governed by specific ion characteristics such as hydration enthalpy and polarizability. A fundamental facet of this study is thus to elucidate the role of specific anion binding following the Hofmeister series on the mechanical properties of wet fibrillar networks, and link this to the differences in properties of dry nanostructured fibers. This knowledge is useful for rational design of nanomaterials and is critical for validation of specific ion effect theories. The bioinspired assembly demonstrated here is relevant example for designing high-performance materials with absolute structural control.

Long-range forces and charge inversions in model charged colloidal dispersions at finite concentration

In charged colloidal dispersion systems the interest is in finding their stability conditions, phase transitions, and transport properties, either in bulk or confinement, among other physicochemical quantities, for which the knowledge of the dispersions' molecular structure and the associated macroion-macroion forces is crucial. To investigate these phenomena simple models have been proposed. Most of the theoretical and simulation studies on charged particles suspensions are at infinite dilution conditions. Hence, these studies have been focused on the electrolyte structure around one or two isolated central particle(s), where phenomena as charge reversal, charge inversion and surface charge amplification have been shown to be relevant. However, experimental studies at finite volume fraction exhibit interesting phenomenology which imply very long-range correlations. A simple, yet useful, model is the Colloidal Primitive Model, in which the colloidal dispersion is modeled as a mixture of size (and charge) asymmetrical hard spheres, at finite volume fraction. In this paper we review recent integral equations solutions for this model, where very long-range attractive-repulsive forces, as well as new long-range, giant charge inversions are reported. The calculated macroions radial distribution functions, charge distributions, and macroion-macroion forces are qualitatively consistent with existing experimental results, and Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations.

Effect of size and charge asymmetry on aggregation kinetics of oppositely charged nanoparticles

We report a theoretical and experimental study of the aggregation kinetics of oppositely charged nanoparticles. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are performed for symmetric, charge-asymmetric and size-asymmetric systems of oppositely charged nanoparticles. Simulation results show that both the weight and number average aggregate size kinetics exhibit power law scaling with different exponents for small and intermediate time of evolution. The qualitative behavior of the symmetric and the size asymmetric system are the same, but the charge asymmetric system shows anomalous behavior for intermediate to high particle concentrations. We also observe a strong dependence of power law exponents on the particle concentration. Radius of gyration of the cluster that indicates how nanoparticles inside a cluster are distributed around the center of mass of the cluster shows a non-monotonic time evolution with pronounced peak at higher particle concentration. The dependence of particle concentration on aggregation kinetics as observed by predictive numerical simulation is further verified experimentally by monitoring the time evolution of aggregate size of nanoparticles assemblies of Poly (methacrylic acid) (PMMA) nanoparticles functionalized with oppositely charged ligands. These size and charge tunable asymmetric polymeric nanoparticles were synthesized by modified miniemulsion technique. The integrated approach for studying nanoparticles aggregation as described here renders new insights into super structure formation and morphology optimization which can be potentially useful in the design of new materials, such as organic photovoltaics.

Quantifying the thickness of the electrical double layer neutralizing a planar electrode: the capacitive compactness

The spatial extension of the ionic cloud neutralizing a charged colloid or an electrode is usually characterized by the Debye length associated with the supporting charged fluid in the bulk. This spatial length arises naturally in the linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory of point charges, which is the cornerstone of the widely used Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek formalism describing the colloidal stability of electrified macroparticles. By definition, the Debye length is independent of important physical features of charged solutions such as the colloidal charge, electrostatic ion correlations, ionic excluded volume effects, or specific short-range interactions, just to mention a few. In order to include consistently these features to describe more accurately the thickness of the electrical double layer of an inhomogeneous charged fluid in planar geometry, we propose here the use of the capacitive compactness concept as a generalization of the compactness of the spherical electrical double layer around a small macroion (González-Tovar et al., J. Chem. Phys. 2004, 120, 9782). To exemplify the usefulness of the capacitive compactness to characterize strongly coupled charged fluids in external electric fields, we use integral equations theory and Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the electrical properties of a model molten salt near a planar electrode. In particular, we study the electrode's charge neutralization, and the maximum inversion of the net charge per unit area of the electrode-molten salt system as a function of the ionic concentration, and the electrode's charge. The behaviour of the associated capacitive compactness is interpreted in terms of the charge neutralization capacity of the highly correlated charged fluid, which evidences a shrinking/expansion of the electrical double layer at a microscopic level. The capacitive compactness and its first two derivatives are expressed in terms of experimentally measurable macroscopic properties such as the differential and integral capacity, the electrode's surface charge density, and the mean electrostatic potential at the electrode's surface.

Strong attractions and repulsions mediated by monovalent salts

Controlling interactions between proteins and nanoparticles in electrolyte solutions is crucial for advancing biological sciences and biotechnology. The assembly of charged nanoparticles (NPs) and proteins in aqueous solutions can be directed by modifying the salt concentration. High concentrations of monovalent salt can induce the solubilization or crystallization of NPs and proteins. By using a multiscale coarse-grained molecular dynamics approach, we show that, due to ionic correlations in the electrolyte, NPs pairs at high monovalent salt concentrations interact via remarkably strong long-range attractions or repulsions, which can be split into three regimes depending on the surface charge densities of the NPs. NPs with zero-to-low surface charge densities interact via a long-range attraction that is stronger and has a similar range to the depletion attraction induced by polymers with radius of gyrations comparable to the NP diameter. On the other hand, moderately charged NPs with smooth surfaces as well as DNA-functionalized NPs with no possibility of hybridization between them interact via a strong repulsion of range and strength larger than the repulsion predicted by models that neglect ionic correlations, including the Derjaguin-Landau-Vervey-Overbeek (DLVO) model. Interactions between strongly charged NPs (>2 e/nm²), both types smooth and DNA-functionalized NPs, show an attractive potential well at intermediate-to-high salt concentrations, which demonstrates that electrolytes can induce aggregation of strongly charged NPs. Our work provides an improved understanding of the role of ionic correlations in NP assembly and design rules to utilize the salting-out process to crystallize NPs.

The non-dominance of counterions in charge-asymmetric electrolytes: non-monotonic precedence of electrostatic screening and local inversion of the electric field by multivalent coions

The asymptotic convergence of the thermodynamic and structural properties of unequally-sized charge-symmetric ions in strong electric fields was postulated more than thirty years ago by Valleau and Torrie as the dominance of counterions via the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory [Valleau and Torrie, J. Chem. Phys., 1982, 76, 4623]. According to this mean field prescription, the properties of the electrical double layer near a highly charged electrode immersed in a size-asymmetric binary electrolyte converge to those of a size-symmetric electrolyte if the properties of counterions are the same in both instances. On the other hand, some of the present authors have shown that, in fact, counterions do not dominate the electrical properties of a spherical macroion in the presence of unequally-sized ions, symmetric in valence, if ion correlations and ionic excluded volume effects are taken into account consistently. These ingredients are neglected in the classical Poisson-Boltzmann picture. In the present work, we show the occurrence of the non-dominance of counterions in the opposite scenario, that is, when ions are equally-sized but asymmetric in valence. This is performed in the presence of highly charged colloidal surfaces of spherical and planar geometries for different ionic volume fractions. In addition to the phenomenon of non-dominance of counterions, our simulations and theoretical data also exhibit a non-monotonic order or precedence in the mean electrostatic potential, or electrostatic screening, at the Helmholtz plane of a charged colloid. This interesting behaviour is analyzed as a function of the coion's valence, the ionic volume fraction, and the charge and size of the colloidal particle. All these phenomena are explained in terms of the decay of the electric field near the colloidal surface, and by the appearance of a local inversion of both the electric field and the integrated surface charge density of the colloidal particle in the presence of monovalent counterions and multivalent coions.

Opposite counter-ion effects on condensed bundles of highly charged supramolecular nanotubes in water

Although ion specificity in aqueous solutions is well known, its manifestation in unconventional strong electrostatic interactions remains implicit. Herein, the ionic effects in dense packing of highly charged polyelectrolytes are investigated in supramolecular nanotube prototypes. Distinctive behaviors of the orthorhombic arrays composed of supramolecular nanotubes in various aqueous solutions were observed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), depending on the counter-ions' size and affiliation to the surface -COO(-) groups. Bigger tetra-alkyl ammonium (TAA(+)) cations weakly bonding to -COO(-) will compress the orthorhombic arrays, while expansion is induced by smaller alkaline metal (M(+)) ions with strong affiliation to -COO(-). Careful analysis of the changes in the SAXS peaks with different counter/co-ion combinations indicates dissimilar mechanisms underlying the two explicit types of ionic effects. The pH measurements are in line with the ion specificity by SAXS and reveal the strong electrostatic character of the system. It is proposed that the small distances between the charged surfaces, in addition to the selective adsorption of counter-ions by the surface charge, bring out the observed distinctive ionic effects. Our results manifest the diverse mechanisms and critical roles of counter-ion effects in strong electrostatic interactions.

The role of natural processes and surface energy of inhaled engineered nanoparticles on aggregation and corona formation

The surface chemistry of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) becomes more important as their size decreases and enters the nanometer-range. This review explains the fundamental properties of the surface chemistry of nanoparticles, and argues that their agglomeration and the formation of corona around them are natural processes that reduce surface energy. ENP agglomeration and surface corona formation are further discussed in the context of inhaled ENPs, as the lung is a major port of ENP entry to the body. The pulmonary surfactant layer, which the inhaled ENPs first encounter as they land on the lung surface, represents a unique environment with a variety of well-defined biomolecules. Many factors, such as hydrophobicity, surface charge of ENPs, protein/phospholipid concentrations of the alveolar lining fluid, etc. influence the complex processes of ENP agglomeration and corona formation in the alveolar lining fluid, and these events occur even before the ENPs reach the cells. We suggest that molecular dynamic simulations can represent a promising future direction for research of the behavior of inhaled ENPs, complementing the experimental approaches. Moreover, we want to remind biologists working on ENPs of the importance relationship between ENP surface energy and size.

Charge reversal at a planar boundary between two dielectrics

Despite the ubiquitous character and relevance of the electric double layer in the entire realm of interface and colloid science, very little is known of the effect that surface heterogeneity exerts on the underlying mechanisms of ion adsorption. Herein, computer simulations offer a perspective that, in sharp contrast to the homogeneously charged surface, discrete groups promote multivalent counterion binding, leading to charge reversal but possibly having not a sign change of the electrophoretic mobility. Counterintuitively, the introduction of dielectric images yields a significantly greater accumulation of counterions, which further facilitates the magnitude of charge reversal. The reported results are very sensitive to both the degree of ion hydration and the representation of surface charges. Our findings shed light on the mechanism for charge reversal over a broad range of coupling regimes operating the adsorption of counterions through surface group bridging attraction with their own images and provide opportunities for experimental studies and theoretical development.

Nonadditivity of nanoparticle interactions

Understanding interactions between inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is central to comprehension of self-organization processes and a wide spectrum of physical, chemical, and biological phenomena. However, quantitative description of the interparticle forces is complicated by many obstacles that are not present, or not as severe, for microsize particles (μPs). Here we analyze the sources of these difficulties and chart a course for future research. Such difficulties can be traced to the increased importance of discreteness and fluctuations around NPs (relative to μPs) and to multiscale collective effects. Although these problems can be partially overcome by modifying classical theories for colloidal interactions, such an approach fails to manage the nonadditivity of electrostatic, van der Waals, hydrophobic, and other interactions at the nanoscale. Several heuristic rules identified here can be helpful for discriminating between additive and nonadditive nanoscale systems. Further work on NP interactions would benefit from embracing NPs as strongly correlated reconfigurable systems with diverse physical elements and multiscale coupling processes, which will require new experimental and theoretical tools. Meanwhile, the similarity between the size of medium constituents and NPs makes atomic simulations of their interactions increasingly practical. Evolving experimental tools can stimulate improvement of existing force fields. New scientific opportunities for a better understanding of the electronic origin of classical interactions are converging at the scale of NPs.

Effective charges and virial pressure of concentrated macroion solutions

The stability of colloidal suspensions is crucial in a wide variety of processes, including the fabrication of photonic materials and scaffolds for biological assemblies. The ionic strength of the electrolyte that suspends charged colloids is widely used to control the physical properties of colloidal suspensions. The extensively used two-body Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) approach allows for a quantitative analysis of the effective electrostatic forces between colloidal particles. DLVO relates the ionic double layers, which enclose the particles, to their effective electrostatic repulsion. Nevertheless, the double layer is distorted at high macroion volume fractions. Therefore, DLVO cannot describe the many-body effects that arise in concentrated suspensions. We show that this problem can be largely resolved by identifying effective point charges for the macroions using cell theory. This extrapolated point charge (EPC) method assigns effective point charges in a consistent way, taking into account the excluded volume of highly charged macroions at any concentration, and thereby naturally accounting for high volume fractions in both salt-free and added-salt conditions. We provide an analytical expression for the effective pair potential and validate the EPC method by comparing molecular dynamics simulations of macroions and monovalent microions that interact via Coulombic potentials to simulations of macroions interacting via the derived EPC effective potential. The simulations reproduce the macroion-macroion spatial correlation and the virial pressure obtained with the EPC model. Our findings provide a route to relate the physical properties such as pressure in systems of screened Coulomb particles to experimental measurements.

Self-produced bubble-template synthesis of La2O3:Yb/Er@Au hollow spheres with markedly enhanced luminescence and release properties
