Abstract
Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (RAZIBs) with the merits of cost effectiveness and high safety have been rejuvenated as tantalizing energy storage systems to meet the demand for grid-scale applications. Currently, the energy storage capability of the positive electrode (cathode) holds the key for the overall performance of RAZIBs. In this work, we reveal VO2, V10O24·12H2O (HVO), and VO2/HVO can be prepared via hydrothermal reaction by using different reducing agents. VO2 exhibits high capacity of 237 mAh/g at 4 A/g, while it suffers from quick capacity decay with 48 % retention after 2000 charge/discharge cycles. On the contrary, HVO demonstrates moderate capacity but meritorious cycle stability (i.e., 173 mAh/g at 4 A/g and 82 % after 2000 cycles). By integrating the merits of high-capacity VO2 and high-stability HVO, the biphasic VO2/HVO sample exhibits promising electrochemical performance with high capacity (317 and 239 mAh/g at 1 and 4 A/g, respectively) and good cycle stability (80 % after 2000 cycles). As examined by band structure analysis, the superior electrochemical performance of VO2/HVO is attributed to the presence of a heterojunction between VO2 and HVO enabling a built-in electric field to boost electron transport kinetics, leading to high attainable capacity and reliable cycle performance in RAZIBs.

Abstract
Hydrogen has enormous commercial potential as a secondary energy source because of its high calorific value, clean combustion byproducts, and multiple production methods. Electrocatalytic water splitting is a viable alternative to the conventional methane steam reforming technique, as it operates under mild conditions, produces high-quality hydrogen, and has a sustainable production process that requires less energy. Electrocatalysts composed of precious metals like Pt, Au, Ru, and Ag are commonly used in the investigation of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, their limited availability and expensive cost restrict practical use. In contrast, electrocatalysts that do not contain precious metals are readily available, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and possess electrocatalytic performance equal to that of noble metals. However, considerable research effort must be devoted to create cost-effective and high-performing catalysts. This article provides a comprehensive examination of the reaction mechanism involved in electrocatalytic water splitting in both acidic and basic environments. Additionally, recent breakthroughs in catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions are also discussed. The structure-activity relationship of the catalyst was deep-going discussed, together with the prospects of current obstacles and potential for electrocatalytic water splitting, aiming at provide valuable perspectives for the advancement of economical and efficient electrocatalysts on an industrial scale.

Abstract
Semiconducting nanomaterials based heterogeneous photocatalysis represent a low-cost, versatile technique for environmental remediation, including pollution mitigation, energy management and other environmental aspects. Herein, we demonstrate the syntheses of various heterogeneous photocatalysts based on highly reduced graphene oxide (HRG) and vanadium oxide (VOx)-based nanocomposites (HRG-VOx). Different shapes (rod, sheet and urchin forms) of VOx nanoparticles were successfully fabricated on the surface of HRG under solvo-/hydrothermal conditions by varying the amount of water and ethanol. The high concentration of water in the mixture resulted in the formation of rod-shaped VOx nanoparticles, whereas increasing the amount of ethanol led to the production of VOx sheets. The solvothermal condition using pure ethanol as solvent produced VOx nano-urchins on the surface of HRG. The as-prepared hybrid materials were characterized using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, FTIR, SEM and TEM analyses. The photocatalytic activities of different HRG-VOx nanocomposites were investigated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The experimental data revealed that all HRG-VOx composite-based photocatalysts demonstrated excellent performance toward the photocatalytic degradation of the organic dyes. Among all photocatalysts studied, the HRG-VOx nanocomposite consisting of urchin-shaped VOx nanoparticles (HRG-VOx-U) demonstrated superior photocatalytic properties towards the degradation of dyes.

Abstract
Light-intensity selective superlinear photodetectors with ultralow dark current can provide an essential breakthrough for the development of high-performing near-sensor vision processing. However, the development of near-sensor vision processing is not only conceptually important for device operation (given that sensors naturally exhibit linear/sublinear responses), but also essential to get rid of the massive amount of data generated during object sensing and classification with noisy inputs. Therefore, achieving the giant superlinear photoresponse while maintaining the picoampere leakage current, irrespective of the measurement bias, is one of the most challenging tasks. Here, Mott material (vanadium dioxide) and silicon-based integrated infrared photodetectors are developed that show giant superlinear photoresponse (exponent >18) and ultralow dark current of 4.46 pA. Specifically, the device demonstrates an electro-opto-coupled insulator-to-metal transition, which leads to outstanding photocurrent on/off ratio (>106 ), a high responsivity (>1 mA W-1 ), and excellent detectivity (>1012 Jones), while maintaining response speed (τr = 6 µs and τf = 10 µs). Further, intensity-selective near-sensor processing is demonstrated and night vision pattern reorganization even with noisy inputs is exhibited. This research will pave the way for the creation of high-performance photodetectors with potential uses, such as in night vision, pattern recognition, and neuromorphic processing.

Abstract
The low temperature formation of monoclinic VO2crystal domains in nanocolumnar vanadium/oxygen thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering at oblique angles is analyzed. The synthesis procedure involved the deposition of amorphous nanocolumnar VO1.9thin films at room temperature and its subsequent annealing at temperatures between 250 °C and 330 °C in an oxygen atmosphere. The thermochromic transition of these films was found at a temperature of 47 °C when the annealing temperature was 270 °C and 58 °C when the annealing temperature was 280 °C and 290 °C, presenting a clear drop of the optical transmittance in the infrared region of the spectrum. The significant downshift in the temperature window to obtain VO2in comparison with compact films and other strategies in literature is explained by the particular morphology of the nanocolumnar structures, which contains numerous defects along with open and embedded porosity.

Abstract
It is critical to facilitate surface interaction for liquid-solid two-phase photocatalytic reactions. This study demonstrates more advanced, efficient, and rich molecular-level active sites to extend the performance of carbon nitride (CN). To achieve this, semi-isolated vanadium dioxide is obtained by controlling the growth of non-crystalline VO2 anchored into sixfold cavities of the CN lattice. As a proof-of-concept, the experimental and computational results solidly corroborate that this atomic-level design has potentially taken full advantage of two worlds. The photocatalyst comprises the highest dispersion of catalytic sites with the lowest aggregation, like single-atom catalysts. It also demonstrates accelerated charge transfer with the boosted electron-hole pairs, mimicking heterojunction photocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations show that single-site VO2 anchored into the sixfold cavities significantly elevates the Fermi level, compared with the typical heterojunction. The unique features of semi-isolated sites result in a high visible-light photocatalytic H2 production of 645 µmol h-1 g-1 with only 1 wt% Pt. They also represent an excellent photocatalytic degradation for rhodamine B as well as tetracycline, surpassing the activities obtained from many conventional heterojunctions. This study presents exciting opportunities for the design of new heterogeneous metal oxide for a variety of reactions.

Abstract
Initially, vanadium dioxide seems to be an ideal first-order phase transition case study due to its deceptively simple structure and composition, but upon closer inspection there are nuances to the driving mechanism of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) that are still unexplained. In this study, a local structure analysis across a bulk powder tungsten-substitution series is utilized to tease out the nuances of this first-order phase transition. A comparison of the average structure to the local structure using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and total scattering pair-distribution function methods, respectively, is discussed as well as comparison to bright field transmission electron microscopy imaging through a similar temperature-series as the local structure characterization. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure fitting of thin film data across the substitution-series is also presented and compared to bulk. Machine learning technique, non-negative matrix factorization, is applied to analyze the total scattering data. The bulk MIT is probed through magnetic susceptibility as well as differential scanning calorimetry. The findings indicate the local transition temperature ([Formula: see text]) is less than the average [Formula: see text] supporting the Peierls-Mott MIT mechanism, and demonstrate that in bulk powder and thin-films, increasing tungsten-substitution instigates local V-oxidation through the phase pathway VO[Formula: see text] V[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] V[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text].

Abstract
Molecular ferroelastics have received particular attention for potential applications in mechanical switches, shape memory, energy conversion, information processing, and solar cells, by taking advantages of their low-cost, light-weight, easy preparation, and mechanical flexibility. The unique structures of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been considered to be a design platform for symmetry-breaking-associated order-disorder in lattice, thereby possessing great potential for ferroelastic phase transition. Herein, we review the research progress of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite ferroelastics in recent years, focusing on the crystal structures, dimensions, phase transitions and ferroelastic properties. In view of the few reports on molecular-based hybrid ferroelastics, we look forward to the structural design strategies of molecular ferroelastic materials, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by molecular-based hybrid ferroelastic materials in the future. Abstract
Intelligent touch sensing is now becoming an essential part of various human-machine interactions and communication, including in touchpads, autonomous vehicles, and smart robotics. Usually, sensing of physical objects is enabled by applied force/pressure sensors; however, reported conventional tactile devices are not able to differentiate sharp and blunt objects, although sharp objects can cause unavoidable damage. Therefore, it is central issue to implement electronic devices that can classify sense of touch and simultaneously generate pain signals to avoid further potential damage from sharp objects. Here, concept of force-enabled nociceptive behavior is proposed and demonstrated using vanadium oxide-based artificial receptors. Specifically, versatile criteria of bio-nociceptor like threshold, relaxation, no adaptation, allodynia, and hyperalgesia behaviors are triggered by pointed force, but the device does not mimic any of these by the force applied by blunt objects; thus, the proposed device classifies the intent of touch. Further, supported by finite element simulation, the nanoscale dynamic is unambiguously revealed by conductive atomic force microscopy and results are attributed to the point force-triggered Mott transition, as also confirmed by temperature-dependent measurements. The reported features open a new avenue for developing mechano-nociceptors, which enable a high-level of artificial intelligence within the device to classify physical touch.

Afterwards, the physical properties of binary and ternary vanadium oxides in single and mixed valence states are described such as their structural, optical, and electronic properties. Finally, the use of these vanadium oxides in photochemical processes for environmental applications is detailed, especially for the production of hydrogen by water splitting and the degradation of organic pollutants in water using photocatalytic and photo-Fenton processes. The scientific aim of such a review is to bring a comprehensive tool to understand the photochemical processes triggered by vanadium oxide based materials where the photo-induced properties are thoroughly discussed based on the detailed description of their intrinsic properties.

Abstract
Randomly oriented vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanowires were produced on a glass substrate by spin coating from a cosolvent. SEM studies reveal that highly dense VO2 nanowires were grown at an annealing temperature of 400 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides evidence of the high crystallinity of the VO2 nanowires-embedded VO2 thin films on the glass substrate at 400 °C. Characterization by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) confirmed the formation of VO2 nanowires. The optical band gap of the nanowires-embedded VO2 thin films was also calculated from the transmittance data to be 2.65-2.70 eV. The growth mechanism of the solution-processed semiconducting VO2 nanowires was proposed based on both solvent selection and annealing temperature. Finally, the solar water splitting ability of the VO2 nanowires-embedded VO2 thin films was demonstrated in a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC).

Temperature effects on VO2 thin films deposited by RF sputtering for the degradation by photocatalysis of methylene blue and naproxen. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL REACTOR ENGINEERING 2020. Abstract
AbstractThe temperature effect on VO2 thin films synthesized by RF sputtering on their morphological, optical, electrical properties and their activity in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and naproxen was studied. Characterization results presented microcrystallinity for VO2 films treated at 50 and 100 °C. Nevertheless, the untreated films and films treated at 200 °C revealed characteristic peaks of monoclinic and tetragonal phases. SEM micrographs with elemental mapping of VO2 films showed granular morphology and a good oxygen dispersion along the film surface, possibly due to a restructuring on the film occasioned by particle coalescence and vanadium oxide island conformation. The electronic transmittance spectra showed the d–d transition characteristic for the square-pyramidal stereochemistry of vanadium (IV) ion, where the optical band interval was high for films treated at 50 °C. Raman spectroscopy results presented an increment in the V = O/V–O ratio as a function of temperature, probably related to superficial vanadium species formation. X-ray spectroscopy results showed the Onon-lattice/Olattice ratio values higher for films treated at 50 °C than the other films, related to an oxide character. The V 2p fit results presented V4+, V5+ regions and satellites for VO2 films thermal treated at 50 °C. The electrical resistivity on the VO2 films decreased as a function of temperature. Finally, the VO2 films thermal treated at 50 °C had higher photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methylene blue and naproxen compared to the other VO2 films, possibly associated with high electron mobility between the surface and the bulk, where the oxygen vacancies act as recombination sites for the e−/h+ pairs during photocatalytic degradation.

Abstract
Although Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has a potential application value for smart energy efficient windows because of its unique phase transition characteristic, there are still many obstacles that need to be overcome. One challenge is to reduce its high transition temperature (ζc = 68 °C) to near room temperature without causing its phase transition performance degradation. In this paper, a novel method was employed that covered a 3 nm ultra-thin heavy Cr-doped VO2 layer on the pure VO2 films. Compared with the as-grown pure VO2, obviously, phase transition temperature decreasing from 59.5 °C to 48.0 °C was observed. Different from previous doping techniques, almost no phase transition performance weakening occurred. Based on the microstructure and electrical parameters measurement results, the mechanism of ζc reducing was discussed. The upper ultra-thin heavy Cr-doped layer may act as the induced role of phase transition. With temperature increasing, carrier concentration increased from the upper heavy Cr-doped layer to the bottom pure VO2 layer by diffusion, and induced the carrier concentration reach to phase transition critical value from top to bottom gradually. The present method is not only a simpler technique, but also avoids expensive alloy targets.

Abstract
Nanostructured hydrated vanadium oxides (V2O5·nH2O) are actively being researched for applications in energy storage, catalysis, and gas sensors. Recently, a one-step exfoliation technique for fabricating V2O5·nH2O nanosheets in aqueous media was reported; however, the underlying mechanism of exfoliation has been challenging to study. Herein, we followed the synthesis of V2O5·nH2O nanosheets from the V2O5 and VO2 precursors in real time using solution- and solid-state 51V NMR. Solution-state 51V NMR showed that the aqueous solution contained mostly the decavanadate anion [H2V10O28]4- and the hydrated dioxovanadate cation [VO2·4H2O]+, and during the exfoliation process, decavanadate was formed, while the amount of [VO2·4H2O]+ remained constant. The conversion of the solid precursor V2O5, which was monitored with solid-state 51V NMR, was initiated when VO2 was in its monoclinic forms. The dried V2O5·nH2O nanosheets were weakly paramagnetic because of a minor content of isolated V4+. Its solid-state 51V signal was less than 20% of V2O5 and arose from diamagnetic V4+ or V5+.This study demonstrates the use of real-time NMR techniques as a powerful analysis tool for the exfoliation of bulk materials into nanosheets. A deeper understanding of this process will pave the way to tailor these important materials.

Abstract
V-containing mixed oxide catalytic materials are well known as active for partial oxidation reactions. Oxidation reactions are used in industrial chemistry and for the abatement of pollutants. An analysis of the literature in this field during the past few years shows a clear increase in the use of vanadium-based materials as catalysts for environmental applications. The present contribution makes a brief revision of the main applications of vanadium containing mixed oxides in environmental catalysis, analyzing the properties that present the catalysts with a better behavior that, in most cases, is related with the stabilization of reduced vanadium species (as V4+/V3+) during reaction.

Abstract
Hydrogen is readily obtained from renewable and non-renewable resources via water splitting by using thermal, electrical, photonic and biochemical energy. The major hydrogen production is generated from thermal energy through steam reforming/gasification of fossil fuel. As the commonly used non-renewable resources will be depleted in the long run, there is great demand to utilize renewable energy resources for hydrogen production. Most of the renewable resources may be used to produce electricity for driving water splitting while challenges remain to improve cost-effectiveness. As the most abundant energy resource, the direct conversion of solar energy to hydrogen is considered the most sustainable energy production method without causing pollutions to the environment. In overall, this review briefly summarizes thermolytic, electrolytic, photolytic and biolytic water splitting. It highlights photonic and electrical driven water splitting together with photovoltaic-integrated solar-driven water electrolysis.

Abstract
Herein, the controlled synthesis of 3D hierarchical films on carbon cloth (CC) in a high yield through a hydrothermal process and their high photocatalytic properties are reported. As representative examples, the obtained ZnIn2 S4 /CdIn2 S4 composites are composed of porous nanosheets. During the hydrothermal process, l-cysteine plays an important dual role as a coordinating agent and sulfur source, which is in favor of adjusting stoichiometry of the final product and forming the nanoporous structure. This facile method can be extended to synthesize other sulfides and oxides on CC substrates, such as CoIn2 S4 , MnIn2 S4 , FeIn2 S4 , SnS2 , and Bi2 WO6 . When evaluated the photocatalytic activity, the optimized ZnIn2 S4 /CdIn2 S4 (20%)-CC with an easily recycling feature shows higher photocatalytic degradation activity for methylene blue (MB) than ZnIn2 S4 -CC, CdIn2 S4 -CC, and ZnIn2 S4 /CdIn2 S4 (20%) powder. More importantly, ZnIn2 S4 /CdIn2 S4 (20%)-CC also exhibits superior H2 production activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the unique porous sheet-like structure and the formation of heterojunction. Our results could provide a promising way to develop high-performance photocatalytic films, which makes it possible to be used in real devices.

Abstract
VO2 (B) nanorods with average width ranging between 50-100 nm are synthesized via a hydrothermal method and the post hydrothermal treatment drying temperature is found to be influential in their overall phase and growth morphology evolution. The nanorods with unusually high optical bandgap for a VO2 material are effective in enhancing the thermal performance of ethylene glycol nanofluids over a wide temperature range as is indicated by the temperature dependent thermal conductivity measurements. Humidity and LPG sensors fabricated using the VO2 (B) nanorods bear testament to their efficient sensing performance, which can be partially attributed to the mesoporous nature of the nanorods.

Abstract
Photo-excitation of certain semiconductors can lead to the production of reactive oxygen species that can inactivate microorganisms. The mechanisms involved are reviewed, along with two important applications. The first is the use of photocatalysis to enhance the solar disinfection of water. It is estimated that 750 million people do not have accessed to an improved source for drinking and many more rely on sources that are not safe. If one can utilize photocatalysis to enhance the solar disinfection of water and provide an inexpensive, simple method of water disinfection, then it could help reduce the risk of waterborne disease. The second application is the use of photocatalytic coatings to combat healthcare associated infections. Two challenges are considered, i.e., the use of photocatalytic coatings to give “self-disinfecting” surfaces to reduce the risk of transmission of infection via environmental surfaces, and the use of photocatalytic coatings for the decontamination and disinfection of medical devices. In the final section, the development of novel photocatalytic materials for use in disinfection applications is reviewed, taking account of materials, developed for other photocatalytic applications, but which may be transferable for disinfection purposes.

Abstract
Experiencing a series of complicated changes, abundant orange crystals of novel metallic phase of vanadium pentoxide were obtained by a mild chemical method, the formula of which is defined as [V3(μ3-O)2⋅(μ1-OH)⋅O5]⋅H2O. Differ from the synthesis methods of vanadium oxide published, we have adopted a simple solution method that mixed starting materials are refluxing in the system of ethanol-water under a relatively lower temperature. Symmetry of the crystals is Monoclinic, with cell unit dimensions: a=4.9978(10)Å, b=8.4273(17)Å, c=7.8669(16)Å, β=96.44(3)° and space group of P2₁/m. The structure of the complex was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis spectroscopy and single-crystal diffraction analysis. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) was used to detect the purity of the crystals, and crystal morphology was detected by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, in order to extend application of oxidovanadium complexes, bromination catalytic activity about the complex in a single-pot reaction of the conversion of phenol red to bromophenol blue in a mixed solution of H2O-DMF at a constant temperature of 30±0.5 °C with a buffer solution of NaH2PO4Na2HPO4 (pH=5.8) was evaluated firstly, indicating that the complex can be considered as a potential functional model of bromoperoxidase, in the meantime, we have conducted the bromination catalytic reaction to simulate and measure the changes in reaction process indirectly. Besides, catalytic oxidation activity of the complex is also evaluated in the oxidation of cyclohexane (Cy) and cyclopentane with hydrogen peroxide promoted under mild conditions, showing potential catalytic activity of the complex by comparing TON (total turnover number) ratios of CyO/CyOH (CyO is the abbreviation of cyclohexanone and CyOH represents cyclohexanol) in the oxidation results.

Synthesis of V2O5 Nanoflakes on PET Fiber as Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysts for Degradation of RhB Dye. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2014. Abstract
The visible-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts are the current research focus techniques used to decompose organic pollutants/compounds. The photodegradation efficiency of organic compounds by photocatalyst is expected to be better compared to UV-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts technique since the major components of our solar energy are visible light (~44%). However, as most of the previous research work has been carried out using semiconductor photocatalysts in the form of powder, extra steps and costs are needed to remove this powder from the slurry to prevent secondary pollution. In this research work, we will explain our fabrication technique of V2O5 nanoflakes by growing radially on PET fibers. By utilizing the flexibility and high surface area of polymeric fibers as novel substrate for the growth of V2O5 nanoflakes, the Rhodamine B (RhB) could be degraded under visible light irradiation. The photodegradation of RhB solution by V2O5 nanoflakes followed the 1st order kinetic with a constant rate of 0.0065 min−1. The success of this research work indicates that V2O5 nanoflakes grown on PET fibre could be possibly used as organic waste water purifier under continuous flow condition. A photodegradation mechanism of V2O5 nanostructures to degrade RhB dye is proposed based on the energy diagram.

Abstract
Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution may provide one of the solutions to the shift to a sustainable energy society, but the quantum efficiency of the process still needs to be improved. Precise control of the composition and structure of the metal nanoparticle cocatalysts is essential, and we show that fine-tuning the Au-Pd nanoparticle structure modifies the electronic properties of the cocatalyst significantly. Specifically, Pd(shell)-Au(core) nanoparticles immobilized on TiO2 exhibit extremely high quantum efficiencies for H2 production using a wide range of alcohols, implying that chemical byproducts from the biorefinery industry can be used as feedstocks. In addition, the excellent recyclability of our photocatalyst material indicates a high potential in industrial applications. We demonstrate that this particular elemental segregation provides optimal positioning of the unoccupied d-orbital states, which results in an enhanced utilization of the photoexcited electrons in redox reactions. We consider that the enhanced activity observed on TiO2 is generic in nature and can be transferred to other narrow band gap semiconductor supports for visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract
The present study provides a rapid way to obtain VO2 (B) under economical and environmentally friendly conditions. VO2 (B) is one of the well-known polymorphs of vanadium dioxide and is a promising cathode material for aqueous lithium ion batteries. VO2 (B) was successfully synthesized by rapid single-step hydrothermal process using V2O5 and citric acid as precursors. The present study shows that phase-pure VO2 (B) polytype can be easily obtained at 180 °C for 2 h and 220 °C for 1 h, that is, the lowest combination of temperature and duration reported so far. The obtained VO2 (B) is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, we present an indirect way to obtain VO2 (M1) by annealing VO2 (B) under vacuum for 1 h.

Abstract
The synthesis of catalytically useful, ultrasmall oxide nanoparticles (NPs) of group 5 and 6 metals is not readily achievable through reported methods. In this work, we introduce a one-pot, two-precursor synthesis route to <2 nm MO(x) NPs in which a polyoxometalate salt is decomposed thermally in a high-boiling organic solvent oleylamine. The use of ammonium metatungstate resulted in oleylamine-coated, crystalline WO(x) NPs at consistently high yields of 92 ± 5%. The semicrystalline NPs contained 20-36 WO(x) structural units per particle, as determined from aberration-corrected high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, and an organic coating of 16-20 oleylamine molecules, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis. The NPs had a mean size of 1.6 ± 0.3 nm, as estimated from atomic force microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements. Carrying out the synthesis in the presence of organic oxidant trimethylamine N-oxide led to smaller WO(x) NPs (1.0 ± 0.4 nm), whereas the reductant 1,12-dodecanediol led to WO(x) nanorods (4 ± 1 nm × 20 ± 5 nm). These findings provide a new method to control the size and shape of transition metal oxide NPs, which will be especially useful in catalysis.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the application of photocatalysis to hydrogen production from organic substrates. This process, usually called photoreforming, makes use of semiconductors to promote redox reactions, namely, the oxidation of organic molecules and the reduction of H+ to H2. This may be an interesting and fully sustainable way to produce this interesting fuel, provided that materials efficiency becomes sufficient and solar light can be effectively harvested. After a first introduction to the key features of the photoreforming process, the attention will be directed to the needs for materials development correlated to the existing knowledge on reaction mechanisms. Examples are then given on the photoreforming of alcohols, the most studied topic, especially in the case of methanol and carbohydrates. Finally, some examples of more complex but more interesting substrates, such as waste solutions, are proposed.
