Abstract
Marine soft corals are known as a good source of biologically active compounds, among which a large number of steroid compounds are identified. Structures and activities of these compounds have been used in drug discovery and development. From 2015 to 2020, 179 new steroid compounds were isolated from soft corals and structurally characterized. In this review, we report the structural classification and bioactivities of these compounds. The largest group of steroids from soft corals are hydroxysteroids, while the most common biological activity is anticancer. Besides, anticancer hydroxysteroids from soft corals exhibit anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. Unlike anticancer and antibacterial activity that can be observed in a number of steroid classes, antioxidant activity and antileishmanial effect were observed only in 19-oxygenated steroids, antiviral activity in pregnane-type steroids and spirosteroids, immunosuppressive activity in epoxy- and epidioxysteroids, and antibacterial activity in two steroid classes, hydroxysteroids and ketosteroids. This systematically analyzed link between the structure and activity of natural marine steroids is a good starting point for future drug design.

Abstract
In this review, 170 natural substances, including steroid, diterpenoid, sesquiterpenoid, peptide, prostaglandin, base, chlorolipid, bicyclolactone, amide, piperazine, polyketide, glycerol, benzoic acid, glycyrrhetyl amino acid, hexitol, pentanoic acid, aminoethyl ester, octadecanone, alkaloid, and a 53-kD allergenic component from octocorals belonging to genus Dendronephthya, were listed. Some of these compounds displayed potential bioactivities.

Abstract
Worldwide cancer incidence and mortality have always been a concern to the community. The cancer mortality rate has generally declined over the years; however, there is still an increased mortality rate in poorer countries that receives considerable attention from healthcare professionals. This suggested the importance of the prompt detection, effective treatment, and prevention strategies. The genus Streptomyces has been documented as a prolific producer of biologically active secondary metabolites. Streptomycetes from mangrove environments attract researchers' attention due to their ability to synthesize diverse, interesting bioactive metabolites. The present review highlights research on mangrove-derived streptomycetes and the production of anticancer-related compounds from these microorganisms. Research studies conducted between 2008 and 2019, specifically mentioning the isolation of streptomycetes from mangrove areas and described the successful purification of compound(s) or generation of crude extracts with cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines, were compiled in this review. It is anticipated that there will be an increase in prospects for mangrove-derived streptomycetes as one of the natural resources for the isolation of chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract
The chemical examination of the marine soft coral Lemnalia sp., collected at the Xisha islands in the South China Sea, resulted in the isolation of four new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely clavukoellians G-J (1-4), and one new aristolane sesquiterpene, namely clavukoellian K (5), together with five known compounds, 6-10. The structure elucidation of the isolated natural products was based on various spectroscopic techniques including HRESIMS and NMR, while their absolute configurations were resolved on the basis of comparisons of the ECD spectra with the calculated ECD data. The isolated new compounds 1-5 were evaluated for their anti- and pro- angiogenesis activities in a transgenic fluorescent zebrafish (Tg(vegfr2:GFP)) model. Quantitative analysis revealed that compound 5 displayed pro-angiogenesis activity in a PTK787-induced vascular injury zebrafish model at 2.5 μM. Data showed that compound 5 significantly promoted the angiogenesis in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract
Six new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, clavukoellians A-F (1-6), together with one new neolemnane-type sesquiterpene, 4- O-deacetylparalemnolin D (7), were isolated from the marine soft coral Clavularia koellikeri. The structures of compounds 1-7 were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, ECD analysis, and quantum chemical calculation methods. Compounds 1 and 7 demonstrated significant antiangiogenic activities in wound healing assays on HUVECs.

Abstract
Four new steroids, named 7-dehydroerectasteroid F (1), 11α-acetoxyarmatinol A (2), 22,23-didehydroarmatinol A (3), and 3-O-acetylhyrtiosterol (4), together with 11 previously described analogues, were isolated from a South China Sea collection of the soft coral Dendronephthya gigantea. The structures of the new steroids were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with previously reported data. Compound 1 showed potent protection against H2O2-induced oxidative damage in neuron-like PC12 cells by promoting nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and enhancing the expression of HO-1. 1 represents the first steroid-type antioxidant from marine organisms.

Abstract
Two new 15-hydroxycembranoid diterpenes, 2β-hydroxy-7β,8α-epoxynephthenol (1) and 2β-hydroxy-11α,12β-epoxynephthenol (2), were isolated from extracts of the octocoral Nephthea columnaris along with a new natural cembrane, epoxynephthenol (3) and a known sterol, nephalsterol A (4). The structures of cembranes 1–3 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and comparison of the spectroscopic data with those of related analogues. The cytotoxicity of metabolites 1–4 against a panel of tumor cells is also described.

Abstract
Five new sesquiterpene lactones, racemosalactones A-E (1-5), along with 19 known sesquiterpene latones (6-24), were isolated from the roots of Inula racemosa. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configuration of 2 was deduced from X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 17 exhibited antiproliferative activities with IC50 values ranging from 0.38 to 4.19 μg/mL against human non-small-cell lung cancer A549, hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2, and human fibrosarcoma HT1080 cells. Compounds 6 and 8 exhibited antiproliferative activities against endothelial cells with IC50 values of 2.4 and 2.5 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, compounds 6 and 8 both inhibited endothelial cell tube formation at 1.0 μg/mL. A method for the rapid and straightforward preparative-scale isolation of compound 6 from alantolides is described.

This review encompasses the most relevant discoveries on steroid anticancer drugs and leads through the last decade and comprises 668 references.

Abstract
A new cytotoxic 19-oxygenated steroid, nebrosteroid Q (1) and two new cytotoxic 19-norergosterols, nebrosteroids R and S (2 and 3) were isolated from the soft coral Nephthea chabrolii collected at San-Hsian-Tai. The structures of nebrosteroids Q–S (1–3) were elucidated by spectral analysis, and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells as well as antiviral activity against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) were measured in vitro.

Abstract
The title compound, C(19)H(30)O(4), is an androstan-17-one derivative synthesized from the dehydro-epiandrosterone through a sequential addition of an oxidant, followed by a trans-diaxial opening of the epoxide generated, with Bi(OTf)(3) (OTf is trifluoro-methane-sulfonate). The six-membered rings have a slightly flattened chair conformation, while the five-membered ring adopts a 14-α envelope conformation. All rings are trans fused. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are connected by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, forming a three-dimensional network. A quantum mechanical ab initio Roothan Hartree-Fock calculation of the free mol-ecule gives bond lengths, valency angles and ring torsion angles of the free molecule at equilibrium geometry (energy minimum) close to the experimental values.

Abstract
Chemical investigations on the organic extract of the Formosan soft coral Nephthea erecta led to the isolation of two new eudesmanoids, (4R*,5S*,6Z,10R*)-8-oxo-eudesm-6-en-5alpha,11-diol (1) and (6E,10R)-4,5-dioxo-11-methoxy-eudesm-6-ene (2), together with one new tri-nor-eudesmane sesquiterpenoid, (4S*,5E,10R*)-7-oxo-tri-nor-eudesm-5-en-4beta-ol (3). The structures of metabolites 1-3 were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic analyses and by comparison with those reported in the literature. The anti-inflammatory activity using RAW 264.7 macrophages and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells of 1-3 were evaluated in vitro.

Abstract

Abstract
Three new oxygenated ergostanoids, 1-3, one known ergostanoid, 4, one new trinoreudesmadienone, 5, one new calamenene type sesquiterpene, 6, and one known aristolane-type sesquiterpene, (-)-aristolone (7), have been isolated from the AcOEt extract of the soft coral Nephthea erecta. The structures of these compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analysis, as well as Mosher's method. We revised the absolute configuration at C(23) in the side chain of some lanostanoids as a result of the Mosher's products of 1 (i.e., 1a and 1b). The cytotoxicities against selected cancer cells and the anti-inflammatory effects of these tested metabolites 1-7 were determined in vitro.

Abstract
Ten new sesquiterpenes, nardosinanols A-I ( 1- 9) and lemnafricanol ( 10), have been isolated from several Kenyan soft corals, i.e., from Lemnalia sp., Paralemnalia clavata, Lemnalia africana, and Rhytisma fulvum fulvum. The structures and relative stereochemistry of these compounds were elucidated by interpretation of MS, COSY ( (1)H- (1)H correlations), HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY NMR spectroscopic experiments and in the case of 5 also by chemical transformation to compounds 11 and 12. Nine compounds ( 1- 9) are based on the nardosinane skeleton ( 1- 6 are nardosinanes and 7- 9 nornardosinanes). Lemnafricanol ( 10) possesses a novel tricyclic skeleton. Compounds 3, 7, and 10 were found to be toxic to brine shrimp with LC 50 values of 4.0, 0.35, and 0.32 microM, respectively.

Abstract
Chemical investigations on the acetone and MeOH solubles of the soft coral Nephthea erecta have afforded five new sesquiterpenoids (1-5), one known sesquiterpene, kelsoene (6), and two known 19-oxygenated steroids (10 and 11). In addition, three unexpected artificial 19-oxygenated steroids (7-9) were obtained by letting 10 and 11 stand in CDCl(3) for prolonged periods of time. The structures of 1-9 were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells was measured in vitro.

Abstract
During 2003 and 2004, marine pharmacology research directed towards the discovery and development of novel anti-tumour agents was published in 163 peer-reviewed articles. The purpose of this review is to present a structured assessment of the anti-tumour and cytotoxic properties of 150 marine natural products, many of which are novel compounds that belong to diverse structural classes, including polyketides, terpenes, steroids and peptides. The organisms yielding these bioactive marine compounds include invertebrate animals, algae, fungi and bacteria. Anti-tumour pharmacological studies were conducted with 31 structurally defined marine natural products in a number of experimental and clinical models that further defined their mechanisms of action. Particularly potent in vitro cytotoxicity data generated with murine and human tumour cell lines was reported for 119 novel marine chemicals with as yet undetermined mechanisms of action. Noteworthy is the fact that marine anti-cancer research was sustained by a global collaborative effort, involving researchers from Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States of America (USA). Finally, this 2003-2004 overview of the marine pharmacology literature highlights the fact that the discovery of novel marine anti-tumour agents continued at the same pace as during 1998-2002.

Abstract
This review covers the literature published in 2004 for marine natural products, with 693 citations (491 for the period January to December 2004) referring to compounds isolated from marine microorganisms and phytoplankton, green algae, brown algae, red algae, sponges, coelenterates, bryozoans, molluscs, tunicates and echinoderms. The emphasis is on new compounds (716 for 2004), together with their relevant biological activities, source organisms and country of origin. Biosynthetic studies (8), and syntheses (80), including those that lead to the revision of structures or stereochemistries, have been included.
