Abstract
We have designed a new chiral receptor based on two salen zinc(ii) complex units connected with a spirobifluorene framework. The chiral receptor is proven to enantioselectively bind chiral carboxylate guests and the differences between the binding constants of enantiomeric guests were up to more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract
A great deal of research involving multidisciplinary approaches is currently dedicated to the understanding of brain function. The complexity of physiological processes that underlie neural activity is the greatest hurdle to faster advances. Among imaging techniques, MRI has great potential to enable mapping of neural events with excellent specificity, spatiotemporal resolution and unlimited tissue penetration depth. To this end, molecular imaging approaches using neurotransmitter-sensitive MRI agents have appeared recently to study neuronal activity, along with the first successful in vivo MRI studies. Here, we review the pioneering steps in the development of molecular MRI methods that could allow functional imaging of the brain by sensing the neurotransmitter activity directly. We provide a brief overview of other imaging and analytical methods to detect neurotransmitter activity, and describe the approaches to sense neurotransmitters by means of molecular MRI agents. Based on these initial steps, further progress in probe chemistry and the emergence of innovative imaging methods to directly monitor neurotransmitters can be envisaged.

Abstract
In this work, we present a quantum chemical study pertaining to some supramolecular complexes acting as wettability modifiers of oil-water-limestone system. The complexes studied are derived from zwitterionic liquids of the types N'-alkyl-bis, N-alquenil, N-cycloalkyl, N-amyl-bis-beta amino acid or salts acting as sparkling agents. We studied two molecules of zwitterionic liquids (ZL10 and ZL13), HOMO and LUMO levels, and the energy gap between them, were calculated, as well as the electron affinity (EA) and ionization potential (IP), chemical potential, chemical hardness, chemical electrophilicity index and selectivity descriptors such Fukui indices. In this work, electrochemical comparison was realized with cocamidopropyl betaine (CPB), which is a structure zwitterionic liquid type, nowadays widely applied in enhanced recovery processes.

Abstract
A new anthracene labeled pyridinium amide-urea conjugate 1 has been designed and synthesized. The receptor shows a different fluorometric response with L-N-acetylvaline and L-N-acetylalanine salts in CH₃CN in contrast to the other salts of L-N-acetyl α-amino acids and (S)-α-hydroxy acids studied. Upon complexation of the tetrabutylammonium salt of L-N-acetylvaline, the emission of 1 increases accompanied by the formation of a new band at higher wavelength and this characteristic change distinguishes it from other anionic substrates studied. The binding interaction has been studied by ¹H NMR, fluorescence and UV titration experiments.

Abstract
The synthesis, electrochemical, and optical properties of a new [3.3]ferrocenophane framework in which two ferrocene subunits, with similar electronic environments, are linked through two substituted guanidine moieties, are reported. The receptors 4-7 have been prepared in good yields by the reaction of bis(carbodiimide) 3 with primary amines. This architecture is exceptionally "tunable" because a variety of "legs" may be appended to the basic [3.3]ferrocenophane scaffold to give a wide range of signaling units. These receptors show remarkable ion-sensing properties, due to the presence of a redox active unit (ferrocene), and an amphoteric binding site (guanidine). In this nitrogen-rich structural motif the guanidine bridges act as multipoint binding sites for anions, cations, and amino acids. Sensing of anions takes place both by unprecedented redox-ratiometric measurements (F-, Cl-, AcO-, NO3-, HSO4-, H2PO4-, and HP2O7(3-)), and colorimetric change (F-, AcO-, H2PO4-, and HP2O7(3-)). Sensing and discrimination of amino acids takes place by redox-ratiometric measurements, whereas the recognition of metal cations (Zn2+, Ni2+, and Cd2+) is achieved either by electrochemical or fluorescence measurements. Moreover, the reported receptors display splitting of the oxidation wave of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couple, and form the mixed-valence species 4+* -7+* by electrochemical partial oxidation which, interestingly, show intervalence charge-transfer transitions associated to the appearance of absorption bands in the near infrared spectral region.

New ferrocene derivatives bearing two donor-acceptor systems are capable of selectively sensing cations and anions by cooperative binding of the two alpha,alpha'-groups bonded to the ferrocene nucleus, thus permitting the naked-eye selective colorimetric detection of copper[II] cation and acetate, benzoate, or cyanide anions, which are ions of toxicological and biological relevance.

Abstract
The direct HPLC enantiomeric separation of several ferrocenylalcohols on the commercially available Chiralcel OD and Chiralcel OJ columns has been evaluated in normal-phase mode. Almost all the compounds were resolved on one or both chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with separation factor (alpha) ranging from 1.06 to 2.88 while the resolution (R(s)) varied from 0.63 to 12.70 In the separation of the alpha-ferrocenylalcohols 1a-e and the phenyl analogues 2a-e, which were all resolved except 1c, a similar trend in the retention behavior for the two series of alcohols was evidenced and the selectivity was roughly complementary on the two investigated CSP. For three ferrocenylacohols, chosen as model compounds, the influence of the mobile phase composition and temperature on the enantioseparation were investigated and additional information on the chiral recognition mechanism were deduced from the chromatographic behavior of their acetylderivatives.

Abstract
The adsorption and solution behaviors of symmetrical tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, tetrapropyl-, and tetrabutylammonium bromides (TMAB, TEAB, TPAB, and TBAB, respectively) were studied at the air/water interface and in the bulk aqueous environments. Their salts were prepared by reacting tetraalkylammonium bromide (TAAB) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in a solution from which the products of the higher two homologues (tetrapropylammonium dodecyl sulfate (TPADS) and tetrabutylammonium dodecyl sulfate (TBADS)) could only be isolated as solids and for which detailed characterization has been performed. The interfacial behaviors of 1:1 molar mixtures of TAAB and SDS and the prepared TPADS and TBADS were examined. Micellization of the 1:1 mixtures along with the isolated species were studied in the presence and absence of NaBr salt. The energetics of the micellization process and the counterion binding of the micelles were evaluated. The interaction of the TAABs with SDS micelles was examined, and the results were evaluated in terms of single- and two-site binding interaction models. Of the formed tetraalkylammonium dodecyl sulfates (TAADSs), only TBADS evidenced clouding, which was investigated in detail along with 1:1 molar mixtures of TBAB and SDS in aqueous solution in the presence of additives such as NaBr, SDS, and TBAB. The solution behaviors of the TAADS and the clouding of TBADS have been rationalized in terms of a mixed micellar model.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The synthesis and properties of new conjugate molecules, Fc-PIA, composed of ferrocene (Fc) and pyrrole-imidazole polyamides (PIA) are reported. As a PIA sequence, we chose Im-Py-Im/Py-Im-Py considering its future application to the SNPs detection of genes having a GCG/CGC sequence. Two types of Fc-containing linkers, i.e., ferrocene-1,1'-dicarboxamide and ferrocenecarboxamide, were designed, and several Fc-PIPA molecules having these linkers were synthesized. Titration studies by use of circular dichroism revealed that the carboxamide-type Fc-PIA could bind to the target DNA with an association constant of 10(7) M(-1). In contrast, ferrocene dicarboxamide-type compounds have slightly weaker affinity for the target DNA. However, the affinity could be recovered by replacing one of the pyrrole residues with beta-alanine. We carried out the CV measurement and observed quasi-irreversible oxidation of the ferrocene moieties in the Fc-PIA compounds. These properties of Fc-PIA indicate the potential usefulness of these molecules in electrochemical detection of genes.

Abstract
The novel ferrocene-based ditopic receptor 1 was synthesized. This receptor bears two oligoethylene glycol arms with pendant 2,2'-bipyridine unit at the identical cyclopentadienyl rings, Cu(I) cation binds to 1 to form the 1 : 1 complex (1.Cu(I)) with the cavity consisting of polyether, and the resulting complex acts as a receptor for amino acid ester salts to give the ditopic complex (1.Cu(I).AAOMe-HCl). The 1H NMR spectrum of 1.Cu(I).LeuOMe-HCl exhibits strong broadening at the bipyridine region, and the ESR spectrum of the same sample gives the signals assigned as Cu(II) species. With these data, the binding of 1.Cu(I) towards AAOMe.HCl leads to the conformational change, and the Cu(I) complex is simultaneously oxidized to the Cu(II) complex.
