Abstract
The C2-symmetric photochromic molecule 3, containing dithienylethene (DTE) and ferrocene units connected by an alkyne bridge, represents a unique probe where a metal (Hg2+) binds with the central DTE moiety. Both photoisomerized states of 3 (open, 3o; closed, 3c) are found to interact with Hg2+ ion by the S atoms of the DTE core; however, the binding constants (from a UV-vis study) and DFT calculations suggest that the open isomer (3o) binds with the metal ion more strongly than that of the closed isomer (3c). Notably, the course of metal binding does not perturb the inherent photoisomerization properties of the DTE core and the photoswitchability persists even in the metal-coordinated form of 3, however, with a comparatively slower rate. The quantum yields for photocyclization (Φo→c) and photocycloreversion (Φc→o) in the free form are 0.56 and 0.007, respectively, whereas the photocyclization quantum yield in the Hg2+ complexed species is 0.068, 8.2 times lower than the photocyclization quantum yield (Φo→c) of free 3o. Thus, the rate of photoisomerization can be modulated by a suitable metal coordination to the DTE core. The dynamics of photoswitchability in the metal-coordinated form of DTE has been explored by experimental means (UV-vis and electrochemical studies) as well as quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Polytopic ligands have become ubiquitous in coordination chemistry because they grant access to a variety of mono- and polynuclear complexes of transition metals as well as rare-earth and main-group elements. Nitrogen-based ditopic ligands, in which two monoanionic N,N-binding sites are framed within one molecule, are of particular importance and are therefore the primary focus of this review. In detail, bis(amidine)s, bis(guanidine)s, bis(β-diimine)s, bis(aminotroponimine)s, bis(pyrrolimine)s, and miscellaneous bis(N,N-chelating) ligands are reviewed. In addition to the general synthetic protocols, the application of these ligands is discussed along with their coordination chemistry, the multifarious binding modes, and the ability of these ligands to bridge two (or more) metal(loids).

Abstract
A new bis-heteroleptic RuII complex (1[PF6]2) with iodotriazole as the anion binding group along with the attached pyrene moiety is developed to investigate anion sensing properties and the origin of its selectivity toward a particular class of anions. Selective sensing of phosphates over other anions in both the solution and solid states by 1[PF6]2 is clearly evident from the perturbation of the absorption band and a large degree of amplification of 3MLCT emission band in the presence of phosphates. Importantly, macroscopic investigation such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) indicated the formation of supramolecular architecture in the presence of dihydrogen phosphate via halogen bonding interaction and π-π stacking of pyrene moieties. Such macroscopic property is further corroborated by solution and solid state spectroscopic studies, e.g., 1H-DOSY NMR, single crystal X-ray crystallography, and solid state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.

Abstract
The ligand 2,6-bis[(N-phenyl)amido]-4-methylphenol (receptor 1) and its copper(II) complex (receptor 2) having amide moiety have been designed and synthesized for selective sensing of anions. The anion recognition behavior of the receptor 1 and its copper complex (receptor 2) has been studied in acetonitrile. Quenching of fluorescence was observed for both receptors in presence of HSO4(-) anion whereas other physiologically and environmentally important anions such as F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), CN(-), OAc(-), HCO₃(-), H₂PO₄(-), NO₃(-), NO₂(-) and SO₄(2-) show fluorescence enhancement behavior. The sensing protocol has been studied both spectrophotometrically as well as spectrofluorometrically. Fluorescence quenching is suggested to proceed via both dynamic and static processes.

Abstract
Diverse ab initio and density-functional-theory methods were used to investigate geometries, energies, and electronic absorption spectra of guanidine and its protonated form, as well as their photo-deactivation processes. It was shown that the guanidine is a weakly absorbing species with the excitation spectrum consisting mostly of transitions to the Rydberg excited states and one valence n-π4 state. The lowest energy band has a maximum at ca. 6.9 eV (∼180 nm). The protonation of guanidine affects its excitation spectrum substantially. A major shift of the Rydberg states to higher energies is clearly visible and strongly absorbing transitions from the ground state to the π3-π4 and π2-π4 states appears at 7.8 eV (∼160 nm). Three low-lying conical intersections (two for guanidine and one for protonated guanidine) between the ground state and the first excited singlet state were located. They are accessible from the Franck-Condon region through amino N-H stretching and out-of-plane deformations in guanidine and protonated guanidine, respectively. The relaxation of the π3-3s Rydberg state via amino N-H bond stretching was hindered by a barrier. The nondissociated conical intersection in protonated guanidine mediates the radiationless deactivation of the compound after excitation into the π3-π4 state. This fact is detrimental for the photostability of guanidine, since its conjugate acid is stable in aqueous solution over a wide pH range and in protein environment, where guanidinium moiety in arginine is expected to be in a protonated form.

Abstract
[m.n] Multinuclear ferrocenophanes prepared by aza-Wittig reaction of bisiminophosphoranes derived from 1,1′-diazidoferrocene and isophthaladelhyde or 2,5-diformylthiophene, behave as efficient electrochemical and chromogenic chemosensor molecules for Zn2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ metal cations. Whereas the OSWV of receptor 3, bearing two m-phenylene units in the bridges, display one oxidation peak, receptor 4 incorporating two thiophene rings in the bridges, exhibits two well-separated oxidation peaks. In both receptors only the addition of Zn2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ metal cations induced a remarkable anodic shift of ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. Likewise, in the absorption spectra of these receptors the low energy band is red-shifted by Δλ = 165 − 209 nm, and these changes promoted a significant color changes which could be used for the naked eye detection of these metal cations. The coordination modes for two representative cases were unveiled by DFT calculations that show an unsual coordination in the [42Pb]2+ complex with the Pb2+ cation in a distorted cubic N4S4 donor cage.

Abstract
Indolin-2-one (oxindole), (I), undergoes a Knoevenagel condensation with ferrocene-1,1'-dicarbaldehyde, (II), to afford the title complex 3,3'-[(E,E)-ferrocene-1,1'-diyldimethylidyne]diindolin-2-one dichloromethane disolvate, [Fe(C(28)H(20)N(2)O(2))]·2CH(2)Cl(2), (IV). The structure of (IV) contains two ferrocene complex molecules in the asymmetric unit and displays, as expected, intermolecular hydrogen bonding (N-H···O=C) between the indolin-2-one units. Intermolecular π-π stacking interactions are also observed.

Abstract
Mixed-ligand monometallic and bimetallic ruthenium(II) complexes of compositions [(bpy)(2)Ru(H(3)Imbzim)](ClO(4))(2) x 2 H(2)O (1) and [(bpy)(2)Ru(H(2)Imbzim)Ru(bpy)(2)](ClO(4))(3) x CH(2)Cl(2) (2), where H(3)Imbzim = 4,5-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)imidazole and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, have been synthesized and characterized using standard analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The X-ray crystal structures of both compounds have been determined and showed that 1 crystallized in the triclinic form with space group P1 and 2 is in the monoclinic form with space group P2(1)/m. The anion binding properties of complexes 1 and 2, as well as those of the parent H(3)Imbzim, were thoroughly investigated in an acetonitrile solution using absorption, emission, and (1)H NMR spectral studies, which revealed that both of the metalloreceptors act as sensors for F(-), for AcO(-), and, to some extent, for H(2)PO(4)(-). At a relatively lower concentration of anions, a 1:1 hydrogen-bonded adduct was formed; however, in the presence of an excess of anions, stepwise deprotonation of the two benzimidazole NH fragments occurred, an event that was signaled by the development of vivid colors visible with the naked eye. Double deprotonation was also observed in the presence of hydroxide. Less basic anions (AcO(-) and H(2)PO(4)(-)) induce deprotonation of only one NH. The effect of solvents on the absorption and emission spectral behavior has also been studied in detail. The binding affinities of different anions toward the receptors were evaluated and showed that the binding constants of 1 and 2 are substantially enhanced relative to free H(3)Imbzim because upon coordination to the Ru(II) center(s), H(3)Imbzim/H(2)Imbzim(-) becomes electron-deficient, thereby rendering the imidazole NH protons more available for hydrogen bonding to the anions. Cyclic voltammetry studies carried out in acetonitrile provided evidence of an anion-dependent electrochemical response with F(-) and AcO(-). Anion-induced lifetime shortening makes complex 2 a suitable lifetime-based sensor for anions.
