Abstract
The tandem gold(I)-catalyzed rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of enynyl acetates in which the double bond is embedded in a piperidine ring was computationally and experimentally studied. The theoretical calculations predict that the position of the propargylic acetate substituent has a great impact on the reactivity. In contrast to our previous successful cyclization of the 2-substituted substrates, where the nitrogen favors the formation of the cyclized final product, the substitution at position 3 was computed to have a deleterious effect on the electronic properties of the molecules, increasing the activation barriers of the Nazarov reaction. The sluggish reactivity of 3-substituted piperidines predicted by the calculations was further confirmed by the results obtained with some designed substrates.

Abstract
A cobalt-catalyzed cross-coupling between 3- and 4-iodopiperidines and Grignard reagents is disclosed. The reaction is an efficient, cheap, chemoselective, and flexible way to functionalize piperidines. This coupling was used as the key step to realize a short synthesis of (±)-preclamol. Some mechanistic investigations were conducted that highlight the formation of radical intermediates.

Abstract
The cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN)-catalyzed, three-component reaction between primary amines, β-dicarbonyl compounds, and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in ethanol heated to reflux, constitutes a general, one-pot synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines. Their reduction with sodium triacetoxyborohydride furnished piperidine derivatives bearing up to five substituents with full diastereoselectivity in a hitherto inaccessible stereochemical arrangement. The reaction proceeded with no significant loss of enantiomeric purity under mild reduction conditions that are compatible with several functional groups that are normally sensitive to reduction. Octahydroquinolin-5-one derivatives, which were prepared by a modified version of the initial multicomponent reaction, were not suitable substrates for the sodium triacetoxyborohydride mediated reduction, but they were transformed into the corresponding decahydroquinolines, including a precursor of the amphibian alkaloid pumiliotoxin C, by catalytic hydrogenation under a variety of conditions.

Abstract
A practical and highly stereoselective approach to access 2,6-disubstituted piperidines using an amidine auxiliary is reported. These were reduced to the saturated piperidine rings with high diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
The highly enantioselective catalytic asymmetric addition of aryl and alkenylboronic acids to N-benzylnicotinate salt 1 is described. The dihydropyridine 2 reaction products can be converted to synthetically useful piperidines. Application of the methodology to the preparation of enantioenriched quaternary chiral centers is also discussed.

Abstract
Stereoselective syntheses of L-pipecolic acid and (2S,3S)-3-hydroxypipecolic acid were achieved from a chiral N-imino-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydropyridine intermediate. The 3-hydroxy substituent of the latter amino acid was introduced by hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of singlet oxygen with the 1,2-dihydropyridine.

Abstract
C-H bond activation has been extensively studied with (Cp*)M(L)n (M = Ir, Rh), but cobalt, the third member of this triad, has not previously been shown to activate sp3 C-H bonds. Further, practical functionalization of the metal alkyl products of oxidative addition has not been fully explored. Toward these ends, we have developed catalytic dehydrogenation of alkyl amines with a Co(I) catalyst. Amine substrates are protected with vinyl silanes, followed by catalytic transfer hydrogenation, to yield a broad range of stable protected enamines and 1,2-diheteroatom-substituted alkenes, including several unprecedented heterocycles. (Cp*)Co(VTMS)2 catalyzes transfer hydrogenation under surprisingly mild conditions with high chemo-, regio-, and diastereoselectivity, while tolerating additional functionality.
