Abstract
Thermotropic ionic liquid crystals have remained a relatively little studied group of materials despite their many potential applications as anisotropic ionic liquids and charge (ion and electron/hole) transporting materials. Particularly rare are core charged discotic liquid crystals because their synthesis is usually more involved, and their molecular design is less established. Presented here is a straightforward and versatile synthetic approach to imidazolium annulated triphenylene derivatives. Their neutral imidazole precursors are not liquid crystalline while the imidazolium salts display hexagonal discotic columnar mesophases over a wide range of temperatures and as low as 47 °C. Computational studies at the DFT and PM6 levels of theory confirmed much higher stacking energies for the imidazolium salts compared to the neutral imidazole precursors. They also predicted the anions of columnar stacks of imidazolium salts to be positioned in the bay-positions next to the imidazolium unit and in-plane with the polyaromatic system. The anions were stabilized in the bay position by multiple interactions with partially positively charged H atoms and do not interfere with π-π stacking.

Abstract
π-Extended pyrene compounds possess remarkable luminescent and semiconducting properties and are being intensively investigated as electroluminescent materials for potential uses in organic light-emitting diodes, transistors, and solar cells. Here, the synthesis of two sets of pyrene-containing π-conjugated polyaromatic regioisomers, namely 2,3,10,11,14,15,20,21-octaalkyloxypentabenzo[a,c,m,o,rst]pentaphene (BBPn) and 2,3,6,7,13,14,17,18-octaalkyloxydibenzo[j,tuv]phenanthro [9,10-b]picene (DBPn), is reported. They were obtained using the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling in tandem with Scholl oxidative cyclodehydrogenation reactions from the easily accessible precursors 1,8- and 1,6-dibromopyrene, respectively. Both sets of compounds, equipped with eight peripheral aliphatic chains, self-assemble into a single hexagonal columnar mesophase, with one short-chain BBPn homolog also exhibiting another columnar mesophase at a lower temperature, with a rectangular symmetry; BBPn isomers also possess wider mesophase ranges and higher mesophases' stability than their DBPn homologs. These polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons all show a strong tendency of face-on orientation on the substrate and could be controlled to edge-on alignment through mechanical shearing of interest for their implementation in photoelectronic devices. In addition, both series BBPn and DBPn display green-yellow luminescence, with high fluorescence quantum yields, around 30%. In particular, BBPn exhibit a blue shift phenomenon in both absorption and emission with respect to their DBPn isomers. DFT results were in good agreement with the optical properties and with the stability ranges of the mesophases by confirming the higher divergence from the flatness of DBPn compared with BBPn. Based on these interesting properties, these isomers could be potentially applied not only in the field of fluorescent dyes but also in the field of organic photoelectric semiconductor materials as electron transport materials.

Abstract
Highly photostable supramolecular photosensitizing 'lighted metal-free' assemblies of DPZ-Th have been developed which show strong absorption in the visible region and excellent electron transportation potential from donor to acceptor units. The as-prepared assemblies of DPZ-Th activate aerial oxygen to generate Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) under visible-light irradiation in mixed aqueous media. Owing to these properties, the as-prepared DPZ-Th assemblies exhibit high photocatalytic activity in catalyzing the aerobic oxidative coupling of benzylamines and synthesis of quinazolines. Various spectroscopic studies support the participation of Type I reactive species in the reaction mechanism. The 'pure' oxygen environment was not needed for carrying out these transformations and all the reactions proceed very well under aerial conditions to furnish the desired products in high yields.

Abstract
Quinoxaline derivatives with different molecular structures stabilizing liquid crystalline self-assembly are discussed in this review. This class of molecules can be systematically modified with careful molecular engineering to achieve different molecular shapes, directing them to self-assemble into various types of mesophases. The structure-property relationships of such molecules and the resultant self-assembled functional structures are of utmost importance in organic electronic devices and related applications.

Abstract
The properties of organic dyes depend as much on their intermolecular interactions as on their molecular structure. While it is generally predictable what supramolecular structure would be ideal for a specific application, the generation of specific supramolecular structures by molecular design and suitable processing methods remains to be a challenge. A versatile approach to different supramolecular structures has been the application of mesomorphism in conjunction with alignment techniques and self-assembly at interfaces. Reviewed here is the columnar mesomorphism of board-shaped dyes perylene, indigo, isoindigo, diketopyrrolopyrrole, and quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine. They generate a larger number of different supramolecular structures than conventional disc-shaped (discotic) mesogens because of their non-circular shape and directional intermolecular interactions. The mesomorphism of all but the perylene derivatives is systematically and comprehensively covered for the first time.

Abstract
Diketopyrrolopyrrole and isoindigo are commercially important dyes that have recently found broad application as electron acceptor and light-absorbing groups in organic semiconductors. Their self-assembly into specific supramolecular structures to control optoelectronic properties has been hampered by limited options for substitution and their high propensity for crystallization. Reported here is a molecular design that directs self-assembly into previously elusive columnar mesophases of π-π stacking cores. Although attachment of bis(trisoctyloxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine groups to both ends of diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene and isoindigo cores generated mesomorphic dyes of similar overall shapes and dimensions, distinct differences in their mesomorphism and optoelectronic properties were observed.

Abstract
A series of new tetrakis(dialkoxyphenyl) dicyanotetraoxapentacene derivatives (1 a-c) were prepared by reaction of the appropriate terphenyl diols with tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile in good yields. Compounds 1 b and 1 c, which bear hexyloxy and decyloxy side chains, exhibited columnar hexagonal mesophases, as shown by polarized optical microscopy, variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of methoxy-substituted 1 a revealed that the dicyanotetraoxapentacene core is highly planar, consistent with the notion that these molecules are able to stack in columnar mesophases. A detailed photophysical characterization showed that these compounds exhibit aggregation-induced emission in solution, emission in nonpolar solvents, weak emission in polar solvents, and strong emission in the solid state both as powder and in thin films. These observations are consistent with a weakly emissive charge-transfer state in polar solvents and a more highly emissive locally excited state in nonpolar solvents.

Abstract
Self-assembled supramolecular structures formed by disc-shaped molecules, commonly known as discotic liquid crystals (DLCs), have attracted tremendous interest during the past decade due to their potential applications in wide-viewing liquid crystal displays, sensors, photovoltaic solar cells, light emitting diodes, thin film transistors, etc. Since the discovery, only about sixty different core molecules have been explored to prepare about 3500 DLCs. We have realised a new heterocyclic aromatic molecular motif, s-heptazine, which functions as a core fragment for the synthesis of discotic liquid crystals on appropriate functionalization.

Abstract
We synthesized thiophene-functionalized pyrene, peropyrene, and teropyrene through a two- or four-fold alkyne annulation reaction promoted by triflic acid. All of the target compounds were fully characterized spectroscopically, and the structure of the peropyrene analogue was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A significant red shift in the absorption and emission properties as a function of extended conjugation was observed by UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. This alkyne annulation strategy is a useful method for the conversion of smaller polycyclic aromatics to larger ones, such as nanographenes.

π-Extended thiadiazoloquinoxaline (TQ) derivatives 1a,b-3a,b, in which a tetraalkoxyphenanthrene moiety is annulated with the TQ core and benzene rings are incorporated via the ethynylene spacer, were synthesized. They display absorption bands reaching into 750 nm and possess the electron-affinity comparable to [60]fullerene. The CF3- and OMe-substituents on the benzene rings have moderate effects on modulation of the HOMO and LUMO levels. Tetraalkoxyphenanthrene-fused TQs 1a,b-3a,b aggregate in the solid state and assemble in solution through π-π stacking interactions. The self-assembly of 1a,b-3a,b into 1D superstructures was confirmed, and the difference in the alkoxy groups and the solvents for self-assembly proved to change their morphology. Comparison of the properties of 1a and those of reference compounds 4 and 5 clarified the effects of both the fusion of the phenanthrene moiety and the introduction of ethynylene spacers on the properties.

Abstract
The design of a relatively simple and efficient method to extend the π-conjugation of readily available aromatics in one-dimension is of significant value. In this paper, pyrenes, peropyrenes, and teropyrenes were synthesized through a double or quadruple benzannulation reaction of alkynes promoted by Brønsted acid. This novel method does not involve cyclodehydrogenation (oxidative aryl-aryl coupling) to arrive at the newly incorporated large arene moieties. All of the target compounds were synthesized in moderate to good yields and were fully characterized with the structures unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. As expected, photophysical characterization clearly shows increasing red-shifts as a function of extended conjugation within the fused ring systems.

Abstract
AbstractA series of 2-[(9H-fluoren-2-yl)aryl]-1H-benzo[d]imidazoles 11–13 and 2,7-bis[(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)aryl]-9H-fluorenes 14–16 containing different linking aromatic units were synthesized in good yields. Their absorption and fluorescence properties were investigated in solution and in the solid state. Most compounds possess good fluorescence-emitting ability with φFL values in the region of 0.31–0.99 in solution and display strong blue emission. Structure–optical behavior characteristics and further details of the electronic properties from cyclic voltammetry measurements and theoretical calculations are discussed.

Abstract
A series of pyrene-fused azaacenes with four and six linearly fused rings that possess LUMO levels between -3.7 and -4.3 eV is reported. These LUMO values are remarkably lower than those typically observed for pyrene-fused azaacenes, even for systems with sixteen linearly fused rings, and are comparable to those observed for state-of-the-art n-azaacenes.
