Tuning the Emission Properties of 2,1,3-Benzothiadiazoles via Regioselective Substitution

The 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit is a prominent building block commonly used in various research areas such as optoelectronics and bioimaging. Despite its great versatility, the development of strategies to elaborate BTD has been largely neglected, including exploring its reactivity and understanding how regioselective functionalization can be used to tune the fluorescence emission. Previous focus has primarily been on C4- or C4,C7-substitutions. Here, a series of unsymmetrical mono - and disubstituted BTDs was synthesized and characterized for their photophysical properties. The reaction scope includes all six possible substituent patterns on the BTD benzoid ring (C4-, C5-, C4,C5-, C4,C6-, C4,C7- and C5,C6-substitution), which comprise arrangements that previously been synthetically challenging to access. By introducing a methoxy and/or a phenyl group we demonstrate that the emissive behavior of BTD derivatives strongly depends on the position of the substituent (s). We show that regioselective substitution on BTD can engender long-lived fluorescence and circumvent strong fluorescence quenching in polar protic solvents, which is a limitation of many previously described BTD derivatives.

4,9- and 4,10-Substituted pyrenes: synthesis, successful isolation, and optoelectronic properties

We report herein a way to prepare and purify optoelectronic functional 4,9- and 4,10-substituted pyrene isomers. By tuning the size of substituents, the designed 4,9- and 4,10-isomers can be successfully isolated by recycling preparative size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and/or repeated recrystallization. The structure and purity of the isolated compounds 1-5 have been confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of compounds 1-5 have been studied in detail both experimentally and theoretically. The lowest transitions of these pyrenes, 1-5, are allowed, with moderate to high fluorescence quantum yields and radiative decay rates around 108 s-1. The differences between the electrochemical and photophysical properties of 4,9-, 4,10-, 1,6-, and 2,7-substituted isomers are compared and concluded.

2- and 2,7-Substituted para-N-Methylpyridinium Pyrenes: Syntheses, Molecular and Electronic Structures, Photophysical, Electrochemical, and Spectroelectrochemical Properties and Binding to Double-Stranded (ds) DNA

Two N-methylpyridinium compounds and analogous N-protonated salts of 2- and 2,7-substituted 4-pyridyl-pyrene compounds were synthesised and their crystal structures, photophysical properties both in solution and in the solid state, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties were studied. Upon methylation or protonation, the emission maxima are significantly bathochromically shifted compared to the neutral compounds, although the absorption maxima remain almost unchanged. As a result, the cationic compounds show very large apparent Stokes shifts of up to 7200 cm-1 . The N-methylpyridinium compounds have a single reduction at ca. -1.5 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in MeCN. While the reduction process was reversible for the 2,7-disubstituted compound, it was irreversible for the mono-substituted one. Experimental findings are complemented by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Furthermore, the N-methylpyridinium compounds show strong interactions with calf thymus (ct)-DNA, presumably by intercalation, which paves the way for further applications of these multi-functional compounds as potential DNA-bioactive agents.

The hetero-Friedel-Crafts-Bradsher Cyclizations with Formation of Ring Carbon-Heteroatom (P, S) Bonds, Leading to Organic Functional Materials

The interest in functional materials possessing improved properties led to development of new methods of their synthesis, which allowed to obtain new molecular arrangements with carbon and heteroatom motifs. Two of the classical reactions of versatile use are the Friedel-Crafts and the Bradsher reactions, which in the new heteroatomic versions allow to replace ring carbon atoms by heteroatoms. In the present work, we review methods of synthesis of C-S and C-P bonds utilizing thia- and phospha-Friedel-Crafts-Bradsher cyclizations. Single examples of C-As and lack of C-Se bond formation, involving two of the closest neighbors of P and S in the periodic table, have also been noted. Applications of the obtained π-conjugated molecules, mainly as semiconducting materials, flame retardants, and resins hardeners, designed on the basis of five- and six-membered cyclic molecules containing ring phosphorus and sulfur atoms, are also included. This comprehensive review covers literature up to August 2020.

O-Annulation to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Tale of Optoelectronic Properties from Five- to Seven-Membered Rings

We take advantage of the Pummerer oxidative annulation reaction to extend PAHs through the formation of an intramolecular C-O bond with a suitable phenol substituent. Depending on the peripheral topology of the PAH precursor (e.g., pyrene, boron-dipyrromethene, or perylene diimide) five-, six-, and seven-membered O-containing rings could be obtained. The effect of the O-annulations on the optoelectronic properties were studied by various methods with the pyrano-annulated pyrene and BODIPY derivatives depicting quantitative emission quantum yields.

Sulfhydryl-Directed Iridium-Catalyzed C-H/Diazo Coupling and Tandem Annulation of Naphthalene-1-thiols

The first sulfhydryl-directed iridium-catalyzed C-H/diazo coupling and tandem annulation of naphthalene-1-thiols has been developed. The framework of naphtho[1,8-bc]thiopyrans was constructed in a one-step reaction with good yields. This transformation provides a practical synthetic route for the widely used naphtho[1,8-bc]thiopyran derivatives.

Synthesis and Configurational Character Study of Novel Structural Isomers Based on Pyrene-Imidazole

Isomers provide more possibilities for the structure of organic compounds. Molecular structures determine their corresponding properties, therefore the intrinsic relationship between structure and properties of isomers is of great research value. Isomers with a stable structure and excellent performance possess more potential for development and application. In this paper, we design and synthesize structural isomers with different molecular symmetries based on the asymmetric structure of imidazole and the symmetrical structure of pyrene. Isomers with stable molecular structures can be obtained by a simple and efficient “one-pot” reaction, involving axisymmetric configuration and centrosymmetric configuration. Using this “click-like” reaction, the structure of target molecules is controllable and adjustable. Furthermore, the effect of molecular configurations on molecular stacking of crystal is studied. The variation of the optical and thermal properties, the optimized structures, and orbital distributions of isomers depends on different molecular geometry with different symmetry, which are revealed by crystallographic analysis. This present strategy provides an efficient synthetic method for the design and synthesis of structural isomers based on pyrene–imidazole.

Diagonally π-Extended Perylene-Based Bis(heteroacene) for Chiroptical Activity and Integrating Luminescence with Carrier-Transporting Capability

We report the synthesis and characterization of a novel bis(heteroacene), in which four benzothiophene units diagonally fused to a twisted perylene and spatially arranged in a double helical-like structure. The described compound yielded chiroptically active atropisomers with a perfect CD response and furthermore circularly polarized luminescence with a g_lum of ∼1.09 × 10^-3. The racemate showed strong photoluminescence both in solution (Φ _f = 68%) and at the solid state (Φ _f = 57%) and, meanwhile, possessed the charge-carrier transport property with a hole mobility (μ_h) up to 0.02 cm² V^-1 s^-1 by the thin-film based OFET measurements. The integrated optoelectronic features are primarily associated with the specifically finetuned perylene-based π-extended structure.

The opposite and amplifying effect of B ← N coordination on photophysical properties of regioisomers with an unsymmetrical backbone

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of pyrido[2,1-a]isoindole with internal alkynes functionalized by a BMes2ph and an N-aromatic heterocycle leads to the formation of two types of regioisomers (major a and minor b) that have distinct physical and photophysical properties. Examination on 5 pairs of regioisomers unveils that the major isomers consistently have a smaller optical energy gap and emission energy than the corresponding minor isomers, which is greatly amplified by the formation of an internal B ← N bond. The regioisomers with a B ← N bond display contrasting temperature-dependent structural dynamics and response to fluoride ions, owing to an entropy-driven or fluoride initiated B ← N bond rupture/ring-opening process and the different B ← N bond strength. The opposite inductive effect and the Lewis pair properties of the dichotomic substituent units are responsible for the contrasting properties of the regioisomers in this system.

Synthesis, Optical, and Redox Properties of Regioisomeric Benzoheterocycles-Fused Pyrene

A new synthetic route toward the synthesis of benzo[b]phospholes- and benzo[b]siloles-fused pyrenes using a transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond activation is described. The compounds were fully characterized including X-ray diffraction. A combined experimental and theoretical study shows that both the heteroatom and the substitution pattern impact the optical and redox properties.

Alkylation of the K-Region in a Sterically Hindered Pyrene Carboxamide via Directed Reaction with Alkyllithiums under Air

Sterically hindered N,2,7-tri- tert-butylpyrene-1-carboxamide treated with n-BuLi, i-BuLi, s-BuLi, and n-HexLi in THF in the presence of TMEDA and air afforded trans- N,2,7-tri- tert-butylpyrene-10-alkyl-9-hydroxy-9,10-dihydropyrene-1-carboxamides in 63-74% yield. Trifluoroacetic acid promoted dehydration of these compounds gave 10-alkyl derivatives of the starting amide in 79-89% yield. The minor products of this reaction were deamidated compounds, 4-alkyl-2,7-di- tert-butylpyrenes.

Synthesis, structures and photophysical properties of two regioisomeric phenalenocarbazoles

Two regioisomeric phenalenocarbazoles have been synthesized by direct reductive cyclization of 2'-Nitrophenyl-pyrene isomers respectively. Their photophysical properties and crystal structures as well as CV properties were investigated and compared with those of sulfur containing analogues. Although the fluorescence emission properties of 1N are very similar with those of 2N, the HOMO energy level of 1N is 0.16eV higher than that of 2N indicating that 1N has better electron donating ability.

A Pd-catalyzed optional approach for the synthesis of dibenzothiophenes

A direct and practical approach for the construction of DBTs was developed via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction, in which commercially available o-bromo-iodobenzenes combined with benzene thiols or iodobenzenes combined with o-bromo-benzene thiols were applied. These two approaches will provide an alternative for the synthesis of DBT derivatives.

Aromatic metamorphosis: conversion of an aromatic skeleton into a different ring system

Aromatic skeletons are generally regarded as being uncleavable because of their aromatic stabilization energy. Compared to exocyclic functionalizations of aromatic compounds, much less attention has been paid to substitutions of endocyclic atoms in aromatic cores through partial disassembly of the cyclic skeletons and subsequent ring reconstruction. In this Feature Article, we describe our endeavours to establish "aromatic metamorphosis", where general aromatic compounds such as dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans, and benzofurans are transformed into different ring systems using a multi-step strategy or ideally in one step.

Novel Fluorophores based on Regioselective Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Acylation of the Pyrene Ring Using Triflic Acid

The extension of the pyrene ring from dimethyl 2,2'-(pyrene-1,6-diyl)dibenzoate derivatives by an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation can be realized in an efficient and regioselective manner using triflic acid as proton source. Naphtho-tetracenone derivatives are obtained in high yields at room temperature while Bis-tetracene-diones are prepared upon heating. Both products display interesting fluorescence properties in the visible range with quantum yields varying from 50 to 60 %.

Pyrene Molecular Orbital Shuffle-Controlling Excited State and Redox Properties by Changing the Nature of the Frontier Orbitals

We show that by judicious choice of substituents at the 2- and 7-positions of pyrene, the frontier orbital order of pyrene can be modified, giving enhanced control over the nature and properties of the photoexcited states and the redox potentials. Specifically, we introduced a julolidine-like moiety and Bmes₂ (mes=2,4,6-Me₃ C₆ H₂ ) as very strong donor (D) and acceptor (A), respectively, giving 2,7-D-π-D- and unsymmetric 2,7-D-π-A-pyrene derivatives, in which the donor destabilizes the HOMO-1 and the acceptor stabilizes the LUMO+1 of the pyrene core. Consequently, for 2,7-substituted pyrene derivatives, unusual properties are obtained. For example, very large bathochromic shifts were observed for all of our compounds, and unprecedented green light emission occurs for the D/D system. In addition, very high radiative rate constants in solution and in the solid state were recorded for the D-π-D- and D-π-A-substituted compounds. All compounds show reversible one-electron oxidations, and Jul₂ Pyr exhibits a second oxidation, with the largest potential splitting (ΔE=440 mV) thus far reported for 2,7-substituted pyrenes. Spectroelectrochemical measurements confirm an unexpectedly strong coupling between the 2,7-substituents in our pyrene derivatives.

Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds: Synthetic Routes, Properties, and Applications

Two-dimensionally extended, polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules (heterocyclic nanographenes) are a highly versatile class of organic materials, applicable as functional chromophores and organic semiconductors. In this Review, we discuss the rich chemistry of large heteroaromatics, focusing on their synthesis, electronic properties, and applications in materials science. This Review summarizes the historical development and current state of the art in this rapidly expanding field of research, which has become one of the key exploration areas of modern heterocyclic chemistry.

Charge Transfer Through Dithieno[2,3-a:3',2'-c]phenazine: Effect of Substitution Pattern on the Optoelectronic Properties of Regioisomeric Luminophores

Two series of regioisomeric luminophores that contained a dithieno[2,3-a:3',2'-c]phenazine (DTP) unit as an electron acceptor have been designed and synthesized. To investigate the effect of substitution pattern on the optoelectronic properties of these luminophores, electron donors (N,N-dihexylaniline or N,N-dihexyl-4-vinylaniline) were incorporated at the 2,5-, 8,11-, and 9,10-positions of the DTP unit. We found that the optoelectronic properties of the regioisomeric luminophores were greatly affected by the substitution pattern: functionalization at the 8,11-positions of the DTP unit was superior to the other two substitution patterns in extending the effective π-conjugation and strengthening the intramolecular charge-transfer interactions. Moreover, the insertion of vinyl groups between the DTP and N,N-dihexylaniline units narrowed the energy band-gap for isomers 4 and 5. However, hypsochromically shifted absorption and photoluminescence maxima were observed for isomeric luminophore 6, in which electron donors were substituted at the 2,5-positions of the DTP unit. These results should facilitate greater understanding of the structure-property relationships in regioisomeric semiconductors and present a new way to design optoelectronic materials with effective substitution patterns.

Synthesis and Properties of Benzothieno[b]-Fused BODIPY Dyes

Two benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY, in which one parent BODIPY core is fused with one and two benzothieno rings, respectively, were synthesized from BODIPYs substituted with 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenyl at the β-position. The first H2SO4-induced cyclization and deborylation afforded benzothieno[b]-fused dipyrrin derivatives, which can easily complex with BF3·OEt2 to form the desired benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs. It was revealed that the fusion of the benzothieno ring is more effective at extending conjugation than simple attachment of the 2-(methylthio)phenyl substituent, which presumably results from conformational restriction. Compared with the corresponding unstrained SPh-BODIPY and BSPh-BODIPY, which contain one and two 2-(methylthio)phenyl groups at the β-position, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY display red shifted absorption, increased absorptivity, and fluorescence efficiency. Furthermore, the ring fusion is also helpful to increase stability of the formed cation in BBT-BODIPY. Thus, BBT-BODIPY exhibits very intriguing properties, such as intense absorption and emission in the red region, very sharp emission spectra, and reversible oxidation and reduction potentials.

1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-Tetrasubstituted Asymmetric Pyrene Derivatives with Electron Donors and Acceptors: High Photostability and Regioisomer-Specific Photophysical Properties

The systematic synthesis of five 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-tetrasubstituted asymmetric pyrenes with electron donor and acceptor moieties is presented, together with an examination of their photophysical properties. Pyrene derivative PA1, containing one formyl and three piperidyl groups, showed bright solvatochromic fluorescence from green (λem = 557 nm, ΦFL = 0.94 in hexane) to red (λem = 648 nm, ΦFL = 0.50 in methanol), suggesting potential applications for PA1 as an environmentally responsive probe. Although the synthesis of simple 1- and 3-disubstituted pyrene derivatives is considered difficult, PA13, with two formyl groups at the 1- and 3-positions and two piperidyl groups at the 6- and 8-positions, could be synthesized successfully. PA13 exhibited less pronounced solvatochromism, but displayed a narrow fluorescent band with high ΦFL in all solvents (ΦFL > 0.75). Moreover, its absorption band displayed an exceptional bathochromic shift compared to the other derivatives (e.g., λabs = 480 and 522 nm in ethanol for PA1 and PA13, respectively), suggesting that such modifications of pyrene may be quite important for the modulation of its energy gap. Additionally, all compounds exhibited exceptionally high photostability, which highlights the advantage of these new dyes and provides new insights on the design of photostable fluorophores.
