Abstract
Due to the serious ecological problems caused by the high CO2 content in the atmosphere, reducing atmospheric CO2 has attracted widespread attention from academia and governments. Among the many ways to mitigate CO2 concentration, the capture and comprehensive utilization of CO2 through chemical methods have obvious advantages, whose key is to develop suitable adsorbents and catalysts. Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are known to bind CO2 through the interaction between unquenched Lewis acid sites/Lewis base sites with the O/C of CO2, simultaneously achieving CO2 capture and activation, which render FLP better potential for CO2 utilization. However, how to construct efficient FLP targeted for CO2 utilization and the mechanism of CO2 activation have not been systematically reported. This review firstly provides a comprehensive summary of the recent advances in the field of CO2 capture, activation, and transformation with the help of FLP, including the construction of homogeneous and heterogeneous FLPs, their interaction with CO2, reaction activity, and mechanism study. We also illustrated the challenges and opportunities faced in this field to shed light on the prospective research.

Abstract
We demonstrate the catalytic role of aluminum and boron centers in aluminum borohydride [(2-Me2CH2C6H4)(C6H5)Al(μ-H)2B(C6H5)2] (6) during carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrosilylation. Preliminary investigations into CO2 reduction using [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)(H)Al(μ-H)]2 (1) and [Ph3C][B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)4] (2) in the presence of Et3SiH and PhSiH3 resulted in CH2(OSiR3)2 and CH3OSiR3, which serve as formaldehyde and methanol surrogates, respectively. In pursuit of identifying the active catalytic species, three compounds, B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)3 (3), [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)(3,5-C6H3Cl2)Al(μ-H)2B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)2] (4), and [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)2Al(THF)][B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)4] (5), were isolated. Among compounds 2-5, the highest catalytic conversion was achieved by 4. Further, 4 and 6 were prepared in a straightforward method by treating 1 with 3 and BPh3, respectively. 6 was found to be in equilibrium with 1 and BPh3, thus making the catalytic process of 6 more efficient than that of 4. Computational investigations inferred that CO2 reduction occurs across the Al-H bond, while Si-H activation occurs through a concerted mechanism involving an in situ generated aluminum formate species and BPh3.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of β-diketiminate-supported aluminium complexes bearing terminal alkoxide and mono-thiol functional groups: LAlOMe(Et) (2), LAlOtBu(Et) (3), and LAlSH(Et) (4), (L=[HC{C(Me)N-(2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )}2 ]). Complexes 2 and 3 are further used as synthons to generate the fascinating cationic aluminium alkoxide complexes, [LAlOMe(μ-OMe)-Al(Et)L][EtB(C6 F5 )3 ] (5), [LAlOMe(OEt2 )][EtB(C6 F5 )3 ] (6), and [LAlOtBu(OEt2 )][EtB(C6 F5 )3 ] (8). These electrophilic cationic species are well characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic techniques. The assessment of Lewis acidity by the Gutmann-Beckett method revealed superior Lewis acidity of the cations substituted with electron-demanding alkoxy groups in comparison to the known methyl analogue [LAlMe][B(C6 F5 )4 ]. This has been further endorsed by computational calculations to determine the NBO charges and hydride ion affinity for complexes 6 and 8. These complexes are also capable of activating triethylsilane in stoichiometric reactions. The applicability of these complexes has been realized in the hydrosilylation of ethers, carbonyls, and olefines. Additionally, the solid-state structure of a new THF stabilized aluminium halide cation [LAlCl(THF)][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (11) has also been reported.

Abstract
Catalytic CO2 reduction with phenylsilane under solvent-free conditions was linked with the one-pot synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrans from β-dicarbonyl compounds and styrenes. The synthesis includes three processes: (1) bis(silyl)acetal formation from CO2 and phenylsilane and a domino reaction of (2) Knoevenagel condensation and (3) inverse-electron-demand oxa-Diels-Alder reaction. The first process was catalyzed by a pentanuclear ZnII complex (0.07 mol %) to generate bis(silyl)acetals, which were hydrolyzed into formaldehyde to be used in the second step.

Abstract
In this work, the molecular aluminium dihydride complex bearing an N, N'-chelated conjugated bis-guanidinate (CBG) ligand is used as a catalyst for reducing a wide range of aryl and alkyl esters with good tolerance of alkene (C=C), alkyne (C≡C), halides (Cl, Br, I and F), nitrile (C≡N), and nitro (NO2 ) functionalities. Further, we investigated the catalytic application of aluminium dihydride in the C-O bond cleavage of alkyl and aryl epoxides into corresponding branched Markovnikov ring-opening products. In addition, the chemoselective intermolecular reduction of esters over other reducible functional groups, such as amides and alkenes, has been established. Intermediates are isolated and characterized by NMR and HRMS studies, which confirm the probable catalytic cycles for the hydroboration of esters and epoxides.

Abstract
The sequestering and complete conversion of SO2 to valuable chemicals in a metal-free pathway is highly demanded. The recent success of SO2 fixation by N-heterocyclic carbenes instigated further studies in this regard. Previous reports were confined within the carbene-SO2 reaction mechanism and the stability of oxathiirane S-oxide derivatives. The complete conversion of captured SO2 to precious chemicals was not studied. The present inquisition has accomplished the scarcity of the earlier studies. It is observed that in the presence of an excess amount of carbene, the registered SO2 is converted to the ketone derivative and thiocarbonyl S-oxide derivative. An electronic level investigation of these reactions is carried out. From the change of the molecular orbitals along the reaction path, it is concluded that the reaction between the oxathiirane S-oxide derivative and carbene follows a frog's hunting mechanism.

Abstract
In this Perspective we discuss the ability of transition metal complexes to activate and cleave the Si–H and B–H bonds of hydrosilanes and hydroboranes (tri- and tetra-coordinated) in an electrophilic manner, avoiding the need for the metal centre to undergo two-electron processes (oxidative addition/reductive elimination). A formal polarization of E–H bonds (E = Si, B) upon their coordination to the metal centre to form σ-EH complexes (with coordination modes η1 or η2) favors this type of bond activation that can lead to reactivities involving the formation of transient silylium and borenium/boronium cations similar to those proposed in silylation and borylation processes catalysed by boron and aluminium Lewis acids. We compare the reactivity of transition metal complexes and boron/aluminium Lewis acids through a series of catalytic reactions in which pieces of evidence suggest mechanisms involving electrophilic reaction pathways. In this Perspective we compare the ability of transition metals and p-block Lewis acids to activate electrophilically hydrosilanes and hydroboranes. The mechanistic similarities and dissimilarities in different catalytic transformations are analyzed.![]()

Abstract
The reaction of dialane [LAl-AlL] (1; L=dianion of 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene, dpp-bian) with carbon dioxide results in two different products depending on solvent. In toluene at temperatures of about 0 °C, the reaction gives cycloadduct [L(CO2 )Al-Al(O2 C)L] (2), whereas in diethyl ether, the reaction affords oxo-bridged carbamato derivative [L(CO2 )(Et2 O)Al(μ-O)AlL] (3). The DFT and QTAIM calculations provide reasonable explanations for the reversible formation of complex 2 in the course of two subsequent (2+4) cycloaddition reactions. Consecutive transition states with low activation barriers were revealed. Also, the DFT study demonstrated a crucial effect of diethyl ether coordination to aluminium on the reaction of dialane 1 with CO2 . The optimized structures of key intermediates were obtained for the reactions in the presence of Et2 O; calculated thermodynamic parameters unambiguously testify the irreversible formation of the product 3.

Abstract
A novel β-diketiminate stabilized gallium hydride, (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H (where (Dipp L)={HC(MeCDippN)2 }, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl and Ad=1-adamantyl), has been synthesized and shown to undergo insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ga-H bond under mild conditions. In this case, treatment of the resulting κ1 -formate complex with triethylsilane does not lead to regeneration of the hydride precursor. However, when combined with B(C6 F5 )3 , (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H catalyses the reductive hydrosilylation of CO2 . Under stoichiometric conditions, the addition of one equivalent of B(C6 F5 )3 to (Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H leads to the formation of a 3-coordinate cationic gallane complex, partnered with a hydroborate anion, [(Dipp L)Ga(Ad)][HB(C6 F5 )3 ]. This complex rapidly hydrometallates carbon dioxide and catalyses the selective reduction of CO2 to the formaldehyde oxidation level at 60 °C in the presence of Et3 SiH (yielding H2 C(OSiEt3 )2 ). When catalysis is undertaken in the presence of excess B(C6 F5 )3 , appreciable enhancement of activity is observed, with a corresponding reduction in selectivity: the product distribution includes H2 C(OSiEt3 )2 , CH4 and O(SiEt3 )2 . While this system represents proof-of-concept in CO2 hydrosilylation by a gallium hydride system, the TOF values obtained are relatively modest (max. 10 h-1 ). This is attributed to the strength of binding of the formatoborate anion to the gallium centre in the catalytic intermediate (Dipp L)Ga(Ad){OC(H)OB(C6 F5 )3 }, and the correspondingly slow rate of the turnover-limiting hydrosilylation step. In turn, this strength of binding can be related to the relatively high Lewis acidity measured for the [(Dipp L)Ga(Ad)]+ cation (AN=69.8).

Abstract
The potential of a dicationic strontium ansa‐arene complex for Lewis acid catalysis has been explored. The key to its synthesis was a simple salt metathesis from SrI2 and 2 Ag[Al(ORF)4], giving the base‐free strontium‐perfluoroalkoxyaluminate Sr[Al(ORF)4]2 (ORF=OC(CF3)3). Addition of an ansa‐arene yielded the highly Lewis acidic, dicationic strontium ansa‐arene complex. In preliminary experiments, the complex was successfully applied as a catalyst in CO2‐reduction to CH4 and a surprisingly controlled isobutylene polymerization reaction.

Abstract
Catalytic hydrosilylation of carbon dioxide has emerged as a promising approach for carbon dioxide utilization. It allows the reductive transformation of carbon dioxide into value-added products at the levels of formate, formaldehyde, methanol, and methane. Tremendous progress has been made in the area of carbon dioxide hydrosilylation since the first reports in 1981. This focus review describes recent advances in the design and catalytic performance of leading catalyst systems, including transition-metal, main-group, and transition-metal/main-group and main-group/main-group tandem catalysts. Emphasis is placed on discussions of key mechanistic features of these systems and efforts towards the development of more selective, efficient, and sustainable carbon dioxide hydrosilylation processes.

Abstract
Although gallium hydrides XnGaH3-n (X = monoanionic substituent) are usually stable compounds, cationic arene-solvated species [H2Ga(arene)2]+ spontaneously eliminate dihydrogen at room temperature to afford the arene-solvated gallium(I) compounds [Ga(PhF)2][CHB11Cl11] (1) and [Ga(Ph3CH)][B(C6F5)4] (3). A key requirement appears to be the presence of a weakly coordinating anion. Use of the more basic triflimide anion, [NTf2]-, reverses the stability, i.e., the gallium(III) hydride H2GaNTf2 (4) is more stable than the gallium(I) compound GaNTf2 (5). The experimental results are supported by DFT calculations. Compounds 1 and 3 can be used as catalysts for the oligomerization of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene and the hydrosilylation of benzophenone and 1-hexene.

Abstract
Classically closo-carborane anions, particularly [HCB11H11]- and [HCB9H9]-, and their derivatives have primarily been used as weakly coordinating anions to isolate reactive intermediates, platforms for stoichiometric and catalytic functionalization, counteranions for simple Lewis acid catalysis, and components of materials like liquid crystals. The aim of this article is to educate the reader on the contemporary nonclassical applications of these anions. Specifically, this review will cover new directions in main group catalysis utilized to achieve some of the most challenging catalytic reactions such as C-F, C-H, and C-C functionalizations that are difficult or impossible to realize with transition metals. In addition, the review will cover the utilization of the clusters as dianionic C σ-bound ligands for coordination chemistry, ligand substituents for coordination chemistry and advanced catalyst design, and covalently bound spectator substituents to stabilize radicals. Furthermore, their applications as solution-based and solid-state electrolytes for Li, Na, and Mg batteries will be discussed.

Abstract
Abstract
The bulky phenols 2,6-Ad2C6H3OH (Ad=adamantyl), A, (2,6-Ph2CH)2-4-Me-C6H2OH, B, and (2,6-Tol2CH)2-4-iPr-C6H2OH, C, react with one equivalent of Et3M (M=Al, Ga), Bu2Mg and Et2Zn to afford well-defined mono-phenolate complexes (ArOMRn)m. The aluminum and gallium phenolates derived from the very bulky phenol A are likely monomeric in the solid state. The other compounds are dimeric with bridging phenolates. Crystal structures of compounds with phenols B and C display the dimeric M2O2 cores of the phenolates and illustrate some deviations for the magnesium and zinc compounds. The former possesses stabilizing Mg···C contacts with one of the flanking arene groups of the phenolate substituent, and the latter may be viewed as an intermediate between a symmetric dimer and two monomers. All compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and their solution spectra are in agreement with the crystal structure data.

Abstract
An in-depth experimental and theoretical study of the substituent exchange reaction of silylium ions is presented. Apart from the substitution pattern at the silicon atom, the selectivity of this process is predominantly influenced by the counteranion, which is introduced with the trityl salt in the silylium ion generation. In contrast to Müller's protocol for the synthesis of triarylsilylium ions under kinetic control, the use of Reed's carborane anions leads to contact ion pairs, allowing selective formation of trialkylsilylium ions under thermodynamic control. DFT calculations finally revealed an unexpected mechanism for the rate-determining alkyl exchange step, which is initiated by an unusual 1,2-silyl migration in the intermediate ipso-disilylated arenium ion. The resulting ortho-disilylated arenium ion can then undergo an alkyl transfer via a low-barrier five-centered transition state.

Abstract
Using density functional theory computations, we investigated in detail the underlying reaction mechanism and crucial intermediates present during the reduction of carbon dioxide to methane with silanes, catalyzed by the cationic Ir-pincer complex ((POCOP)Ir(H)(acetone)+, POCOP = 2,6-bis(dibutylphosphinito)phenyl). Our study postulates a plausible catalytic cycle, which involves four stages, by sequentially transferring silane hydrogen to the CO2 molecule to give silylformate, bis(silyl)acetal, methoxysilane and the final product, methane. The first stage of reducing carbon dioxide to silylformate is the rate-determining step in the overall conversion, which occurs via the direct dissociation of the silane Si-H bond to the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond of a weakly coordinated Ir-CO2 moiety, with a free energy barrier of 29.5 kcal mol-1. The ionic SN2 outer-sphere pathway in which the CO2 molecule nucleophilically attacks at the η1-silane iridium complex to cleave the η1-Si-H bond, followed by the hydride transferring from iridium dihydride [(POCOP)IrH2] to the cation [O[double bond, length as m-dash]C-OSiMe3]+, is a slightly less favorable pathway, with a free energy barrier of 33.0 kcal mol-1 in solvent. The subsequent three reducing steps follow similar pathways: the ionic SN2 outer-sphere process with silylformate, bis(silyl)acetal and methoxysilane substrates nucleophilically attacking the η1-silane iridium complex to give the ion pairs [(POCOP)IrH2] [HC(OSiMe3)2]+, [(POCOP)IrH2] [CH2(OSiMe3)2(SiMe3)]+, and [(POCOP)IrH2] [CH3O(SiMe3)2]+, respectively, followed by the hydride transfer process. The rate-limiting steps of the three reducing stages are calculated to possess free energy barriers of 12.2, 16.4 and 22.9 kcal mol-1, respectively. Furthermore, our study indicates that the natural iridium dihydride [(POCOP)IrH2] generated along the ionic SN2 outer-sphere pathway could greatly facilitate the silylation of CO2, with a potential energy barrier calculated at a low value of 16.7 kcal mol-1.
