Abstract
Anxiety is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) occurring in up to 31% of the patients and affecting their quality of life. Despite the high prevalence, anxiety symptoms in PD are often underdiagnosed and, therefore, undertreated. To date, functional and structural neuroimaging studies have contributed to our understanding of the motor and cognitive symptomatology of PD. Yet, the underlying pathophysiology of anxiety symptoms in PD remains largely unknown and studies on their neural correlates are missing. Here, we used resting-state electroencephalography (RS-EEG) of 68 non-demented PD patients with or without clinically-defined anxiety and 25 healthy controls (HC) to assess spectral and functional connectivity fingerprints characterizing the PD-related anxiety. When comparing the brain activity of the PD anxious group (PD-A, N = 18) to both PD non-anxious (PD-NA, N = 50) and HC groups (N = 25) at baseline, our results showed increased fronto-parietal delta power and decreased frontal beta power depicting the PD-A group. Results also revealed hyper-connectivity networks predominating in delta, theta and gamma bands against prominent hypo-connectivity networks in alpha and beta bands as network signatures of anxiety in PD where the frontal, temporal, limbic and insular lobes exhibited the majority of significant connections. Moreover, the revealed EEG-based electrophysiological signatures were strongly associated with the clinical scores of anxiety and followed their progression trend over the course of the disease. We believe that the identification of the electrophysiological correlates of anxiety in PD using EEG is conducive toward more accurate prognosis and can ultimately support personalized psychiatric follow-up and the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety affects approximately 40% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, little is known about its predictors and development over time. OBJECTIVE To identify the clinical factors and biomarkers associated with development of anxiety in patients with newly diagnosed PD, and to test which risk factors predict increases in anxiety over time. METHODS Data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) were utilized. The primary outcome was the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Covariates were demographics, motor and non-motor symptoms, cognitive functions, dopamine transporter imaging data, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. We examined the association of risk factors at baseline and over 4 years with changes in anxiety scores over time. RESULTS A total of 252 patients met the inclusion criteria (mean age: 61.36 years, SD 9.53). At year 4, 42 patients had developed anxiety. Baseline predictors of increase in anxiety scores were greater autonomic dysfunction, dysexecutive function, CSF t-tau levels, excessive daytime sleepiness, and lower olfactory function scores but not motor scores. Over 4 years, change in anxiety scores correlated with deterioration in overall cognitive function, excessive daytime sleepiness, as well as depression and disability, and to a lesser degree worsening of Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) motor scores and caudate dopaminergic uptake changes. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that development of anxiety in PD is not primarily based on a dopaminergic deficit in the basal ganglia but related to non-dopaminergic or extrastriatal pathology. Early dysexecutive function predicts development of anxiety but increase in anxiety levels correlates most strongly with more global cognitive decline.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) on the rate of cognitive decline for both global cognition and specific cognitive domains in a cohort of patients from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). METHOD Prospectively longitudinal data were obtained from the PPMI cohort. NPS, including depression, anxiety, apathy, psychosis, impulse control disorders (ICDs), and cognition ability, were evaluated by a series of questionnaires. Linear mixed-effects models were used to investigate the relationship between NPS and the rate of cognitive decline. Generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were used to investigate the relationship between NPS and the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). RESULTS In total, 423 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) were recruited at baseline and 395, 378, 366, 346, and 315 participants were followed up at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years, respectively. Depression, anxiety, apathy, and psychosis were associated with global cognitive decline. Except for those with ICDs, patients with psychosis, depression, anxiety, and apathy were more likely to meet the criteria for MCI. Patients with depression and anxiety showed a progressive decline in four major cognitive domains. Apathy and ICDs were separately associated with a progressive decline in processing speed-attention and memory, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Neuropsychiatric symptoms, including psychosis, depression, anxiety, and apathy, could be used to predict future cognitive decline in patients with PD.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that has been recognized for over 200 years by its clinically dominant motor system impairment. There are prominent non-motor symptoms as well, and among these, psychiatric symptoms of depression and anxiety and cognitive impairment are common and can appear earlier than motor symptoms. Although the neurobiology underlying these particular PD-associated non-motor symptoms is not completely understood, the identification of PARK genes that contribute to hereditary and sporadic PD has enabled genetic models in animals that, in turn, have fostered ever deepening analyses of cells, synapses, circuits, and behaviors relevant to non-motor psychiatric and cognitive symptoms of human PD. Moreover, while it has long been recognized that inflammation is a prominent component of PD, recent studies demonstrate that brain-immune signaling crosstalk has significant modulatory effects on brain cell and synaptic function in the context of psychiatric symptoms. This review provides a focused update on such progress in understanding the neurobiology of PD-related non-motor psychiatric and cognitive symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mood symptoms are common features of Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) and have been linked to worse cognition. The goals of the present study were to compare the severity of anxiety, apathy, and depressive symptoms in PD, ET, and healthy controls (HC) and to examine differential relationships between mood and cognition. METHOD Older adults with idiopathic PD (N = 448), ET (N = 128), or HC (N = 136) completed a multi-domain neuropsychological assessment consisting of memory, executive function, and attention/working memory domains. Participants also completed self-reported mood measures. Between-group differences in mood and cognition were assessed, and hierarchical regression models were conducted to examine relationships between mood and cognition in each group. RESULTS Relative to the HC group, the PD and ET groups reported more mood symptoms and scored lower across all cognitive measures. There were no differences between the two movement disorder groups. Mood variables explained 3.9-13.7% of the total variance in cognitive domains, varying by disease group. For PD, apathy was the only unique predictor of executive function (β = -.114, p = .05), and trait anxiety was the only unique predictor of attention/working memory (β = -.188, p < .05). For ET, there were no unique predictors, though the overall models significantly predicted performance in the executive function and attention/working memory domains. CONCLUSIONS In a large cohort of ET and PD, we observed that the two groups had similar self-reported mood symptoms. Mood symptoms were differentially associated with cognition in PD versus ET. In PD, increased apathy was associated with worse executive function and higher trait anxiety predicted worse attention/working memory. For ET, there were no unique predictors, though the overall mood symptom severity was related to cognition. Our study highlights the importance of considering the relationship between mood and neuropsychological performance in individuals with movement disorders.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is identified by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc), and is correlated to aggregates of proteins such as α-synuclein, Lewy's bodies. Although the PD etiology remains poorly understood, evidence suggests a main role of oxidative stress on this process. Lippia grata Schauer, known as "alecrim-do-mato", "alecrim-de-vaqueiro", "alecrim-da-chapada", is a native bush from tropical areas mainly distributed throughout the Central and South America. This plant species is commonly used in traditional medicine for relief of pain and inflammation conditions, and that has proven antioxidant effects. We evaluated the effects of essential oil of the L. grata after its complexed with β-cyclodextrin (LIP) on PD animal model induced by reserpine (RES). Behavioral assessments were performed across the treatment. Upon completion the treatment, the animals were euthanized, afterwards their brains were isolated and processed for immunohistochemical and oxidative stress analysis. The LIP treatment delayed the onset of the behavior of catalepsy, decreased the number of oral movements and prevented the memory impairment on the novel object recognition task. In addition, the treatment with LIP protected against dopaminergic depletion in the SNpc and dorsal striatum (STRd), and decreased the α-syn immunoreactivity in the SNpc and hippocampus (HIP). Moreover, there was reduction of the oxidative stability index. These findings demonstrated that the LIP treatment has neuroprotective effect in a progressive parkinsonism model, suggesting that LIP could be an important source for novel treatment approaches in PD.

Abstract
Aim: Although primarily known as a respiratory system pathology, COVID-19 may cause various systems and cause serious complications including neuropsychiatric problems. These complications may be formulized as post-COVID syndrome. The current study aims to investigate prolonged cognitive, somatic and psychiatric effects of COVID-19.
Material and Method: A total number of 120 COVID-19 survivors were compared with 120 health controls in means of three measures, which are Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), Body Sensations Questionnaire (BSQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess cognitive difficulties, body perceptions and anxiety/depression.
Results: Our findings show that COVID-19 survivors have reported significantly more cognitive difficulties, increased body sensations and higher levels of anxiety. The groups did not differ in means of depression scores. Further, the measures were significantly correlated with each other.
Conclusion: This study reveal that COVID-19 survivors suffer from significant cognitive deficits in everyday activities, are significantly more sensitive to various body sensations and have increased anxiety levels. In discordance with the current literature, our findings showed that COVID-19 patients are not more depressed than healthy subjects. In summary, the current study showed that various neuropsychiatric complications may be an important part of prolonged effects of COVID-19.

Abstract
Depression is one of the most frequent and burdensome non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD), across all stages. Even when its severity is mild, PD depression has a great impact on quality of life for these patients and their caregivers. Accordingly, accurate diagnosis, supported by validated scales, identification of risk factors, and recognition of motor and non-motor symptoms comorbid to depression are critical to understanding the neurobiology of depression, which in turn determines the effectiveness of dopaminergic drugs, antidepressants and non-pharmacological interventions. Recent advances using in vivo functional and structural imaging demonstrate that PD depression is underpinned by dysfunction of limbic networks and monoaminergic systems, depending on the stage of PD and its associated symptoms, including apathy, anxiety, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), cognitive impairment and dementia. In particular, the evolution of serotonergic, noradrenergic, and dopaminergic dysfunction and abnormalities of limbic circuits across time, involving the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortices, amygdala, thalamus and ventral striatum, help to delineate the variable expression of depression in patients with prodromal, early and advanced PD. Evidence is accumulating to support the use of dual serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (desipramine, nortriptyline, venlafaxine) in patients with PD and moderate to severe depression, while selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and cognitive behavioral therapy may also be considered. In all patients, recent findings advocate that optimization of dopamine replacement therapy and evaluation of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus to improve motor symptoms represents an important first step, in addition to physical activity. Overall, this review indicates that increasing understanding of neurobiological changes help to implement a roadmap of tailored interventions for patients with PD and depression, depending on the stage and comorbid symptoms underlying PD subtypes and their prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders demands methods of accessible assessment that reliably captures cognition in daily life contexts. We investigated the feasibility of smartphone cognitive assessment in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), who may have cognitive impairment in addition to motor-related problems that limit attending in-person clinics. We examined how daily-life factors predicted smartphone cognitive performance and examined the convergent validity of smartphone assessment with traditional neuropsychological tests. METHODS Twenty-seven nondemented individuals with mild-moderate PD attended one in-lab session and responded to smartphone notifications over 10 days. The smartphone app queried participants 5x/day about their location, mood, alertness, exercise, and medication state and administered mobile games of working memory and executive function. RESULTS Response rate to prompts was high, demonstrating feasibility of the approach. Between-subject reliability was high on both cognitive games. Within-subject variability was higher for working memory than executive function. Strong convergent validity was seen between traditional tests and smartphone working memory but not executive function, reflecting the latter's ceiling effects. Participants performed better on mobile working memory tasks when at home and after recent exercise. Less self-reported daytime sleepiness and lower PD symptom burden predicted a stronger association between later time of day and higher smartphone test performance. CONCLUSIONS These findings support feasibility and validity of repeat smartphone assessments of cognition and provide preliminary evidence of the effects of context on cognitive variability in PD. Further development of this accessible assessment method could increase sensitivity and specificity regarding daily cognitive dysfunction for PD and other clinical populations.

Abstract
Human anxiety is a grave mental health concern that needs to be addressed in the appropriate manner in order to develop a healthy society. In this study, an objective human anxiety assessment framework is developed by using physiological signals of electroencephalography (EEG) and recorded in response to exposure therapy. The EEG signals of twenty-three subjects from an existing database called "A Database for Anxious States which is based on a Psychological Stimulation (DASPS)" are used for anxiety quantification into two and four levels. The EEG signals are pre-processed using appropriate noise filtering techniques to remove unwanted ocular and muscular artifacts. Channel selection is performed to select the significantly different electrodes using statistical analysis techniques for binary and four-level classification of human anxiety, respectively. Features are extracted from the data of selected EEG channels in the frequency domain. Frequency band selection is applied to select the appropriate combination of EEG frequency bands, which in this study are theta and beta bands. Feature selection is applied to the features of the selected EEG frequency bands. Finally, the selected subset of features from the appropriate frequency bands of the statistically significant EEG channels were classified using multiple machine learning algorithms. An accuracy of 94.90% and 92.74% is attained for two and four-level anxiety classification using a random forest classifier with 9 and 10 features, respectively. The proposed state anxiety classification framework outperforms the existing anxiety detection framework in terms of accuracy with a smaller number of features which reduces the computational complexity of the algorithm.

Abstract
Movement abnormalities, by definition, and cognitive changes, to varying extents, affect every patient with Parkinson's disease (PD) and are attributed to the underlying neurodegenerative disease. Various psychiatric disorders occur in most patients at some point over the course of PD, including in the prodromal phase. Even though psychiatric disturbances tend to aggravate motor and cognitive deficits, they are under-recognized and under-treated, and the role of the underlying neurological disease is often minimized. To provide an integrated approach to understanding neuropsychiatric aspects of PD, this chapter reviews how cognitive changes in PD relate to the common psychiatric disturbances in PD along with the prevalence, phenomenology, pathophysiology, and treatment of each.

Abstract
Objective Anxiety, depression, and apathy are the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. They impair cognitive functioning and have a profound impact on quality of life. This follow-up study aims to investigate the predictive value of anxiety, depression, and apathy on the development of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in PD patients. Methods Twenty-nine cognitively unimpaired PD patients (mean age 68.2 SD ± 7.12 years; 13 women) participated in this study. At Baseline (BL) levels of apathy (Apathy Evaluation Scale, AES), depression (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI-II), and anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory, BAI), were assessed. Cognitive status was reassessed three years later according to MCI/non-MCI status. For statistics, we used binary logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis to examine anxiety, apathy, and depression at BL as a predictor of MCI status three years later. Results Eight of the 29 patients developed MCI. Anxiety level at BL was found to predict MCI status at three-year follow-up (OR = 1.20, CI = 1.02–1.41, p = 0.02), while depression (OR = 1.16, CI = 0.93–1.47, p = 0.20) and apathy (OR = 1.06, CI = 0.92–1.23, p = 0.40) did not predict MCI status. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of BAI for discriminating PD-non-MCI from PD-MCI was 0.79 (CI = 0.61–0.98). The optimal classification threshold yielded a sensitivity of 75.0 % and a specificity of 76.2 %. Neither apathy nor depression at BL discriminated between PD-non-MCI patients from PD-MCI three years later. Conclusions This study shows an association between anxiety and the development of MCI in PD patients, although the association between apathy, depression, and MCI did not reach a significant level.

Abstract
Background: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), which are associated with a higher risk of cognitive decline, are widespread in the patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The previous studies have reported inconsistent factors related to SCCs in the patients with late-onset PD (LOPD), and there is limited information on SCCs in the patients with early-onset PD (EOPD). Objective: We aimed to investigate the factors associated with SCCs in the drug-naïve patients with EOPD and LOPD without cognitive impairment. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 332 drug-naïve patients with PD, among whom 134 were EOPD and 198 were LOPD. Motor and non-motor symptoms, such as global objective cognitive status, depression, anxiety, apathy, fatigue, sleep, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, orthostatic hypotension, and excessive daytime sleepiness, were assessed. Results: Twenty-five (18.66%) patients with EOPD and 49 (24.74%) patients with LOPD reported SCCs. A multivariate binary logistic regression analysis revealed that older age at onset [odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, P = 0.002], higher apathy score (OR = 1.13, P = 0.003), and lower scores in the visuospatial/executive abilities (OR = 0.25, P < 0.001) and memory (OR = 0.50, P = 0.024) domains of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment were associated with a higher risk of SCCs in the EOPD group. Higher apathy (OR = 1.06, P = 0.011) and anxiety (OR = 1.14, P < 0.001) scores were associated with SCCs in the LOPD group. Conclusion: Subjective cognitive complaints are only associated with mood disorders in patients with LOPD. In addition, SCCs may reflect subthreshold cognitive impairment in the patients with EOPD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preliminary evidence has demonstrated a link between anxiety and memory impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). This study further investigated this association using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for anxiety disorders and a standardized cognitive test battery. METHODS A convenience sample of 89 PD patients without dementia was recruited from neurology outpatient clinics. A cross-sectional design was applied. Participants completed two semi-structured interviews. The first interview diagnosed DSM-5 anxiety disorders, unspecified anxiety disorder, and no anxiety. The second interview applied a neurocognitive test battery comprising two tests for each domain. Logistic regression models compared cognitive characteristics associated with anxiety disorders to no anxiety. RESULTS Clinically significant anxiety was associated with immediate verbal memory impairment compared to the no anxiety group (OR, 95% CI 0.52, 0.30-0.89; p = 0.018), controlling for sex and age. The anxiety disorders group demonstrated immediate (OR, 95% CI 0.46, 0.26-0.83; p = 0.010) and delayed (OR, 95% CI 0.63, 0.40-0.99; p = 0.047) verbal memory impairments compared to those without anxiety, controlling for sex and age. This association remained for immediate (OR, 95% CI 0.43, 0.22-0.84; p = 0.013), but not delayed verbal memory impairment (OR, 95% CI 0.65, 0.39-1.06; p = 0.081) when additionally controlling for disease severity, education and levodopa dose. CONCLUSION These findings present first evidence that anxiety disorders are associated with verbal memory impairment in PD and have implications for the management and treatment of anxiety in PD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This paper seeks to describe anxiety's different symptomatologic presentations in Parkinson's disease (PD), its longitudinal course and predictors, as well as its motor and non-motor correlates. It also reviews the available screening tools and different treatment modalities. RECENT FINDINGS In PD, longitudinal predictors of anxiety are mostly non-motor non-dopaminergic symptoms. The longitudinal course of anxiety is mainly a stable one. The Parkinson Anxiety Scale and the Geriatric Anxiety Scale are the 2 recommended screening tools. A third of PD patients suffer from an anxiety disorder at any time point. It can precede or follow PD motor symptoms. Anxiety is associated with demographic, disease-related motor and non-motor features. There is a lack of studies evaluating psychotropic treatment of anxiety in PD. Adjustment of dopaminergic treatment is indicated when anxiety is associated with motor fluctuations. DBS can be useful as well as CBT and body-mind interventions.

Abstract
Background Cognitive impairment (CI) is one of the most feared and debilitating complications of PD. No therapy has been shown to slow or prevent CI in PD. Objective To determine associations between modifiable comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease risk factors, mood disorders, and sleep characteristics, and rate of cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods Data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohort was queried for baseline cardiovascular disease risk factors, mood disorders, and sleep characteristics. Linear mixed- effects models (LME) were used to examine the association between baseline factors and change in cognition, evaluated by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) over time. Baseline comorbidities found to affect MoCA decline were assessed for an association with focal cognitive domains using LME. Results Higher Body Mass Index (BMI) (β = -0.009, P = 0.039), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (β = -0.005, P < 0.001), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) (β = -0.034, P < 0.001), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) (β = -0.017, P = 0.003), and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ) (β = -0.037, P < 0.001) were associated with faster rates of MoCA decline. Using established cut-offs for clinically significant symptoms, being overweight, or the presence of depression, excessive day time sleepiness (EDS), and possible REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD), were all associated with faster rate of cognitive decline. Conclusion Several modifiable baseline comorbidities are associated with faster rate of CI over time in patients with PD. These associations identify potential opportunities for early intervention that could influence CI in PD.

Abstract
Anxiety and related disorders are the most common type of mental disorders in both the general population and the neurological clinic. A current typology of anxiety disorders includes panic disorder, agoraphobia, simple (specific) phobias, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders often accompany diseases of the nervous system, worsen their course and impede treatment, and the degree of anxiety usually corresponds to the severity of neurological symptoms. Anxiety may precede brain diseases, but the answer to the question of whether it contributes to these diseases or predicts them or can be an early manifestation of these diseases requires further studies. Modern approaches to the treatment of anxiety involve the use of benzodiazepines, antidepressants, some mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, as well as psychological interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and psychiatric symptoms (anxiety, depression, and apathy) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). While studies have supported the association between psychiatric symptoms and cognitive performance in PD, it is unclear if the magnitude of link between psychiatric symptoms and cognitive health is stronger by MCI status. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between cognitive performance and psychiatric symptoms in PD and whether MCI status moderates this association. METHODS/DESIGN Participants (N = 187) completed a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment that included measures of attention, language, executive function (EF), visuospatial ability, episodic memory, and psychiatric symptoms. Participants were classified as PD-MCI (N = 73) or PD-normal cognition (NC; N = 114). Linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between psychiatric symptoms and cognitive performance and the moderating effect of PD-MCI status. RESULTS There were no differences in mean psychiatric symptoms between PD-MCI and PD-NC. Psychiatric symptoms were predominantly associated with worse EF. The magnitude of the association between anxiety and worse EF was larger in participants with PD-MCI compared with PD-NC. A multivariable regression analysis examining the independent contributions of each symptom demonstrated the most robust association between EF and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and apathy are associated with worse executive functioning in individuals with PD. PD-MCI may be important in moderating the association between cognitive performance, specifically anxiety, and EF. Factors that promote cognitive resilience may serve as key therapeutic modalities in managing neuropsychiatric symptoms in PD.

Abstract
Anxiety is a common neuropsychiatric symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). Until now, anxiety has been consistently related to cognitive deficits and severity of motor symptoms, whereas the association between anxiety and motor subtypes (TD-PD, tremor dominant and PIGD-PD, postural instability/gait disturbances dominant) revealed contrasting results. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between PD motor subtypes and anxiety and to explore whether the relationship between anxiety and cognitive deficits occurs in a specific PD motor subtype. Consecutive PD outpatients were recruited and divided into TD-PD and PIGD-PD groups according to Jankovic et al.'s criteria. All participants underwent a neuropsychological battery to evaluate anxiety, apathy, the global cognitive functioning, memory abilities, executive and visuo-constructional functions. Thirty-six patients with TD-PD and 35 patients with PIGD-PD were enrolled. The two groups did not differ on demographical and clinical variables. As for the severity of anxiety, no significant difference between the two groups was found. Regression analysis revealed that higher anxiety score was associated with poorer performance on constructional visuospatial test in both TD-PD and PIGD-PD. Clinical variables were not associated with anxiety in the two groups. Our findings indicated that the severity of anxiety was not associated with any PD motor subtypes. Moreover, regression analysis revealed that impaired visuo-constructional abilities are related to anxiety independently of PD motor subtypes. Since altered fronto-parietal network might be one of the pathogenetic mechanisms underpinning anxiety and constructional visuospatial deficits, the treatment of cognitive dysfunctions might reduce anxious symptoms.

Abstract
In the comprehensive care of people with Parkinson disease (PD), recognition of cognitive impairment is essential. Cognitive impairment in PD can be varied in its clinical features and rates of progression and is now recognized to occur throughout the disease, from early, de novo to more advanced stages. However, the many factors related to the disease itself, underlying pathologies, comorbidities, and genetics may play a role in the development of mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and dementia (PDD). To date, the field lacks curative or disease-modifying treatments for PD cognitive impairment and has few effective, robust symptomatic therapies for PDD or PD-MCI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nonmotor symptoms, including depression, anxiety, apathy, and cognitive dysfunction, are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although a link between mood symptoms and cognitive impairment in PD has been theorized vis-à-vis striatal dopamine depletion, studies have been inconsistent regarding the relationship between mood symptoms and cognitive function. Inconsistencies may reflect the cross-sectional nature of previous studies. The current study examined the bidirectional longitudinal relationship between mood and cognition. METHOD Data were obtained from 310 individuals newly diagnosed with PD, who were followed up to 4 years (baseline, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th annual follow-ups). Apathy, anxiety, depressive symptoms, motor severity, and neurocognitive functioning were assessed at each annual assessment. The longitudinal relationship between apathy, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and cognition was analyzed with multilevel models. RESULTS Over the 4-year period, more severe depressive symptoms were related to worse performance on tasks of processing speed, verbal learning, and verbal delayed recall. Additionally, there was a significant Depression × Time interaction, suggesting that individuals with more severe depressive symptoms experience more rapid declines in global cognitive functioning and verbal learning. Apathy and anxiety were not significantly related to performance in any cognitive test. Lagged models revealed that changes in depression precede declines in working memory, verbal learning, delayed verbal recall, and global cognition. CONCLUSION Findings suggest depressive symptoms may be a harbinger for future cognitive decline among individuals with PD. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms impacting life quality. The main aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of PD on objective (i.e., working memory and semantic memory) and subjective memory (i.e., self-reported seriousness of forgetting, mnemonic usage and actual memory efficiency) controlling for the effect of depressive symptomatology. The relationship of working memory performance to gait and mobility indices was also examined, as well as the factors predicting subjective memory were explored. Fifty-four community-dwelling adults (mean age = 72.3 years, SD = 8.8) were recruited in Sardinia, an Italian island located in the Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, 27 non-demented adults with mild, early-stage PD were matched for years of education, age, and gender with a sample of healthy individuals. Participants completed a test battery assessing objective memory, subjective memory, and depressive symptoms, and an instrumental analysis of gait and functional mobility was performed. Participants with PD had poorer objective memory across all indices measured and displayed a restricted set of gait and posture impairments. Working memory performance was selectively related to gait and posture measures. Moreover, participants with PD had lower trust in their memory efficiency relative to the past than the control healthy group. Finally, 22% of the variance in seriousness of the consequences of forgetting was predicted by education and general cognitive efficiency. Overall, the present findings confirm the presence of changes in both objective and subjective memory in PD, independent from depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor symptoms, but nonmotor symptoms also significantly impair daily functioning and reduce quality of life. Anxiety is prevalent and debilitating in PD, but remains understudied and undertreated. Much affective research in PD focuses on depression rather than anxiety, and as such, there are no evidence-based treatments for anxiety in this population. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown promise for treating depression in PD and may be efficacious for anxiety. This exploratory study implemented a multiple-baseline single-case experimental design to evaluate the utility and feasibility of CBT for individuals with PD who also met criteria for a DSM-5 anxiety disorder (n = 9). Participants were randomized to a 2-, 4-, or 6-week baseline phase, followed by 12 CBT sessions, and two post treatment assessments (immediately post treatment and 6-week follow-up). Multiple outcome measures of anxiety and depression were administered weekly during baseline and intervention. Weekly CBT sessions were conducted in-person (n = 5) or via secure videoconferencing (n = 4). At post treatment, seven of the nine participants showed significant reductions in anxiety and/or depression, with changes functionally related to treatment and most improvements maintained at 6-week follow-up. Effects of CBT on secondary outcomes varied across participants, with preliminary evidence for reduction in fear of falling. Adherence and retention were high, as were treatment satisfaction and acceptability. The findings of this pilot study provide preliminary evidence for the utility of CBT as a feasible treatment for anxiety and comorbid depressive symptoms in PD and highlight the potential of telehealth interventions for mood in this population.

Abstract
In Parkinson's disease (PD), concurrent declines in cognitive and motor domain function can severely limit an individual's ability to conduct daily tasks. Current diagnostic methods, however, lack precision in differentiating domain-specific contributions of cognitive or motor impairments based on a patients' clinical manifestation. Fear of falling (FOF) is a common clinical manifestation among the elderly, in which both cognitive and motor impairments can lead to significant barriers to a patients' physical and social activities. The present study evaluated whether a set of analytical and machine-learning approaches could be used to help delineate boundary conditions and separate cognitive and motor contributions to a patient's own perception of self-efficacy and FOF. Cognitive and motor clinical scores, in conjunction with FOF, were collected from 57 Parkinson's patients during a multi-center rehabilitation intervention trial. Statistical methodology was used to extract a subset of uncorrelated cognitive and motor components associated with cognitive and motor predictors, which were then used to independently identify and visualize cognitive and motor dimensions associated with FOF. We found that a central cognitive process, extracted from tests of executive, attentional, and visuoperceptive function, was a unique and significant independent cognitive predictor of FOF in PD. In addition, we provide evidence that the approaches described here may be used to computationally discern specific types of FOF based on separable cognitive or motor models. Our results are consistent with a contemporary model that the deterioration of a central cognitive mechanism that modulates self-efficacy also plays a critical role in FOF in PD.
