Myelin Surfactant Assemblies as Dynamic Pathways Guiding the Growth of Electrodeposited Copper Dendrites

Self-organization of inorganic matter enables bottom-up construction of materials with target shapes suited to their function. Positioning the building blocks in the growth process involves a well-balanced interplay of the reaction and diffusion. Whereas (supra)molecular structures have been used to template such growth processes, we reasoned that molecular assemblies can be employed to actively create concentration gradients that guide the deposition of solid, wire-like structures. The core of our approach comprises the interaction between myelin assemblies that deliver copper(II) ions to the tips of copper dendrites, which in turn grow along the Cu2+ gradient upon electrodeposition. First, we successfully include Cu2+ ions among amphiphile bilayers in myelin filaments, which grow from tri(ethylene glycol) monododecyl ether (C12E3) source droplets over air-water interfaces. Second, we characterize the growth of dendritic copper structures upon electrodeposition from a negative electrode at the sub-mM Cu2+ concentrations that are anticipated upon release from copper(II)-loaded myelins. Third, we assess the intricate growth of copper dendrites upon electrodeposition, when combined with copper(II)-loaded myelins. The myelins deliver Cu2+ at a negative electrode, feeding copper dendrite growth upon electrodeposition. Intriguingly, the copper dendrites follow the Cu2+ gradient toward the myelins and grow along them toward the source droplet. We demonstrate the growth of dynamic connections among electrodes and surfactant droplets in reconfigurable setups─featuring a unique interplay between molecular assemblies and inorganic, solid structures.

Thin film structural color is widespread in slime molds (Myxomycetes, Amoebozoa)

Brilliant colors in nature arise from the interference of light with periodic nanostructures resulting in structural color. While such biological photonic structures have long attracted interest in insects and plants, they are little known in other groups of organisms. Unexpected in the kingdom of Amoebozoa, which assembles unicellular organisms, structural colors were observed in myxomycetes, an evolutionary group of amoebae forming macroscopic, fungal-like structures. Previous work related the sparkling appearance of Diachea leucopodia to thin film interference. Using optical and ultrastructural characterization, we here investigated the occurrence of structural color across 22 species representing two major evolutionary clades of myxomycetes including 14 genera. All investigated species showed thin film interference at the peridium, producing colors with hues distributed throughout the visible range that were altered by pigmentary absorption. A white reflective layer of densely packed calcium-rich shells is observed in a compound peridium in Metatrichia vesparium, whose formation and function are still unknown. These results raise interesting questions on the biological relevance of thin film structural colors in myxomycetes, suggesting they may be a by-product of their reproductive cycle.

Iron-based hybrid polyionic complexes as chemical reservoirs for the pH-triggered synthesis of Prussian blue nanoparticles

HYPOTHESIS

Hybrid polyion complexes (HPICs) obtained from the complexation in aqueous solution of a double hydrophilic block copolymer and metal ions can act as efficient precursors for the controlled synthesis of nanoparticles. In particular, the possibility to control the availability of metal ions by playing on the pH conditions is of special interest to obtain nanoparticles with controlled size and composition.

EXPERIMENTS

HPICs based on Fe³⁺ ions were used to initiate the formation of Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles in presence of potassium ferrocyanide in reaction media with varying pH values.

FINDINGS

Complexed Fe³⁺ ions within HPICs can be easily released by adjusting the pH value either through the addition of a base/acid or by using a merocyanine photoacid. This allows to modulate the reactivity of Fe³⁺ ions with potassium ferrocyanide present in solution. As a result, PB nanoparticles with different structures (core, core-shell), composition and controlled size are obtained.

On stars and spikes: Resolving the skeletal morphology of planktonic Acantharia using synchrotron X-ray nanotomography and deep learning image segmentation

Acantharia (Acantharea) are wide-spread marine protozoa, presenting one of the rare examples of strontium sulfate mineralization in the biosphere. Their endoskeletons consist of 20 spicules arranged according to a unique geometric pattern named Müller's principle. Given the diverse mineral architecture of the Acantharia class, we set out to examine the complex three-dimensional skeletal morphology at the nanometer scale using synchrotron X-ray nanotomography, followed by image segmentation based on deep learning methods. The present study focuses on how the spicules emanate from the robust central junction in the orders Symphyacanthida and Arthracanthida, the geometry of lateral spicule wings as well as pockets of interspicular space, which may be involved in cell compartmentalization. Through these morphometric studies, we observed subtle deviations from the previously described spatial arrangement of the spicules. According to our data, spicule shapes are adjusted in opposite spicules as to accommodate the overall spicule arrangement. In all types examined, previously unknown interspicular interstices were found in areas where radial spicules meet, which could have implications for the crystal growth mechanism and overall endoskeletal integrity. A deeper understanding of the spiculogenesis in Acantharia can provide biomimetic routes towards complex inorganic shapes. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Morphogenesis, the origin and control of shape, provides an avenue towards tailored inorganic materials. In this work, we explored the intricate skeletal organization of planktonic Acantharia, which are amongst the few strontium sulfate biomineralizing organisms in nature. By using nanoscale X-ray imaging and deep learning image segmentation, we found deviations from previously described geometric patterns and undiscovered skeletal features. The bio-inspired synthesis of inorganic materials with complex shape has important ramifications for solid-state chemistry and nanotechnology.

Nanoarchitectonics beyond perfect order - not quite perfect but quite useful

Nanoarchitectonics, like architectonics, allows the design and building of structures, but at the nanoscale. Unlike those in architectonics, and even macro-, micro-, and atomic-scale architectonics, the assembled structures at the nanoscale do not always follow the projected design. In fact, they do follow the projected design but only for self-assembly processes producing structures with perfect order. Here, we look at nanoarchitectonics allowing the building of nanostructures without a perfect arrangement of building blocks. Here, fabrication of structures from molecules, polymers, nanoparticles, and nanosheets to polymer brushes, layer-by-layer assembly structures, and hydrogels through self-assembly processes is discussed, where perfect order is not necessarily the aim to be achieved. Both planar substrate and spherical template-based assemblies are discussed, showing the challenging nature of research in this field and the usefulness of such structures for numerous applications, which are also discussed here.

Effect of metal/dielectric substrates on photopolymerization of BITh thin films

We have studied effects of metal–dielectric substrates on photopolymerization of [2,2ʹ-Bi-1H-indene]-1,1ʹ-dione-3,3ʹ-diyl diheptanoate (BITh) monomer. We synthetized BITh and spin-coated it onto a variety of dielectric, metallic, and metal–dielectric substrates. The films were exposed to radiation of a UV–Visible Xe lamp, causing photo-polymerization of monomer molecules. The magnitude and the rate of the photo-polymerization were monitored by measuring the strength of the ~ 480 nm absorption band, which existed in the monomer but not in the polymer. Expectedly, the rate of photo-polymerization changed nearly linearly with the change of the pumping intensity. In contrast with our early study of photo-degradation of semiconducting polymer P3HT, the rate of photo-polymerization of BITh is getting modestly higher if the monomer film is deposited on top of silver separated from the monomer by a thin insulating MgF₂ layer preventing a charge transfer. This effect is partly due to a constructive interference of the incident and reflected light waves, as well as known in the literature effects of metal/dielectric substrates on a variety of spectroscopic and energy transfer parameters. At the same time, the rate of photopolymerization is getting threefold larger if monomer is deposited on Ag film directly and charge transfer is allowed. Finally, Au substrates cause modest (~ 50%) enhancement of both monomer film absorption and the rate of photo-polymerization.

A Comparative Study of PMETAC-Modified Mesoporous Silica and Titania Thin Films for Molecular Transport Manipulation

The manipulation and understanding of molecular transport across functionalized nanopores will take us closer to mimicking biological membranes and thus to design high-performance permselective separation systems. In this work, Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of (2-methacryloyloxy)-ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (METAC) was performed on both mesoporous silica and mesoporous titania thin films. Pores were proven to be filled using ellipsometry and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Furthermore, the employed method leads to a polymer overlayer, whose thickness could be discriminated using a double-layer ellipsometry model. Cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal that the transport of electrochemically active probes is affected by the PMETAC presence, both due to the polymer overlayer and the confined charge of the pore-tethered PMETAC. A more detailed study demonstrates that ion permeability depends on the combined role of the inorganic scaffolds' (titania and silica) surface chemistry and the steric and charge exclusion properties of the polyelectrolyte. Interestingly, highly charged negative walls with positively charged polymers may resemble zwitterionic polymer behavior in confined environments.

Introgression of chromosome 1P from Agropyron cristatum reduces leaf size and plant height to improve the plant architecture of common wheat

Introducing Agropyron cristatum chromosome 1P into common wheat can significantly reduce the plant height and leaf size, which can improve the plant architecture of common wheat. A new direction in crop breeding is the improvement of plant architecture for dense plantings to obtain higher yields. Wild relatives carry an abundant genetic variation that can increase the diversity of genes for crop genetic improvement. In this study, the A. cristatum 1P addition line, 1PS and 1PL telosomic addition lines were obtained by backcrossing the addition/substitution line II-3-1 (2n = 20'' W + 1P" + 2P") with the commercial recurrent parent cv. Jimai 22. Four continuous years of agronomic trait investigation in the genetic populations suggested that the introduction of A. cristatum chromosome 1P into wheat can significantly improve wheat plant architecture by reducing the plant height, leaf length and leaf width. A. cristatum chromosome arm 1PS reduced the plant height and leaf length of wheat, whereas introducing A. cristatum chromosome arm 1PL reduced the plant height, leaf length and leaf width. Altogether, our results demonstrated that A. cristatum chromosome 1P carries the dominant genes for small leaves and a dwarf habit for the enhancement of plant architecture in wheat. This study highlights wild relative donors as new gene resources for improving wheat plant architecture for dense planting.

Biomimetic Silk Macroporous Materials for Drug Delivery Obtained via Ice-Templating

Silk from Bombyx mori is one of the most exciting materials in nature. The apparently simple arrangement of its two major components─two parallel filaments of silk fibroin (SF) coated by a common sericin (SS) sheath─provides a combination of mechanical and surface properties that can protect the moth during its most vulnerable phase, the pupal stage. Here, we recapitulate the topology of native silk fibers but shape them into three-dimensional porous constructs using an unprecedented design strategy. We demonstrate, for the first time, the potential of these macroporous silk foams as dermal patches for wound protection and for the controlled delivery of Rifamycin (Rif), a model antibiotic. The method implies (i) removing SS from silk fibers; (ii) shaping SF solutions into macroporous foams via ice-templating; (iii) stabilizing the SF macroporous foam in a methanolic solution of Rif; and (iv) coating Rif-loaded SF foams with a SS sheath. The resulting SS@SF foams exhibit water wicking capacity and accommodate up to ∼20% deformation without detaching from a skin model. The antibacterial behavior of Rif-loaded SS@SF foams against Staphylococcus aureus on agar plates outperforms that of SF foams (>1 week and 4 days, respectively). The reassembly of natural materials as macroporous foams─illustrated here for the reconstruction of silk-based materials─can be extended to other multicomponent natural materials and may play an important role in applications where controlled release of molecules and fluid transport are pivotal.

Finding or Creating a Living Organism? Past and Future Thought Experiments in Astrobiology Applied to Artificial Intelligence

This is a digest of how various researchers in biology and astrobiology have explored questions of what defines living organisms-definitions based on functions or structures observed in organisms, or on systems terms, or on mathematical conceptions like closure, chirality, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, or on biosemiotics, or on Darwinian evolution-to clarify the field and make it easier for endeavors in artificial intelligence to make progress. Current ideas are described to promote work between astrobiologists and computer scientists, each concerned with living organisms. A four-parameter framework is presented as a scaffold that is later developed into what machines lack to be considered alive: systems, evolution, energy and consciousness, and includes Jagers operators and the idea of dual closure. A novel definition of consciousness is developed which describes mental objects both with and without communicable properties, and this helps to clarify how consciousness in machines may be studied as an emergent process related to choice functions in systems. A perspective on how quantization, acting on nucleic acids, sets up natural limits to system behavior is offered as a partial address to the problem of biogenesis.

Size-encoded hierarchical self-assembly of nanoparticles into chains and tubules

Hierarchical structures with sophisticated patterns allow the emergence of challenging properties. However, the highly cooperative and specific interactions needed for assembly spanning different length scales are typically lacking in inorganic nanoparticles (NPs). Here we show that size can be a common structural driving force for controlling hierarchical assembly of inorganic NPs into anisotropic superstructures. It involves first the self-limiting assembly of small CdS NPs into large supraparticles and their subsequent spontaneous organization into chains and tubules hundreds of nanometers long. Our quantitative calculations based on DLVO theory reveals an intrinsic size effect relating to the dimension change of assembly units in accordance with a negative cooperativity. It is shown that the size increase in building blocks creates an effective kinetic barrier contrast at different attachment sites due to the increase of interparticle electrostatic repulsion, switching the assembly from thermodynamically preferred 3D to kinetically favored 1D pathway. The size-encoded hierarchical assembly is accompanied by the ligand-controlled Oswald ripening process, which is responsible for the variation of hierarchical patterns from chains to tubules. The general principle in governing multistage inorganic NP ordering represents an important guideline toward the complex mesoscale structures that may surpass traditional materials in both design and functionality.

Effect of Drying on the Fabrication of MgAl Layered Double Hydroxides

This study aimed to evaluate the synthesis of MgAl/LDH from the drying process perspective, evaluating the influence of temperature (75-90 °C) and time (16-20 h) in the drying process. The synthesis was performed, maintaining a ratio of 2:1 of Mg/Al, and the drying was conducted according to a 2² experimental design: four axial points and three repetitions at the central point. The surface area and pore diameter ranged from 4.09 to 18.55 m²/g and 12.50 to 24.46 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis indicated the drying-caused variation of the LDH typical bands intensities. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the tendency of the increase of agglomeration with the temperature elevation. The drying parameters' influence was evident for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis observing the crystallite size increment, from 13.10 to 38.94 nm, and basal spacing variation, from 7.52 to 7.64 Å. The statistical models for growing crystal and reduction of the basal spacing were physically consistent but with low values of R ². The drying time and temperature had a considerable influence on the chemical, physical, structural, and morphological properties of LDH.

Shaping Tin Nanocomposites through Transient Local Conversion Reactions

Shape-preserving conversion offers a promising strategy to transform self-assembled structures into advanced functional components with customizable composition and shape. Specifically, the assembly of barium carbonate nanocrystals and amorphous silica nanocomposites (BaCO₃/SiO₂) offers a plethora of programmable three-dimensional (3D) microscopic geometries, and the nanocrystals can subsequently be converted into functional chemical compositions, while preserving the original 3D geometry. Despite this progress, the scope of these conversion reactions has been limited by the requirement to form carbonate salts. Here, we overcome this limitation using a single-step cation/anion exchange that is driven by the temporal pH change at the converting nanocomposite. We demonstrate the proof of principle by converting BaCO₃/SiO₂ nanocomposites into tin-containing nanocomposites, a metal without a stable carbonate. We find that BaCO₃/SiO₂ nanocomposites convert in a single step into hydroromarchite nanocomposites (Sn₃(OH)₂O₂/SiO₂) with excellent preservation of the 3D geometry and fine features. We explore the versatility and tunability of these Sn₃(OH)₂O₂/SiO₂ nanocomposites as a precursor for functional compositions by developing shape-preserving conversion routes to two desirable compositions: tin perovskites (CH₃NH₃SnX₃, with X = I or Br) with tunable photoluminescence (PL) and cassiterite (SnO₂)-a widely used transparent conductor. Ultimately, these findings may enable integration of functional chemical compositions into advanced morphologies for next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Rational Design of Bioinspired Nanocomposites with Tunable Catalytic Activity

Biological assembly processes offer inspiration for ordering building blocks across multiple length scales into advanced functional materials. Such bioinspired strategies are attractive for assembling supported catalysts, where shaping and structuring across length scales are essential for their performance but still remain tremendously difficult to achieve. Here, we present a simple bioinspired route toward supported catalysts with tunable activity and selectivity. We coprecipitate shape-controlled nanocomposites with large specific surface areas of barium carbonate nanocrystals that are uniformly embedded in a silica support. Subsequently, we exchange the barium carbonate to cobalt while preserving the nanoscopic layout and microscopic shape, and demonstrate their catalytic performances in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as a case study. Control over the crystal size between 10 and 17 nm offers tunable activity and selectivity for shorter (C₅-C₁₁) and longer (C₂₀₊) hydrocarbons, respectively. Hence, these results open simple, versatile, and scalable routes to tunable and highly reactive bioinspired catalysts.

The temptin gene of the clade Lophotrochozoa is involved in formation of the prismatic layer during biomineralization in molluscs

The biomineralization mechanism of mollusc shell has been studied for a long time, but there is a lack of understanding about the relationship between the shell formation in vitro and the signaling system in vivo. In this study, we cloned a novel shell matrix protein gene (hc-temptin), which only be characterized as a water-borne protein pheromone of molluscs in previous studies, from the freshwater mussel Hyriopsis cumingii. By bioinformatics analysis we found that temptin was a gene unique to the clade Lophotrochozoa, and it exists in all mollusc taxa except Cephalopoda. The current data supported the premise that temptin was generated in the early emergence of molluscs and that it maintained a high mutation rate to evolve relative independently. The specificity of hc-temptin expression in the mantle tissue suggests its potential to participate in biomineralization. Its sequence contained typical Ca²⁺ binding sites. Our experiments involving the pearl formation process, damaged shell repair process, and RNAi experiment showed that hc-temptin was a shell matrix protein that plays an important role in formation of the prismatic layer. The results of this study provided new insights about the origin of the temptin gene and its role in molluscs.

Synthetic tissue engineering with smart, cytomimetic protocells

Synthetic protocells are rudimentary origin-of-life versions of natural cell counterparts. Protocells are widely engineered to advance efforts and useful accepted outcomes in synthetic biology, soft matter chemistry and bioinspired materials chemistry. Protocells in collective symbiosis generate synthetic proto-tissues that display unprecedented autonomy and yield advanced materials with desirable life-like features for smart multi-drug delivery, micro bioreactors, renewable fuel production, environmental clean-up, and medicine. Current levels of protocell and proto-tissue functionality and adaptivity are just sufficient to apply them in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, where they animate biomaterials and increase therapeutic cell productivity. As of now, structural biomaterials for tissue engineering lack the properties of living biomaterials such as self-repair, stochasticity, cell synergy and the sequencing of molecular and cellular events. Future protocell-based biomaterials provide these core properties of living organisms, but excluding evolution. Most importantly, protocells are programmable for a broad array of cell functions and behaviors and collectively in consortia are tunable for multivariate functions. Inspired by upcoming designs of smart protocells, we review their developmental background and cover the most recently reported developments in this promising field of synthetic proto-biology. Our emphasis is on manufacturing proto-tissues for tissue engineering of organoids, stem cell niches and reprogramming and tissue formation through stages of embryonic development. We also highlight the exciting reported developments arising from fusing living cells and tissues, in a valuable hybrid symbiosis, with synthetic counterparts to bring about novel functions, and living tissue products for a new synthetic tissue engineering discipline.

Biomineralized calcium carbonate nanohybrids for mild photothermal heating-enhanced gene therapy

It is of great significance to develop multifunctional gene carriers to achieve treatments with enhanced therapeutic effects in an inflammation-free manner. In this work, assembled micelles of polysaccharide were utilized for the biomineralization of calcium carbonate to produce one-dimensional Alg-CaCO₃ nanoparticles. In order to introduce both functions of mild hyperthermia and gene transfection, polydopamine (PDA) coating was applied to conjugate cationic polymers on the surface of nanoparticles. The resultant ACDP nanohybrids exhibited enhanced performance as gene carriers under near infrared (NIR) light irradiation at a low power density. Meanwhile, the pH-responsive degradation of gene carriers could further promote gene release for better effectiveness. The enhanced gene therapy induces tumor cell apoptosis, which could prevent inflammatory responses. The feasibility of mild hyperthermia-enhanced gene therapy for tumor treatment was investigated in vitro and in vivo. In addition, dual-modal ultrasound (US) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging was also realized to monitor and guide the treatment processes. The current work provides a new avenue for the construction of multifunctional platform to realize cancer therapy with improved therapeutic effectiveness in an inflammation-free manner.

Minerals in biology and medicine

Natural minerals ('stone drugs') have been used in traditional Chinese medicines for over 2000 years, but there is potential for modern-day use of inorganic minerals to combat viral infections, antimicrobial resistance, and for other areas in need of new therapies and diagnostic aids. Metal and mineral surfaces on scales from milli-to nanometres, either natural or synthetic, are patterned or can be modified with hydrophilic/hydrophobic and ionic/covalent target-recognition sites. They introduce new strategies for medical applications. Such surfaces have novel properties compared to single metal centres. Moreover, 3D mineral particles (including hybrid organo-minerals) can have reactive cavities, and some minerals have dynamic movement of metal ions, anions, and other molecules within their structures. Minerals have a unique ability to interact with viruses, microbes and macro-biomolecules through multipoint ionic and/or non-covalent contacts, with potential for novel applications in therapy and biotechnology. Investigations of mineral deposits in biology, with their often inherent heterogeneity and tendency to become chemically-modified on isolation, are highly challenging, but new methods for their study, including in intact tissues, hold promise for future advances.

Electrospun nanofibers with surface oriented lamellar patterns and their potential applications

This work shows conclusively that lamellar surface patterns can be obtained with diverse ceramic compositions during electrospinning. The lamellar structure formation is governed by the creation of an outer shell during the thermal treatment of initially uniform cylindrical fibers, consisting of polymer and pre-ceramic compounds. By changing the polymer to pre-ceramic ratio in the electrospinning solution, we demonstrate for the first time a facile way to control the obtained surface structure and the orientation of the lamellas. Furthermore, the lamellar morphology was illustrated in seven different compositions. This report provides a new pathway to obtain unique surface patterns in metal-oxide nanofibers and demonstrates their utilization in different applications. Specifically, we demonstrate the prospect of utilizing Ni-Al-O fibers with lamellar structures as alternative Li-ion battery anodes. In addition, we show the potential of Fe-Al-O fibers as an effective catalyst material.

Identification and genetic analysis of qCL1.2, a novel allele of the "green revolution" gene SD1 from wild rice (Oryza rufipogon) that enhances plant height

BACKGROUND

The exploitation of novel alleles from wild rice that were lost during rice cultivation could be very important for rice breeding and evolutionary studies. Plant height (PH) was a target of artificial selection during rice domestication and is still a target of modern breeding. The "green revolution" gene semi-dwarf 1 (SD1) were well documented and used in the past decades, allele from wild rice could provide new insights into the functions and evolution of this gene.

RESULTS

We identified a PH-related quantitative trait locus, qCL1.2,from wild riceusing a set of chromosome segment substitution lines. qCL1.2encodesa novel allele of SD1 gene. The wild allele of SD1 is a dominant locus that can significantly promote rice internode length by regulating the expression levels of genes involved in gibberellin biosynthesis and signal transduction. Nucleotide diversity and haplotype network analyses of the SD1 gene were performed using 2822 rice landraces. Two previously reported functional nucleotide polymorphisms clearly differentiated japonica and indica rice; however, they were not associated with PH selection. Other new functional nucleotide polymorphisms in the coding, but not promoter, regions were involved in PH selection during rice domestication. Our study increasesunderstanding of the rice SD1 gene and provides additional evidence of this gene's selection during rice domestication.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide evidence thatSD1 gene from wild rice enhances plant height and new functional nucleotide polymorphisms of this gene were artificially selected during cultivated rice differentiation.

Lipid-based mesophases as matrices for nanoscale reactions

Lipidic mesophases are versatile bioorganic materials that have been effectively employed as nanoscale matrices for membrane protein crystallization, drug delivery and as food emulsifiers over the last 30 years. In this review, the focus is upon studies that have employed non-lamellar lipid mesophases as matrices for organic, inorganic and enzymatic reactions. The ability of lipidic mesophases to incorporate hydrophilic, amphiphilic and hydrophobic molecules, together with the high interfacial area of the lipidic cubic and inverse hexagonal phases has been exploited in heterogeneous catalysis as well as for enzyme immobilization. The unique nanostructure of these mesophases is the driving force behind their ability to act as templates for synthesis, resulting in the creation of highly ordered polymeric and inorganic materials with complex geometries.

Supramolecular Energy Materials

Self-assembly is a bioinspired strategy to craft materials for renewable and clean energy technologies. In plants, the alignment and assembly of the light-harvesting protein machinery in the green leaf optimize the ability to efficiently convert light from the sun to form chemical bonds. In artificial systems, strategies based on self-assembly using noncovalent interactions offer the possibility to mimic this functional correlation among molecules to optimize photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and energy storage. One of the long-term objectives of the field described here as supramolecular energy materials is to learn how to design soft materials containing light-harvesting assemblies and catalysts to generate fuels and useful chemicals. Supramolecular energy materials also hold great potential in the design of systems for photovoltaics in which intermolecular interactions in self-assembled structures, for example, in electron donor and acceptor phases, maximize charge transport and avoid exciton recombination. Possible pathways to integrate organic and inorganic structures by templating strategies and electrodeposition to create materials relevant to energy challenges including photoconductors and supercapacitors are also described. The final topic discussed is the synthesis of hybrid perovskites in which organic molecules are used to modify both structure and functions, which may include chemical stability, photovoltaics, and light emission.

Fluorescence Sensing of Nucleic Acid by Curcumin Encapsulated Poly(Ethylene Oxide)-Block-Poly(Propylene Oxide)-Block-Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Based Nanocapsules

In a novel approach, curcumin has been encapsulated inside Poly(Ethylene Oxide)-Block-Poly(Propylene Oxide)-Block-Poly(Ethylene Oxide) (F108) nanocapsules. FTIR spectra have indicated a type of hydrogen bonding and dipole interaction between curcumin and F108. Fluorescence and UV-visible absorption profiles of curcumin in nanocapsules have indicated location of curcumin in more hydrophobic microenvironment. The relative fluorescence yield has increased by 6 times in the nanocapsules, which renders them as more sensitive probes to be used later on in sensing study. Therefore, based on the functionality of curcumin as a fluorescent transducer, encapsulated curcumin is used in biomedical application as DNA and RNA sensing. Detection limits are detected as 50 μM and 60 μM for DNA and RNA respectively. Linear dynamic concentration range obtained in this proposed method is much higher than reported in literature. The interaction between the nanocapsules and targeted DNA/RNA molecules is further approved by zeta potential studies. Furthermore, the real interaction of DNA with the encapsulated curcumin is confirmed by the interaction of the adenine and cytosine nucleotides. This has been verified through zeta potential measurements. Moreover, our prepared nanocapsules has presented a high percentage recovery of DNA and RNA (96-101%). Finally, stability results have illustrated a high photostability of encapsulated curcumin, indicating that proposed nanocapsules can be considered as a stable sensor during measurement time.

Azamacrocycles and tertiary amines can be used to form size tuneable hollow structures or monodisperse oxide nanoparticles depending on the 'M' source

We show that the azamacrocycle 'cyclam' (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclodecane) in conjunction with a silicon catecholate ion generates novel hollow tetragonal tube-like crystalline materials [(C6H4O2)3Si][C10H26N4]·H2O, whose dimensions can be tuned according to the pH of the reaction medium. The synthesis approach was successful for both silicon and germanium and we hypothesise that a range of other catecholate precursors of elements such as iron could be used to generate a large array of inorganic materials with interesting morphologies. The synthesis approach can be extended to tertiary diamines with functional group spacing playing an important role in the efficacy of complexation. Of the molecules explored to date, a C2 spacing (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (4MEDAE)), leads to the most efficient structure control with hollow hexagonal tube-like structures being formed. In addition, we show that azamacrocycles, in the presence of unbuffered tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) solutions can be used to manipulate silica formation and provide a fast (ca. 10 minutes) synthesis route to particles whose diameter can be tuned from ca. 20 nm to several hundreds of nm under reaction conditions (no extremes of pH) that make the sols suitable for direct use in biotechnological applications.

Homochirality in biomineral suprastructures induced by assembly of single-enantiomer amino acids from a nonracemic mixture

Since Pasteur first successfully separated right-handed and left-handed tartrate crystals in 1848, the understanding of how homochirality is achieved from enantiomeric mixtures has long been incomplete. Here, we report on a chirality dominance effect where organized, three-dimensional homochiral suprastructures of the biomineral calcium carbonate (vaterite) can be induced from a mixed nonracemic amino acid system. Right-handed (counterclockwise) homochiral vaterite helicoids are induced when the amino acid L-Asp is in the majority, whereas left-handed (clockwise) homochiral morphology is induced when D-Asp is in the majority. Unexpectedly, the Asp that incorporates into the homochiral vaterite helicoids maintains the same enantiomer ratio as that of the initial growth solution, thus showing chirality transfer without chirality amplification. Changes in the degree of chirality of the vaterite helicoids are postulated to result from the extent of majority enantiomer assembly on the mineral surface. These mechanistic insights potentially have major implications for high-level advanced materials synthesis.

Art Forms in Nature: radiolaria from Haeckel and Blaschka to 3D nanotomography, quantitative image analysis, evolution, and contemporary art

The illustrations of the late nineteenth-/twentieth-century scientist/artist Ernst Haeckel, as depicted in his book Art Forms in Nature (originally in German as Kunstformen der Natur, 1898-1904), have been at the intersection of art, biology, and mathematics for over a century. Haeckel's images of radiolaria (microscopic protozoans described as amoeba in glass houses) have influenced various artists for over a century (glass artists Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka; sculptor Henry Moore; architects Rene Binet, Zaha Hadid, Antoni Gaudi, Chris Bosse and Frank Gehry; and designers-filmmakers Charles and Ray Eames). We focus on this history and extend the artistic, biological, and mathematical contributions of this interdisciplinary legacy by going beyond the 3D visual, topological, and geometric analyses of radiolaria to include the nanoscale with graph theory, spatial statistics, and computational geometry. We analyze multiple visualizations of radiolaria generated through Haeckel's images, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, micro- and nanotomography, and three-dimensional computer rendering. Mathematical analyses are conducted using the image analysis package "Ka-me: A Voronoi Image Analyzer." Further analyses utilize three-dimensional printing, laser etched crystalline glass art, and sculpture. Open sharing of three-dimensional nanotomography of radiolaria and other protozoa through MorphoSource enables new possibilities for artists, architects, paleontologists, structural morphologists, taxonomists, museum curators, and mathematical biologists. Distinctively, newer models of radiolaria fit into a larger context of productive interdisciplinary collaboration that continues Haeckel's legacy that lay a foundation for new work in biomimetic design and additive manufacturing where artistic and scientific models mutually and robustly generate wonder, beauty, utility, curiosity, insight, environmentalism, theory, and questions.

Molecular Modeling of Surfactant Micellization Using Solvent-Accessible Surface Area

We report a new implicit solvent simulation model for studying the self-assembly of surfactants, where the hydrophobic interactions were captured by calculating the relative changes of the solvent-accessible surface area (SASA) of the hydrophobic domains. Using histogram-reweighting grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that this approach allows us to match both the experimental critical micelle concentrations (cmc) and micellar aggregation numbers simultaneously with a single phenomenological surface tension γ_SASA for the poly(oxyethylene) monoalkyl ether (C _mE _n) surfactants in aqueous solutions. Excellent transferability is observed: the same model can accurately predict the experimental cmc and aggregation numbers for the C _mE _n surfactants with the alkyl lengths m between 6 and 12 and the poly(oxyethylene) lengths n between 1 and 9. The SASA-based implicit solvent model put forward in this work is general and may be applied to study more complex amphiphilic systems such as surfactants with branched alkyl chains or surfactant-hydrocarbon mixtures.

Mechanism of silica-lysozyme composite formation unravelled by in situ fast SAXS

A quantitative understanding of aggregation mechanisms leading to the formation of composites of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and proteins in aqueous media is of paramount interest for colloid chemistry. In particular, the interactions between silica (SiO2) NPs and lysozyme (LZM) have attracted attention, because LZM is well-known to adsorb strongly to silica NPs, while at the same time preserving its enzymatic activity. The inherent nature of the aggregation processes leading to NP-LZM composites involves structural changes at length scales from few to at least hundreds of nanometres but also time scales much smaller than one second. To unravel these we used in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and followed the subtle interparticle interactions in solution at a time resolution of 50 ms/frame (20 fps). We show that if the size of silica NPs (ca. 5 nm diameter) is matched by the dimensions of LZM, the evolving scattering patterns contain a unique structure-factor contribution originating from the presence of LZM. We developed a scattering model and applied it to analyse this structure function, which allowed us to extract structural information on the deformation of lysozyme molecules during aggregation, as well as to derive the mechanisms of composite formation.

Dynamics of DNA Origami Lattice Formation at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

The self-organized formation of regular patterns is not only a fascinating topic encountered in a multitude of natural and artificial systems, but also presents a versatile and powerful route toward large-scale nanostructure assembly and materials synthesis. The hierarchical, interface-assisted assembly of DNA origami nanostructures into regular, 2D lattices represents a particularly promising example, as the resulting lattices may exhibit an astonishing degree of order and can be further utilized as masks in molecular lithography. Here, we thus investigate the development of order in such 2D DNA origami lattices assembled on mica surfaces by employing in situ high-speed atomic force microscopy imaging. DNA origami lattice formation is found to resemble thin-film growth in several aspects. In particular, the Na⁺/Mg²⁺ ratio controls DNA origami adsorption, surface diffusion, and desorption, and is thus equivalent in its effects to substrate temperature which controls adatom dynamics in thin-film deposition. Consequently, we observe a pronounced dependence of lattice order on Na⁺ concentration. At low Na⁺ concentrations, lattice formation resembles random deposition and results in unordered monolayers, whereas very high Na⁺ concentrations are accompanied by rapid diffusion and especially DNA origami desorption, which prevent lattice formation. At intermediate Na⁺ concentrations, highly ordered DNA origami lattices are obtained that display an intricate symmetry, stemming from the complex shape of the employed Rothemund triangle. Nevertheless, even under such optimized conditions, the lattices display a considerable number of defects, including grain boundaries, point and line defects, and screw-like dislocations. By monitoring the dynamics of selected lattice defects, we identify mechanisms that limit the obtainable degree of lattice order. Possible routes toward further increasing lattice order by postassembly annealing are discussed.

Marine Skeletons: Towards Hard Tissue Repair and Regeneration

Musculoskeletal disorders in the elderly have significantly increased due to the increase in an ageing population. The treatment of these diseases necessitates surgical procedures, including total joint replacements such as hip and knee joints. Over the years a number of treatment options have been specifically established which are either permanent or use temporary natural materials such as marine skeletons that possess unique architectural structure and chemical composition for the repair and regeneration of bone tissue. This review paper will give an overview of presently used materials and marine structures for hard tissue repair and regeneration, drugs of marine origin and other marine products which show potential for musculoskeletal treatment.

Directed nucleation and growth by balancing local supersaturation and substrate/nucleus lattice mismatch

Controlling nucleation and growth is crucial in biological and artificial mineralization and self-assembly processes. The nucleation barrier is determined by the chemistry of the interfaces at which crystallization occurs and local supersaturation. Although chemically tailored substrates and lattice mismatches are routinely used to modify energy landscape at the substrate/nucleus interface and thereby steer heterogeneous nucleation, strategies to combine this with control over local supersaturations have remained virtually unexplored. Here we demonstrate simultaneous control over both parameters to direct the positioning and growth direction of mineralizing compounds on preselected polymorphic substrates. We exploit the polymorphic nature of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) to locally manipulate the carbonate concentration and lattice mismatch between the nucleus and substrate, such that barium carbonate (BaCO₃) and strontium carbonate (SrCO₃) nucleate only on specific CaCO₃ polymorphs. Based on this approach we position different materials and shapes on predetermined CaCO₃ polymorphs in sequential steps, and guide the growth direction using locally created supersaturations. These results shed light on nature's remarkable mineralization capabilities and outline fabrication strategies for advanced materials, such as ceramics, photonic structures, and semiconductors.
