Probing many-body dynamics on a 51-atom quantum simulator

Phantom energy in the nonlinear response of a quantum many-body scar state

Quantum many-body scars are notable as nonthermal, low-entanglement states that exist at high energies. In this study, we used attractively interacting dysprosium gases to create scar states that are stable enough to be driven into a strongly nonlinear regime while retaining their character. We measured how the kinetic and total energies evolve after quenching the confining potential. Although the bare interactions are attractive, the atoms behave as if they repel each other: Their kinetic energy paradoxically decreases as the gas is compressed. The missing "phantom" energy is quantified by benchmarking our experimental results against generalized hydrodynamics calculations. We present evidence that the missing kinetic energy is carried by undetected, very high momentum atoms.

Confined Meson Excitations in Rydberg-Atom Arrays Coupled to a Cavity Field

Confinement is a pivotal phenomenon in numerous models of high-energy and statistical physics. In this study, we investigate the emergence of confined meson excitations within a one-dimensional system, comprising Rydberg-dressed atoms trapped and coupled to a cavity field. This system can be effectively represented by an Ising-Dicke Hamiltonian model. The observed ground-state phase diagram reveals a first-order transition from a ferromagnetic-subradiant phase to a paramagnetic-superradiant phase. Notably, a quench near the transition point within the ferromagnetic-subradiant phase induces meson oscillations in the spins and leads to the creation of squeezed-vacuum light states. We suggest a method for the photonic characterization of these confined excitations, utilizing homodyne detection and single-site imaging techniques to observe the localized particles. The methodologies and results detailed in this Letter are feasible for implementation on existing cavity-QED platforms, employing Rydberg-atom arrays in deep optical lattices or optical tweezers.

Superconducting Quantum Simulation for Many-Body Physics beyond Equilibrium

Quantum computing is an exciting field that uses quantum principles, such as quantum superposition and entanglement, to tackle complex computational problems. Superconducting quantum circuits, based on Josephson junctions, is one of the most promising physical realizations to achieve the long-term goal of building fault-tolerant quantum computers. The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of this field, where many intermediate-scale multi-qubit experiments emerged to simulate nonequilibrium quantum many-body dynamics that are challenging for classical computers. Here, we review the basic concepts of superconducting quantum simulation and their recent experimental progress in exploring exotic nonequilibrium quantum phenomena emerging in strongly interacting many-body systems, e.g., many-body localization, quantum many-body scars, and discrete time crystals. We further discuss the prospects of quantum simulation experiments to truly solve open problems in nonequilibrium many-body systems.

Realization of higher-order topological lattices on a quantum computer

Programmable quantum simulators may one day outperform classical computers at certain tasks. But at present, the range of viable applications with noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices remains limited by gate errors and the number of high-quality qubits. Here, we develop an approach that places digital NISQ hardware as a versatile platform for simulating multi-dimensional condensed matter systems. Our method encodes a high-dimensional lattice in terms of many-body interactions on a reduced-dimension model, thereby taking full advantage of the exponentially large Hilbert space of the host quantum system. With circuit optimization and error mitigation techniques, we measured on IBM superconducting quantum processors the topological state dynamics and protected mid-gap spectra of higher-order topological lattices, in up to four dimensions, with high accuracy. Our projected resource requirements scale favorably with system size and lattice dimensionality compared to classical computation, suggesting a possible route to useful quantum advantage in the longer term.

Bath-induced interactions and transient dynamics in open quantum systems at strong coupling: Effective Hamiltonian approach

Understanding the dynamics of dissipative quantum systems, particularly beyond the weak coupling approximation, is central to various quantum applications. While numerically exact methods provide accurate solutions, they often lack the analytical insight provided by theoretical approaches. In this study, we employ the recently developed method dubbed the effective Hamiltonian theory to understand the dynamics of system-bath configurations without resorting to a perturbative description of the system-bath coupling energy. Through a combination of mapping steps and truncation, the effective Hamiltonian theory offers both analytical insights into signatures of strong couplings in open quantum systems and a straightforward path for numerical simulations. To validate the accuracy of the method, we apply it to two canonical models: a single spin immersed in a bosonic bath and two noninteracting spins in a common bath. In both cases, we study the transient regime and the steady state limit at nonzero temperature and spanning system-bath interactions from the weak to the strong regime. By comparing the results of the effective Hamiltonian theory with numerically exact simulations, we show that although the former overlooks non-Markovian features in the transient equilibration dynamics, it correctly captures non-perturbative bath-generated couplings between otherwise non-interacting spins, as observed in their synchronization dynamics and correlations. Altogether, the effective Hamiltonian theory offers a powerful approach for understanding strong coupling dynamics and thermodynamics, capturing the signatures of such interactions in both relaxation dynamics and in the steady state limit.

Enhancing a Many-Body Dipolar Rydberg Tweezer Array with Arbitrary Local Controls

We implement and characterize a protocol that enables arbitrary local controls in a dipolar atom array, where the degree of freedom is encoded in a pair of Rydberg states. Our approach relies on a combination of local addressing beams and global microwave fields. Using this method, we directly prepare two different types of three-atom entangled states, including a W state and a state exhibiting finite chirality. We verify the nature of the underlying entanglement by performing quantum state tomography. Finally, leveraging our ability to measure multibasis, multibody observables, we explore the adiabatic preparation of low-energy states in a frustrated geometry consisting of a pair of triangular plaquettes. By using local addressing to tune the symmetry of the initial state, we demonstrate the ability to prepare correlated states distinguished only by correlations of their chirality (a fundamentally six-body observable). Our protocol is generic, allowing for rotations on arbitrary sub-groups of atoms within the array at arbitrary times during the experiment; this extends the scope of capabilities for quantum simulations of the dipolar XY model.

Nonmesonic Quantum Many-Body Scars in a 1D Lattice Gauge Theory

We investigate the meson excitations (particle-antiparticle bound states) in quantum many-body scars of a 1D Z_{2} lattice gauge theory coupled to a dynamical spin-1/2 chain as a matter field. By introducing a string representation of the physical Hilbert space, we express a scar state |Ψ_{n,l}⟩ as a superposition of all string bases with an identical string number n and a total length l. For the small-l scar state |Ψ_{n,l}⟩, the gauge-invariant spin exchange correlation function of the matter field hosts an exponential decay as the distance increases, indicating the existence of stable mesons. However, for large l, the correlation function exhibits a power-law decay, signaling the emergence of nonmesonic excitations. Furthermore, we show that this mesonic-nonmesonic crossover can be detected by the quench dynamics, starting from two low-entangled initial states, respectively, which are experimentally feasible in quantum simulators. Our results expand the physics of quantum many-body scars in lattice gauge theories and reveal that the nonmesonic state can also manifest ergodicity breaking.

Antiferromagnetic Bosonic t-J Models and Their Quantum Simulation in Tweezer Arrays

The combination of optical tweezer arrays with strong interactions-via dipole exchange of molecules and Van der Waals interactions of Rydberg atoms-has opened the door for the exploration of a wide variety of quantum spin models. A next significant step will be the combination of such settings with mobile dopants. This will enable one to simulate the physics believed to underlie many strongly correlated quantum materials. Here, we propose an experimental scheme to realize bosonic t-J models via encoding the local Hilbert space in a set of three internal atomic or molecular states. By engineering antiferromagnetic (AFM) couplings between spins, competition between charge motion and magnetic order similar to that in high-T_{c} cuprates can be realized. Since the ground states of the 2D bosonic AFM t-J model we propose to realize have not been studied extensively before, we start by analyzing the case of two dopants-the simplest instance in which their bosonic statistics plays a role-and compare our results to the fermionic case. We perform large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations on six-legged cylinders, and find a strong tendency for bosonic holes to form stripes. This demonstrates that bosonic, AFM t-J models may contain similar physics as the collective phases in strongly correlated electrons.

Resonant exchange of chiral Majorana Fermions modulated by two parallel quantum dots

Resonant exchange of the chiral Majorana fermions (MFs) that is coupled to two parallel Majorana zero modes (MZMs) or two parallel quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. We find that, in the two QDs coupling case, the resonant exchange for the chiral MFs is analogous to that in the MZM coupling case. We further propose a circuit based on topological superconductor, which is formed by the proximity coupling of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a s-wave superconductor, to observe the resonant exchange of chiral MFs pairs. The numerical calculations show that the resonant transmission of the chiral MFs can be adjusted by varying the coupling parameters at superconductor phase differenceΔφ=π. It is particularly noteworthy that, by only modulating the coupling strength between the two QDs, the resonant exchange may be switched on or off. By adding another MZM, the non-Abelian braiding like operation can be realized. Therefore, our design scheme may provide another way for non-Abelian braiding operation of MFs and the findings may have potential application value in the realization of topological quantum computers.

Engineering of a Low-Entropy Quantum Simulator for Strongly Correlated Electrons Using Cold Atoms with SU(N)-Symmetric Interactions

An advanced cooling scheme, incorporating entropy engineering, is vital for isolated artificial quantum systems designed to emulate the low-temperature physics of strongly correlated electron systems. This study theoretically demonstrates a cooling method employing multicomponent Fermi gases with SU(N)-symmetric interactions, focusing on the case of ^{173}Yb atoms in a two-dimensional optical lattice. Adiabatically introducing a nonuniform state-selective laser gives rise to two distinct subsystems: a central low-entropy region, exclusively composed of two specific spin components, acts as a quantum simulator for strongly correlated electron systems, while the surrounding N-component mixture retains a significant portion of the entropy of the system. The total particle numbers for each component are good quantum numbers, creating a sharp boundary for the two-component region. The cooling efficiency is assessed through extensive finite-temperature Lanczos calculations. The results lay the foundation for quantum simulations of two-dimensional systems of Hubbard or Heisenberg type, offering crucial insights into intriguing low-temperature phenomena in condensed-matter physics.

Controllable quantum scars induced by spin-orbit couplings in quantum dots

Spin-orbit couplings (SOCs), originating from the relativistic corrections in the Dirac equation, offer nonlinearity in the classical limit and are capable of driving chaotic dynamics. In a nanoscale quantum dot confined by a two-dimensional parabolic potential with SOCs, various quantum scar states emerge quasi-periodically in the eigenstates of the system, when the ratio of confinement energies in the two directions is nearly commensurable. The scars, displaying both quantum interference and classical trajectory features on the electron density, due to relativistic effects, serve as a bridge between the classical and quantum behaviors of the system. When the strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus SOCs are identical, the chaos in the classical limit is eliminated as the classical Hamilton's equations become linear, leading to the disappearance of all quantum scar states. Importantly, the quantum scars induced by SOCs are robust against small perturbations of system parameters. With precise control achievable through external gating, the quantum scar induced by Rashba SOC is fully controllable and detectable.

Tunable Superdiffusion in Integrable Spin Chains Using Correlated Initial States

Although integrable spin chains host only ballistically propagating particles, they can still feature diffusive charge transfer. This diffusive charge transfer originates from quasiparticle charge fluctuations inherited from the initial state's magnetization Gaussian fluctuations. We show that ensembles of initial states with quasi-long-range correlations lead to superdiffusive charge transfer with a tunable dynamical exponent. We substantiate our prediction with numerical simulations and discuss how finite time and finite size effects might cause deviations.

Quantum annealing of a frustrated magnet

Quantum annealing, which involves quantum tunnelling among possible solutions, has state-of-the-art applications not only in quickly finding the lowest-energy configuration of a complex system, but also in quantum computing. Here we report a single-crystal study of the frustrated magnet α-CoV2O6, consisting of a triangular arrangement of ferromagnetic Ising spin chains without evident structural disorder. We observe quantum annealing phenomena resulting from time-reversal symmetry breaking in a tiny transverse field. Below ~ 1 K, the system exhibits no indication of approaching the lowest-energy state for at least 15 hours in zero transverse field, but quickly converges towards that configuration with a nearly temperature-independent relaxation time of ~ 10 seconds in a transverse field of ~ 3.5 mK. Our many-body simulations show qualitative agreement with the experimental results, and suggest that a tiny transverse field can profoundly enhance quantum spin fluctuations, triggering rapid quantum annealing process from topological metastable Kosterlitz-Thouless phases, at low temperatures.

Embedding Quantum Many-Body Scars into Decoherence-Free Subspaces

Quantum many-body scars are nonthermal excited eigenstates of nonintegrable Hamiltonians, which could support coherent revival dynamics from special initial states when scars form an equally spaced tower in the energy spectrum. For open quantum systems, engineering many-body scarred dynamics by a controlled coupling to the environment remains largely unexplored. Here, we provide a general framework to exactly embed quantum many-body scars into the decoherence-free subspaces of Lindblad master equations. The dissipative scarred dynamics manifest persistent periodic oscillations for generic initial states, and can be practically utilized to prepare scar states with potential quantum metrology applications. We construct the Liouvillian dissipators with the local projectors that annihilate the whole scar towers, and utilize the Hamiltonian part to rotate the undesired states out of the null space of dissipators. We demonstrate our protocol through several typical models hosting many-body scar towers and propose an experimental scheme to observe the dissipative scarred dynamics based on digital quantum simulations and resetting ancilla qubits.

An optical tweezer array of ultracold polyatomic molecules

Polyatomic molecules have rich structural features that make them uniquely suited to applications in quantum information science1-3, quantum simulation4-6, ultracold chemistry7 and searches for physics beyond the standard model8-10. However, a key challenge is fully controlling both the internal quantum state and the motional degrees of freedom of the molecules. Here we demonstrate the creation of an optical tweezer array of individual polyatomic molecules, CaOH, with quantum control of their internal quantum state. The complex quantum structure of CaOH results in a non-trivial dependence of the molecules' behaviour on the tweezer light wavelength. We control this interaction and directly and non-destructively image individual molecules in the tweezer array with a fidelity greater than 90%. The molecules are manipulated at the single internal quantum state level, thus demonstrating coherent state control in a tweezer array. The platform demonstrated here will enable a variety of experiments using individual polyatomic molecules with arbitrary spatial arrangement.

Trapping Ion Coulomb Crystals in an Optical Lattice

We report the optical trapping of multiple ions localized at individual lattice sites of a one-dimensional optical lattice. We observe a fivefold increased range of axial dc-electric field strength for which ions can be optically trapped with high probability and an increase of the axial eigenfrequency by 2 orders of magnitude compared to an optical dipole trap without interference but of similar intensity. Our findings motivate an alternative pathway to extend arrays of trapped ions in size and dimension, enabling quantum simulations with particles interacting at long range.

Exact Quench Dynamics of the Floquet Quantum East Model at the Deterministic Point

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the Floquet quantum East model (a Trotterized version of the kinetically constrained quantum East spin chain) at its "deterministic point," where evolution is defined in terms of CNOT permutation gates. We solve exactly the thermalization dynamics for a broad class of initial product states by means of "space evolution." We prove: (i) the entanglement of a block of spins grows at most at one-half the maximal speed allowed by locality (i.e., half the speed of dual-unitary circuits); (ii) if the block of spins is initially prepared in a classical configuration, speed of entanglement is a quarter of the maximum; (iii) thermalization to the infinite temperature state is reached exactly in a time that scales with the size of the block.

A von-Neumann-like photonic processor and its application in studying quantum signature of chaos

Photonic quantum computation plays an important role and offers unique advantages. Two decades after the milestone work of Knill-Laflamme-Milburn, various architectures of photonic processors have been proposed, and quantum advantage over classical computers has also been demonstrated. It is now the opportune time to apply this technology to real-world applications. However, at current technology level, this aim is restricted by either programmability in bulk optics or loss in integrated optics for the existing architectures of processors, for which the resource cost is also a problem. Here we present a von-Neumann-like architecture based on temporal-mode encoding and looped structure on table, which is capable of multimode-universal programmability, resource-efficiency, phase-stability and software-scalability. In order to illustrate these merits, we execute two different programs with varying resource requirements on the same processor, to investigate quantum signature of chaos from two aspects: the signature behaviors exhibited in phase space (13 modes), and the Fermi golden rule which has not been experimentally studied in quantitative way before (26 modes). The maximal program contains an optical interferometer network with 1694 freely-adjustable phases. Considering current state-of-the-art, our architecture stands as the most promising candidate for real-world applications.

Prethermal Stability of Eigenstates under High Frequency Floquet Driving

Systems subject to high-frequency driving exhibit Floquet prethermalization, that is, they heat exponentially slowly on a timescale that is large in the drive frequency, τ_{h}∼exp(ω). Nonetheless, local observables can decay much faster via energy conserving processes, which are expected to cause a rapid decay in the fidelity of an initial state. Here we show instead that the fidelities of eigenstates of the time-averaged Hamiltonian, H_{0}, display an exponentially long lifetime over a wide range of frequencies-even as generic initial states decay rapidly. When H_{0} has quantum scars, or highly excited eigenstates of low entanglement, this leads to long-lived nonthermal behavior of local observables in certain initial states. We present a two-channel theory describing the fidelity decay time τ_{f}: the interzone channel causes fidelity decay through energy absorption, i.e., coupling across Floquet zones, and ties τ_{f} to the slow heating timescale, while the intrazone channel causes hybridization between states in the same Floquet zone. Our work informs the robustness of experimental approaches for using Floquet engineering to generate interesting many-body Hamiltonians, with and without scars.

Quantum many-body simulations on digital quantum computers: State-of-the-art and future challenges

Simulating quantum many-body systems is a key application for emerging quantum processors. While analog quantum simulation has already demonstrated quantum advantage, its digital counterpart has recently become the focus of intense research interest due to the availability of devices that aim to realize general-purpose quantum computers. In this perspective, we give a selective overview of the currently pursued approaches, review the advances in digital quantum simulation by comparing non-variational with variational approaches and identify hardware and algorithmic challenges. Based on this review, the question arises: What are the most promising problems that can be tackled with digital quantum simulation? We argue that problems of a qualitative nature are much more suitable for near-term devices then approaches aiming purely for a quantitative accuracy improvement.

Cavity-mediated long-range interactions in levitated optomechanics

The ability to engineer cavity-mediated interactions has emerged as a powerful tool for the generation of non-local correlations and the investigation of non-equilibrium phenomena in many-body systems. Levitated optomechanical systems have recently entered the multiparticle regime, which promises the use of arrays of strongly coupled massive oscillators to explore complex interacting systems and sensing. Here we demonstrate programmable cavity-mediated interactions between nanoparticles in vacuum by combining advances in multiparticle optical levitation and cavity-based quantum control. The interaction is mediated by photons scattered by spatially separated particles in a cavity, resulting in strong coupling that is long-range in nature. We investigate the scaling of the interaction strength with cavity detuning and interparticle separation and demonstrate the tunability of interactions between different mechanical modes. Our work will enable the exploration of many-body effects in nanoparticle arrays with programmable cavity-mediated interactions, generating entanglement of motion, and the use of interacting particle arrays for optomechanical sensing.

Many-body quantum chaos in mixtures of multiple species

We study spectral correlations in many-body quantum mixtures of fermions, bosons, and qubits with periodically kicked spreading and mixing of species. We take two types of mixing, namely, Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi, respectively, satisfying and breaking the conservation of a total number of species. We analytically derive the generating Hamiltonians whose spectral properties determine the spectral form factor in the leading order. We further analyze the system-size (L) scaling of Thouless time t^{*}, beyond which the spectral form factor follows the prediction of random matrix theory. The L dependence of t^{*} crosses over from lnL to L^{2} with an increasing Jaynes-Cummings mixing between qubits and fermions or bosons in a finite-size chain, and it finally settles to t^{*}∝O(L^{2}) in the thermodynamic limit for any mixing strength. The Rabi mixing between qubits and fermions leads to t^{*}∝O(lnL), previously predicted for single species of qubits or fermions without total-number conservation.

Ergodicity breaking from Rydberg clusters in a driven-dissipative many-body system

It is challenging to probe ergodicity breaking trends of a quantum many-body system when dissipation inevitably damages quantum coherence originated from coherent coupling and dispersive two-body interactions. Rydberg atoms provide a test bed to detect emergent exotic many-body phases and nonergodic dynamics where the strong Rydberg atom interaction competes with and overtakes dissipative effects even at room temperature. Here, we report experimental evidence of a transition from ergodic toward ergodic breaking dynamics in driven-dissipative Rydberg atomic gases. The broken ergodicity is featured by the long-time phase oscillation, which is attributed to the formation of Rydberg excitation clusters in limit cycle phases. The broken symmetry in the limit cycle is a direct manifestation of many-body collective effects, which is verified experimentally by tuning atomic densities. The reported result reveals that Rydberg many-body systems are a promising candidate to probe ergodicity breaking dynamics, such as limit cycles, and enable the benchmark of nonequilibrium phase transition.

Engineering Artificial Atomic Systems of Giant Electric Dipole Moment

The electric dipole moment (EDM) plays a crucial role in determining the interaction strength of an atom with electric fields, making it paramount to quantum technologies based on coherent atomic control. We propose a scheme for engineering the potential in a Paul trap to realize a two-level quantum system with a giant EDM formed by the motional states of a trapped electron. We show that, under realistic experimental conditions, our system exhibits enhanced EDMs compared to those attainable with Rydberg atoms, serving as a complementary counterpart in the megahertz (MHz) resonance-frequency range. Furthermore, we show that such artificial atomic dipoles can be efficiently initialized, read out, and coherently controlled, thereby providing a potential platform for quantum technologies such as ultrahigh-sensitivity electric-field sensing.

Accreditation of analogue quantum simulators

We present an accreditation protocol for analogue, i.e., continuous-time, quantum simulators. For a given simulation task, it provides an upper bound on the variation distance between the probability distributions at the output of an erroneous and error-free analogue quantum simulator. As its overheads are independent of the size and nature of the simulation, the protocol is ready for immediate usage and practical for the long term. It builds on the recent theoretical advances of strongly universal Hamiltonians and quantum accreditation as well as experimental progress toward the realization of programmable hybrid analogue-digital quantum simulators.

Enhanced many-body localization in a kinetically constrained model

In the study of the thermalization of closed quantum systems, the role of kinetic constraints on the temporal dynamics and the eventual thermalization is attracting significant interest. Kinetic constraints typically lead to long-lived metastable states depending on initial conditions. We consider a model of interacting hardcore bosons with an additional kinetic constraint that was originally devised to capture glassy dynamics at high densities. As a main result, we demonstrate that the system is highly prone to localization in the presence of uncorrelated disorder. Adding disorder quickly triggers long-lived dynamics as evidenced in the time evolution of density autocorrelations. Moreover, the kinetic constraint favors localization also in the eigenstates, where a finite-size transition to a many-body localized phase occurs for much lower disorder strengths than for the same model without a kinetic constraint. Our work sheds light on the intricate interplay of kinetic constraints and localization and may provide additional control over many-body localized phases in the time domain.

Active Suppression of Quantum Dephasing in Resonantly Driven Ensembles

We have used quantum control to suppress the impact of random atom positions on coherent population transfer within atom pairs, enabling the observation of dipole-dipole driven Rabi oscillations in a Rydberg gas with hundreds of atoms. The method exploits the reduced coupling-strength sensitivity of the off-resonant Rabi frequency, and coherently amplifies the achievable population transfer in analogy to quasi-phase-matching in nonlinear optics. Simulations reproduce the experimental results and demonstrate the potential benefits of the technique to other many-body quantum control applications.

Classical route to ergodicity and scarring in collective quantum systems

Ergodicity, a fundamental concept in statistical mechanics, is not yet a fully understood phenomena for closed quantum systems, particularly its connection with the underlying chaos. In this review, we consider a few examples of collective quantum systems to unveil the intricate relationship of ergodicity as well as its deviation due to quantum scarring phenomena with their classical counterpart. A comprehensive overview of classical and quantum chaos is provided, along with the tools essential for their detection. Furthermore, we survey recent theoretical and experimental advancements in the domain of ergodicity and its violations. This review aims to illuminate the classical perspective of quantum scarring phenomena in interacting quantum systems.

Quantum Scars and Regular Eigenstates in a Chaotic Spinor Condensate

Quantum many-body scars consist of a few low-entropy eigenstates in an otherwise chaotic many-body spectrum, and can weakly break ergodicity resulting in robust oscillatory dynamics. The notion of quantum many-body scars follows the original single-particle scars introduced within the context of quantum billiards, where scarring manifests in the form of a quantum eigenstate concentrating around an underlying classical unstable periodic orbit. A direct connection between these notions remains an outstanding problem. Here, we study a many-body spinor condensate that, owing to its collective interactions, is amenable to the diagnostics of scars. We characterize the system's rich dynamics, spectrum, and phase space, consisting of both regular and chaotic states. The former are low in entropy, violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, and can be traced back to integrable effective Hamiltonians, whereas most of the latter are scarred by the underlying semiclassical unstable periodic orbits, while satisfying the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We outline an experimental proposal to probe our theory in trapped spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates.

Quantum state complexity meets many-body scars

Scar eigenstates in a many-body system refers to a small subset of non-thermal finite energy density eigenstates embedded into an otherwise thermal spectrum. This novel non-thermal behaviour has been seen in recent experiments simulating a one-dimensional PXP model with a kinetically-constrained local Hilbert space realised by a chain of Rydberg atoms. We probe these small sets of special eigenstates starting from particular initial states by computing the spread complexity associated to time evolution of the PXP hamiltonian. Since the scar subspace in this model is embedded only loosely, the scar states form a weakly broken representation of the Lie algebra. We demonstrate why a careful usage of the forward scattering approximation (FSA), instead of any other method, is required to extract the most appropriate set of Lanczos coefficients in this case as the consequence of this approximate symmetry. Only such a method leads to a well defined notion of a closed Krylov subspace and consequently, that of spread complexity. We show this using three separate initial states, namely|Z2⟩,|Z3⟩and the vacuum state, due to the disparate classes of scar states hosted by these sectors. We also discuss systematic methods of remedying the imperfections in the FSA setup stemming from these approximate symmetries.

Disorder-tunable entanglement at infinite temperature

Emerging quantum technologies hold the promise of unravelling difficult problems ranging from condensed matter to high-energy physics while, at the same time, motivating the search for unprecedented phenomena in their setting. Here, we use a custom-built superconducting qubit ladder to realize non-thermalizing states with rich entanglement structures in the middle of the energy spectrum. Despite effectively forming an "infinite" temperature ensemble, these states robustly encode quantum information far from equilibrium, as we demonstrate by measuring the fidelity and entanglement entropy in the quench dynamics of the ladder. Our approach harnesses the recently proposed type of non-ergodic behavior known as "rainbow scar," which allows us to obtain analytically exact eigenfunctions whose ergodicity-breaking properties can be conveniently controlled by randomizing the couplings of the model without affecting their energy. The on-demand tunability of quantum correlations via disorder allows for in situ control over ergodicity breaking, and it provides a knob for designing exotic many-body states that defy thermalization.

Dynamical Localization Transition of String Breaking in Quantum Spin Chains

The fission of a string connecting two charges is an astounding phenomenon in confining gauge theories. The dynamics of this process have been studied intensively in recent years, with plenty of numerical results yielding a dichotomy: the confining string can decay relatively fast or persist up to extremely long times. Here, we put forward a dynamical localization transition as the mechanism underlying this dichotomy. To this end, we derive an effective string breaking description in the light-meson sector of a confined spin chain and show that the problem can be regarded as a dynamical localization transition in Fock space. Fast and suppressed string breaking dynamics are identified with delocalized and localized behavior, respectively. We then provide a further reduction of the dynamical string breaking problem onto a quantum impurity model, where the string is represented as an "impurity" immersed in a meson bath. It is shown that this model features a localization-delocalization transition, giving a general and simple physical basis to understand the qualitatively distinct string breaking regimes. These findings are directly relevant for a wider class of confining lattice models in any dimension and could be realized on present-day Rydberg quantum simulators.

Quantum Phases from Competing Van der Waals and Dipole-Dipole Interactions of Rydberg Atoms

Competing short- and long-range interactions represent distinguished ingredients for the formation of complex quantum many-body phases. Their study is hard to realize with conventional quantum simulators. In this regard, Rydberg atoms provide an exception as their excited manifold of states have both density-density and exchange interactions whose strength and range can vary considerably. Focusing on one-dimensional systems, we leverage the Van der Waals and dipole-dipole interactions of the Rydberg atoms to obtain the zero-temperature phase diagram for a uniform chain and a dimer model. For the uniform chain, we can influence the boundaries between ordered phases and a Luttinger liquid phase. For the dimerized case, a new type of bond-order-density-wave phase is identified. This demonstrates the versatility of the Rydberg platform in studying physics involving short- and long-ranged interactions simultaneously.

Graph-|Q⟩⟨C|: A Quantum Algorithm with Reduced Quantum Circuit Depth for Electronic Structure

The accurate determination of chemical properties is known to have a critical impact on multiple fundamental chemical problems but is deeply hindered by the steep algebraic scaling of electron correlation calculations and the exponential scaling of quantum nuclear dynamics. With the advent of new quantum computing hardware and associated developments in creating new paradigms for quantum software, this avenue has been recognized as perhaps one way to address exponentially complex challenges in quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics. In this paper, we discuss a new approach to drastically reduce the quantum circuit depth (by several orders of magnitude) and help improve the accuracy in the quantum computation of electron correlation energies for large molecular systems. The method is derived from a graph-theoretic approach to molecular fragmentation and enables us to create a family of projection operators that decompose quantum circuits into separate unitary processes. Some of these processes can be treated on quantum hardware and others on classical hardware in a completely asynchronous and parallel fashion. Numerical benchmarks are provided through the computation of unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles (UCCSD) energies for medium-sized protonated and neutral water clusters using the new quantum algorithms presented here.

Sunburst quantum Ising model under interaction quench: Entanglement and role of initial state coherence

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of an isolated bipartite quantum system, the sunburst quantum Ising model, under interaction quench. The prequench limit of this model is two noninteracting integrable systems, namely a transverse Ising chain and finite number of isolated qubits. As a function of interaction strength, the spectral fluctuation property goes from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson statistics. We chose entanglement entropy as a probe to study the approach to thermalization or lack of it in postquench dynamics. In the near-integrable limit, as expected, the linear entropy displays oscillatory behavior, while in the chaotic limit it saturates. Along with the chaotic nature of the time evolution generator, we show the importance of the role played by the coherence of the initial state in deciding the nature of thermalization. We further show that these findings are general by replacing the Ising ring with a disordered XXZ model with disorder strength putting it in the many-body localized phase.

Shadow Tomography from Emergent State Designs in Analog Quantum Simulators

We introduce a method that allows one to infer many properties of a quantum state-including nonlinear functions such as Rényi entropies-using only global control over the constituent degrees of freedom. In this protocol, the state of interest is first entangled with a set of ancillas under a fixed global unitary, before projective measurements are made. We show that when the unitary is sufficiently entangling, a universal relationship between the statistics of the measurement outcomes and properties of the state emerges, which can be connected to the recently discovered phenomeonon of emergent quantum state designs in chaotic systems. Thanks to this relationship, arbitrary observables can be reconstructed using the same number of experimental repetitions that would be required in classical shadow tomography [Huang et al., Nat. Phys. 16, 1050 (2020)NPAHAX1745-247310.1038/s41567-020-0932-7]. Unlike previous approaches to shadow tomography, our protocol can be implemented using only global Hamiltonian evolution, as opposed to qubit-selective logic gates, which makes it particularly well suited to analog quantum simulators, including ultracold atoms in optical lattices and arrays of Rydberg atoms.

Highly-excited Rydberg excitons in synthetic thin-film cuprous oxide

Cuprous oxide ([Formula: see text]) has recently emerged as a promising material in solid-state quantum technology, specifically for its excitonic Rydberg states characterized by large principal quantum numbers (n). The significant wavefunction size of these highly-excited states (proportional to [Formula: see text]) enables strong long-range dipole-dipole (proportional to [Formula: see text]) and van der Waals interactions (proportional to [Formula: see text]). Currently, the highest-lying Rydberg states are found in naturally occurring [Formula: see text]. However, for technological applications, the ability to grow high-quality synthetic samples is essential. The fabrication of thin-film [Formula: see text] samples is of particular interest as they hold potential for observing extreme single-photon nonlinearities through the Rydberg blockade. Nevertheless, due to the susceptibility of high-lying states to charged impurities, growing synthetic samples of sufficient quality poses a substantial challenge. This study successfully demonstrates the CMOS-compatible synthesis of a [Formula: see text] thin film on a transparent substrate that showcases Rydberg excitons up to [Formula: see text] which is readily suitable for photonic device fabrications. These findings mark a significant advancement towards the realization of scalable and on-chip integrable Rydberg quantum technologies.

Erasure conversion in a high-fidelity Rydberg quantum simulator

Minimizing and understanding errors is critical for quantum science, both in noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices1 and for the quest towards fault-tolerant quantum computation2,3. Rydberg arrays have emerged as a prominent platform in this context4 with impressive system sizes5,6 and proposals suggesting how error-correction thresholds could be significantly improved by detecting leakage errors with single-atom resolution7,8, a form of erasure error conversion9-12. However, two-qubit entanglement fidelities in Rydberg atom arrays13,14 have lagged behind competitors15,16 and this type of erasure conversion is yet to be realized for matter-based qubits in general. Here we demonstrate both erasure conversion and high-fidelity Bell state generation using a Rydberg quantum simulator5,6,17,18. When excising data with erasure errors observed via fast imaging of alkaline-earth atoms19-22, we achieve a Bell state fidelity of [Formula: see text], which improves to [Formula: see text] when correcting for remaining state-preparation errors. We further apply erasure conversion in a quantum simulation experiment for quasi-adiabatic preparation of long-range order across a quantum phase transition, and reveal the otherwise hidden impact of these errors on the simulation outcome. Our work demonstrates the capability for Rydberg-based entanglement to reach fidelities in the 0.999 regime, with higher fidelities a question of technical improvements, and shows how erasure conversion can be utilized in NISQ devices. These techniques could be translated directly to quantum-error-correction codes with the addition of long-lived qubits7,22-24.

A universal programmable Gaussian boson sampler for drug discovery

Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) has the potential to solve complex graph problems, such as clique finding, which is relevant to drug discovery tasks. However, realizing the full benefits of quantum enhancements requires large-scale quantum hardware with universal programmability. Here we have developed a time-bin-encoded GBS photonic quantum processor that is universal, programmable and software-scalable. Our processor features freely adjustable squeezing parameters and can implement arbitrary unitary operations with a programmable interferometer. Leveraging our processor, we successfully executed clique finding on a 32-node graph, achieving approximately twice the success probability compared to classical sampling. As proof of concept, we implemented a versatile quantum drug discovery platform using this GBS processor, enabling molecular docking and RNA-folding prediction tasks. Our work achieves GBS circuitry with its universal and programmable architecture, advancing GBS toward use in real-world applications.

Violation of Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis in Quantum Field Theories with Higher-Form Symmetry

We elucidate how the presence of higher-form symmetries affects the dynamics of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. Under reasonable assumptions, we analytically show that a p-form symmetry in a (d+1)-dimensional quantum field theory leads to the breakdown of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for many nontrivial (d-p)-dimensional observables. For discrete higher-form (i.e., p≥1) symmetry, this indicates the absence of thermalization for observables that are nonlocal but much smaller than the whole system size without any local conserved quantities. We numerically demonstrate this argument for the (2+1)-dimensional Z_{2} lattice gauge theory. While local observables such as the plaquette operator thermalize even for mixed symmetry sectors, the nonlocal observable exciting a magnetic dipole instead relaxes to the generalized Gibbs ensemble that takes account of the Z_{2} one-form symmetry.

Picosecond-Scale Ultrafast Many-Body Dynamics in an Ultracold Rydberg-Excited Atomic Mott Insulator

We report the observation and control of ultrafast many-body dynamics of electrons in ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms, spatially ordered in a three-dimensional Mott insulator (MI) with unity filling in an optical lattice. By mapping out the time-domain Ramsey interferometry in the picosecond timescale, we can deduce entanglement growth indicating the emergence of many-body correlations via dipolar forces. We analyze our observations with different theoretical approaches and find that the semiclassical model breaks down, thus indicating that quantum fluctuations play a decisive role in the observed dynamics. Combining picosecond Rydberg excitation with MI lattice thus provides a platform for simulating nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated systems in synthetic ultracold atomic crystals, such as in a metal-like quantum gas regime.

Reviving product states in the disordered Heisenberg chain

When a generic quantum system is prepared in a simple initial condition, it typically equilibrates toward a state that can be described by a thermal ensemble. A known exception is localized systems that are non-ergodic and do not thermalize; however, local observables are still believed to become stationary. Here we demonstrate that this general picture is incomplete by constructing product states that feature periodic high-fidelity revivals of the full wavefunction and local observables that oscillate indefinitely. The system neither equilibrates nor thermalizes. This is analogous to the phenomenon of weak ergodicity breaking due to many-body scars and challenges aspects of the current phenomenology of many-body localization, such as the logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy. To support our claim, we combine analytic arguments with large-scale tensor network numerics for the disordered Heisenberg chain. Our results hold for arbitrarily long times in chains of 160 sites up to machine precision.

Benchmarking Quantum Simulators Using Ergodic Quantum Dynamics

We propose and analyze a sample-efficient protocol to estimate the fidelity between an experimentally prepared state and an ideal target state, applicable to a wide class of analog quantum simulators without advanced spatiotemporal control. Our protocol relies on universal fluctuations emerging from generic Hamiltonian dynamics, which we discover in the present work. It does not require fine-tuned control over state preparation, quantum evolution, or readout capability, while achieving near optimal sample complexity: a percent-level precision is obtained with ∼10^{3} measurements, independent of system size. Furthermore, the accuracy of our fidelity estimation improves exponentially with increasing system size. We numerically demonstrate our protocol in a variety of quantum simulator platforms, including quantum gas microscopes, trapped ions, and Rydberg atom arrays. We discuss applications of our method for tasks such as multiparameter estimation of quantum states and processes.

Embedding Semiclassical Periodic Orbits into Chaotic Many-Body Hamiltonians

Protecting coherent quantum dynamics from chaotic environment is key to realizations of fragile many-body phenomena and their applications in quantum technology. We present a general construction that embeds a desired periodic orbit into a family of nonintegrable many-body Hamiltonians, whose dynamics is otherwise chaotic. Our construction is based on time-dependent variational principle that projects quantum dynamics onto a manifold of low-entangled states, and it complements earlier approaches for embedding nonthermal eigenstates, known as quantum many-body scars, into thermalizing spectra. By designing terms that suppress "leakage" of the dynamics outside the variational manifold, we engineer families of Floquet models that host exact scarred dynamics, as we illustrate using a driven Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model and a recent experimental realization of scars in a dimerized superconducting qubit chain.

Universality of Critical Dynamics with Finite Entanglement

When a system is swept through a quantum critical point, the quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism makes universal predictions for quantities such as the number and energy of excitations produced. This mechanism is now being used to obtain critical exponents on emerging quantum computers and emulators, which in some cases can be compared to matrix product state (MPS) numerical studies. However, the mechanism is modified when the divergence of entanglement entropy required for a faithful description of many quantum critical points is not fully captured by the experiment or classical calculation. In this Letter, we study how low-energy dynamics of quantum systems near criticality are modified by finite entanglement, using conformally invariant critical points described approximately by a MPS as an example. We derive that the effect of finite entanglement on a Kibble-Zurek process is captured by a dimensionless scaling function of the ratio of two length scales, one determined dynamically and one by the entanglement restriction. Numerically we confirm first that dynamics at finite bond dimension χ is independent of the algorithm chosen, then obtain scaling collapses for sweeps in the transverse field Ising model and the three-state Potts model. Our result establishes the precise role played by entanglement in time-dependent critical phenomena and has direct implications for quantum state preparation and classical simulation of quantum states.

Entanglement in the quantum phases of an unfrustrated Rydberg atom array

Recent experimental advances have stimulated interest in the use of large, two-dimensional arrays of Rydberg atoms as a platform for quantum information processing and to study exotic many-body quantum states. However, the native long-range interactions between the atoms complicate experimental analysis and precise theoretical understanding of these systems. Here we use new tensor network algorithms capable of including all long-range interactions to study the ground state phase diagram of Rydberg atoms in a geometrically unfrustrated square lattice array. We find a greatly altered phase diagram from earlier numerical and experimental studies, revealed by studying the phases on the bulk lattice and their analogs in experiment-sized finite arrays. We further describe a previously unknown region with a nematic phase stabilized by short-range entanglement and an order from disorder mechanism. Broadly our results yield a conceptual guide for future experiments, while our techniques provide a blueprint for converging numerical studies in other lattices.

Slow dynamics and nonergodicity of the bosonic quantum East model in the semiclassical limit

We study the unitary dynamics of the bosonic quantum East model, a kinetically constrained lattice model which generalizes the quantum East model to arbitrary occupation per site. We consider the semiclassical limit of large (but finite) site occupancy so that the dynamics is approximated by an evolution equation of the Gross-Pitaevskii kind. This allows us to numerically study in detail system sizes of hundreds of sites. Like in the spin-1/2 case, we find two dynamical phases, an active one of fast thermalization and an inactive one of slow relaxation and the absence of ergodicity on numerically accessible timescales. The location of this apparent ergodic to nonergodic transition coincides with the localization transition of the ground state. We further characterize states which are nonergodic on all timescales in the otherwise ergodic regime.

Landau-Forbidden Quantum Criticality in Rydberg Quantum Simulators

The Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory of phase transitions precludes a continuous transition between two phases that spontaneously break distinct symmetries. However, quantum mechanical effects can intertwine the symmetries, giving rise to an exotic phenomenon called deconfined quantum criticality (DQC). In this Letter, we study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional array of individually trapped neutral atoms interacting strongly via Rydberg states, and demonstrate through extensive numerical simulations that it hosts a variety of symmetry-breaking phases and their transitions including DQC. We show how an enlarged, emergent continuous symmetry arises at the DQCs, which can be experimentally observed in the joint distribution of two distinct order parameters, obtained within measurement snapshots in the standard computational basis. Our findings highlight quantum simulators of Rydberg atoms not only as promising platforms to experimentally realize such exotic phenomena, but also as unique ones allowing access to physical properties not obtainable in traditional experiments.

Interrelated Thermalization and Quantum Criticality in a Lattice Gauge Simulator

Gauge theory and thermalization are both topics of essential importance for modern quantum science and technology. The recently realized atomic quantum simulator for lattice gauge theories provides a unique opportunity for studying thermalization in gauge theory, in which theoretical studies have shown that quantum thermalization can signal the quantum phase transition. Nevertheless, the experimental study remains a challenge to accurately determine the critical point and controllably explore the thermalization dynamics due to the lack of techniques for locally manipulating and detecting matter and gauge fields. We report an experimental investigation of the quantum criticality in the lattice gauge theory from both equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermalization perspectives, with the help of the single-site addressing and atom-number-resolved detection capabilities. We accurately determine the quantum critical point and observe that the Néel state thermalizes only in the critical regime. This result manifests the interplay between quantum many-body scars, quantum criticality, and symmetry breaking.

Bichromatic Imaging of Single Molecules in an Optical Tweezer Array

We report on a novel bichromatic fluorescent imaging scheme for background-free detection of single CaF molecules trapped in an optical tweezer array. By collecting fluorescence on one optical transition while using another for laser cooling, we achieve an imaging fidelity of 97.7(2)% and a nondestructive detection fidelity of 95.5(6)%. Notably, these fidelities are achieved with a modest photon budget, suggesting that the method could be extended to more complex laser-coolable molecules with less favorable optical cycling properties. We also report on a framework and new methods to characterize various loss mechanisms that occur generally during fluorescent detection of trapped molecules, including two-photon decay and admixtures of higher excited states that are induced by the trapping light. In particular, we develop a novel method to dispersively measure transition matrix elements between electronically excited states. The method could also be used to measure arbitrarily small Franck-Condon factors between electronically excited states, which could significantly aid in ongoing efforts to laser cool complex polyatomic molecules.
