Ultralight crystalline hybrid composite material for highly efficient sequestration of radioiodine

Considering the importance of sustainable nuclear energy, effective management of radioactive nuclear waste, such as sequestration of radioiodine has inflicted a significant research attention in recent years. Despite the fact that materials have been reported for the adsorption of iodine, development of effective adsorbent with significantly improved segregation properties for widespread practical applications still remain exceedingly difficult due to lack of proper design strategies. Herein, utilizing unique hybridization synthetic strategy, a composite crystalline aerogel material has been fabricated by covalent stepping of an amino-functionalized stable cationic discrete metal-organic polyhedra with dual-pore containing imine-functionalized covalent organic framework. The ultralight hybrid composite exhibits large surface area with hierarchical macro-micro porosity and multifunctional binding sites, which collectively interact with iodine. The developed nano-adsorbent demonstrate ultrahigh vapor and aqueous-phase iodine adsorption capacities of 9.98 g.g-1 and 4.74 g.g-1, respectively, in static conditions with fast adsorption kinetics, high retention efficiency, reusability and recovery.

Covalent connections between metal-organic frameworks and polymers including covalent organic frameworks

Hybrid composite materials combining metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and polymers have emerged as a versatile platform for a broad range of applications. The crystalline, porous nature of MOFs and the flexibility and processability of polymers are synergistically integrated in MOF-polymer composite materials. Covalent bonds, which form between two distinct materials, have been extensively studied as a means of creating strong molecular connections to facilitate the dispersion of "hard" MOF particles in "soft" polymers. Numerous organic transformations have been applied to post-synthetically connect MOFs with polymeric species, resulting in a variety of covalently connected MOF-polymer systems with unique properties that are dependent on the characteristics of the MOFs, polymers, and connection modes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the development and strategies involved in preparing covalently connected MOFs and polymers, including recently developed MOF-covalent organic framework composites. The covalent bonds, grafting strategies, types of MOFs, and polymer backbones are summarized and categorized, along with their respective applications. We highlight how this knowledge can serve as a basis for preparing macromolecular composites with advanced functionality.

Molecular Diffusion in Nanoreactors' Pore Channel System: Measurement Techniques, Structural Regulation, and Catalytic Effects

Nanoreactors, as a new class of materials with highly enriched and ordered pore channel structures, can achieve special catalytic effects by precisely identifying and controlling the molecular diffusion behavior within the ordered pore channel system. Nanoreactors-driven molecular diffusion within the ordered pore channels can be highly dependent on the local microenvironment in the nanoreactors' pore channel system. Although the diffusion process of molecules within the ordered pore channels of nanoreactors is crucial for the regulation of catalytic behaviors, it has not yet been as clearly elucidated as it deserves to be in this study. In this review, fundamental theory and measurement techniques for molecular diffusion in the pore channel system of nanoreactors are presented, structural regulation strategies of pore channel parameters for controlling molecular diffusion are discussed, and the effects of molecular diffusion in the pore channel system on catalytic reactivity and selectivity are further analyzed. This article attempts to further develop the underlying theory of molecular diffusion within the theoretical framework of nanoreactor-driven catalysis, and the proposed perspectives may contribute to the rational design of advanced catalytic materials and the precise control of complex catalytic kinetics.

(Controlled) Free radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers: strategies, topological structures and biomedical applications

Free radical (co)polymerization (FRP/FRcP) of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) has emerged as a powerful strategy for the synthesis of chemically and topologically complex polymers due to its unique reaction kinetics, which enables the preparation of polymers with multiple functional groups and novel macromolecular structures. However, conventional FRP/FRcP of MVMs inevitably leads to insoluble crosslinked materials. Therefore, the development of advanced strategies for the controlled polymerization of MVMs is essential for the preparation of chemically and topologically complex polymers. In this review, we introduce the gelation mechanism of conventional FRP of MVMs and present the strategies of controlled polymerization of MVMs for the preparation of chemically and topologically complex polymers. We also discuss polymers with unique topologies synthesized by controlled polymerization of MVMs, such as crosslinked networks, (hyper)branched, star, cyclic, and single-chain cyclized/knotted structures. Finally, biomedical applications of various advanced polymeric materials prepared by controlled polymerization of MVMs are highlighted and the challenges is this field are discussed.

Construction of Metal-Organic Framework Films via Crosslinking-Induced Assembly

The construction of metal-organic framework (MOF) films is a crucial step for integrating them into technical applications. However, due to the crystallization nature, it is difficult to grow most MOFs spontaneously or process them into films. Here, a convenient strategy is demonstrated for constructing MOF films by using modulators to achieve homogeneous assembly of MOF clusters. Small clusters in the early growth steps of MOFs can be stabilized by modulators to form fluidic precursors with good processibility. Then, simple removal of modulators will trigger the crosslinking of MOF clusters and lead to the formation of continuous films. This strategy is universal for the fabrication of several types of MOF films with large scale and controllable thickness, which can be deposited on a variety of substrates as well as can be patterned in micro/nano resolution. Additionally, versatile composite MOF films can be easily synthesized by introducing functional materials during the crosslinking process, which brings them broader application prospects.

Polymerization within Nanoporous Anodized Alumina Oxide Templates (AAO): A Critical Survey

In the last few years, the polymerization of monomers within the nanocavities of porous materials has been thoroughly studied and developed, allowing for the synthesis of polymers with tailored morphologies, chemical architectures and functionalities. This is thus a subject of paramount scientific and technological relevance, which, however, has not previously been analyzed from a general perspective. The present overview reports the state of the art on polymerization reactions in spatial confinement within porous materials, focusing on the use of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. It includes the description of the AAO templates used as nanoreactors. The polymerization reactions are categorized based on the polymerization mechanism. Amongst others, this includes electrochemical polymerization, free radical polymerization, step polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). For each polymerization mechanism, a further subdivision is made based on the nature of the monomer used. Other aspects of "in situ" polymerization reactions in restricted AAO geometries include: conversion monitoring, kinetic studies, modeling and polymer characterization. In addition to the description of the polymerization process itself, the use of polymer materials derived from polymerization in AAO templates in nanotechnology applications, is also highlighted. Finally, the review is concluded with a general discussion outlining the challenges that remain in the field.

Acidic layer-enhanced nanoconfinement of anions in cylindrical pore of single-walled carbon nanotube

The adsorption of the nitrate ion by the cylindrical pore of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) was found to be aided by an acidic adsorbed layer. Adsorbed water in the vicinity of the pore wall can supply protons through ionization, forming the acidic layer, according to Raman spectra and results of solution pH fluctuations caused by ion species adsorption. Such an acidic adsorbed layer leads to surplus adsorption of anionic species where the adsorbed amount of nitrate ions is much larger than that of cations. Also, we could observe the Raman bands being assignable to the symmetrical stretching mode at an extremely high-frequency region for nano-restricted nitrate ions compared to any other bulk phases. The abnormal band shift of adsorbed nitrate ions indicates that the nitrate ions are confined in the pore under the effects of nanoconfinement by the pore and the strong interaction with the acidic layer in the pore. Our results warn that we have to construct the adsorption model of aqueous electrolytes confined in carbon pores by deliberating the acid layer formed by the adsorbed water.

Trap Inlaid Cationic Hybrid Composite Material for Efficient Segregation of Toxic Chemicals from Water

Metal-based oxoanions are potentially toxic pollutants that can cause serious water pollution. Therefore, the segregation of such species has recently received significant research attention. Even though several adsorbents have been employed for effective management of chemicals, their limited microporous nature along with non-monolithic applicability has thwarted their large-scale real-time application. Herein, we developed a unique anion exchangeable hybrid composite aerogel material (IPcomp-6), integrating a stable cationic metal-organic polyhedron with a hierarchically porous metal-organic gel. The composite scavenger demonstrated a highly selective and very fast segregation efficiency for various hazardous oxoanions such as, HAsO₄ ^2- , SeO₄ ^2- , ReO₄ ^- , CrO₄ ^2- , MnO₄ ^- , in water, in the presence of 100-fold excess of other coexisting anions. The material was able to selectively eliminate trace HAsO₄ ^2- even at low concentration to well below the As^V limit in drinking water defined by WHO.

Based On Confined Polymerization: In Situ Synthesis of PANI/PEEK Composite Film in One-Step

Confined polymerization is an effective method for precise synthesis, which can further control the micro-nano structure inside the composite material. Polyaniline (PANI)-based composites are usually prepared by blending and original growth methods. However, due to the strong rigidity and hydrogen bonding of PANI, the content of PANI composites is low and easy to agglomerate. Here, based on confined polymerization, it is reported that polyaniline /polyether ether ketone (PANI/PEEK) film with high PANI content is synthesized in situ by a one-step method. The micro-nano structure of the two polymers in the confined space is further explored and it is found that PANI grows in the free volume of the PEEK chain, making the arrangement of the PEEK chain more orderly. Under the best experimental conditions, the prepared 16 µm-PANI/PEEK film has a dielectric constant of 205.4 (dielectric loss 0.401), the 75 µm-PANI/PEEK film has a conductivity of 3.01×10-4 S m-1 . The prepared PANI/PEEK composite film can be further used as electronic packaging materials, conductive materials, and other fields, which has potential application prospects in anti-static, electromagnetic shielding materials, corrosion resistance, and other fields.

A mesoporous ionic solid with 272 AuI 6AgI 3CuII 3 complex cations in a super huge crystal lattice

Here, we report a unique mesoporous ionic solid (I) generated from a cationic Au^I₆Ag^I₃Cu^II₃ dodecanuclear complex with d-penicillamine depending on the homochirality and crystallization conditions. I crystallizes in the cubic space group of F4₁32 with an extremely large cell volume of 2 171 340 ų, containing 272 Au^I₆Ag^I₃Cu^II₃ complex cations in the unit cell. In I, the complex cations are connected to each other through CH⋯π interactions in a zeotype framework, the topology of which is the same as that of the metal–organic framework in MIL-101, with similar but much larger two types of polyhedral pores with internal diameters of 38.2 Å and 49.7 Å, which are occupied by counter-anions and water molecules. Due to the cationic nature of the framework, I undergoes quick, specific exchanges of counter-anions while retaining its single crystallinity. This study realized the creation of a non-covalent mesoporous framework from a single complex salt, providing a conceptual advance in solid chemistry and material science.

A non-MOF ionic solid having two types of polyhedral mesopores in a very large crystal lattice is generated from a cationic Au^I₆Ag^I₃Cu^II₃ complex with d-penicillamine, showing specific exchanges of counter-anions retaining its single crystallinity.

Role of Host-Guest Interaction in Understanding Polymerisation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks, MOFs, offer an effective template for polymerisation of polymers with precisely controlled structures within the sub-nanometre scales. However, synthetic difficulties such as monomer infiltration, detailed understanding of polymerisation mechanisms within the MOF nanochannels and the mechanism for removing the MOF template post polymerisation have prevented wide scale implementation of polymerisation in MOFs. This is partly due to the significant lack in understanding of the energetic and atomic-scale intermolecular interactions between the monomers and the MOFs. Consequently in this study, we explore the interaction of varied concentration of styrene, and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), at the surface and in the nanochannel of Zn₂(1,4-ndc)₂ (dabco), where 1,4-ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate and dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. Our results showed that the interactions between monomers are stronger in the nanochannels than at the surfaces of the MOF. Moreover, the MOF-monomer interactions are strongest in the nanochannels and increase with the number of monomers. However, as the number of monomers increases, the monomers turn to bind more strongly at the surface leading to a potential agglomeration of the monomers at the surface.

Selective Photodimerization in a Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework

For the most part, enzymes contain one active site wherein they catalyze in a serial manner chemical reactions between substrates both efficiently and rapidly. Imagine if a situation could be created within a chiral porous crystal containing trillions of active sites where substrates can reside in vast numbers before being converted in parallel into products. Here, we report how it is possible to incorporate 1-anthracenecarboxylate (1-AC^-) as a substrate into a γ-cyclodextrin-containing metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1), where the metals are K⁺ cations, prior to carrying out [4+4] photodimerizations between pairs of substrate molecules, affording selectively one of four possible regioisomers. One of the high-yielding regioisomers exhibits optical activity as a result of the presence of an 8:1 ratio of the two enantiomers following separation by high-performance liquid chromatography. The solid-state superstructure of 1-anthracenecarboxylate potassium salt (1-ACK), which is co-crystallized with γ-cyclodextrin, reveals that pairs of substrate molecules are not only packed inside tunnels between spherical cavities present in CD-MOF-1, but also stabilized-in addition to hydrogen-bonding to the C-2 and C-3 hydroxyl groups on the d-glucopyranosyl residues present in the γ-cyclodextrin tori-by combinations of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between the carboxyl groups in 1-AC^- and four K⁺ cations on the waistline between the two γ-cyclodextrin tori in the tunnels. These non-covalent bonding interactions result in preferred co-conformations that account for the highly regio- and enantioselective [4+4] cycloaddition during photoirradiation. Theoretical calculations, in conjunction with crystallography, support the regio- and stereochemical outcome of the photodimerization.

Anionic Polymerization in Porous Organic Frameworks: A Strategy to Fabricate Anchored Polymers and Copolymers

An anionic mechanism is used to create polymers and copolymers as confined to, or anchored to, high-surface-area porous nanoparticles. Linear polymers with soft and glassy chains, such as polyisoprene and polymethylmethacrylate, were produced by confined anionic polymerization in 3D networks of porous aromatic frameworks. Alternatively, multiple anions were generated on the designed frameworks which bear removal protons at selected positions, and initiate chain propagation, resulting in chains covalently connected to the 3D network. Such growth can continue outside the pores to produce polymer-matrix nanoparticles coated with anchored chains. Sequential reactions were promoted by the living character of this anionic propagation, yielding nanoparticles that were covered by a second polymer anchored by anionic block copolymerization. The intimacy of the matrix and the grown-in polymers was demonstrated by magnetization transfer across the interfaces in 2D ¹ H-¹³ C-HETCOR NMR spectra.

Conjugated crosslinks boost the conductivity and stability of a single crystalline metal-organic framework

A linker molecule with four pendant thiophene functions was crystallized with Zr(iv) ions to form a semiconductive porous coordination solid (1.1 × 10^-5 S cm^-1). Oxidative treatment with FeCl₃ guests then coupled the thiophene units to form conjugated bridges as covalent crosslinks. The resulting hybrid of a metal-organic framework and conjugated polymer featured robust crystalline order that withstood long-term air exposure and broad pH (from 0 to 12) conditions. Moreover, the homocoupled thiophene units, conjugated through sulfide links (-S-) with the linker backbone, afforded higher electronic conductivity (e.g., >2.2 × 10^-3 S cm^-1), which is characteristic of conductive polymer prototypes of polythiophene and polyphenylene sulfide. The crosslinked solid also exhibited proton conductivity that could be increased broadly upon H₂SO₄ treatment (e.g., from 5.0 × 10^-7 to 1.6 × 10^-3 S cm^-1).

Guest-dependent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in porous adamantane-bearing macrocycles

An adamantane-bearing macrocycle exhibited permanent intrinsic porosity and adsorption of small guests in single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashions. The guest capture resulted in the structural transformations of supramolecular organic frameworks.

Recent Advances in the Application of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Polymerization and Oligomerization Reactions

Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Destruction of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Positive and Negative Aspects of Stability and Lability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks, are well-known for their high crystallinity, high surface areas, and high component tunability. The stability of MOFs is a key prerequisite for their potential practical applications in areas including storage, separation, catalysis, and biomedicine since it is essential to guarantee the framework integrity during utilization. However, MOFs are prone to destruction under external stimuli, considerably hampering their commercialization. In this Review, we provide an overview of the situations where MOFs undergo destruction due to external stimuli such as chemical, thermal, photolytic, radiolytic, electronic, and mechanical factors and offer guidelines to avoid unwanted degradation happened to the framework. Furthermore, we discuss possible destruction mechanisms and their varying derived products. In particular, we highlight cases that utilize MOF instability to fabricate varying materials including hierarchically porous MOFs, monolayer MOF nanosheets, amorphous MOF liquids and glasses, polymers, metal nanoparticles, metal carbide nanoparticles, and carbon materials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the utilization of MOF destruction to develop advanced materials with a superior hierarchy for various applications.

Nanotrap Grafted Anion Exchangeable Hybrid Materials for Efficient Removal of Toxic Oxoanions from Water

Water pollution has attracted worldwide significant attention ever since the finding of its harmful effects on the whole ecosystem, including human health. Although several materials are known for selective removal of specific contaminants, designing a single material that can adsorb a variety of water contaminants is still a very challenging task due to a lack of proper design strategies. Herein, we have rationally designed a new class of anion exchangeable hybrid material where the nanosized cationic metal-organic polyhedra (MOP) are embedded inside a porous covalent organic framework (COF) with specific binding sites for toxic oxoanions. The resulting hybrid material exhibits very fast and selective sequestration of high as well as trace amount of a wide range of toxic oxoanions (HAsO₄ ^2-, SeO₄ ^2-, CrO₄ ^2-, ReO₄ ^-, and MnO₄ ^-) from the mixture of excessive (∼1000-fold) other interfering anions to well below the permissible drinking water limit. Moreover, the hybrid cationic nanotrap material can reduce the As(V) level from a highly contaminated groundwater sample to below the WHO permitted level.

Polymerization in MOF-Confined Nanospaces: Tailored Architectures, Functions, and Applications

This feature article describes recent trends and advances in structuring network polymers using a coordination-driven metal-organic framework (MOF)-based template approach to demonstrate the concept of crystal-controlled polymerization in confined nanospaces, forming tailored architectures ranging from simple linear one-dimensional macromolecules to tunable three-dimensional cross-linked network polymers and interwoven molecular architectures. MOF-templated network polymers combine the characteristics and advantages of crystalline MOFs (high porosity, structural regularity, and designability) with the intrinsic behaviors of soft polymers (flexibility, processability, stability, or biocompatibility) with widespread application possibilities and tunable properties. The article ends with a summary of the remaining challenges to be addressed, and future research opportunities in this field are discussed.

Thermal Elimination of Ethylene from Cyclobutyl Groups Characterized by X-ray Crystallography in a Metal-Organic Framework Matrix

Methods to synthesize and characterize aromatic molecules with vinyl substituents are sought after yet limited in the literature. Here, we introduce cyclobutyl groups into a metal-organic framework (MOF) matrix that are poised to produce ethylene upon heating. The expulsion of ethylene produces vinyl groups on an aromatic core, which are isolated by the crystalline matrix of the framework. This enables full characterization of the thermolysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Further, we modify the vinyl groups by a bromine addition reaction. Importantly, the two transformations happen in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner without changing the overall network structure of the parent framework. New insights into the structural and synthetic chemistry of this important class of compound are generated. Installing reactive vinyl tags in materials by the high temperature thermolysis of cyclobutyl groups is a powerful strategy for altering their physicochemical characteristics.

Neuron-Inspired Self-Healing Composites via Dynamic Construction of Polypyrrole-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes for Smart Physiochemical Sensing

Mimicking human skin's functions to develop intelligent materials have inspired extensive exploration in the design and synthesis of a novel device. However, how to simulate neuron function and integrate highly sensitive, positive perceptions and self-healing into one single material remains a challenge. Here, we prepared a recycled polyurethane (PU) with high tensile strength values (11.37 ± 0.03 MPa), high maximum elongation (1130 ± 11.59%), and high self-healing property (100% for 6 h at 25 °C) and a smart PU composite of polypyrrole-decorated carbon nanotubes with higher sensitivity. The smart composite can not only actively identify physical change such as strain, moisture, and temperature but also proactively detect various chemical environment changes such as acid, alkali, oxidant, and reductant (T: 25-90 °C, ΔR/R₀ values were 0.1-1.6; strain: 10-150%, ΔR/R₀ values were 2.5-27; 0.01-0.1 mol L^-1 oxidant solutions, ΔR/R₀ values were 0.66-0.75; 0.01-0.1 mol L^-1 reductant solutions, ΔR/R₀ values were 0.51-0.65; 0.1-0.5 mol L^-1 acid solutions, ΔR/R₀ values were 0.54-0.58; and 0.1-0.5 mol L^-1 alkali solutions, ΔR/R₀ values were 0.42-0.46). More importantly, the signal values of the smart composite can quickly return to the initial values after eliminating physical and chemical stimuli. The abovementioned features of the smart composite, the high physicochemical response, and significant restorability make it potentially possible to apply it in intelligent chemical manufacturing.

Unimolecularly thick monosheets of vinyl polymers fabricated in metal-organic frameworks

Polymers with two-dimensional (2D) network topologies are currently gaining significant attention due to their unique properties that originate from their regulated conformations. However, in contrast to conventional 1D- and 3D-networked macromolecules, the synthesis of such 2D networks provides challenges for polymer chemists because of the nature of the networking polymerisation reaction, which occurs in a spatially random fashion when conventional solution-phase synthesis is performed. Here we report a versatile synthesis of polymeric monosheets with unimolecularly thick networking architectures by exploiting the 2D nanospaces of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as reaction templates. Crosslinking radical polymerisation in the 2D nanospaces of pillared-layer-type MOFs affords monosheets of typical vinyl polymers and can be carried out on the gram scale. Remarkably, the prepared polymer monosheets are highly soluble in organic solvents and show atypical thermal and rheological properties that result from their 2D-regulated conformations that cannot be adopted by their 1D or 3D analogues.

Unlike 1D and 3D-networked macromolecules, the synthesis of 2D molecular networks is challenging because of the nature of the polymerisation reaction. Here the authors report the synthesis of polymeric monosheets with unimolecularly thick networks by exploiting the 2D nanospaces of metal–organic frameworks as reaction templates.

Controlling the alignment of 1D nanochannel arrays in oriented metal-organic framework films for host-guest materials design

Controlling the direction of molecular-scale pores enables the accommodation of guest molecular-scale species with alignment in the desired direction, allowing for the development of high-performance mechanical, thermal, electronic, photonic and biomedical organic devices (host-guest approach). Regularly ordered 1D nanochannels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated as superior hosts for aligning functional molecules and polymers. However, controlling the orientation of MOF films with 1D nanochannels at commercially relevant scales remains a significant challenge. Here, we report the fabrication of macroscopically oriented films of Cu-based pillar-layered MOFs having regularly ordered 1D nanochannels. The direction of 1D nanochannels is controllable by optimizing the crystal growth process; 1D nanochannels align either perpendicular or parallel to substrates, offering molecular-scale pore arrays for a macroscopic alignment of functional guest molecules in the desired direction. Due to the fundamental interest and widespread technological importance of controlling the alignment of functional molecules and polymers in a particular direction, orientation-controllable MOF films will open up the possibility of realising the potential of MOFs in advanced technologies.

Forensic investigation of arson residue by infrared and Raman spectroscopy: From conventional to non-destructive techniques

Arson can result in highly challenging and complicated crime scenes. Much physical evidence undergoes chemical degradation because of the destructive nature of fire, while accelerants either completely burn or evaporate, and may be present in traces within any of the decomposed materials. To identify the original material and the accelerant involved, it is necessary to use advanced analytical techniques. Gas chromatography, with different detectors, is one of the most frequently used instruments in fire debris and accelerant analysis. Among other instruments, capillary electrophoresis and laser-induced thermal desorption Fourier transform mass spectrometry are two major contributors. Vibrational spectroscopy, including infrared absorption and Raman scattering, is one of the major non-destructive tools for the analysis of evidence because of its advantages over other spectroscopic techniques. Most studies involving vibrational spectroscopy (i.e. infrared and Raman spectroscopy) have focused on the identification of commonly found household materials, while very few studies have considered the identification of ignitable liquids. This article reviews studies based on an analysis of fire debris and accelerants by vibrational spectroscopic techniques and considers the limitations and future perspectives of arson investigations in forensic science.

Complex polymer architectures through free-radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers

The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

MOF-Polymer Hybrid Materials: From Simple Composites to Tailored Architectures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are inherently crystalline, brittle porous solids. Conversely, polymers are flexible, malleable, and processable solids that are used for a broad range of commonly used technologies. The stark differences between the nature of MOFs and polymers has motivated efforts to hybridize crystalline MOFs and flexible polymers to produce composites that retain the desired properties of these disparate materials. Importantly, studies have shown that MOFs can be used to influence polymer structure, and polymers can be used to modulate MOF growth and characteristics. In this Review, we highlight the development and recent advances in the synthesis of MOF-polymer mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) and applications of these MMMs in gas and liquid separations and purifications, including aqueous applications such as dye removal, toxic heavy metal sequestration, and desalination. Other elegant ways of synthesizing MOF-polymer hybrid materials, such as grafting polymers to and from MOFs, polymerization of polymers within MOFs, using polymers to template MOFs, and the bottom-up synthesis of polyMOFs and polyMOPs are also discussed. This review highlights recent papers in the advancement of MOF-polymer hybrid materials, as well as seminal reports that significantly advanced the field.

Here we report a new synthetic strategy of a polyMOF consisting of a side chain ligand polymer. The polyMOF was consisting of a crystalline MOF-like structure in the polymer despite its film form.
