Synthesis and Self-assembly of Benzoperylene Benzimidazoles: Tunable Morphology with Aggregation Induced Enhanced Emission

Benzoperylene benzimidazoles ( BPBIs ) based π-systems are synthesized and their self-assembly in both non-polar and polar solvents is investigated. Due to the presence of donor and acceptor functional groups,  BPBIs  absorb light up to 600 nm and display red fluorescence (575-800 nm). Depending on the solvent and side chain,  BPBIs  self-assemble into various nanostructures such as nanoribbons, nanorods, nanofibers and nanoparticles. Notably, these ordered nanostructures are formed by  BPBIs  in both polar and non-polar solvents   without the aid of hydrogen bonding and amphiphilic interactions due to the presence of a large rigid π-system. Interestingly,  BPBIs  follow a weakly cooperative mechanism during the self-assembly. Moreover,  BPBIs  show aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in all the self-assembled nanostructures which is not common for rigid π-systems.

Visible-to-UV Photon Upconversion in Nanostructured Chromophoric Ionic Liquids

Visible-to-ultraviolet (vis-to-UV) triplet-triplet annihilation based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) is achieved in a non-volatile chromophoric ionic liquid (IL) for the first time. A novel IL is synthesized by combining UV-emitting anion 4-(2-phenyloxazol-5-yl)benzenesulfonate (PPOS) and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium cation (P66614). The nanostructured organization of chromophoric anions is demonstrated by synchrotron X-ray and optical measurements. When the IL is doped with a triplet sensitizer tris(2-phenylpyridinato)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3), the visible-to-UV TTA-UC with a relatively low threshold excitation intensity of 61 mW cm-2 is achieved. This is due to a large triplet diffusion coefficient in the IL (1.4×10-7 cm2 s-1) as well as a high absorption coefficient 15 cm-1 and a long PPOS triplet lifetime of 1.55 ms, all implemented in the condensed IL system. This work demonstrates the unique potential of ILs to control chromophore arrangements for desired functions.

Hooking Together Sigmoidal Monomers into Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers show great potential in the development of new materials because of their inherent recyclability and their self-healing and stimuli-responsive properties. Supramolecular conductive polymers are generally obtained by the assembly of individual aromatic molecules into columnar arrays that provide an optimal channel for electronic transport. A new approach is reported to prepare supramolecular polymers by hooking together sigmoidal monomers into 1D arrays of π-stacked anthracene and acridine units, which gives rise to micrometer-sized fibrils that show pseudoconductivities in line with other conducting materials. This approach paves the way for the design of new supramolecular polymers constituted by acene derivatives with enhanced excitonic and electronic transporting properties.

Viscoelastic Conjugated Polymer Fluids

The introduction of optoelectronic functions into viscoelastic polymers can yield highly sophisticated soft materials for biomedical devices and autonomous robotics. However, viscoelasticity and excellent optoelectronic properties are difficult to achieve because the presence of a large number of π-conjugated moieties drastically stiffens a polymer. Here, we report a variation of additive-free viscoelastic conjugated polymers (VE-CPs) at room temperature by using an intact π-conjugated backbone and bulky, yet flexible, alkyl side chains as "internal plasticizers." Some of these polymers exhibit gel- and elastomer-like rheological behaviors without cross-linking or entanglement. Furthermore, binary blends of these VE-CPs exhibit a never-seen-before dynamic miscibility with self-restorable and mechanically induced fluorescence color changes.

Added-Value Surfactants

Surfactants are ubiquitous in cellular membranes, detergents or as emulsification agents. Due to their amphiphilic properties, they cannot only mediate between two domains of very different solvent compatibility like water and organic but also show fascinating self-assembly features resulting in micelles, vesicles, or lyotropic liquid crystals. The current review article highlights some approaches towards the next generation surfactants, for example, those with catalytically active heads. Furthermore, it is shown that amphiphilic properties can be obtained beyond the classical hydrophobic-hydrophilic interplay, for instance with surfactants containing one molecular block with a special shape. Whereas, classical surfactants are static, researchers have become more interested in species that are able to change their properties depending on external triggers. The article discusses examples for surfactants sensitive to chemical (e.g., pH value) or physical triggers (temperature, electric and magnetic fields).

Superstructures with diverse morphologies and highly ordered fullerene C60 arrays from 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 adamantane-C60 hybrid molecules

Superstructures from fullerene C₆₀-containing compounds, especially those tethered to rigid functional groups with defined shapes, remain largely unexplored. Being the smallest diamondoid, adamantane (Ad) can be viewed as a promising building block for the construction of well-defined superstructures. Here, we report the syntheses of 1 : 1 (4a) and 2 : 1 (4b) Ad-C₆₀ hybrid molecules, which were then used to construct superstructures in binary solvent mixtures via a modified liquid/liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) method using CHCl₃ as a good solvent. Typically in the combination of DMSO/CHCl₃ with a final concentration (c_f) of 1.0 mmol L^-1, 4a successively forms spheres, plates, nanoflowers and plicated particles with increasing content of DMSO while 4b forms cuboid blocks and microparticles with hierarchically organized surfaces. Changing from DMSO to other poor solvents including acetone, MeOH and EtOAc leads to variations of the morphology of the superstructures for both 4a and 4b. At the nanometer length scale, 4a and 4b adopt different organizations within the superstructures. While 4a tends to self-organize into lamellae with highly ordered C₆₀ layers, the hexagonal phase is dominant in the superstructures formed by 4b. Wettability tests indicate that films formed by the superstructures of 4a and 4b show anti-wetting properties. Besides the solvent effect, the morphology of the superstructures can be also tuned by concentration. For example, when c_f is lowered to 0.5 mmol L^-1, a new form of superstructure, i.e., fibers, was detected for 4a. Our results also indicate that besides the solvent-induced aggregate transition, gravity-induced sedimentation and subsequent structure ripening can have a significant influence on the final morphology of the superstructures and the aggregate transition pathways.

N-Type Organic Thermoelectrics: Improved Power Factor by Tailoring Host-Dopant Miscibility

In this contribution, for the first time, the polarity of fullerene derivatives is tailored to enhance the miscibility between the host and dopant molecules. A fullerene derivative with a hydrophilic triethylene glycol type side chain (PTEG-1) is used as the host and (4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine n-DMBI) as the dopant. Thereby, the doping efficiency can be greatly improved to around 18% (<1% for a nonpolar reference sample) with optimized electrical conductivity of 2.05 S cm^-1 , which represents the best result for solution-processed fullerene derivatives. An in-depth microstructural study indicates that the PTEG-1 molecules readily form layered structures parallel to the substrate after solution processing. The fullerene cage plane is alternated by the triethylene glycol side chain plane; the n-DMBI dopants are mainly incorporated in the side chain plane without disturbing the π-π packing of PTEG-1. This new microstructure, which is rarely observed for codeposited thin films from solution, formed by PTEG-1 and n-DMBI molecules explains the increased miscibility of the host/dopant system at a nanoscale level and the high electrical conductivity. Finally, a power factor of 16.7 µW m^-1 K^-2 is achieved at 40% dopant concentration. This work introduces a new strategy for improving the conductivity of solution-processed n-type organic thermoelectrics.

A Guide to Design Functional Molecular Liquids with Tailorable Properties using Pyrene-Fluorescence as a Probe

Solvent-free, nonvolatile, room-temperature alkylated-π functional molecular liquids (FMLs) are rapidly emerging as a new generation of fluid matter. However, precision design to tune their physicochemical properties remains a serious challenge because the properties are governed by subtle π-π interactions among functional π-units, which are very hard to control and characterize. Herein, we address the issue by probing π-π interactions with highly sensitive pyrene-fluorescence. A series of alkylated pyrene FMLs were synthesized. The photophysical properties were artfully engineered with rational modulation of the number, length, and substituent motif of alkyl chains attached to the pyrene unit. The different emission from the excimer to uncommon intermediate to the monomer scaled the pyrene-pyrene interactions in a clear trend, from stronger to weaker to negligible. Synchronously, the physical nature of these FMLs was regulated from inhomogeneous to isotropic. The inhomogeneity, unexplored before, was thoroughly investigated by ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy techniques. The result provides a clearer image of liquid matter. Our methodology demonstrates a potential to unambiguously determine local molecular organizations of amorphous materials, which cannot be achieved by conventional structural analysis. Therefore this study provides a guide to design alkylated-π FMLs with tailorable physicochemical properties.

J-aggregation, its impact on excited state dynamics and unique solvent effects on macroscopic assembly of a core-substituted naphthalenediimide

Herein we reveal a straightforward supramolecular design for the H-bonding driven J-aggregation of an amine-substituted cNDI in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals sub-ps intramolecular electron transfer in isolated NDI molecules in a THF solution followed by a fast recombination process, while a remarkable extension of the excited state lifetime by more than one order of magnitude occurred in methylcyclohexane likely owing to an increased charge-separation as a result of better delocalization of the charge-separated states in J-aggregates. We also describe unique solvent-effects on the macroscopic structure and morphology. While J-aggregation with similar photophysical characteristics was noticed in all the tested aliphatic hydrocarbons, the morphology strongly depends on the "structure" of the solvents. In linear hydrocarbons (n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane or n-dodecane), formation of an entangled fibrillar network leads to macroscopic gelation while in cyclic hydrocarbons (methylcyclohexane or cyclohexane) although having a similar polarity, the cNDI exhibits nanoscale spherical particles. These unprecedented solvent effects were rationalized by establishing structure-dependent specific interactions of the solvent molecules with the cNDI which may serve as a general guideline for solvent-induced morphology-control of structurally related self-assembled materials.

Alkyl-π engineering in state control toward versatile optoelectronic soft materials

Organic π-conjugated molecules with extremely rich and tailorable electronic and optical properties are frequently utilized for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. To achieve high solubility for facile solution processing and desirable softness for flexible device fabrication, the rigid π units were in most cases attached by alkyl chains through chemical modification. Considerable numbers of alkylated-π molecular systems with versatile applications have been reported. However, a profound understanding of the molecular state control through proper alkyl chain substitution is still highly demanded because effective applications of these molecules are closely related to their physical states. To explore the underlying rule, we review a large number of alkylated-π molecules with emphasis on the interplay of van der Waals interactions (vdW) of the alkyl chains and π-π interactions of the π moieties. Based on our comprehensive investigations of the two interactions' impacts on the physical states of the molecules, a clear guidance for state control by alkyl-π engineering is proposed. Specifically, either with proper alkyl chain substitution or favorable additives, the vdW and π-π interactions can be adjusted, resulting in modulation of the physical states and optoelectronic properties of the molecules. We believe the strategy summarized here will significantly benefit the alkyl-π chemistry toward wide-spread applications in optoelectronic devices.

The present work reports facile synthesis of pyrene coupled coumarin derivatives which could form self-assembled molecular gel and nano-flakes. The nanomaterials obtained via a self-assembly process could be potentially used in fluorescence imaging applications.

Nanoporous carbon tubes from fullerene crystals as the π-electron carbon source

Here we report the thermal conversion of one-dimensional (1D) fullerene (C60) single-crystal nanorods and nanotubes to nanoporous carbon materials with retention of the initial 1D morphology. The 1D C60 crystals are heated directly at very high temperature (up to 2000 °C) in vacuum, yielding a new family of nanoporous carbons having π-electron conjugation within the sp(2)-carbon robust frameworks. These new nanoporous carbon materials show excellent electrochemical capacitance and superior sensing properties for aromatic compounds compared to commercial activated carbons.

Electronic and electrochemical properties as well as flowerlike supramolecular assemblies of fulleropyrrolidines bearing ester substituents with different alkyl chain lengths

Flowerlike supramolecular architectures, obtained from a series of energetically PCBM-like and high C₆₀ content (76–79%) fulleropyrrolidines FP1–FP4, were lamellar structures with alkyl chain length dependent thickness of a bilayer structure.
