Facile synthesis of ultrahigh-surface-area hollow carbon nanospheres for enhanced adsorption and energy storage

Shell Modulation of Hollow Metal Sulfide Nanocomposite for Stable Potassium Storage at Room and High Temperature

The large size of K-ion makes the pursuit of stable high-capacity anodes for K-ion batteries (KIBs) a formidable challenge, particularly for high temperature KIBs as the electrode instability becomes more aggravated with temperature climbing. Herein, we demonstrate that a hollow ZnS@C nanocomposite (h-ZnS@C) with a precise shell modulation can resist electrode disintegration to enable stable high-capacity potassium storage at room and high temperature. Based on a model electrode, we identify an interesting structure-function correlation of the h-ZnS@C: with an increase in the shell thickness, the cyclability increases while the rate and capacity decrease, shedding light on the design of high-performance h-ZnS@C anodes via engineering the shell thickness. Typically, the h-ZnS@C anode with a shell thickness of 60 nm can deliver an impressive comprehensive performance at room temperature; the h-ZnS@C with shell thickness increasing to 75 nm can achieve an extraordinary stability (88.6 % capacity retention over 450 cycles) with a high capacity (450 mAh g-1) and a superb rate even at an extreme temperature of 60 °C, which is much superior than those reported anodes. This contribution envisions new perspectives on rational design of functional metal sulfides composite toward high-performance KIBs with insights into the significant structure-function correlation.

Facile Fabrication of Hollow Nanoporous Carbon Architectures by Controlling MOF Crystalline Inhomogeneity for Ultra-Stable Na-Ion Storage

Hollow nanoporous carbon architectures (HNCs) present significant utilitarian value for a wide variety of applications. Facile and efficient preparation of HNCs has long been pursued but still remains challenging. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate that single-component metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) crystals, rather than the widely reported hybrid ones which necessitate tedious operations for preparation, could enable the facile and versatile syntheses of functional HNCs. By controlling the growth kinetics, the MOFs crystals (STU-1) are readily engineered into different shapes with designated styles of crystalline inhomogeneity. A subsequent one-step pyrolysis of these MOFs with intraparticle difference can induce a simultaneous self-hollowing and carbonization process, thereby producing various functional HNCs including yolk-shell polyhedrons, hollow microspheres, mesoporous architectures, and superstructures. Superior to the existing methods, this synthetic strategy relies only on the complex nature of single-component MOFs crystals without involving tedious operations like coating, etching, or ligand exchange, making it convenient, efficient, and easy to scale up. An ultra-stable Na-ion battery anode is demonstrated by the HNCs with extraordinary cyclability (93 % capacity retention over 8000 cycles), highlighting a high level of functionality of the HNCs.

Nitrogen-Containing Carbon Tubes Fabricated by Light Irradiation

Cotton-core/polypyrrole (PPy)-sheath fibers (cotton/PPy fibers) were synthesized by aqueous chemical oxidative seeded polymerization and were utilized as precursors for nitrogen-containing carbon (NCC) tubes. Irradiation of the cotton/PPy fibers with a near-infrared (NIR) laser heated them to approximately 300 °C due to light-to-heat photothermal conversion by the PPy, and the cotton core was thermally decomposed and vaporized. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed the formation of tubes with monodispersed diameters, and elemental microanalysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed that the PPy sheath was converted into NCC. Furthermore, sunlight also worked as the light source in fabricating the NCC tubes. The thicknesses of the tubes were controlled between 410 nm and 2.30 μm by tuning the PPy sheath thickness. The method developed in this study can be extended to other polymeric fibers, including acrylic and wool fibers. The shapes of the cross sections and surface nanomorphologies of the NCC tubes can be reflected in those of the polymer/PPy fibers.

Cation desolvation-induced capacitance enhancement in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)

Understanding the local electrochemical processes is of key importance for efficient energy storage applications, including electrochemical double layer capacitors. In this work, we studied the charge storage mechanism of a model material - reduced graphene oxide (rGO) - in aqueous electrolyte using the combination of cavity micro-electrode, operando electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and operando electrochemical dilatometry (ECD) tools. We evidence two regions with different charge storage mechanisms, depending on the cation-carbon interaction. Notably, under high cathodic polarization (region II), we report an important capacitance increase in Zn2+ containing electrolyte with minimum volume expansion, which is associated with Zn2+ desolvation resulting from strong electrostatic Zn2+-rGO interactions. These results highlight the significant role of ion-electrode interaction strength and cation desolvation in modulating the charging mechanisms, offering potential pathways for optimized capacitive energy storage. As a broader perspective, understanding confined electrochemical systems and the coupling between chemical, electrochemical and transport processes in confinement may open tremendous opportunities for energy, catalysis or water treatment applications in the future.

Synthesis of Monodisperse Mesoporous Carbon Spheres/EPDM Rubber Composites and Their Enhancement Mechanical Properties

Monodisperse mesoporous carbon spheres (MCS) were synthesized and their potential applications in ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) foam were evaluated. The obtained MCS exhibited a high specific surface area ranging from 621-to 735 m2/g along with large pore sizes. It was observed that the incorporation of MCS into EPDM foam rubber significantly enhances its mechanical properties. The prepared MCS-40 rubber composites exhibit the highest tear strength of 210 N/m and tensile strength of 132.72 kPa, surpassing those of other samples. The enhancement mechanism was further investigated by employing computer simulation technology. The pores within the MCS allowed for the infiltration of EPDM molecular chains, thereby strengthening the interaction forces between the filler and matrix. Moreover, a higher specific surface area resulted in greater adsorption of molecular chains onto the surface of these carbon spheres. This research offers novel insights for understanding the enhancement mechanism of monodisperse mesoporous particles/polymer composites (MCS/EPDM) and highlights their potential application in high-performance rubber composites.

Hybrid Carbon Nanospheres with Encapsulated (Bi)Metallic Nanocrystals as Lubricant Additives for Antiwear and Friction Reduction

Herein, the novel core-shell organo-inorganic hybrid carbon nanospheres with encapsulated ultrafine bimetal nanocrystals were successfully prepared by a one-pot domino drive synthesis combined with postcarbonization. The excellent properties of the metals such as high strength and thermal conductivity are retained, and the poor dispersion of the metal in the oil could be improved by encapsulating the metal in organic-inorganic hybrid carbon nanospheres. The vanadium and wolframium nanocrystals embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres (V/W@NCNs) manifested remarkable oil dispersity on account of the lipophilic organic phase of the carbon shell. It is worth noting that the as-obtained V/W@NCNs display better tribological properties compared with the base oil, such as a higher extreme pressure of 1250 N, a lower friction coefficient of about 0.09, and a significant reduction in wear volume of 91.5%, which are attributed to the robust protective film that was formed on the surface of the friction pair through mechanical deposition and physical and tribochemical reaction during the friction process.

Synthesis of multi-cavity mesoporous carbon nanospheres through solvent-induced self-assembly: Anode material for sodium-ion batteries with long-term cycle stability

Mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCSs) are extensively employed in energy storage applications due to their ordered pore size, large specific surface area (SSA), and abundant active sites, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance for sodium storage. However, challenges persist in achieving precise structural control and stable synthesis reactions for these MCSs. Additionally, employing MCSs with a larger SSA in sodium storage applications can lead to increased side reactions and potential structural instability. To address these issues, we propose a solvent-induced self-assembly method for obtaining high nitrogen-containing multi-cavity MCSs with reduced SSA. The morphology and SSA of the nanospheres can be precisely adjusted by regulating the reaction time. Introducing an amine-phenol bridging structure into the polymer system significantly bolsters the structural and morphological stability of the mesoporous materials. The performance of these novel nanospheres in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is remarkable, exhibiting excellent sodium storage capability and exceptional ultra-long cycle stability. At a rate of 0.1 A g-1, the nanospheres achieved a high reversible capacity of 252 mAh g-1, and even after 20,000 cycles at 5 A g-1, a specific capacity of 136 mAh g-1 was retained. In summary, our study presents a novel approach for synthesizing mesoporous carbon materials and offers valuable insights for sodium storage research, opening new possibilities for enhancing energy storage applications.

Hierarchical Hollow Carbon Particles with Encapsulation of Carbon Nanotubes for High Performance Supercapacitors

A novel and sustainable carbon-based material, referred to as hollow porous carbon particles encapsulating multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (CNTs@HPC), is synthesized for use in supercapacitors. The synthesis process involves utilizing LTA zeolite as a rigid template and dopamine hydrochloride (DA) as the carbon source, along with catalytic decomposition of methane (CDM) to simultaneously produce MWCNTs and COx -free H2 . The findings reveal a distinctive hierarchical porous structure, comprising macropores, mesopores, and micropores, resulting in a total specific surface area (SSA) of 913 m2  g-1 . The optimal CNTs@HPC demonstrates a specific capacitance of 306 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 . Moreover, this material demonstrates an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) that surpasses conventional capabilities by exhibiting additional pseudocapacitance characteristics. These properties are attributed to redox reactions facilitated by the increased charge density resulting from the attraction of ions to nickel oxides, which is made possible by the material's enhanced hydrophilicity. The heightened hydrophilicity can be attributed to the presence of residual silicon-aluminum elements in CNTs@HPC, a direct outcome of the unique synthesis approach involving nickel phyllosilicate in CDM. As a result of this synthesis strategy, the material possesses excellent conductivity, enabling rapid transportation of electrolyte ions and delivering outstanding capacitive performance.

Modulating the d-Band Center Enables Ultrafine Pt3 Fe Alloy Nanoparticles for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

By providing dual active sites to synergistically accelerate H2 O dissociation and H+ reduction, ordered intermetallic alloys usually show extraordinary performance for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, activated N-doped mesoporous carbon spheres supported intermetallic Pt3 Fe alloys (Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A), as a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for pH-universal HER, are reported. The Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A exhibits low overpotentials (η10 ) of 13, 29, and 48 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , 1.0 m KOH, and 1.0 m phosphate buffered solution (PBS), respectively, as well as robust stability to maintain the overall catalytic performances. Theoretical studies reveal that the strong Pt 5d-Fe 3d orbital electronic interactions negatively shift the d-band center (εd ) of Pt 5d orbital, resulting in reduced H* adsorption energy of Pt sites and enhanced acidic HER activity. With Pt and Fe acting as co-adsorption sites for H* and *OH intermediates, respectively, a low energy barrier is required for Pt3 Fe/NMCS-A to dissociate H2 O to afford H* intermediates, which greatly promotes the H* adsorption and H2 formation in alkaline and neutral conditions. The synthetic strategy is further extended to the synthesis of Pt3 Co and Pt3 Ni alloys with excellent HER activity in pH-universal electrolytes, demonstrating the great potential of these Pt-based alloys for practical applications.

Revealing the Adsorption Mechanisms of Methanol on Lithium-Doped Porous Carbon through Experimental and Theoretical Calculations

Previous reports have shown that it is difficult to improve the methanol adsorption performance of nitrogen and oxygen groups due to their low polarity. Here, we first prepared porous carbon with a high specific surface area and large pore volume using benzimidazole as a carbon precursor and KOH as an activating agent. Then, we improved the surface polarity of the porous carbon by doping with Lithium (Li) to enhance the methanol adsorption performance. The results showed that the methanol adsorption capacity of Li-doped porous carbon reached 35.4 mmol g-1, which increased by 57% compared to undoped porous carbon. Molecular simulation results showed that Li doping not only improved the methanol adsorption performance at low pressure, but also at relatively high pressure. This is mainly because Li-modified porous carbon has higher surface polarity than nitrogen and oxygen-modified surfaces, which can generate stronger electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we determined the adsorption energy, adsorption distance, and charge transfer between Li atom and methanol. Our results demonstrate that Li doping enhances the adsorption energy, reduces the adsorption distance, and increases the charge transfer in porous carbon. The mechanism of methanol adsorption by Li groups was revealed through experimental and theoretical calculations, providing a theoretical basis for the design and preparation of methanol adsorbents.

Wrinkled Hollow Carbon Spheres with Adjustable Diameter for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Creating more pleated and collapsed structures for carbon-based electrode materials is an important measure to enhance the performance of supercapacitors. Herein, a polymer formed by the aldimine reaction of terephthalaldehyde and aminopropyltriethoxysilane was utilized as the carbon source, and tetraethoxysilane was added as a silica additive to achieve the wrinkled structure on hollow carbon spheres. The silica had a significant modulating effect on the structure of the obtained wrinkled hollow carbon sphere (WHCS), which displayed a visible pleated structure, hollow structure, high specific surface area, and pore volume. As an electrode material for supercapacitors, WHCS exhibits excellent performance with a capacitance of 312 F ⋅ g-1 and remarkable cycle life stability, demonstrating its great potential for use in supercapacitors.

Caffeic Acid-Zinc Basic Salt/Chitosan Nanohybrid Possesses Controlled Release Properties and Exhibits In Vivo Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Caffeic acid (CA) exhibits a myriad of biological activities including cardioprotective action, antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. On the other hand, CA presents low water solubility and poor bioavailability, which have limited its use for therapeutic applications. The objective of this study was to develop a nanohybrid of zinc basic salts (ZBS) and chitosan (Ch) containing CA (ZBS-CA/Ch) and evaluate its anti-edematogenic and antioxidant activity in dextran and carrageenan-induced paw edema model. The samples were obtained by coprecipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and UV-visible spectroscopy. The release of caffeate anions from ZBS-CA and ZBS-CA/Ch is pH-dependent and is explained by a pseudo-second order kinetics model, with a linear correlation coefficient of R² ≥ 0.99 at pH 4.8 and 7.4. The in vivo pharmacological assays showed excellent anti-edematogenic and antioxidant action of the ZBS-CA/Ch nanoparticle with slowly releases of caffeate anions in the tissue, leading to a prolongation of CA-induced anti-edematogenic and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as improving its inhibition or sequestration antioxidant action toward reactive species. Overall, this study highlighted the importance of ZBS-CA/Ch as an optimal drug carrier.

Experimental and theoretical calculations insight into acetone adsorption by porous carbon at different pressures: Effects of pore structure and oxygen groups

The influence of different pore size and oxygen groups for porous carbons on acetone adsorption at different pressure was studied by using experimental data and theoretical calculation, and the results were applied to prepare carbon-based adsorbents with superior adsorption capacity. First, we successfully prepared five types of porous carbons with different gradient pore structure but similar oxygen contents (4.9 ± 0.25 at.%). We found that the acetone uptake at different pressure depends on the different pore sizes. Besides, we demonstrate how to accurately decompose the acetone adsorption isotherm into multiple sub-isotherms based on different pore sizes. Based on the isotherm decomposition method, the acetone adsorption at 18 kPa is mainly in the form of pore-filling adsorption in the pore size range of 0.6-2.0 nm. When the pore size is greater than 2 nm, the acetone uptake mainly depends on the surface area. Second, porous carbons with different oxygen content, similar surface area and pore structure were prepared to study the influence of oxygen groups on acetone adsorption. The results show that the acetone adsorption capacity is determined by the pore structure at relatively high pressure, and the oxygen groups only slightly increase the adsorption capacity. However, the oxygen groups can provide more active sites, thereby enhancing acetone adsorption at low pressure.

Versatile Magnetic Mesoporous Carbon Derived Nano-Adsorbent for Synchronized Toxic Metal Removal and Bacterial Disinfection from Water Matrices

Contamination of water resources by toxic metals and opportunistic pathogens remains a serious challenge. The development of nano-adsorbents with desired features to tackle this problem is a continuously evolving field. Here, magnetic mesoporous carbon nanospheres grafted by antimicrobial polyhexamethylene biguanidine (PHMB) are reported. Detailed mechanistic investigations reveal that the electrostatic stabilizer modified magnetic nanocore interfaced mesoporous shell can be programmatically regulated to tune the size and related morphological properties. The core-shell nano-adsorbent shows tailorable shell thickness (≈20-55 nm), high surface area (363.47 m² g^-1 ), pore volume (0.426 cm³ g^-1 ), radially gradient pores (11.26 nm), and abundant biguanidine functionality. Importantly, the nano-adsorbent has high adsorption capacity for toxic thallium (Tl(I) ions (≈559 mg g^-1 ), excellent disinfection against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (>99.99% at 2 and 2.5 µg mL^-1 ), ultrafast disinfection kinetics rate (>99.99% within ≈4 min), and remarkable regeneration capability when exposed to polluted water matrices. The Tl(I) removal is attributed to surface complexation and physical adsorption owing to open ended mesopores, while disinfection relies on contact of terminal biguanidines with phospholipid head groups of membrane. The significance of this work lies in bringing up effective synchronic water purification technology to combat pathogenic microorganisms and toxic metal.

Coupling of Oxygen Vacancies and Heterostructure on Fe3 O4 via an Anion Doping Strategy to Boost Catalytic Activity for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The sluggish reaction kinetics and severe shutting behaviors of sulfur cathodes are the major roadblocks to realizing the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries and need to be solved through designing/constructing rational sulfur hosts. Herein, an effective alternative material of Fe₃ O_{4- x} /FeP in-situ embedded in N-doped carbon-tube (Fe₃ O_{4- x} /FeP/NCT) is proposed. In this fabricated heterostructure, NCT skeleton works as a sulfur host provides physical barrier for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), while Fe₃ O_{4- x} /FeP heterostructure with abundant oxygen vacancies provides double active centers to simultaneously accelerate e^- /Li⁺ diffusion/transport kinetics and catalysis for LiPSs. Through the respective advantages, Fe₃ O_{4- x} /FeP/NCT exhibits synergy enhancement effect for restraining sulfur dissolution and enhancing its conversion kinetics. Furthermore, the promoted ion diffusion kinetics, enhanced electrical conductivity, and increased active sites of Fe₃ O_{4- x} /FeP/NCT are enabled by oxygen vacancies as well as the heterogeneous interfacial contact, which is clearly confirmed by experimental and first-principles calculations. By virtue of these superiorities, the constructed cathode shows excellent long-term cycling stability and a high-rate capability up to 10 C. Specially, a high areal capacity of 7.2 mAh cm^-2 is also achieved, holding great promise for utilization in advanced Li-S batteries in the future.

Highly-efficient peroxydisulfate activation by polyaniline-polypyrrole copolymers derived pyrolytic carbon for 2,4-dichlorophenol removal in water: Coupling mechanism of singlet oxygen and electron transfer

Carbonization of N-containing aromatic polymers is a promising route to prepare N-doped carbon materials with low cost, easy regulation, and no external N source. However, there are relatively few studies applying these materials for persulfate activation, and the catalytic mechanisms of the existing reaction systems are divergent. In this paper, a series of N-doped carbon materials were prepared by carbonizing polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), and PANI-PPy copolymers. The copolymer-derived carbon materials exhibit superior peroxydisulfate (PDS) catalytic activity compared to some commercially available and reported carbon materials. Combing quenching experiments, EPR analysis, chemical probe analysis, and various electrochemical analysis methods identified the singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and electron transfer as the main reaction pathways of all systems, but the contribution of each pathway was influenced by the types of precursors. The structure-activity relationship indicated that the carbonyl group (CO) was the main active site for the ¹O₂ pathway, while the electron transfer ability of the reaction system and the potential of the complex formed by catalyst and PDS jointly determined the electron transfer pathway. This paper provides a new strategy for obtaining excellent N-doped carbon-based persulfate activators and deepens the insight into the mechanism of PDS activation by N-doped carbon materials.

Probing sub-5 Ångstrom micropores in carbon for precise light olefin/paraffin separation

Olefin/paraffin separation is an important but challenging and energy-intensive process in petrochemical industry. The realization of carbons with size-exclusion capability is highly desirable but rarely reported. Herein, we report polydopamine-derived carbons (PDA-Cx, where x refers to the pyrolysis temperature) with tailorable sub-5 Å micropore orifices together with larger microvoids by one-step pyrolysis. The sub-5 Å micropore orifices centered at 4.1-4.3 Å in PDA-C800 and 3.7-4.0 Å in PDA-C900 allow the entry of olefins while entirely excluding their paraffin counterparts, performing a precise cut-off to discriminate olefin/paraffin with sub-angstrom discrepancy. The larger voids enable high C₂H₄ and C₃H₆ capacities of 2.25 and 1.98 mmol g^-1 under ambient conditions, respectively. Breakthrough experiments confirm that a one-step adsorption-desorption process can obtain high-purity olefins. Inelastic neutron scattering further reveals the host-guest interaction of adsorbed C₂H₄ and C₃H₆ molecules in PDA-Cx. This study opens an avenue to exploit the sub-5 Å micropores in carbon and their desirable size-exclusion effect.

Acceleration of the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes over an N-doped porous carbon sphere-confined ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst

Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to obtain alkenes is a key reaction in petrochemical and fine chemical industries. However, the development of stable and highly selective catalysts with uniformly dispersed active sites is still immensely challenging for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In this study, N-doped porous carbon nanospheres (NPCNs) were synthesized by the nanoemulsion self-assembly and subsequently carbonization method. Ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on NPCNs. The obtained PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited an open framework and abundant active sites originating from ultrafine PdCu NPs. In the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, the PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited a remarkable performance and stability, outperforming most of the classical catalysts. The excellent performance was related to the introduction of a secondary metal Cu, which can regulate the electronic state of Pd active sites to further enhance the hydrogenation activity and selectivity. Hence, the facile approach reported herein may be useful for constructing highly dispersed bimetallic NP-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes in the petrochemical industry.

Catalytic Properties of High Nitrogen Content Carbonaceous Materials

The influence of structural modifications on the catalytic activity of carbon materials is poorly understood. A collection of carbonaceous materials with different pore networks and high nitrogen content was characterized and used to catalyze four reactions to deduce structure-activity relationships. The CO₂ cycloaddition and Knoevenagel reaction depend on Lewis basic sites (electron-rich nitrogen species). The absence of large conjugated carbon domains resulting from the introduction of large amounts of nitrogen in the carbon network is responsible for poor redox activity, as observed through the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene with hydrazine and the catalytic oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine using hydroperoxide. The material with the highest activity towards Lewis acid catalysis (in the hydrolysis of (dimethoxymethyl)benzene to benzaldehyde) is the most effective for small molecule activation and presents the highest concentration of electron-poor nitrogen species.

Monomicellar assembly to synthesize structured and functional mesoporous carbonaceous nanomaterials

The large pores of functional mesoporous carbonaceous nanomaterials have broad accessibility, making them efficient substrates for the mass transport of chemicals in biomedical applications, gas separation, catalysis, sensing, and energy storage and conversion. Recently, the assembly of monomicelles has been used to control the nanostructure and mesoporosity of carbonaceous nanomaterials, where the structure-oriented unit is a single micelle made up of block copolymers/surfactants and of precursor species (via hydrogen bonds, Coulombic and/or other noncovalent interactions). Each monomicelle then represents a template for a single mesopore, and multiple monomicelles can be stacked like LEGO blocks. After polymerization of the precursor species (in this case dopamine), carbonization results in the carbonaceous nanomaterial. The micellar size, structure and shape can be easily tuned by altering the synthetic conditions, providing a high degree of control over the structure of the final product, which can therefore be shaped into original nanostructures otherwise difficult to synthesize using conventional templating methods. Here we provide a detailed procedure for the preparation of the monomicelles, the monomicellar assembly into mesostructured polymeric samples and the conversion of polymeric samples to carbonaceous frameworks. We describe the functional characterization of two mesoporous carbonaceous nanomaterials that demonstrate excellent sodium-ion storage performance and oxygen reduction reactivity, respectively. The monomicellar assembly process for the synthesis of the ordered mesoporous polymers requires ~5 h; the synthesis, including subsequent centrifugation, freeze drying and carbonization, requires 2 d, whereas the entire procedure, including the characterization of the nanomaterials, requires ~4 d.

Nitrogen-Doped Hollow Carbon Spheres Based on Schiff Base Reaction as an Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium and Sodium Ion Batteries

Nitrogen-doped carbon has great potential in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), considering N-doping can not only improve the surface wettability of carbon materials, but also accelerate charge transfer by generating additional defects. However, designing carbon materials with a high nitrogen content and uniform distribution using conventional doping methods remains a challenge. In this study, a hollow carbon sphere with an ultrahigh nitrogen content of 9.58 wt % was successfully fabricated by rationally designing Schiff base chemistry (PTA-NHCS-700). Stable hierarchical pore structures, moderate defects, and large specific surface areas were formed during the carbonization process. Excellent electrochemical performance was observed in LIBs (204.2 mAh g^-1 after 7000 cycles at 5 A g^-1 ) and SIBs (154.2 mAh g^-1 after 10000 cycles at 5 A g^-1 ). This study not only promotes the development of efficient carbon anode materials for LIBs and SIBs, but also provides a novel idea for the doping of heteroatoms with special chemical structures.

Controlled synthesis of solid-shelled non-spherical and faceted microbubbles

The ability to control the shape of hollow particles (e.g., capsules or bubbles) holds great promise for enhancing the encapsulation efficiency and mechanical/optical properties. However, conventional preparation methods suffer from a low yield, difficulty in controlling the shape, and a tedious production process, limiting their widespread application. Here, we present a method for fabricating polyhedral graphene oxide (GO)-shelled microbubbles with sharp edges and vertices, which is based on the microfluidic generation of spherical compound bubbles followed by shell deformation. Sphere-to-polytope deformation is a result of the shell instability due to gradual outward gas transport, which is dictated by Laplace pressure across the shell. The shape-variant behaviours of the bubbles can also be attributed to the compositional heterogeneity of the shells. In particular, the high degree of control of microfluidic systems enables the formation of non-spherical bubbles with various shapes; the structural motifs of the bubbles are easily controlled by varying the size and thickness of the mid-shell in compound bubbles, ranging from tetrahedra to octahedra. The strategy presented in this study provides a new route for fabricating 3D structured solid bubbles, which is particularly advantageous for the development of high-performance mechanical or thermal material applications.

Superhydrophobic Ru Catalyst for Highly Efficient Hydrogenation of Phenol under Mild Aqueous Conditions

Selective hydrogenations of lignin-derived phenolic compounds represent essential processes in the chemical industry, especially for production of a multitude of fine chemicals. However, selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds in water phase suffers from low conversion. Here we report a catalyst of well-dispersed Ru clusters fixed in N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (Ru@N-CS) for enhanced cyclohexanol productivity in phenol hydrogenation at mild aqueous condition. This superhydrophobicity carbon spheres appear to selectively allow diffusion of phenol and hydrogen molecules to the electron-rich coordination unsaturated Ru active sites, while confining the reactants there to enhance its reaction probability. The Ru@N-CS catalyst can selectively hydrogenate phenol at 80 °C and 0.5 MPa of H2 in 30 min in aqueous medium with phenol conversions of 100% and ~100% cyclohexanol selectivity, corresponding to cyclohexanol productivity up to 471 per g of Ru per minute. The TOF value is up to 9980 h−1, which 14 times more than Ru nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon hollow spheres (Ru/N-CS). This work provides an important catalytic system for upgrading of bio-oil into value-added chemicals under mild aqueous-phase.

Anisotropic Self-Assembly of Asymmetric Mesoporous Hemispheres with Tunable Pore Structures at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

Asymmetric materials have attracted tremendous interest because of their intriguing physicochemical properties and promising applications, but endowing them with precisely controlled morphologies and porous structures remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile micelle anisotropic self-assembly approach on a droplet surface is demonstrated to fabricate asymmetric carbon hemispheres with a jellyfish-like shape and radial multilocular mesostructure. This facile synthesis follows an interface-energy-mediated nucleation and growth mechanism, which allows easy control of the micellar self-assembly behaviors from isotropic to anisotropic modes. Furthermore, the micelle structure can also be systematically manipulated by selecting different amphiphilic triblock copolymers as a template, resulting in diverse novel asymmetric nanostructures, including eggshell, lotus, jellyfish, and mushroom-shaped architectures. The unique jellyfish-like hemispheres possess large open mesopores (∼14 nm), a high surface area (∼684 m² g^-1), abundant nitrogen dopants (∼6.3 wt %), a core-shell mesostructure and, as a result, manifest excellent sodium-storage performance in both half and full-cell configurations. Overall, our approach provides new insights and inspirations for exploring sophisticated asymmetric nanostructures for many potential applications.

Phase Engineering of Defective Copper Selenide toward Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPS) and the sluggish Li-S conversion kinetics are two main barriers toward the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, we propose the addition of copper selenide nanoparticles at the cathode to trap LiPS and accelerate the Li-S reaction kinetics. Using both computational and experimental results, we demonstrate the crystal phase and concentration of copper vacancies to control the electronic structure of the copper selenide, its affinity toward LiPS chemisorption, and its electrical conductivity. The adjustment of the defect density also allows for tuning the electrochemically active sites for the catalytic conversion of polysulfide. The optimized S/Cu_1.8Se cathode efficiently promotes and stabilizes the sulfur electrochemistry, thus improving significantly the LSB performance, including an outstanding cyclability over 1000 cycles at 3 C with a capacity fading rate of just 0.029% per cycle, a superb rate capability up to 5 C, and a high areal capacity of 6.07 mAh cm^-2 under high sulfur loading. Overall, the present work proposes a crystal phase and defect engineering strategy toward fast and durable sulfur electrochemistry, demonstrating great potential in developing practical LSBs.

Constructing Unique Mesoporous Carbon Superstructures via Monomicelle Interface Confined Assembly

Constructing hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) mesostructures with unique pore structure, controllable morphology, highly accessible surface area, and appealing functionality remains a great challenge in materials science. Here, we report a monomicelle interface confined assembly approach to fabricate an unprecedented type of 3D mesoporous N-doped carbon superstructure for the first time. In this hierarchical structure, a large hollow locates in the center (∼300 nm in diameter), and an ultrathin monolayer of spherical mesopores (∼22 nm) uniformly distributes on the hollow shells. Meanwhile, a small hole (4.0-4.5 nm) is also created on the interior surface of each small spherical mesopore, enabling the superstructure to be totally interconnected. Vitally, such interconnected porous supraparticles exhibit ultrahigh accessible surface area (685 m² g^-1) and good underwater aerophilicity due to the abundant spherical mesopores. Additionally, the number (70-150) of spherical mesopores, particle size (22 and 42 nm), and shell thickness (4.0-26 nm) of the supraparticles can all be accurately manipulated. Besides this spherical morphology, other configurations involving 3D hollow nanovesicles and 2D nanosheets were also obtained. Finally, we manifest the mesoporous carbon superstructure as an advanced electrocatalytic material with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V (vs RHE), equivalent to the value of the commercial Pt/C electrode, and notable durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

Confining ZnS/SnS2 Ultrathin Heterostructured Nanosheets in Hollow N-Doped Carbon Nanocubes as Novel Sulfur Host for Advanced Li-S Batteries

Hollow nanostructured hosts are important scaffolds to achieve high sulfur loading, fast charge transfer, and conspicuous restraint of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, developing high-efficiency hollow hosts for improving utilization and conversion of aggregated sulfur in the hollow chamber remains a longstanding challenge. Herein, hollow N-doped carbon nanocubes confined petal-like ZnS/SnS₂ heterostructures (ZnS/SnS₂ @NC) as a conceptually novel host for Li-S batteries are reported. Specifically, compared to consubstantial hollow double-shelled hosts, the ZnS/SnS₂ @NC with higher effective active surface area brings dense contact with sulfur and enhances efficient adsorption sites for binding LiPSs and accelerating their conversion. Benefiting from the unique structure and sophisticated composition, the resulting S@ZnS/SnS₂ @NC cathodes exhibit 1294 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 C, an ultralow capacity decay of 0.016% per cycle over 500 cycles at 1.0 C, and a high area capacity of 4.77 mAh cm^-2 at 0.5 C (5.9 mg cm^-2 ). Meanwhile, the performance evolution of S@ZnS/SnS₂ @NC cathodes under various sulfur loadings is further investigated by using EIS, which provides the beneficial guidance to explore viable strategies further optimizing their performance. This work sheds new insights into the design of hollow nanostructured hosts with a distinguished ability to regulate LiPSs in Li-S batteries.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

Atomic Sn-enabled high-utilization, large-capacity, and long-life Na anode

Constructing robust nucleation sites with an ultrafine size in a confined environment is essential toward simultaneously achieving superior utilization, high capacity, and long-term durability in Na metal-based energy storage, yet remains largely unexplored. Here, we report a previously unexplored design of spatially confined atomic Sn in hollow carbon spheres for homogeneous nucleation and dendrite-free growth. The designed architecture maximizes Sn utilization, prevents agglomeration, mitigates volume variation, and allows complete alloying-dealloying with high-affinity Sn as persistent nucleation sites, contrary to conventional spatially exposed large-size ones without dealloying. Thus, conformal deposition is achieved, rendering an exceptional capacity of 16 mAh cm^-2 in half-cells and long cycling over 7000 hours in symmetric cells. Moreover, the well-known paradox is surmounted, delivering record-high Na utilization (e.g., 85%) and large capacity (e.g., 8 mAh cm^-2) while maintaining extraordinary durability over 5000 hours, representing an important breakthrough for stabilizing Na anode.

Temperature-Controlled Selectivity of Hydrogenation and Hydrodeoxygenation of Biomass by Superhydrophilic Nitrogen/Oxygen Co-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosphere Supported Pd Nanoparticles

Selective hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass to value-added products play a crucial role in the development of renewable energy resources. However, achieving a temperature-controlled selectivity within one catalytic system while retaining excellent hydrogenation and HDO performance remains a great challenge. Here, nitrogen/oxygen (N/O) co-doped porous carbon nanosphere derived from resin polymer spheres is synthesized as the host matrix to in situ encapsulate highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles (NPs). Through N/O co-doping, the defects on the surface of carbon structure can serve as active sites to promote substrate adsorption. After a facile H₂ O₂ post-treatment process, the presence of abundant carboxyl groups on the porous carbon nanospheres can act as acidic sites to replace the use of acidic additives in the HDO process. Additionally, the increased surface oxygen-containing groups improve hydrophilicity to disperse catalysts in aqueous solutions. Owing to the unique highly dispersed Pd NPs and abundant surface defects, the Pd@APF-H₂ O₂ (2.3 nm) catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity and temperature-controlled selectivity for hydrogenation and HDO products of biomass-derived vanillin.

Reasonable Construction of Hollow Carbon Spheres with an Adjustable Shell Surface for Supercapacitors

Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) manifest specific merit in achieving large interior void space, high permeability, wide contactable area, and strong stacking ability with negligible aggregation and have attracted attention due to their high supercapacitor activity. As the key factor affecting supercapacitor performance, the surface chemical properties, shell thickness, roughness, and pore volumes of HCS are the focus of research in this field. Herein, the surface chemical properties and structures of HCS are simultaneously adjusted by a feasible and simple process of in situ activation during assembly of resin and potassium chloride (KCl). This strategy involves KCl participating in resin polymerization and the superior performance of potassium species on activating carbon. The surface N/O content, thickness, defects, and roughness degree of HCS can be controlled by adjusting the dosage of KCl. Electrochemical tests show that optimized HCS has suitable roughness, high surface area, and abundant surface N/O functional groups, which endow it with excellent electrochemical capacitance properties, showing its high potential in supercapacitors.

Customized Structure Design and Functional Mechanism Analysis of Carbon Spheres for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are attracting much attention due to their high theoretical energy density and are considered to be the predominant competitors for next-generation energy storage systems. The practical commercial application of LSBs is mainly hindered by the severe "shuttle effect" of the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the serious damage of lithium dendrites. Various carbon materials with different characteristics have played an important role in overcoming the above-mentioned problems. Carbon spheres (CSs) are extensively explored to enhance the performance of LSBs owing to their superior structures. The review presents the state-of-the-art advances of CSs for advanced high-energy LSBs, including their preparation strategies and applications in inhibiting the "shuttle effect" of the LiPSs and protecting lithium anodes. The unique restriction effect of CSs on LiPSs is explained from three working mechanisms: physical confinement, chemical interaction, and catalytic conversion. From the perspective of interfacial engineering and 3D structure designing, the protective effect of CSs on the lithium anode is also analyzed. Not only does this review article contain a summary of CSs in LSBs, but also future directions and prospects are discussed. The systematic discussions and suggested directions can enlighten thoughts in the reasonable design of CSs for LSBs in near future.

K2FeO4-assisted KOH activation can improve the graphitization and porous structure to enhance the electrochemical performance of carbon materials.

Carbonaceous Hosts for Sulfur Cathode in Alkali-Metal/S (Alkali Metal = Lithium, Sodium, Potassium) Batteries

Alkali-metal/sulfur batteries hold great promise for offering relatively high energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. By providing viable sulfur composites that can be effectively used, carbonaceous hosts as a key component play critical roles in overcoming the preliminary challenges associated with the insulating sulfur and its relatively soluble polysulfides. Herein, a comprehensive overview and recent progress on carbonaceous hosts for advanced next-generation alkali-metal/sulfur batteries are presented. In order to encapsulate the highly active sulfur mass and fully limit polysulfide dissolution, strategies for tailoring the design and synthesis of carbonaceous hosts are summarized in this work. The sticking points that remain for sulfur cathodes in current alkali-metal/sulfur systems and the future remedies that can be provided by carbonaceous hosts are also indicated, which can lead to long cycling lifetimes and highly reversible capacities under repeated sulfur reduction reactions in alkali-metal/sulfur during cycling.

Carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts: from oxygen reduction to multifunctional electrocatalysis

Since the discovery of N-doped carbon nanotubes as the first carbon-based metal-free electrocatalyst (C-MFEC) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 2009, C-MFECs have shown multifunctional electrocatalytic activities for many reactions beyond ORR, such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and hydrogen peroxide production reaction (H₂O₂PR). Consequently, C-MFECs have attracted a great deal of interest for various applications, including metal-air batteries, water splitting devices, regenerative fuel cells, solar cells, fuel and chemical production, water purification, to mention a few. By altering the electronic configuration and/or modulating their spin angular momentum, both heteroatom(s) doping and structural defects (e.g., atomic vacancy, edge) have been demonstrated to create catalytic active sites in the skeleton of graphitic carbon materials. Although certain C-MFECs have been made to be comparable to or even better than their counterparts based on noble metals, transition metals and/or their hybrids, further research and development are necessary in order to translate C-MFECs for practical applications. In this article, we present a timely and comprehensive, but critical, review on recent advancements in the field of C-MFECs within the past five years or so by discussing various types of electrocatalytic reactions catalyzed by C-MFECs. An emphasis is given to potential applications of C-MFECs for energy conversion and storage. The structure-property relationship for and mechanistic understanding of C-MFECs will also be discussed, along with the current challenges and future perspectives.
