Spin caloritronics in metallic superlattices

Spin caloritronics, a research field studying on the interconversion between a charge current (Jc) and a heat current (Jq) mediated by a spin current (Js) and/or magnetization (M), has attracted much attention not only for academic interest but also for practical applications. Newly discovered spin-caloritronic phenomena such as the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) have stimulated the renewed interest in the thermoelectric phenomena of a magnet, which have been known for a long time, e.g. the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). These spin-caloritronic phenomena involving the SSE and the ANE have provided with a new direction for thermoelectric conversion exploitingJsand/orM. Importantly, the symmetry of ANE allows the thermoelectric conversion in the transverse configuration betweenJqandJc. Although the transverse configuration is totally different from the conventional longitudinal configuration based on the Seebeck effect and has many advantages, we are still facing several issues that need to be solved before developing practical applications. The primal issue is the improvement of conversion efficiency. In the case of ANE-based applications, a material with a large anomalous Nernst coefficient (SANE) is the key for solving the issue. This review article introduces the increase ofSANEcan be achieved by forming superlattice structures, which has been demonstrated for several kinds of materials combinations. The overall picture of studies on spin caloritronics is first surveyed. Then, we mention the pioneering work on the transverse thermoelectric conversion in superlattice structures, which was performed using Fe-based metallic superlattices, and show the recent studies for the Ni-based metallic superlattices and the ordered alloy-based metallic superlattices.

Ferromagnetic Insulating Ground-State Resolved in Mixed Protons and Oxygen Vacancies-Doped La0.67Sr0.33CoO3 Thin Films via Ionic Liquid Gating

The realization of ferromagnetic insulating ground state is a critical prerequisite for spintronic applications. By applying electric field-controlled ionic liquid gating (ILG) to stoichiometry La0.67Sr0.33CoO3 thin films, the doping of protons (H+) has been achieved for the first time. Furthermore, a hitherto-unreported ferromagnetic insulating phase with a remarkably high Tc up to 180 K has been observed which can be attributed to the doping of H+ and the formation of oxygen vacancies (VO). The chemical formula of the dual-ion migrated film has been identified as La2/3Sr1/3CoO8/3H2/3 based on combined Co L23-edge absorption spectra and configuration interaction cluster calculations, from which we are able to explain the ferromagnetic ground state in terms of the distinct magnetic moment contributions from Co ions with octahedral (Oh) and tetrahedral (Td) symmetries following antiparallel spin alignments. Further density functional theory calculations have been performed to verify the functionality of H+ as the transfer ion and the origin of the novel ferromagnetic insulating ground state. Our results provide a fundamental understanding of the ILG regulation mechanism and shed light on the manipulating of more functionalities in other correlated compounds through dual-ion manipulation.

Floquet Engineering the Exceptional Points in Parity-Time-Symmetric Magnonics

Magnons serve as a testing ground for fundamental aspects of Hermitian and non-Hermitian wave mechanics and are of high relevance for information technology. This study presents setups for realizing spatiotemporally driven parity-time- (PT) symmetric magnonics based on coupled magnetic waveguides and magnonic crystals. A charge current in a metal layer with strong spin-orbit coupling sandwiched between two insulating magnetic waveguides leads to gain or loss in the magnon amplitude depending on the directions of the magnetization and the charge currents. When gain in one waveguide is balanced by loss in the other waveguide, a PT-symmetric system hosting non-Hermitian degeneracies [or exceptional points (EPs)] is realized. For ac current, multiple EPs appear for a certain gain-loss strength and mark the boundaries between the preserved PT-symmetry and the broken PT-symmetry phases. The number of islands of broken PT-symmetry phases and their extensions is tunable by the frequency and the strength of the spacer current. At EP and beyond, the induced and amplified magnetization oscillations are strong and self-sustained. In particular, these magnetization auto-oscillations in a broken PT-symmetry phase occur at low current densities and do not require further adjustments such as tilt angle between electric polarization and equilibrium magnetization direction in spin-torque oscillators, pointing to a new design of these oscillators and their utilization in computing and sensorics. It is also shown how the periodic gain-loss mechanism allows for the generation of high-frequency spin waves with low-frequency currents. For spatially periodic gain and loss acting on a magnonic crystal, magnon modes approaching each other at the Brillouin-zone boundaries are highly susceptible to PT symmetry, allowing for a wave-vector-resolved experimental realization at very low currents.

Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect Thermopiles Based on Flexible Co-Rich Amorphous Ribbons/Pt Thin-Film Heterostructures

Thermoelectric phenomena, such as the Anomalous Nernst and Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effects, are promising for sensor applications in the area of renewable energy. In the case of flexible electronic materials, the request is even larger because they can be integrated into devices having complex shape surfaces. Here, we reveal that Pt promotes an enhancement of the thermoelectric response in Co-rich ribbon/Pt heterostructures due to the spin-to-charge conversion. Moreover, we demonstrated that the employment of the thermopiles configuration in this system increases the induced thermoelectric current, a fact related to the considerable decrease in the electric resistance of the system. By comparing present findings with the literature, we were able to design a flexible thermopile based on LSSE without the lithography process. Additionally, the thermoelectric voltage found in the studied flexible heterostructures is comparable to the ones verified for rigid systems.

Ultra-thin magnetic film with giant phonon-drag for heat to spin current conversion

A tightly confined 2D electron gas with good carrier mobility and large spin-polarization is an essential ingredient for the implementation of spin-caloritronic conversion device technology. Here we give evidence that the SrTiO3/EuTiO3/LaAlO3 heterostructure is a prototype material for this purpose. The presence of Eu induces strong spin-polarization in the 2D electron gas spontaneously formed at the interface and ferromagnetic order at low temperature. Furthermore, tight 2D confinement and spin-polarization can be highly enhanced upon charge depletion, in turn generating huge thermopower associated with the phonon-drag mechanism. Most importantly, the remarkable difference in the population of the two spin channels results in the giant spin-polarized Seebeck effect and in turn, giant spin voltages of mV K-1 order at the two ends of an applied thermal gradient. Our results represent a strong assessment to the capabilities of this interface for low-temperature spin-caloritronic applications.

Magnon-phonon coupling: from fundamental physics to applications

In recent decades, there are immense applications for bulk and few-layer magnetic insulators in biomedicine, data storage, and signal transfer. In these applications, the interaction between spin and lattice vibration has significant impacts on the device performance. In this article, we systematically review the fundamental physical aspects of magnon-phonon coupling in magnetic insulators. We first introduce the fundamental physics of magnons and magnon-phonon coupling in magnetic insulators and then discuss the influence of magnon-phonon coupling on the properties of magnons and phonons. Finally, a summary is presented, and we also discuss the possible open problems in this field. This article presents the advanced understanding of magnon-phonon coupling in magnetic insulators, which provides new opportunities for improving various possible applications.

Comparative study between charge and spin thermoelectric figure of merits in an antiferromagnetic ring

Considering the unique and diverse characteristic features of antiferromagnetic (AFM) systems, here in our work, we explore spin-dependent thermoelectric behavior in an AFM ring geometry. A reasonably large (≫1) spin figure of merit, referred to asZST, is obtained under suitable input conditions. Two important prerequisites are (i) breaking the symmetry among up and down spin sub-Hamiltonians and (ii) generating different asymmetric transmission line shapes across a Fermi energy for two opposite spin electrons. Describing the physical system within a tight-binding framework, where spin-dependent scattering occurs due to the interaction of itinerant electrons with local magnetic moments via the usual spin-moment exchange interaction, we compute all the thermoelectric quantities based on Landauer integrals following the Green's function technique. The behavior of charge figure of merit, denoted asZCT, is also discussed along withZST. ThoughZCTreaches above unity, it is much smaller compared toZST. This is the key finding of our investigation. To make the present communication a self-contained one, we compare the results with another arrangement of magnetic moments in a ring-like geometry and in a chain-like one. Our analysis gives a suitable hint that in the presence of spin-dependent scattering, much more favorable energy conversion can be substantiated.

Enhanced spin Seebeck effect via oxygen manipulation

Spin Seebeck effect (SSE) refers to the generation of an electric voltage transverse to a temperature gradient via a magnon current. SSE offers the potential for efficient thermoelectric devices because the transverse geometry of SSE enables to utilize waste heat from a large-area source by greatly simplifying the device structure. However, SSE suffers from a low thermoelectric conversion efficiency that must be improved for widespread application. Here we show that the SSE substantially enhances by oxidizing a ferromagnet in normal metal/ferromagnet/oxide structures. In W/CoFeB/AlOx structures, voltage-induced interfacial oxidation of CoFeB modifies the SSE, resulting in the enhancement of thermoelectric signal by an order of magnitude. We describe a mechanism for the enhancement that results from a reduced exchange interaction of the oxidized region of ferromagnet, which in turn increases a temperature difference between magnons in the ferromagnet and electrons in the normal metal and/or a gradient of magnon chemical potential in the ferromagnet. Our result will invigorate research for thermoelectric conversion by suggesting a promising way of improving the SSE efficiency.

Interplay between diffusion and magnon-drag thermopower in pure iron and dilute iron alloy nanowire networks

Results of measurements on the thermoelectric power of 45 nm diameter interconnected nanowire networks consisting of pure Fe, dilute FeCu and FeCr alloys and Fe/Cu multilayers are presented. The thermopower values of Fe nanowires are very close to those found in bulk materials, at all temperatures studied between 70 and 320 K. For pure Fe, the diffusion thermopower at room temperature, estimated to be around - 15 [Formula: see text]V/K from our data, is largely supplanted by the estimated positive magnon-drag contribution, close to 30 [Formula: see text]V/K. In dilute FeCu and FeCr alloys, the magnon-drag thermopower is found to decrease with increasing impurity concentration to about 10 [Formula: see text]V/K at 10[Formula: see text] impurity content. While the diffusion thermopower is almost unchanged in FeCu nanowire networks compared to pure Fe, it is strongly reduced in FeCr nanowires due to pronounced changes in the density of states of the majority spin electrons. Measurements performed on Fe(7 nm)/Cu(10 nm) multilayer nanowires indicate a dominant contribution of charge carrier diffusion to the thermopower, as previously found in other magnetic multilayers, and a cancellation of the magnon-drag effect. The magneto-resistance and magneto-Seebeck effects measured on Fe/Cu multilayer nanowires allow the estimation of the spin-dependent Seebeck coefficient in Fe, which is about - 7.6 [Formula: see text]V/K at ambient temperature.

Dynamical Behavior of Pure Spin Current in Organic Materials

Growing concentration on the novel information processing technology and low-cost, flexible materials make the spintronics and organic materials appealing for the future interdisciplinary investigations. Organic spintronics, in this context, has arisen and witnessed great advances during the past two decades owing to the continuous innovative exploitation of the charge-contained spin polarized current. Albeit with such inspiring facts, charge-absent spin angular momentum flow, namely pure spin currents (PSCs) are less probed in organic functional solids. In this review, the past exploring journey of PSC phenomenon in organic materials are retrospected, including non-magnetic semiconductors and molecular magnets. Starting with the basic concepts and the generation mechanism for PSC, the representative experimental observations of PSC in the organic-based networks are subsequently demonstrated and summarized, by accompanying explicit discussion over the propagating mechanism of net spin itself in the organic media. Finally, future perspectives on PSC in organic materials are illustrated mainly from the material point of view, including single molecule magnets, complexes for the organic ligands framework as well as the lanthanide metal complexes, organic radicals, and the emerging 2D organic magnets.

Chiral-phonon-activated spin Seebeck effect

Utilization of the interaction between spin and heat currents is the central focus of the field of spin caloritronics. Chiral phonons possessing angular momentum arising from the broken symmetry of a non-magnetic material create the potential for generating spin currents at room temperature in response to a thermal gradient, precluding the need for a ferromagnetic contact. Here we show the observation of spin currents generated by chiral phonons in a two-dimensional layered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite implanted with chiral cations when subjected to a thermal gradient. The generated spin current shows a strong dependence on the chirality of the film and external magnetic fields, of which the coefficient is orders of magnitude larger than that produced by the reported spin Seebeck effect. Our findings indicate the potential of chiral phonons for spin caloritronic applications and offer a new route towards spin generation in the absence of magnetic materials.

Anomalous Nernst Effect in Flexible Co-Based Amorphous Ribbons

Fe3Co67Cr3Si15B12 ribbons with a high degree of flexibility and excellent corrosion stability were produced by rapid quenching technique. Their structural, magnetic, and thermomagnetic (Anomalous Nernst Effect) properties were studied both in an as-quenched (NR) state and after stress annealing during 1 h at the temperature of 350 °C and a specific load of 230 MPa (AR). X-ray diffraction was used to verify the structural characteristics of our ribbons. Static magnetic properties were explored by inductive technique and vibrating sample magnetometry. The thermomagnetic curves investigated through the Anomalous Nernst Effect are consistent with the obtained magnetization results, presenting a linear response in the thermomagnetic signal, an interesting feature for sensor applications. Additionally, Anomalous Nernst Effect coefficient SANE values of 2.66μV/K and 1.93μV/K were estimated for the as-quenched and annealed ribbons, respectively. The interplay of the low magnetostrictive properties, soft magnetic behavior, linearity of the thermomagnetic response, and flexibility of these ribbons place them as promising systems to probe curved surfaces and propose multifunctional devices, including magnetic field-specialized sensors.

All-electrical reading and writing of spin chirality

Spintronics promises potential data encoding and computing technologies. Spin chirality plays a very important role in the properties of many topological and noncollinear magnetic materials. Here, we propose the all-electrical detection and manipulation of spin chirality in insulating chiral antiferromagnets. We demonstrate that the spin chirality in insulating epitaxial films of TbMnO₃ can be read electrically via the spin Seebeck effect and can be switched by electric fields via the multiferroic coupling of the spin chirality to the ferroelectric polarization. Moreover, multivalued states of the spin chirality can be realized by the combined application of electric and magnetic fields. Our results are a path toward next-generation, low-energy consumption memory and logic devices that rely on spin chirality.

Simulation of Laser-Heating and Energetic Plasma Plume Expansion in Pulsed Laser Deposition of Y3Fe5O12

In the present study, numerically iterative models are employed to study two processes involved in the pulsed laser deposition of an Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ target. The 1D conduction heat model is used to evaluate the temperature of the target irradiated by a nano-second pulse laser, taking into account the plasma shielding effect. Further, the gas dynamics model is employed to simulate the kinetic of plasma plume expansion. The results may be important in obtaining high-quality Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ thin films.

Scalable spin Seebeck thermoelectric generation using Fe-oxide nanoparticle assembled film on flexible substrate

We fabricated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle (NP)-assembled films on flexible polyimide sheets with Pt or Ta cap layer using a spin coating method and DC sputtering. The films were elaborated for spin Seebeck thermoelectric generator applications, and their spin Seebeck voltages were observed. We showed that the thermoelectric power of [Pt film/Fe₃O₄ NP]_n multilayered films increases with increasing number of stacking n. Additionally, we prepared spin Seebeck thermopile devices in which the Fe₃O₄ NP-assembled films capped by Pt and Ta are connected alternately in series. We demonstrated that spin Seebeck voltages of the thermopile devices are larger than those of single [Pt or Ta film/Fe₃O₄ NP]_n piece. Our results indicate that the spin Seebeck thermoelectric power of Fe₃O₄ NPs can be enhanced using a simple fabrication process without lithography technique.

Antiferromagnetic Inverse Spin Hall Effect

The inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is one of the accessible and reliable methods to detect spin current. The magnetization-dependent inverse spin Hall effect has been observed in magnets, expanding the dimension for spin-to-charge conversion. However, antiferromagnetic Néel-vector-dependent ISHE, which has been long time highly pursued, is still elusive. Here, ISHE in Mn₂ Au/[Co/Pd] heterostructures is investigated by terahertz emission and spin Seebeck effect measurements, where [Co/Pd] possesses perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for out-of-plane polarized spin current generation and Mn₂ Au is a collinear antiferromagnet for the spin-to-charge conversion. The out-of-plane spin polarization (σ_z ) is rotated toward in-plane by the Néel vectors in Mn₂ Au, then the spin current is converted into charge current at two staggered spin sublattices. The ISHE signal is much stronger when the converted charge current is parallel to the Néel vector compared with its orthogonal counterpart. The Néel vector and resultant ISHE signals, which is termed as antiferromagnetic inverse spin Hall effect, can be switched. The finding not only adds a new member to the Hall effect family, but also makes antiferromagnetic spintronics more flexible.

Theory of drift-enabled control in nonlocal magnon transport

Electrically injected and detected nonlocal magnon transport has emerged as a versatile method for transporting spin as well as probing the spin excitations in a magnetic insulator. We examine the role of drift currents in this phenomenon as a method for controlling the magnon propagation length. Formulating a phenomenological description, we identify the essential requirements for existence of magnon drift. Guided by this insight, we examine magnetic field gradient, asymmetric contribution to dispersion, and temperature gradient as three representative mechanisms underlying a finite magnon drift velocity, finding temperature gradient to be particularly effective.

Giant Extrinsic Spin Hall Effect in Platinum-Titanium Oxide Nanocomposite Films

Although the spin Hall effect provides a pathway for efficient and fast current-induced manipulation of magnetization, application of spin-orbit torque magnetic random access memory with low power dissipation is still limited to spin Hall materials with low spin Hall angles or very high resistivities. This work reports a group of spin Hall materials, Pt_{1 -x} (TiO₂ )_x nanocomposites, that combines a giant spin Hall effect with a low resistivity. The spin Hall angle of Pt_{1 -x} (TiO₂ )_x in an yttrium iron garnet/Pt_{1 -x} (TiO₂ )_x double-layer heterostructure is estimated from a combination of ferromagnetic resonance, spin pumping, and inverse spin Hall experiments. A giant spin Hall angle 1.607 ± 0.04 is obtained in a Pt_0.94 (TiO₂ )_0.06 nanocomposite film, which is an increase by an order of magnitude compared with 0.051 ± 0.002 in pure Pt thin film under the same conditions. The great enhancement of spin Hall angle is attributed to strong side-jump induced by TiO₂ impurities. These findings provide a new nanocomposite spin Hall material combining a giant spin Hall angle, low resistivity and excellent process compatibility with semiconductors for developing highly efficiency current-induced magnetization switching memory devices and logic devices.

Topology dependence of skyrmion Seebeck and skyrmion Nernst effect

We explore the dynamics of skyrmions with various topological charges induced by a temperature gradient in an ultra-thin insulating magnetic film. Combining atomistic spin simulations and analytical calculations we find a topology-dependent skyrmion Seebeck effect: while skyrmions and antiskyrmions move to the hot regime, a topologically trivial localized spin structure moves to the cold regime. We further reveal the emergence of a skyrmion Nernst effect, i.e. finite, topology-dependent velocities transverse to the direction of the temperature gradient. These findings are in agreement with accompanying simulations of skyrmionic motion induced by monochromatic magnon currents, allowing us to demonstrate that the magnonic spin Seebeck effect is responsible for both, skyrmion Seebeck and Nernst effect. Furthermore we employ scattering theory together with Thiele's equation to identify linear momentum transfer from the magnons to the skyrmion as the dominant contribution and to demonstrate that the direction of motion depends on the topological magnon Hall effect and the topological charge of the skyrmion.

Spin-thermoelectric effects in a quantum dot hybrid system with magnetic insulator

We investigate spin thermoelectric properties of a hybrid system consisting of a single-level quantum dot attached to magnetic insulator and metal electrodes. Magnetic insulator is assumed to be of ferromagnetic type and is a source of magnons, whereas metallic lead is reservoir of electrons. The temperature gradient set between the magnetic insulator and metallic electrodes induces the spin current flowing through the system. The generated spin current of magnonic (electric) type is converted to electric (magnonic) spin current by means of quantum dot. Expanding spin and heat currents flowing through the system, up to linear order, we introduce basic spin thermoelectric coefficients including spin conductance, spin Seebeck and spin Peltier coefficients and heat conductance. We analyse the spin thermoelectric properties of the system in two cases: in the large ondot Coulomb repulsion limit and when these interactions are finite.

Perfect spin Seebeck effect, spin-valve, spin-filter and spin-rectification based on the heterojunction of sawtooth graphene and graphyne nanoribbons

In order to develop low-power-consumption electronic devices, we studied a heterojunction composed of a 5,4-sawtooth graphene nanoribbon and 6,6,12-graphyne nanoribbon by using first-principles calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. Some spin caloritronic and spintronic devices can be realized based on the heterojunction, exhibiting excellent and multifunctional properties: a net spin current and perfect spin Seebeck effect are generated, a thermal induced and bias induced colossal magnetoresistance is obtained, and a spin filter with 100% spin polarization and a spin rectification with a high rectification ratio are acquired. Our results indicate that the proposed heterojunction is a promising candidate for multi-effect and low-power-consumption electronic devices.

Thermoelectric Polarization Transport in Ferroelectric Ballistic Point Contacts

We formulate a scattering theory of polarization and heat transport through a ballistic ferroelectric point contact. We predict a polarization current under either an electric field or a temperature difference that depends strongly on the direction of the ferroelectric order and can be detected by its magnetic stray field and associated thermovoltage and Peltier effect.

Role of Magnon-Magnon Scattering in Magnon Polaron Spin Seebeck Effect

The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) signal of magnon polarons in bulk-Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12} (YIG)/Pt heterostructures is found to drastically change as a function of temperature. It appears as a dip in the total SSE signal at low temperatures, but as the temperature increases, the dip gradually decreases before turning to a peak. We attribute the observed dip-to-peak transition to the rapid rise of the four-magnon scattering rate. Our analysis provides important insights into the microscopic origin of the hybridized excitations and the overall temperature dependence of the SSE anomalies.

Quantum Sensing of Thermoelectric Power in Low-Dimensional Materials

Thermoelectric power, has been extensively studied in low-dimensional materials where quantum confinement and spin textures can largely modulate thermopower generation. In addition to classical and macroscopic values, thermopower also varies locally over a wide range of length scales, and is fundamentally linked to electron wave functions and phonon propagation. Various experimental methods for the quantum sensing of localized thermopower have been suggested, particularly based on scanning probe microscopy. Here, critical advances in the quantum sensing of thermopower are introduced, from the atomic to the several-hundred-nanometer scales, including the unique role of low-dimensionality, defects, spins, and relativistic effects for optimized power generation. Investigating the microscopic nature of thermopower in quantum materials can provide insights useful for the design of advanced materials for future thermoelectric applications. Quantum sensing techniques for thermopower can pave the way to practical and novel energy devices for a sustainable society.

Large magnon-induced anomalous Nernst conductivity in single-crystal MnBi

Thermoelectric modules are a promising approach to energy harvesting and efficient cooling. In addition to the longitudinal Seebeck effect, transverse devices utilizing the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) have recently attracted interest. For high conversion efficiency, it is required that the material have a large ANE thermoelectric power and low electrical resistance, which lead to the conductivity of the ANE. ANE is usually explained in terms of intrinsic contributions from Berry curvature. Our observations suggest that extrinsic contributions also matter. Studying single-crystal manganese-bismuth (MnBi), we find a high ANE thermopower (∼10 μV/K) under 0.6 T at 80 K, and a transverse thermoelectric conductivity of over 40 A/Km. With insight from theoretical calculations, we attribute this large ANE predominantly to a new advective magnon contribution arising from magnon-electron spin-angular momentum transfer. We propose that introducing a large spin-orbit coupling into ferromagnetic materials may enhance the ANE through the extrinsic contribution of magnons.

Electric field control of magnon spin currents in an antiferromagnetic insulator

Pure spin currents can be generated via thermal excitations of magnons. These magnon spin currents serve as carriers of information in insulating materials, and controlling them using electrical means may enable energy efficient information processing. Here, we demonstrate electric field control of magnon spin currents in the antiferromagnetic insulator Cr₂O₃. We show that the thermally driven magnon spin currents reveal a spin-flop transition in thin-film Cr₂O₃. Crucially, this spin-flop can be turned on or off by applying an electric field across the thickness of the film. Using this tunability, we demonstrate electric field–induced switching of the polarization of magnon spin currents by varying only a gate voltage while at a fixed magnetic field. We propose a model considering an electric field–dependent spin-flop transition, arising from a change in sublattice magnetizations via a magnetoelectric coupling. These results provide a different approach toward controlling magnon spin current in antiferromagnets.

Extrinsic Surface Magnetic Anisotropy Contribution in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 Interface in Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect by Graphene Interlayer

A recent study found that magnetization curves for Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ (YIG) slab and thick films (>20 μm thick) differed from bulk system curves by their longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a Pt/YIG bilayer system. The deviation was due to intrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy, which is difficult to adopt extrinsic surface magnetic anisotropy even when in contact with other materials on the YIG surface. This study experimentally demonstrates evidence for extrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy when in contact with a diamagnetic graphene interlayer by observing the spin Seebeck effect, directly proving intrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy interruption. We show the Pt/YIG bilayer system graphene interlayer role using large area single and multilayered graphenes using the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect at room temperature, and address the presence of surface magnetic anisotropy due to magnetic proximity between graphene and YIG layer. These findings suggest a promising route to understand new physics of spin Seebeck effect in spin transport.

Observation of nuclear-spin Seebeck effect

Thermoelectric effects have been applied to power generators and temperature sensors that convert waste heat into electricity. The effects, however, have been limited to electrons to occur, and inevitably disappear at low temperatures due to electronic entropy quenching. Here, we report thermoelectric generation caused by nuclear spins in a solid: nuclear-spin Seebeck effect. The sample is a magnetically ordered material MnCO₃ having a large nuclear spin (I = 5/2) of ⁵⁵Mn nuclei and strong hyperfine coupling, with a Pt contact. In the system, we observe low-temperature thermoelectric signals down to 100 mK due to nuclear-spin excitation. Our theoretical calculation in which interfacial Korringa process is taken into consideration quantitatively reproduces the results. The nuclear thermoelectric effect demonstrated here offers a way for exploring thermoelectric science and technologies at ultralow temperatures.

Simultaneous harvesting of radiative cooling and solar heating for transverse thermoelectric generation

For any thermoelectric effects to be achieved, a thermoelectric material must have hot and cold sides. Typically, the hot side can be easily obtained by excess heat. However, the passive cooling method is often limited to convective heat transfer to the surroundings. Since thermoelectric voltage is proportional to the temperature difference between the hot and cold sides, efficient passive cooling to increase the temperature gradient is of critical importance. Here, we report simultaneous harvesting of radiative cooling at the top and solar heating at the bottom to enhance the temperature gradient for a transverse thermoelectric effect which generates thermoelectric voltage perpendicular to the temperature gradient. We demonstrate this concept by using the spin Seebeck effect and confirm that the spin Seebeck device shows the highest thermoelectric voltage when both radiative cooling and solar heating are utilized. Furthermore, the device generates thermoelectric voltage even at night through radiative cooling which enables continuous energy harvesting throughout a day. Planar geometry and scalable fabrication process are advantageous for energy harvesting applications.

The Strain-Tuned Spin Seebeck Effect, Spin Polarization, and Giant Magnetoresistance of a Graphene Nanobubble in Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons

By using first-principle calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function approach, we studied the spin caloritronic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with a nanobubble at the edge (NB-ZGNRs). The thermal spin-polarized currents can be induced by a temperature difference, and the spin Seebeck effect is found in the nanoribbon. The spin polarization, magnetoresistance, and Seebeck coefficients are discussed, which are strongly affected and can be tuned by the geometrical strain. Moreover, some novel spin caloritronic devices are designed, such as a device that generates bidirectional perfect spin currents and thermally induced giant magnetoresistances. Our results open up the possibility of tuning the spin caloritronic properties of the NB-ZGNR-based devices by changing the elastic strain on the graphene nanobubble.

Tunable Damping in Magnetic Nanowires Induced by Chiral Pumping of Spin Waves

Spin-current and spin-wave-based devices have been considered as promising candidates for next-generation information transport and processing and wave-based computing technologies with low-power consumption. Spin pumping has attracted tremendous attention and has led to interesting phenomena, including the line width broadening, which indicates damping enhancement due to energy dissipation. Recently, chiral spin pumping of spin waves has been experimentally realized and theoretically studied in magnetic nanostructures. Here, we experimentally observe by Brillouin light scattering (BLS) microscopy the line width broadening sensitive to magnetization configuration in a hybrid metal-insulator nanostructure consisting of a Co nanowire grating dipolarly coupled to a planar continuous YIG film, consistent with the results of the measured hysteresis loop. Tunable line width broadening has been confirmed independently by propagating spin-wave spectroscopy, where unidirectional spin waves are detected. Position-dependent BLS measurement unravels an oscillating-like behavior of magnon populations in Co nanowire grating, which might result from the magnon trap effect. These results are thus attractive for reconfigurable nanomagnonics devices.

Atomic-scale insights into quantum-order parameters in bismuth-doped iron garnet

Bismuth and rare earth elements have been identified as effective substituent elements in the iron garnet structure, allowing an enhancement in magneto-optical response by several orders of magnitude in the visible and near-infrared region. Various mechanisms have been proposed to account for such enhancement, but testing of these ideas is hampered by a lack of suitable experimental data, where information is required not only regarding the lattice sites where substituent atoms are located but also how these atoms affect various order parameters. Here, we show for a Bi-substituted lutetium iron garnet how a suite of advanced electron microscopy techniques, combined with theoretical calculations, can be used to determine the interactions between a range of quantum-order parameters, including lattice, charge, spin, orbital, and crystal field splitting energy. In particular, we determine how the Bi distribution results in lattice distortions that are coupled with changes in electronic structure at certain lattice sites. These results reveal that these lattice distortions result in a decrease in the crystal-field splitting energies at Fe sites and in a lifted orbital degeneracy at octahedral sites, while the antiferromagnetic spin order remains preserved, thereby contributing to enhanced magneto-optical response in bismuth-substituted iron garnet. The combination of subangstrom imaging techniques and atomic-scale spectroscopy opens up possibilities for revealing insights into hidden coupling effects between multiple quantum-order parameters, thereby further guiding research and development for a wide range of complex functional materials.

Role of Ferromagnetic Monolayer WSe2 Flakes in the Pt/Y3Fe5O12 Bilayer Structure in the Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect

The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) has attracted renewed interest as a promising phenomenon for energy harvesting systems. A noteworthy effort has been devoted to improving the SSE voltage by inserting ultrathin magnetic layers including Fe₇₀Cu₃₀ interlayers in Pt/Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ (Pt/YIG) systems with increased spin-mixing conductance at the interfaces. Nevertheless, the responsible underlying physics associated with the role of the interlayer in Pt/YIG systems in the SSE is still unknown. In this paper, we demonstrate that with a monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML WSe₂) interlayer in the Pt/YIG bilayer system, the longitudinal SSE (LSSE) voltage is significantly increased by the increased spin accumulation in the Pt layer; the spin fluctuation in ML WSe₂ amplifies the spin current transmission because the in-plane-aligned WSe₂ spins are coupled to thermally pumped spins under nonequilibrium magnetization conditions in the LSSE configuration at room temperature. The thermopower (V_LSSE/ΔT) improves by 323% with respect to the value of the reference Pt/YIG bilayer sample in the LSSE at room temperature. In addition, the induced ferromagnetic properties of the ML WSe₂ flakes on YIG increase the LSSE voltage (V_LSSE) of the sample; the ferromagnetic properties are a result of the improved magnetic moment density in the ML WSe₂ flakes and their two-dimensional (2D) ML nature in the LSSE under nonequilibrium magnetization conditions. The results can extend the application range of the materials in energy harvesting and provide important information on the physics of the LSSE with a transition metal dichalcogenide intermediate layer in spin transport.

Near-room temperature ferromagnetic insulating state in highly distorted LaCoO2.5 with CoO5 square pyramids

Dedicated control of oxygen vacancies is an important route to functionalizing complex oxide films. It is well-known that tensile strain significantly lowers the oxygen vacancy formation energy, whereas compressive strain plays a minor role. Thus, atomic reconstruction by extracting oxygen from a compressive-strained film is challenging. Here we report an unexpected LaCoO2.5 phase with a zigzag-like oxygen vacancy ordering through annealing a compressive-strained LaCoO3 in vacuum. The synergetic tilt and distortion of CoO5 square pyramids with large La and Co shifts are quantified using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The large in-plane expansion of CoO5 square pyramids weaken the crystal field splitting and facilitated the ordered high-spin state of Co2+, which produces an insulating ferromagnetic state with a Curie temperature of ~284 K and a saturation magnetization of ~0.25 μB/Co. These results demonstrate that extracting targeted oxygen from a compressive-strained oxide provides an opportunity for creating unexpected crystal structures and novel functionalities.

Photo-spin-voltaic effect in PtMn/Y3Fe5O12 thin films

The photo-spin-voltaic effect is revealed by the presence of a spin voltage generated by photons when a non-magnetic metal (e.g., Pt) is in close proximity to a ferrimagnetic insulator (e.g., Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ (YIG)). This is attributed to the excited electrons and holes diffusing from the proximized layer near the interface to the metallic surface. By using a dual-ion-beam sputtering deposition technique, a metallic PtMn layer was deposited on YIG /Gd₃Ga₅O₁₂ (GGG) (111) substrates. We report on the photo-induced-spin voltaic effect in a PtMn/YIG/GGG heterostructure. The sign of the photo-generated voltage was found to switch with magnetic field polarity and its intensity to decrease with increasing PtMn thickness. This indicates that spin-polarized electrons are confined near the interface in the metal. Photo-excitation of these carriers, together with spin-orbit coupling with Pt atoms, is at the origin of the measured transverse voltage. The design may find applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

A scalable molecule-based magnetic thin film for spin-thermoelectric energy conversion

Spin thermoelectrics, an emerging thermoelectric technology, offers energy harvesting from waste heat with potential advantages of scalability and energy conversion efficiency, thanks to orthogonal paths for heat and charge flow. However, magnetic insulators previously used for spin thermoelectrics pose challenges for scale-up due to high temperature processing and difficulty in large-area deposition. Here, we introduce a molecule-based magnetic film for spin thermoelectric applications because it entails versatile synthetic routes in addition to weak spin-lattice interaction and low thermal conductivity. Thin films of Cr^II[Cr^III(CN)₆], Prussian blue analogue, electrochemically deposited on Cr electrodes at room temperature show effective spin thermoelectricity. Moreover, the ferromagnetic resonance studies exhibit an extremely low Gilbert damping constant ~(2.4 ± 0.67) × 10^-4, indicating low loss of heat-generated magnons. The demonstrated STE applications of a new class of magnet will pave the way for versatile recycling of ubiquitous waste heat.

Enhanced Spin Seebeck Thermopower in Pt/Holey MoS2/Y3Fe5O12 Hybrid Structure

We first observed the spin-to-charge conversion due to both the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) and inverse spin-Hall effect in a holey multilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) intermediate layer in a Pt/YIG structure via LSSE measurements under nonequilibrium magnetization. We found an enhancement of approximately 238%, 307%, and 290% in the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) voltage, spin-to-charge current, and thermoelectric (TE) power factor, respectively, compared with the monolayer MoS₂ interlayer in a Pt/YIG structure. Such an enhancement in the LSSE performance of Pt/holey MoS₂/YIG can be explained by the improvement of spin accumulation in the Pt layer by induced spin fluctuation as well as increased additional spin-to-charge conversion due to in-plane IREE. Our findings represent a significant achievement in the understanding of spin transport in atomically thin MoS₂ interlayers and pave the way toward large-area TE energy-harvesting devices in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials.

Acoustic spin Hall effect in strong spin-orbit metals

We report on the observation of the acoustic spin Hall effect that facilitates lattice motion-induced spin current via spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Under excitation of surface acoustic wave (SAW), we find that a spin current flows orthogonal to the SAW propagation in nonmagnetic metals (NMs). The acoustic spin Hall effect manifests itself in a field-dependent acoustic voltage in NM/ferromagnetic metal bilayers. The acoustic voltage takes a maximum when the NM layer thickness is close to its spin diffusion length, vanishes for NM layers with weak SOI, and increases linearly with the SAW frequency. To account for these results, we find that the spin current must scale with the SOI and the time derivative of the lattice displacement. These results, which imply the strong coupling of electron spins with rotating lattices via the SOI, show the potential of lattice dynamics to supply spin current in strong spin-orbit metals.

Transport phenomena in spin caloritronics

The interconversion between spin, charge, and heat currents is being actively studied from the viewpoints of both fundamental physics and thermoelectric applications in the field of spin caloritronics. This field is a branch of spintronics, which has developed rapidly since the discovery of the thermo-spin conversion phenomenon called the spin Seebeck effect. In spin caloritronics, various thermo-spin conversion phenomena and principles have subsequently been discovered and magneto-thermoelectric effects, thermoelectric effects unique to magnetic materials, have received renewed attention with the advances in physical understanding and thermal/thermoelectric measurement techniques. However, the existence of various thermo-spin and magneto-thermoelectric conversion phenomena with similar names may confuse non-specialists. Thus, in this Review, the basic behaviors, spin-charge-heat current conversion symmetries, and functionalities of spin-caloritronic phenomena are summarized, which will help new entrants to learn fundamental physics, materials science, and application studies in spin caloritronics.

Magnon-phonon interaction in antiferromagnetic two-dimensional MXenes

Antiferromagnetic material possesses excellent robustness to an external magnetic field perturbation, which makes it promising in application of spintronic devices. The magnon-phonon interaction plays a vital role in spintronic devices. In this work, we performed first-principles calculation to study the effect of magnon-phonon interaction on magnon spectra of the antiferromagnetic MXenes Cr₂TiC₂FCl, and calculated the phonon dominated magnon relaxation time based on the magnon spectra broadening. Due to the large exchange constants across Cr-Cr pairs, high magnon energy is found in Cr₂TiC₂FCl. We find that compared with the acoustic magnons, the optical magnons have stronger interaction with phonon modes. Moreover, relaxation time of optical magnons and acoustic magnons have quite different wavevector dependence. Our results about spin coupling to specific phonon polarizations can shed light on the understanding of magnon damping and energy dissipation in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic materials.

Spin Caloritronics in 3D Interconnected Nanowire Networks

Recently, interconnected nanowire networks have been found suitable as flexible macroscopic spin caloritronic devices. The 3D nanowire networks are fabricated by direct electrodeposition in track-etched polymer templates with crossed nano-channels. This technique allows the fabrication of crossed nanowires consisting of both homogeneous ferromagnetic metals and multilayer stack with successive layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic metals, with controlled morphology and material composition. The networks exhibit extremely high, magnetically modulated thermoelectric power factors. Moreover, large spin-dependent Seebeck coefficients were directly extracted from experimental measurements on multilayer nanowire networks. This work provides a simple and cost-effective way to fabricate large-scale flexible and shapeable thermoelectric devices exploiting the spin degree of freedom.

Orbital Magnetic Moment of Magnons

In experiments and their interpretation usually the spin magnetic moment of magnons is considered. In this Letter, we identify a complementing orbital magnetic moment of magnons brought about by spin-orbit coupling. Our microscopic theory uncovers that spin magnetization M^{S} and orbital magnetization M^{O} are independent quantities; they are not necessarily collinear. Even when the total spin moment is compensated due to antiferromagnetism, M^{O} may be nonzero. This scenario of orbital weak ferromagnetism is realized in paradigmatic kagome antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We demonstrate that magnets exhibiting a magnonic orbital moment are omnipresent and propose transport experiments for probing it.

Majorana-Mediated Spin Transport in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We study the spin transport through the quantum spin liquid (QSL) by investigating the real-time and real-space dynamics of the Kitaev spin system with zigzag edges using the time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. After the magnetic-field pulse is introduced to one of the edges, spin moments are excited in the opposite edge region although spin moments are never induced in the Kitaev QSL region. This unusual spin transport originates from the fact that the S=1/2 spins are fractionalized into the itinerant and localized Majorana fermions in the Kitaev system. Although both Majorana fermions are excited by the magnetic pulse, only the itinerant ones flow through the bulk regime without spin excitations, resulting in the spin transport in the Kitaev system despite the presence of a nonzero spin gap. We also demonstrate that this phenomenon can be observed in the system with small Heisenberg interactions using the exact diagonalization.

Surface Coverage Dependence of Spin-to-Charge Current across Pt/MoS2/Y3Fe5O12 Layers via Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect

The voltage induced by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is affected by several factors, including the spin Hall angle of the normal metal (NM), the quality and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic material (FM), and the interface conditions between the NM and FM bilayers in longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) measurement. Specifically, the interface conditions in NM/FM systems via LSSE devices play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of spin current injection into the NM layer. In this letter, we report a new approach to controlling the efficiency of spin current injection into a Pt layer across a Pt/Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ (YIG) interface by surface coverage of the intermediate layer. A continuous, large-area multilayer molybdenum dichalcogenide (MoS₂) thin film grown by chemical vapor deposition is inserted between the Pt and YIG layers in the LSSE configuration. We found that, when the large-area multilayer MoS₂ film was present, the measured ISHE-induced voltage and theoretically calculated spin current in the Pt/MoS₂/YIG trilayer increased by ∼510% and 470%, respectively, compared to those of a Pt/YIG bilayer. The induced voltage and spin current were very sensitive to the surface conductance, which was affected by the surface coverage of the multilayer MoS₂ films in the LSSE measurement. Furthermore, the theoretically calculated spin current and spin mixing conductance in the trilayer geometry are in qualitatively good agreement with the experimental observations. These measurements enable us to explain the effect of the interface conditions on the spin Seebeck effect in spin transport.

Large Spin-Dependent Thermoelectric Effects in NiFe-based Interconnected Nanowire Networks

NiFe alloy and NiFe/Cu multilayered nanowire (NW) networks were grown using a template-assisted electrochemical synthesis method. The NiFe alloy NW networks exhibit large thermopower, which is largely preserved in the current perpendicular-to-plane geometry of the multilayered NW structure. Giant magneto-thermopower (MTP) effects have been demonstrated in multilayered NiFe/Cu NWs with a value of 25% at 300 K and reaching 60% around 100 K. A large spin-dependent Seebeck coefficient of -12.3 μV/K was obtained at room temperature. The large MTP effects demonstrate a magnetic approach to control thermoelectric properties of flexible devices based on NW networks.

Long-Range Phonon Spin Transport in Ferromagnet-Nonmagnetic Insulator Heterostructures

We investigate phonon spin transport in an insulating ferromagnet-nonmagnet-ferromagnet heterostructure. We show that the magnetoelastic interaction between the spins and the phonons leads to nonlocal spin transfer between the magnets. This transfer is mediated by a local phonon spin current and accompanied by a phonon spin accumulation. The spin conductance depends nontrivially on the system size, and decays over millimeter length scales for realistic material parameters, far exceeding the decay lengths of magnonic spin currents.

Magnetic Nanowires

Magnetic nanowires are attractive materials because of their morphology-dependent remarkable properties suitable for various advanced technologies in sensing, data storage, spintronics, biomedicine and microwave devices, etc. The recent advances in synthetic strategies and approaches for the fabrication of complex structures, such as parallel arrays and 3D networks of one-dimensional nanostructures, including nanowires, nanotubes, and multilayers, are presented. The simple template-assisted electrodeposition method enables the fabrication of different nanowire-based architectures with excellent control over geometrical features, morphology and chemical composition, leading to tunable magnetic, magneto-transport and thermoelectric properties. This review article summarizing the work carried out at UCLouvain focuses on the magnetic and spin-dependent transport properties linked to the material and geometrical characteristics.
